Aliguay Island

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

Dapitan City is not just all about Dakak Park Beach Resort and Jose Rizal anymore. One of the best beaches to experience when in Dapitan is the crystal clear turquoise waters of Aliguay Island.

While underway the swells were a bit rough, but that didn’t matter anymore as we were greeted by the shimmering white sands of Aliguay Island upon arrival.  I find the island small and inhabited mostly by fisher folks. To my surprise, I discovered an airstrip! Such a small island at that with an airstrip can only mean two things!! Either the island is owned by such a wealthy business tycoon who flies to the island for his own private leisure or the island must soon be a major beach destination!  Read More:  http://www.bestspotsph.com/2012/08/guest-post-my-aliguay-island-adventour.html

Ultimate Guide to Zamboanga del Norte

Though not currently as popular as other destinations in Mindanao, Zamboanga del Norte teems with history and culture. The largest province in the Zamboanga Peninsula, it has a wealth of natural attractions as well.

It is dubbed the Twin-City Province, being the home of neighboring cities Dipolog, the provincial capital, and Dapitan, its cultural heart.

The latter has the distinction of being the country’s first Heritage Zone. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) made the declaration on May 27, 2011.

Either of these two cities is a convenient base for those thinking of traveling to Zamboanga del Norte.

To help you with the planning, here is a four-day guide to the best places to see and experience in the province.

Day 1: Sample the Best of Dipolog

‘D Hotel  Rizal Avenue corner Osmeña Street, Dipolog

Upon arrival in Dipolog, you can drop your things off first at ‘D Hotel. Centrally located in the heart of the city, this hotel has options that range from rooms to suites.

The hotel offers free breakfast, WiFi, and airport shuttle for guests. It has four dining options: Tonino’s Resto and Wine Bar for continental and Asian fusion cuisine; Deli at the Taylors Room for wine, cheeses, and cold cuts; Umami Room for Japanese cuisine; and Cucina Italiana for pizza and pasta.

You can book a Standard Room for as low as Php1,700/night.

For more information, visit ‘D Hotel’s Facebook page .

Ariana Hotel Airport Road, Dipolog

Another option is this hotel that is located only one to two minutes away from Dipolog airport.

All rooms have air conditioning, a refrigerator, cable TV, hot and cold shower, and minibar. Guests have access to free WiFi, 24-hour room service, and free parking. It also has an in-house restaurant that serves free breakfast, a coffee shop, bar, and music lounge.

You can book a Single Executive Room for Php1,850/night, Double Executive Room for Php2,450/ night, Garden Suite for Php4,850/night, and a Presidential Suite for Php8,900/night.

Visit Ariana Hotel’s Facebook page for more details.

Dakak Park and Beach Resort Barangay Taguilon, Dapitan

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

The “it” place in Mindanao in the ‘90s, this resort still lives up to its reputation decades later. It remains a favorite among locals and those from nearby provinces. Day 3 of your trip can be spent just at this resort.

Dakak’s white sand beach is a jump off point for water activities, while its Adventure Zone offers outdoor ones.

The resort has accommodations that have scenic views of the Sulu Sea and the surrounding cliffs and mountains.

For reservations, visit Dakak Beach Resort’s official website .

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral

You can start your trip with a visit to this church named after the principal patroness of the city. Constructed in 1894, it has since undergone several renovations, the latest of which was in 2009 when its façade was inlaid with marble.

Also called Dipolog Cathedral, its present altar is a replica of the retablo originally designed by José Rizal during his exile. One of the main attractions is its ceiling made of hardwood.

The cathedral was designated as one of the 500 Jubilee Churches for the quincentennial of Philippine Christianity.

Just across is Plaza Magsaysay which, though rather unremarkable, lends well for a pleasant morning stroll. The park sits right beside the City Hall.

Sungkilaw Falls

You can spend the rest of the morning relaxing at this waterfall that is about 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Dipolog.

Nestled in the heart of a lush forest, Sungkilaw Falls challenges visitors with a rough hike, but its pristine and refreshing waters make the trek worth it.

With the help of the local government and Subanen communities, structures have been constructed in the area such as cottages and toilets. Trails had also been carved out for a smoother hike.

