Queen Elizabeth and Tom Cruise Became Secret Friends Before Her Death

Hollywood royalty, meet British royalty.

Tom Cruise

In the weeks before her death, Queen Elizabeth, 96, proved it’s never too late to make a new friend—except her new friend was none other than Tom Cruise, who Her late Majesty “really hit it off” with over the summer, according to Page Six .

The Top Gun actor was in the U.K. as a part of the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, but, because of ongoing mobility issues, Her late Majesty was unable to meet him at the festivities.

“The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed to not have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him,” a source says. “Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together.”

The Mission Impossible star was such a huge hit that he got to fire a ceremonial gun. “She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch,” the source says. “He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter.”

The twosome’s friendship was set to continue on with another lunch date, but the Queen died on September 8 at Balmoral Castle before they could reunite.

In a television interview earlier this year, Cruise said of the Queen “she’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic.”

Hey may be showbiz royalty, but it no doubt would have been exciting for Tom Cruise to grow close to an actual royal, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in the weeks before her death.

According to Roya Nikkhah, Royal Editor for the Sunday Times , the 60-year-old actor built up a friendship with the Queen during her final summer at Windsor Castle this year, before she departed her Berkshire residence for Balmoral.

After the event, Cruise is said to have mixed with the Queen’s guests during a private drinks reception in the royal box, where he met fans and posed for photographs. The Queen herself, however, who was grappling with mobility issues in her final months, returned directly to the Castle for her comfort.

An unnamed source explained: ‘The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle… Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together. She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter.’ This was quite the honour given the Queen was said to dislike helicopters landing on her lawns, having reportedly been dismayed by the damage caused by then-president Donald Trump, who flew into Buckingham Palace by helicopter when he visited Buckingham Palace in 2019.

Their time together reportedly included a photo op where the two posed for pictures together, and a moment when Cruise was allied to fire a ceremonial gun. The proposed lunch ultimately didn’t take place, however, as the monarch died on 8 September, before their reunion could take place.

Ahead of his appearance at the pageant in May, Cruise spoke highly of the Queen in an interview with presenters Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham, dubbing her ‘a woman that I greatly admire.’ He went on: ‘I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her… the world knows the dignity, devotion and kindness, that is what I have always felt about her.’

He added that he was ‘very honoured’ to be part of A Gallop Through History , in which he introduced two segments throughout the performance, dubbing it a ‘real privilege’. He stated: ‘I love the history of England, and I just have great respect for the Queen. So when they asked, I instantly said, “Yeah, it would be my honour”.’

Cruise previously met the monarch’s late husband, Prince Phlip, at a Buckingham Palace charity dinner in 2017. He recalled: ‘We were talking about pilots… and he was telling me the wonderful story of how he got the first helicopter into Buckingham Palace during [the Queen’s] coronation… I was this close to going, “I’d like to land a helicopter, if you ever need a helicopter, someone to pick you up, I think I could put it right there”.’

Cruise has been associated with other Royal Family members, too, meeting the late Diana, Princess of Wales in the ’90s – and later attending her funeral – and now enjoying a cordial relationship with today’s Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, who accompanied him to London’s Top Gun: Maverick premiere in May.

He also described having a "lovely" meeting with the queen's husband, Prince Philip, at a Buckingham Palace charity dinner in 2017. Cruise said the pair bonded over their love of flying.

"There was a moment... we were talking about pilots, we had to talk about helicopters, and he was telling me the wonderful story of how he got the first helicopter into Buckingham Palace during [the queen’s] coronation," said Cruise. "Fantastic story. I was this close to going, ‘I’d like to land a helicopter, if you ever need a helicopter, someone to pick you up, I think I could put it right there.’"

A spokesperson for the Prince of Wales, 40, and Cruise did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment at the time.

According to the outlet, Cruise has spent much of his time in the U.K. in recent months. He has been filming scenes for his upcoming film "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two." He has been spotted flying himself to various locations around the country.

