Parga, Greece: a charming and colourful village in Epirus

Parga is a charming seaside resort with colourful houses located on the coast of the Epirus region, in western Greece. Built on a hilltop dominated by a 14th century Norman fortress, Parga has a vibrant atmosphere, excellent food and lush beaches. It is close to many of Greece’s interesting sites, which makes it the perfect place to settle and discover the west coast! In this travel guide, I’ll share with you everything there is to know about this magical destination as well as the best things to see and do in Parga, Greece.

This article contains affiliate links, which allows me to earn a small commission on any purchase you make through my links, at no extra cost to you. It helps me keep this blog running, thanks for understanding!

How to get to Parga, Greece

Parga is close to the airports of Preveza, Corfu and Ioannina. The easiest and fastest option is to land in Preveza, the nearest town (65 km). From Preveza airport, take the shuttle bus to the KTEL bus station in Preveza and then the bus from Preveza to Parga (several departures throughout the day). The journey takes about 2 hours, make sure to check the bus timetable before you leave! Taxis are also available directly from Preveza airport to take you to Parga.

The transportation company KTEL connects all major Greek cities by bus, so you can easily reach Parga from anywhere in Greece.

Getting around Parga

To visit the Epirus region and sites such as Sivota or the theatre of Dodona, the best solution is to rent a car. The platform RentalCars compares and offers the best rates in Greece, I am never disappointed with their service! There are also some KTEL buses and day cruises to discover the other beautiful destinations along the coast.

Parga's Bay

Where to stay in Parga?

Parga is a relatively small resort, so it’s easy to get around on foot wherever you stay. Choose your location according to what you plan to do there: do you plan on going swimming every day at the beach in the centre of Parga? Do you prefer to be on the move and discover a new destination in the area every day? Do you want a relatively quiet location with direct access to the beach? Find a strategic location! Here is a selection of hotels and campsites to guide you:

Hotels in Parga, Greece

Paradise Hotel : located in the centre of Parga, the Paradise Hotel offers a superb view of the village and its bay, in addition to a beautiful swimming pool and impeccable service.

Studios Spiros : very well located at the top of Parga’s centre and budget-friendly.

Hotel Maistrali : located just a few steps from Parga’s main beach, the hotel also offers private parking.

Camping in Parga

Camping Valtos : a simple but well-equipped campsite located less than 100 metres from Valtos beach and 15 minutes walk from the centre of Parga.

The promenade along the coast

Stroll through the narrow streets, discover the tiny Orthodox churches and look for the most beautiful views of Parga!

Church in Parga Greece

Wander through the shops selling handmade leather shoes, soaps, wooden objects and stop at one of Parga’s bakeries to try some delicious local pastries.

Street and shops in Parga

Visit the Castle of Parga

Perched on the hill, the Castle of Parga dominates the city. Originally built in the 14th century by the Normans, the fortress has been through many changes: it was destroyed in 1537 by the Ottomans and then rebuilt a few decades later by the Venetians, before finally being restored by Ali Pasha in the early 19th century.

Castle of Parga

Today, only ruins remain, but one can imagine the history that took place here by walking through the impressive fortifications. The view of the coastline on either side of Parga from the top of the fortress is magnificent.

Beaches in Parga

With its turquoise sea and beautiful pebbles, the coastline along Parga calls for swimming! There are many beaches and coves along the coast, the best known being Krioneri, Piso Krioneri and Valtos, all three located in Parga itself. These can be reached on foot. Other beaches outside Parga are also worth a visit: Lichnos (4 kilometres away from Parga), Sarakiniko (12 kilometres) and Aï Giannakis (9 kilometres).

Krioneri Beach in Parga

Swim to the islet of Panagia

Just across Krioneri beach is a charming little islet with a church. You can easily swim there and reach it in less than 10 minutes! The view of Parga and its pretty houses from there is worth it.

Panagia islet in Parga

Ali Pasha’s Castle

Located a few kilometres above Parga, right outside the village of Anthoussa, Ali Pasha’s castle was built in 1814 with the aim of bombarding and then capturing Parga. Ali Pasha was then the governor of the Epirus region for the Ottoman Empire.

The view of the Ionian Sea from the castle is one of the most beautiful in the region, with a panorama of the islands of Paxi to the northwest and Lefkada to the southwest.