Cogon Eco-Park

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

Spend the entire afternoon at this protected area that is home to different species of flora and fauna.

On the way, you can drop by the city center for some takeout lunch. Then you can proceed to picnic at the eco-park amid towering acacia, mahogany, rattan, and narra trees.

What started out as a reforestation project in 1952 is now 344 hectares of land covered with thick forests. It is a go-to place for families and friends for a weekend of camping.

Aside from the hiking trails and the camping site, it has a recreation of a Subanen Village, a hanging bridge, and an aviary.

Dipolog Sunset Boulevard

Cap off your day at Dipolog’s most famous strip. Promenade along this boulevard facing the Sulu Sea where you can catch the sunset.

While waiting for the sun to dip below the horizon, you can snack on the various street foods sold by nearby hawkers.

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

This stretch comes alive as dusk settles. It transforms to a hive of activity with a seemingly endless row of vendors selling all sorts of eats from barbecues to fried chicken skin, ice cream to fresh fruits.

Day 2: A Dose of History and Adventure

Church of Saint James the Greater

The bulk of your second day will be spent at Glorious Fantasy Land which does not open until 2pm. You can opt to spend the morning exploring some of Dapitan’s historical sites.

Start the day with a quick visit to the Church of Saint James the Greater. This was where Rizal heard mass every Sunday during his four-year exile.

There is a marker near the entrance where Rizal usually sat. He could not go near the altar during mass because of his excommunication from the Catholic Church.

The country’s National Hero painted a backdrop inspired by a church in Barcelona for the altar. Sadly, the painting was later destroyed in a fire.

Aside from its ties to Rizal, the church is also known for its distinct ceiling. Alternating orange and white rectangles form a swirling pattern, creating an almost dizzying illusion of depth and motion.

Ilihan Hill

After visiting the church, you can go on a short hike atop the hill just behind it. There is a staircase by the entrance where you have to climb over 200 steps to reach the top.

Ilihan Hill served as the burial ground of Dapitan’s original settlers. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, they renamed it Fort Dapitan and put up stone walls and cannons.

Dapitan Heritage Zone

The NHCP determined 33 heritage structures in Dapitan’s Heritage Zone, giving rise to its moniker the “Shrine City.”

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

Aside from the Church of Saint James the Greater, a bike around town reveals century-old ancestral houses and other timeworn structures.

One of the few remaining original heritage houses in the city is that of Pablo Page’s. Built in 1919, it was often the venue of gatherings among the local social and political elite in the ‘50s to the ‘70s.

Another ancestral house is that of Aniano Adasa’s which now houses the Dapitan Tourism Office. It was built in 1900 and has American and Spanish influences.

Since 2016, the local government has been working with the national government and the private sector to preserve their historical and cultural treasures.

Glorious Fantasyland

Spend the rest of the day at Mindanao’s biggest theme park. It has over 30 rides and attractions for all ages. Adrenaline junkies can go on a ride at their Zimmerman roller coaster and the Galleon, while kids can take a spin at the teacup ride or the ferris wheel.

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

Glorious Fantasyland is also known for its musical show entitled “Nia and Anwar” which starts at 8pm. After the show, visitors are treated to a colorful “Festival of Colors” parade with its 12 elaborate floats. A fireworks display punctuates the night every weekend.

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

Glorious Fantasyland’s all-in package of unlimited rides, show, parade, and fireworks display during weekends is at Php1000/adult and Php500/child 4ft below. Gates open at 2pm and close at 10pm or later depending on the volume of guests.

Day 3: Discover Dakak

Dapitan is not only synonymous with Rizal but also with Dakak Park and Beach Resort thanks to the TV ads that ran regularly in a popular noontime show in the ‘90s.

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

The resort is a 15-hectare area that is known for its lush coves and 750-meter white sand beach. Visitors can engage in different water activities such as jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and banana boat riding.

Dakak also has excellent dive spots for amateur and professional divers. Its waters are home to soft corals, marine invertebrates, large basket sponges, sea anemones, clownfish, and octopuses. If you are lucky, you can encounter blue spotted rays. There is even a wreck of a passenger ship.