Tom Cruise has opened up about his involvement in the Queen ’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, saying that he admires her “tremendous dignity” and “devotion”.

The Top Gun star was just one of the celebrities present at the musical and theatrical event ‘A Gallop Through History’ which took place at Windsor Castle on Sunday evening.

Looking tanned and relaxed, Cruise strode past spectators, but when spotted happily posed for selfies.

The 59-year-old was invited to the event to introduce the Kings Troop Royal Artillery and spoke to ITV hosts of his delight at being there.

“It’s a real privilege,” he began. “I was just very honoured [when I was asked to be part of the Jubilee celebrations].

“She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion.”

He continued: “What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her.

“She has met presidents, world leaders, people from all walks of life.”

On the subject of the American people’s reverence for the monarch, he replied: “Not just Americans, but the world knows [of] the dignity, devotion and kindness, that is what I have always felt about her.

“Someone that understands her position and has held it through a history that's just been extraordinary [over] the past 70 years.”

He went on to speak of his affection for the UK, saying: “Even before I started producing movies, I would bring them here to England because I just liked the crews and the people.

“I love the history of England and I just have great respect for the Queen. So when they asked I instantly said ‘Yeah, it would be my honour’. It’s wonderful.”

Singer Katherine Jenkins echoed Cruise’s comments, stating it was a “massive honour” to be involved.

She said: “It’s so amazing to be part of today, the kick-off to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

“It’s a massive honour, of course, to be invited to sing for Her Majesty at any time, but I think especially for the show this evening.

“I’m a massive fan of hers. I think she’s so incredible, such a great role model and it’s nice to have the opportunity to all come together and show our deep gratitude for all that she’s done for the country and the Commonwealth.”

Comedian Omid Djalli, who played a character called The Herald in the event, also said it was a “real honour” to perform.

“I think anyone watching this show, even if they’re a staunch republican or if they’re a royalist, they will feel pride in being British.

“And I think there’s no denying, you know, especially having seen The Crown, you can’t not feel affection for a woman who came on the throne and then said, ‘I promise however long I live, be it long or short, that I will serve my people and serve my country’ and the fact that she’s done that, even when people have behaved badly all around her, she has been very steadfast and very true to her word.

“So from a human point of view, you have to respect that – that she’s done everything that she said in the last 70 years.”

Queen Elizabeth II reportedly “really hit it off” with Tom Cruise, after she invited him for afternoon tea at Windsor Castle. By Hayley Peppin

QUEEN ELIZABETH II met a number of unlikely celebrities throughout her 70-year reign, including Lady Gaga and Will.i.am, but towards the end of her life she struck up a surprising friendship with Tom Cruise.

The late monarch and the Hollywood veteran apparently “really hit it off” over the summer, according to The Sunday Times in London.

Cruise was a feature of Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations back in May, where he guest-hosted the historic commemoration’s ‘A Gallop Through History’ event at Windsor Castle.

But due to mobility issues, Queen Elizabeth had to leave the equine pageant early. She was reportedly so “disappointed” to not have met the 60-year-old action star that she invited him for afternoon tea at Windsor Castle on a separate occasion.

“The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him,” a source told The Times .

The visit was such a success that the Queen not only took a few photos with Cruise but allowed him to fire a ceremonial gun while at the castle, the publication reports.

She even permitted him to personally pilot and land his helicopter on the castle grounds. In 2019, the Queen was reportedly disgruntled by Donald Trump’s helicopter travels during a state visit — as he damaged the lawn at Buckingham Palace and insisted on flying into the grounds of the palace twice in the day.

“She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter,” the source continued.

But their lunch date was not meant to be, as the Queen died on September 8 at age 96.

During Cruise’s ‘A Gallop Through History’ speech, he spoke of his admiration for the UK’s longest-reigning monarch.

“She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion.

“What she has accomplished has been historic. I just remember always as a kid seeing photos of her.”

