Aqaba's history dates back to 4,000 BC and was once a key Roman port. With year-round sun, you can enjoy watersports and explore the coral reefs of the Red Sea that teem with brightly coloured fishes. Magnificent Petra, an ancient city carved out of stone, and one of the World's Seven Wonders, is nearby. Back in Aqaba, visit the 13th-century castle fortress, archaeological museum and mosque and enjoy a traditional lamb dish with yogurt and rice accompanied by mint tea or sweet Turkish coffee.

A few of the city of Port Aqaba, Jordan.

Aqaba (for Petra), Jordan

Jordan may appear at first glance like a vast, empty land, but its territory has been inhabited for 6,000 years and it is home to an enormous number of historic sites and natural wonders. Most of them are easily accessible just off of the King’s Highway, which stretches from the capital, Amman, down to Aqaba on the Red Sea. As the country’s only port, Aqaba has long been linked to the legend of Lawrence of Arabia, or T.E. Lawrence, and to the famous 1962 film by Sir David Lean. The massive Aqaba flagpole is, at 131 meters (430 feet), one of the tallest in the world and commemorates the Great Arab Revolt of 1916 against the Ottoman Empire in which Lawrence played a key role. Aqaba is a decidedly quieter place now than in the heyday of revolt, whether one comes for the deepwater dive spots, duty-free shopping or its new high-end residential and resort district. Old Aqaba, with a fort that dates from the era of Christian crusaders, continues to be a wonderfully atmospheric neighborhood. There, after a long day in the desert heat, visitors can seek out a Turkish bath for a massage and scrub or take a break from exploring at any number of cafés that overlook the port.

Aqaba Jordan Port Guide

This ancient port city bustles with trade traffic and an undeniable energy, connecting Jordan with other parts of the world. Aqaba is home to many resorts and beachy activities like windsurfing and snorkeling. Scuba divers will call Aqaba their paradise, where the warmth of the water and crystal visibility make for incredible Red Sea wreck diving.

While stopped in Aqaba on an India cruise , you’ll find historic and cultural activities around every corner. Take a trip beyond Aqaba to the ancient ruins of Petra, an archaeological icon of pink stone that has long been Jordan’s most famous site. Don’t miss Wadi Rum, a famously protected desert where dunes, mountains, and wilderness collide. Stand in awe of the site where Lawrence of Arabia was said to have passed through in the early 20th century. Beyond the natural wonders of this part of Jordan, you’ll find a truly warm-natured city where tradition collides with modern life on your Aqaba cruise.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to aqaba.

You may not have heard of the ancient ruins of Petra before, but you’d definitely know them at first sight. Featured in movie franchises and recognizable for its rose-colored stone, Petra was first occupied by human beings nearly 10,000 years ago, where inhabitants carved the elaborate Treasury into columns, temples, and alters. Tour this UNESCO World Heritage site during your time in Aqaba for an afternoon in the desert you’ll never forget.

Ever wanted to effortlessly float on your back? You can while in the waters of the Dead Sea, one of the saltiest bodies of water in the entire world. You’ll need to plan a day around this, however, since the mouth of the Dead Sea is a three-hour drive from Aqaba.

Arguably, Wadi Rum is the most famous site in Jordan. Head to this natural wonder, called the “Valley of the Moon,” where your admission fee goes toward keeping this incredible site protected. Ride camels into the desert wilderness and take in the chasms and mountain ranges during a half-day excursion. Learn about the culture of the Bedouins and enjoy an Arabian afternoon tea ceremony.

Aqaba Aquarium

Animal and marine lovers must see the species of fish that inhabit the Red Sea and the waters of Jordan. You’ll learn what to expect from wildlife when you swim or snorkel the area and discover the coral system of Aqaba, too. The aquarium is connected to the Aqaba Marine Science Station, a perfect activity for an educational afternoon in Aqaba.

Learn More About Aqaba Shore Excursions

Top things to do in aqaba, snorkel and scuba in the red sea.

Snorkeling in the Red Sea is an essential experience on a cruise to Aqaba, Jordan, where colorful reefs and vibrant sea life miraculously thrive in salty waters. Many of the species here can’t be found in any other body of water in the world. Wrecked tanks and cargo ships contrast against bright coral, making this a feast for divers’ eyes.

See the Ruins of Ayla

Close your eyes and imagine what ancient Aqaba must have looked like thousands of years ago. These ruins were once the site of Aqaba’s central, ancient port. Seeing them offers a step back in time and makes for a quick excursion on the way to other destinations in downtown Aqaba.

