About Wiz Khalifa:

Multi-platinum selling, GRAMMY and Golden Globe nominated recording artist Wiz Khalifa burst onto the scene with the release of his first major label debut album, ROLLING PAPERS‎ in 2011. ‎ROLLING PAPERS spawned the hugely successful hits “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” and “No Sleep” and gave Wiz the platform to win the award for “Best New Artist” at the 2011 BET Awards and “Top New Artist” at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. “Black and Yellow” also earned him his first two GRAMMY nods for “Best Rap Performance” and “Best Rap Song”. As a follow up to ROLLING PAPERS, Wiz Released O.N.I.F.C. in 2012. This album featured tracks “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You” featuring The Weeknd. His third studio album released in 2014, BLACC HOLLYWOOD, ‎debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart and included the hit single “We DemBoyz.” Soon after, Wiz’s track,‎ “See You Again,” off the FURIOUS 7 soundtrack, catapulted to the top of the charts across 95 countries and earned him a Golden Globes nomination for “Best Original Song”. In February 2018, Wiz partnered with Sovereign Brands to create McQueen and the Violet Fog, an Award winning gin and rated by the NY Times as the “Best Gin”.. In July 2022, Wiz released his full-length solo album MULTIVERSE, to rave reviews, as well as MULTIVERSE (DELUXE) which included three additional tracks, “We Can Get More”, “Funkin”, and “Lost”. This spring, Wiz will star as George Clinton in the upcoming motion picture, Spinning Gold, to be released in theaters on March 31, 2023.

About Too $hort:

Todd “Too $hort” Shaw is a multiplatinum hip-hop artist, songwriter and entrepreneur that hails from Oakland, California. Over the course of his illustrious career as an artist, $hort has cemented his legacy as a hip-hop heavyweight and pioneer of West Coast rap, having amassed six platinum albums and four gold certifications with smash songs like  “Blow the Whistle,”   “Shake That Monkey,”   “The Ghetto,” “Gettin It”  and more. With the release of his 22 nd  solo studio album ( Ain’t Gone Do It)  in December 2020, $hort earned the unique distinction of becoming the only active hip-hop artist to have released an album in five different decades, punctuating an already vast catalog that included acclaimed albums such as  Life Is… Too Short, Short Dog’s in the House, Shorty the Pimp, Get In Where You Fit In, Cocktails, Gettin’ It (Album Number Ten), etc.  He is also the only artist to have collaborated with Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G. and JAY-Z.

About Warren G:

The cultural influence of groundbreaking American rapper, record producer, media personality, philanthropist, and entrepreneur WARREN G (born Warren Griffin III) remains as urgent today as his 1994, multi-platinum-selling smash “Regulate.” Recorded with childhood friend and iconic superstar Nate Dogg, the track would define the rap genre and a generation. For three decades, Griffin has sold eight to ten million records worldwide. Today, he is crafting a new narrative, by extending his reach into the culinary arts, inspired by his family history.

As a solo artist, Griffin signed to Def Jam Records, collaborating with such artists as MC Breed and 2Pac. His early career breakthrough was achieved in 1992 when his vocal collaboration with Mista Grimm on the track “Indo Smoke,” which appeared on the Poetic Justice soundtrack. His creative momentum continued with significant contributions to Dr. Dre’s iconic 1992 debut album, The Chronic, including sampling for “Nuthin’ but a G-Thang,” a track that would be distinguished by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” In 2019, Griffin found inspiration from his family history, this time in the culinary arts, by launching Sniffin Griffins BBQ sauces and rubs. As the artist reaches 50, his achievements in crafting music to reflect the sound and poetry of a generation are without compare. Now, Griffin has emerged as the “hip hop pit master,” eager to share a lifestyle that personifies joy, family, and celebration.

