Copied to Clipboard

Sometimes the best way to learn something new — or discover history that’s hidden in plain sight — is to explore on your own.

Take advantage of these self-guided driving and walking tours of Greater Philadelphia that put you in control of when and how you explore top attractions and important historical sites.

Great for solo excursions or small groups, these self-guided explorations (many of which are free!) are an excellent way to uncover interesting facts about Philadelphia — and encounter surprises along the way.

Philly’s self-guided tours also span a wide range of interests. Get an immersive history lesson on the nation’s Founding Fathers; take your time exploring significant stops along the Underground Railroad; learn the story behind the city’s jaw-dropping architecture; or indulge in a curated culinary journey sampling the city’s most quintessential foods.

Want a little more interactivity? Some experiences offer scavenger hunts that let you upload photos of their finds, while others include augmented reality apps that transform the world in front of your eyes.

Check out our guide below for a list of great self-guided walking and driving tours to help you explore Philadelphia and the Countryside on your own.

History: Black History

7th ward legacy reclaimed self-guided tours.

The art and history experience Legacy Reclaimed: A 7th Ward Tribute honors the lives — and lesser-known history — of 19th-century Black residents of Philadelphia’s old 7th Ward. An important part of the Underground Railroad and Great Migration, the 7th Ward was the former home to 15,000 Black residents including Octavius V. Catto and W.EB. Du Bois. Legacy Reclaimed ’s self-guided tour brochure takes you to two dozen historically significant homes, landmarks and institutions throughout what is now known as Society Hill and Washington Square West .

Anti-Slavery Walking Tours from The Philadelphia Inquirer

Exterior of Mother Bethel

Philadelphians were heavily involved in the abolitionist movement, and the Underground Railroad passed through the city, helping enslaved people find freedom here and north into Canada. Two free audio tours from The Philadelphia Inquirer guide people through Old City and Society Hill and around Northwest Philadelphia to visit anti-slavery landmarks like Congo Square (now Washington Square ), a convening space and burial ground for the Black community; and Germantown’s Johnson House Historic Site , which served as an Underground Railroad stop and may have even hosted Harriet Tubman.

Black History Historical Marker Tour from The Philadelphia Inquirer

Exterior of the Paul Robeson House in Philadelphia

Philadelphia’s history is rich with important moments involving the Black community , many of which aren’t tied to a specific attraction. Fortunately, historical markers around the city help preserve these legacies. This map from The Philadelphia Inquirer can help you wind your way through the city and learn more about 19th- and 20th-century painter Henry Ossawa Tanner; the Christian Street YMCA, where a young Wilt Chamberlain got his start; and Laura Wheeler Waring, who painted portraits of W.E.B. DuBois and Marian Anderson.

Where: Various locations including the Paul Robeson House, 4951 Walnut Street

Sweet Chariot: The Long Journey Through Time

The experience begins in Washington Square and ultimately leads to the final resting place of Amelia Brown, who was uncovered in an 18th-century graveyard during a construction project in 2013.

A 5-Mile Walking Tour of Pittsburgh to See 17 Highlights

walking tour

Published by Jeremy . Last Updated on April 19, 2024.

Disclaimer : Our site uses demographic data, email opt-ins, display advertising, and affiliate links. Please check out our Terms and Conditions . Pricing, operating hours, or menus may have changed since our initial visit and may not be reflected in subsequent updates. Please confirm these directly with any business or attraction prior to visiting.

When we visit cities around the world as travelers, one of the first things we do is figure out a grand walking tour in order to get a feel for the city. We generally take anywhere from a half-day or full-day to do these self-guided city tours and really love checking things out on foot.

Until now, we had never put together one of these guides for Pittsburgh as our 90 neighborhoods often make it difficult to get around and see them all. Still, the neighborhoods in and around the central business district in downtown Pittsburgh have quite a lot to see and many of these spots are on the radar of those visiting Pittsburgh for the first time as well as long-time residents.

So in this one, we wanted to share what we consider to be the ultimate walking tour of downtown Pittsburgh! This walking tour covers five miles in the North Side , downtown Pittsburgh, Mount Washington , and Station Square and has 17 unique highlights worth checking out.

So put your walking shoes on and get to exploring this beautiful city!

Upfront Notes About This Pittsburgh Walking Tour

Pittsburgh's Bridges from Mount Washington

We have personally walked this route from start to finish and completed the five-mile walk in about 2.5 hours. We walked at a fairly brisk pace and only stopped for a quick snack (ten minutes). As we recognize that everyone walks at different speeds, and the inclines can often have lines, we think that most people would take a minimum of 3 hours to complete this walk. Use this as your starting point for time estimation.

After each major stop, we'll feature some additional detours for things you can see, places to eat, or stops to grab a drink at nearby. Note that you will have to estimate your own amount of time spent on any detour beyond our main stops, and there are many other interesting things we have not included you might spot along the way as well. You very much could use this guide to make a day out of all of the detour options if you wanted to hit a bunch- our main itinerary is just a starting point! Operating hours may vary.

It is also worth noting that the inclines also charge for each ride and require cash payment with exact change. No ATM is available on-site but the stations have bill changers to break bills which may or may not always be in working order. That being said, we recommend carrying exact change for your party. Current pricing for each incline can be found here and here .

This walk also includes a mix of stairs, bridge crossings, and a few narrow paths. As such, there may be some accessibility issues for non-walkers.

Finally, we've used a mix of photos from our exact walk and photos from previous walks around the city. So if you're curious why the lighting changes drastically, this is why. Sadly, our first walkabout on this itinerary was fairly overcast and we weren't particularly happy with the photos.

A Five-Mile Walking Tour of Pittsburgh Map

The map for our walking tour of Pittsburgh is illustrated above and available to use on Google Maps on your phone by clicking here .

If you need parking within close proximity to this route, Allegheny Commons (metered until 6pm and free on Sundays) and the garage at NOVA Place in the North Side often have spots (non-game days), the PPA operated garages downtown offer flat-rate night and weekend rates, and the parking garage at Station Square often has spots available as well (they charge hourly 24/7 with surge pricing during events). We do not recommend parking on Mount Washington as meters are limited (both in quantity and time-wise) and street parking is permit based.

Mr. Rogers Statue – Tribute to Children

Tribute to Children in the North Shore

Fred Rogers is arguably the most well-known television personality to come out of Pittsburgh and he entertained millions upon millions of children with Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood which aired from 1968 to 2001.

Mr. Rogers was quite the humble guy and his wife was quoted saying that he would never have wanted a memorial to himself. Hence, this statue is entitled  Tribute to Children . The statue of Mr. Rogers was built by artist Robert Berks (whose work we'll see later on in this tour), was commissioned in 2008 for what would've been Mr. Rogers' 80th birthday, and was installed in the former Manchester Bridge Pier.

When visiting this rather large statue, you'll likely hear one of 29 audio segments playing clips from Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. We couldn't think of a better place to start our tour than here.

Crossing the Fort Duquesne Bridge

From there, we're going to walk east along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail (towards the city) and climb up the stairs to the walking path on the Fort Duquesne Bridge (the first bridge you see in front of you). The pathway here will be on your left side as you walk up to the bridge.

