Marking his first official visit to Turkey since he took office, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif landed in Ankara Tuesday for a three-day trip accompanied by a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and Minister for Commerce and Investment Naveed Qamar. The premier’s arrival coincided with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's official visit to Turkey will bring a "new dimension" to bilateral ties between the two countries, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said after meeting him on Wednesday.

"Met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of brotherly Pakistan. His timely visit will bring new dimensions to our outstanding relations," Çavuşoğlu said on Twitter.

Sharif landed in the Turkish capital on Tuesday on a three-day official visit , his first tour to Turkey since taking office in April.

During the meeting, Sharif expressed the importance of increasing bilateral trade volume to $5 billion over the next three years, according to a statement by Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.

"The prime minister noted that the bilateral relations were exceptionally warm as the people of the two countries shared special bonds that dated back centuries," the ministry said in a statement.

Sharif also highlighted convergence between the two countries on a range of regional and international issues, it added.

In his address to the Turkey-Pakistan Business Council on Tuesday evening, he said Islamabad wanted to boost bilateral trade and cultural ties with Ankara.

Sharif is scheduled to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan later in the day, which will be followed by a joint press conference.

PM Shehaz's visit to Ankara postponed

Visit postponed at the last moment due to bad weather and ongoing relief operations in Turkiye

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's visit to Ankara, scheduled for today (Wednesday), was postponed at the last moment due to the ongoing relief and rescue operations in Turkiye following the devastating earthquake.

Express News, quoting official sources, reported that the prime minister was supposed to leave for Turkiye in the morning but the visit has been postponed due to bad weather and the Turkish leadership's engagements related to the ongoing rehabilitation efforts.

Sources added that PM Shehbaz would not be able to visit the affected areas as helicopter could not fly during bad weather, while the president and vice president of Turkiye are also engaged in relief activities.

The visit is expected to be rescheduled and the new dates will be anounced later.

Federal Minister for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb had earlier announced that the prime minister would be travelling to Ankara to express solidarity with the people of Turkey and convey his condolences to Turkish President Erdogan over the deaths caused by the earthquake.

The inofrmation minister had said that the All-Party Conference (APC) called by the premier on February 9 would be postponed and a new date would be announced in consultation with the allies.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged solidarity through ‘tangible and timely material support for suffering humanity’ after Turkey and Syria were struck by devastating earthquakes that killed over 4,000 people.

Taking to his official Twitter handle, the premier stated that “24 hours after the devastating earthquake hit Turkiye and Syria, [the] scenes of death & destruction are mind-numbing”.

“It breaks the heart to witness [the] sheer scale of unfolding human tragedy,” he added.

Shehbaz establishes fund

The information minister also announced that PM Shehbaz decided to establish the prime minister's relief fund to support the earthquake victims of the "brotherly country" Turkey in during difficult times.

The federal cabinet said that it would donate one month's salary to the relief fund, Marriyum said via her Twitter account.

The premier also appealed to the people to generously help Turkey.

Devastating earthquake

Rescue teams worked early on Tuesday to release people trapped in the rubble of buildings in southern Turkey as the death toll in the country from a devastating earthquake a day earlier rose to nearly 3,000.

The magnitude 7.8 quake hit Turkey and neighbouring Syria early on Monday, toppling entire apartment blocks, wrecking hospitals, and leaving thousands more people injured or homeless.

Nearly 8,000 people have been rescued from 4,758 buildings destroyed in the tremors a day earlier, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said in its latest statement.

Turkey insults Pakistan, refuses to host PM Shehbaz Sharif

Islamabad: Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif has been slapped with an international-level insult by earthquake hit Turkey.

There has been devastation due to the earthquake in Turkey. Countries around the world are sending relief materials and rescue teams to Turkey.

But, Pakistan tried to capitalize on this disaster as an opportunity, which backfired. In fact, Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif announced his visit to Ankara to show solidarity with Turkey. He did not think that the country which is currently facing a natural disaster, resources should not be spent on VIP visits. In such a situation, Turkey itself refused to host Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif.