If you prefer land-based activities, the Adventure Park offers rappelling, rock climbing, airsoft games, and horseback riding. It has all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) for rent and one of the longest dual ziplines in Asia.

If you are not staying in Dakak, a day tour will set you back Php1,000/adult and Php500/child. The fee includes access to the beach, dolphin and kiddie pools, Adventure Zone Area, Aquasport Center, and restaurants.

Not included are rental fees, the golf course, and Villa Angelina.

Day 4: Retrace the Steps of Rizal in Dapitan

Rizal Disembarkation Site

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

It is only fitting to begin your final day in Zamboanga del Norte at the site where Rizal started his life as an exile. He disembarked from the steamer S.S. Cebu at Santa Cruz Beach, 7pm on July 17, 1892.

Marking the point of landing is a monument conceived by Antonio Tuviera and designed by Architect Nilo Ajo Ferraren. It is composed of bronze statues of Rizal, ship captain Delgras, and three artillery men.

The statues were sculpted, installed, and bronzed by Ronel Roces, a former apprentice of National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon Abueva. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on December 29, 2009.

Across the landing site is a 20-foot cross symbolizing the propagation of Christianity in Dapitan.

Rizal Park and Shrine

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

This 16-hectare protected area aims to preserve the memories of Rizal during his exile in Dapitan from 1892 to 1896. He himself purchased the estate.

The property has five faithfully reconstructed bamboo and nipa houses. All were originally built by Rizal and had been rebuilt in their original locations.

The biggest of the five is Casa Residencia which served as Rizal’s residence.

The other structures are Casa Redonda, the quarters for Rizal’s students; Casa Cuadrada, a secondary dormitory to accommodate his growing number of pupils; Casa Redonda Pequeña, a henhouse; and Casitas Hospitales, two structures originally intended as tea houses but Rizal converted them into clinics for patients from far-flung areas.

Near the shrine’s main gate is Museo ni Jose Rizal. It houses several memorabilia including Rizal’s letters, wardrobe, medical instruments, fishing tools, and replicas of his artworks including those of his wife Josephine Bracken.

The original blackboard, table, and chairs used in his school are also on display.

Do not miss the heart-shaped rock where Rizal wrote his longest poem, “Mi Retiro”, which has 24 stanzas. This is also where he exchanged vows with Bracken.

Admission to Rizal Park and Shrine is free.

Getting there

Dipolog is the gateway to the province of Zamboanga del Norte. Major local airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have direct flights to the city. There are also daily buses from Zamboanga City to Dipolog and Dapitan.

The cheapest way to explore the cities is through jeepneys and tricycles. You may also rent your own vehicle. Exploring downtown Dapitan is best done on a bike. Coordinate with your hotel for rentals.

Dipolog City: The Pride of Zamboanga del Norte

Dipolog shared much of its cultural history with the ancient town of Dapitan to which it once belonged. It traces its beginnings long before the Spanish conquistadores set foot on the island of Mindanao. This heritage has carried on to the present and has contributed to Dipolog's colorful and unique culture.

Dipolog City: The Pride of Zamboanga del Norte

Dipolog Beach

Dipolog was previously known as Tulwanan, which means “a settlement by the river.” Its earliest settlers all belonged to the Subanen Tribe called Subanon or river people with an established religion founded in animism. These Austronesian peoples descended from the Malay ethnic group which roamed Mindanao and Southeast Asia via land bridges as early as 30,000 years ago. Later migrations of other tribes were made by water and took place over several thousand years.

Linabo Climb

The 3003 Steps to Linabo Peak offers a panoramic view of the twin cities of Dipolog and Dapitan. It is also the venue for the annual “Katkat Sakripisyo” of Catholic devotees who perform their penitential rites during the Lenten Season.

The Cogon Eco-Park is a 344-hectare reforestation area situated in Barangay Cogon established in 1958. Mature trees are growing wild in the area; species such as Mahogany, Teak, Yemane, Lumbayao, Molave, Acacia, Narra, Mayapis, Lauan, Narig, Tianong, Duguan, Lumbayao, Rattan and Nato. It is also one of the favorite camping sites of different mountaineering groups. It also houses the Dipolog OISCA Children’s Forest Park. The most prominent feature of the park is the Sungkilaw Falls.