Just days later, Cruise walked the red carpet alongside Prince William and Princess Catherine at the Top Gun: Maverick premier in London.

At the time, Cruise said of William, “We have a lot in common. We both love England and we’re both aviators, we both love flying.”

They may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the late Queen had an incredible secret friendship with Hollywood actor Tom Cruise. This week, it was claimed that the monarch and the Mission Impossible actor "really hit it off" over the summer.

Cruise had a special role during Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee celebrations - and caused quite the commotion when he walked up to Windsor Castle for a horse-themed event in May titled A Gallop Through History. The actor was tasked with introducing a key moment of the evening, a performance by The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery, while the smiling Queen watched on.

"It takes huge courage and discipline to do what they do, galloping with guns that were fired in the battles of the First World War, weighing one-and-a-half tonnes, with no brakes," he said,

"The drive demonstrates absolute trust between horse and rider."

Before the proceedings kicked off, the A-lister spoke to presenters Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham, revealing it was an "honour" to have been asked to attend.

"I was just very honoured. She's a woman I greatly admire. She has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic," he said.

"I remember as a kid, seeing photos of her. I travelled around a lot and I came to England to make movies in 1982. I love the history and I just have great respect for her.

"When they asked I instantly said 'it would be my honour to be here'."

Cruise reportedly delighted many of the Queen's guests and posed for selfies with fans, but the late monarch was experiencing mobility problems so did not meet him.

The Queen was said to have been very disappointed not to meet Cruise, so later invited him back to have tea and a special tour of Windsor Castle.

The Top Gun star was given the full VIP treatment and completed his lifelong dream of landing a helicopter at a royal residence, according to the Sunday Times.

A source said: "Just the two of them had tea together. She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter."

Cruise, who has previously confessed his love for England, was reportedly going to meet the Queen again for a lunch date.

Tragically, that reunion never happened because Her Majesty sadly died in September at the age of 96.

It's not just the Queen who took a liking to Tom, as he accompanied the Prince and Princess of Wales down the red carpet at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere in May.

The superstar actor was hailed as a "perfect gentleman" after royal fans spotted a sweet moment between him and Kate.

She was wearing some very high heels, which could have been an issue while navigating some stairs, but Tom kindly offered Kate his hand.

Fans took to Twitter to praise the actor, with one writing: "Tom Cruise being a perfect gentleman tonight!! Kate just stunning."

Another added: "A true fan girl moment for the Duchess of Cambridge - as Tom Cruise helps her up the steps at the Top Gun Maverick premiere, with Prince William looking super happy for his wife!"

Speaking at the premiere, Tom heaped praise on the entire royal family - and admitted he has a lot in common with William.

"I was there for her and I greatly admire her dedication to the country. They do so many wonderful things for so many people," he said.

"We have a lot in common. We loved England. The Duke and I are both aviators so we love flying."

Queen Elizabeth found a secret friend in Tom Cruise before her death

The queen's platinum jubilee celebrations that marked her 70th anniversary on the throne had been attended by cruise. however, the ailing royal was unable to meet the 'mission impossible' star as she suffering from mobility issues..

In the weeks before Queen Elizabeth's death, the late monarch had found a new pal in Hollywood star Tom Cruise, suggests a new report.

Cruise had spoken of his admiration for the Queen during a television interview that happened before the Platinum Jubilee's Gallop Through History equine pageant in May.

According to Page Six, she and the 'Top Gun' actor "really hit it off" over the summer, a source told a British media outlet.

"The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him. Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together," the source said, reported Page Six.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the Royal Family Twitter account announced. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Her Majesty’s death comes after Buckingham Palace released a statement earlier that day, revealing that her medical team is “concerned” for her “health.”

“Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace’s statement read. “The Queen remains comfortable and at Balmoral.”

Prior to her passing, Elizabeth was the longest-reigning monarch in British history. She was crowned as queen in 1953 and is survived by her and her late husband Prince Phillip’s children, Prince Charles ,  Princess Anne ,  Prince Andrew  and  Prince Edward , along with eight grandchildren, including  Prince William  and  Prince Harry , and 12 great-grandchildren.

