FREE BUDAPEST TOUR

Free budapest tour basic information.

Price : Free but tips are appreciated (see our tipping guide here)

WHAT WE DO ON FREE BUDAPEST TOUR

I t is an insightful, fun-filled, and informative walk on the Pest side of Budapest. You can learn on this tour about Hungarian culture in general. In the end you’ll know about our history, culture, society, architecture, food, nightlife, and what the locals are actually like. The tour is focused on the best sights that Pest has to offer. The goal of this Budapest city walk is to discover and experience our city through the eyes of an insider.

We start our tour in downtown Budapest on the Elisabeth square , where we learn about the city’s origin and the history of the country in general.

Next, we are passing by St Stephen’s Basilica , one of the most magnificent buildings in Budapest, to learn about its history and hidden symbols.

On our next stop, at Archduke Joseph square, we tell you what the “most Hungarian Habsburg” did for the Hungarians.

We walk across Budapest’s most famous pedestrian-only area called Vörösmarty square where we introduce you to the prestigious  Gerbeaud café .

We continue our way along the famous Danube Promenade , which offers your plenty of excellent photo opportunities of Vigado , Buda Castle Hill, Gellert Hill, and the two iconic symbols of the town, called Little Princess and Chain Bridge.

We help you to impress your friends with your new Hungarian vocabulary at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . We take you to the Shoe Memorial to learn about the tragic happenings of the Holocaust.

We end the tour at the second-largest Parliament in Europe and tell you the important roles it has played in Hungarian history. Before we let you go, our tour guides will provide a final orientation and further useful recommendations.

If you are after a more detailed Budapest city walk…

Please note that this public tour is not suited to fully satisfy history or architecture buffs’ need for information. If you have a decidedly greater depth of interest in Budapest, please book  a fully customized private sightseeing walk , where you can make sure to spend time with the guides, and is based only on your areas of interest, needs and pace. Also, join our thematic walks by the Free Walking Tours Budapest Team, since on these tours we go into more details about different parts of Hungarian history and culture.

Summary & Comparison — Top 6 Walking Tours in Budapest

budapest city tour gratis

Reviews calculation: I am using the total review count of the activity from GetYourGuide, Tripadvisor, Guruwalk and Viator.

1. Night Vampire Walking Tour in Buda Castle District

budapest city tour gratis

💡 Note: This review is based on my experience during the 8:00 pm English-language tour, led by Joe as our guide.

Immerse yourself in the mysteries of the night with Budapest's one-of-a-kind walking tour , centered around undead folklore and haunting tales of the Hungary and Eastern Europe.

This isn't your average historical walking tour; prepare for spine-tingling stories that delve deep into Eastern European myths about vampires, ghosts, and the undead .

Highlights of the Tour

budapest city tour gratis

I can attest that this tour is not just another walking tour in Budapest—it's an immersive storytelling experience . Our guide, Joe, with his 20 years of improv acting experience, brings depth, humor, and a dramatic twist to Eastern European myths.

His spellbinding narrative skills are complemented by the ethereal beauty of the Castle District at night , a setting that enriches the storytelling and makes the tour truly unforgettable.

Starting Point and Accessibility

budapest city tour gratis

The journey begins at Clark Ádám Square , located at the base of Buda Hill. From here, you'll embark on a 5-10 minute ascent up the hill's stairs. For those with mobility issues, a funicular option is available to take you to the top for an extra 10€ fee.

budapest city tour gratis

The group size struck a perfect balance, numbering between 20 and 25 participants . This made it easy to connect with other tour participants without complicating the practical aspects of the tour, such as walking and finding a good listening spot around our guide.

Points of Critique

budapest city tour gratis

While Joe is an engaging orator, I found the latter half of the tour to lose a bit of its initial spark. After hearing 5-6 out of the total ten tales, the storytelling began to feel a bit repetitive .

Coupled with the late evening timing, the group's energy waned toward the end. Still, Joe’s dynamism keeps the atmosphere electric for most of the tour.

Should You Go?

budapest city tour gratis

If you're less concerned with historical facts and more interested in the dark and mysterious folklore of Budapest and Eastern Europe, this tour is a must-try. It's a thrilling way to explore the Castle District under the cloak of night.

2. Buda Castle Cave Labyrinth Walking Tour

budapest city tour gratis

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 1.5-hour English cave tour.

Discover the hidden depths of Budapest in the extensive cave system beneath the city's Castle District.

Known as Budavári barlang, this section was reopened to the public in 2019 after being off-limits for years.

The tour focuses on a fascinating 3km stretch of caves and takes you on a journey through time, exploring the geological and human history of these mysterious underground tunnels.

budapest city tour gratis

What sets this tour apart is its dedication to historical accuracy .

You'll learn about how these caves formed over millions of years — you'll even get to see where a mammoth left one of its teeth!

Beyond the geology, the tour dives into the 800-year history of human usage of the caves, from medieval storage and tax evasion to their roles as prisons, war refuges, criminal hideouts, and even locations for clandestine parties in the 90s.

budapest city tour gratis

The temperature inside the cave averages 10-12°C , so it's advisable to wear warm clothing and comfortable footwear you don't mind getting dirty.

However, for those visiting in summer attire, free ponchos are provided to keep you warm.

budapest city tour gratis

The meeting spot is at Trinity Square , right by the Trinity statue. A quick 5-minute walk will take you to the cave's entrance.

Unfortunately, the cave is not accessible to individuals with mobility impairments.

budapest city tour gratis

With an group size of 20-25 participants , the tour struck a perfect balance — facilitating smooth navigation through the maze-like caves while also enabling captivating, interactive storytelling.

budapest city tour gratis

In all honesty, there were few drawbacks to this unique journey, if any.

The tour company goes to great lengths to ensure everyone's comfort, and the expert guides make the experience engaging and educational.

If history blended with a touch of geology intrigues you, this is your tour.

budapest city tour gratis

Absolutely, yes!

This tour is an excellent choice for those who are looking for something more niche and offbeat than your run-of-the-mill walking tour. It's an experience that leaves you both educated and intrigued.

  • 🕒 Duration: 1.5 hours
  • 💵 Cost: 13€
  • 🇬🇧 English: Varies by day, typically between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm

3. Best Jewish Quarter Walking Tour

budapest city tour gratis

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 2.5-hour English walking tour.

Immerse yourself in the rich Jewish heritage of Budapest on this enlightening tour.

The excursion not only offers a deep dive into the harrowing years of World War II but also presents a comprehensive history of Jewish life in Hungary dating back to medieval times.

