Theo Von Of 'Road Rules'...Where Is He Now?

Theo Von during a mission of "Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour" in 2000, and now, as a comedian.

He was the funny Southern boy on " Road Rules : Maxiumum Velocity Tour" in 2000, and now he's the funny Southern boy that leaves audiences in stitches in comedy clubs across the country. Theo Von , a " Challenge " champ twice over, may have been missing from MTV since his first-ever elimination from "Fresh Meat" in 2006, but he's been keeping audiences smiling all the same.

Von was a 19-year-old college student when he first auditioned for "Road Rules," and when we spoke with him today, he told Remote Control he was in a bit of a funk when producers set up tryouts for the show at Louisiana State University. After surviving a series of cuts, he was one of six strangers selected to drive the famous longhorn skull-adorned RV across the Southern United States, which ultimately earned him a ton of dough.

Since his time as an MTV go-to, Von has been performing at comedy clubs like Los Angeles' legendary Laugh Factory. After earning the "Fan Favorite" title on NBC's " Last Comic Standing " a few years back, he finally earned his first Comedy Central special, which he said he'll film early next year.

So, what else is Theo Von up to these days? Besides founding CrankTexts.com , a project featured on CollegeHumor.com through which he carries out text conversations with random numbers, he's just wondering what happened to the good ol' "Challenge" days.

On showing up to "Road Rules" and finding out he had to walk on a beam from one hot air balloon to another

I was definitely nervous, scared, excited--all of that. I grew up in a busted-ass area and didn't have a lot of crazy exciting opportunities. I just remember thinking, "If I die, at least I got to do this."

A favorite "Road Rules" memory, and if he'd return to the "Challenges"

I loved our trip to South Africa. I loved going through all the different villages and playing with the kids. I also got to swim with some Great Whites and touch them--that sh** was pretty gangster.

At this point, I'd never go back [to a Challenge]. I've got a career in comedy now, and the last "Challenge" I did was a little bit too wild--they were [partying] every night, and I was like in my room reading books.

How he got into comedy

There was a "Road Rules" season where they went on Semester at Sea, and some of the show producers told me they thought it would be good for me, like just as a life experience. So I did, and there was an open mic one night. I remember like 11 days in, they were serving us "fresh milk," and we were in the middle of the ocean. And my jokes were just like, "Where is this fresh milk coming from?" You know? Like I don't think we had just passed a buoy full of livestock.

+ Make sure to follow him on Twitter or Facebook for tour updates and general hilarity, and tune into a video he provided for some firsthand testimonial of CrankTexts' origin.

The Most Memorable Contestants On MTV's 'Road Rules' - Where Are They Now?

Donn Saylor

Road Rules was one of the first television shows to successfully blend adventure travel and reality competition to form a revolutionary new hybrid of entertainment. Figure in the abundance of young, attractive castmates who competed on the show during its 14-season run, and you can see why it was a massive hit for MTV .

But what about the Road Rules cast today? A show with so many big personalities means many fans have been curious about what the cast of Road Rules has been up to since the series ended. From TV hosting gigs on major networks to brushes with the law, the cast members'  experiences have run the gamut from the glorious to the... not so glorious.

The premise behind Road Rules was relatively simple. Five strangers hop in an RV together; then, with no money or conventional resources, they have to complete a series of missions. Over the years, this premise evolved a bit to make the game more exciting, but the general theme remained the same. There have even been numerous sequels and incarnations of the original, demonstrating the longevity of the show's popularity and appeal.

Casinos | how a rough childhood steered theo von into stand-up comedy.

The Press-Enterprise reporter Stephanie Schulte in Riverside, CA. Wednesday, September 19, 2013.

Growing up as a smaller kid in a tough neighborhood outside of New Orleans made being funny a necessity for stand-up comedian Theo Von.

“Humor is a free currency not everyone can have,” Von said in a recent phone interview. “Growing up poor, it was the one thing I could control. I couldn’t control money, but I could control if I was funny.”

Von will return to the Improv Comedy series at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24.

He said being funny began as a defensive mechanism and has now turned into an offensive mechanism.

In his 2016 Netflix special, “No Offense,” Von discussed many childhood experiences with hilarious candor, including having an elderly father, wrangling chimpanzees and being bullied.

“There was one guy who would fight everybody, and win,” Von said with a laugh. “He was strong and would choke you out with his neck. He’d grab you by the neck, with his neck, like a snake.”

After his run on MTV’s reality show “Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour” in 2000,”  Von was trying to figure out what he wanted to do in life and journeyed to Los Angeles when he was 23 years old with no real plan in place.

Then, he found a comedy club down down the street from his friend’s house and would get on stage for open mic nights.

“Being funny came easy to me,” he said. “Even if I was depressed or having a bad day, I could get up there, perform and feel better.”

That led him to a gig on the reality competition “Last Comic Standing” in 2006.

He said he never relied on his early reality show experiences and believes a lot of hard work is key to being a successful stand-up comedian.

“At the end of the day you have to be funny and continue to believe you are funny,” Von said.

When he is not on stage, Von spends time on his podcast “This Past Weekend,” a funny recap of what happened to him over the the previous weekend. He is currently filming a pilot, “Man Up,” for Comedy Central, which Von described as a documentary-style show focusing on men bettering themselves.

Von said he enjoys working with creative people and the excitement that comes with making a television show.

As for new material, Von said jokes include musings on the dark side of life.

“You never know what good thing is looming around the corner,” he said. “And that’s what makes it fun because life isn’t always that way.”

Season Info

Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour (Stylize: RR:09) is the ninth season of the MTV reality television series Road Rules. It took place mostly in the southern areas of the United States and in South Africa. A casting special aired on June 6th, 2000, and the season premiered two weeks later on June 19th, 2000.

When compared to prior seasons, Road Rules 9 (Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour) would be highly competitive. Fewer missions were completed for the sake of the experience. Rather, we’d see Roadies compete against other teams of competitors. They’d face: The Real World: New Orleans cast, a local fraternity, a group of MTV.com fans, and the band O-Town. Not every mission would be a face-off, because the cast did travel to South Africa to immerse themselves into a South African tribe. This episode would get the show nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Special Class) in 2001. [1]

The theme music for the series is the song 'Square Rave' by English DJ Squarepusher. The track was taken from his fourth studio album - Selection Sixteen, released in 1999 on Warp Records. [2]

This season would be the introduction of the role of 'Road Master'. Unlike future seasons of Road Rules, this iteration was a fictional character who gave the cast their tasks during each episode. This season the Road Master was played by Rainn Wilson, who is most famous for his role as Dwight Schrute on the NBC sitcom The Office. [3]

Out of the 14 seasons of Road Rules to air from 1995 to 2007 and even its sister show The Real World which lasted for 33 seasons from 1992 to 2019, Season 9 of Road Rules (Maximum Velocity Tour) is the only season that is not archived anywhere on the internet.

Road Rules is an MTV reality show that was a sister show of the network's flagship reality show, The Real World. The series debuted on July 19th, 1995, and ended on May 9th, 2007. This allowed Road Rules a total of 14 seasons and 12 years on the air.

The series followed five to six strangers, between the ages of 18 and 24, stripped of their money and restricted to a life in an RV, travelling from location to location. The strangers were guided by a set of clues and missions to complete at each location.
