» MORE: The best car insurance companies

In our auto insurance reviews, our editorial team considers both the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Financial strength. We use A.M. Best ratings to confirm an insurer’s long-term financial stability and ability to pay claims. NerdWallet does not recommend companies with a rating lower than a B.

Complaints. These ratings are based on complaints to state regulators relative to a company’s size, according to three years’ worth of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. The best auto insurance companies have fewer than the expected number of complaints.

Ease of use. This category looks at how easily consumers can interact with an insurer through its mobile app and website. This includes how much coverage information is offered online, whether a user can start and track a claim online and get a quote and mobile app scores based on the Apple and Google Play store ratings.

Discounts. We look at both the kind of discounts a company offers and the total number of discounts available.

  • How much does Travelers car insurance cost?

Travelers car insurance costs $1,681 per year on average for full coverage insurance . That is almost $300 a year less than the average national annual rate of $1,982. Travelers’ rates are cheaper than most other companies we analyzed rates for, with only American Family , State Farm and USAA offering cheaper annual full coverage rates. Although USAA has cheaper rates on average than State Farm, it sells only to former and active military members and their families.

These rates are for a 35-year-old driver with a clean driving history and good credit with full coverage insurance. Our full coverage rates include liability, comprehensive, collision and any additional insurance a state requires a driver to have. These rates are averages, and your own price will depend on your driving history, car make and model, location and other factors.

For more information on Travelers car insurance rates, including rates after an at-fault accident or DUI, check out the drop down below.

If you’re looking for the cheapest auto insurance rates possible, you may want to buy the minimum car insurance needed to drive in your state. Read our cheap car insurance article to see average minimum car insurance rates by company and state.

  • How Traveler's rates compare

Your car insurance rate is determined by a variety of factors, including your driving record and credit history in most states. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan don’t allow insurers to use credit when determining car insurance rates.

Here are Travelers’ average annual auto insurance rates compared to 2024 national averages for full coverage insurance and four driving profiles.

  • Travelers auto insurance coverage

When you're shopping for car insurance coverage, it's important to understand what car insurance coverage you want and what you’re required to buy. For instance, most states require a minimum amount of car insurance to drive a vehicle. Alternatively, if you want extra protection, you may be interested in full coverage insurance. Read about the most common types of car insurance coverage to see how they work.

Beyond the standard coverage, Travelers offers additional auto insurance options:

Gap insurance protects your auto lease or loan. If your car is totaled before it’s paid off or the lease is up, Travelers pays the difference between your loan’s balance and the car’s value when it’s totaled.

Rideshare insurance is available in Illinois and Colorado for people who drive for companies like Uber or Lyft. Rideshare insurance covers you from the moment you turn on the rideshare app up until you pick up a passenger, then your rideshare company’s insurance is in effect.

Premier New Car Replacement can benefit you if your car is totaled and is 5 years old or newer. This coverage pays to replace the car with a new one, once you pay any applicable deductibles, plus includes gap insurance to pay off any loan or lease balance when the car is totaled. If your car’s glass needs to be repaired, enrolling in this program means you could have a lower deductible.

Responsible Driver Plan forgives one accident and one minor violation over a specified period, so your rates won’t go up after a crash or ticket.

The Premier Responsible Driver Plan includes the above accident and violation forgiveness perks, as well as a decreasing deductible ($50 off for every six months accident-free, up to $500 off your deductible). If your car is totaled, your deductible is waived in this program.

Travelers also offers non-owner car insurance , which provides liability coverage for drivers who don’t own a car, but still regularly drive.

  • Methodology

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2021-2023. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Auto insurance ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s auto insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints and discounts. Our “ease of use” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. Using our editorial discretion, we also consider customer satisfaction surveys. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines and full ratings methodology for auto insurance .

2024 auto insurance survey methodology

The opt-in survey of 7,514 adults age 18 and older was conducted online by Russell Research on behalf of NerdWallet in June and July 2023. Respondents were asked to rate one auto insurance brand they obtained or renewed a policy with within the past 12 months. These brands were rated on overall satisfaction, overall value, online experience, trustworthiness, mobile app experience, claims experience and customer support on a scale of 1-100.