The Historical Sta. Cruz – Punta Corro

Sta. Cruz–Punta Corro is the spot where migrating Boholanos from the Visayas landed and established settlement. A cross was erected by the settlers on May 3, 1905 as a thanksgiving altar to God for their safe journey. Roman Catholic mass were likewise celebrated on this area before the Spaniards established a chapel 1.5 kilometers inward along the town center street now known as Rizal Avenue. A Cathedral was later erected by the Spanish friars sometime in 1895 replacing the old church, with Dr. Jose Rizal designing the church altar from a sketch requested by his former professor, Fr. Jose Villaclara, once Dipolog's cura during the Spanish Era.

Dipolog Hall

Dipolog Hall was built on July 1, 1913 under the administration of General John J. Pershing. The corner street houses the monument of three prominent Dipolognons namely Hon. Pascual T. Martinez, the first appointed Mayor of Dipolog in 1913-1918, Rev. Fr. Nicasio Y. Patangan, the first Filipino Diocesan Priest of Mindanao, and Eugenio R. Margate, a farmer for 25 years who introduced the Margate System of Planting Rice.

Dipolog Fountain

The bowl raised to heavens is a gesture of thanksgiving and offering to God Almighty for the generous outpouring of graces and blessings, bountiful harvests and sustained peace and prosperity.

The souvenir shop is visited by many tourists. The store is owned by Elsa Leones. In late 2010 ,the original S and J is supposed to be located at Bonifacio Street but then transferred.

In Dipolog City, one can experience a quiet and scenic place in the south with a unique blend of the traditional and the contemporary.  There are bargains for fresh tropical fruits such as lanzones, mangosteen, rambutan, marang, manga, and caimito. Bring home famous local products like bottled sardines, uyap, ginamos, home-made corned beef, and Spanish Chorizo.  Gift your friends with delicacies as tinagaktak, bakya and lintoy, or just shop around for Muslim clothing such as the malong and the batik.

In Zamboanga del Norte, tourism seen thriving in former conflict zone

S ERGIO OSMEÑA, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE, Philippines — The Malindang mountain range, which used to be the site of countless battles between government troops and communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels, is now being promoted as a tourist destination.

After government forces gained the upper hand in the long-drawn war against communist rebels who used to control the area, resort owners formed themselves into a consortium called Mt. Malindang Cross-Border Tourism (MMCT) to invest and develop tourism sites on Mt. Malindang, a mountain range that sits along the border of the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental, said lawyer Orlando Salatandre Jr., president of MMCT, as the group celebrated its first anniversary on Saturday.

Although Zamboanga del Norte still remained among the poorest provinces in the country, Salatandre said they wanted to share with people in the communities the benefits of tourism by making them part of the tourism activities in the area.

Part of the plan, for instance, is to train motorcycle (“habal-habal”) drivers in the area to be more tourist-friendly so that they could also be hired as guides and for other services catering to tourists, said Salatandre.

Among the tourism sites operating in the three provinces are agritourism farms, parks and restaurants, waterfalls, mountain views, and lakes offering tourists experiences unique to Mt. Malindang.

Most of these tourism destinations were already developed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic but they were only aggressively promoted by the resort owners after they formed the consortium last year, Salatandre added.

Insurgency-free

On Saturday, as the MMCT celebrated its first anniversary, they gathered resort owners, partner stakeholders, the military and members of the Philippine National Police at the municipal gym here.

Zamboanga del Norte has been declared “insurgency-free” in the last three years and recently, in his visit here, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. lauded soldiers and local officials for the dismantling of the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC) with the death of Aprecia Alvarez Rosette, alias Bambam, its leader.

Rosette was killed during a military combat operation in Malagalad village of Dumingag town, Zamboanga del Sur, on Feb. 27 this year.

According to the military, the operation of the WMRPC covered the Zamboanga Peninsula region and the province of Misamis Occidental.

‘Guardians’

The military considered the hinterlands of Mt. Malindang as the former “lair” of communist rebels but the construction of new roads and the coming in of tourism investors opened up the area for development.