The Fountain at Point State Park

Point State Park's Fountain

After crossing the bridge, you'll find yourself in a tranquil garden within Point State Park. After entering the park turn immediately to your right and you'll find a set of steps that will take you down to the river trail that you likely saw when on the opposite side of the bridge.

Turn left when on the trail and walk a few minutes where you'll arrive at the fountain at Point State Park (seasonal operation). This point marks the confluence of our three rivers- the Allegheny (north), Monongahela (south), and Ohio (west). This piece of land was home to former military outposts by the British and French due to its strategic location on the river.

If you head towards the city along the grassy path directly behind the fountain, you'll find outlines of the former Fort Duquesne as well as the Fort Pitt Blockhouse (but more on that one below). If it has rained recently, this grass may be quite muddy and otherwise you may want to just continue walking around the river trail until you reach the Fort Pitt Bridge (the bridge directly in front of you over the Monongahela River).

Here, walk up the path right below it (on your left) and head towards the Fort Pitt Blockhouse in front of you.

The Fort Pitt Blockhouse

The Fort Pitt Blockhouse - The Oldest Building in Pittsburgh

The Fort Pitt Blockhouse was built in 1764 and is considered to be the oldest building in Pittsburgh (and any building west of the Allegheny Mountains). This structure was first used as a defensive outpost for the fort and then later as a trading post.

The blockhouse is free to enter when open and days of operation vary by season . After checking out the blockhouse, turn around and get on the walkway behind the Fort Pitt Museum just a few steps away (see photo below). This will take you across a narrow walking path on the Fort Pitt Bridge which will veer off onto West Carson Street and directly into the lower station of the Duquesne Incline- our next stop!

The walkway from Point State Park to the Incline

Optional Detour : The Fort Pitt Museum is a modest museum dedicated to the early history of Pittsburgh and gives more history of the fortifications, the battles over control of the confluence, and more. This detour will likely add on at least 30 minutes. If you do visit the Fort Pitt Museum, you can take your ticket to the Heinz History Center later in the day (or next day) to have that ticket fee applied to your cost of visiting that museum- a great perk! (This should be reconfirmed on the History Center's website prior to visiting.)

Duquesne Incline

The lower station of the Duquesne Incline

Prior to the invention of cars, many workers would ride funiculars up and down the hills around Pittsburgh. Over the years, many of these were removed, and today two remain.

The Duquesne Incline (built in 1877) is often considered to be the most popular tourist attraction in Pittsburgh, and with good reason- it offers stellar views of the Pittsburgh skyline from the ride up and at the upper station's platform (down the hallway to your right as you exit)!

Pittsburgh from the Duquesne Incline Overlook

When here, be sure to stick around and check out all of the historic photos on the wall before exiting out to Grandview Avenue, turning right on the sidewalk, and walking about five minutes up the relatively small hill to our next stop.

Point of View Statue

Point of View Statue

After a very quick walk up the hill you'll find yourself at the Point of View Statue across the street from Monterey Bay Fish Grotto . This bronze statue was constructed in 2006 by James A. West and depicts George Washington meeting with Seneca leader Guyasuta which was said to have taken place somewhere in the region (not specifically at this spot).

George Washington actually triggered a fair number of key events in western Pennsylvania, and some could say these events helped lead up to the Revolutionary War and our inevitable break from Britain.

Still, we think this statue is a beauty and the view of the city from it is one of our favorites. Something about looking out over the hill without any railings like you have at the incline is simply wonderful!

From there, turn back the way you came. We're now on a one-mile walk down Grandview Avenue to the upper station of the Monongahela Incline. You won't get lost because this one is on Grandview as well, so keep going straight.

Grandview Avenue

Pittsburgh from the Grandview Overlooks

After about a half of a mile walking down Grandview Avenue, you'll cross an intersection with PJ McArdle Roadway. After passing this road, more stellar views of the city open up at a different angle than at the Duquesne Incline.

While walking down Grandview Avenue, you'll have the option to walk out onto some lookout platforms for even better views, and after taking in the skyline for your liking it is time to continue walking to near the end of Grandview Avenue to ride the Monongahela Incline down the mountain.

Monongahela Incline

Looking Down the Monongahela Incline

When you're ready, board the Monongahela Incline to take a ride down to Station Square. This incline was built in 1870 and is considered to be the oldest operating funicular in the United States. Today it is often used by those who live in Mount Washington and commute to downtown and has a fair bit less tourist traffic than the Duquesne Incline down the road.

This incline is also part of the Pittsburgh Regional Transit system (formerly Port Authority), so if you are taking public transit at all you may want to pay with a ConnectCard to get a transfer within 3-hours of riding the incline for a nominal extra fee (about $1). Transfers  do not apply on the Duquesne Incline which requires its own payment.

When exiting the lower station of the Monongahela Incline, turn right on West Carson Street. The intersection immediately in front of you will be Smithfield Street. Cross the street (heading north) and walk down Smithfield Street towards the Smithfield Street Bridge.

Smithfield Street Bridge

The Smithfield Street Bridge from South Side

This bridge is one of our favorites in the city (which is saying a lot since we have 446- more than Venice, Italy!) and was first built between 1881 and 1883. The original wooden bridge was replaced with the wire bridge which was created by John A Roebling- a German immigrant who lived in Saxonburg just about an hour outside of the city.

Roebling used his wiring rope in many large bridges around the country including the John A Roebling Suspension Bridge in Cincinnati and the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. Today the Smithfield Street Bridge stands out amongst Pittsburgh's primarily yellow-painted bridges and is a favorite of many.

A Bessemer Furnace in Station Square

The City-County Building

City-County Building in Pittsburgh

After crossing the Smithfield Street Bridge, you will be back in downtown proper. At the end of the bridge, you should make sure you are on the eastern side (right-hand side as you cross). At the intersection of Fort Pitt Blvd there will be two pedestrian pathways. One is a ramp down that will go to the river trail at the Monongahela Wharf, and the second follows a curved path along Fort Pitt Blvd. You should follow this second path.

As the path curves around, you'll cross an intersection and then be facing north on Grant Street. Continue walking down Grant a few blocks, cross Boulevard of the Allies, and two blocks later you'll reach the City-County Building.

This building is home to Pittsburgh's city and county governments and is a gorgeous piece of architecture with a large, domed entryway. Outside the entryway is a second statue by Robert Berks (who did the Mr. Rogers Statue at our first stop) of Richard S. Caliguiri- mayor of Pittsburgh from 1977 until 1988. Mayor Caliguiri helped launch Pittsburgh's “Renaissance II” plan which focused on many of the urban renewal efforts we enjoy today.

Tours of the City-County Building are appointment based, but we always recommend checking out Doors Open Pittsburgh as they periodically offer tours that go inside here!

When you're done here, turn back around the way you came and head to Fourth Avenue (at the corner). Turn right and head west on Fourth Avenue.

Fourth Avenue's Historic Architecture

Looking Up in Fourth Avenue, Pittsburgh

Fourth Avenue is our favorite cross street to walk on in downtown Pittsburgh as it has a large concentration of amazing architecture to check out- specifically around historic bank buildings as this street was Pittsburgh's banking district.

