My family of nine booked an ATV sunset trip through this company, and it turned out to be a fantastic experience. We were warmly greeted by their staff, who also provided us with drinking water. Best Sunrise Spots In Cappadocia

Let’s start with the best sunrise spots in Cappadocia. I’ve specifically picked spots that are facing east, so you can get views of the sun rising above the horizon and slowly illuminating the valley.

These spots are also great for watching the hot air balloons, which almost always take place during sunrise.

On A Hot Air Balloon Ride

There is simply no better place to see the sunrise in Cappadocia than on one of its legendary hot air balloon rides . On a hot air balloon, visitors can get a bird’s eye view of the epic landscape of Cappadocia.

As you float through the sky, the sun slowly rises from the horizon, illuminating the fairy chimneys that have made this region so iconic.

Some of the fairy chimneys can be as tall as 30 meters, and seeing the scale of them from the sky is truly unforgettable. Not only is it one of the best sunrises you’ll ever get in your life, but the experience itself is unworldly. It’s certainly an unmissable experience to add to your Cappadocia itinerary .

There are many companies that offer hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia and it is important to do your research to find a reputable one.

Love Valley

Perhaps the most famous sunrise spot in Cappadocia is Love Valley, a place in Cappadocia that has earned its iconic name due to its phallic fairy chimneys. These fairy chimneys are perhaps some of the most prominent in the region, and visitors that come here for sunrise have a unique foreground for their photos.

When visiting Love Valley for sunrise, you don’t want to go into the valley, because you’ll be surrounded by cliffs on both sides and not see anything. There’s a ridge immediately to the west of Love Valley, where you can find the iconic Love Valley swing and a few restaurants. This is the perfect place to watch the sunrise, especially while sipping on a delicious cup of Turkish tea (çay).

Visitors can also see the hot air balloons here at sunrise, but since there is no balloon take-off area near here, they’ll be quite far. A few do float all the way down to Love Valley to see its iconic fairy chimneys from above, but don’t expect a lot of them.

The Love Valley sunrise viewpoint is about 4.8 km (3 mi) away from Goreme. Walking there takes a little over an hour, which is why we recommend taking a taxi or hiring your own car. Visitors might have difficulty finding taxis before sunrise, so renting a car in Cappadocia is your best bet. It is only a 10-minute drive from Goreme.

Hidden Sunrise Spot

Because you have stopped by our blog, we want to share with you one of our favorite sunrise spots that is not anywhere on the map. If you want a secluded spot that is not too far from Goreme where you can take excellent photos and spend quality time with your friends or loved ones, this is the spot for you.

This sunrise spot overlooks the epic canyon that is just north of Goreme, the exact spot where the sun rises in the morning. This spot is also relatively close to the balloon take-off area, and if you have good eyes, you can see the whole process!

The downside to this spot is that you are going to be sitting on the grass. We personally don’t think it’s too bad, but you might want to go to another viewpoint if you want to be super comfortable.

This hidden sunrise spot is situated about a 15-minute walk from town, which means you can sleep more in the morning before having to wake up and hike to the spot. You can also drive there, but it is going to be a 5-minute drive, hardly worth it.

No trip to Cappadocia is complete without taking an epic hot air balloon flight at sunrise!

Make sure you reserve your tour well in advance to avoid missing out or paying any additional fees last minute!

On One of The Hotel’s Terraces

If you don’t like getting up early in the morning and going through the valleys of Cappadocia just to catch the sunrise, worry not. The cave hotels in Cappadocia know that getting up early isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, so many of them have built terraces and areas where guests can admire the sunrise without taking off their pajamas.

One of our favorite hotels with a view in Cappadocia is Luvi Cave Hotel . They have a terrace that is decorated with traditional Turkish carpets and cushions, making it look like a scene from a movie. Not only is it comfortable, but it also offers the perfect Instagram-photo opportunity for guests.

The hot air balloons hover over the town of Goreme, and it is a great sunrise spot to see the balloons up close.

The only downside is that the terrace of a hotel isn’t very private, which means you might share it with a few other guests. The view from the hotel might also not be the best, and will largely depend on the direction it faces.

But without having to prepare to go outside, it is definitely a spot worth considering.