To get there, take the train of Parga which offers a 2-hour tour including a stop at Anthoussa. Alternatively, you can also hike to Ali Pasha’s Castle, it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes from Parga (around 5 kilometres).

In Anthoussa, stop at the Watermill Museum and walk to the beautiful waterfall.

Rent a boat

To discover the coast around Parga, go on a boat trip! There are many tours to the nearby beaches, I like how when on the sea you can appreciate the coastline from a different perspective. You can book your boat trip directly at the port or online right here.

What we like to do is to rent a small motorboat during one afternoon, so we are free to discover the coast at our own pace (also available directly at the port).

Renting a boat in Parga

The best restaurants, tavernas and bars in Parga

Here is a selection of places I particularly enjoy in Parga:

Med Parga : very nice place to have a drink or dinner at the end of the day, the view over the sea and the sunset is fantastic.

Sakis : ideal to discover traditional Greek dishes! The menu is pretty extensive.

Gyros bank : the best souvlaki & gyros in Parga!

Bacchos Restaurant : a great place for a meal by the sea.

Atrium Bar : a bar overlooking the bay of Piso Krioneri, very pleasant at the end of the day.

Veranda Cocktail Bar : a trendy place to enjoy excellent cocktails in the evening.

Avocado Cocktail Bar : rooftop with a beautiful view over the whole town.

Day trips ideas from Parga

Located only 27 kilometres away from Parga, this pretty resort is famous for its intense blue sea and small islands with emerald green vegetation. Don’t miss the Blue Lagoon and the Bella Vraka beach on the island of Megalo Mourtemeno! The latter can be reached on foot via a shallow sandbank connecting it to the coastline. When in Sivota, rent a boat! It is the best way to discover all the beaches.

Sivota

The islands of Paxos and Antipaxos form the Paxi archipelago. It is a destination south of Corfu very popular for its crystal-clear sea and pretty fishing villages! How to get there: Parga Cruises organises day trips and takes you through the highlights of the archipelago.

When in Parga, you can also go on a day trip to the island of Corfu! The ferry leaves at 8.30 am and returns to Parga at 6.30 pm. The journey is quite long, about 2.5 hours each way. The port there is only a few minutes walk from the old town, but you can also take a taxi at the roundabout when going out of the port. There, you will have enough time to explore Corfu Town, wander through its pretty alleys and on the Liston, browse through its local, charming shops, discover the Old Fortress and maybe even swim at Faliraki, a beach in the heart of Corfu’s old town.

The Acheron

In Greek mythology, the Acheron is one of the rivers of the Underworld, and a branch of the underground river Styx. It is a place steeped in history, where you can enjoy swimming, walking (feet in the river), kayaking, horse riding… all in a magnificent natural setting. Don’t forget to bring a swimming suit and suitable shoes! The Acheron is 25 kilometres away from Parga and the best way to get there is by car. Alternatively, you can reach it with a boat called the “Lichnos Express”, which you will find in the port of Parga.

Dodoni Sanctuary and Theatre

If you’re a history buff, don’t miss the Dodoni Sanctuary near the town of Ioannina. The journey takes just over an hour (75 kilometres) but is well worth the trip: there is an ancient site dedicated to the cult of Zeus that includes a superb theatre.

The island of Lefkada has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Ionian Sea! The good thing about it? The island is so close to the mainland that it is connected by a bridge, so you can get there by car. The north of the island is 85 kilometres away from Parga, a little less than an hour and a half drive. There are some beautiful beaches in the north of the island, but if you want to discover Porto Katsiki, Lefkada’s most famous beach, it’s an extra hour’s drive.

If you want to know more about this beautiful destination, have a look at this weekend trip to Lefkada !

Porto Katsiki beach, Lefkada

Best time to visit Parga in Greece: what’s the weather like?

Parga is lovely between April (after the Orthodox Easter) and October. Outside this period, you will find most activities closed. The area is still a pleasant place to hike, with mild temperatures in winter. The months of June till September are hot, with temperatures exceeding 30°C. Choose this period if you plan to spend your days at the beach, otherwise earlier or later in the season if you don’t want to be bothered by the heat.

Parga is one of my favourite destinations on Greece’s west coast, we always make a stop there on our way to Corfu. I hope you’ll enjoy it too! Have a great holiday in Greece ☀️.

