These houseboat rentals will make you rethink your typical summer vacation.

Sure, you could rent a lakeside cabin or a beach house again for your next vacation. But why not bring those watery vistas full circle by renting a houseboat in a spectacular U.S. location instead?

A houseboat may not first come to mind as your typical vacation rental . But you'll find them listed on websites like Airbnb and VRBO as well as niche sites like Houseboating.org, to name a few, with onboard amenities that range from kayaks and bicycles to waterslides twisting down from the top deck.

There's a lot to love about renting a floating home for a night or longer, with everything you need onboard to cook for yourself (BYO groceries) and sleep comfortably—whether you leave the dock or not. And houseboats often rent for far less than land-based homes in popular vacation destinations like Florida, California, and Minnesota.

But before you book a houseboat, there are a few things to consider.

When a houseboat rental says it sleeps a certain number of people, that doesn't necessarily mean everyone gets a cabin. Dinettes onboard usually convert to a bed, so a houseboat's common space and galley is fair game for sleeping quarters, too.

If your houseboat doesn't come with smaller watercraft onboard—like SUPs and kayaks—you might want to consider renting them, so you can paddle off to explore tight waterways or just get in some exercise during your trip.

If you have a valid unrestricted driver's license, you can rent and captain a houseboat—there's no particular boating license needed to take the helm. The location you rent from will most likely walk you through the basics onboard and take you for a test spin, too, so you can be sure you feel comfortable operating the houseboat. Then it's off cruising you go.

Sutton Lake, West Virginia

Sutton Lake has 40 miles of shoreline to explore and clear waters to swim in backed by forested hills, with hundreds of coves to moor in for a night under the inky skies of central West Virginia. There are no commercial developments or homes on the lake, and it's surrounded by public lands home to white-tailed deer, turkeys, and ruffed grouse (there are even rumors that a Bigfoot-type creature roams these forests, so keep an eye out). Wolf River, Wisconsin

Lake Powell

Arizona and Utah Perhaps one of the best-known houseboating locations of all, Lake Powell is known for its striking red sandstone canyons with fascinating hiking opportunities. Long summer days are best spent on the water soaking up the sun. You can lounge by a pool, surf off a beach, or splash around in a lake, but the truly aquatically inclined should consider taking it a step further. On a houseboat vacation, you’ll actually live on the water, but you’ll also be able to dock or beach and enjoy land whenever you want. It opens two worlds: that of water sports and a wealth of hard-to-get-to shore activities. You can spend your days exploring waterways and cruising around coastlines, all while having the comforts of home at your fingertips.

By definition, the houseboat is no ordinary boat: The vessels have more amenities than you could ever imagine. They’re spacious enough to hold large groups, and many feature hot tubs, slides, grills, fully equipped kitchens, big-screen televisions, and even fireplaces. Plus, you can go swimming right off your back deck. These floating vacation rentals are actually not difficult to use and are available on lakes and rivers across the country, so it’s easier than you might think to get out on the water this summer with a houseboat vacation.

Who can rent a houseboat

Anyone can rent and enjoy a houseboat. Usually you don’t even need special licensing or prior experience to operate houseboat rentals; sometimes all you need is a valid driver’s license.

Even a first-time boater can learn how to pilot a houseboat after a short lesson. Navigational procedures, how to beach and tie off, and other boating maneuvers are typically explained and demonstrated upon rental. However, each state has different pilot regulations, so be sure to check with your boat rental company before you go.

Houseboating is ideal for families or a large group of friends, and it’s even better if you get multiple boats to cruise around in your own flotilla. Because there is a good mix of activities, you can split up during the day and still all come back together at night to eat under the stars and share the hot tub. Get a group together who can go with the flow and get along well in a small space.

Even though houseboats can sleep up to 16 people, you’ll still be living in 800 to 1,100 square feet. As with an RV, it’s close quarters; every bit of space has a purpose, and you’ll likely have to share bedrooms.

How to prepare for a houseboat vacation

While in most cases you will be able to dock your houseboat and get any supplies you need, save yourself the hassle and do all of that grocery shopping before you get on the boat. But go wild with your meal plan—most boats have very modern kitchens as well as outdoor grills. You may want to bring some extra coolers and ice for your beverages; it’ll save you refrigerator space.

