Mactan Island lies across the Mactan Channel from Cebu City in the southeast of the Philippines. It’s a modern place but has retained its greenness and has some lovely sandy beaches and good diving spots off the neighbouring islets. According to the ancient Cebuano epic “Aginid,” the original name of the island was Opong. As the islanders turned to piracy, however, it was referred to as Mangatang (“to wait in ambush”), which evolved into Matan, then Mactan.

Mactan is well known for producing guitars and other musical instruments. It’s also home of Mactan- Cebu International Airport, the country’s second busiest airport as well as the country’s largest export processing zone.

Mactan has a long history with many stories, the most frequently told is about the Battle of Mactan in 1521, when Portuguese-born explorer Ferdinand Magellan was killed.

On April 7, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese navigator, landed on the island; he was killed there by Chief Lapulapu on April 27. The spot in the northeast where he fell is marked with a monument, and Lapulapu, regarded as the first Filipino to defeat a Western conqueror, is considered a national hero.

the Mactan Shrine located in lapu lapu city Built to commemorate Philippine’s first battle, the Mactan Shrine is Cebu’s tribute to Datu Lapu-Lapu for defending Cebu from the invading Spaniards, led by Ferdinand Magellan, in the Battle of Mactan that happened on April 27, 1521. To pay homage to both historical figures, the Mactan Shrine holds the Lapu-Lapu Shrine and the Magellan Shrine.

The Lapu-Lapu Shrine has a 20-meter bronze statue of the Datu and is believed to be the exact spot where the battle occurred. To give you an idea of how valuable Lapu-Lapu’s place in history is, he is considered as the first Philippine native to resist foreign invasion – making him the first national hero of the Philippines. How cool is that? Even noteworthy is the fact that Lapu-Lapu and his warriors only used crude weapons of iron swords and bamboo spears to win against the heavily-armed Spanish invaders.

Adjacent to the Lapu-Lapu Shrine is the Magellan Shrine which shelters the Magellan Monument and the Magellan Marker. Built in 1866, the Magellan Monument is a memorial tower that holds different inscriptions on each side, including Magellan’s name in Portuguese. On the other hand, the Magellan Marker is a panoramic painting of the Battle of Mactan that was placed in 1941. The Shrine is located along Punta Engaño Road, Lapu-Lapu City.

Magellan’s Cross

To mark his arrival, Magellan planted a cross in the name of his Motherland. He became friends with the chieftain Rajah Humabon and his wife and, on the same site, the rulers were baptized as Carlos and

Juana, in honor of the Spanish king and his mother respectively. Soon after, four hundred of Humabon’s followers were introduced into Christianity.

As such, Magellan’s Cross marked the beginning of two things: Spain’s colonization and Christianity in the country. Today, the historical marker is housed in the center of a small chapel and is encased inside a tingalo wood.

The Cross is located conveniently next to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. It is home to the image of Señor Santo Niño de Cebu, Magellan’s gift to the couple during their christening.

Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño

is known as the oldest Catholic Church in Cebu. The church houses the image of the Sto. Niño, the city’s patron saint that represents Jesus as a black Holy Child. It is also a place for prayer and pilgrimage to a large number of people each year.

In 1565, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi called Basilica Minore Del Sto. Niño as San Agustin Church. The exact location of the church is the same spot where Legazpi’s Spaniard troupe discovered the image of Sto. Niño. It was thought to be the gift of Ferdinand Magellan to Queen Juana, the wife of Rajah Humabon, as a sign of their allegiance and over forty years after their baptism to Christianity.

The statue was found in a burnt wooden box left behind during the time of Magellan. Having been able to survive the fire, the Spaniards thought it to be a miracle that the image did not turn into ashes. On April 28, 1565, the same day Legazpi and his crew landed on Cebu, Fr. Andres de Urdaneta founded the Sto. Niño monastery. The first church was then built in 1566 by Fr. Diego de Herrera with only wood and nipa. Unfortunately, the church was consumed in fire. That time, the image of Sto. Niño survived again.

The new wooden church was built in 1605 by Fr. Pedro Torres, but another fire destroyed the church again in 1628. The third church was built that same year by Fr. Juan Medina, this time using stones and bricks. But the construction did not continue due to the lack of materials used.

On February 29, 1735, the new construction of the church was led by a number of people, Father Provincial Bergano, Governor-General Fernando Valdes, Bishop Manuel Antonio Decio y Ocampo of Ceby, and Juan de Albarran. Utilizing hewn stones, the present church was finished in 1739. By 1965, Pope Paul VI converted the church into Basilica Minore.

Fort San Pedro

Prided as the country’s oldest and smallest fort, Fuerte de San Pedro or more popularly known as Fort San Pedro, is another well-known tourist attraction in Cebu. It was built as a military defense structure under the command of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the first governor-general in the Philippines.

Its long and rich history is a true delight for tourists. Among other things, the Fort was once an army garrison, prison camp, school, hospital, and even a zoo! Today, Fort San Pedro is a historical park under the supervision of the local government. To add, part of the Fort was converted into a museum that has Spanish artifacts, paintings, old photographs, and historical documents in it.

many places in the Philippines are known for their joyous and colorful festivals, and Cebu is certainly no exception! Although the fiestas of this island province are renowned for their unique color and pageantry, they are also deeply rooted in the Cebuanos’ religious tradition and history. Cebu’s fetes are also opportunities for thanksgiving, reminiscence, as well as reunions of family and friends.

Cebu has 7 famous festivals (Sinulog Festival, Kadaugan sa Mactan, Pintos Festival, Haladaya Festival, La Torta Festival, Toslob Festival, Tag-Anito Festival) but the most famous, the grandest and most celebrated of Cebu’s festivals, is the Sinulog, it is celebrated every 3rd Sunday of January in Cebu City. The Sinulog commemorates the feast of the Santo Niño, or the Child Jesus, which is a significant icon in Cebu’s history. The fiesta is marked by Masses, processions, and pageants, as well as a large street party in the heart of the city. The gaiety and verve of the festivities are so infectious, and will certainly have even newcomers shouting out “Pit Senyor!”