As a Hungarian who supposedly knows this country, I still learned a lot of intriguing historical facts.

budapest city tour gratis

For history aficionados seeking more than just surface-level information, this tour is a goldmine.

The guide provides rigorous academic-level commentary , requiring a high level of English proficiency (unless you take the Spanish tour of course).

Notable landmarks include synagogues and poignant memorials dedicated to heroes who resisted Nazi and Arrow Cross Party oppression.

budapest city tour gratis

The tour kicks off at Imre Madách Square and concludes at Dohány Street Synagogue. The entire tour is outdoors and wheelchair-accessible, and it takes place in the Jewish Quarter (VII. District).

budapest city tour gratis

The tour was structured well to accommodate a medium-sized group (20-30 people), ensuring everyone could hear the guide clearly and see the landmarks.

budapest city tour gratis

Though the tour was generally excellent, the guide could have introduced himself more formally (as he just went straight into the material) and allowed pauses for absorption between his in-depth explanations (as his speech felt like speed-reading at times).

budapest city tour gratis

I highly recommend for history enthusiasts who appreciate a nuanced, detailed exploration of Jewish history in Budapest.

  • 🕒 Duration: 2.5 hours
  • 💵 Cost: " Free" (Suggested donation of 10-20€ at tour's end)
  • 🇬🇧 English: Typically at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm (Sundays only)
  • 🇪🇸 Spanish: Typically at 10:30 am and 5:00 pm
  • 👨‍👩‍👦 Family-Friendly: Not recommended (The tour is meant for adults)
  • ♿ Accessibility: Fully accessible for those with reduced mobility
  • 🗺️ Tour Area: Jewish Quarter (VII. District)
  • 📍 Starting Point: Madách Imre tér (Imre Madách Square)
  • 🏁 End Point: Dohány utcai Zsingagóga (Dohány Street Synagogue)
  • 🏰 Landmarks Visited: Sissi Statue, Rumbach Street Synagogue, Dohány Street Synagogue, Gozsdu Court, House of Theodore Herzl, Courtyard of Heroes, Carl Lutz Memorial, Angel of Budapest, Tree of Life, and an exterior visit to Kiraly Street & Ghetto Wall (Note: The tour only passes by these landmarks; there's no entry into the buildings)

🗺️ Meeting Point: Budapest, Madách Imre út 2, 1075 Hungary. Look for the yellow umbrella next to the Sissi statue. 🚌 Public Transport: Easily accessible from anywhere in the city by taking any metro line or trams 47/49 to Deak Ference square then walking to the Sissi statue. 🚶‍♂️ On Foot: The central areas of Budapest are highly walkable. You can comfortably reach our meeting spot with a 15-20 minute stroll from most central locations.

4. Best Budapest Inner City Walking Tour

budapest city tour gratis

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 2.25-hour English walking tour.

This walking tour is a perfect way to get an overview of Budapest's history , taking place in the inner district of Pest.

You'll gain insights into our past, including the troubled times during the Soviet era , the period after the fall of the Berlin Wall which we call "The System Change," and even contemporary history and controversies.

budapest city tour gratis

For first-time visitors seeking a comprehensive introduction to Budapest's rich history, this tour is an ideal choice. The tour offers not just historical accuracy but also local insights, thanks to our Hungarian guide.

budapest city tour gratis

The meeting location is at Kossuth Square by the Hungarian Parliament. More precisely, it’s near the M2 metro and/or tram station . The tour is wheelchair-friendly and welcomes those with mobility challenges. The tour concludes at Vigadó Square.

budapest city tour gratis

We were among about 30 participants . Despite being a larger group, it didn’t take away from the enjoyment or educational value of the tour. I even struck up some pleasant conversations with fellow tour mates.

budapest city tour gratis

The only minor issue was that the tour guide was not a native English speaker . However, her genuine local Hungarian perspective more than made up for this.

budapest city tour gratis

You know the answer already — yes! Especially if you're a first-time visitor wanting a rich, historical overview of Budapest, you'll find this tour worthwhile.

  • 🕒 Duration: 2.25 hours
  • 🇬🇧 English: Typically at 10:00 am
  • 🇪🇸 Spanish: Typically at 10:00 am,11:30 am and 5:00 pm
  • 👨‍👩‍👦 Family-Friendly: Yes, offers a well-rounded historical overview suitable for all ages
  • 🗺️ Tour Area: Delving into the heart of Pest (V. District)
  • 📍 Starting Point: Hungarian Parliament (Hungarian Parliament)
  • 🏁 End Point: Vigadó tér (Vigadó Square)
  • 🏰 Landmarks Visited: The tour starts at the Hungarian Parliament and takes you through an exploration of the Communist era and the 1956 revolution, Liberty Square, the Monument to Soviet Heroes, the Monument to the Victims of the German Invasion, the Chain Bridge, the Danube Riverbank with views of Buda’s city panorama, St. Stephen's Basilica, Queen Sisi Square, Vorosmarty Square, and concludes at Vigadó Square (Note: The tour only passes by these landmarks; there's no entry into the buildings)

🗺️ Meeting Point: Gather at Kossuth Lajos square , between right next to the tram stop. Look for an orange umbrella. 🚌 Public Transport: Take metro or tram line 2 and take a brief walk to the meeting point. 🚶‍♂️ On Foot: The central areas of Budapest are highly walkable. You can comfortably reach our meeting spot with a 15-20 minute stroll from most central locations.

5. Best Buda Castle District Walking Tour

budapest city tour gratis

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 2-hour English walking tour.

Discover the architectural and historical gems in Budapest's Castle District with this straightforward yet thoroughly engaging walking tour. This tour offers a factual and no-nonsense overview of the district's landmarks, perfect for those wanting a solid introduction to Hungary's storied past.

budapest city tour gratis

The tour offers an enriching walk through the charming cobblestone streets of the Castle District, covering major landmarks like the Royal Palace ("Buda Castle"), Matthias Church, and Fisherman's Bastion.

What stands out is the tour's commitment to factual storytelling, devoid of the supernatural or fantastical elements you might find on other tours.

budapest city tour gratis

The tour kicks off at Trinity Square , right in front of the iconic Trinity Statue. Plus, the entire tour is wheelchair accessible, making it convenient for everyone

budapest city tour gratis

With a group of roughly 25 people, it was easy to move around and the tour never felt overcrowded.

budapest city tour gratis

The tour delivers what it promises: a comprehensive, factual overview. However, prepare yourself for the elements—like heat, if you happen to visit during a hot spell like I did. 😅

budapest city tour gratis

Certainly. If you're looking for a straightforward, facts-based exploration of Budapest's Castle District, this tour fits the bill.