Best Sunset Spots In Cappadocia

The best sunset spots in Cappadocia are the ones that face west and are easy to get to. Unlike the sunrise spots that are more quiet and secluded, the sunset spots in Cappadocia are usually quite crowded. But nonetheless, they offer some of the best views of the region.

Goreme Sunset Viewpoint (Lover’s Hill)

Perhaps the most famous sunset location in Cappadocia is Goreme Sunset Viewpoint, also known as Lover’s Hill Viewpoint, or Asiklar Tepesi in Turkish. The sunset point is situated about 30 meters above Goreme town, offering visitors nearly a 360-degree view of the Cappadocia region.

There is a platform built on top of the rock formations where visitors can take photos with the Goreme historic town as the backdrop. There is also usually a horse at the top where you can take photos with it, for a fee of course. 

You can have a light snack or a drink at one of the restaurants on the hill, but it is quite windy so it makes eating and drinking quite difficult.

During sunset, the sun sets behind Uchisar Castle, and creates a really cool silhouette of this Turkey landmark . On the other side of the Goreme Sunset Viewpoint, you can see Zemi Valley, one of the easiest hikes in Cappadocia .

Because it is situated only a 15-minute walk from Goreme, this viewpoint is one of the most crowded places to visit in Cappadocia , especially during sunset. You’ll find you may need to queue up behind other tourists to capture a photo form the viewing platform there, but if you wander along the ridge a little bit there is usually a free space to stand.

There is a small fee to enter if you are coming from Goreme, but you can go through Zemi Valley and avoid the fee. 

Be prepared for the wind! We found the wind was incredibly strong up there since there is no shelter from the valley. Wrap up warm, and ladies, bring a hair tie.

Uchisar Castle

As the highest point in Cappadocia, Uchisar Castle is arguably the best place to watch the sunset in Cappadocia. The castle is perched over an epic rock formation in the town of Uchisar and looms over all the traditional houses in town.

Naturally, the height of Uchisar Castle made it one of the most important fortifications in Cappadocia during both the Byzantine and Ottoman rule. Houses (and eventually a town) were built around it, and anytime there were threats from the invaders, the villagers could easily enter the castle for protection.

The Uchisar Castle takes a few hundred steps to reach the top, but you are rewarded with stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the region. From there, not only can you see Goreme, but the valleys that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Goreme National Park . 

The only challenge is the opening hours of Uchisar Castle. In the summer, it is open until 9 PM, but during the winter , it can close as early as 6:30 PM, which means visitors might just miss the sunset depending on which season they are visiting Cappadocia.

Uchisar Castle is located 5 km (3.1 mi) from Goreme. Visitors can take a taxi or public transportation to get there. There is also the option of hiking through the trails of Pigeon Valley or Love Valley and White Valley to get there.

There is a small entrance fee to Uchisar Castle but it’s worth it for the views from the top.

Red Valley Sunset Viewpoint

The Red Valley Sunset Viewpoint is one of the most popular sunsets spots for those that prefer hiking. Though it is reachable by car, it is often done by hiking through the Red Valley or Rose Valley , as those two valleys showcase some of the coolest rock-cut churches and cave dwellings in the region.

At the Red Valley Viewpoint, not only do people get to see the sun setting behind amazing fairy chimneys and rock formations, but there is a cafe where you can do so while enjoying a Turkish coffee or tea.

There are also plenty of seating areas, as well as a heart-shaped bench to spice up your sunset photos! We found this viewpoint just as the sun was setting, and we loved just sitting on the edge of the ridge and watching the sun cast its glow behind the valley’s rock formations.

If you have decided to get a taxi or drive to the Red Valley Sunset Viewpoint, it’ll take about 15 minutes. It is situated 6.1 km (3.8 mi) from Goreme and 3.6 km (2.2 mi) from Ortahisar. 

If you are hiking back (which is what we did) we recommend you leave just a little before the sun gets too low, as you have to walk down a narrow and slippery path into the valley which wouldn’t be much fun to do in the dark. Once you’re in the valley though, it’s pretty flat.

Who doesn’t like comfort when admiring some spectacular sunset views? Well, you can do that at one of Cappadocia’s terraced restaurants. There are many amazing restaurants in Cappadocia , and some of them offer a rooftop terrace where you can sample delicious Turkish cuisine while checking out some great views.

