Among the many equipment used in golf, irons are essential, and the Spalding Tour Edition Irons are a popular choice among golfers. This article will discuss the Spalding Tour Edition Irons in detail.

Overview of Spalding Tour Edition Irons

These irons are designed to offer forgiveness, distance, and accuracy to golfers of all levels. The Spalding Tour Edition Irons are available in various sets, including 3-PW, 4-SW, and 5-SW. The sets come with graphite or steel shafts, and the player can choose the flex that suits their swing speed.

Features of Spalding Tour Edition Irons

Announcing the launch of the tour edition 6 finger golf glove from nassau golf.

The Innovative 6 Finger Golf Glove is Designed to Help People Properly Grip the Club and Get Solid Shots

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / July 3, 2021 / Nassau Golf is pleased to announce the launch of their Tour Edition 6 Finger Golf Glove.

To learn more about the Tour Edition 6 Finger Golf Glove and how it works, please check out https://nassaugolf.com/.

As a company spokesperson noted, with over 32 million people in the United States playing golf, there is definitely a need for tools that help to improve the game. For example, no matter how much people practice and how skilled they become, oftentimes club head and hand consistency are not achieved.

"Unfortunately, due to the natural structure of the body, at the top of a swing hands typically separate," the spokesperson noted, adding that this can cause the player to regrip and thus reduce the force behind the swing.

To help prevent this issue and eliminate the need to focus on gripping with every swing, Nassau Golf has created the Tour Edition 6 Finger Golf Glove. The innovative glove, which is currently the focus of a fundraiser on the crowd funding website Indiegogo, is designed to stop this separation and put the lead thumb in the ideal position.

"Its unique six finger design ensures that the hands are properly held in place, therefore enhancing the player's game," the spokesperson said.

The Tour Edition 6 Finger Golf Glove is designed to be very easy to use. With the main hand inside the glove, the player can place his or her second hand's lead thumb into the attached area. Once both hands are together, there is virtually no chance of movement or separation.

The Tour Edition 6 Finger Golf Glove is ideal for beginners and pros alike and is available in right-handed and left-handed versions. In addition to helping to eliminate hand separation and improve grip on the club, the glove may also quickly boost muscle memory.

In addition, to help keep golfers as comfortable as possible while wearing the Tour Edition 6 Finger Golf Glove, it features breathable mesh on the knuckles, fingers and wrist, and is resistant to both water and sweat.

About Nassau Golf:

At Nassau Golf, they pledge to provide golfers with the finest-quality golf equipment offered anywhere, incorporating the ultimate in performance. They manufacture golf club sets that exceed industry standards and also offer equipment and gifts. For more information, please visit https://nassaugolf.com/.

Graphite Designs Tour AD DI Shaft Review

More in reviews:.

Sub 70 Pro V2 Fairway Wood

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Designs Tour AD DI shaft feels great and put up some spectacular numbers.  Easy to see why it’s such a hit on the PGA Tour.

Check out the low launch, low spin Tour AD VF HERE

Introduction

The goal of any manufacturer is to build hype around their product organically.  Smothering the consumer with ads is fine, but it’s nothing compared to the consumer seeing all of their friends talking about and using a product.  That latter scenario is what seemed to happen overnight with the Graphite Designs Tour AD DI shaft.

From Charles Howell III to Tiger Woods to Adam Scott, it felt like every PGA Tour pro was playing the orange “Deep Impact,” and every forum was chattering about it.  The momentum continues to the 2016-2017 season as Hideki Matsuyama uses one in his driver to stack up wins.  We put this tour-proven shaft through the paces to see how it performs for those of us without PGA Tour swings.

Love the AD DI but want something new?  Check out the Graphite Design Tour AD UB HERE

Graphite Designs has a formula for the graphics of their Tour AD shafts, and the DI doesn’t vary from it.  It’s primarily one solid color with some rings in the mid-butt area and very simple graphics .  While some of the colors are bold, the graphics are no nonsense.