Concert Review: Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa at OVO Fest

13839929_10155071656474867_420986079_o

It finally happened.  It’s been no secret (based on some album reviews I’ve written ) that I am not the biggest Drake fan, yet here I am attending one of his OVO events for the first time.  This came about at the last minute, as some homies encountered some cheap tickets for day one of the festival, which was being headlined by cultural icon Snoop Dogg along with Wiz Khalifa.  While there aren’t many artists on the bill that I’m a huge fan of, Snoop is one of those all-time greats that Hip-Hop heads should see at least once in their lifetime.

Drake has worked hard in promoting Toronto as a favoured tourist destination, and his annual OVO Festival plays a big part in his contributions to the city.  The festival typically takes place during Caribana weekend, with a major act (like OutKast or J. Cole in previous years) headlining the first night, and Drake himself headlining the second night with several surprise guests.  This year the festival has expanded over the entire long weekend, reaching multiple venues with Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa co-headlining day one at Molson Amphitheatre, reggae star Machel Montano headlining day two at Echo Beach, and Drake & Future co-headlining back to back nights at the Air Canada Centre.

I actually had an opportunity to see Snoop Dogg perform his entire Doggystyle album at the 2010 Rock The Bells Festival in New York, but foolishly decided to leave early, and so this would finally be my first time seeing him perform live.  Snoop and Wiz Khalifa are out headlining The High Road Tour , which also includes performances by Kevin Gates, Jhene Aiko, and Casey Veggies.  With the exception of Ms. Aiko, this would be my first time seeing all of them perform live.

IMG_20160729_1925178

Shortly after my crew got to the venue, paid for some ridiculously overpriced beer and found our seats, Casey Veggies came out as the first opener.  I don’t really know much about him other than he was part of the Odd Future crew, but decided to go solo before Tyler The Creator, Earl Sweatshirt and Frank Ocean really blew the group up.  I didn’t know any of his songs, but he had good energy and the crowd (which wasn’t at full capacity yet) turned up for him.

IMG_20160729_2005278

Next was the beautiful and talented Jhene Aiko, who had a live band rocking with her.  I had previously seen her perform at her very first show in Toronto, which was at the 2013 Manifesto Festival in Dundas Square , where she opened for Souls of Mischief.  She’s come a long way since then, releasing critically acclaimed albums and being nominated for Grammy awards.  She performed both old songs like “Higher” and “Bed Peace,” as well as some newer songs off her collaborative  Twenty88 album with Big Sean.  She could have the crowd turned up with a hype track like “Post To Be” or mellowed out to smooth hits like “The Worst.”  Overall it was a dope set with good vibes, as that sweet voice reminded the crowd to stay high and hydrated on this hot sunny day before leaving.

Taking Jhene’s advice, I went to go get another drink after her set.  I returned to some wack trap-rap going on on stage, and angry fans yelling “fuck you!” whenever the rapper tried to engage the crowd.  Apparently Kevin Gates couldn’t make it across the Canadian border, so they got someone else to do covers of his songs for about ten minutes.  I wasn’t sure whether to be glad or upset; I had only ever heard Kevin Gates rap once and he drew zero interest from me.  On a positive note, the bullshit only lasted a few minutes, and Snoop Dogg came out on stage at 9 o’clock sharp.

IMG_20160729_2125138

Snoop wasted no time getting the party rocking again, coming out to his classic Dr. Dre collaborations: “The Next Episode,” “Nuthin’ But A G Thang” and “Bitch Please.” After rocking the first three songs, he went backstage and Wiz Khalifa came out to do a few on his own.  Wiz is one of those rappers I’ve always found boring, with simple rhymes and mediocre flows, and so I don’t really know much of his music other than some obvious hits.  Out of his first few, I only recognized the “We The North” song the Toronto Raptors usually play during their pre-game warmups.  Just kidding, I know it’s called “We Dem Boyz,” haha.

IMG_20160729_2125489

Snoop and Wiz took turns going through their hits.  Snoop came out and performed “I Wanna Rock,” then Wiz would do a couple songs, then Snoop came back with three more.  When Snoop came back out, he was atop the back balcony of the stage, where he performed his verse from “All I Do Is Win” before going back to the 1990’s with “Gin and Juice” and “2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted.”  Wiz then came back with some more of his songs, including a throwback “Ink My Whole Body”, where he showed off his tattoos.