  • 💵 Cost: 10€
  • 🇬🇧 English: Starts at 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm
  • 🇮🇹 Italian: Starts at 10:00 am (Weekends only)
  • 🇫🇷 French: Available for private group tours only
  • 🇩🇪 German: Available for private group tours only
  • 🏁 End Point: Szentháromság tér (Trinity Square)
  • 🏰 Landmarks Visited: Royal Palace ("Buda Castle"), Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, and everything in between (Note: The tour only passes by these landmarks; there's no entry into the buildings)

6. Grand City Tour of Budapest

budapest city tour gratis

💡 Note: This review is based on my personal experience of a 3-hour English walking tour.

Embark on a comprehensive 3-hour tour of Budapest, encapsulating both the Pest and Buda sides of the iconic city.

With a blend of air-conditioned bus rides and leisurely walking, you'll have the chance to witness major landmarks, from Heroes' Square to the Castle District while learning of their history.

budapest city tour gratis

Though it provides a sweeping view, be prepared for a surface-level overview that touches upon, but does not delve deeply into, each individual area.

budapest city tour gratis

The tour gave me a bird's eye view of Budapest . It kicked off with a brief but informative stop at Heroes' Square and proceeded to drive past local landmarks like the Opera House, Városliget and Keleti Railway Station.

What sets this tour apart is its unique approach to ascending the Castle Hill — coming up from the side opposite the Danube, a welcome change from typical tours.

budapest city tour gratis

The journey begins at Clark Ádám Square , located at the base of Buda Hill. From here, you'll embark on a 5-10 minute ascent up the hill's stairs. A word of caution: the tour is not suitable for mobility-impaired individuals.

budapest city tour gratis

The tour was structured well to accommodate a medium-sized group, ensuring everyone could hear the guide clearly and see the landmarks.

budapest city tour gratis

While the tour was extensive, it left me wanting more , especially when it came to exploring the Pest side.

The quick stop at Heroess' Square and drive-by sightings don't do justice to the richness of the landmarks.

However, the air-conditioned bus was a welcome respite from the sweltering heat. The Castle District tour was spectacular though.

budapest city tour gratis

If you are time-constrained but still want a quick overview of Budapest, this tour fits the bill. For those looking for a more detailed exploration, consider setting aside a full day.

  • 🕒 Duration: 3 hours
  • 💵 Cost: 29€
  • 🇬🇧 English: Starts at 10:00 am
  • 🇮🇹 Spanish: Starts at 10:00 am
  • 🇩🇪 German: Starts at 10:00 am
  • ♿ Accessibility: Regrettably, the tour is not wheelchair-friendly due to bus inaccessibility and staircases in the Castle District.
  • 🗺️ Tour Area: Begins at Heroes Square (15 mins), transitions into a hop-on, hop-off style tour of Pest, and culminates in an in-depth exploration of the Castle District.
  • 📍 Starting Point: Cityrama & Gray Line Travel Agency, Báthory utca 19, Budapest 1054

Places worth seeing in Budapest

Budapest is the capital and largest city of Hungary, and one of the most beautiful places in the country. It lies in its northern part, on the Danube – the second longest river in Europe. The city’s rich history dates back to the early Middle Ages, and although World War II left its mark on the city, many historic buildings can still be seen here. Budapest is famous for its numerous attractions, visited by tourists from all over the world. You will find centuries-old churches and monuments, museums full of great exhibits and impressive palaces.

One of Budapest’s major attractions is the huge Royal Castle. Its oldest parts date back to the 14th century. The Castle Hill, where the building rises, can be reached on foot or by the historic 19th century funicular railway. It is the oldest operating facility of its kind in the world. The castle itself now houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. It is definitely worth a visit. The dome that crowns the building is also open to tourists. It offers an amazing view of Budapest. If you are interested, you can also visit the caves below the hill.

Budapest – tourist attractions

The Royal Castle is not the only monument worth seeing when visiting Budapest. It is not even the only castle in the city! Indeed, in Városliget Park, on the so-called Széchenyi Island, you will find Vajdahunyad Castle. Its unusual style, a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, will delight all lovers of architecture. Interestingly, its individual elements are copies of the most beautiful monuments from around the country.

The Hungarian capital is also home to many magnificent churches – including St Stephen’s Basilica, Budapest’s largest church and one of the tallest buildings in the entire country. It is crowned by a 96-metre high dome decorated with beautiful mosaics. From here you also have a wonderful view of the city. Also noteworthy is the historic Calvinist church in the Víziváros district. It is a neo-Gothic building with a characteristic soaring tower measuring more than 60 metres. One of the symbols of Budapest is the so-called Matthias Church. Parts of the original building from the turn of the 14th century – including the main portal – have been preserved to this day. For many centuries, until 1916, the coronations of Hungarian kings took place here.

The Fisherman’s Tower in Budapest is also worth a visit. It is one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. This neo-Romanesque building was erected on the site of the former castle walls. Nowadays, its numerous towers and terraces overlook the Danube and the buildings on its left bank. The tower is located next to the already mentioned Matthias Church. When visiting Budapest, you should also not miss its most important symbol: the imposing parliament building. It is one of the largest – and most beautiful – buildings of its kind in the world. It towers directly over the Danube, so you can also admire it on a river cruise.

When in Budapest, it’s also worth heading to the Jewish Quarter, which has a special atmosphere and ambience. Here you will find the largest synagogue in Europe with a capacity of almost 3,000 people! About 80,000 Jews live here, people from various backgrounds: Hasidic, Conservative, Reform and non-religious. The Jewish Quarter is also one of the most popular areas of Budapest among the locals. It is the centre of the city’s nightlife with numerous cafes, restaurants and galleries!

My group really enjoyed the amount of history explained in the tour, it was a nice way to get a lot of information on several of the key sites in the center of Paris in a compact amount of time. Excellent for orientation and background. I would certainly do other tours in the future.

Table of Contents

Which train service should you choose for your rome to florence journey.

Both Trenitalia and ItaloTreno operate high-speed trains between Rome and Florence , offering passengers the unique experience of riding an Italian high-speed train. Understanding the Difference Between Trenitalia and ItaloTreno

You might hear the names Trenitalia and Ferrovie dello Stato used interchangeably. That’s because Trenitalia is part of a larger group, Ferrovie dello Stato, which has been operational since 1905 and holds the distinction of being Italy’s oldest active railway company.

Trenitalia's high-speed train

Trenitalia’s offerings extend beyond high-speed trains. They also operate local ( Regionali ) and long-distance ( Intercity ) trains.