Over the years, various celebrities interacted with the late queen at various star-studded events in England. Liam Payne , for one, was invited to Buckingham Palace for the 2017 Queen’s Young Leaders Awards Ceremony. Following the event, the singer recounted his experience with Elizabeth on Instagram alongside a photo of them shaking hands.

“An absolute honour to meet the Queen today on such a fantastic occasion,” Liam  wrote at the time. “Privileged to share the room with such inspirational @queensyoungleaders, hear their stories and how they are helping to rebuild and preserve a sometimes broken world.”

This wasn’t the first time he had the honor of meeting Elizabeth. Liam, alongside his former One Direction band members, also shook hands with the monarch in November 2012 when performing at the Royal Albert Hall for the Royal Variety Performance.

“Today, I met The Queen,” band member Harry Styles wrote on Twitter at the time. “Amazing night … Can’t believe it. Night!! xx.”

In 2009, both Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga shook hands with the queen. They both performed at the Royal Variety Performance that same year.

Years later, the former Disney Channel star recalled meeting the queen. “Actually, meeting her was scarier than the performance because I had to remember so much,” Miley shared on a French radio show in September 2013.

Tom Cruise, right, and Alan Titchmarsh.

Cruise v Titchmarsh: a right royal smackdown at the Queen’s platinum jubilee

Eyebrows have been raised with the announcement that the Tom Cruise will host part of the celebration – but can anything see off the Gardeners’ World heavyweight?

A t this stage it’s honestly hard to know what the Queen thinks of her imminent platinum jubilee. On the one hand, the outpouring of patriotic pageantry will provide a perfect distraction from all the terrible things her family keeps doing. But on the other, she’s going to have to sit through an awful lot of faff.

This week, the centrepiece of this faff was announced. Set within the grounds of Windsor Castle, the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebration will take place in front of a live audience of 4,000, and reportedly cover 400 years of British history. Helen Mirren will play Queen Elizabeth I and deliver a speech from 1588. There will be a long section about the Gunpowder Plot. There will be a lot of horses; 500 of them, in fact. And Katherine Jenkins. And Ant and Dec. It sounds tortuous. The Queen has had to put up with this sort of thing for 70 years now. You can’t help but feel that she’d probably just prefer a quiet night in with the snooker.

As tedious as the whole thing sounds, one thing alone will save the day. That thing, slightly unbelievably, is Tom Cruise . The show will reportedly be formed of four acts. Mirren will host one, Damian Lewis, Adjoa Andoh and Alan Titchmarsh will host the others, but they are all set to be blasted out of the water by Cruise’s turn. Nobody knows why this is happening or how it came to be, but it doesn’t matter. You will watch the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebration, just because someone booked Tom Cruise for it.

The Queen with James Bond, shortly before she skydived into the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

Realistically, nobody knows which Cruise will turn up. We may get the showboating action star, who will arrive on stage after leaping out of an exploding fighter jet before singlehandedly foiling the Gunpowder Plot by karate-kicking Guy Fawkes’s head clean off his shoulders. We may get overly reverent Cruise, who will be so humbled by his surroundings that he’ll lose focus and mangle the word “Leicestershire” beyond all recognition. If he wants to make friends, he’ll turn up with a T-shirt cannon loaded with coconut cake and blast slices straight into the mouths of his audience. If he wants to be memorable, he could Man v Food his way through a pile of identical curries . We simply just don’t know.

However, it would be wrong to assume that he can waltz into Windsor and run away with the whole show. If the Queen does turn up to watch the thing – and that’s still a big if, given her recent health concerns – then Cruise runs the risk of being second banana to Titchmarsh.

