Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi how can he shun the responsibility from his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as BJP shared power with Shiv Sena for 25 years.

"In a bid to target Shiv Sena and make allegations of corruption, PM Modi targeted his own BJP which was in power with the Sena for 25 years. It seems Modiji forgot that whatever has happened in Mumbai, the BJP is equally responsible," said Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole.

Patole said that all the projects for which foundation stone was laid were started during Maha Vikas Aghadi government and not in last six months. "Modiji says that his government gives free ration to 80 crore Indians. How come despite BJP rule, India is witnessing so much of poverty?" Asked Patole.

The Congress leader reminded that PM Modi shared stage with State governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari who has made 'objectionable' comments against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. "Not a single BJP leader felt it was necessary to condemn him. It just shows the level of respect BJP has for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," he said.

The details of the Vasai court's January 13 order rejecting the bail plea of Khan was made available on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there is no pauncity of funds for the development of Mumbai, adding that the duo of CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis will help realise people's dreams in the city.

"Local governance is integral for bringing Mumbai transformation. Funds have to be utilized properly and that requires political will. Let us all together join hands for development of Mumbai," he said.

Stressing that Dharavi redevelopment is the state government's commitment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Mumbai will get a face lift in the coming days.

"Our emphasis will be on electric vehicles to curtail pollution. Through water treatment plants, rivers are being cleaned on massive scale," Modi said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that while the world is reeling under economic crisis, India is providing subsidies.

Modi said that Mumbai Metro was running on just an 11 km stretch in 2014, but the Shinde-Fadnavis team has put infrastructure on fast track.

"Double Engine government is committed to giving better amenities to poorest of the poor. Therefore, even railway stations are being developed on the lines of airport. CSMT, which is one the oldest railway stations, is being redeveloped. We are pushing for multi model connectivity," he said.

Hailing the projects launched from the MMRDA grounds in BKC, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that for the first time, the world is taking note of India's work. "There is a lot of positivity about India world over. With its futuristic and modern approach, India is moving forward. Today, we are providing modern infrastructure for better connectivity and economic prosperity," Modi said.

While thanking BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal for transforming the city, CM Eknath Shinde said, "G20 presidency is a matter of pride for us. We got this chance because in the past few years, Modi has taken the economy of India to new heights. In next 3 years, we will complete the makeover of Mumbai."

Speaking on the upcoming BMC polls, Shinde said, "Our endeavor will be to convert the double engine into triple engine. Under PM's leadership, we will make a new Maharashtra. No matter how much we are criticised, Mumbaikars are wise and appreciate the work we do."

Speaking about his Davos visit, CM Eknath Shinde said, 'I went to Davos and saw that every one from all over the world only asked about Modi. I am happy to tell you that Modi's charisma is resonating worldwide, not just India. This is a matter of pride for us.'

'We have to transform the face of Mumbai. We have to fast track development. All those projects which were stuck in pipelines will be expeditiously taken up,' he said.

Talking about the road concretisation project, Shinde said, "We will make Mumbai potholes free through concrete roads. The roads of Mumbai are being concretised and work for 400 km roads will be inaugurated by Modi today. There are still some people who want to hinder our work. Let them hinder it, and we will continue our work."

"The 350 km Metro mega project was conceptualized and implemented by Devendra Fadnavis as CM in 2014. PM Modi had done its bhoomipujan in 2015. Today, he is dedicating the two Metro lines to Mumbaikars," Shinde further said.

Addressing crowds at BKC's MMRDA grounds, CM Eknath Shinde said his double engine government will bring major transformation in Mumbai. he said that the BJP-Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena government is working under the guidance of PM Modi, and hailed his decisions in the last six months.

"Everything we are doing is bothering others. They think that within six months if this government can do so much work, what all it will achieve in the next six months. We will respond to criticism with work. We will do ten times more work in comparison to criticism," Shinde said.

Addressing crowds at MMRDA ground in BKC, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said that the double-engine government was chosen in 2019, but foul play led to a government ruling in the state for 2.5 years which the people did not want.

"But the true follower of Balasaheb Thackeray, Eknath Shinde showed courage and with your blessings, a government of the liking of the people came to Maharashtra once again. Maharashtra started walking rapidly on the path to development once again," Fadnavis said.

Real estate developers foresee good traction as two new Metro lines — 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar) & 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) — are set to begin operations this month.

Keval Valambhia, chief operating officer of CREDAI-MCHI Mumbai, a real estate apex body of members from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), expressed hope that these two Metro lines will play a crucial role in decongesting Mumbai’s current public transportation system and foster a new real estate boom in the western suburbs.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on the stage at the MMRDA grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex and was presented a traditional Marathi turban or 'pheta' by CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Ramdas Athavale and Bhagwat Karad are also on the stage. Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar and BJP (MP) Pooja Mahajan share dias with PM.