We are going to Parga for the first time on 13 July. Reviews say Meteora is a must, despite the fact it seems a long day we feel we should go. We considered driving but part of our holiday is not having to get behind the wheel ourselves, can anyone recommend a good tour company in Parga? We are travelling with Thomas Cook but assume the trip via them will be more expensive.

There's a suggestion on this topic

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g189452-i9710-k7534442-Meteora-Parga_Preveza_Region_Epirus.html#58947051

Thomson excursion (lunch not included) for comparison

http://www.thomsonexcursions.co.uk/excursions-details/000916/Greece/000915/Parga/000916/Parga-in-/1008994040/MightyMeteora.aspx

We used Ephira Travel for our Meteora trip.

At 40 euro, it was much cheaper than our tour operator (Olympic) at 55 euro.

Lunch was included, entrance to monasteries (3 euro each) was not included.

The people at Ephira are very nice and helpful.

We also did the 7 island tour with them.

We used Kanaris (I think) on the harbour front for our Vikos Gorge trip as Ephira said they hadn't had any interest in the trip.

One thing to consider - Ephira & Kanaris do the Meteora trip on different days, Wednesday (Ephira) Thursday (Kanaris) so it may come down to which day is best for you.

Same for Vikos - Monday (Ephira) Tuesday (Kanaris).

I'd use both companies again.

This is really helpful information as we arrive in Parga at the end of the month and I really wanted to visit Meteora. However we travel on a Thursday and we are only there for a week, does anyone know of any tour companies offering Meteora on any other days? If not it will have to be the Wednesday (just didnt fancy a long day on our last full day!). Thanks

ephira travel parga greece

The 'must see' monastery IMHO is Metamorphosis which has a fabulous museum containing wonderful manuscripts dating back as far as the 9th century as well as vestments up to 500 years old and a section showing the history of the Greek war of Independence and Greek resistance in WW2. You need a minimum of 2 hours to do it justice. Metamorphosis is closed on Tuesdays.

I was at Meteora late 90th. We were there early in the morning to beat the crowd at the main Monestary. Then we visit two more and it took 3/4 of a day. Went with an excellent guide from Sweden, which really were important. You need to know what you see.

We're looking at excursions to avoid the drive, and not miss the scenery but ...

How many steps are involved? Think they visit Megalo And Varlaam ...

Can you do them at your own pace, or are you rushed to meet their schedule?

In Parga now. Thanks for any assistance.

Trip booked with Ephira:

AFAICR, you stop at a motorway café in the morning, then visit Gran Meteora & Saint Stephan.

Late lunch at Kolambaka then on to Metsovo for a stop.

As it is a coach tour, you obviously have to do things to their schedule.

However, we didn't feel rushed.

I'd pop into travel agents and ask them for their itinerary as they may change during later season

I've mentioned 2 agents in my post #2.

Many thanks. The talk of 100s of steps are off-putting to the 'less than athletic'.

Will we be given time to complete them or get trampled by the 'athletes' on their way down?

Is St Stephen the one with fewer steps to negotiate ?

Will ask around at a few agents ...

I'm sure you'll be given enough time to negotiate the steps.

Saint Stephen is the one you visit from above and walk down to the bottom i.e. not going to see the monastery and returning back to your starting point.

Gran Meteora - you go up the steps to the monastery and then come back down to the same place.

Take note of my comment in my earlier post that Ephira & Kanaris do the trips on different days - or at least they did when we were in Parga in late June.

As some monasteries are only open on certain days, you'll possibly visit different monasteries, depending on who you book with.

Maybe worth asking which ones you'll see and then see if you can get hold of a book on Meteora and see which monasteries you'd prefer to see.

How will you come?

Address: gaki zeri 21, parga 48060, epirus, greece, the hotel is located on the steps of the castle. we suggest you do not come on foot if your luggage is heavy or large..

You follow the ring road, you do not enter the centre of Parga. You will reach an intersection where it goes straight to the villages of Anthousa, Agia , Perdika and left where it goes to the beach of Valtos and the Venetian Castle of Parga. You will head left where it ends at a second junction. It doesn’t turn anywhere, you go straight on a one way street. It’s a bit of a private road, so before you go down the one-way check if a car is coming up ,if it catches you halfway down, you will wait for it to go back. This particular street ends at the Venetian Castle. There is a small alley where you can leave your car for a while and drop off your luggage. The hotel is 2 minutes down the steps on your right hand side.