Unlike most of their line up, the AD DI does come in two flavors: black and the signature orange .  Go stealth or stand out, the choice is yours.

Somehow I missed out on the AD DI craze a couple years ago, but after one swing I immediately understood what all the fuss was about.  This shaft has a tremendous kick to it, but it never feels out of control.  The company’s description is “Medium” in the butt and mid and “Stiff” in the tip, which matches my assessment exactly.  You get a smooth, powerful kick through impact, but the tip doesn’t feel loose or torque-y, even on mishits.

As an aside, kudos to Graphite Designs for taking all the voodoo out of shaft descriptions.  For each of their shafts, they describe the butt, mid, and tip sections on a scale that ranges from “Very Stiff” to “Soft.”  This makes it easy to figure out what you might like and what you want to try next.

Performance

When I love the feel of a shaft, chances are its going to perform well for me.  That was certainly the case with the Graphite Designs AD DI.

I started my testing with the stiff flex version of the AD DI.  The smooth kick made me feel like I was delivering effortless power to the ball, and the results were very solid.  When I bumped up to the X flex, things got even better.  The kick was slightly less pronounced, as you’d expect, but the consistency of the results was through the roof.  Every shot was near the center of the face, and the monitor was showing the same push-draw time after time .

For players who haven’t hit Graphite Designs shafts and can’t make use of their feel chart, I would say that the AD DI is a mix of the Diamana Blue and White shafts.  It has the smooth feel and pronounced kick of the blue with the strong tip of the white.  For me, that adds up to great consistency with tremendous feel .

graphite-designs-ad-di_0033

Prior to this review, my experience with  Graphite Designs  shafts had been minimal, but now the AD DI is making a serious push to go in the bag.  It blends some of the best attributes of my favorite shafts, and the performance simply can’t be argued with.  Waiting to get this into play is just one more reason that this winter is going to feel really long.

First of all, I thank you for your website. Passionate about golf and about gear of golf , you are for me , the website number one on the subject .

I particularly appreciated your review of the ADDI shaft. GRAPHITE DESIGN being one of my favorite trademarks. I hope that others tests of the range are going to follow. Thank you again ! Excuse-me for my broken English. Patrick

' src=

Hey Matt, always enjoy reading your reviews. This GD Tour AD DI is a shaft I keep hearing about and seeing in clubs over the years. It was no surprise to hear you were impressed by it, but it was really interesting to see that you were concentrating on the proper flex for yourself(S vs. XS). With that said, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Stiff shaft. I know you will ultimately fall back on getting fit….understood. But given what you experienced for yourself, which appeared to be that you need the XS shaft for your swing speed to maximize accuracy, what would you venture the S flex would be good for in terms of swing speed? Assuming a smooth swing and 102-103 mph….S flex? Once again, I know a fitting is absolutely a must, but what swing speed range do you think might benefit best from the S flex AD DI shaft?

' src=

The thing that impressed me about the AD DI is that I could have been very happy playing the S, I just preferred the shot shape with the X. The S is also so smooth, I think it could work all the way down to, perhaps 95 MPH. Around 100 MPH is probably the sweet spot.

' src=

Matt, surprised it has taken so long to try out this iconic shaft. I am 100 SS and the GD DI 60 Stiff is the shaft I keep coming back to. Best feel yet never seems overpowered. Also agreed with the comment that it sits between the Diamana Blue and White. More stable than the Blue and more feel than the White.

And if you want that next level of stiffness / low ball flight try the BB. I noticed Kaymer just moved from DI to BB in driver, but kept DI in other woods. It also comes in Black which I think was a special order/ request from Adam Scott a few years back.

First of all I thank you for your site !

For me you are the number one ! I particularly appreciated your review of the ADDI ; GD being one of my favorites trademarks I hope that others tests of the range are going to follow

thank you again Patrick ( paris)

We will have a review of the AD TP coming soon and hopefully more to follow after that. Any models in particular that you’re interested in?