NCP (MP) Supriya Sule said her party welcomes Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mumbai but also feels sorry that he has to the running for the BJP. be it the BMC polls or the Lok Sabha polls.

"In the past, we have seen great leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. Unfortunately, BJP does not have leaders now. As a result, Modiji is burdened to do all running around in each and every poll," she said.

Marathi Singer Avdut Gupte sang the song 'Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha' at BKC's MMRDA grounds. The song has been proposed as the official state song by state cultural affairs minister Sudhir Mungantiwar.

Gupte has previously performed for BJP's Marathi Dandiya, and also sang at the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena's Dussehra rally. He also composed the theme song for the Shiv Sena, before the party split last year.

Satyajeet Tambe has been suspended from Congress for six years, after he threw in his hat as an Independent candidate in the Legislative Council’s Nashik graduate constituency.

Haji Arfat Shaikh, BJP leader and former president of the state minority commission, said, "The opposition is trying to paint a picture that BJP is creating a Hindu-Muslim divide. There are a large number of Muslims here who support Modi and the work he is doing for the country and our community.

Mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit to Mumbai, Shiv Sena (UBT) in its mouthpiece 'Saamana' said that his coming to the city was just another "campaign for his party'.

"Modi is visiting Mumbai for a few hours and it is being said that in these few hours, he will lay the foundation for the bright future of Mumbai. But the question is since when did the BJP start worrying about Mumbai's future and fortune? This propaganda that the Prime Minister is incarnating for the bright future of Mumbai is false. He is campaigning for his party, but can the saffron of the Shiv Sena be removed from Mumbai?" the editorial argued.

It further said that Mumbai would be blessed only if no attempt is made to "loot" the labour of Maharashtrians.

The Nationalist Congress Party demanded the resignation of Wresting Federation of India president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who has been accused of sexually exploiting women wrestlers for years, a charge vehemently rejected by the sports administrator.

Top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and many other grapplers are on a silent sit-in in New Delhi for the second day against WFI and its chief Singh. “Women wrestlers who have won laurels for our country are protesting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to seek justice for themselves for all the wrongdoings meted against them by the Wrestling Federation of India,” Clyde Crasto, NCP's national spokesperson, said in a statement. The massive cutouts of the Shiv Sena founder along the route Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take on his visit to Mumbai on Thursday have more than established that the BJP won't miss an opportunity to show its reverence to the late Bal Thackeray.

But there is another reason behind these posters which cannot be ignored. The Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has claimed it has upheld the political legacy of the late Bal Thackeray which was based on Hindutva and the welfare of the Marathi Manoos.

Right from the word go, Modi’s tour of Mumbai was a soft launch of the ruling alliance’s election campaign. The elections to the BMC and other municipal corporations and councils in Maharashtra are due later this year. This is being seen as the penultimate battle or the semi-final for the Lok Sabha elections and later, the state assembly elections due in 2024.

The BJP-BSS combine, which came to power after chief minister Eknath Shinde engineered a vertical split in the Shiv Sena legislature party, faces its litmus test in these local body polls.

With a budget of over Rs 46,000 crore, the BMC is the richest municipal corporation in India, and the BJP-BSS combine is preparing to wrest it from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray). The Shiv Sena has controlled the BMC from 1985-1992 and from 1997-2022 and used this to nurture a “reward economy“ to strengthen its organisational muscle in Mumbai. The BMC elections are a do-or-die battle for the Sena’s Uddhav faction. The ruling alliance hopes a setback in the BMC polls will send a section of the Uddhav faction cadre migrating to it for the perks of power.

* Targeting the Thackerays

Though Modi, Shinde, and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis did not name former chief minister and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) president Uddhav Thackeray or his son Aaditya Thackeray, they lashed out at them and the Sena for their stewardship of the BMC.

For instance, Fadnavis charged that the Rs 17,200 crore plan to build seven sewage treatment plants, with a combined capacity of around 2,460 MLD, had been delayed due to rent-seeking by those in control of the BMC. Shinde charged that “some people” were trying to create hurdles in the plan to concretise all city roads. Aaditya had earlier alleged that there were irregularities in the project and raised environmental concerns.

Modi too stressed that funds meant for Mumbai must be deployed at the right place.

* Wooing the aspirational voter

Modi’s development pitch was aimed at the young, aspirational and cosmopolitan voters. Calling upon people to elect the BJP-BSS to power in Mumbai, he stressed on the need for a “triple engine” sarkar, implying that having the BJP in power at the Centre, in the state and in the BMC would propel the city’s development. Modi promised that “Mumbai will be transformed” in the years to come.

More crucially, Modi alluded that politics had hampered the development of Mumbai. This may be a reference to the erstwhile Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government’s move to relocate the car shed for the 33.5 km Metro III (Colaba to SEEPZ) project from the Aarey Milk Colony, which is one of the city’s few green lungs. The BJP-BSS government has since rescinded the decision, which had caused a stalemate.