Perhaps the best one is Millocal Restaurant Kapadokya in Uchisar. It has an outdoor terrace where you can see all the different valleys in Cappadocia and Goreme. Plus, the interior decor of this restaurant is gorgeous and features traditional elements of the Central Anatolia region. 

Just make sure you make a reservation beforehand, especially if you are visiting during the high season in Cappadocia .

Information / Details to Know

Driver of the quad must be over 18 years old.

We have 3 different routes of ATV tours. You can choose the one you like or the one which is close to your hotel.

2 People can ride 1 ATV , additional cost may apply.

This is a group activity with a guide at the front. If you want private tours only for you or rent a quad please inform us.

The best times for quad tours is sunrise and sunset. But if you want less people in the valleys, day times are also good to choose.

Children under 10 years old can not drive at the back of the quad.

ATV tours are organized every day in Cappadocia. You can choose any time for the tour during the day. You will be picked up from the hotel and taken to the tour starting point. On arrival you will receive a safety briefing and information on how to use the ATV. The local guide will accompany you at all times, showing you the path you need to drive.

We will pick you up from your hotel. We will inform you pick up times after the booking.

We will inform you about the quads and give you equipments like helmet, get ready for the tour.

Once we are ready, tours starts.

We will have several stops along the tour, depends on which tour you booked.

When the tour finishes, we will get back to the starting point and take you back to your hotel.

As I visited this best sunset Cappadocia spot at the end of a private organized day tour , we didn’t have to pay the fee to access this viewpoint. If you visit by rental car, there may (or may not be) a local waiting on the road to take a ‘toll’ of sorts. I can’t imagine it’s very much though.

One of the coolest experiences I had on my trip to Turkey was watching the sun go down overlooking Red Valley Cappadocia.

Best Time to Visit Cappadocia Red Valley

Time of year.

Like most of the region, Red Valley Cappadocia Turkey is best visited in the shoulder months of April-May and September-November .

I have also heard that winter in Cappadocia can be really nice, too. So don’t cross a visit to Cappadocia Red Valley off your list if you happen to land in the months of December-March. Just bring warm layers.

Time of Day

I visited Red Valley Cappadocia in November at sunset time. As the sun goes down, the temperature can dip, so make sure to bring a sweater or layers with you.

If you decide to visit the Red Valley Cappadocia sunset point, make sure to arrive early (at least an hour beforehand) as all of the best seats go early. Grab yourself a spot at the cliff’s edge for unobstructed views of the Cappadocia sunset.

If you go at the peak of the day to do a Red Valley hike, come prepared with sunscreen , sun hat and a reusable water bottle .

Red Valley Cappadocia Entrance Fee

If you decide to visit the Panoramic Cafe viewpoint at sunset in Red Valley, there will be a very small fee of 6TL in cash . Simply pay this to the local standing guard on the road heading towards the cafe. The fee is paid per car.

When arriving by taxi, they will likely pay the guard and add it to your bill that you will pay at the end of your ride. A small price to pay for witnessing a stunning sunset over the otherworldly landscapes of Cappadocia.

If you decide to take a Red Valley hike Cappadocia during the daytime the entrance will be free.

What to Expect at the Red Valley Sunset in Cappadocia

Watching the sunset from the panoramic point at Red Valley Cappadocia is a very popular evening attraction . This area includes more than just the Crazy Ali Panoramic Cafe.

Upon entering this area, you will notice a viewing platform on the left before you head to the parking lot. If you choose to settle here, make sure to bring a blanket as there are no chairs available. 

I’d recommend moving on to the end of the parking lot and scoring yourself a seat at the restaurant. Much more comfortable.

Parking at the Red Valley Panoramic Viewpoint

The panoramic area located at Red Valley comes with a large parking area that you pay for when you are charged the small entrance fee on the road leading in. There is no additional fee for parking, specifically. The lot is dirt only, but well-groomed. 

Amenities for Sunset in Red Valley Cappadocia

There is a restroom available for restaurant patrons. Ask the staff at Crazy Ali Panoramic Cafe for the bathroom key. The bathroom is a basic outhouse style washroom a 30-second walk away. Bathrooms are available for 1TL .