Only brands with 100 or more qualifying respondents are reported. Of those respondents: 301 were State Farm customers, 300 were Progressive customers, 300 were Allstate customers, 300 were Geico customers, 140 were USAA customers, 125 were AAA customers, 105 were Liberty Mutual customers, 103 were American Family customers, 104 were Farmers customers, 104 were Travelers customers and 104 were Nationwide customers.

Average rates methodology

NerdWallet averaged rates based on public filings obtained by pricing analytics company Quadrant Information Services. We examined rates for men and women for all ZIP codes in any of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. Although it’s one of the largest insurers in the country, Liberty Mutual is not included in our rates analysis due to a lack of publicly available information.

In our analysis, “good drivers” had no moving violations on record; a “good driving” discount was included for this profile. Our “good” and “poor” credit rates are based on credit score approximations and do not account for proprietary scoring criteria used by insurance providers.

These are average rates, and your rate will vary based on your personal details, state and insurance provider.

Sample drivers had the following coverage limits:

$100,000 bodily injury liability coverage per person.

$300,000 bodily injury liability coverage per crash.

$50,000 property damage liability coverage per crash.

$100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per person.

$300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage per crash.

Collision coverage with $1,000 deductible.Comprehensive coverage with $1,000 deductible.

We used the same assumptions for all other driver profiles, with the following exceptions:

We changed the credit tier from “good” to “poor” as reported to the insurer to see rates for drivers with poor credit. In states where credit isn’t taken into account, we only used rates for “good credit.”

For drivers with one at-fault crash, we added a single at-fault crash costing $10,000 in property damage.

For drivers with a DUI, we added a single drunken-driving violation.

We used a 2020 Toyota Camry L in all cases and assumed 12,000 annual miles driven. We analyzed rates for drivers of the following ages: 20, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60 and 70.

Travelers Guilty of Bad Faith and Loses $27 Million Verdict Over Smoke, Soot, and Ash Dispute

travellers insurance birmingham

A builders risk claim denied by Travelers insurance company following a September 2018 fire in Birmingham, Alabama, resulted in a verdict totaling over $27 million last week. 1 The case scenario is not that different from many smoke, soot, and ash claims. The insurance company took months to investigate the claim and hired its typical set of experts who claimed that most of the smoke particulates were not present, did not cause physical damage, and that Travelers policyholder suffering the fire claim was exaggerating the loss. The only slight difference was an ongoing water loss caused from holes allegedly caused by the fire allowing rainwater to permeate the building. Travelers claimed that the policyholder failed to mitigate those water losses, but it lost that argument as well.

In one of the most unique and crazy arguments made, Travelers argued that fire caused-smoke, soot, and ash particulates are the same as Covid-19 substances and not covered. Here is the trial argument that Travelers made:

As a matter of law, the presence of combustion byproducts that can be detected only at a microscopic level does not constitute ‘direct physical loss of or damage to property’ under controlling Eighth Circuit law. In Olmsted Medical Center v. Continental Casualty Co. , 65 F.4 th 1005 (8th Cir. 2023) (applying Minnesota law), the Eighth Circuit recently held, consistent with overwhelming law across the country, that the presence of the COVID-19 virus in the air or on a surface at an insured premises does not constitute ‘direct physical loss of or damage to property’ under a property insurance policy. Id. at 1010. In reaching this result, the Eighth Circuit conclude that ‘direct physical loss or damage to property’ requires: (1) a ‘physical effect on property’ that cannot ‘be eliminated by ‘routine cleaning procedures’ and disinfectant’; and (2) a ‘danger … to human health’ does not constitute ‘direct physical loss of or damage to property.’     … Maxus’ claim for remediation of Phases 1-4 of the Metropolitan thus depends entirely on testimony of microscopists that a substance consistent with soot or char was detected under a microscope in certain test results. There has been no evidence presented, however, that the claimed presence of these merely microscopic levels of soot or char, invisible to the human eye, have a ‘physical effect on property,’ as required to trigger coverage. This is analogous to how the presence of an invisible virus on a surface does not have a ‘physical effect on property’ as a matter of law. Olmsted Medical Center, 65 F.4th at 1010. Health risks are not direct physical loss of or damage to property under Olmsted Medical Center, and there was also no evidence presented that microscopic soot would grow over time or would present any kind of long term or permanent problem for the walls or other building components.