BJP and even Shiv Sena leaders say that the young, first-time and cosmopolitan voter can overcome the linguistic divide if presented with an agenda that taps into their aspirations.

* Bucking the linguistic divide

It was not a coincidence that Modi began his speech in Marathi and made mandatory references to icons like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Shinde too referred to the “warm ties” between Modi and late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, who continues to enjoy a talismanic appeal over the party faithful over a decade after his demise (2012). The ‘Aapla Davakhana’ project to strengthen Mumbai’s health infrastructure has also been named after Bal Thackeray.

Though no community, caste or linguistic group votes as a monolith, the Shiv Sena largely enjoys the support of the Marathi-speakers in Mumbai, while the BJP is seen as a party of non-Maharashtrians and mercantile groups. Of course, the BJP has strong pockets of support among upper-caste Maharashtrians like the Brahmins, while the Sena too has voters from non-Marathi catchments like the Gujaratis, Marwaris, Jains and South Indians.

In Mumbai, politics is largely based on linguistic identity. The Marathi speakers, especially those from the working class, live out the paradox of being not the majority, but the largest minority in the capital of their state. The Shiv Sena hopes that the ‘Marathi manoos’ will close ranks with it due to linguistic polarisation and the propaganda about Mumbai being severed from Maharashtra and being converted to a Union territory.

On the other hand, the BJP hopes that the alliance with the BSS will lead to some Marathi-speakers transferring their loyalties to them. The BSS claims it represents the “real” Shiv Sena and has taken over the ideological mantle of Bal Thackeray.

Shinde said that the “common thread” running through Bal Thackeray and Modi’s credos was “pride for Hindutva”. The BJP and BSS allege that the Shiv Sena, which turned towards radical Hindutva in the late 1980s, has diluted its commitment to the cause under Uddhav Thackeray by allying with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

The Sena, in turn, also hopes to get some incremental votes of Muslims and Roman Catholic Christians to defeat the BJP. This harping on the issue of a compromise with Hindutva will make it tough for the Uddhav-led Sena to openly solicit votes from these sections, admit his party leaders.

The notification issued by Nisar Tamboli, Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, said, in order to streamline traffic and to avoid inconvenience to people in general, traffic on BKC Road (and side roads of BKC road) from MMRDA junction to MTNL junction will be regulated and controlled. During regulation of traffic on BKC road from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm on January 19 optional routes will be available to the commuters, the police said in the notification.

With an eye at BMC elections:     Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set its eyes on the cash-rich Mumbai civic body to dislodge the rival Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction from power in the civic elections, the schedule for which is yet to be announced.

The 18.6 km-long Mumbai Metro Rail line 2A connects suburban Dahisar (East) with the 16.5 km-long DN Nagar (yellow line) while the metro line 7 joints Andheri (East) with Dahisar (East). Interestingly, the foundation stones of these lines were laid by PM Modi in 2015.

Other projects PM Modi will inaugurate during his visit to Mumbai:

MUMBAI 1 Mobile App and National Common Mobility Card (Mumbai 1):

PM Modi will also launch MUMBAI 1 Mobile App and National Common Mobility Card (Mumbai 1).

The app will facilitate ease of travel which can be shown at the entry gates of Metro stations. It supports digital payment to buy tickets through UPI.

The Card will initially be used in metro corridors and can be extended to other modes of mass public transit including local trains and buses as well, the release said.

Commuters will not need to carry multiple cards or cash, it said, adding the NCMC card will enable quick, contact-less digital transactions, easing the process with a seamless experience.

Sewage treatment plants:

The seven sewage treatment plants for which PM Modi will lay the foundation stone will be built at a cost of around Rs 17,200 crore. These plants will be set up in suburban Malad, Bhandup, Versova, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Dharavi and Worli. They will have a combined capacity of around 2,460 MLD.

Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana clinics:

The Prime Minister will inaugurate 20 "Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana" clinics. The "Aapla Dawakhana" initiative provides essential medical services like health check-ups, medicines, investigations and diagnostics free, to the people.

Multi-speciality municipal hospitals:

PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of three hospitals- a 360-bed Bhandup multi-speciality municipal hospital, a 306-bed hospital in Goregaon (West), and a 152-bed maternity home in Oshiwara.

Road concretisation project:

According to Prime Minister's Office (PMO), PM Modi will also launch a road concretisation project worth Rs 6,100 crore for around 400 km of roads in the megapolis. Of the total roads extending to around 2,050 Km in Mumbai, more than 1,200 Km of roads are either concretized or are in the process of being concretized. However, the remaining roads of about 850 km in length face challenges of potholes which severely impact transportation. The road concretisation project is aimed to overcome this challenge. These concrete roads will ensure fast travel along with enhanced security, while also providing better drainage facilities and utility ducts will ensure regular digging of roads is avoided, the release said.

Redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus:

Another important project is the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai for which the foundation stone will be laid. This project is aimed at decongesting the southern heritage node of the terminus, augmentation of facilities, better multi-modal integration and conserving and restoring the world-famous iconic structure to its past glory, the release said. The redevelopment will cost more than Rs 1,800 crore.

Mumbai News Updates:  Lauding development in Mumbai, PM Modi said that the ‘jodi’ of CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis would make the dreams of Mumbai’s citizens come true. The PM was addressing a public rally at the MMRDA grounds in Mumbai’s BKC. Earlier, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated two lines of the Mumbai Metro – 2A and 7 – and inaugurated several development projects. Meanwhile, entry of heavy vehicles has been banned on the Western Express Highway until 9:00 pm, the Mumbai Traffic Police said.

Large size cut outs of PM Modi, Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputy Devendra Fadnavis have been put up at Mumbai’s at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The cutouts have also been put up outside former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s residence in Bandra. The worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction are expected to gather at the venue around 1 pm, in a massive show of strength for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally. Commuters travelling to and from the suburbs must track traffic police’s advisory as snarls are expected on the Western Express Highway and Bandra East. The highway will remain impacted till 7 pm amid elaborate security arrangements for the prime minister’s one-day visit.

PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of projects worth around Rs 38,800 crore and flag off two metro lines. While Mumbai Metro Rail Lines 2A will run between Andheri and west Dahisar, line 7 will run between Andheri east and Dahisar. The police have also banned flying activities under the limits of police stations at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and nearby areas in Mumbai.

PM Modi is scheduled to attend a function at Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) grounds in the Bandra Kurla Complex, an upscale commercial hub, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones of the projects. He is also expected to make a few announcements ahead of the civic polls. Elections to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest civic body, are due since last year. The prime minister is likely to address a public rally during his visit to the financial capital.

Some local reports stated that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers are expected to gather at the BKC ground by 1 pm on Thursday, as the Western Express Highway will be kept closed for security reasons. This is PM Modi’s first visit to the city after the Eknath Shinde-led government came to power with the help of the BJP. The two parties are expected to put up a show of strength in Mumbai.

Arrangements for PM Modi’s Visit

The use of drones and other flying objects around Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), Andheri and Jogeshwari have been banned for 24 hours.

The order issued by DCP (Operations), Mumbai Police, Vishal Thakur stated, “Due to the situation prevailing in the areas under the control of the Commissioner of Police, Brihanmumbai, it is apprehended that during the Prime Minister of India’s Mumbai visit on January 19 at BKC MMRDA Ground, Metro Line no. 7, Gundavali Station to Mograpada Metro Station that anti-social elements may attack using drones, paragliders, remote control microlight aircraft and there is every likelihood breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquility and also there is grave danger to the human life, health, safety and injury to public property.”

“No drone, para-gliders, remote control microlight aircraft flying activities to be allowed in the jurisdiction of BKC police station, Andheri police station, Meghwadi police Station and Jogeshwari police Station,” the order further stated.

Why Are the Two Metro Lines Important?

Metro Line 2A, from Dahisar to DN Nagar, is an 18.6 km long elevated corridor with 17 stations and connects the Western, Central Mumbai and the Northern suburban Mumbai, reducing the current travel time by anything between 50 per cent and 75 per cent depending on road conditions, as per MMRDA.

Metro Line 7, running between Andheri (E) and Dahisar (E), is a 16.5-km elevated corridor with 13 stations. The project cost Rs 6,208 crore. The 10.7-km first phase, between Dahisar and Aarey with nine stations, started in April 2022. The remaining four stations in 5.8 km will start operations from Friday.

Other Projects

Besides the flagging off of metro lines, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also lay foundation stones for setting up two hospitals, and a new sewerage treatment plant in Mumbai to prevent the mixing of sewage water into the sea.

Traffic Likely to be Affected in THESE Mumbai Areas:

The Ghatkopar-Versova Metro Blue Line 1 will shut services for 1 hour 45 minutes in the middle of the evening peak hour to facilitate the visit of Prime Minister to Gundavli station of Red Line 7 along the Western Express Highway for the opening of two new corridors of Mumbai Metro.

Mumbai Traffic Police said there would be slow movement of traffic on South bound carriageway from 4.15 pm to 5.30 pm and North bound carriageway of the Western Express Highway from 5.30 pm to 6.45 pm. Roads leading to and from Bandra Kurla Complex and Gundavali Metro station are likely to remain affected today.

Mumbai Traffic Police yesterday tweeted, “Due to planned public function in BKC & Gundavali Metro station tomorrow, expect slow movement of traffic on South bound carriageway from 4.15 pm to 5.30 pm and North bound carriageway of WEH from 5.30 pm to 6.45 pm. Citizens are advised to plan commute accordingly.”