“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will leave for Ankara tomorrow morning, he will express his condolences and condolences to President Erdoğan for the destruction of the earthquake, the loss of life, and the people of Turkey. Due to Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey, the APC convened on Thursday February 9 is being postponed, a new date will be announced in consultation with the allies,” Pakistan’s Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said in a statement on Twitter.

However, hours after her tweet, Azam Jamil, former special assistant to the prime minister of Turkey, took to social media to announce his country’s reluctance to host Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif.

“The last thing Turkey wants at a time like this is to look after state guests. Please send relief staff only,” he tweeted.

The last thing Turkey wants at a time like this is to look after state guests. Please send relief staff only. — Azam Jamil اعظم (@AzamJamil53) February 7, 2023

What was Pakistan’s excuse for canceling Shehbaz Sharif’s Turkey trip?

Pakistan’s Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Turkey has been postponed. She said that Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz’s visit has been postponed in view of the ongoing relief work after the massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria on Monday morning.

“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to establish the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to support the earthquake victims of our brother country Turkey in their difficult times. The cabinet has announced to donate 1 month salary to the relief fund. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appealed for the generous help of our brother country Turkey,” Maryam Aurangzeb tweeted.

Shehbaz Sharif was scheduled to leave for Turkey today. He sent a 51-member rescue team and also set up a relief fund. But, Pakistan itself is poor, in such a situation how much financial help it will be able to provide to Turkey is under question.

More than 8000 killed in Turkey and Syria

The earthquake in Turkey and Syria has killed more than 8300 people so far, while millions of people have been injured and were trapped in the debris.

The epicenter of this devastating earthquake was in Kahramanmaras, central Turkey. The tremors were felt as far away as Greenland. Aftershocks and extremely cold weather of this earthquake have further worsened the situation. It is also raining in many areas, which has made relief and rescue operations more difficult.

Pakistan also sent relief material to Turkey

Pakistan has sent over 21 tonnes of relief material to earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria. A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) spokesperson said two PIA flights on behalf of NDMA left Islamabad for Istanbul and Damascus on Wednesday morning.

He said PIA flights PK-705 and PK-9135 carrying 7.4 tonnes and 14 tonnes of cargo (earthquake-relief aid) left Islamabad for Istanbul and Damascus at 8:45 am and 10:30 am respectively. The spokesman elaborated that the 14 tonnes of aid, which was sent to Damascus, also included winter tents and blankets

Close relations between Pakistan and Turkey

The relations between Pakistan and Turkey are very strong. The two countries are also working closely in the defence and trade sectors.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan blindly supports Pakistan in the name of Islam. This is the reason why Turkey has supported Pakistan on the Kashmir issue at the United Nations (UN).

Erdogan himself and the foreign minister there have raised the Kashmir issue several times in the United Nations. This is the same Turkey, which has excellent relations with Israel, while having an old enmity with Palestine.

'No need to come.. busy in quake relief works': Embarrassment for Pak PM as Turkey asks to cancel his visit

According to pakistani media reports, pm sharif and foreign minister bilawal bhutto were scheduled to visit ankara on february 8 in solidarity with the victims killed in the earthquake..

Ajeet Kumar

Notably, Turkey, which is the worst-earthquake-affected country, was hit by a massive quake on Monday, resulting in the killing of more than 9,500 people. According to the Turkish authorities, the toll is expected to only rise in the coming days as scores of people are still trapped under the debris of skyscraper buildings.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan’s information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb informed that the debt-ridden Prime Minister would leave for Ankara on Wednesday morning. “He will express his condolences and condolences to President Erdogan for the destruction of the earthquake, the loss of life, and the people of Turkey. Due to Prime Minister’s visit to Turkey, the APC convened on Thursday is being postponed, a new date will be announced in consultation with the allies," she said.

