Kermis, a traditional Dutch experience
If you happen to be in the Netherlands during the summer months, you might come across a colorful and vibrant event known as a “ kermis .” This Dutch word refers to a fair or carnival that travels from town to town throughout the country, offering a variety of attractions, games, and food for all ages to enjoy.
The history of kermis dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was originally a religious celebration marking the anniversary of the dedication of a church. Over time, the religious aspect of the event faded away, and it became more of a secular gathering for people to enjoy themselves. Today, a typical kermis offers a wide range of rides and attractions:
Thrill rides – Roller coasters, giant swings, and other adrenaline-pumping rides are a staple of the kermis experience. These rides are designed to give you a thrilling, stomach-churning experience that will leave you breathless.
Family rides – For those who want something a little tamer, kermis also offers a variety of family-friendly rides, such as carousels, Ferris wheels, and bumper cars. These rides are perfect for families with young children or anyone who wants a more laid-back experience.
Carnival games – From ring toss to balloon darts to shooting galleries, there are a variety of games that you can play at a kermis. These games often offer prizes, so be sure to bring your competitive spirit!
Food stalls – Dutch kermis is known for its delicious food, which includes Dutch traditional snacks such as poffertjes (small, fluffy pancakes), oliebollen (deep-fried dough balls), stroopwafels (waffles with syrup filling), and more. You’ll also find plenty of savory options like Dutch fries , hamburgers , and hot dogs .
Live entertainment – Many kermis events feature live music, performances, and other forms of entertainment. You might see a local band playing, a street performer doing tricks, or a DJ spinning the latest hits.
Most famous and biggest kermissen in the Netherlands
One of the most famous kermis events in the Netherlands is the Tilburgse Kermis , held every July in the city of Tilburg . With over 200 attractions spread out across several miles of streets and squares, it’s the largest kermis in the country, drawing visitors from all over. Other notable kermis events include the Utrechtse Voorjaarskermis , held in the spring in the city of Utrecht , and the Rotterdamse Zomerkermis , held in August in the city of Rotterdam .
So if you’re looking for a fun and festive way to experience Dutch culture and tradition, be sure to check out a kermis during your visit to the Netherlands. With its colorful sights, exciting rides, and delicious food, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

De Kermis: 5 things you didn’t know about funfairs in the Netherlands
Bright, flashing lights, shrieks, music and laughter…if these sensations reach your eyes and ears you’ve made it to one of the many great funfairs in the Netherlands! 🎡
Yes, that’s right de kermis is back in town. Just in case this season wasn’t fun enough, with Easter and King’s Day sweetening up our weeks, this is also the time when funfairs are rolling into towns and cities across the Netherlands.
But there’s more to this than just bright lights and noise, here are 5 things you maybe didn’t know about the Dutch Kermis .
1. What’s in a name
It turns out, the Dutch word for funfair ‘Kermis’ has pretty conservative roots. The word ‘kermis’ stems from the words ‘ kerk ’ (church) and ‘mis’ (mass). As such, ‘Kermis’ signified the mass held to celebrate the anniversary of a church’s foundation or its patron saint.
Traditionally, these events were accompanied by a fair and were a chance for locals to take a break from work, be merry, and maybe even find love.
2. The oldest Dutch fair is REALLY old
The oldest Dutch fair is believed to have been held in Wijk bij Duurstede, in the Province of Utrecht. The first record of a fair there dates to July 26, 1023 — the same day that the St. Martin’s Church was consecrated.
Now, that’s pretty darn old and the tradition continues until today. If the Dutch can stick to anything, it’s a tradition that includes fatty foods and roller coasters.
3. Their pricing strategy is clever
Tickets for individual rides and games are usually set at a fixed price — €2 for the smaller rides and up to €3 for the bigger ones.
At first glance, this doesn’t seem like such a bad price, however, if you’ve ever been to a fair you’ll know just how easily all those turns on the bumper cars and attempts to win a teddy bear add up. Not to mention the sugar-laced treats you will inevitably buy.
Luckily most fairs now have their own websites where you can purchase a day pass for the attractions or access discount vouchers for particular rides. So, be sure to check out your local Kermis online before you go and you might just save some money!
4. The Kermis in Tilburg is the fair of all Dutch fairs
While there is a fair to be found in almost every Dutch town, Tilburg’s Kermis holds the title of being the biggest in the country. And with an estimated 1.5 million visitors each year, it is also the most popular fair.

This year the festivities run from July 21 to July 30. Highlights not to be missed include the over 250 attractions, the more than 25-year-old Pink Monday celebration, and the legendary fireworks on closing night.
Follow this link for more details on this spectacular summer celebration.
5) They’re around all summer long
You heard me, all summer long. Usually, there are fairs taking place in Delft , Den Haag , Ijmuiden and Haarlem . If the fair hasn’t reached your town yet, don’t worry, as the fairs continue throughout the summer and even into autumn.

I used to buy day passes and spend the day at the Cakewalk in the 60/70ish. Now I live in Canada and we have the most amazing fairs as well. Most times you’ll find a combination of homemade foods and lots of fries and burgers. No mayo though, that really sucks! and no Cakewalk! But, I have to say the SonenBreugel Kermis was outstanding! But, yes, I’m biased because it’s my hometown. Great stor
€2/€2.50?! Where did those prices come from. The last fair I went to, the prices were at least twice that. COVID put an end to the cheap prices I was used to. Also, no day passes either.