Maharashtra CM, His Deputy Cancel Davos Visit

Chief minister Eknath Shinde had to cut short his trip to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland’s Davos, while deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis cancelled his trip for PM Modi’s visit. Shinde’s visit to Davos is likely to bring investment opportunities for Maharashtra. The two leaders will be present for all the events of the prime minister in Mumbai.

Throwing light on Maharashtra`s magnificent forts of Shivaji Maharaj, the Konkan coastline and the Sahyadri Mountain Range, PM Modi expressed his desire for Maharashtra to scale the top spot in tourism. He also spoke about the state’s potential in medical tourism and conference tourism.

“ Maharashtra is going to write a new chapter of development in India , and we are its co-travellers”, PM Modi said, underlining that Saturday`s event is a commitment of the government to such resolutions.

Elaborating on the high aspirations of the Indian citizens in the 21st century, PM Modi reiterated the national resolution of Viksit Bharat in the next 25 years. He emphasized the role of Mumbai and Maharashtra in this journey.

“It is our goal that quality of life goes up for everyone in Mumbai and Maharashtra. We are trying to improve the connectivity in the nearby areas of Mumbai”, he said.

PM Modi mentioned the completion of the coastal road and Atal Setu. He informed that about 20 thousand vehicles are using Atal Setu daily, saving an estimated 20-25 lakh rupees worth of fuel. The Metro system, he said, is developing rapidly in Mumbai as the length of the Metro line increased from 8 KM a decade ago to 80 KM today and work is going on the 200 KM Metro network.

“Transformation of Indian Railways benefitting Mumbai and Maharashtra in a big way”, PM Modi said as he mentioned the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Nagpur station.

“Today new platforms were dedicated to the nation on  Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Station enabling 24 coaches long trains to ply from there”, he added.

Prime Minister also informed that the length of National highways in Maharashtra has tripled in the last 10 years. Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) Project, he said, is a great example of nature and progress. The Thane Borivali Twin Tunnel Project will reduce the distance between Thane and Boriveli to a few minutes. The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s endeavor to develop the pilgrimage sites of the nation while also easing travel and extending services to the pilgrims. He noted that lakhs of pilgrims are taking part in Pandharpur Wari and mentioned the construction of  Sant Dnyaneshwar Palkhi Marg to approximately 200 km, and Sant Tukaram Palkhi Marg to approximately 110 km to ease travel for the pilgrims. He assured that these two roads would soon become operational.

PM Modi said that this connectivity infrastructure is helping tourism, agriculture and industry, improving employment and resting ease for women.

“These works of the NDA government are empowering the poor, farmers, women power and youth power” he said, lauding the double engine government for its initiatives like skilling 10 lakh youth and scholarships under Mukhyamantri Yuva Karya Prashikhan Yojana.

“Skill development and employment in large numbers is India’s need of the hour”, the Prime Minister remarked, highlighting the record employment generation in India in the past 4-5 years despite the looming Covid pandemic. PM Modi threw light on a recently released detailed report on employment by the Reserve Bank of India and informed that approximately 8 crore jobs have been created in the last 3-4 years, thereby silencing the critics. The Prime Minister also asked the citizens to remain cautious of the false narratives being spun against India’s development. He said that employment is created when bridges are built,  railway tracks are laid, roads are constructed, and local trains are manufactured. He noted that the rate of employment in the country is directly proportional to infrastructure development.

“The development model of the NDA government has been to give priority to the deprived”, the Prime Minister emphasized, mentioning the first decision of the new government to build 3 crore houses for the poor. 4 crore families have already received houses. Lakhs of dalits and deprived in Maharashtra also benefited from the Awas Yojana. “We are committed to fulfilling the dream of owning a house for both the poor and the middle class living in cities”, he added.

He talked about the role SVANidhi Scheme is performing in restoring dignity in the life of the street vendors. He informed that about 90 lakh loans have been approved under the scheme including 13 lakhs in Maharashtra and 1.5 lakh in Mumbai itself. He quoted a study that says that the scheme has resulted in a monthly increase of 2 thousand rupees in the income of these vendors.

PM Modi highlighted a speciality of the SVANidhi scheme and mentioned the self-respect and power of the poor, especially the street vendors of the country who have availed bank loans under the scheme and also repaid it in time. He informed that the beneficiaries of SVANidhi scheme have so far made digital transactions worth Rs 3.25 lakh crores.

“Maharashtra has propagated cultural, social and national consciousness in India”, the Prime Minister said as he mentioned the legacies left behind by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Savitribai Phule, Annabhau Sathe, Lokmanya Tilak and Veer Savarkar. The Prime Minister exhorted the citizens to move forward and fulfill their vision of a harmonious society and strong nation. Concluding the address, the Prime Minister urged the citizens to keep in mind that the path to prosperity lies in harmony and amity.