Brownstone Lions at Dollar Bank Pittsburgh

We'll let you be the judge on what building is your favorite, but ours is most certainly the historic Dollar Bank building which was built in 1870 with two massive Portland brownstone lions out front. In 2012 the original lions were moved inside (where you may be able see if the bank is open or during Doors Open as mentioned above) and hand-carved replicas were installed in 2013.

When walking down Fourth Avenue, be sure to look up, down, and even behind you as the architecture here is simply awe-inspiring. Keep walking down this street for a few blocks and you'll find yourself in PPG Place's central courtyard.

PPG Place in Downtown Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh may be known as the Steel City, but for a while, we were a glass production hub as well. One company to come out of this industry was PPG, formerly Pittsburgh Plate Glass, which was founded in 1883 and grew to have over 100 manufacturing locations all over the world. (Since then PPG has divested their glass business and focuses more on paints and coatings.)

Their headquarters, constructed between 1981 and 1984, showcases glass in the best way possible as it covers almost every single square foot of the building. Couple in the fact that the property spans several blocks and has a unique design with spires (over 200 in total), a courtyard, and more, and you may not be surprised to hear that in total the complex has over one million square feet of glass!

In the summer months, the central courtyard often has a fountain and stone obelisk and in the winter PPG Place comes to life with an ice skating rink and massive Christmas tree.

After taking in PPG Place, you'll exit the plaza by crossing Fourth Avenue north and passing through the pedestrian walkway directly into Market Square. (As you were walking down Fourth Avenue coming into PPG Place, this would be on your right coming off the center of the plaza).

Market Square

Music in Market Square

Market Square is one of the historical centers of downtown Pittsburgh. This square was originally named Diamond Way and was the hub for the city's first courthouse, jail, newspaper, and more. Now Market Square is a fairly popular dining and entertainment hub with many restaurants being found here (a mix of local spots and chains). While walking through the square, you also get some great views of PPG Place, Fifth Avenue Place (with the Highmark logo), and The Tower at PNC Plaza- one of the most energy-efficient skyscrapers in the world.

Beyond dining and the views, you never know what art piece or musician you may find in Market Square. Beyond this, the square has frequent market pop-ups and in December this plaza comes to life with a Christmas market containing several dozen vendors (our favorite time of the year here).

After you're done checking out Market Square, keep walking north on a straight line through the same path you entered. This will take you through Market Street. Take this road two blocks and you'll find yourself at the intersection with Liberty Avenue. Turn right here and walk down 1 1/2 blocks. We're going to cross the street to the other side of Liberty Avenue and head down the alley just past 7th and behind the Benedum Center- Tito Way.

Optional Detours : Within Market Square there are a number of restaurants including Primanti Brothers , The Original Oyster House (the oldest restaurant in Pittsburgh), the Mexican restaurant Las Velas , Pizzaiolo Primo , City Works gastropub, and many, many more. If you like wine, a visit to Market Street Grocery's Wine Bar is a must for their curated selection (especially if you're there for happy hour). If a cocktail is more your speed, The Warren on 7th and Liberty Avenue offers stellar cocktails at very attractive prices. If you are in the mood for a sweet treat- local ice cream shop, Millie's , can be found a half-block east of the square on Forbes Avenue.

Or, if you'd rather check out an art gallery, SPACE and Wood Street Gallery can both be found on Liberty Avenue and have rotating exhibits if you can catch them when they're open (and are free!). Detours here can last as little as a few minutes to up to an hour or more.

Tito Way and Cell Phone Disco

Cell Phone Disco

The slight detour to Tito Way is worth it to see two great art installations in the alley behind the Benedum Center.

The first is a selection of art exhibits hung throughout the alleyway that often contains deep and thought-provoking imagery (we've seen these rotate over time, so we're going to be general here in case the art changes). The second is the permanently installed Cell Phone Disco. This installation features a 16×16′ glass panel with over 2,000 LED lights. Antennas on-site pick up the electromagnetic field around an active mobile phone and cause the LED lights to dance around the screen.

We'll be the first to note that this exhibit is somewhat prone to issues. We've walked through the alley sometimes when it is not on or misfiring, but sometimes you may get lucky and it works and presents a cool scene all the same. Despite the variable odds if this exhibit is fully functional, the other artwork found in this alley makes it a worthy detour all the same.

After you pass through the alley, you'll find yourself on Penn Avenue. Turn left and walk for a few more blocks to stroll through the Cultural District.

Theaters in the Cultural District

Byham Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh

While our walk through the Cultural District may be brief, by strolling down Penn Avenue from Tito Way to 6th Avenue you'll pass Agnes Agnes R. Katz Plaza, the 7th and Penn Parklet (with a gorgeous piece of art), the Benedum Center, Agnes Katz Plaza, the O'Reilly Theater, and Heinz Hall to name a few (with the two big theaters being on the cross streets of 7th and 6th respectively on your left-hand side).

In most circumstances, there is likely a show going on at one of the theaters nearly every day of the year, and this stretch of the district is always bustling with activity. When you reach 6th Avenue (after taking a look at the architecture of Heinz Hall), turn to your right and walk down 6th to the Clemente Bridge. On your way you'll pass the Byham Theater and will round out your quick walk through the Cultural District.

The Three Sisters Bridges

Sister Bridges

As you exit the Cultural District on 6th Avenue, you'll cross the road and see the first of the Three Sisters Bridges in front of you. These three bridges are said to be the only identical triplet pair of bridges in the country and are an icon of Pittsburgh's downtown.

The bridge directly in front of you is the Roberto Clemente Bridge, named for the famous Pittsburgh Pirates player from the mid-50s to the early 70s. Crossing this one will take you directly to PNC Park . The second bridge is the Andy Warhol Bridge, named for Pittsburgh's most famous artist. Crossing this one will take you directly to the Andy Warhol Museum (the largest museum in North America dedicated to a single artist). The final bridge is the Rachel Carson Bridge, named for the activist Rachel Carson who wrote Silent Spring- a blockbuster book about the harmful effects of the use of pesticides (this book was one of the big drivers for the founding of the EPA).

Pick a bridge to cross (we like the Clemente near PNC Park) and continue on.

Looking Down the Clemente Bridge

As soon as you cross the bridge, on the right hand side of the street there will be a path that will take you back down to the Three Rivers Heritage Trail . Once you reach the river trail, turn right, and make your way towards the Fort Duquesne Bridge that you crossed at the start of this walking tour.

Acrisure Stadium (Formerly Heinz Field)

Heinz Field and Pittsburgh from the Air

To end this walking tour of Pittsburgh, we continue back to where we started- the Mr. Rogers Statue on the North Shore River Trail (about a ten-minute walk from PNC Park). While on the trail you'll get stellar views of the city, the ability to spot a few war memorials, the water steps, and get a great view of Acrisure Stadium as you approach the Mr. Rogers Statue to end your walk!

Optional Detours : When you walk down the steps from PNC Park to the North Shore River Trail, if you want to take a short walk on the path to the left you'll pass underneath the Sister Bridges. We love this view and think its perhaps the best view from the city on all of the river trail. This detour could add on five to ten minutes. Likewise, when your tour is over you can also explore more restaurants on the North Shore and continue on with your day!