Thank you Matt !

a review of the AD TP would be perfect ! AD MT too !

' src=

Thanks, Matt. As it is often said the shaft is the “engine” of the club and the key to proper fitting. For us mere mortals, may I presume that this shaft also comes in a “Regular” form for slower swing speeds? Thanks again. Steve

Yes, it’s available in R2 (senior) through X.

' src=

I have the AD DI-7s shaft in my TaylorMade 2017 M2 3 wood. It’s the best club I’ve ever owned. My swing speed is around 105mph, yet I feel as if however hard I swing with this shaft, it just copes and continues to deliver. The feel is exquisite. Now all I have to do is see if I can find a driver to put this shaft into!

' src=

Hi Matt, I have just purchased a Ping G400 Max Driver…Reg stock stand.shaft. I am 70 yo on 18 h/c. Would I benefit from fitting an Ad Di Shaft ? In a regular form. My swing speed is around 90 to100. Can I buy in Australia?

I’m not sure who distributes Graphite Design in Australia.

There’s no inherent reason why the AD DI would be better than the stock PING shaft. The only way it would be better is if it’s a better fit for your swing, which you could find out by working with a high quality club fitter.

' src=

Love the podcast!

Are these averages from the S or X flex?

This was a while back but I believe the X was the better fit.

' src=

What was your ball flight with the S?

I’m not going to be able to reliably tell you any more than is in the review, this was written quite a while back.

' src=

Great review. How would you compare this shaft to the Tensei series? Also, in the past have you ever put together a shaft comparison chart?

There are a lot of different profiles in the Tensei series, but overall both the Tensei and Graphite Designs shafts are consistent and high quality. I have not put together a shaft comparison chart because we encourage everyone to be fit.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have the choice of the Di 60g stiff or VENTUS Black 6 60g in New St200 G, VENTUS is newer to market, what do you think.?

I would suggest getting fit and finding the best option for your swing. If you want to know what fits my swing, you can see my WITB here: https://pluggedingolf.com/about/matt-saternus/matts-whats-in-the-bag/

' src=

Hey Matt, Hopefully you still remember the feel of this shaft since it was reviewed a number of years ago…. In the review you stated that the feel was somewhere between Diamana BF and DF. Now I am curious to know whether the feel of the AD DI is similar to the Diamana ZF in your experience since the ZF is considered to be in between DF and BF regarding feel. I know you did the review on the ZF already but maybe I am just looking for a confirmation. Hope you can answer my question, thanks!

Overall, yes, they’re somewhat similar.

' src=

would you recommend AD_D1 7x for a senior who’s swing speed is down?

A 70 gram X flex is not something I would recommend for someone whose speed is going down, unless it’s going down from a truly elite level.

' src=

Are you able to share what head(s) you had conducted this shaft review with? As always appreciate you and plugged in.

Thanks, Mike

I always test with my gamer, the PING G425 Max.

' src=

I demoed the DI-6s with a fitter a while back and he thought it was my best fit from what we had available. However my club head SS is only mid, maybe high 90s, which according to GD suggests a stiff- regular. The fitter doesn’t have a SR with a Ping tip to demo. I’m playing a Ping tour 65 stiff ok right now but the DI was better.

If anything, the DI-6 stiff plays smoother/less demanding than the Ping tour stiff, true? Apparently the DI-6s might play ok down to mid 90s as you mentioned? Otoh worst case, a stiff-regular wouldn’t be flimsy, true?

Thanks for any thoughts…$370 shaft, good grief:-)

Yes, I think the AD-DI will feel softer/smoother than the PING Tour in the same flex. Personally, I would be hesitant to buy anything I hadn’t tested, especially for $370. If you thought the stiff felt good and it worked well, I would stick with that rather than taking a chance on the SR.

' src=

Does anyone have experience with the 105x hybrid/driving iron shaft? Thoughts? Is it “too stiff”?