The restaurant itself offers beer, wine, juices of local fruit, and snacks . If you decide to indulge in a glass of wine here, it will cost approximately 15TL. 

We ended up buying a bottle of nice red wine from Gulor Wine Cave House on our way to the panoramic viewpoint and opened it there. The staff doesn’t mind as long as you order some food. The plate of local cheeses that the restaurant served us went really well with the wine. Super pleased.

Hiking in Red Valley

Besides watching the sunset at Red Valley, this Cappadocia valley also offers a really beautiful hike. You can find the Red Valley trailhead at this same location . Just head downhill on the dirt path that is located between the restaurant and the viewing platform. 

Remember to take a picture on your phone of the trail map before you descend down the hill so you don’t get lost.

You will find a small cafe for refreshments and snacks at the base of the hill before starting on the trail. Shortly after, you will reach the Uzumlu Church , make sure to take a peek inside!

The Red Valley hiking loop should take you approximately an hour. If you decide to continue on and complete the Rose Valley loop as well, it will take about 3 hours.  Make sure you end your hiking trip back at the panoramic viewpoint and enjoy a perfect Cappadocia sunset before driving back to your Goreme hotel.

Can You Book a Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Sunset Ride?

Taking a sunset hot air balloon Cappadocia ride is really quite rare . During my 10 days in Cappadocia, I didn’t see any hot air balloons flying during sunset. 

After experiencing a hot air balloon ride at sunrise , I can say without hesitation it was the best time to see Cappadocia from a bird’s eye view.

Where to Stay in Cappadocia (Goreme + Uchisar)

All of the recommended Goreme hotels below come with great views of the hot air balloon at sunrise and are centrally located for visiting all of the Cappadocia highlights.

Koza Cave Hotel

Situated with a great view over Goreme town and Pigeon Valley , this luxury Cappadocia hotel features a main terrace , perfect for watching the hot air balloons fly in the morning. 

Koza Cave Hotel rooms come with traditional Turkish rugs and cozy beds with several rooms boasting living rooms with fireplaces , spa baths and private terraces. The hotel has a quality onsite restaurant.

Sultan Cave Suites

MY TOP PICK! Situated on the top of the Goreme town valley, Sultan Cave Suites features a large panoramic terrace , great for morning photoshoots (do note, that a lot of Instagrammers stay here). Most rooms come with a modern en-suite and seating area. 

Sultan Cave Suites has a top-rated restaurant on site called Seten , a great place for date night.

Antique Terrace Suites

Antique Terrace Suites is a mid-range accommodation that features a main sunrise terrace, a great buffet breakfast and cozy cave rooms for an economical price .

Uchisar Hotels in Cappadocia

If you decide to stay in Uchisar instead of Goreme, these wonderful Cappadocia hotels are highly recommended. Both come with views of the hot air balloons at sunrise (albeit a bit further away) and quality rooms.

Museum Hotel

The Museum Hotel is a member of Relais & Chateaux , which means you can expect a very high standard of service and accommodation here. It has a beautiful outdoor pool , a terrace with panoramic views and all the amenities you could possibly need.  

The onsite restaurant offers locally produced fruits and vegetables harvested on-site. Museum Hotel is also pet-friendly!

Rox Cappadocia

Rox Cappadocia is located right next to Uchisar Castle and enjoys panoramic views of Goreme and Pigeon Valley from its terraces. 

Although Rox is not a cave hotel, it comes with stone rooms (which allow for a more economical price) that mimic this feeling and is a great experience.

What to Bring to Red Valley Cappadocia

Many of the valleys of Cappadocia feature dry dirt paths and a lot of sun exposure. It’s important to come prepared with the proper equipment.

My recommendations:

DAY PACK |   Since I spend my days as a full-time travel blogger, I carry my camera wherever I go. SELF CLEANING WATER BOTTLE | Nowadays I don’t go anywhere without a self-cleaning reusable water bottle. It’s great for eliminating plastic and also to get clean drinking water wherever I go. I particularly enjoy my LARQ water bottle because of its easy self-cleaning technology and sleek design.

SUNSCREEN | Sunscreen is a necessity for most Cappadocia attractions since the majority of them are outdoors. I opt for the mineral based reef-safe 50 SPF Sunscreen from SunBum.