Explore Aqaba Fort

In the 12th century, the Crusaders built what are now ruins of the Aqaba Fort, and today you can see these ruins before learning more about the history of this region of Jordan at the Aqaba Archaeological Museum. History buffs on one of our cruises to Jordan shouldn’t miss out on an educational afternoon at the ruins.

Unearth the World’s Oldest Church

Near the ruins of Ayla is a site that scholars consider the oldest Christian church in the world, built in the third century. While you’re touring the other ruins, this church is a must for history buffs and those interested in early Christian artifacts.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Aqaba Cruise Port

Aqaba’s culinary scene has a variety of must-try dishes that personify Jordan’s rich history. Of course, there are classics like hummus, falafel, and shawarma which have quickly risen in popularity all over the world for their freshness, but Aqaba cuisine also has tons of surprises. The coffee and tea is different than in other parts of the world. Their special method of preparation makes them more bitter than their Western equivalents. Try kunafa, a traditional filo pastry with delicious, melty goat cheese inside. A filo pastry filled with spinach is another popular variation. Another must-have? The official breakfast of Jordan, called foul, which consists of savory fava beans mashed into a liquid-like dipping sauce with olive oil, lemon, and garlic. Served with hot flatbread, it’s regularly offered as a side dish for every meal in Jordan.

Culture & History of the Aqaba Cruise Port

Aqaba practically opened the country of Jordan to international trade and commerce along the Silk Road, dating back to the occupation of the Ottoman empire during the 14th century. The Turks held control of Jordan until World War I, when various Western nations took over. Eventually, Jordan gained independence in 1946. Today, Aqaba plays a significant part in the Jordanian economy as a central trading port and tourist destination, thanks to incredible sights like Wadi Rum, Petra, and the beautiful Red Sea.

The culture of Aqaba is heavily influenced by the Bedouin population of Jordan and the surrounding regions, specifically the national dance, called the dabke. While on one of our cruises to Jordan, make a point to see live music featuring traditional instruments like the shababa and the Jordanian bagpipes, gerbah. Music is deeply woven into the fabric of Jordan’s history and culture. The people of Jordan value respect and politeness. Be aware that dressing modestly is hugely important during your time in Aqaba, which will show locals that you respect their traditions.

Aqaba Port Facilities & Location

The port of Aqaba is a commercial port, so it’s more focused on trading and unloading than cruise and tourism traffic. You won’t find a terminal or tourism information desk here, but there is a free shuttle service that takes cruise passengers and others to downtown Aqaba, which is about a 15-minute ride away.

Transportation in Aqaba

There are a few main ways to get around while on your cruise to Aqaba, Jordan. Taxis are plentiful on the ground in the city, and you’ll find them easy to hail and generally inexpensive. There are the standard yellow taxis as well as green and blue cars. The public bus system is also efficient for riders, and a one-way ride costs less than one Jordanian Dinar. Note that the desert climate can make walking for long periods difficult. Be sure to schedule regular breaks for water and rest while you’re exploring Aqaba, particularly if you’re visiting during the hotter months.

Shopping Near the Aqaba Cruise Port

Because the Port of Aqaba is a commercial port, Jordan cruise passengers can’t do much shopping here. Venture downtown for the bazaars and restaurants using the complimentary shuttle system at the port. Due to the hot climate, shops regularly close from 2 to 6 pm to escape the heat of the day.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JD). Locals will pronounce this “jay-dee” in conversation, so be aware you’ll probably hear that while shopping or bargaining with vendors. Credit cards are commonly used in Jordan, and there are ATMs throughout the city of Aqaba. The US dollar is commonly accepted when you pay with cash as well. Tip around 10% for guides, taxi drivers, and restaurant servers if there isn’t a service charge already included in your bill. Generally, tipping isn’t a big practice in Jordan.

Aqaba Cruise

Aqaba Cruise

When you disembark from your MSC Jordan cruise in  Aqaba , you can enjoy its idyllic, sunny setting on the shores of the  Red Sea , at the country’s southernmost tip. From something of a dowdy backwater, in the last decade or so  Aqaba  has transformed itself into a pleasant leisure destination. Hotels at all grades are springing up in the town as well as at luxury waterfront developments up and down the coast.

The city center of Aqaba forms a dense network of streets and alleys clustered just behind the beach road (called the “ Corniche ”).