' src=

Good morning! I wanted to see if you could share a thought or two comparing the Tour AD DI vs the Ventus TR Red. Thanks

I have a full review of the Ventus TR Red here: https://pluggedingolf.com/fujikura-ventus-tr-red-shaft-review/

Check out the best limited edition Tour bags from the US PGA

Another major means another set of limited edition Tour bags. Here are three belters...

golf 6 tour edition

As the US PGA rolls into Louisville, Kentucky, and more specifically, Valhalla Golf Club, so do a wide range of fantastic limited-edition Tour bags.

Most of the major golf brands produce special edition bags for their players at each major championship, and the US PGA is no different.

Typically inspired by the venue's heritage and iconography, each brand's designer works tirelessly to ensure that their bag looks the best when striding down the fairway.

Drawing upon Kentucky's rich history of Bourbon and the iconic Kentucky Derby, the majority of brands have gone down the equine route with their designs.

The stable is strong this year, but we've narrowed it down to our three favourites.

Let's get into it...

Callaway

Callaway has opted to pay homage to the Kentucky Derby, with its bag featuring the traditional jacquard pattern typically worn by jockeys.

The bag also features a horseshoe on the ball pouch and four roses on the handle, a nod to the rose bed given to the winning horse.

If you like the look of Callaway's bag, you can enter a competition on GolfMagic's Instagram page for the chance to win one.

Here's another cracker from TaylorMade...

TaylorMade

Also opting to stick with an equine theme, TaylorMade has produced a stunning blue and silver bag with a jacquard pattern.

The bag also features an array of small details, including the fastest-ever winning time at the Kentucky Derby printed on the handle and a rose on the valuables pouch.

Paying homage to Kentucky's fine Bourbon, the bag also has a logo on the bottom set in a whiskey barrel design and beading near the base of the bag, which traditionally can also be found on the bottom of glasses containing a mint Julep, a traditional Bourbon based cocktail popular in Kentucky.

The matching headcovers that go with the bag also feature mint and racing designs, again delivering on Kentucky's two most recognised icons.

Cobra

To set itself apart from the competition, Cobra has opted against the jacquard pattern and instead gone for a clean blue, white, brown, and orange design.

Despite that, the same themes are still present, and despite not being on the bag, the brand has still sneaked the jacquard design onto the accompanying putter cover.

The base is covered in roses, and the wood headcovers feature numbering in the same font and design as those typically worn by horses at the Kentucky Derby.

Bridgestone Golf announces First Tee Edition e6 golf ball

Change Text Size

Bridgestone Golf announced today that a special First Tee edition e6 will be available exclusively through PGA TOUR Superstore. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to First Tee, a youth development organization that helps kids and teens build their strength of character through golf.

“We’re very pleased to offer this special First Tee edition e6, exclusively at PGA TOUR Superstore,” said Dan Murphy, President and CEO, Bridgestone Golf. “For decades, First Tee has done very fine work, helping young people learn and grow through the game of golf, building strong individuals and communities. It is an honor to create a dedicated product where the proceeds from the sales will bolster their charitable endeavors.”

The e6 is the longest running model in Bridgestone’s current lineup and the latest model, new for 2021, features a larger, softer core for an exceptionally pleasing, responsive feel and added distance for moderate swing speed players. The new design, which is specifically tailored to modern players who value a ball that provides a very soft feel at impact, will retail for $21.99/dozen. The unique model that benefits First Tee can be identified by the sticker on the front of the box.

“The e6 works for a wide variety of players with moderate clubhead speeds,” said Elliot Mellow, Golf Ball Marketing Manager, Bridgestone Golf. “It’s our most successful two-piece Surlyn golf ball model to date and has long been popular among players who demand a very soft feel with maximum distance off the tee and enhanced forgiveness on the long- and mid-irons.”

The First Tee edition e6 is available in white and optic yellow and can be found exclusively at PGA TOUR Superstores immediately.