Both the military and the police pledged their commitment to serve as “guardians” to the natural resources of Mt. Malindang while the Department of Tourism (DOT) helped give tourism training to policemen who would be deployed to different tourism destinations in the province.

Dara May Cataluña, director of the DOT in the Zamboanga Peninsula, said her office trained tourist police to be deployed in different destinations in Zamboanga del Norte and would soon start to give similar training to barangay “tanods” (village watchmen) and barangay officials to prepare them for the arrival of tourists in their areas.

Cataluña also said that the DOT also acknowledged the Subanen indigenous peoples (IP) as among the IPs living in Zamboanga Peninsula and in Isabela City in Basilan province.

“We have to establish that we have an identity just like the other regions and provinces known for the tribes in their area. They have to be recognized and honored for being the first tribe to live in the Peninsula,” she said.

LANTAY VIEW: Best mountain resort in Zamboanga Del Norte

With just a year in operations, the Lantay View Mountain Resort in Zamboanga del Norte has certainly placed itself in the tourismscape of the province. Perched on an 860-meter hilly area of Barangay Penacio, the very location of the mountain resort features a commanding view of the valley below and portions of the Sergio Osmena Sr. town.

The mountain resort is named Lantay meaning “Terrace” in the Cebuano language. Truly, the name itself depicts its features. The Lantay View features many view decks of various styles dotting the resort area. There are many spots that guests of all ages would truly enjoy. Albeit being a new mountain resort, the management already received the ZAMPEN TOURISM AWARD last September 2021, and they just recently celebrated their first anniversary last August 20, 2022. They are also officially recognized by the Municipal Tourism Office as one of the top tourism destinations.

Our heartfelt Congratulations to Lantay View Mountain Resort.

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

Since of its altitude, the resort really gets cold starting dusk until sunrise and having your jacket or sweater handy is a must. During our stay there, we encountered a foggy afternoon which added to the mystic feeling. At sunrise, we saw a sea of clouds at the adjacent mountain ranges. Such an amazing view upon rising from a good night’s sleep.

The idea to operate such a mountain resort sprouted during the heights of severe community quarantines. The family cannot go elsewhere and thought of building their own mountain resort for their family and for the public to experience and enjoy. With a family of engineers and allied health professionals, they altogether put forth their skills and built the Lantay View Mountain Resort.

The mountain resort is located at Barangay Penacio on a 9-hectare hilly terrain which the family Palomares acquired in the year 1996. The resort operations are managed by the family with the matriarch commonly seen at the front office and store operations, and the patriarch is usually seen with infrastructure and maintenance operations. Their manpower is mostly locals to help spur economy in their town.

ACCOMMODATIONS

There are two types of Accommodations they offer:

zamboanga del norte tourist spot

The A-Frame Huts are considered premium stays in the mountain resort. They have three rooms with private terraces right at the cliff while five more huts are a few meters away from the cliff edge. These huts have their own private terrace with wooden seats and a table, two double-size mattresses, 4 individual pillows and thick blankets, ample power outlets, and indoor and exterior lighting. These A-Frame huts can accommodate 4 guests. To get the best view, book and reserve Rooms number 1-3.

Since the huts are built tightly in a row, it is common that you can hear your neighbouring guest’s conversation, especially during the quiet of the night. Hence, we truly recommend keeping noise at the minimum with respect to the other guests.

The Premium A-Frame huts have quite lowered ceilings and door arches, if you are tall, you have to really be aware of the varying heights of the architecture. In my experience, I bumped my head hard twice.

Since there are wooden tables and seats at your private terrace, you can enjoy your meals from there while enjoying the view. The A-Frame huts are valued at Php1,000* per night, a fee of Php150/pax in excess of guest limit per accommodation inclusive of extra mattress, pillow and blanket.

They also have two Private Economy huts that can comfortably fit two guests but can accommodate up to four. These Economy huts feature a high ceiling, a premium mosquito net, and a mini porch and are located on the quiet side of the mountain resort. The overnight stay is valued at Php500* per night, a fee of Php150/pax in excess of guest limit per accommodation inclusive of extra mattress, pillow and blanket.