Did Uncle Lamb know about time travel in Outlander?
There are a lot of theories about time travel and who has the gene in the world of Outlander. What about Uncle Lamb? Was he a time traveler? Did he at least know it was possible?
By Alexandria Ingham | 6:00 AM EDT
Claire was raised by her Uncle Lamb, an archaeologist, in the world of Outlander . It meant that she got to travel the world and learn about different cultures and pieces of history. Could she have learned about something more if Uncle Lamb had kept her informed?
There are a lot of theories from fans that Uncle Lamb knew all about time travel. There are even theories that his family line, the Beauchamp line, is the one responsible for Claire’s genetic abilities to travel through time.
Is it possible that he knew all about it? Why didn’t he try to travel through time if he did?
Uncle Lamb may have carried the time travel gene in Outlander
One thing that I will agree with is that Uncle Lamb could have carried the time travel gene. Claire had to get the gene from at least one of her parents, and the Beauchamp line makes sense. After all, we know that the Beauchamp line dates back centuries in France.
However, it’s not likely the Beauchamp line itself. There’s a chance that it goes back to Comte St. Germain . He is a time traveler in the books, and we know that Percy Wainwright went searching for Fergus believing him to be the son of the Comte. This would suggest that Fergus could time travel. We also know that Fergus is the son of Amelie Beauchamp.
So, this would suggest that Fergus could be the one to continue the line of time travelers through the Beauchamp line, eventually leading to Henry and Quentin Beauchamp, Claire’s father and uncle.
This doesn’t mean that everyone with the gene can travel. The gene could be dormant, meaning that someone wouldn’t be able to travel through the portals. This suggests that Uncle Lamb, considering how much traveling her did, likely had a dormant gene.
Uncle Lamb may have known he couldn’t time travel
So, what about him knowing about time travel? You would think with his job that he would have come across stories of those who believed time travel was possible. Even if it wasn’t time travel, there could have been people who thought there were portals maybe to another world. Uncle Lamb would have come across the stories, but that doesn’t mean he would believe them.
While he would have listened to the stories, he would have also needed to weigh up the chances of superstition and possibility. As he went through different countries, he may have even come across where the portals were supposed to be and nothing happened. You see, while he knew about the stories, that doesn’t mean he knew how it all worked. What we know of Uncle Lamb, he wouldn’t have likely spent as much time as Geillis did in researching and actually considered a blood sacrifice to make it possible.
Uncle Lamb would have understood a little of genetics considering that science started in the mid-19th century. That doesn’t mean he would have considered time travel as a genetic possibility. So, maybe he never even considered that he would have the ability to time travel. If he had or if he had thought Claire could time travel, would he have risked taking her to portals?
It’s hard to know considering how little we actually know of Uncle Lamb’s personality. We know he didn’t have children of his own and he treated Claire more adult than most guardians would, but he had to have still loved her as his own. After all, if he didn’t, he would have left her at the boarding school regardless of her feelings. So, it would suggest that he didn’t know about time travel, or he just believed that he and Claire couldn’t do it.

Time Travel Equation Solved By Astrophysicist
Posted: March 25, 2024 | Last updated: March 25, 2024
After a lifetime of pursuing the idea, Physics Professor Ronald Mallett at the University of Connecticut has potentially figured out the theoretical aspects of time travel. Professor Mallett believes that black holes, rotating light, and gravitational pulls may hold the key to exploring time, but it’s all theoretical for now. There are still a lot of hurdles and limitations to handle before time travel can have real, practical applications.
A Life Spent Thinking About Time Travel
Love and loss pushed Professor Mallett into an obsession with time and space. When he was 10 years old, his father passed away from a heart attack. It was his father who nourished his love of science, but H.G. Wells’ book The Time Machine pushed him towards a focus on time travel.
He was hooked from the very first paragraph of the book, “Scientific people know very well that Time is only a kind of Space. And why cannot we move in Time as we move about in the other dimensions of Space?”
That paragraph never left him, and the professor let that time travel question guide him through school and into the Professor Emeritus of Physics position at the University of Connecticut.
Einstein And Black Holes
As he grew up, Professor Mallett spent much of his time on Albert Einstein’s theories about black holes. While his interest in time travel only continued to grow, a potential solution never showed itself. At least, not until the professor ended up in a hospital with a heart condition.
There, lying in the hospital bed, inspiration hit him. Black holes and the gravitational fields they created were the answer to time travel. These gravitational fields had the potential to lead to time loops, which then theoretically could allow people and objects to travel back in time.
Black Holes Manipulating Gravity
While this idea offered an ability to manipulate time, the other problem was how to use these time loops for time travel.
Professor Mallett found this time travel solution much easier than the first problem. Strong and continuous beams of light, like a ring of lasers, with a particular rotation could be used to manipulate gravity and mimic the distorting effects of a black hole.
Though the details are rather complicated, the big time travel picture is a lot simpler to grasp. The professor offers a comparison to help people understand. “Let’s say you have a cup of coffee in front of you. Start stirring the coffee with the spoon. It started to spin, right? That’s what a spinning black hole does. In Einstein’s theory, space and time are related to each other. That’s why it’s called space-time. So when the black hole spins, it will actually cause time to shift.”
Much To Figure Out
Professor Mallett may now have a theory on time travel and a machine to use to make it possible, but that doesn’t mean it will be here in the next few decades.
There’s still a lot to figure out to make such travel practical, such as where the insane amount of energy such a machine would require could come from, and how big the machine would need to be.
There’s also a major constraint on the machine. According to his theories, time travel would only be possible to the very beginning of when the machine was first built. In this way, it’s more like a one-way message service. You can potentially go forward quite a distance, but going back in time is limited by the machine’s creation.
Theoretical Aspects Of Time Travel
The professor has made a huge leap in figuring out the theoretical aspects of time travel, but there’s a lot more to discover and quite a few hurdles and paradoxes to figure out before scientists practically start messing around in time.
Still, the theory is a step in the right direction and does suggest that people can push past what science currently considers possible.