So, if your travel plans include smaller cities or secondary stations, Trenitalia or its partners in the Ferrovie dello Stato group might be your go-to choice.

In contrast, ItaloTreno , established in 2006 , is Italy’s first private company to compete with Trenitalia/Ferrovie dello Stato in the high-speed rail network . Until recently, ItaloTreno’s services were limited to routes with high-speed railway lines.

Italo's high-speed train

However, to broaden their reach, Italo purchased a bus company, Itabus , in 2023. This move allows them to offer combined tickets to places not accessible by high-speed trains.

Both Trenitalia and ItaloTreno are committed to providing quality services, making either a solid choice for your transportation needs.

What’s the Train Travel Time from Rome to Florence?

The length of a train ride from Rome to Florence can vary considerably, depending on the type of service you choose.

For the fastest option , hop on a high-speed train. This will get you from Rome (either from Rome Termini or Rome Tiburtina) to Florence (either to Firenze S.M.N or Firenze Campo di Marte) in about 1.5 hours , and usually without any stops in between.

In need of accommodation in Florence? Check out our recommendations here .

If you’re not in a rush and wish to take in the scenic Italian countryside, you might opt for a local Regionale train . Though this journey can take over 4 hours due to numerous stops at charming intermediate stations like Orte, Attigliano-Bomarzo, Alviano, Orvieto, and more, it can provide a unique travel experience.

Lastly, the Intercity train offers a balance between speed and sightseeing. While it does make stops at some key cities along the way, you’ll arrive in Florence in roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes .

What are the main railway stations in Rome?

The primary railway station in Rome is Roma Termini , but there are also many train options from Roma Tiburtina station.

What are the main railway stations in Florence?

The primary railway station in Florence is Firenze Santa Maria Novella , often abbreviated to Firenze S.M.N. . There are also many train options from the Firenze Campo di Marte station, located near the current Florence stadium.

What’s the price range for a train journey from Rome to Florence?

If you’re traveling by high-speed train from Rome to Florence, ticket prices generally hover around 50 euros for second class , escalate to about 86 euros for Business Class , and peak at around 145 euros for the plush comforts of Executive Class .

But here’s an insider tip: You can snag substantial savings if you book your tickets online in advance!

Train companies frequently launch enticing promotional deals, sometimes offering high-speed tickets for a mere 20 euros in second class. There have even been lucky travelers who’ve nabbed them for an unbeatable 9.90 euros!

Just to illustrate, you can see promotional fares starting from 19.90 euros in Smart (2nd class) on the Italo website below. This snapshot was taken from a search performed on July 12, 2023, for a journey scheduled on July 21, 2023.

Rome to Florence by Train

One word of caution before you proceed with your booking: Do scrutinize the ticket conditions. Promotional tickets, while cheaper, typically come with rigid terms, often not allowing changes or offering refunds in case of cancellation.

Full-fare tickets, though pricier, usually offer more flexibility if you need to adjust your travel time or date. Some may even offer a partial refund if you find yourself needing to cancel before the train’s departure. With promotional fares, in most scenarios, if you don’t board the train, you’ll have to say goodbye to the full ticket value.

When should I book a train trip from Rome to Florence?

There are plenty of trains running from Rome to Florence daily, so if you’re at Rome’s primary station, Roma Termini , chances are you’ll find a Florence-bound train departing within the next few hours.

However, buying your ticket just before departure typically means paying full fare, and if you’re traveling with others, there’s no guarantee you’ll find seats together.

Some of the automatic ticket machines at Roma Termini station (there are automatic ticket machines for both Trenitalia and Italo)

Larger stations are equipped with both manned ticket counters and automated ticket machines. At smaller stations, you might only find automated machines, which, unfortunately, aren’t always operational. In such cases, you’re better off purchasing tickets online from the train company’s website or their mobile app.

For better rates and assured seating, consider booking your ticket online between three months and three days before your journey. There’s no need to book more than three months ahead. Indeed, if you search for a ticket a year in advance, you won’t find any availability as train companies don’t release tickets that far in advance.

At the Florence railway station, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, there are also automatic ticket machines as well as manned ticket counters

Interestingly, if you’re planning an event or traveling with a large group, it’s possible to reserve an entire train carriage. For such bookings, it’s advisable to engage a ticket sales agency and book as far in advance as possible.

How many pieces of luggage can I bring on a train journey from Rome to Florence?

Before booking your tickets, it’s essential to thoroughly review all conditions of the journey as they are subject to change without notice.

In most cases, those traveling from Rome to Florence by train have no restrictions on the quantity or size of luggage they can bring (except in Italo’s Smart class = 2nd class), making train travel particularly convenient compared to airlines that often enforce strict weight, size, and quantity limitations.

Carriages typically offer luggage spaces near the entrance, as well as overhead compartments or spaces between seats in some cases.

Should you choose to place your luggage in the common areas at the entrance of the carriage, we recommend remaining nearby until the train leaves the station for security purposes. If the journey includes intermediate stops, it would be wise to ensure no one inadvertently or intentionally takes your bags.

Though infrequent, incidents of passengers mistakenly taking someone else’s luggage or unauthorized individuals boarding the train and removing bags during a stop do occur. If you find yourself in such a situation, alert the train staff immediately.

Luggage with Italo Treno: How does it work?

If you’re planning to travel from Rome to Florence with Italo Treno, it’s crucial to understand their luggage policies for a smooth journey. You can bring personal belongings and items that are easily transportable on the train, provided they’re placed in the designated spaces onboard.

Luggage shouldn’t exceed the dimensions of 75x53x30 cm in the Smart environment (for other classes, there are no size restrictions, and you can carry XXL bags as long as they fit in the luggage compartments).

Strollers, wheelchairs, and foldable bicycles are considered luggage, but they must be stored with the frame properly folded in the appropriate spaces.

It’s important to note that the transportation of bulky luggage, large objects, or traditional bicycles isn’t allowed. Additionally, your bags should have a clear and legible indication of your name and address.

You must ensure your luggage is adequately accommodated so as not to pose a risk or damage to objects, people, and animals, and it should not obstruct the train’s entrance and exit, circulation within the carriage, or the onboard service operations.

Carrying items that could cause damage, disturbances, or inconvenience to other passengers, as well as dangerous or harmful substances or items, is prohibited. Weapons and ammunition are strictly forbidden, except for security forces onboard the train servicing ITALO.

As a passenger, you are responsible for safeguarding your luggage and the objects you bring with you. In case of non-compliance with these rules, you will be required to remove such objects at the first stop and may be subject to a fine.