St. John River, New Brunswick, Canada

The mature old-growth forest landscape on the Mactaquac Lake district of the St. John River in New Brunswick is a perfect place to try houseboating. There is only one houseboat operator on this river, so you will practically have the waterway to yourself. It’s easy to find secluded little coves where you can park and go hiking, play a round of golf, visit Kings Landing Living History Park , or see the world’s largest axe in Nackawic. The river is wide, and there is little traffic, so you can just drift and spend your time sliding off the top deck into the refreshing water.

Because Lakeway Houseboat Vacations is the only operator in the area, you should reserve well in advance. The houseboat company will give you advice on the best mooring spots and a loose itinerary including what to visit if you are new to the area.

Lake Ouachita, Arkansas

Plopped in the middle of green-forested mountains, Arkansas’s largest lake boasts pristine, clear water. It’s best known for its abundant fishing and excellent scuba diving; you can dive or swim here with hundreds of nonstinging, freshwater jellyfish just off your boat. August and September are peak months for jellyfish sightings, when Lake Ouachita’s water is warm and the creatures’ food is abundant. If you’d rather not swim with the jellies, cruise along to one of the lake’s 100 uninhabited islands to explore this area on foot. Wake Zone Luxury Houseboat Rentals has boats that sleep up to 16 people. The rental company will deliver supplies such as groceries or medicine to your boat, and it also offers captain services to park and moor the boat for no extra charge. Lake Shasta, California

With 365 miles of shoreline, it’s no wonder Lake Shasta has been dubbed the “Houseboating Capital of California.” On any given day there can be up to 450 houseboat rentals on the lake, but the lake is so large, it rarely feels crowded. While Lake Shasta is best known for its water sports—wakeboarding, waterskiing, tubing, jetskiing, kayaking, windsurfing, and swimming—there’s no shortage of land activities. Hike through the evergreens on shore with Mount Shasta’s scenic snow-capped peak looming in the background. Or visit the Shasta Caverns, created 200 million years ago. Shasta Marina at Packers Bay has been renting houseboats for 20 years. It will also rent Jet Skis with your boat if you have the need for speed. The area is busiest in the summer months when water temperatures reach 78 degrees.

Crane Lake, Minnesota

Cruise around a national park at the water-based Voyageurs National Park . Created in 1971, the park encompasses land and water areas. Pick up your houseboat rental on Crane Lake, just outside of the park, and cruise into Voyageurs. In this water wonderland, you’ll navigate the same waterways that hardy trappers and traders relied upon over 250 years ago. The area is great for wildlife viewing. Enjoy cool summer nights and warm water in July and August, or go in September to have a chance of viewing the northern lights from the top deck. Or simply curl up onboard with your favorite book and listen to the call of the loon at twilight.

When they do, they flock to certain towns that, by virtue of their marinas, amenities, and attractions, are ideally situated for a floating existence. Whether you plan to live on your houseboat seasonally or become a year-round liveaboard, these towns offer everything you need to live your best life on the water.

Sausalito, California

Otis Redding famously sang of “sittin’ on the dock of the bay” in this Northern California town where more than 400 houseboats line numerous marinas and harbors. Sausalito sits on Richardson Bay, which has sheltered houseboats for more than a century, although the eye-popping pink, blue, and red counterculture icons the town is known for date to the postwar era. Today, houseboat communities like Galilee Harbor continue to attract an eclectic mix of residents. Fort Washington, Maryland

Not surprisingly, this town overlooking the Potomac River, the fourth-largest river on the Atlantic coast, draws fans of the floating life who want to moor a mere half hour from the U.S. capital. The Fort Washington Marina is one of the most popular houseboat communities in the area. Sharp-eyed cinephiles might recognize it as the filming location for the 1950s Sophia Loren-Cary Grant flick “Houseboat.” Although the marina is open only from May through October, it offers houseboat owners more than 200 boat slips and new concrete docks for vessels up to 60 feet.