Governor of Maharashtra, Ramesh Bais, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde , deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal and Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale were present on the occasion among others.

modi tours travels mumbai

Indian PM Modi steals limelight at lavish Ambani wedding as route to the ceremony lined with posters

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi seemed to divert some attention from the lavish Ambani wedding in Mumbai.
  • Posters bearing the PM's face lined the route to the ceremony for Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant's wedding.
  • Anant Ambani is the son of Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man.

Insider Today

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has seemingly stolen some of the attention away from the lavish Ambani wedding in Mumbai this weekend.

While guests on the star-studded wedding invitation list — which includes names such as Kim Kardashian, Mike Tyson, and John Cena — make their way to the ceremony, they will be greeted by posters bearing the face of the prime minister, who is in the area to kick off a project.

"Heartfelt welcome to India's beloved and respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai," the posters lining the way to the event read, per Reuters.

Keshav Upadhye, the chief spokesperson for Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the state of Maharashtra, said the posters had been put up by some "excited party workers," not the party itself, per Reuters.

After months of headline-making pre-wedding celebrations, Anant Ambani — the son of Asia's richest man Mukesh Ambani — and Radhika Merchant were married early Saturday at the Jio World Convention Centre.

While it's not certain whether Modi will attend the wedding celebrations, it is thought he may briefly make an appearance.

Activities are scheduled for July 13, and the reception is set to take place on July 14.

Modi's potential presence at the event, which has drawn criticism from locals , could cause backlash from the opposition and the public, as the 73-year-old leader has previously been accused of being too close to business tycoons like the Ambanis.

Modi, who was recently reelected for a third term in office , has denied such allegations.

Mukesh Ambani is the 11th richest person in the world , with a net worth of $121 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .

He's the chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries, a conglomerate with interests in a variety of sectors, including petrochemicals, telecom, and energy.

The Ambanis made headlines in 2018 for throwing another huge celebration for the wedding of Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal. It included a private Beyoncé concert and high-profile guests such as Nick Jonas and Hillary Clinton.

Earlier this year, the family also hosted an extravagant three-day pre-wedding celebration for Anant's wedding. Tech heavyweights such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg were just two of the 1,200 guests invited.

Modi’s Moscow Visit Showcases a Less Isolated Putin, Angering Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India made his first visit to Russia in five years, even as Ukraine reeled from an attack on a children’s hospital.

They hugged and strolled under the trees. They sipped tea and exchanged thoughts for hours. They petted horses together at the stables.

The jovial scenes between President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, captured during the Indian leader’s first visit to Russia in five years, illustrated a sobering reality.

Despite the West’s campaign to isolate Russia over its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, other nations have pursued their own interests with regard to Moscow, helping Mr. Putin shore up the Russian economy and continue to wage his war. India, which has close ties to the United States, has emerged as the second-biggest importer of Russian oil after China in the years since the invasion.

Mr. Modi’s state visit, which began late Monday with a trip to Mr. Putin’s residence outside Moscow, underscored the point. At the Kremlin on Tuesday, Mr. Putin awarded Mr. Modi the Order of St. Andrew, the Russian government’s highest civilian honor, expressing “sincere gratitude” for his contribution to relations between their states.

“We have had two and a half years now of endless Russian atrocities, and most of the world is not daunted or uncomfortable maintaining some kind of business as usual with Moscow,” said Andrew S. Weiss, the vice president for studies at the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “That’s a really sad commentary on Russia’s continued geopolitical weight.”

While Mr. Modi was hugging the Russian leader late Monday, rescue workers and volunteers in Kyiv were clearing away rubble from a Russian strike on Ukraine’s biggest pediatric hospital . Images of children outside the destroyed medical facility with their IVs still attached, or in some cases covered in blood, wrenched a nation that has been exhausted by more than two years of Russian bombardment.

“It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day,” Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, wrote on X .

The leaders of India and Russa standing in an ornate hall.

The state visit was also juxtaposed against the gathering of NATO countries on Tuesday in Washington, where they discussed continued support for Ukraine.

Western governments have failed to persuade India and many other governments around the world to take a public position against Mr. Putin’s war. Mr. Modi has avoided condemning Russia’s invasion and instead issued general calls for peace, maintaining the warm relations with Moscow that India has cultivated since the days of the Cold War.

The Indian leader said he had discussed Ukraine with Mr. Putin at his residence, agreeing on the need for peace as soon as possible.

“Any person who believes in humanity feels pain when people die, and especially when innocent children die,” Mr. Modi said Tuesday, a possible implicit reference to the hospital attack. “When we feel such pain, the heart simply explodes, and I had the opportunity to talk about these issues with you yesterday.”

The state visit offered still more evidence that Mr. Putin has managed to avoid the pariah status Western leaders tried to force on him after the invasion. Mr. Putin has maintained a robust diplomatic schedule holding two meetings with China’s leader , Xi Jinping, in two months, along with meeting the leaders of Vietnam , Hungary , Belarus and the nations of Central Asia,

On Tuesday, Indian officials said that the two countries had struck various agreements to strengthen economic ties, with the goal of reaching $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.