Finally, the passenger must allow the ITALO team to carry out the necessary checks to ensure that the transportation of luggage complies with these rules.

For more details, read the transport contract (page 19):

Luggage with Trenitalia: How does it work?

In Trenitalia’s general transport conditions, there’s a chapter dedicated to luggage transportation. It states that the company allows passengers to carry luggage and other easily transportable objects free of charge, including strollers, umbrellas, beach chairs, skis, musical instruments, etc., provided they are placed in dedicated spaces within the train.

Luggage exceeding the permitted volume is tolerated as long as it does not cause inconvenience or harm to other passengers, interfere with the train staff’s service activities, or damage the carriages.

The company prohibits the transport of malodorous substances that may disturb other passengers, as well as dangerous or harmful substances. However, materials or equipment that include hazardous accessories in their structure or operation circuit are allowed, provided all measures are taken to prevent any leakage during transport.

Bicycles can be transported free of charge on all trains, provided they are disassembled and stored in a bag or if they are foldable bicycles. The transportation of assembled bicycles is only allowed on certain Intercity trains, and a ticket must be purchased for this purpose.

The free transportation of wheelchairs, whether owned by the passenger or provided by the Italian Railway Network (RFI), is allowed on trains equipped with a specialized carriage or suitable compartment.

Passengers are always responsible for their own luggage and other transported items. Trenitalia may inspect any unattended hand luggage, including its contents, and destroy it if necessary for passenger safety and train operation. The company may also verify that the luggage and its contents are in accordance with transport rules.

How to Travel from Rome to Florence by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

travel rome to florence by train

TripSavvy /  Hilary Allison

Rome and Florence are two of Italy's most historic cities, separated by several centuries and 174 miles. The ruins of Rome hark back to its days as the then-capital of civilization over 2,000 years ago, while Florence flourished much later as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Both cities boast art, churches, history, and cuisine unlike anywhere else in the world, and a visit to both is standard for most travelers coming to Italy .

Thankfully, Rome and Florence are easily connected by the train and you can reach one from the other in under two hours. The bus takes more than twice as long, but it's the cheapest way to move between them. A car is fun to explore the Tuscan countryside and for day trips, but it's a headache to have in the city. There are also direct flights, but they're pricey and end up taking longer than the train.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Rome to Florence?

Travelers on a budget can use the bus for travel to Florence for dirt cheap prices on FlixBus , sometimes for as low as $10. It takes about two to three hours longer than the train, but it's a viable option when euros are running short, especially for last-minute plans. Trains and buses both go up in price as your travel date gets closer, but if you're flexible with your departure time, you can often find bus tickets for under $20 even for same-day trips.

Buses leave Rome from Tiburtina station and arrive in Florence at Villa Costanza, which is about 25 minutes outside of the city center and accessible via the local tram, which takes passengers to the main train station. The tram only runs from 5:30 a.m. until midnight, so think twice before booking a late-night bus that arrives in Florence in the early morning or you may be stuck hiring a taxi, totally negating your savings by using the bus.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Rome to Florence?

The easiest way to travel around Italy is, without a doubt, the train, especially when traveling between major cities like Rome and Florence. Trains are comfortable, fast, and affordable—especially when booked with advance notice—and are the transport of choice for locals and visitors alike.

You can reserve a train through Italy's state-run rail service, Trenitalia , or the privately owned Italo . Both companies are comparable in price and comfort, so look at tickets on both websites before making your purchase. You can also use RailEurope to compare the two companies on one website, although RailEurope charges a small commission when checking out. Less expensive regional trains are also an option, but they take two to four hours and do not have reserved seats.

Trenitalia trains leave from Termini and Tiburtina stations in Rome, while Italo trains depart from Tiburtina and Ostiense stations. If you're staying in Rome near Termini or Ostiense, choose the respective company that serves that station in order to avoid crossing the entire city with all of your luggage.

All trains arrive in Florence Santa Maria Novella Station —sometimes written as "Firenze SMN"—the main station of the Tuscan capital. This accessible city is easily traversed on foot, although taxis are allowed to enter the car-free city center if you need to haul luggage to your hotel.

How Long Does It Take to Drive?

You won't need a car in Florence, and in fact, you can't even bring your vehicle into the historic city center, so having a car can actually be more of a headache than it's worth. Plus, trying to get out of the madness of Rome in a car is every driver's worst nightmare. When you add up the costs of the rental, gas, and tolls on Italy's autostrada highways, driving isn't very cost-effective either.

Despite the inconveniences, the journey from Rome to Florence is a beautiful one, passing through the rich countryside of Umbria and Tuscany. And even though you can enjoy the same scenery from the window of a train or bus, only a car gives you the flexibility to stop in the charming Italian villages you'll pass along the way to enjoy a hearty lunch and a local Chianti wine. You can also take day trips from Florence if you have your own vehicle, such as to nearby Pisa with its famous leaning tower or Siena .

How Long Is the Flight?

Direct flights by Alitalia get you from Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) in Rome to Florence Airport (FLR) in under an hour, but the total travel time taking into account transport to the airport, checking in, going through security, and waiting at the gate is actually much longer. The train is clearly the winner in terms of transport, taking only 30 minutes more but shuttling passengers directly from city center to city center. Plus, low-cost airlines don't fly to Florence, so in addition to being more of a hassle, the flight is also significantly more expensive.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Florence?

Florence is one of those cities that seems to be always packed with tourists, so the best time to visit is really a question of visiting when the city is busy or very busy . Late spring to early fall is the high season, especially the summer months when it's full of study abroad students and the temperatures are uncomfortably hot. Winter and early spring are when there are fewer tourists but the weather is more likely to be cold and rainy. To balance out crowds with the climate, aim for a trip in March or April, making sure to avoid the week leading up to Easter when most schools are on break.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

The easiest way to travel from the airport to Florence is via the Volainbus, which shuttles passengers directly to the Florence Train Station. Since only taxis are allowed in the historic center, you'll need to take a cab if you want door-to-door service. The taxi fare from the airport is a set price that varies based on the time of day, but it starts at 22 euros—or about $26—for daytime rides, plus a small supplement for pieces of luggage.

What Is There to Do in Florence?

Lovers of art, history, food, wine, culture, and shopping all have something to enjoy in Florence. The local cathedral, or Duomo , is one of the most impressive in all of Italy with its bright pink and green facade and massive brick dome. The Ponte Vecchio , or Old Bridge, is the only remaining bridge from Florence's medieval days, offering unbeatable views of the city along the Arno River. The Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell'Accademia are two of the most important art museums in Europe, the latter of which is home to Michaelangelo's "David" . Travelers who love to shop will have plenty to keep themselves busy with while in Florence, from street stalls selling local handicrafts and genuine leather to high-end designer products, such as the original Gucci store. Apart from renowned Tuscan wines, other local items to try include artichoke panini, any kind of gelato, and the mouthwatering Florentine steak.