Some of the  best diving and snorkeling in the world  is centered on the  unspoiled coral reefs  that hug the coast just south of the town – an engaging contrast with the nearby desert attractions of  Petra  and  Wadi Rum .

Don't miss out on an unforgettable  shore excursion  to Petra . Tucked away in a remote valley basin in the heart of southern Jordan’s  Shara mountains  and shielded from the outside world behind an impenetrable barrier of rock, Petra remains wreathed in mystery.

Since a Western adventurer stumbled on the site in 1812, it has fired imaginations, its  grandeur and dramatic setting  pushing it into the realms of legend. Today, it’s almost as if time has literally drawn a veil over the once-great city, which grew wealthy enough on the caravan trade to challenge the might of Rome: two millennia of wind and rain have blurred the sharp edges of its ornate classical facades and rubbed away at its soft sandstone to expose vivid bands of colour beneath, putting the whole scene into soft focus.

Experience Egypt & Jordan – 5* Cruise

We had a wonderful trip to Egypt and Jordan!! Our guide, Mina Nash (the King) was so very informative and made our trip so much fun. We saw unbelievable antiquities and it was an adventure of a lifetime! This tour was jam packed! We were so sorry to leave Mina behind and travel on to Jordan. Dr Ahmad Ababnah was also wonderful. He helped bring Jordan’s history to life! I would advise anyone to take this trip with Timeless Tours!

Egypt & Jordan Jewel with Nile Boat Cruise Tour

Egypt & Jordan Jewel with Nile Boat Cruise

This is a very fast paced tour with early mornings and long bus rides to get to the next destination. It includes bucket list sites i.e. the pyramids, the Great Sphinx, temples, a Nile cruise, Valley of the Kings, Petra, Wadi Rum and more. Our group in Egypt agreed we would rather pay the admission and optional tour costs when the final payment is made or have it included as part of the tour price. This is the first tour I have been on where admission prices have not been included. The guides in both Egypt and Jordan were a wealth of knowledge regarding the history and significance of places visited and the customs and culture of the people. They were amazing,,, friendly, fun and readily accommodated the group. We were met upon our arrival in Egypt and assisted with obtaining Visas and getting through customs, then driven to the hotel. There was a meet and greet in the evening to meet our guide and our fellow travelmates. We were a group of 34. Our guide Nabil gave us an overview of the tour and other pertinent information i.e. drinking water, safety, currencies used etc. Jamal was our guide in Jordan for the group of 16. I did not give this 5 stars because there were some hotel and itinerary changes in both Egypt and Jordan. The original itinerary for Egypt stated 2 intra Egypt flights (i.e. between Cairo and Aswan). Instead, we had a long 7 hour bus ride back to Cairo. The Monte Carlo ship for the Nile Cruise in not a 5 star luxury ship. It is an old ship that needs painting and refurbishing in the rooms. One of the engines overheated causing fumes to permeate into some rooms. The engine was shut down and we were late arriving at our disembarkation port. Arrival in Amman was good but we were driven to the Misk Hotel (another change) and just dropped off. We were told to meet our guide at 8am but were given no information about what we could do eg. museums, shopping etc, or how to get there eg. what taxis to use, how far it was to the town centre etc. There was nothing around the hotel to do or look at. The rooms were very small for 2 people with suitcases but the food was good. The accommodations in Wadi Rum were also changed. The original camp had ensuite bathrooms. The camp we were put up in was a tent with 2 cots. There was sand in the bed. Many slept with their clothes on because they didn't know how clean the sheets were. There was a communal bathroom with 2 showers. It was not very clean...the mirrors were covered in water spots, one needed to remember to bring toilet paper because most times there was none, the shower heads were missing in the men's showers. The camp was not well lit at night for using the facilities. The food at dinner was adequate but at breakfast there were only a few boiled eggs, some stale pita and jam. The so called jeeps were not jeeps. They were beat up old pick up trucks with wooden planks for seats and some drivers were not at all pleasant. There were not enough vehicles for all of us and our luggage so we had to pay for another vehicle. In Egypt we were in a comfortable touring bus where luggage was stowed below. In Jordan, we were crammed into a small Toyota tour van where luggage was piled up behind the last seat. There was no place for backpacks (they were kept on our laps) and no leg room. It was very uncomfortable travelling for 5 hours in this bus. The stop at the Dead Sea was at O Beach. There were 150 unsafe stairs down to the water. Many of the steps were broken pieces of board with metal sticking up. The washrooms were dirty, had no paper at all and the flush handles were broken. Most of us think the tour in Jordan should be 5 days instead of 4 to spread out the driving. All in all, we saw everything we wanted to see in Egypt and Jordan. We were in awe of the sites and extremely pleased with our wonderful guides. We were disappointed though with the itinerary and hotel changes that were not the quality as originally provided when we booked the tour.