Graphite Design Tour AD CQ 6 Shaft - View 1

Graphite Design Tour AD CQ 6 Shaft

  • 3X Rewards Points

Mid/high launch, mid spin. The Tour AD CQ shafts features the new Nitta 2G-Namd carbon-fiber material technology in the butt section of the shaft and has a bend profile of firm in the handle section, firm in the center section and a medium+ tip section to promote mid-high launch angles and mid ball spin rates. The Nitta 2G-Namd material is based on modern carbon nanotube technology that binds the fibers tighter together than standard carbon materials to aid in a higher degree of energy transfer thru the golf club and a more solid impact of the golf ball than shafts without Nitta 2G-Namd technology. While the line up of Mid kickpoint to High kickpoint shafts is increasing, "TOUR AD CQ" was developed in response to the voice of users who prefer the low kickpoint type. It is a model that has a firm grip with a Mid-Low kickpoint that bends like a whip, increases the head speed up to impact and easily hit the ball. By increasing the rigidity at the hand section and adjusting the rigidity difference, we have achieved an acceleration before and after impact while maintaining good tempo on the down swing from the top position. With flexible head speed and strong high trajectory, you can expect a hit that will "ConQuer" your entire golf game and golf course.

Wilson goes raw in FG Tour V6 limited edition irons

FG_TOUR_V6_RAW_3Club_Progression.jpg

The new version of Wilson’s FG Tour V6 irons has an old look to it. And that’s on purpose. The Wilson FG Tour V6 Raw irons, available Tuesday in limited quantity, will take on the rusting, unfinished look that’s been made popular among certain wedges including Wilson’s own PMP model introduced earlier this year.

Due to the raw finish, clubs will age uniquely over time so that not only will no two sets look the same but no two irons will have the same patina, either.

The idea of the raw finish is to produce clubs with less glare and a distinctive old-school look. Unlike the standard FG Tour V6 irons, the V6 Raw irons will feature a copper colored badge in the back cavity to distinguish the two models. According to the company, there’s been a preference for the raw finish among its staff players and Troy Merritt is expected to switch to the new set this week at the Travelers Championship.

Aside from the unplated finish, the FG Tour V6 Raw features the same technological approach as the original FG Tour V6 , which was first introduced in September 2016. Forged from 8620 steel throughout, the FG Tour V6 uses tungsten to selectively concentrate internal weighting in the long and middle irons. That includes a combined 20 grams of tungsten in the heel and toe of the 3- through 5-irons and 20 grams centered in the sole on the 6- and 7-iron. The weight lowers the center of gravity and provides extra stability on off-center hits on the long irons. The 8-iron through pitching wedge are solid 8620 carbon steel.

Further contributing to the feel of the FG Tour V6 irons is a centered mass in the back cavity of some 38 grams to provide more of the vibration control found in a traditional muscleback iron design. The FG Tour V6 irons have been played on tour by Wilson staff players Padraig Harrington, Kevin Streelman, Ricky Barnes and Brendan Steele.

The special limited edition FG Tour V6 Raw irons will be available both through select Wilson accounts and on Wilson.com ($1,100 for eight irons, 4-iron through gap wedge) with 30 custom shaft options available.

PGA Championship Round 1 live updates: Xander Schauffele sets course record, grabs early lead

Tony finau and sahith theegala are tied for second after thursday's opening round, but they sit three shots back from xander schauffele.

Xander Schauffele wasted no time at Valhalla on Thursday morning.

Schauffele went low to kick off the 106th PGA Championship . He posted a course-record 9-under 62 to grab an early three-shot lead over the field when he hit the clubhouse. His bogey-free round tied the lowest round in major championship history, something he's now done twice.

Schauffele finished in second last week at the Wells Fargo Championship, which marked his eighth top-10 finish so far this season on the PGA Tour. He hasn't won a major championship yet in his career, but he's inside the top 20 at every major but two since 2019. By all accounts, he's due.

Though his early lead was impressive, and it matched the largest opening-round lead in tournament history, it likely won't hold. There's still plenty of golf to be played the rest of the week in Louisville. Tiger Woods stumbled to close out his round. He made back-to-back bogeys in his final two holes and carded a 1-over 72 in the early wave. Rory McIlroy, on the other hand, made three birdies in his final five holes to get to 5-under — which has him right in the mix.

Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala are tied in second at 6-under. Robert MacYntire, Tom Hoge, Tom Kim, Thomas Detry and Collin Morikawa joined McIlroy at 5-under. Scottie Scheffler, who pulled out a wild eagle hole out to start his day, finished at 4-under.

Xander Schauffele will carry his 3-shot lead into Friday. The last two who had a lead that big after the opening round pulled off the win.

Jon Rahm gets under par

He had to throw a club, but Jon Rahm got into the red to close out his opening round on Thursday afternoon. Rahm made four birdies in his final six holes to finish with his 1-under 70.

After his four early birdies to start the round, that's a very impressive finish.

Jon Rahm today: First 12 holes: +3, -2.50 strokes gained putting Last 6 holes: -4, +1.14 strokes gained putting — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 16, 2024

Phil Mickelson just doubled the 18th, and went 4-over in his last four holes to card his 3-over 74. He was under par before that last stretch. Just a brutal finish as he's trying to make a record 28th cut at the PGA Championship this week.

Tom Kim finished with a 5-under 66, which makes him the youngest player to shoot a 66 or better to open the tournament in more than 20 years. He's T5 now, four shots back of Xander Schauffele

Tom Kim (66 today, age 21) is the youngest player to begin a @PGAChampionship with 66 or better since Sergio Garcia opened with 66 in 1999 at age 19. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 16, 2024

Rahmbo makes an appearance

It was only a matter of time, and Jon Rahm finally lost his cool. His frustration had been building all day. Of course, he scrambled for par right after this ...

😡 Jon Rahm launches his club in disgust ☠️ #PGAChampionship pic.twitter.com/s3dreSwJsP — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) May 16, 2024

And then made birdie on No. 17 to get him back to even. So the lesson for all you youngsters out there ...

Jon Rahm still saved par after this club throw. So, everything worked out for him I guess. He's 1-over now with two holes to go.

sicksicksick pic.twitter.com/n69uxL3M0i — No Laying Up (@NoLayingUp) May 16, 2024

Scottie Scheffler just went birdie-bogey-birdie to get to 4-under on the day. After stalling out a bit from his hot start, he's right back in the mix.

SO. DIALED. IN. Scottie Scheffler with a bounce back birdie! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/EqtcSMOvSl — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

Though he's a ways back from Xander Schauffele, Lefty still has a lot on the line this week at Valhalla.

Phil Mickelson moves to 1-under. He has 46 career rounds under par at the PGA Championship, second all-time to Jack Nicklaus (53 rounds). Mickelson has 27 career made cuts at the PGA, tied for most all-time with Nicklaus and Ray Floyd. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 16, 2024

This might have been the first smile we've seen from Jon Rahm all day.

SO CLOSE! Jon Rahm reeled it in on the signature hole! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/9qLFqS7UTo — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

He's at 3-over now on his back nine.

Here comes Tom Kim. He's made three birdies in his last four holes to get to 5-under on the day.

That moved him into a share of fourth alongside McIlroy, MacIntyre and Detry.

Though things have slowed down, we're still on a record scoring pace today at Valhalla.

There are currently 64 players under par at Valhalla GC. The most players under par after round 1 of the @PGAChampionship is 60 - in 2006 at Medinah CC. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 16, 2024

Thomas Detry is still scoring, but he's about the only one. He just picked up his fifth birdie of the day to get to 5-under, which has him T4.

Rickie Fowler's scorecard ...

... is a piece of art. Behold:

Scoring has definitely gotten harder as the day has gone on. Only four of the top 19 players on the leaderboard are on the course. Only one player in the top nine — Thomas Detry (-4) — is still playing.

Scheffler gets one back ...

After a bogey at five stalled his round for a moment, Scottie Scheffler took advantage of the par-5 seventh, knocking in a four-footer for birdie to get back to 3-under.