Pittsburgh from the Mr. Rogers Memorial

Overall, this walking tour hits some of our favorite sights in Pittsburgh all within an easily accessible five-mile loop. As mentioned at the start of this article, even the fastest of walkers may take 2.5 to 3 hours to complete this route, but you should plan on extra time for any and all detours as mentioned in their respective sections. You really could make a day out of this one!

Is there any printable versions of the map with step by step instructions?

Unfortunately we do not have any printable editions at this time, but we will put this on our to-do list for our next update.

Walked this tour on a recent stop In Pittsburgh. We loved it! Bypassed the inclines (did that last time we were here), but enjoyed the walk along the river to the Smithfield Street Bridge. Loved getting a taste of all the different areas. And LOVED Fourth Ave and the bank buildings. Thank you for a great tour!

So glad you liked it! We are also pretty excited how its easy to skip the Inclines if you want to do those separately. A great alternative option!

Can’t wait to do this when I visit Pittsburgh. Thanks for putting it together.

Really enjoyed this walking tour but we ended up with 6 miles. FYI 6th street bridge (three sisters?) was closed so crossed on 7th street bridge (Andy Warhol). Also, beginning Aug 1st the Monongahela Incline will be closed for 4 months.

Thanks for the update. We didn’t see that news about the Incline until you commented. Going to update now!

Had a great time with some visiting out-of-town friends following your downtown tour this past weekend, including the optional detours. Recommend adding Mellon Square and the Union Trust Building – both recently restored.

Came to Pittsburgh for the first time to attend a wedding and had several hours between hotel checkout and the flight home. Accidentally stumbled across this website and this walking tour which starts right near the hotel. We only did it as far as the Duquesne Incline (round trip) then back again but it was so much more than we would’ve done on our own. We thank you very much for putting this together and sharing it with us. It was wonderful and if we ever come back to Pittsburgh we will complete the tour! Much appreciated!

We are so glad you got to check out a bit of the city when coming in for a wedding. Thanks so much for the kind words!

I am planning a trip to Pittsburgh (my first time!) in October and this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Begins and ends near my hotel, includes all the things I wanted to see most, some of the restaurants I was looking at are listed… plus lots of suggestions I didn’t even think of/know about. Thank you so much. This is awesome and I plan on making this my day 1 priority!

Thanks for some great suggestions. It was just what we were looking for, with the right mix of river and city. The only hiccup was the path along the Monongahela being under construction, but we took the path past Highmark Stadium as an alternate to that alternate.

We loved the tour! The route was great and the views magnificent. Only problem was getting on the Fort Pitt Bridge from Point Park as one of the sidewalks was closed but we got some help from a friendly city employee who pointed us in the right direction. Thanks so much for a great walk!

I had a 4 hour work meeting to listen to sooooooo….. I walked your whole tour as I listened. You have this Coloradan anxious to come back for another visit and see more

That is a great way to enjoy a meeting. Hope you make it back soon!

Historic Downtown Denver Walking Tour

This walking tour will take you to some of the best spots in Downtown Denver, where the city’s past and present come together in utterly unique ways. Many of the sites and buildings are listed as official Denver landmarks or included in the National Register of Historic Places. Many also have markers and plaques noting their original intended purpose and construction dates.

Use the  16th Street Mall  as your home base. Designed in 1982 by I.M. Pei, the 16th Street Mall is a mile-long pedestrian promenade lined with outdoor cafés, flower baskets and retail shops, making it the perfect starting point for an adventure-filled day.

Free shuttles travel both directions the entire length of the mall from early morning to late at night. They stop at every intersection, making it easy to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. So, grab a cup of coffee and let the day begin!

LoDo (Lower Downtown)

This area comprises a 25-block area that just a decade ago wasn’t much more than abandoned warehouses and rail yards. Today, it has been restored and renovated to create  LoDo  (Lower Downtown), one of the liveliest areas in the city — not to mention one of the most historic.

Denver Union Station

Start your tour of the area at the newly renovated  Denver Union Station . At its height, 70 trains a day passed through Denver. Not quite as many trains pass through Union Station these days, but the beautiful building (originally constructed in 1881) still attracts visitors with its Beaux-Arts-style design, expansive interior, stone clock tower and uber-popular shops, restaurants, bars and cocktail lounges.

Cross Wynkoop Street and learn about the early history of the area from historic markers that can be found on buildings at 1801 Wynkoop St. (Littleton Creamery / Beatrice Foods Cold Storage Warehouse) and 1635 17th St. (Denver City Cable Railway Building).

Coors Field

Keep walking down Wynkoop towards  Coors Field , the home of the  Colorado Rockies , Denver's hometown Major League Baseball team, established in 1993. Constructed in the mid-90s, the ballpark has earned a reputation as one of the best in the country, combining state-of-the-art technology with a nostalgic ambiance. It was modeled after the Camden Yards Ballpark in Baltimore, and its red-brick construction matches the red-brick architecture of much of LoDo. Don’t miss the baseball art displays as you enter from Wynkoop.

Oxford Hotel

Your next LoDo stop is the classic  Oxford Hotel , the oldest still-standing hotel in Denver, constructed in 1891. You’ll find a historical marker on the outside that will give you the lowdown on this LoDo gem. Inside, take a look (and grab a cocktail) at the  Cruise Room , an Art-Deco bar designed after a lounge on the Queen Mary cruise ship.

Rockmount Ranch Wear

Just across the street from the Oxford on Wazee is the famed  Rockmount Ranch Wear . A Denver original, fashion pioneer Papa Jack Weil invented the Western snap-button shirt and opened shop back in 1946. Jack passed away at the grand old age of 107 in 2008, but not before he sold his shirts to presidents and rock stars like Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen. Stop by the flagship store, now run by Papa Jack's grandson, to browse the incredible selection of Western-style shirts, hats and accessories.

Denver Local Tours

Whiskey and History Tour   On this three-hour tour, you'll start at Denver's oldest Irish pub and sample whiskey. The tour ends at a local distillery. Along the way, you'll learn about the city's founding. It's more of a history tour with drinking rather than a pub crawl. (You must be at least 21.)

LoDo Walking Tour On this two-hour tour, your savvy local guide will share Lower Downtown's fascinating history and point out local hotspots.

Coors Field

Larimer Square

More Denver history can be found in  Larimer Square . It was here that the city got its name, when, in the 1850s, representatives from various settlements in the area got together over a barrel of whiskey and decided to consolidate their resources under one name. Denver was originally named after James Denver, the Kansas territorial governor at the time, following the merging of the settlements of Denver City and Auraria. Today, Larimer Square is one of the most stylish spots in the city, with high-end fashion boutiques, chef-owned restaurants and cafés and much more. Note: If you continue walking north on 15th Street, you can get to such popular attractions as the  Downtown Aquarium  and the  Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus  and hot neighborhoods like  Highland .

Tattered Cover Book Store

Located at McGregor Square , you’ll encounter one of Denver’s most treasured attractions — the independently owned and operated  Tattered Cover Book Store . Of course, calling Tattered Cover merely a “bookstore” is doing it some injustice. Its multileveled location is filled wall to wall with books, magazines, greeting cards, gifts and souvenirs. There’s also a bar. This is an ideal spot to take a break and settle in with a good book — browsing is strongly encouraged! Tattered Cover also has several other locations.