He is personable and was attentive to each member of the tour group throughout the tour. How lucky were we to have Mo as our tour guide!! Thanks so much Mo for looking after us and giving us so much of your knowledge and expertise to ensure our tour of Egypt was amazing and so memorable!!

Overall it was a very good trip. The sites were outstanding and all of our guides were very good also. The food at the large hotels was good but at the others it was only mediocre. I enjoyed the cruise down the Nile but the ship needed a lot of upgrading.

However, we highly recommend it for Egypt, Jordan, and Cairo. Although these destinations are perfectly safe, having a guide from Vacations to Go handle everything made our journey much smoother. They are local experts, serving as the "on the ground" tour company, and their proficiency significantly enhanced our experience while alleviating potential frustrations. Booking a trip with them is a favor to yourself – the level of service is top-notch. We spent three weeks exploring, and the sights were so captivating that we wished we didn't have to return home. It's a fantastic vacation choice, especially for Western travelers concerned about safety.

12-Day Best of Egypt & Jordan Tour Tour

12-Day Best of Egypt & Jordan Tour

We truly had the most magnificent Jordan and Egypt 12-day vacation, everything ran seamlessly and everybody involved, from the airport representatives to drivers, security, and historical guides were all wonderful, expert, and friendly individuals. In Jordan, our driver Ali was amazing – his suggestion to stop at Lebanese House Restaurant between Jerash and Petra was great, probably one of our best meals throughout the trip, our guide at Petra, was wonderful. He was knowledgeable, flexible, and went out of his way to make the tour interesting to all of us

Festive Road to Jordan with Cruise - 16 days

This tour was by far the best thing we’ve ever done. Our friends and family were definitely apprehensive of us coming to Egypt and Jordan but we never felt unsafe once. The professionalism of On the Go is top notch. All of our airport transfers, hotel check ins, bus picks ups were effortless. MoMo our guide was beyond fabulous. He went above and beyond what he had to do and truly made our tour something we’ll never forget. He ran our tour like a well oiled machine, always a step ahead of us ensuring everything happened seemlessly. His knowledge of the different sites we visited was also amazing. Standing at the base of the pyramids on Christmas Day is something I’m never going to be able to beat. If you want the tour of a lifetime, then this is for you. So much jam packed into one trip and so damn worth it. We made friends for life on our tour and we’ll definitely be doing another On the Go tour. MoMo we love you!!!

River cruises in egypt and jordan reviews.

We had really enjoyed this history, sensory overload of wonderful Egypt. Our tour guide “Tiger” was very organised, extremely knowledgeable and made us feel safe at all times. He was constantly checking with us to see if we required any further information, great areas to view the magnificent sights of Egypt. I have rated this tour “Good”, this is no reflection of “Tiger” he was Excellent. The rating of good is due to the river cruise where the ship was not ready for tour due to “refurbishing” which was not completed when we boarded. We will say that the staff on board were very attentive to our needs - the meals were so flavourful. We would recommend this tour. Thank you ?
Tour was well organized! The guide for the Egypt portion was very experienced The guide for Jordan was just ok. There were many occasions when he could be more organized. He didn’t explain what to expect what the plans were for the next day. Much confusion resulted from that. Many things look disorganized The boat cruise was terrible. Frequent problems with steady water supply , Not one day was without problems. The boat was not well maintained. The highlights of the tour were the pyramids, Abu Simbel. The hot air ballooning was a highlight despite reservations from the tour organizers
In general, I was really happy with this tour. Everything we saw was terrific and impressive. The hotels were really good. Our first tour guide was OK, friendly enough, but didn't seem really tuned in or passionate about what he was explaining to us. He tended to enjoy the younger people on the tour more. The guide during the Nile cruise was great, super knowledgeable and super in to us and what he was telling us. Our guide in Jordan was also super knowledgeable and informative. An extra cost tour that was a total waste of money was the star night at Wadi Rum. It was way over crowded with badly behaved children. There were too many people and not enough help to make sure we saw anything through the telescopes. When we sat in a circle within an enclosed area for further star information, we were sat with our backs to the wall and what we were supposed to view. The young woman who was speaking didn't seem to know what she was talking about or doing and kept on saying "Don't judge me." The other workers just let her babble on. The overnight trains were a little primitive but interesting to experience. The trip was strenuous and it was very hot. I am older and it was hard work, but I was warned and chose to do it anyhow. Overall, it was a very good experience!!!