Portland, Oregon

Portland contains the largest houseboat community in the country, with some 1,400 floating homes in the area. Moorages run up and down the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, just a short drive to North Portland’s speakeasies and food carts. As a bonus, Oregon imposes no sales tax, so you’ll save a bit when you buy a houseboat.

Piermont, New York

With skyrocketing real estate prices in the Big Apple, some residents have headed 30 miles upriver to this village on the western edge of the Hudson. It’s become a hub for houseboat dwellers thanks to its proximity to bohemian lounges, art galleries, and restaurants, and its extensive pier overlooking Tallman Mountain. Some marinas, including Tappan Zee Marina, rent slips by the day, season, or all year.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Although this southern resort town is best known for its natural geothermal springs, it’s also a hot spot for houseboat enthusiasts. Lake Ouachita, the largest in Arkansas, attracts vacationers who just want a floating hotel for a weekend as well as liveaboards who long for year-round views of the Ouachita Mountains and Ouachita National Forest. Brady Mountain Resort & Marina offers 650 boat slips, some of which accommodate boats up to 100 feet long.

Shasta Lake, California

Waterfalls, well-maintained trails, and a Mediterranean climate make the eponymous man-made lake in this Northern California haunt an ideal spot to stow a houseboat. At 4.6 million acre-feet, Shasta Lake is the largest reservoir in the state. As you’d expect, it offers a wealth of mooring points, but Bridge Bay Marina is noteworthy for its central location, easy access from the interstate, and slip rentals for transient as well as long-term visitors.

Page, Arizona

A portal to Glen Canyon National Park, the town of Page sees 3 million visitors each year, but it’s home to only 7,200 residents, among them a thriving community of houseboat dwellers on the 24.3-million acre-foot Lake Powell. The lake is lined with marinas, including Antelope Point, a Navajo-nation owned and operated marina rife with amenities.

Branson, Missouri

The country shows that line West 76 Country Boulevard transformed Branson into a top destination for music lovers. But it’s the 3.5-million-acre-foot Table Rock Lake that makes the mountain town in the Ozarks a hit with houseboat owners. The fishing- and paddleboard-friendly reservoir that hugs Table Rock State Park is home to a number of marinas, including the park’s own, which leases both transient and year-round slips to houseboat owners and offers amenities like a dockside restaurant and a store with boating essentials.

Demopolis, Alabama

The Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers played an important role in the history of Demopolis. The area was initially settled by French expatriates who later moved up the the Warrior River. Americans purchased the land they left behind and over time transformed it into a major river port and lumber town. Today, an impressive collection of houseboats moor at the juncture of these two rivers. The Demopolis Yacht Basin and other marinas welcome both seasonal houseboat dwellers and liveaboards, and offer easy access to nearby campgrounds, restaurants, and the town’s Greek-Revival-style house museums.

Fort Myers, Florida

The 156-mile Okeechobee Waterway, which extends from Fort Myers on Florida’s east coast to Stuart on its west, has long been a magnet for maritime enthusiasts. But while some are content to sit by the water watching the barges and private vessels bob along the cool currents, others prefer to be part of the action. Brunswick, Georgia

The mainland port city of Brunswick, which is considered part of the Golden Isles of Georgia, was a booming shipbuilding center during World War II, producing 99 ships—primarily cargo ships—for the war effort. Annapolis, Maryland

Corpus Christi, Texas

This seaside community overlooking the Gulf Coast not only boasts sandy beaches and endangered species like the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, but also has the only major downtown marina on the state’s coast. Most brokers who could help you buy a houseboat charge commissions ranging from 2 to 10 percent. Always seek references ahead of time so you feel comfortable working with anyone.

7. St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg sits on the Baltic Sea, offering beautiful beaches, sandy shores and picturesque islands dotting the horizon. Whether you want to hang out on Neva bankside or at Peterhof Palace, waterfront excursions abound. Take a ferry ride to witness stunning panoramic views of Saint-Petersburg and neighboring towns. Catch a show at Mariinsky Theatre or ballet performance at Kirov Ballet Theater.