MCA Denver – Museum of Contemporary Art Denver

Much of what you’ll find in LoDo still retains its historic feel, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for modern architectural wonders, too. Case in point:  Museum of Contemporary Art Denver , at 15th and Delgany, designed by cutting-edge London architect David Adjaye. Its sleek interior houses works by some of today’s most innovative artists, and the rooftop café offers a stunning view of downtown.

Millennium Bridge

Connecting  Riverfront Park  and the  16th Street Mall  is the  Millennium Bridge,  constructed in 2002. This unique tubular steel footbridge was designed to resemble the mast of a great ship, stretching an impressive 200 feet into the sky. Either climb the stairs or take the glass elevator to the top. From there, you’ll be treated to a great view of downtown, as well as the Platte River. On the other side of the bridge, Riverfront Park is a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy the gently rolling Platte River.

D&F Tower and Tabor Center in Denver, Colorado

Theatre District/Center of Downtown

Okay, you’ve explored LoDo — time to head to the center of downtown. Either walk up 16th Street or hop on the free 16th Street Mall Shuttle. The Theatre District is a few blocks west on 14th Street, highlighted by the incredible  Denver Performing Arts Complex .

Daniels & Fisher Tower

Hear those bells tolling? That’s the  D&F Tower (Daniels & Fisher) , one of 16th Street’s most distinctive buildings. When it was completed in 1910, this was the highest building west of the Mississippi River. It is modeled after The Campanile (St. Mark’s Bell Tower) in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, and its four clocks (one for each side) are a whopping 16 feet high. So, if you’re caught without a watch, just look up. The tower was built to house one of Denver's largest early 19th-century department stores. Today, the basement of the D&F Tower has been renovated into  The Clocktower Cabaret , an entertainment venue.

Denver Performing Arts Complex/Colorado Convention Center

Ground zero for the Denver performing arts world is, naturally, the  Denver Performing Arts Complex (DPAC) . Located in the heart of downtown at 14th and Curtis Streets, the DPAC houses the 2,700-seat Boettcher Concert Hall (the nation’s first in-the-round concert hall), the Helen Bonfils Theatre Complex (with four separate stages), the 2,830-seat Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre, the Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom and the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The  Denver Center Theatre Company  makes its home here and since 1979 has created an impressive body of classic and contemporary drama and world premieres.

In addition to the excellent performances happening indoors, downtown Denver is also filled with fun public art — pretty much everywhere you look you’ll see something. Over at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, get an eyeful of the fifty-foot-tall “Dancers.” Around the corner at the  Colorado Convention Center  is “I See What You Mean,” a.k.a. the  Blue Bear . Designed by Denver-based artist Lawrence Argent, this curious, 40-foot-tall bear has rapidly become a Denver icon and is a great spot for a family photo. The public art in Denver isn’t all visual either. Stroll down the 1500 block of Curtis Street and you’ll hear Jim Green’s “Soundwalk” — there are speakers under six ordinary-looking grates connected to a tape recorder in a nearby building, playing 40 to 100 selections per hour, including rumbling, gurgling water and other whimsical sounds.

Equitable Building

The  Equitable Building , built in 1892 at the corner of 17th and Stout streets, was designed in the lavish Italian Renaissance Revival style and features some stunning stained-glass windows inside. Look for the historic marker on the exterior to learn more about this downtown landmark, once the tallest building in the city before it was surpassed by the  D&F Tower .

Paramount Theatre

The   Paramount Theatre  is one of many historic theaters in Denver. Built in 1930, the Paramount was originally a classic Art Deco movie house; today, it hosts an amazing array of live music and performing arts. Look for the historic marker on the exterior to learn more.

Trinity United Methodist Church

Designed in 1887 by Robert Roeschlaub, Colorado’s first licensed architect, the  Trinity United Methodist Church  is a splendid example of the Gothic Revival style. The church was constructed entirely out of rhyolite from Castle Rock, Colorado, and it features a stained-glass window by the Tiffany & Co. Head inside to gawk at the gargantuan Roosevelt Pipe Organ — with its network of thousands upon thousands of pipes, it can make quite a sound.

Colorado State Capitol

Golden triangle.

At the end of the  16th Street Mall , you’ll come upon the  Golden Triangle , one of Denver’s cultural hubs, with museums (naturally), restaurants and shopping options galore. The neighborhood is also home to several wonderful art galleries, all worth a visit.

Civic Center Park

The splendid  Civic Center Park   resulted from the inspiration fostered by the "City Beautiful Movement" following the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Elements of well-designed and beautiful parkways, fountains and tree landscaping were merged together in this space and in many other U.S. city park beautification programs. The  City and County Building , completed in 1932, anchors the west end of this park. During the summer months, Civic Center Park hosts multiple fun festivals. From Civic Center Park you can look over many of downtown’s architectural gems, including the  Denver Public Library ,   designed by Michael Graves, and the original 28-sided  Denver Art Museum , designed by Gio Ponti. Nearby, you’ll find the  Center for Colorado Women’s History at Byers-Evans House Museum , which was built in 1883 and is now a museum, and the  U.S. Mint , modeled after the Plazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence, which was built in 1904. Civic Center Park is also full of public art, from Old West-inspired pieces to modern wonders.

Modeled after the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., the 272-foot-high dome of  Colorado’s State Capitol  is covered with 200 ounces of 24KT gold leaf. However, the truly priceless material is inside, where the entire world’s supply of Colorado Rose Onyx was used as wainscoting. No more of the ultra-rare, rose-colored stone has been found since. Construction on the building began in 1886 and was finally completed in 1908. Free tours of the Capitol offer this and other tidbits of information, as well as visits to the Senate and House of Representatives chambers.

Denver Art Museum

One of the city’s architectural jewels, the  Denver Art Museum's  striking Frederic C. Hamilton Building opened to rave reviews in October 2006. Its bold, jagged look was inspired by the Rocky Mountains and by the geometric rock crystals found in the foothills near Denver. The museum recently celebrated the reopening of the Martin Building (formerly known as the North Building). First opened in 1971, the building was designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates. The building has been fully renovated with expanded gallery space, plus stunning views of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains. The building showcases Asian art, Indigenous arts of North America, Northwest Coast and Alaska Native, European and American art before 1900, Latin American and art of the ancient Americas, photography, textile art and fashion, and Western American art collections.

Frequently asked questions.

GuruWalk is an international community for pay-what-you-please walking tours that connects tourists with tour guides all around the world. Our mission is for you to be able to enjoy this type of tour in any place you can imagine.

The GuruWalk community is formed by "gurus" (local guides) who are open, attentive, fun people with great knowledge of the city and who will be your friends wherever you travel.

The other part of the community are the "walkers," or tourist who opt for this type of tour over the more traditional tours, who enjoy unforgettable experiences and most importantly, love to travel around the world doing guruwalks.

A "free walking tour" is a guided tour at a travel destination, where a local guide explains history, culture, and lifestyle. Currently, it is the first option that tourists choose when they visit a new city.