The fastest way to get from Rome to Florence is to take the high-speed train. It takes only 1.5 hours to get from the center of Rome to the center of Florence. Any other way of traveling between the cities will take you at least twice as long.High-speed trains run about every 20-30 minutes throughout the day from about 6am to 9pm.There are 2 types of trains between Rome and Florence: high-speed trains and regular trains. High-speed trains cover the distance of 300 km between the cities in 1.5 hours. They do not stop anywhere, stopping only in Rome and Florence. Regular trains, on the other hand, are slower and stop frequently. Because of this, the travel time stretches for 3-4 hours.I always choose only high-speed trains, Since I bought the tickets on the day of the trip, I paid 20€ for the regular train instead of 40€ for the high-speed train. And even though I saved money, the train took twice as long to get there, so I was a bit wrinkled all day. And I won’t talk about the comfort level. So you need to decide what is more important for you – time or money.

Wow, you have done an amazing job of providing a comprehensive and engaging guide for exploring Rome and Florence. The FCO station connects frequently with central Rome with a few options, and from Rome, you can get anywhere else in Italy, including Florence. The Rome-to-Florence route is popular, and likely the first train ride you will take from the moment you land in Italy.

Frequent Trains from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Florence

Upon arrival at Fiumicino, you can choose either the Leonardo Express , a Regionale FL1 train, or a high-speed Alta Velocità (AV) train. The AV train is ideal if you’re not planning to spend any time in Rome and want to get straight on to Florence from the airport .

The AV trains are Frecciargento , the mid-range of the AV line, which leaves from FCO twice per day, at 11:08 a.m. and 3:08 p.m. They do stop along the way in Rome, but you don’t need to change trains. This trip takes 2 hours and 24 minutes, and ticket prices range from $28-34.

There are many more trains that will get you from FCO to Florence each day, but these require a train change in Rome. The Leonardo Express offers non-stop service all the way to Roma Termini  station. This trip takes 32 minutes, and the trains leave the airport every 15-30 minutes throughout the day. The FL1 trains connect the airport with other stations in Rome, including Tiburtina and Ostiense. These are commuter trains, therefore they make more stops en route, but the trip is still just over 30 minutes. The first trains bound for Rome from FCO leave the airport at 5:57 a.m., the last at 7:57 p.m. Ticket prices from FCO-Rome range from $17-21.

Once in Rome, you can take a direct Trenitalia AV train from Roma Termini to Firenze Santa Maria Novella  (abbreviated to SM Novella). This 143.5 mile (231 km) distance is covered in as little as 1.5 hours. Some of the AV trains also depart from Roma Tiburtina, which cuts ten minutes off the journey time. There are 68 trains on this route from Termini alone per day. The first train leaves Termini for Florence at 6:20 a.m., the last at 8:50 p.m., and ticket prices range from $20-50 on this route.

Italo trains leave from Roma Ostiense for SM Novella. This trip takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and there are seven departures per day.

Note that weekends and holidays typically mean less frequent service and sometimes longer travel times.

Direct Trains from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Florence

As mentioned, there are only two direct trains from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Florence each day, and those are Frecciargento trains. These leave the airport at 11:08 a.m. and 3:08 p.m. All other trains will require a change en route at one of the train stations in Rome.

Train amenities

The typical train for this route are all equipped with air-conditioning and power outlets in your seat for your convenience. There are both 1st-class and 2nd-class cars. First class passengers get a free drink and a choice of newspaper. A cafe car is available to all passengers.

Rome Fiumicino Airport, Rome, and Florence Train Stations

The airport’s train station is called Fiumicino Aeroporto which is located inside the Fiumicino Airport. The station is opposite of Terminal 1, and if you did not land at Terminal 1, there is a free shuttle connecting all the terminals.  There is another station named Fiumicino in a nearby town, so make sure not to get the stations confused!

Rome's Termini is the city's largest station, and also a major transportation hub within Rome. Many bus lines stop right outside the station, and there is a Metro station inside Termini.

Roma Tiburtina and Roma Ostiense are also connected to the city's Metro system, and are both served by a number of city buses.

Florence's Santa Maria Novella , is the city’s main train station. It is close to the historic center, and is a major hub for city and regional buses, making it easy to get to and from the station if you're traveling light.

Considering Taking a Day Trip from Rome to Florence?

I’ll cover everything from the best ways to get to Florence from Rome to what to see and do in Florence. I’ll also give you some tips on making the most of your day trip and avoiding crowds.

So whether you’re a first-time visitor to Italy or a seasoned traveler, read on for all the info you need to plan your perfect day trip from Rome to Florence!

How to get from Rome to Florence: The Best Ways

There are many reasons to visit Rome , but once you have explored for a few days, it’s not a bad idea to head out beyond the Eternal City. Let’s jump into the best ways to get from Rome to Florence for a day trip.

1. High-speed train

Several train companies offer direct services between the two cities, and the journey takes about 1 hour and a half.

I recommend you buy tickets online to save time and hassle in the morning, as seats can fill up during peak seasons. You can also grab your tickets at the train station if you forget.

Cost: €15 –  €30 each way for an express train

Duration: 1 hr 30mins one way

Departure: Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina.

Arrival: Santa Maria Novella Station.

Several train companies offer direct express services between the two cities, including Trenitalia and Italo. You can take a local train to save a few euros but it will extend your trip to 3-4 hours.

The most popular train stations for departures to Florence that are close to most Rome hotels are Roma Termini and Roma Tiburtina . And good news, in Florence, you will arrive at Santa Maria Novella Station which is in the heart of the city. Most places are easily accessible by walking.

Essential Train Tips

  • Validate your ticket before boarding to avoid fines
  • Beware of pickpockets
  • Even with the EuroRail or InterRail pass, you will need to make a reservation, which will cost you $10. You can easily book this on the ItaliaRail booking site

2. Book a small group guided tour

I find tours a great way to have a break from the stress of travel logistics. You can simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey. Many tours include free pick-up and drop-off to your accommodation in Rome and take about 12 hours round trip.

You will have the extra benefit of learning about the destination from your knowledgeable tour guide. Prices usually start around $115 USD per person and go up from there.

So if you want to skip the fuss, and see the top sights of Florence and possibly a second destination, taking a guided tour is for you!