Obviously, the jury disagreed.

The hundreds of litigated fire claims involving smoke, soot, and ash that I have been involved with, generally concern the following issues:

  • How do you clean and remove these items?
  • Can these items be cleaned or removed from contents?
  • Were the particulates from complained of fire?
  • Are there enough particulates so that damage has occurred?

Item number three may seem odd, but the issue comes up because of pre-existing smoke particulates from prior fires, fireplaces, smoking, and in one case, my client burned trash adjacent to his business.

How Long Should Commercial Insurers Get To Investigate A Fire Loss?

One of the pre-trial motions involved the common problem of insurance companies dragging out investigations for months without making a decision. If an insurance company is in the commercial fire business, it needs to get its adjustment work done in days rather than months. The policyholder’s pre-trial motion stated the following:

After the September 28, 2018 fire, for several months after being informed by Maxus of Maxus’ concerns about the soot and other combustion byproducts it had determined were a potential health hazard to tenants of the Metropolitan, constituting property damage that required remediation, Travelers failed and refused to take a position on coverage for such combustion byproducts. Later, Travelers effectively denied coverage for this loss as to Phases 1-4 of the Metropolitan, but failed to provide a coverage determination or other explanation of its denial. To the extent any combustion byproduct is determined to have been present in Phases 1 through 4, constituting property damage, Travelers cannot be allowed, in hindsight, after denying coverage and refusing to participate in any remediation plans, to dispute any particular measure taken by Maxus to clean up the property and protect itself and its tenants from potential harm. It is anticipated that Travelers may unjustly take issue with the actions Maxus took post-denial with regard to remediation efforts. Maxus does not dispute that Travelers can attempt to show certain amounts were not actually paid by Maxus for remediation or perhaps that an individual charge was objectively unreasonable (which Maxus disputes), but Travelers should be prohibited from eliciting testimony, presenting evidence, or making arguments regarding the reasonableness and appropriateness of Maxus’ remediation plan and efforts in general, as Travelers denied coverage, refused to participate in the plan, and even failed to timely comment on such plan before it was put into action. In other words, Travelers cannot refuse to comment on the remediation plan for months, tell Maxus to act solely at its own risk, rely on its own experts, and then be allowed to second-guess such plan at trial.

Juxtapose the scenario successfully proven by the Travelers policyholder with what Travelers promises on its website to businesses it agrees to cover:

Fair, Fast & Effective Services Travelers provides customized protection for all customers based on exposures they may face every day.  Our industry expertise, along with a deep understanding of business needs, helps ensure we deliver service plans designed specifically for our customers. – Valuable service offerings that increase ease of doing business – Tailored solutions for unique exposures – Potential cost savings associated with integrated value-added services – In-depth analysis of exposures, losses and trends to support informed decision-making about business operations – Minimized business disruption due to timely, accurate claim resolution Since 1853, we’ve been helping businesses prepare for, mitigate, and recover from losses. It’s our business to help keep you in business.

There will certainly be post-trial motions. Cases after verdict are not over until settlement or the last appeal. But there are many lessons to be learned from this fire loss with the normally occurring “smoke, soot, and ash” residue, which I will report on as I read more of the docket.

The crazy part of this case is that Travelers has been paying for these items of damage since 1853. Now, with new arguments about Covid-19 not being considered a “physical loss,” creative property claims managers are trying to get out of paying for damages that have traditionally been covered with no fuss.

Business Insider conducted a travel insurance survey of 971 US adults in December 2023 through Momentive AI Audience.

  • It found that most travelers who bought travel insurance were concerned about their travel provider or their health.
  • The survey also uncovered that most travelers would be willing to pay for insurance in the future.
  • Compare the best travel insurance companies .