Rahm struggling ...

It's not been a good day for Jon Rahm. He's bogeyed four of his first six holes, including an absolute shank on No. 6. He missed the green by 40 yards to the left. He did birdie the seventh to slow the bleeding, but he's got a lot of work to do if he's going to get back in contention.

"Some days, it's better than others. It's just the way it is."

Tiger Woods clawed out a 1-over round to open the PGA Championship on Thursday.

Scottie Scheffler just bogeyed the fifth after landing in a greenside bunker. That dropped him back to 2-under for the day. Matching Xander Schauffele's bogey-free round is now out of the question.

Scheffler 3-under thru 4

Scottie Scheffler just birdied No. 4 to get to 3-under for the day. It's still early, but...

Scottie Scheffler is now -3 after four holes and ahead of Xander's pace. Hang on tight. — Jay Busbee (@jaybusbee) May 16, 2024

Scheffler not done

Scottie Scheffler birdies the fourth, taking him to 3-under after his first-hole eagle.

Can Scottie Scheffler follow in Wyndham Clark's footsteps?

You don't have to go back far to find the last major winner who started their week with an eagle - Wyndham Clark did it last summer at LACC when he won the U.S. Open. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 16, 2024

Scottie Scheffler's opening eagle

LOUISVILLE — Scottie Scheffler stood at the first tee nine strokes behind clubhouse leader Xander Schauffele. Two swings later, Scheffler had sliced Schauffele's lead to seven.

More on the No. 1-ranked golfer in the world's start from on the ground at Valhalla.

The last time the PGA Championship was played at Valhalla, Rory McIlroy won. Since his two major titles in 2014, however, he's come up short every single time.

But McIlroy is back near the top of the leaderboard after his opening round 66 on Thursday in Louisville.

Scottie Scheffler eagles immediately

Scottie Scheffler wasn't going to let anybody forget about him. He just holed his second shot at the PGA Championship from the middle of the fairway to immediately get to 2-under, because of course he did.

Scottie Scheffler has ARRIVED. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/Ky3KNeGNb6 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

DeChambeau!

Bryson DeChambeau was toiling through his round, sitting at even par through 15 holes. And then ...

ON THE MONEY 🎯 Bryson DeChambeau for eagle! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/Gz24VikAGQ — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

That eagle at No. 7 (he started on the back nine) put him at 2-under and into the hunt (somewhat).

Xander Schauffele is now the first person to ever shoot a 62 in a round at a major championship multiple times.

More on Schauffele's historic start from Jay Busbee on the ground at Valhalla.

Round 1 so far ...

Here's a quick recap on the day so far:

- Xander Schauffele has set a course, PGA and major (tied) record with a 9-under 62. Yeah, he's in first, three shots clear of ...

- Tony Finau, who's just ahead of ...

- A collection of big names that includes: Rory McIlroy (-5), Brooks Koepka (-4) and Cam Smith (-3)

- Tiger Woods bogeyed his last two holes and is at +1.

- The morning tee times look to have the advantage as they got out before the course dried out. The afternoon crew won't be hitting to the same soft greens. That wave includes world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who's about to tee off.

Cam Smith makes things interesting

This is just Cam Smith hitting his second shot on No. 7 out of the water ... and ultimately saving par.

Cam Smith made par from here ... #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/BY5ZFCiH45 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

Rory McIlroy in T3

Rory McIlroy missed a long birdie putt at the ninth, but he's right in the mix after a solid opening round. McIlroy posted a 5-under 66, thanks to four birdies on his back nine, and now sits in T3.

It was his 19th career round of 66 or lower at a major.

Rory McIlroy: 19th career round of 66 or lower in major championships Most rounds of 66 or better in majors, last 30 seasons: Tiger Woods, 28 Rory McIlroy, 19 Phil Mickelson, 18 Brooks Koepka, 17 — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) May 16, 2024

Tiger's bogey-bogey finish

After briefly getting into the red, Tiger Woods stumbled a bit to close out his opening round at Valhalla. He ended his day with a pair of bogeys after back-to-back 3-putts.