Russia and India also said they would strengthen their military cooperation, including manufacturing more weapon spare parts and units in India. They pledged to continue developing national payment systems, which allow Russia to conduct trade outside U.S. dollars and away from platforms impacted by Western sanctions.

Mr. Modi, who said he had met Mr. Putin 17 times over the course of the past decade, invited Mr. Putin to visit India next year.

“Russia is India’s true friend,” Mr. Modi said at a meeting with members of the Indian community in Moscow, according to the Russian state news agency Tass.

While India imported little Russian crude before the invasion of Ukraine, the nation has since risen to become the No. 2 importer of Russian oil after China, helping fill the Kremlin’s coffers despite a Western ban on most Russian oil imports. In many cases, India has been refining Russian crude and re-exporting it to European nations that are subject to the ban, giving it a lucrative middleman role .

Matthew Miller, the State Department spokesman, told reporters on Tuesday that the U.S. has “been quite clear about our concerns” about India’s relationship with Russia, and has related them “privately, directly to the Indian government” — including within the past 24 hours. “We continue to urge India to support efforts to realize an enduring and just peace in Ukraine,” he said.

Mr. Modi said Tuesday that as a friend, he had always told Mr. Putin that peace was a prerequisite for future generations to have a bright future.

“That is why we believe that war is not a solution,” he said. “There can be no solution through war. Bombs, missiles and rifles cannot ensure peace. That is why we emphasize dialogue.”

India has a long history of friendly relations with Moscow. The Soviet Union and later Russia for decades supplied much of India’s arms and military equipment, though that reliance has decreased in recent years, in part because of pressure from the United States.

“This has been a time-tested relationship, and there is a consensus in India, regardless of political orientation, that the relationship with Russia is one to be preserved and not squandered,” said Rajan Menon, professor emeritus of political science at City College.

Mr. Putin has cast his invasion of Ukraine as an anti-imperial struggle against an encroaching West, and that message has resonated in parts of the developing world that once lived under Western colonialism. According to a Pew Research Center poll conducted this year, just 16 percent of respondents in India expressed unfavorable views of Russia, compared with 46 percent who voiced positive associations.

During his talks with Mr. Putin, Mr. Modi sought the early discharge of all I ndian nationals who were recruited by the Russian army under “false pretenses,” according to government officials. The contentious issue had introduced a sour note in the countries’ friendly relations. Mr. Putin agreed to the discharge of those citizens, who India has said number between 35 and 50.

Mr. Menon predicted that India would continue to cultivate deeper ties with the United States over the long term, but not at a cost of having to choose sides.

“Anyone who expects you can peel India off and put it in the U.S. column — that is not going to happen,” he said. “Would you rather be completely dependent on the United States or Russia, or have a position of maneuverability between the two?”

Michael Crowley contributed reporting.

Inside Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s Final Wedding Celebration in Mumbai

This weekend, Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding took place in Mumbai—and it’s no exaggeration to say the whole world was watching.

Thousands gathered in the streets of Mumbai to watch the son of India’s wealthiest man travel from the family home of Antilla to the Jio World Convention Center for his baraat. Millions more scrolled through on social media as Kim and Khloe Kardashian posted themselves in traditional Indian clothing with a camera crew in tow. (It’s rumored the family is shooting an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. ) Meanwhile, news outlets from the New York Times to the BBC sent reporters to cover the affair, and tabloids churned out articles upon articles on the family’s every move.

The fervor was understandable. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, and Nita Ambani, his wife, hosted a hastakshar for their son and his fiancée in March where Rihanna performed. In the late spring, they held grand parties for their son and his fiancée in both London and on a cruise ship that sailed the Mediterranean. One had to wonder: If the pre-wedding events were this grand, what would the actual wedding be like?

Vogue was granted the world exclusive inside the event. Radhika says that their wedding weekend was chosen with the utmost intent. “The dates were strategically chosen from the 12th, 13th, and 14th of July upon the advice of our family pujari, who identified synchronic moments for our celebrations based on auspicious astrological alignments in both my charts as well as Anant’s,” she says. “It was a meticulous process.”

Also a meticulous process? The planning: overseen by Nita Ambani alongside her daughter Isha Ambani and daughter-in-law Shloka Ambani. “My mother-in-law was the C.E.O. of the wedding, as I like to say,” says Radhika. “It was Nita’s commitment and vision that brought our entire celebration to life.” The family had several teams of event planners, as well as their in-house staff, working around the clock to orchestrate the multi-week affair.

Their nuptials kicked off on July 5 with a sangeet—or, a pre-wedding event where both the bride, groom, and their families do choreographed dances on stages to symbolize their upcoming union. Radhika wore in a crystal outfit by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. (“I wanted to make a lasting impression,” she says.) Anant also opted for a look by Khosla, complete with ruby diamond buttons by Kantilal Chhotalal.