Favorite Guided Tours – Rome to Florence

  • Rome to Florence with Pisa via GetYourGuide
  • Rome to Florence and Pisa with a Small Group via Viator
  • Rome to Florence Private Tour by High Speed Train via Tours by Locals
  • Florence Day Trip from Rome via WithLocals

Travel through the picturesque Tuscan countryside in a comfortable minivan, and enjoy the personalized attention of a small-group tour. This is a great way to see some of Italy’s most iconic landmarks in one day. Plus if you are a solo traveler like I often am, this is a great way to meet others!

On a tour of Florence, you’ll see artistic masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Gallery and walk beneath Brunelleschi’s famous dome.

If you book a tour that adds on Pisa, you’ll marvel at the stately marble treasures of Piazza dei Miracoli, including the iconic Leaning Tower.

Guided tour essential tips

  • Be flexible. Things don’t always go according to plan or according to your preferences so it’s important to be flexible when you’re on a guided tour
  • Ask questions . If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask your tour guide.
  • Don’t be late! This goes for pick up and whenever you are allocated some free time for exploring. If you are late back to the bus, you may just lose your ride!

3. Scenic Self-Drive

Self-driving from Rome to Florence is a great way to see the Italian countryside and have the freedom to explore at your own pace. The drive takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes via the A1 highway, and the scenery is stunning. Expect to pay costs for the rental car, gasoline, and parking.

There are a few things to keep in mind if you’re planning on self-driving from Rome to Florence.

First, you’ll need to make sure that you have a valid driver’s license and that your travel insurance covers your rental car.

Second, you’ll need to be familiar with the Italian road rules.

And third, you’ll need to be prepared for traffic, especially during the peak season.

When it comes to parking in Florence, it is pretty limited. There are a few street parking spots available in the city center, but they are metered and have time limits. Some park-and-ride lots are located outside the city center and are great for avoiding the hassle of paying and having to move your car.

Another good option is a parking garage in the city center, but they fill up quickly. If you’re planning on parking in a garage, be sure to book your spot in advance.

IMPORTANT: Be aware of the ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato). This is a restricted traffic zone in the city center that is only accessible to residents and authorized vehicles. Those who enter the ZTL without a permit, aka with your rental car, will be fined.

If you’re up for a challenge, self-driving from Rome to Florence is a great way to see the best of Italy.

Essential Self-Drive Tips

  • Start your drive early and avoid leaving during the afternoon rush. Traffic can be heavy, especially during the summer months.
  • Take breaks. The drive from Rome to Florence is long, so it’s important to take breaks. Get out of the car and stretch your legs every few hours.
  • Plan your route, There are a few different routes you can take from Rome to Florence. The most direct route is via the A1 highway. However, there are also some scenic routes that you can take if you have more time.
  • Make sure you fill up! Fill your car with petrol in Rome as it is more expensive in Florence.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for directions.

How to get from Rome to Florence: The Worst Ways

Moving onto, in my opinion, the worst ways to get from Rome to Florence for a day trip.

Flying from Rome to Florence for a day trip is possible, but it is NOT recommended.

The flight time is only about 1 hour from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci Airport, but you will need to factor in the time it takes to get to and from the airports, as well as the security checks. This means that you will only have about 4-5 hours in Florence, which is not enough time to see the city properly.

I will always opt for a train over a plane, and here’s why:

  • You can get up and walk around on a train
  • A train is much more scenic
  • Avoid long lines and security at the airport
  • It is often cheaper and faster (flights are typically $120 more or less)

If you are determined to fly from Rome to Florence for a day trip, I recommend you book your flights early. This will help you to get the best prices and the most convenient flight times.

But again I wouldn’t recommend flying for a day trip.

5. Catch a Taxi

Catching a taxi from Rome to Florence is possible, but it is not the most recommended way to travel between the two cities.

The taxi fare will be quite pricey (about $400-500 each way), and the journey will take about 2 hours.

Catching a taxi can be convenient, but it is not the most flexible option. You will be limited to the taxi driver’s schedule.

Essential Taxi Tips

  • Book your taxi in advance . This will help you to guarantee a taxi and get a better price.
  • Be prepared to pay a high fare . The taxi fare will be very expensive, so be prepared to pay a lot of money.
  • Be aware of the traffic . The traffic can be heavy, so be prepared for the journey to take longer than 2 hours.
  • Have a backup plan . If you are unable to catch a taxi, you can consider taking the train or the bus.

6. Taking the Bus

If you’re on a tight budget for your European adventure, you can take a bus to Florence. The bus journey takes a little longer (about three to four hours), but it’s cheaper than the train, albeit not as comfortable. Tickets cost as little as 5 euros.

Buses depart every hour from Rome (Roma, Autostazione Tiburtina) heading to Florence, Villa Costanza Tram T1. If you choose this, you will want to catch a very early bus to make the most of your day. And remember, buses can be unreliable and are dependent on traffic conditions.

Personally, I would recommend you stick with the train, it is worth the extra few euros for a quicker, more comfortable journey that leaves you ample time to explore Florence.

Essential tips for taking the bus

  • Book your tickets in advance. This will help you to guarantee a seat and get a better price.
  • Be aware of the traffic . The traffic can be heavy, so be prepared for the journey to take longer than expected.
  • Have a backup plan. If you are unable to get a bus ticket, you can consider taking the train.

What to Do on a Day Trip to Florence from Rome

To help you plan an efficient day trip from Rome to Florence here is my recommended itinerary!

Early Morning Start

Rise and shine it’s time to head to Florence!

Catch an early morning train from Rome to Florence, aiming to arrive in Florence by mid-morning. Trains depart from Rome’s Termini station usually starting at 5 am or 6 am and arrive at Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station.

Or wait for your tour guide to swing by and pick you up if you choose that route!

1. Visit the Florence Cathedral (Duomo)

Start your day in Florence by heading to the signature Florence Cathedral, also known as the Duomo. Marvel at its stunning architecture and consider climbing to the top of the dome for panoramic views of the city.

2. Explore Piazza della Signoria

Walk to Piazza della Signoria , a historic square known for its impressive sculptures and beautiful architecture. Take some time to admire the iconic Palazzo Vecchio and the outdoor sculpture gallery.

3. Uffizi Gallery

Next, visit the Uffizi Gallery, one of the world’s most renowned art museums. Explore its extensive collection of Renaissance masterpieces, including works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. I suggest booking tickets in advance to skip the line .

4. Ponte Vecchio

Take a short stroll to the Ponte Vecchio, a famous bridge spanning the Arno River. Enjoy the picturesque views and explore the jewelry shops that line the bridge. The Arno River is a wonderful place to take gorgeous photos of the city!