The best way is to call a taxi as soon as you get off the bus. Tell the gentleman who will take you to the entrance of the Venetian castle of Parga to drop you off. From there our hotel is 2 minutes down the steps on your left hand side.

Has anyone used this company please. Are they legitimate and are we covered in case things go wrong such as our ABTA and ATOL in UK

Regards and thanks kim

' class=

I've been visiting Parga for many years (twice each year) and never heard anyone 'bad mouth' Ephira Travel. This does'nt mean that they are 'perfect' - it means that on the few occasions when things don't go right they sort it out PDQ.

Ephira Travel are legitimate (licenced) but remember that this does'nt mean that they will be bonded like ABTA, however, what I would say is that I trust Ephira before most british agents.

It sounds as though you are intending to arrange something through Ephira Travel, what is it, what will your payment method be - perhaps you could get back to me.

I am a 'dyed in the wool' independent traveller so praising travel agents does not come easy - suffice it to say that I wish we had agents like Ephira in the UK. They actually earn their commission.

I'm sure taisy (another Parga visitor) will also be able to comment about Ephira Travel. Please get back to us for more info.

Hi thanks for your reply.

We have been bitten over the internet once before so a little wary. What methods of payment would be available to us in your experience as we are not keen on paying over the internet without security,

Hoping to go ahead and book today if any accommodation is still available. It seems a very popular resort.

What form of transport do you use from the airport - taxis seem a little expensive!

A couple of things spring to mind

Secondly, have you seen any accommodation you like on the Ephira Travel site? If you have it may be advertised on the Parga web site

http://www.parga.com

I don't like taking trade away from Ephira (they're straight people) but some of the accommodation owners advertise on the aforementioned sight and also offer the facility of picking you up from the airport - free of charge (just remember that they are saving the commission).

Regarding car hire - yes I do have my favourites and I always book from the UK before travelling. If I was asked to recommend only one it would be ArgusCarRentals.com a Dublin based company who use 'international' partners, in Preveza usually Europcar, sometimes Hertz or AutoUnion. Two weeks high season from about £200.00 fully inclusive (approx 270 euros) - if you do go for a quote with them be sure to join "Club Argus" which is free of charge and entitles you to a small discount.

When paying for accommodation if dealing direct, at worst you'll be asked for a credit card as first night guarantee - usually nothing. This last couple of weeks I've booked 7 Greek hotels direct and only one has asked for my credit card.

I'm sure you'll have more questions, if so get back to me.

Message for taisy............ can you help bossyboots with her accommodation and transport (from the airport) dilemma?

Forgot to mention,

Regarding credit cards:- no doubt you are aware of the guarantees which come with their use. You are entering into a credit agreement with your card company for the supply of goods or services - quite simply this means that "if you don't get you don't pay". This includes the use of the cards abroad. If you want to deal with Ephira Travel make sure you use your card - although with Ephira you should not have a problem.

Hi Phil, it's Sunday, have you opened the Retsina yet?

We too have been to Parga many times and really do prefer to travel independently. It many not necessarily be a great deal cheaper but the accommodation and location will be far better than that booked through a tour operator.

Ephira Travel is a well established and reputable company. However, as Phil states, some of the accommodation on their books can be booked direct through the owners.

Last June we stayed at Elpidas House (really lovely accommodation) for 35 euros per night and the owners picked us up from the airport and took us back free of charge - wonderful people. Again, we paid a couple of days before the end of the holiday. This eliminates the risk factor of losing deposits etc.

As Phil said, book your flights before accommodation as these are harder to obtain. We booked our flights last August (I know, well in advance for the following June) with XL - about £220 each. We got the price direct from XL but booked through the local travel agent - who will always match the price - and therefore they are fully ABTA bonded.

If you decide to use Ephira Travel and they ask for a small deposit, send a money order if you are uneasy about paying over the internet. It may cost a few pounds but may help you feel less anxious.

Once again, it's very easy to go independently and I'm sure you'll enjoy the freedom it gives you.

Hope this helps to reassure you but if you need any further help please do ask.

Best Regards to all,

No Retsina, just a cup of coffee (not even Greek) and looking out at our British weather. From my computer room I have lovely views of rolling hills but I still miss the Pindhos Mountains - do you think I'm being greedy?

Nothing wrong with a bit of serious day dreaming, people should find more time to do so. Imagination is a truly wonderful thing and, to quote W. H. Davies ......

What poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

Best Regards,