I mean it. If you’re the Queen, Titchmarsh is always going to be the real draw here. Think of all the shows the woman has been forced to endure in the last 20 years alone. Brian May played guitar on her roof and she couldn’t crack a smile. Atomic Kitten sang Dancing in the Street and she couldn’t have looked more bored. At this stage in her life, the woman has been subjected to the equivalent of 300 hours of elongated Paul McCartney Hey Jude singalongs, and the strain is definitely showing.

Perhaps the closest thing to Cruise that the Queen has ever encountered is the James Bond skit she performed at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, in which she pretended to jump out of a helicopter. Remember, this was Bond – a decades-old touchstone of British culture – and the woman scowled through the whole thing like she had a gun to her head. You sense that maybe, just maybe, she might not have seen Vanilla Sky.

The only time that the Queen has palpably expressed any enthusiasm for anything in public is that gif where she saw some cows, pointed at them and delightedly shouted the word “Cows!”. Titchmarsh is the personification of that cow gif. He’s all dirty fingernails and wax jackets. If the Queen can summon the energy to attend this event, it will be solely so she can see him, point at him and shout “Titchmarsh!”. Cruise might be one of the most famous men of all time, but even he can’t compete with star power like that.

The two were set to meet for the second time. However, it did not materialize as the queen passed away on September 8 at the age of 96.

Cruise never got his second meeting with the queen. He then opened up about how much she respected the late monarch as a person while he was attending the Platinum Jubilee festivities .

Cruise earlier said that he loves Britain  because of the beautiful countryside, friendly locals, great sights, and history.

Aside from that, the actor has filmed several movies in the United Kingdom. He was also filming parts of the upcoming film "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" in the U.K.

The actor also revealed that he can relax in Britain without being swarmed by fans and autograph hunters, adding that he likes Britain's cows and sheep.

Queen Elizabeth's Death

King Charles announced the death of his mother at the time, saying that it was a "moment of great sadness" for him and all the members of the family.

He added that he knows that his mother's loss will be "deeply felt through the country," extending to the Realms and the Commonwealth of Britain.

The queen passed away at Balmoral on a Thursday afternoon. She has been placed on the throne since 1952 and became witness to massive social changes, as reported by BBC News .

Queen Elizabeth became heir to the throne at age 10 when her father became King George VI.

Tom Cruise has taken multi-tasking to a whole new level, appearing to film his coronation concert skit and his MTV Movie & TV award acceptance speech in the same sky-high shoot.

Both of the star's cameo appearances appeared in shows which aired on Sunday evening, with the King's concert taking place live from Windsor Castle , and the MTV Movie & TV Awards switching from a live show in Santa Monica, California, to a pre-recorded show on the same night.

Pic: MTV Movie and TV Awards

Cruise delivered his pre-recorded airborne messages while at the controls of his Top Gun Warbird plane, wearing the same pale blue top, aviator sunglasses, green headphones and headset.

Messages aside, the only difference in the clips was the prop added to the backseat for his MTV award acceptance speech - his golden popcorn trophy for best performance in a movie for last year's blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

Telling film fans "there's just no better feeling" than entertaining them, he went on to plug his next Mission: Impossible movie, which is due out in the summer.

In Cruise's brief royal message from the same cockpit, he highlighted the fact the King qualified as a pilot, saying: "Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time."

Cruise then saluted and steered the plane away from the camera at speed in the coronation concert clip.

The actor is an experienced aviator and was referring to the King's own experience in the Royal Navy and RAF, where he learned to fly both planes and helicopters.

Former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan also highlighted the monarch's "action man" side during the concert.

Speaking in a pre-filmed video, Brosnan said the King had developed a "host of action man skills" over the years, as old footage was played of him skiing, windsurfing and flying.

Adventurer Bear Grylls also reminded viewers the King "even took on the Royal Marines commando training - one of the hardest programmes in the world".

“We made such a mistake killing you off”: Tom Cruise Desperately Tried to Bring Back 1 Mission Impossible Character But Failed

Tom Cruise lived and made the Mission: Impossible franchise a ginormous hit franchise with critical accolades embedded in its glorious cinematic journey over the years. However, Cruise was not devoid of any mistakes and the actor regretted killing off one actor too early.