Take a break for lunch and enjoy some traditional Tuscan cuisine. Look for local trattorias or restaurants offering dishes like bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak) or handmade pasta.

5. Accademia Gallery (Optional)

If you have time and are interested in seeing Michelangelo’s David , consider visiting the Accademia Gallery . The museum houses this iconic sculpture along with other works of art.

Note that this visit may require additional time, so factor that into your itinerary!

6. Wander through Florence

Take some time to wander through the streets of Florence’s historic center, soaking in the charming atmosphere and admiring the beautiful architecture. Explore the narrow alleys and discover hidden gems along the way.

7. Gelato and Shopping

Treat yourself to some authentic Italian gelato from one of the gelaterias in Florence. Indulge in the delicious flavors as you continue exploring the city.

If you’re interested in retail therapy, browse the local boutiques for leather goods and other unique souvenirs.

Time to head back to Rome ☹️

That’s a wrap!

If you’re catching the train, head back to the Santa Maria Novella station and catch an evening train back to Rome. Ensure you have enough time to reach the station from your last destination in Florence.

Remember to adjust this itinerary based on your specific interests, time constraints, and the operating hours of the attractions you wish to visit.

While it’s a jam-packed day, it allows you to experience some of Florence’s highlights and immerse yourself in its rich cultural heritage.

Essential Tips: Rome to Florence Day Trip

Here are some essential tips to make the most of your Rome to Florence day trip.

Plan in Advance

Researching ahead of time is key to making the most of your limited time in Florence. Identify the attractions and landmarks you want to visit, strategically plan your itinerary, and consider pre-booking tickets for popular museums and galleries to skip the queues.

Get a head start

Start your day trip from Rome to Florence bright and early to maximize your day. If you are catching a train, first trains usually depart around 5:00 or 6:00 a.m., allowing you to arrive in Florence by mid-morning.

If you opt for a guided tour you can expect to start at around 7:00 a.m.

Comfort over style

Florence is a city best explored on foot. Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking all day. I suggest you wear your favorite pair of white sneakers or your flat leather boots . Save your Birkenstocks and strappy wedges for another day.

Make a priority list of the must-see attractions in Florence, such as the Florence Cathedral (Duomo), Ponte Vecchio, and Piazza della Signoria . Focus on ticking off these spots but allow yourself time and flexibility to get lost in exploring hidden gems.

Switch it up and take a guided tour

Consider joining a guided tour or renting an audio guide to learn more about the city’s history and art. By doing so you gain even more insight into the captivating city of Florence.

Reserve your Tuscan feast

If you have specific restaurants in mind, make lunch reservations in advance to avoid wasting time waiting in line. Florence offers a variety of delicious Tuscan cuisine, so take the opportunity to savor local dishes and rest your feet.

Manage your time

Watch the time as you get lost in cobblestone streets and wander through museums. Allocate enough time to visit the major attractions and wander through the charming alleyways. Trust me, it’s easy to lose track of time.

Treat yourself to some local products

Florence is renowned for its leather goods, handmade paper, and artisanal products. Leave some time for shopping and pick up unique souvenirs to remember your trip.

Plan your trip home

If you opt for the train, check the train schedule for your return journey to Rome and ensure you have ample time to reach the train station from your last destination in Florence.

I recommend you book a train ticket with a flexible return time in case you want to stay a bit longer.

If you opt for a tour or self-driving this is less relevant to you, just ensure you leave enough time to safely return home.

Have a blast!

Finally, remember to savor the experience and immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of Florence. Take in this remarkable city’s art, architecture, and ambiance, making lasting memories before returning to Rome.

And remember to take plenty of photos!

A SHORT train route in Europe has received rave reviews from a famous celebrity, who said he loves watching the scenery pass by his window.

Tan France is a household name for his work on Netflix show Queer Eye, in which he, along with four others, provides advice to help people improve their life situations.

Tan's favourite train journey is from Rome to Florence in Italy

The latest advice Tan has offered is related to his favourite means of transport - train travel, which he claims everyone should try more often than they do.

His best loved route is the train from Florence to Rome, which he described as "so gorgeous".

In an article for Thrillist , Tan wrote: "The thing I love most about traveling by train is you actually get to see so much more of the countryside or the coastline than if you were to take a plane.

"I think that there are so many hidden gems in Europe , and you get to see them all so easily by just looking out the window. That’s one of my favourite activities, actually—just looking out of the window and watching the landscape pass by."

However, it's not the only train route Tan loves in Europe.

He has a real love for sleeper trains, which he encourages more people to use for journeys through the continent.

He added: "I think everyone should take a sleeper train at least once when traveling Europe. There’s nothing quite like going to sleep in one city, just to wake up in a different one."

Tan's travel advice also extended to comfort, snacks and entertainment.

He recommends wearing comfortable, neutral coloured, loose outfits that work everywhere.

Then, his snack of choice is pistachios and water, which he claims is "simple, but does the trick".

A sleep mask and a laptop with his favourite films downloaded is also another essential for him to bring on any long train journey.

"After a ski holiday in Davos, I took the scenic train back to  Geneva  Airport. The snow-covered mountains and tiny alpine villages that we passed were so beautiful that it felt like a moving picture was playing beyond the glass." - Caroline McGuire

Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen

"Nothing quite beats the Shinkansen bullet train, one of the fastest in the world. It hardly feels like you're whizzing along at speed until you look outside and see the trees a green blur. Make sure to book seat D or E too - as you'll have the best view of Mount Fuji along the way." Kara Godfrey

This advice could come in handy for anyone looking to ride any of the several sleeper routes being launched across Europe at the moment.

Last month a new 15-hour night train departed from  Brussels  to  Prague  for the first time.

The sleeper service stops at Antwerp,  Rotterdam ,  Amsterdam , Berlin and Dresden before arriving in the Czech capital, its final destination.

The new route is operated by  European Sleeper and has been designed with sustainable travel in mind.

There are other journeys being planned by the company too, who hope to provide more train routes throughout Europe.

European Sleeper co-founder, Elmer Van Buuren told  Euronews : "Our goal is to add a new route each year so we can continue to contribute to a more integrated and sustainable European transportation network."

Brits who want to travel to Prague without boarding a plane can take the train too.

They will be able to take a  Eurostar  service from  London St Pancras  to Brussels, which takes just under two hours.

From there they can join the European Sleeper route through to Prague.

Meanwhile, Europe's best train route is in the UK, according to travel experts.

And this five-day train journey will set off through the UK later this year.

The train from Rome to Florence starts from around £22 and takes 90 minutes