Israel-Gaza latest: Netanyahu issues defiant comments after Biden warning - as world awaits Rafah decision and Palestinians flee

Benjamin Netanyahu vows Israelis are ready to "fight with their fingernails" after Joe Biden said he would halt weapon supplies if the country launched a full-scale offensive in Rafah. However, Israel's leader has stopped short of explicitly saying one would be ordered.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected to submit a report to Congress as soon as today that is highly critical of Israel's conduct in Gaza but which stops short of concluding it has violated the terms for its use of US weapons, it is being reported.

A story from Axios that cites three officials said the report, said the State Department was reviewing the use of weapons by Israel and six other countries engaged in different armed conflicts.

It comesa after Reuters reported this week that the Biden administration was set to miss a Wednesday deadline to report to Congress on whether Israel is violating international humanitarian law in Gaza.

A national security memorandum, NSM-20, issued by Joe Biden in February, required the department to report to Congress by May 8 how credible are Israel's assurances that its use of U.S. weapons does not violate US or international law.

On Tuesday, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told a news briefing the NSM-20 report was not yet finished but the department was working "very hard" to complete it.

As we have been reporting, Israel has been carrying out a series of deadly airstrikes in Rafah while warning of a full-scale assault on the city.

Israel has officially ordered around 100,000 residents of eastern Rafah to flee to al Mawasi.

Analysis indicates suggests that the number fleeing the area may be larger than this.

More than one million Palestinian civilians had sought shelter in Rafah, many previously displaced from other parts of Gaza after Israel's orders to evacuate from there

And Israel's initial push into the city has disrupted the flow of aid into the territory as a whole, raising new concerns about the dire humanitarian situation getting worse.

Most of Gaza's 2.3 million people are suffering from hunger and the northern part of the territory experiencing "full-blown famine"

The UN's agency for Palestinian refugees has temporarily closed its East Jerusalem headquarters after "Israeli extremists" set fire to the perimeter following weeks of repeated attacks.

Philippe Lazzarini, the agency's head, said in a post on X: "This evening, Israeli residents set fire twice to the perimeter of the UNRWA Headquarters in occupied East Jerusalem.

"This took place while UNRWA and other UN Agencies’ staff were on the compound. While there were no casualties among our staff, the fire caused extensive damage to the outdoor areas.

"The UNRWA headquarters has on its grounds a petrol and diesel station for the Agency's fleet of cars.

"Our director with the help of other staff had to put out the fire themselves as it took the Israeli fire extinguishers and police a while before they turned up. A crowd accompanied by armed men were witnessed outside the compound chanting 'Burn down the United Nations'."

"While there were no casualties among our staff, the fire caused extensive damage to the outdoor areas," he added, sayng that UNRWA staff had put out the fire themselves.

It followed two months of "Israeli extremists staging protests outside the UNRWA compound", he said.

He described Thursday's arson attempts as "an outrageous development".

"Once again, the lives of UN staff were at a serious risk," he said.

Sky News analysis of satellite imagery has shows that hundreds of tents in Rafah have been removed as Palestinians flee the city, including areas far outside the official evacuation zone.

The evacuation order was first published at 7.51am local time on Monday. Airstrikes followed, with ground operations beginning that evening. By Tuesday morning, Israel had captured the Rafah border crossing.

Images taken on Sunday evening show an estimated 321 tents in camps near the crossing. By Tuesday morning, however, there were just 62 - a decrease of 81%.

Read the full story below:

Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israelis are ready to fight with their "fingernails" - in a thinly veiled rebuff to US President Joe Biden's warning that arms supplies could be withheld over the planned assault on Rafah.

The  Israeli  prime minister said in a video statement: "If we have to stand alone, we will stand alone.

"If we need to, we will fight with our fingernails. But we have much more than fingernails."

Reuters has cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying the country will press ahead with its offensive in Rafa and elsewhere in the territory.