The concept can be a little confusing since "free" in English is a word that immediately makes you think free of cost. While becoming a part of the community, making a booking, or setting up a tour on the platform is 100% free, the traveler has to pay the guide at the end of the tour based on his experience. This concept is commonly referred to as a pay-what-you-please walking tour, because it empowers the client to pay based on their satisfaction with the tour and encourages the guide to always do their best.

At GuruWalk, we call them "guruwalks" so our walkers don’t get confused with the concept. Our intention is for them to understand the concept better and then give a fair remuneration to their Guru, so that we can all keep enjoying this type of tour all across the world.

Look for the city that you want to visit and then choose from all the guruwalks that are available, the different themed experiences, the different neighborhood and the various types of activities to find the best option for you. Book the tour for free through the online platform, receive the email confirmation with all the info and you’re ready to go!

All that’s left to do is show up to the guruwalk to enjoy and learn about other cultures in a fun and entertaining way. Don’t forget to tip your guru’s good work and have a great time.

The star question that the walkers always ask! You choose how much to give, you can take into consideration how satisfied you were with the tour and how much you can afford.

Our gurus are the best tour guides who are at it day after day, who are creating fun and entertaining tours so you can get to know the most important aspects of a city, they know a lot about the city you’re visiting and they’ll help you to have the trip of a lifetime.

This is why most walkers on GuruWalk generally give between 10 o 20€ per person, but as we said, you can choose to give more or less depending on your experience.

If you’d like to join our community of international gurus, all you have to do is click the link here. We’re waiting to get to know you!

Travellers and a leader walking in the Italian Dolomites

Walking & Trekking Tours

  • Ways to travel
  • Walking & trekking

Each journey may begin with a single step, but some require a few more steps than others.

Here’s the idea: we provide you with expert trail guides, accommodation, and porters (where necessary); you bring your legs and a sense of adventure. From the frosted peak of Kilimanjaro and Patagonia’s windswept trails to a more sedate stroll through the rice fields of Vietnam  or the rugged red hills on the Larapinta Trail , there’s a calf-stretching trip to suit every level of fitness and expertise. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other.

Walking vs hiking vs trekking.

Outline of a running shoe with a red strip on the side

Our walking trips will take you on defined tracks and over smooth surfaces – think the grasslands of northern Thailand, rice paddies in Mai Chau, and New Zealand's idyllic Queen Charlotte Track. There’s no need for fitness preparation or specialized equipment; just you, your comfortable walking shoes, and a healthy sense of adventure. And we promise there’s not a base camp in sight.

Outline of a hiking shoe with red patch at the top

Make your way up magnificent mountains, through concentrated bushland, and across rugged, countryside trails on our range of leader-led hiking trips. Harder and longer than a walk but less physically demanding than a trek, hikes are the perfect in-between for those who still want to thoroughly explore the great outdoors without all the fuss of proper equipment.

An outline of a person carrying a backpack

Treks are often in remote destinations where the trails are barely visible, and the terrain makes it harder to traverse without specialized equipment. These treks range from tackling Kilimanjaro to testing your limits at Everest Base Camp and generally feature high altitudes and overnight stops with basic accommodation. Yep, say goodbye to showers and hello to unforgettable memories.

A group of hikers ready to start the trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal

Make the heroic climb to Nepal’s Everest Base Camp

Some destinations are simply more life-changing than others and Everest Base Camp might just be the most profound of them all. Boasting the world’s highest peak and the number one spot on every bucket list, this larger-than-life mountain range will have you challenging yourself in every way. But for the unbelievable views you’ll come across and the Himalayan culture you’ll be treated to, the trek to its base is worth it every time.

Take in the epic vistas along the Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago isn’t just an ancient pilgrimage route - it’s the spiritual journey of a lifetime. Whether you want to do a bit of soul searching, soak up centuries of history, swap stories with people from all over the world, or stare in awe at the picturesque panoramas along the way, this enriching trek will change you in the best way possible. And absolutely nothing beats the feeling of reaching Santiago de Compostela.

What is the range of walking & trekking holidays available?

Our walking & trekking tours span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day challenges in high mountains. We offer a range of tours in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and the Americas, as well as plenty of classic hikes in Europe, the UK, and Australia.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays:

Centre-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the centre of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighbourhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation, or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

How safe are walking & trekking holidays?

The safety of our clients (you), staff (us), and all the people around us (our local friends and other trekkers) is our highest priority. This means we don't cut corners. Ever. All our leaders are adequately qualified, experienced, and insured so you don't need to worry about a thing. We only hike on well-settled trails and we follow local rules. Always. If the local authorities tell us it’s not advisable to walk certain trails then we won’t. If the weather is not looking good, we'll change our plans. If the trail is too busy, we'll turn around and hike elsewhere. It's as simple as that. We're all about staying safe, enjoying the best trails possible, and being flexible to achieve the best hiking experience for you.

What is included in walking & trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

What level of comfort can I expect on a walking & trekking holiday?

Most of our walking & trekking holidays are in the Intrepid Original standard, staying in small, authentic, and atmospheric 2–3-star hotels, using public transport where possible, and including all breakfasts, as well as some dinners and lunches depending on the travel destination. However, some of the trips are in the Intrepid Basix style – in most cases, these are trips featuring more remote itineraries such as in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, or Morocco. We then stay in either local guesthouses (or so-called teahouses in the Himalayas), or we camp. We often use private transfers on these trips too, as public transport options may not be available. Camping can be quite comfortable with spacious tents, clean water available, and where possible, a toilet tent set up. But we also want to make the experience as authentic as possible so you can always opt to camp under the stars.

How sustainable are walking & hiking trips?

Sustainability is at the centre of everything we do, and walking & trekking holidays are no different. In fact, spending most of the time on your feet, scaling local trailheads is probably as sustainable as it gets. We also try to use public transport as much as possible and contract only small, family-run hotels and guesthouses. We also align our itineraries with local standards and follow all rules set up by local authorities. The hikes we choose are mostly a combination of the iconic trails (aka ones you don't want to miss) and the lesser-known ones, ensuring there's a little bit of everything.

What to pack for walking & hiking trip?

All itineraries feature a packing list on the 'Essential Trip Information' document. Please read it carefully as it may contain trip-specific items you must bring. On a higher level, you always need to pack a backpack/day bag to accompany you on your daily walks, comfortable walking shoes or boots (depending on the trip), good trekking clothing (combination of lightweight and quick drying shorts, pants, short and long sleeve shirts), extra warm layers (sometimes even a down jacket) and waterproof gear. We also highly recommend bringing walking poles as these are very useful on steep ascents and long descents.

Read more about what to pack your walking & trekking trip

Will I be required to carry my own luggage?

The short answer is no. Your main luggage is transported for you on point-to-point itineraries (often by porters, therefore it should be packed in a soft/duffle bag) and your luggage stays in your accommodation for all centre-based itineraries. However, you'll need to bring a small bag/backpack (around 25-30 litre capacity) to carry around all of your essentials (water, snacks, extra layer, waterproofs) when you're on the move.

Do I need any special insurance?

You will need to have insurance that will cover hiking and trekking in certain destinations up to a certain elevation (in the Himalayas, Peru, and a few other destinations that feature altitude hikes). But you won't need any special insurance to cover technical activities. However, to be 100% certain your cover is adequate for the trip you're doing, we suggest you talk to an insurer and present the planned itinerary of your chosen trip.