Weekly rates start at $1,900 per week, plus security deposits. Monthly rates can range from $2,600 to $41,000, depending on the length of your stay (and of course the houseboat that you choose. 

If you decide to buy you will find that commissions range from 3 to 7 percent.

In general, boat ownership tends to be pricier upfront than temporary rentals due to added expenses but long term it can be a great choice. If you’re planning to stay in one spot for an extended period, owning a boat gives you greater flexibility to move around freely. Also, it’s worth noting that some nations have restrictions regarding residency status for non-citizens. 

Talk to local authorities first so you’re aware of any potential issues if you decide to rent or buy a houseboat in another country. 

8. Brooklyn New York

Brooklyn’s proximity to Coney Island marks it as a prime destination for partiers seeking inexpensive accommodations close to the beach. Spend the day soaking up rays on Brighton Beach promenade, then retire to your home on the water for a delicious meal and or to enjoy the sunset. 

After dark, hit up Barclays Center sports arena or iconic Williamsburg Water Tower.

Monthly rental rates start at $1,200 per month, plus security deposits. Weekly rates are less expensive at $550 per week. 

Ownership cost for a houseboat will depend on where you moor it as well as the type of houseboat you buy, Brokerage fees are capped at 4 percent of the total price.

9. Los Angeles California

Los Angeles is famous for its sprawling metropolis packed with attractions. From Hollywood to Venice, you can explore L.A.’s diverse neighborhoods before heading back to your houseboat. Visit Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, then catch a movie at TCL Chinese 6 screen theater. Later, dine outdoors overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Sushi Rock restaurant.

Weekly houseboat rates start at $1,450 per week, plus security deposits. Monthly rates include various discounts and promotions.

Brokers charge commissions ranging from 1 to 8 percent. Ask about how much interest you earn from holding a particular property. 

Remember fees paid to providers like lenders, title companies and surveyors add to the overall expense.

As with San Francisco, prices in LA can get expensive fast so be sure and check out the cost of fuel, docking, food, etc. before deciding on whether it is a good option for you and your houseboat dreams or not.

Have you ever gone cruising in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven't, make sure you do. This is easily one amongst the most remarkable and unique experiences that our state has to offer.

Present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. The original Kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices. A standard Kettuvallam can hold up to 30 tons of goods from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

In Malayalam language Kettu refers to ‘dwelling structures’ ‘Vallam’ means boat. These are boats with a thatched roof cover over wooden hulls. The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a Kettuvallam can last for generations.

A portion of the Kettuvallam was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals were cooked onboard and supplemented with freshly cooked fish from the backwaters.

When  modern trucks replaced this system of transport, people came up with a new way that would keep these boats, almost all of which were more than 100 years old, in the market. By constructing special rooms to accommodate travellers, these boats cruised forward from near-extinction to enjoy their present  popularity.

Today these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alappuzha alone, there are as many as 500 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the areca nut tree are used for roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and wood of coconut trees and coir for beds. Nowadays, Solar panels are preferred for lighting.

Today, the houseboats boast of the same comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm leaves open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine. Boat-trains - formed by joining two or more houseboats together are also used by large groups of sightseers.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float in a relaxed way right through it.

Amsterdam is a city of canals and why not experience those canals by staying on a houseboat?  This is a fantastic choice of accommodation in Amsterdam and is surprisingly reasonably priced.  We found accommodation in Amsterdam quite expensive, but renting a whole houseboat in Amsterdam was very similarly priced to family hotels in Amsterdam .

Why Stay in an Amsterdam Houseboat?

An Amsterdam houseboat is a glorified floating apartment complete with all amenities you would expect on land.  Some of them look like boats and may even still be able to navigate through the canals.  Most of them are floating boxes on concrete pads in the canal.  These floating boxes have beautiful windows overlooking the canals, luxurious spa bathrooms, full kitchens, regular toilets and are connected to the water, sewage and electrical lines.  You are not sacrificing comfort at all by staying on a houseboat.

For families and larger parties, renting a houseboat (like renting an apartment) can be the best option of where to stay in Amsterdam.  You can find 1,2 and 3 bedroom houseboats giving yourselves lots of space.  We really appreciate having a kitchen as well to cook some of our meals in, saving costs.  It is also really nice to have a home to come home to when you are traveling.  Many of the houseboats are located in real neighborhoods, away from the tourist establishments.