Pakistan says permission denied due to 'bad weather'

Hours after her tweet, Azam Jamil, former special assistant to Prime Minister, took to social media and wrote, "The last thing Turkey wants at a time like this is to look after state guests. Please send relief staff only." Citing sources in Pakistan's foreign ministry,  Express News  reported that Sharif's visit has been postponed due to bad weather and the Turkish leadership's engagements related to the ongoing rehabilitation efforts. It added that Pakistan's premiere would not be able to visit the affected areas as the helicopter could not fly during bad weather. Also, it noted that president Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his vice president are also engaged in relief activities.

Criticism in Pakistan

It is worth mentioning Pakistan has been facing the worst-ever economic crisis and terrorism, with inflation reaching a record high and the country witnessing major blasts in the past six months. As per Pakistani media reports, PM Sharif had scheduled to address an All-Party Conference (APC) in order to discuss the ongoing situation. However, he has postponed the meeting twice and announced to visit the devastated nation. It sent air contingents on February 6 night to carry out relief operations in Turkey. This prompted the citizens to criticise his step as the country is already facing a series of pressing issues in its own country.

Pm shehbaz to leave for two-day official tour of turkiye on friday.

pm shahbaz sharif turkey visit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accepted Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s invitation for a two-day official visit starting Friday (Nov 25 ), the Foreign Office (FO) announced on Thursday.

According to the FO’s press release , the premier will “jointly inaugurate the third of the four Milgem Corvette ships for the Pakistan Navy, PNS Khaibar, at the Istanbul Shipyard”.

PM Shehbaz will “interact with leaders of the Turkish business community” and also meet the President of the ECO Trade and Development Bank during his stay in the country’s urban centre, Istanbul.

Shehbaz and Erdogan will hold wide-ranging discussions on “bilateral relations, the regional situation and other issues of common interest”, the FO said.

The FO added that the two countries “enjoy fraternal ties deeply embedded in commonalities of faith, culture, and history and underpinned by exceptional cordiality and mutual trust”.

The Milgem project — based on a joint collaboration between Turkiye and Pakistan — was signed with ASFAT inc, a Turkish state-owned Defence contractor firm in 2018, according to which the Pakistan navy would acquire four Milgem-class ships from Turkey.

Milgem vessels are 99 metres long, have a displacement capacity of 2,400 tons and have a speed of 29 nautical miles.

These anti-submarine combat frigates, which can be hidden from the radar, would further enhance the defence capability of the Pakistan Navy.

The launching ceremony for the first Corvette for the Pakistan Navy, PNS Babur, was performed in Istanbul in August 2021 while the groundbreaking for the second ship, PNS Badr, was held in Karachi in May 2022, the FO said.

It added that the project “represents a significant milestone in the Pakistan-Turkiye strategic partnership that continues to progress on an upward trajectory”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif earlier visited Turkiye in May-June 2022, the press release said.

The FO termed the frequent leadership-level exchanges to be a “defining feature of the eternal bonds of Pakistan-Turkiye friendship.”

Federal Government also offered two plots to Saudi Arabia for hotels in key locations of Islamabad. The Petroleum Division, sources said, has finalized draft of a new policy framework to facilitate investment from Saudi Arabia’s energy giant M/s Aramco, which has now shown interest in establishment of petrochemical refinery instead of oil refinery, as a joint venture with China’s Sinopec Dr. Majid Al-Kassabi, Saudi Commerce Minister, underscored the importance of strengthening business and trade relations between the two countries. He offered his Ministry’s support for connecting Pakistani businesses with the right Saudi partners to encourage frequent exchange of visits between the private sector companies from both sides. Saudi Commerce Minister held a meeting with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during his recent visit and discussed different avenues of cooperation in the private sector. The sources said, GCC countries including Saudi Arabia want special treatment for investing in Pakistan at the B2B level instead of trade. Government has already shown its consent to amendment of Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) as per the proposals of GCC countries. Prime Minister Sharif while addressing the World Economic Forum said that Pakistan’s debt trap has become a “death trap” but that the incumbent government will use all its energies to come out of this mess.—MUSHTAQ GHUMMAN