About 80% of those surveyed traveled for non-business reasons in the past year. Those travelers were most likely to travel internationally, by airplane (24%), or across state lines, by car (24%) or by airplane (18%). About 15% of respondents had traveled within their own state, by car. Of travelers surveyed, most (56%) paid $1,000 or less for their trip, while the vast majority (77%) paid $2,000 or less for their trip.

Among those travelers:

  • The largest group of insured travelers (35%) bought insurance primarily because they feared issues like delayed flights or moved reservations, while about 29% were worried about a health emergency
  • When researching travel insurance options, many buyers (28%) used suggestions and recommendations from family and friends
  • The majority of insured travelers (55%) purchased their policy through a travel provider
  • Of travelers who did not purchase insurance, 35% said their primary reason was because they'd never needed it on previous travels, and 19% said they didn't think their trip was expensive enough to insure
  • Most people surveyed (68%) say they would be willing to pay some amount for travel insurance in the future

Why people buy travel insurance

Roughly 38% of surveyed travelers purchased insurance for their trip. About 13% of overall respondents purchased cancellation insurance, and 11% purchased cancel for any reason insurance (CFAR) . Another 14% said they purchased travel insurance, but were unsure what kind. The average cost of travel insurance varies by trip cost, destination, and age, but typically falls between $80 and $160 for a $2,000 trip.

The largest group of travelers (35%) who bought insurance did so primarily because they were concerned about the travel provider they booked with, and feared issues like delayed flights or moved reservations. About 29% were worried about having a potential health issue, and about 18% found the value or overall price to be appealing. About 11% said they always buy travel insurance out of habit, and just 5% said a friend had recommended it.

However, the largest percentage (28%) of travelers who purchased insurance researched their options by asking a friend or family member, followed by a review site, blog, or social media influencer (24%). Another 22% of respondents researched their options through a travel agent, and about 19% said they didn't do research at all.

Where travelers purchase their policies

The majority of insured travelers (55%) purchased a policy through a travel provider such as a booking engine like Expedia, or through an airline, a cruise provider, a tour group, or similar. The next most common place to purchase insurance was a travel agent (17%), followed by an insurance marketplace (13%).

Of those who responded to the survey, about 18% had purchased travel insurance and made a claim, while 24% had not made a claim on their coverage. Of those who made a claim, about half were satisfied with the outcome, and half were not.

When asked if they use any travel insurance features from their credit card — like trip delay coverage, baggage delay coverage, or rental car coverage — 33% of overall respondents said they did. However, more than a third of respondents whose credit cards carry these features said they still purchased separate travel insurance. Another 33% didn't know whether their cards come with this type of coverage.

Many travelers still don't see the need for insurance

About 62% of travelers surveyed did not purchase travel insurance; of those travelers, 35% said their primary reason to forgo insurance was because they'd traveled before and never needed it. About 19% said they didn't think their trip was expensive enough for insurance, and about 14% said they were trying to save money. About 13% said travel insurance never occurred to them. Only about 5% said they get travel insurance elsewhere, like through a credit card.

Travelers whose trips went as planned were largely happy with their decision not to purchase travel insurance: Over 70% said they didn't regret their decision to pass on a policy because nothing went wrong on their trip. Another 24% said they don't regret their choice simply because they never thought about travel insurance. About 6% of respondents felt differently: Nearly 4% wish they had purchased insurance because it would have given them peace of mind, and 2% regret their choice because something went wrong on their trip.

Most travelers would be willing to pay for insurance in the future

This holiday season, thousands of travelers experienced cancellations and delays and were even stranded at airports when Southwest airlines canceled 60% of its flying schedule , leaving travelers with little recourse.

About 68% of travelers surveyed by Insider — both those who had and hadn't purchased travel insurance in the past year — said they'd be willing to pay for travel insurance in the future to protect a weeklong, non-business trip. Most (49%) were willing to pay up to $150 for coverage, and some (13%) were willing to pay up to $250. Only about 5% were willing to pay more than $250, and about 32% were not willing to pay at all.

As we continue to see travel delays and disruptions, travel insurance will become more important and will be viewed as a necessity and not just an expense. The cost of travel insurance is small relative to the trip costs you can protect.