How big are the group sizes?

The maximum group size is 12 people on the majority of walking & trekking trips, however, some itineraries may go up to 16 people. But, on average, there are 7-10 people on each departure.

Are walking & hiking holidays suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely! In fact, most of our customers are travelling solo, and there is no extra fee for doing so. One thing to note is that if are travelling solo, you'll be room-sharing with another solo traveller of the same sex. If you would prefer to have your own room, please speak to your booking agent as we're often able to accommodate this at an extra fee.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

The minimum age on our walking & trekking holidays is predominantly 15 (on some itineraries we can accept a lower age – sometimes even 12, so please enquire at the time of booking). But there is no maximum age limit. We’ll accept everyone who’s keen and physically ready for the challenge (no screening form needed – we trust your own judgement), regardless of age. After all, age is really only a state of mind, right?

Will I get altitude sickness?

On some of our hikes you will encounter high altitudes. When climbing above 2,800 metres (9,200 feet), it is common for travellers to experience some adverse health effects due to the altitude, regardless of your age, gender and fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary!

There’s no real way to tell how your body will react to the rigours of altitude trekking, so it is important that you monitor your condition and discuss any prevailing symptoms with your guide. If you have any pre-existing conditions that could be exacerbated by high altitudes, be sure to get them checked out by a doctor before you leave.

But above all, try not to worry, most of our travellers shake off the effects of altitude pretty quickly and enjoy a safe and rewarding trek.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking & trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike. Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions: Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches. Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina. Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

“Great historical easy walk for all. The directions and app were easy to use. I love the ability to take your time to stop and shop/eat and pick back up easily since it not a group with a guide.”

“The tour of New Haven was amazing! Enough detail to keep us interested but not too much to be boring. Plus the app functionality and syncing with location made for a seamless experience. This was better than booking a personal tour because we could pause it anytime we needed more time to explore on our own. Highly recommended!!”

Walking Luxury Tours

A group walking.

The World’s Best Walking Tours.

Meet the locals, on foot, at eye level..

If you’re like us, you think of travel as more than just a check-list. When you strike out, it’s because you crave experience and discovery, not just monuments and museums. You want to understand what’s behind the touristic façade that most people never penetrate. You travel, because you want to step outside of your life and engage with people of other cultures. That’s why Classic Journeys handcrafts the world’s best walking tours—to immerse you into the history and culture of the places you visit.

Local culture is just two feet away.

Walking is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a local culture. When you’re on foot, the world can’t slide past you faster than you can absorb it. You’ll have time—and proximity—to smell lavender lingering on your clothes even after you return home from Provence. Join us to encounter rainforest tribespeople you never would have met and cottage gardens you never would have seen. Experience the tempo of a Mediterranean village in the hour before sunset in a way you never would have noticed if you breezed through in a vehicle or traveled on your own.

So, what is a walking tour?

We’re glad you asked! Spend part of each morning and afternoon with your feet on the ground, getting up close to the region’s culture and natural history. Your walks might include a village tour, a seaside stroll, or a local guide’s favorite path through an oasis, vineyard, or red rock canyon. Because your group averages just 8-10 guests, your footprint is small. And since your Classic Journeys guide knows all the locals, you can take your time and blend in with the world around you.

Forbes magazine “Luxury Walking Favorites”

If all of this sounds like a great way to explore, you’re in good company. Forbes magazine loves this way of traveling, too, and has called our Tuscany & the Cinque Terre and Morocco tours their “Luxury Walking Favorites”. Join us to see for yourself why the best walking tours in Europe, the U.S., South America, Asia and Africa all have one thing in common; the guests who choose to travel with Classic Journeys.

Frequently Asked Questions

Culture + walking tours, what are walking tours.

Walking tours are vacations where travelers explore their destination on foot, whether a city, village, national park or rural landscape.

How are walking tours conducted?

Our walking tours are led by a local guide, who knows the area you’re visiting inside out. They’ll arrange your walks for the perfect timing so that you can enjoy the surroundings, and avoid the crowds. While you’re walking, our guides always have fascinating information and stories to share.

What makes a good walking tour?

A local guide! With local insight, you’ll be able to tread the routes less traveled, that most visitors haven’t heard of. And for more popular ‘must do’ walks, your guide will know the right time and direction to take avoid crowds and make the most of the surroundings. If for whatever reason the initial route isn’t available, they already have a plan B, even C, ready, so that you can still enjoy your vacation.

How much walking do your walking tours include?

Don’t worry, “walking tour” doesn’t mean you’ll hike, trek or hoof it from inn to inn. Only that you’ll spend part of each morning and/or afternoon with your feet on the ground getting up close to the region’s culture and natural history. That usually adds up to two or more optional daily walks.

Are meals included in the walking tours?

Yes, we’ve tested every hotel for the quality of their catering, planned gourmet pop-up picnics, arranged lunches with locals, and reserved tables in the region’s finest restaurants.

How difficult are the walks on Classic Journeys walking tours?

Our expert local guides will describe walks before they occur; in regions where more strenuous walks are possible, they’ll be offered as alternatives. Often, our vehicle is nearby in case you have a change of heart.

What do Classic Journeys walks include?

The outings might include a village tour, a seaside stroll, or a local guide’s favorite path through an oasis, vineyard, or red rock canyon. Because we average just 10 guests in each group, our footprint is small. We can take our time and blend in with the world around us.

Are your walking tours suitable for solo travelers?

Traveling solo? Walk this way! Nearly a third of our guests are solo travelers who want the thrill of exploration minus the what-ifs of going it all alone. You’ll enjoy the camaraderie of your full-time guide and like-minded travelers. And to make your solo sojourn practical, we offer the lowest single supplements you’re likely to find.

What should I bring on my walking tour?

Your packing list will depend on where you’re traveling, but generally it is worth packing:

  • Walking shoes or boots
  • Comfortable socks
  • Comfortable pants or shorts

What accommodation do walking tours include?

On our luxury walking tours, you’ll be staying in the very best hotels, villas and lodges each destination has to offer. We’ve hand-picked the finest places to stay, so that after each day of culture and walking, you can relax in complete comfort.

Revival of Downtown Abilene Walking Tours kicks off after year-long closure

Downtown Abilene Walking Tours has ended its yearlong hiatus and will kick off with a reopening tour for the public Saturday.

Business owners Trevor and Gina Allen established the downtown tours in May 2018. The idea came to Trevor at work while reflecting on his 2013 cross-country biking expedition to Oregon.

"During the trip I stopped in San Francisco and went on a walking tour with a snazzily dressed hipster playing the ukulele, and I think that subconsciously planted a seed," he said.

With this experience as reference, he came up with his character, "Gus McDusty the cowboy poet," researched history for the city of Abilene and partnered with businesses to make stops along the downtown tour route.

The couple was able to maintain the side business while working other jobs for several years. However, in March 2023, they decided to put Downtown Abilene Walking Tours on pause.

"We were very busy, and something had to give. Sometimes the tours would make good income, and sometimes it was really slow, so we decided that the thing that had to give was the walking tour," Trevor said.