He finished with a 1-over 72. That has him in T55, 11 shots back of Xander Schauffele.

A perfect scorecard for Xander Schauffele.

Xander Schauffele sets course record

Xander Schauffele's historic round is now officially in the books.

Schauffele posted a 9-under 62 to open the PGA Championship. That set a new course record at Valhalla, and gave him a 3-shot lead over the field in the early wave.

Schauffele's bogey-free round surpassed José María Olazábal, who fired a 63 in his third round at Valhalla in 2000. The 62 tied the lowest round at a major championship in history, too, something he's now done twice.

Cementing his name in the record books. pic.twitter.com/1vK5Btga5A — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 16, 2024

Max Homa bouncing back

Max Homa is finally making moves. He's just made his third straight birdie, and his sixth of the day, to get to 3-under.

Tiger Woods back under par

Finally, after missing a few chances earlier, Tiger Woods is back in the red. Woods sank a birdie putt at the 7th, which marked his first birdie at a par 5 today.

He's still well back of Xander Schauffele, but he's T17 with two holes to go in his opening round. Not a bad spot to be.

Woods with the early walk! 🐦 Tiger is in red figures @PGAChampionship . pic.twitter.com/RQMvRU0ulV — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 16, 2024

Rory is hanging in there

After nearly landing in the bunker at No. 5, Rory McIlroy just pulled out a birdie chip-in. He's at 3-under now in T4.

Xander Schauffele's lead is at four now after a simple two-putt birdie at the par-5 7th. He's at 9-under, and seriously looking at the new course record at Valhalla.

X is most definitely givin' it to ya today, what a start pic.twitter.com/IwoigVoF8k — CJ Fogler account may or may not be notable (@cjzero) May 16, 2024

The plight of Xander

Here's what Xander Schauffele is trying to overcome:

No, he hasn't won a major yet, but he's ALWAYS in contention. Outside of two missed cuts (Masters 2022, PGA 2021) and a T41 at the 2019 Open, he's finished inside the top 20 at every major since 2019 — 17 of the last 20. That includes nine top 10s.

He's got the game to win, he just needs to finish.

Tiger Woods just missed a very makeable birdie putt at No. 5. He's hanging out at even par with four holes to go in his opening round.

Xander Schauffele is just a few birdies away from a historic opening round at Valhalla.

What's in play for Xander: Lowest score at a PGA Championship round at Valhalla was Jose Maria Olazabal, who put a 63 on the board in 2000's Round 3, per @EliasSports . Twelve players have shot 65. — Jay Busbee (@jaybusbee) May 16, 2024

Xander takes 3-shot lead

It's almost too easy for Xander Schauffele out there right now. He tapped-in for another birdie after just missing an eagle at No. 4 to grab a 3-shot lead over the field.

Xander Schauffele is on 🔥🔥🔥 And it's a tap in for the 3-shot lead! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/gvivxfLwS7 — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

Rory looked pretty happy with this approach at No. 1.

HOW DID THIS NOT GO IN!? 😱 Rory McIlroy is pin hunting! #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/At8fOqxTFS — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 16, 2024

He's at 2-under now after a birdie to open his back nine.

Xander birdies again

Xander Schauffele just birdied again at the par-4 2nd. It's one of the hardest holes on the course, and he stuck his approach just a few feet from the cup for an easy birdie putt.

He's at 6-under now with a two shot lead.

Rory has cooled off

After a hot start, things have cooled off for Rory McIlroy, but he did manage to salvage par after making a mess of the 18th:

He'll make the turn 1-under, four back of Schauffele.

Tiger makes turn at +1

Tiger finally hit a fairway and ... couldn't convert. Put his second on the par 5 over the green, hit a poor chip, leaving himself with a lengthy birdie putt that he could not convert.

Here comes Tony

Tony Finau has entered the mix, with four birdies in his first six holes.