However, Mr Netanyahu has not explicitly that a full-scale of assault Rafah would be ordered, and the world waits to see whether he will do so in defiance of the US president.

The Israeli leader later said in an interview on US television  that he hopes he and Mr Biden can overcome their disagreements over the Gaza war.

"We often had our agreements but we've had our disagreements. We've been able to overcome them," Netanyahu told the Dr Phil Primetime show.

The conservative prime minister's comments in the video statement were echoed by the other two voting members of his war cabinet - Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and centrist former Defence Minister Benny Gantz.

"I turn to Israel's enemies as well as to our best of friends and say - the State of Israel cannot be subdued," Mr Gallant said in a speech.

Mr Gantz, meanwhile, voiced appreciation for what the Israeli military has described as unprecedented US support and supplies in the war.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and wider tensions in the Middle East.

The conflict in Gaza appears to have reached a significant inflection point, after US president Joe Biden said America would halt offensive arms supplies to Israel if it launches a full-scale attack on the city of Rafah.

Despite widespread warnings of disastrous consequences for innocent civilians - tens of thousands of whom have already been killed in Israel's devastating assault on Gaza, where huge swathes of the population are already on the brink of starvation - Reuters has cited an unnamed Israeli official as saying the country will press ahead with its offensive in Rafa and elsewhere in the territory.

Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed Israel will "stand alone" if it has to, saying: "If we need to, we will fight with our fingernails. But we have much more than fingernails."

However, it remains to be seen whether he will opt to defy the US president entirely with by ordering an all-out invasion of Rafah - although we may get a clearer idea of that today.

Here are the other key lines from the past 24 hours:

  • More than 80,000 people have fled Rafah - where more than one million Palestinian civilians have sought shelter, many previously displaced from other parts of Gaza after Israel's orders to evacuate from there;
  • Israel's initial push into Rafah has disrupted the flow of aid into Gaza, raising new concerns about the dire humanitarian situation getting worse. Most of Gaza's 2.3 million people are suffering from hunger and the northern part of the territory experiencing "full-blown famine";
  • Airstrikes launched by Israel in Rafah reduced homes to rubble;
  • Israeli president Isaac Herzog publicly thanked the US president after far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said "Hamas loves Biden".

That's all for our live coverage for the moment.

Our regular updates will continue tomorrow.

UK forces have airdropped 110 tonnes of aid for Gaza civilians today.

The RAF completed its 11th airdrop today, which include ready-to-eat meals, water, rice, tinned goods and flour, from 120 parachutes.

The aid was dropped along the northern coastline of Gaza.

The UK began conducting airdrops in late March, as part of the Jordanian international initiative.

Defence secretary Grant Shapps said the UK's commitment to delivering large quantities of aid to those most in need was "unwavering".

"Given the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, we deployed RFA Cardigan Bay to the Eastern Mediterranean to support efforts to build a temporary pier to deliver crucial humanitarian assistance," he said.

By Mark Stone , US correspondent

All decisions have intended consequences and unintended consequences.

The intended consequence of President Biden's threat to stop sending some weapons to Israel is straightforward: to stop the Israeli military from going into Rafah without a clear, deliverable plan for the civilian population.

But there are so many unintended consequences.

Both geopolitically and domestically for President Biden this decision could come to haunt him.

Even before we consider the unintended consequence, there is a key point: the perils of setting red lines.

Too often they turn out to be flawed tools of geo-political diplomacy.

What if Netanyahu bulldozes through the red line and invades Rafah?

He's probably got enough American weapons in storage to do that.

Will Biden stick to his threat to pull weapons delivery? Or will he relent? What message will both of those choices send, far and wide?

That brings us on to the unintended consequences. First, the regional consequences:

  • Could there be a greater numbers of civilian casualties? If Netanyahu continues with his Rafah operation but with a dwindling supply of American weapons (so-called smart bombs) then he will use less sophisticated "dumb bombs". This could cause even more civilian casualties;
  • What message does it sends regionally? That America could be seen to abandon Israel (despite that not being what Biden said) will not be lost on countries around the world. It suggests that America is flaky with its alliances. For months, Biden has dismissed calls to limit weapons supplies. Now he's U-turned. Gulf countries already wonder about the stability of America as an ally. While they will agree with his announcement last night, the wider message it sends will resonate;
  • Does it embolden Iran? Limiting weapons to its oldest Middle Eastern ally at a time of profound danger for Israel is being seen by some as a gift for Tehran;
  • What impact will it have on ceasefire negotiations? It's logical that Hamas may see this decision as weakening Israel and may therefore hold out in the ongoing negotiations to get more out of them.