When we weren’t busy touring around the city, we really enjoyed relaxing on our floating home and watching canal life go by.  There are lots of boats that ply the canals and we had swans that would come visit our window in the evenings.

Factors to Consider

Location is always our number one criteria and I spend lots of time researching when we want to base ourselves.  Amsterdam has lots of great areas.  Since we travel with kids, we want to make sure we are somewhere central that we can easily get to the main attractions from.  Ideally we are located near public transport for those days when our feet get tired.  I would recommend staying inside the Prinsengracht canal or at least inside Lijnbaansgracht canal.

The Jordaan neighborhood is one of the best well known in the city with its trendy cafes, winding streets and wonderful markets.  The Anne Frank House Museum is located in this neighborhood and the city centre is close by.  The houseboat we rented was located in this neighborhood and we really appreciated the feeling of staying in a real, working neighborhood.

Houseboats seem to line every canal in Amsterdam

There are a range of Amsterdam houseboats available from real, operational boats to the ones built on cement pads that lack any type of propulsion mechanism.  The boat style can be very charming with cute cubbies to sleep in and ladders to climb.  The floating apartment style tend to be more modern and look and function like a regular apartment.  Consider what style you envision for your Amsterdam houseboat experience.

House boats commonly come in studio, 1, 2 and 3 bedroom varieties.  This makes it a great option for families and groups as every one can have their own space.  Obviously the larger the houseboat, the more expensive it will be.

Our floating living room

We found some really budget houseboats if you were willing to sacrifice space, location and/or comfort.  We have lived on a sailboat before so we were tempted to choose one of those tiny homes and save some money.  In the end, we opted the splurge (for us) a bit and get a full 2 bedroom apartment style houseboat.  It worked out to being not much more then we would have spent to stay in a hostel as a family (that was over $220 CAD/night).

How to Book

We have used VRBO a lot for house rentals and find there are really good quality properties on this site.

B & B Houseboat – great houseboat budget option, you are renting a room with private bath in this B&B houseboat, great host, it is located a bit further from the centre, but still a great location.

Canal Houseboat – 2 bedroom, 2 bath, located between the Old City Centre and trendy De Pijp, great for a family or two couples.

Bohemian Houseboat – quirky 1 bedroom, great location in the Jordaan, functional space, perfect for a couple of small family.

Tripadvisor

We love Tripadvisor to read reviews about potential accommodation, but did you know you can book directly through them?  There are some houseboat vacation rentals listed on Tripadvisor and you can read reviews and book all in one spot.  Here a few to consider:

Modern Houseboat – 1 bedroom, 1 bath, right on the edge of the Old Jewish Quarter

Pantheos Romantic Houseboat – receives great reviews, located near the Jordaan, 1 bedroom/1 bath houseboat, friendly owner

Houseboat Trijntje  – 2 bedroom/1 bath boat style houseboat, located on the Princengracht, very unique and cute

We booked our houseboat in HomeAway and there quite a few listed to choose from.  HomeAway offers holiday vacation rentals and we have always been really happy with the places we have booked on this site.   You can sort by accommodation type and select “boat” to see all the houseboats available.

Our Verdict

We were so glad we decided to pick a houseboat for our Amsterdam accommodation.   It was a really unique and special experience that we will always remember.  The only downside was that I wished we had more time to relax at our houseboat.  We were so busy touring around the city that we didn’t spend as much time in our cute little floating home.

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

This former capitol of the Soviet Union is still the political and financial center of Russia. Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

The House with Animals

Tank Excursion and Bazooka Shooting in Moscow

Dormition Cathedral

This is another Russian Orthodox cathedral that is located inside the Moscow Kremlin. It is another famous landmark of Moscow. The inside is decorated with ancient frescoes.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Kolomenskoe Estate

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve

This royal estate was founded by Catherine the Great. She was Russia’s longest serving female leader. It is now a gorgeous museum!

Stalinist Skyscraper tour

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.