Cruise’s celebrated action franchise created a legacy since the first Mission: Impossible movie was released in 1996 and Cruise’s titular character Ethan Hunt— an agent in the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) espionage agency lived on with a huge fanbase. Of course, the franchise has been a spectacle but the death of many characters over the years in the movie series definitely rattled some fans.

Tom Cruise Convinced His The Outsiders Co-Star To Join Mission: Impossible

Mission: Impossible franchise has the most prominent role in forging Tom Cruise’s legacy as an action star. The franchise has pushed the actor to the edge of the limit and Cruise has been doing his own action stunts for the movies he appears in even today defying the burden of age. Still, the Top Gun star has one regret and that is killing off his co-star Emilio Estevez in the first Mission: Impossible movie itself.

“The way Tom had explained it, he said, ‘Look, I’d love for you to come and join the cast. The whole opening number where everybody gets wiped out, it’s going to be a lot of well-known people and all of them are going to go uncredited and it’s really going to set up the level of peril for Ethan.’ And I said, ‘I’m in. You don’t have to ask me twice, I’m in.’ And then afterwards, obviously, the movie’s a giant hit,” Estevez said in an interview with Uproxx .

“I think I will”: Ian McKellen’s Agent Warned Him Not to Turn Down $546M Tom Cruise Film, He Showed Him Why He’s Magneto

However, fans might recall Cruise had a brief cameo in Estevez’s Young Guns where Cruise was killed off in the uncredited role. Was it a payback? “No,” the actor said adding “it wasn’t that at all.” But even before that, the duo appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 movie classic The Outsiders, and the movie was the beginning of the duo recognizing each other’s prowess.

Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible Regret

Estevez’s brief cameo in the movie was good, in fact too good for Cruise as the actor regretted killing Estevez’s character in the movie . Estevez who played Jack Harmon in the movie revealed that he could have been the recurring star in the franchise as Cruise was very much interested in bringing him back. “Still making them!” Estevez told Uproxx reflecting on the franchise that still producing movies.

“Tom was like, we were doing a run the year after that and he says, “Man, we made such a mistake killing you off,” he added.

But Cruise was not the only one to consider Estevez’s return John Woo who directed Mission: Impossible 2 very much wanted Jack Harmon in the movie.

“He and John Woo were trying to figure out a way to bring me back for part two, but it just didn’t make sense. I thought you could have because with all the masks, right?” Estevez added.

But it never came close to fruition, but still, Estevez’s resurrection would bring another angle to the narratives, or perhaps, another fan-favorite character in the long run. Currently. The franchise has one more installment, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 slated for release.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2 is expected to hit theaters on 21 May 2025.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

‘I thought I had been cast in a Tom Cruise film – until I was asked to touch myself on camera’

Tom Cruise

On an otherwise unremarkable day in 2019, jobbing actor John Taylor* received an email that would change his life forever.

He did not initially recognise the sender’s name but a quick Google search revealed Doug Liman was a huge Hollywood director, behind blockbusters including The Bourne Identity.

Doug said he was looking for undiscovered talent for his latest movie set in space starring Tom Cruise and John had been recommended by a producer he had previously worked with.

‘It was surreal, exciting, and weird,’ John recalled after receiving the offer; global superstardom, it seemed, was now in touching distance.

But first John needed to get in shape for the physically intense role and was instructed by Doug, and Donna Langley, the chairperson of the film’s producer Universal, to undergo martial arts training.

He was asked to pay $800 (£638) upfront for the teaching which, at the time, ‘didn’t seem like a huge deal’ to John, who had been paying for acting classes. It was another skill to add to his arsenal.

Doug would also call him multiple times a day, for hours on end, and ask him to watch dozens of films back-to-back, from dusk until dawn, and write analyses of the characters.

Doug Liman

Eager to impress, John recalled to the makers of the Apple TV Plus documentary Hollywood Con Queen : ‘The whole time I was waiting for my phone to ring to do whatever they needed.’