Then there are the domestic political consequences.

They were spelt out by his presidential opponent, Donald Trump who said: "What Biden is doing with respect to Israel is disgraceful. If any Jewish person voted for Joe Biden, they should be ashamed of themselves. He's totally abandoned Israel and nobody can believe it."

President Biden has already alienated key sections of the voter population with his existing Gaza policy.

By supporting Netanyahu unequivocally, he has angered key Arab-American populations in places like Michigan - a state he needs to win in November. Beyond that, students (many of whom would be natural Biden voters) say they now can't vote for him and "genocide Joe" is their cry.

Now, with his weapons announcement, he risks alienating Jewish-American voters too. Many are deeply angry at what they see as an abandonment of the Jewish State.

His badly articulated insistence that he will still have Israel's back in terms of defence will be lost on many voters. They see only the headline.

Remember too that pretty much all Republicans are against every lever he pulls to rein in Israel; they want nothing less than unequivocal support for Israel.

More than that though - a significant number of his own Democrats are also uneasy about America limiting weapons for Israel. Only the progressive left of his party support his move.

It is a perilous political push-me-pull-you and the election is six months away.

Joe Biden has said that he will not supply offensive weapons that Israel could use to launch an all-out assault on Rafah.

He said that the US was still committed to Israel's defence and would supply iron dome rocket interceptors and other defensive arms but that if Israel goes into Rafah, "we're not going to supply the weapons and artillery shells used".

Here, our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall takes a deeper look at what the warning means...

Diamondbacks survive nail-biting 9th inning to earn series win over Reds

Diamondbacks southpaw Joe Mantiply stranded runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday. Arizona captured the opening two contests of the series and won a third straight game for the first time this season.

The D-backs opted not to use their closer fresh off the injured list, as Kevin Ginkel received the opportunity to save the ballgame over Paul Sewald — who made his season debut Tuesday.

Ginkel entered the ninth with a 4-2 lead and battled leadoff hitter Jake Fraley for 10 pitches, resulting in a walk. Manager Torey Lovullo pulled Ginkel with one out after back-to-back singles, as the game-tying run was on third base in a 4-3 game.

Mantiply saved the day with a strikeout of Reds left-handed pinch hitter Will Benson, and Jonathan India flew out to right field.

Sewald threw 15 pitches in Tuesday’s 6-2 victory, but since he missed the first month-plus of the season with an oblique strain, the D-backs avoided using him on back-to-back nights.

Arizona (17-20) has yet to sweep a series and will have a chance to Thursday against a Reds club (16-20) that has dropped seven straight games.

Mantiply also saved a Jordan Montgomery win, as the veteran left-hander gave Arizona seven strong innings with two earned runs while fighting through a few jams.

Jordan Montgomery does his job

Montgomery collected his third quality start in four outings with the club, getting back on track after he allowed six runs against the Dodgers last week (following the bee game).

This was not the smoothest of Montgomery’s starts thus far, as the Reds collected four hits in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made an error on a ball in the corner, but he recorded an assist and made a sliding grab to help limit the damage. The Reds tied the game 2-2 in the fourth on a Jeimer Candelario double, and Montgomery had to fight out of a jam after walking two in the fifth inning.

But a five-pitch sixth inning allowed Montgomery to come back out for the seventh. He recorded two quick outs before play stopped after a changeup in the dirt bounced up and caught home plate umpire Adam Hamari below the belt. Montgomery induced an India bounce out once play resumed, as he retired the final seven hitters he faced.

Montgomery threw 95 pitches and allowed an average exit velocity of 83.6 mph. As a point of reference, Braves starter Max Fried has an average exit velocity of 83.6 mph this season, which is second lowest in MLB among 124 qualified starters.

To start the series, Arizona starters Zac Gallen and Montgomery combined for 13 innings and two earned runs.

With inclement weather nearby threatening to stop the ballgame, the Diamondbacks took a notable 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning on three straight singles from Gurriel, Eugenio Suarez and Gabriel Moreno. Moreno slapped a Fernando Cruz splitter below the zone into left field for the go-ahead RBI, charged to starting pitcher Graham Ashcraft.

A regulation or official game is considered when the away team has made 15 outs and the home team is leading, or once the home team has made 15 outs.