They used the yearlong break to reevaluate business strategies and feel prepared going into May 2024 with simplified goals to maintain their jobs and side passion projects.

"We are going to be pushing private tours to allow us flexibility in our schedule and only do one public tour per month," Trevor said.

The public tours will be every second Saturday of the month and will begin at Vera Hall Minter Park, 209 Cypress Street.

The tours are designed for locals and visitors alike to learn local history, visit businesses and have fun through interactive participation.

Each individual on the tour will receive complimentary free samples and a Downtown Abilene Walking Tour shopping bag with a coupon book for downtown businesses and have the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt along the walking route.

The tours are about two hours, and tickets cost $18.81 — the year Abilene was founded — with a percentage of the proceeds going toward City Light Ministries.

"I work at City Light Ministries, which is a nonprofit working with brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness, poverty and different struggles," Trevor said.

"When we initially designed the tour, a portion of the proceeds went toward City Light, and we're going to continue that to help brothers and sisters become self sustainable, grow and get out of the situations they're in," he said.

Although the Downtown Abilene Walking Tours is part-time for the Allens, they are hopeful to expand in the future.

"I missed doing the tours. I am very relational and love to connect with others. I cherish the presence I have in downtown Abilene, and I'm happy to bring back the tours that bring downtown to life," Trevor said.

Discounts for military, seniors and groups are available. Kids under the age of 5 get to tour for free.

The Chicago History Museum sits on the edge of Old Town, a neighborhood rich in history. The Chicago area was home to the Potawatomi, whose villages were built on these lands. After they were forcibly removed, German farmers settled there to make their homes. Since then, it has served as an enclave for Puerto Rican migrants, a home to the first gay rights organization in the United States, as well a vibrant arts scene.

On this tour, explore stories of recovery from the 1871 Great Chicago Fire and the neighborhood as the center of Chicago bohemianism in the 1960s and 1970s. Highlights include a post-Fire shelter cottage, the Midwest Buddhist Temple, numerous historic residences, and St. Michael’s Church, one of only seven buildings to survive the fire.

Tour runs 1.5 to 2 hours. Meet at the Chicago History Museum.

Free walking tour of Waverley Cemetery for National Archaeology Week 2024

Event description.

Free walking tour of Waverley Cemetery (Sydney, NSW)

The Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA) is delighted to announce that we will be offering a free walking tour of Waverley Cemetery as part of National Archaeology Week (NAW) 2024. The tour will be led by Archaeologist and President of ASHA, Dr Siobhan Lavelle OAM, from 10:30am to 1pm on Sunday 26 May 2024 (AEST)  About Waverley Cemetery: Waverley Cemetery is positioned on an elevated urban site overlooking the Tasman Sea (Pacific Ocean). With over 100,000 burials and inurnments, the cemetery fully occupies its 16 ha. With its spectacular coastal setting, its magnificent monuments, its wealth of genealogical, historical, architectural and artistic information, Waverley Cemetery ranks among the distinctive and picturesque cemeteries of the world.

Waverley Cemetery opened on 1 August 1877 with sections for Church of England 3 acres, Roman Catholic 2 acres and all other denominations (General) 5 acres. It reached its present size in 1895. The site retains much of its Victorian layout, the cemetery being divided into twenty numbered sections. Grave plots are laid out in a grid pattern with structures mainly of white marble with some granite and sandstone. Many tall monuments such as columns, broken columns, pedestals with urns and obelisks create a strong vertical emphasis.

Major monuments prominent in the landscape include the 1798 Irish Monument; the Governor Duff monument; the Henry Kendall monument; the Johnston family vault; the Greek Revival monument to Sir James Martin; and the Chowder Bay Monument. The Stuart family vault dating from 1914-1916, is a surviving work from the architectural partnership of Chicago-trained Walter Burley Griffin, Marion Mahony Griffin and J. Burcham Clamp, a Sydney architect. Several of these will be shown on the tour, which will also visit some unique individual headstones and monuments within the cemetery.

About the tour leader:  The tour will be led by Dr Siobhan Lavelle OAM. Siobhan has particular interest and expertise in cemetery conservation.

When: 10:30am to 1:00pm, Sunday 26 May 2024 (AEST).

Running Tours Offer a Fun Way to Visit a New Place—Here’s Where to Try Them

The best way to travel is by breaking a sweat..

  • Copy Link copied

Running tours are great for those wanting to maximize sightseeing opportunities.

Photo by Marnie Kunz of Runstreet NYC

Six years ago, I suffered through one of the worst bouts of jet lag in my life. I had been traveling in Southeast Asia for about 10 days, but my mind and body were still stuck in Vampire mode. When I arrived in Siem Reap in Cambodia, my hotel concierge suggested I go for an early morning run to Angkor Wat. It would be a simple 5K, he told me—a scenic run that would recalibrate my body clock. I had a pair of sneakers and limited experience as a runner. He gave me a 5 a.m. appointment with the general manager, who would be my guide.

That morning, I ran from the city to the temples and arrived just in time to watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat. The experience put me on a runner’s high and made me a travel runner, aka that person who schedules a run in every city they visit. Over the years, I’ve run with guides in Tokyo, Washington, D.C., Torino, Italy, and more. I’ve even curated my own runs, reading about sites I’ve wanted to see in cities including Milan and Athens and dropping pins for my personalized 5K tour.

The advantage of running tours? “You explore the sites at your own pace, learn about the culture, see areas you might never have discovered on your own, and really focus on being present,” says Lena Andersson, founder of Go! Running Tours, a company operating in more than 65 cities and six continents. “You just need a pair of running shoes and an open mind.”

Running tours, long or short, immerse you in a location and its vibe. They cover more ground in less time than a walking tour, leaving more time to take in some lesser-known sites. Plus, you don’t have the headache of parking and locking up a two-wheeler like you would if you were sightseeing by bike. A running tour isn’t just about culture, curiosity, and combatting jet lag; it also brings a sense of accomplishment.

What to expect on a running tour

Running tours are usually a mix of running, site stops, and brisk walking. Most guides will share anecdotes as you run, but don’t feel like you need to keep up a conversation. Shorter running tours tend to average five kilometers (which takes about an hour), but you can find tours that go 10 kilometers or longer. Safety is always a priority, so guides use their expertise to design paths that avoid highly trafficked roads. You can schedule a running tour for any time of the day, but early morning hours are better for avoiding crowds.

There are two main types of tours: private and group. The advantage of a private running tour is personalization—you set the pace, intensity, and distance. Want to run Rome’s imperial monuments, baroque piazzas, and enjoy the Eternal City’s best cappuccino spots? You can do that.

“Private tours are ideal because you set the pace, the goals, and what you want to do,” says Raoul Spronken, founder of RunningTours.Net , an online marketplace for independent running tours around the world.

Group tours, on the other hand, are follow-the-leader runs. They can bring together more than 20 people for a set route, though some tours have multiple guides to create smaller groups when necessary. It’s a fun way to meet people, but it has no room for improvisation.

Running-tour offerings include the chance to learn about the medieval hot spots of the Netherlands’ Maastricht, street art in New York City, and local cuisine in Bangkok, Thailand.

Where to go on a running tour