But then John’s prescribed preparation took a horrific turn.

He was told Donna wanted to make sure he could perform a specific scene in the film and was made to jump on a Skype call. Her camera was switched off.

Donna asked him to act out chatting up and then kissing a ‘beautiful’ woman. John did as instructed but her feedback was not positive. She said she didn’t feel that he ‘believed’ it.

‘She was right,’ John recalled. ‘It was incredibly awkward and I didn’t believe it and it was uncomfortable and I didn’t want to do it.’

Donna Langley

After an hours-long break for John to ‘loosen up’, they reconvened on Skype and Donna asked him to reenact the scene with his trousers off.

John said he obliged as he was wearing underpants and his waist downwards was not visible on the camera.

But then he was asked to touch himself.

‘And then I snapped,’ John said. ‘I was like, “No, this is ridiculous. This is not OK what you’re doing.”

‘It was the strongest combination of anger and of feeling upset I’ve ever felt – to the point where I was literally shaking. I was completely disrespected.’

Hollywood Con Queen Hargobind Punjabi Tahilramani

When Doug apologised to John for Donna’s behaviour, only to ask for more money minutes later, it dawned on John he had been scammed.

A con artist had been impersonating the Hollywood power players and swindled $5,000 (£3,989) out of him.

After the realisation, John said: ‘[I thought] this is a really horrible person who uses people for sport.’

Donna and Doug had been impersonated by one man, Hargobind Punjabi Tahilramani, also known as the Hollywood Con Queen, whose crimes have been explored in the Apple three-part series.

Scott Johnson of The Hollywood Reporter

Tahilramani had pretended to be multiple Hollywood executives to dupe more than 300 victims out for more than $1m (£797,999) by offering them non-existent film work in Indonesia between 2013 and 2020.

With the help of The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Johnson, who first broke the story, filmmaker Chris Smith, who also directed the Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, has turned the extraordinary case into a gripping documentary.

For the three-part docuseries, Tiger King executive producer Chris even spoke to Tahilramani, who was born in Indonesia but had been living in the UK, via Zoom, as he recounted to Metro.co.uk ahead of its release.

On his first impression of Tahilramani, Chris said: ‘He was very in control of the way that he presented himself and the way that he revealed information.

Chris Smith

‘I think he was attempting to manipulate and control our dialogue and communication.

‘But what makes him so masterful is that it felt very genuine and real. I sympathise with the victims.’

Chris also said that during the making of the Hollywood Con Queen, he had concerns he had been sucked into Tahilramani’s web of manipulation.

He added: ‘By the end of the series, we found ourselves in Indonesia exploring all these things that he wanted us to explore.

‘We realised that maybe we had fallen prey to the same sort of manipulation that his victims have fallen prey to.

Hollywood Con Queen Hargobind Punjabi Tahilramani

‘It was hard to understand always what was real, and there’s part of him that feels very relatable and genuine.

‘But it was trying to disentangle what was real, and what was not real, that was the constant push and pull of the process of trying to make this series.’

What also emerges from the Hollywood Con Queen is that Tahilramani’s motivation was not purely financial.

‘It’s hard to say [what his main aim was],’ Chris, who worked on the documentary for four years, explained.

‘He was living a good life in London and had nice clothes and went to nice restaurants. I don’t think the money was immaterial.

‘But from our perspective, it felt like it wasn’t the primary motivation, it felt like it was more about something else. It was about psychological manipulation, and destroying people’s dreams.

‘I don’t think we can ever fully know.’

Tahilramani was arrested following an FBI investigation on November 25, 2020 in a £60-a-night Aparthotel in  Manchester .

On June 6, 2023 a British judge ruled that he be extradited to the US to face trial for his crimes.

Tahilramani remains in the UK and is fighting extradition.

*Names have been changed.

Hollywood Con Queen is available to stream on Apple TV Plus from May 8.