Suarez delivered what turned out to be a game-saving insurance solo home run in the eighth, his first homer since April 12. It was Suarez’s 99th career home run at Great American Ballpark, which he called home to great success with the Reds from 2015-21.

NYC mayor condemns chokehold death: 'Jordan Neely did not deserve to die'

"His death is a tragedy that never should have happened," Mayor Eric Adams said.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the death of Jordan Neely Wednesday, who died after a fellow subway passenger was captured on video putting him in a chokehold.

"Jordan Neely did not deserve to die," Adams said in prepared remarks Wednesday amid growing calls for an arrest in the case, including from Neely's family.

"Jordan Neely's life mattered. He was suffering from severe mental illness, but that was not the cause of his death. His death is a tragedy that never should have happened," the mayor said, referring to Neely as "a Black man like me."

"No family should have to suffer a loss like this," Adams said.

Adams, a moderate Democrat, has been criticized by progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for not more strongly condemning the actions of the individual who put Neely in the chokehold. In his first comments on the incident last week, Adams said in a statement, in part, "Any loss of life is tragic. There's a lot we don't know about what happened here, so I'm going to refrain from commenting further."

PHOTO: New York police officers respond to the scene where a fight was reported on a subway train, May 1, 2023, in New York.

A grand jury is likely to weigh in on the case as soon as this week, law enforcement sources told ABC News. A grand jury would determine whether criminal charges are warranted, according to the sources.

Neely, a homeless man, died after another subway passenger held him in a chokehold for several minutes on May 1, according to witnesses and police. The 30-year-old's death has been ruled a homicide by the medical examiner's office.

Some witnesses reportedly told police that Neely was yelling and harassing passengers on the train before being subdued by the other passenger.

According to police sources, Neely had a documented mental health history. Neely had been previously arrested for several incidents on the subway, though it's unclear how many, if any, led to convictions.

During his 15-minute remarks on Wednesday, Adams pushed for expanded mental health services. He touted a bill he introduced last year intended to give the state more authority to intervene to assist people suffering from mental illness and encouraged the legislature to pass it.

"We cannot and will not accept this state of affairs," Adams said. "We will not walk by those in need, step over those who are suffering or ignore those calls for help. We will respond with care, compassion and action."

The mayor did not mention the circumstances of Neely's death or Daniel Penny, the man whom a bystander filmed putting Neely in a chokehold on the subway train.

PHOTO: New York City Mayor Eric Adams attends a New York City Police Academy graduation ceremony at Madison Square Garden, April 24, 2023, in New York.

Police sources told ABC News that Penny was not specifically being threatened by Neely when he intervened and that Neely had not become violent and had not been threatening anyone in particular.

Penny, a 24-year-old Marine veteran, was questioned by detectives and released, according to police. He reportedly told police he was not trying to kill Neely.

In a statement this week , attorneys for Penny offered "condolences to those close to Mr. Neely" and claimed, "Mr. Neely began aggressively threatening Daniel," and that the Marine veteran and others "acted to protect themselves."

"Mr. Neely had a documented history of violent and erratic behavior, the apparent result of ongoing and untreated mental illness," said the statement from the law firm of Raiser and Kenniff. "When Mr. Neely began aggressively threatening Daniel Penny and the other passengers, Daniel, with the help of others, acted to protect themselves, until help arrived. Daniel never intended to harm Mr. Neely and could not have foreseen his untimely death."

PHOTO: Jordan Neely is pictured before going to see the Michael Jackson movie, 'This is It' outside the Regal Cinemas on 8th Ave. and 42nd St. in Times Square, New York, in 2009.

The Neely family attorneys criticized the statement, calling it a "character assassination" of Neely, while calling for charges in the case.

"The truth is, he knew nothing about Jordan's history when he intentionally wrapped his arms around Jordan's neck, and squeezed and kept squeezing," said the Neely family attorneys.

"Daniel Penny's press release is not an apology nor an expression of regret. It is a character assassination, and a clear example of why he believed he was entitled to take Jordan's life," the statement from attorneys Donte Mills and Lennon Edwards continued.

MORE: Attorneys for Jordan Neely family, Daniel Penny speak out on NYC subway killing

Neely's family also called on the mayor to give them a call, saying, "The family wants you to know that Jordan matters."

Protesters have called for justice following the deadly incident. Over the weekend, protesters filled subway stations, some jumping on the tracks, while pressing for more action. Several protesters have been arrested in recent days during demonstrations.