Pinned on his chest was a cheetah brooch, a nod to his 3,000-acre animal rescue sanctuary Vantara in Gujarat. Isha, meanwhile, wore a custom Schiaparelli saree: a first for the French haute couture house.

As the party grew late—and Justin Bieber took the stage for a private concert—Radhika changed into a metal mesh saree by Manish Malhotra. “It featured a corset that added a modern twist,” Radhika explains. “Although it was quite heavy, it was worth every moment.”

Over the next few days, the couple had several poojas (or, ceremonial prayers) as well as a mehendi ceremony where the bride and her guests get their hands and feet painted with henna. Then on July 11, they held their haldi—an auspicious tradition when a soon-to-be-married couple is covered in turmeric paste for prosperity. Radhika wore sherara pants from Anamika Khanna and a dupatta (or, a stole) made of flowers. “The atmosphere was filled with joy—and a bit of chaos,” says Radhika. “Our haldi is what I hold most dear to me.”

July 12 was the baraat, or, the groom’s wedding procession. Arriving at the Jio World Convention, there were musical performers and hundreds of dancers as Anant arrived on horseback. “It was out of this world. I’ve never seen anything like this,” designer Prabal Gurung, who was one of over 2,000 guests in attendance along with Tony Blair, Nick Jonas, and Priyanka Chopra, says of the baraat. “The whole room was filled with flowers and Bollywood celebrities. There was all this dancing and singing.” (Those flowers were orchestrated by event planner Preston Bailey, who made over 60 floral animal sculptures, made of Indian flowers, including monkeys, elephants, and tigers. He estimated each one took over 100,000 flowers to make. “It took many sleepless nights,” Bailey tells Vogue , who arrived in Mumbai three weeks ago in order to pull it off. Throughout the evening, people lined up to take photos in front of the installations.)

After a short break, it was time for the wedding. The Hindu ceremony began with the traditional jaimala, where Anant and Radhika exchanged garlands symbolizing acceptance of one another. That was followed by the kanyadaan, or, the official moment where Radhika’s parents gave Anant their blessing to marry their daughter. Then came the phera: or, the actual wedding ceremony where the bride and groom take circumambulations around a ritual fire. Radhika describes the act as “somber yet mesmerizing.”

“Each vow encompasses promises of love, fidelity, prosperity, and mutual respect, creating a foundation for our married life,” she says. Afterward came the sindoor daan and mangalsutra ceremonies, where Anant put vermillion in Radhika’s hair and tied a mangalsutra, or sacred necklace, around her neck. “This can be likened to the exchange of rings in a Western wedding,” Radhika explains. “The ceremony concluded with the aashirwad, where we sought blessings from our elders, ensuring their good wishes for our future.”

For this holy moment, Radhika wore a one-of-a-kind couture look by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla in red and white, honoring the Gujarati tradition of panetar. Her ghagra was adorned with intricate floral motifs along with precious stones and sequins. Upon her head was a six-foot veil that had a delicate jaali pattern and cut-work. (“My veil was a true Zardozi marvel,” says Radhika, referencing the cultural term for gold thread embroidery.)

Around her neck, she wore a multi-emerald ranihaar, or bridal necklace. Radhika tells Vogue the piece is a family heirloom: “I wore the same necklace my sister and aunts wore at their weddings, and I truly believe it gave me a special strength and blessing,” she says. The groom, meanwhile, wore Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla.

Then, it was time for the bidaai—or, farewell ceremony for the bride as she leaves her family home to move into her marital home in Indian weddings. “It's considered a bittersweet and sentimental moment that marks the start of the bride's new life as a wife and the end of her role as a daughter,” Radhika explains. She changed into a custom red-and-gold lehenga by Manish Malhotra which featured a blouse from the Indian house’s archive that was over 100 years old. The bride also tells Vogue that her trousseau was a lifetime in the making: “There are looks—dresses and jewelry, which I have planned on with my mom and sister since I was a little girl; I haven’t paid much attention to trends,” she says.

On Saturday, the Ambanis held a pooja to the goddess Saraswati. “For this day I wore my favorite outfit of the whole wedding—a ghagra painted by one of my favorite artists, Jayshree Burman in collaboration with Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla,” says Radhika. “Burman intricately painted an entire world within my ghagra with Lakshmi and Vishnu at the center,” The religious ceremony also attracted plenty of international press attention: India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, attended.

Sunday was the Mangal Utsav: the couple’s wedding reception which was attended by over 14,000 people. Radhika wore a gold filigree corset from Dolce & Gabbana and a constructed saree from Anamika Khanna for the final event of her wedding weekend.

Now that it’s all over, however, Radhika says she has an “overwhelming sense of fulfillment.”

“We’ve been friends and confidants to one another for so long, and now we are finally embarking upon our official journey as a married couple,” she says of her marriage to Anant. “I can’t wait to see what our shared life has in store.”