Next was a short break for an animated video of Snoop & Wiz driving around looking for weed.  When they reappeared, they were among the crowd wayyyy up between the 400-level and the lawn section.  They performed a couple songs up there, really engaging the people sitting far back before another video break gave them time to get back down to the stage.  Snoop made a comment that he wanted to “hear some gang shit,” so then Wiz brought out his Taylor Gang and they performed some of their songs.  There was also a surprise appearance from Ty Dolla $ign, who I am not a fan of at all , so I took the time to get more drinks.

When Snoop got back to performing, he did some of his more modern hits from the most recent decade of his lengthy career, including “I Wanna Fuck You” and “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”  He also did one more classic Doggystyle throwback with “Who Am I,” getting everyone to sing his name and chant along with him.  By this point there were large inflated balloons shaped like blunts being tossed around the crowd on the floor level, and the smell of weed was prominent.

Wiz Khalifa followed up with some of his most recognizable hits, including “Black & Yellow” and the Furious 7 smash “See You Again”, getting everyone to light up their phones and lighters during the latter emotional track.  Snoop and Wiz then ended the show with some of their collaborative tracks including “No Social Media”, and got everyone to sing along to “Young, Wild & Free.”

Overall this was a fun show, although the obvious unfamiliarity and lack of preparation on my part made it a challenge to vibe with all the songs.  I noticed some of the older folks in the crowd took a seat whenever Wiz Khalifa took over the stage, and only got up for Snoop Dogg.  Otherwise, the crowd was mostly young people turning up and the energy was great.  Say what you will about the musical experimentations Snoop has done over the years, but he still has his mic mastery on full display whenever he spits a verse, and he knows how to keep a crowd engaged.  That’s another legend scratched off the bucket list.

Drake was nowhere to be seen during day one of the OVO Festival, although there was an OVO pop up shop with merch for sale at the Molson Amphitheatre.  It might also be worth noting there’s now a Pokemon Go gym around the vendor area too.  While previous years had the entire festival at this venue, OVO is moving on with a reggae/soca show at Echo Beach on Saturday, and Drake & Future hosting back to back nights at the Air Canada Centre on Sunday and Monday.

Snoop Dogg at Big Game Weekend, wearing a Black hooded sweatshirt.; Too $hort at NAACP Image Awards, wearing a Black varsity jacket, Black shirt, and Black pants. ; Wiz Khalifa at New Year's Rockin Eve, wearing a colorful sweatsuit and Black cap.

The summer is going to get a few degrees hotter in July when the High School Reunion Tour kicks off. Snoop Dogg , Too $hort , Wiz Khalifa , and more will be hitting the road as part of the tour’s featured acts.

Live Nation announced the tour on Monday (March 6), revealing the aforementioned talents, plus Warren G , Berner , and DJ Drama . The 33-show tour begins on July 7 in Vancouver, British Columbia and then they make stops in Washington, Denver, Toronto, and Brooklyn before concluding in Irvine, Calif. on August 27.

I’m hittin the road on the High School Reunion Tour with @SnoopDogg , @TooShort , @regulator , @Berner415 , and Special Guest @DJDrama ! Tickets on sale March 10th at 9am Local. This is another addition to what is shaping up to be a busy year for the “Drop It Like It’s Hot” rapper. DJ Pooh recently revealed that The Wash , the 2001 film which starred Snoop and Dr. Dre , will be revived and made into a television series. There’s currently no set premiere date, but given the way the Long Beach, Calif. artist works, it would not be shocking if the series began before 2023 comes to a close.

Uncle Snoop also has an album coming this year titled Missionary , which will be released in collaboration with Dre in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Doggystyle . After blasting the GRAMMYs for snubbing him throughout his career, one can expect that the “Sensual Seduction” artist will have a huge chip on his shoulder and overdeliver on his forthcoming LP.
