Welcome to the Oak Island Lighthouse Official Tour Headquarters!

The lighthouse grounds are open year round for viewing and picture taking with free parking provided at either of our two parking lots (small one at the base of the lighthouse and a larger lot 500 feet on the right) from sunrise until sunset.  in addition, the oak island lighthouse volunteer staff offers 2 types of inside tours:.

NO reservations are required. Visitors MUST be at least 7 years old to climb to the second level due to government lead based paint restrictions.
  • Tours to the top (up 131 steps to an outside balcony) are offered year round in the mornings with up to 6 weeks advance notice during the summer months and around holidays . Top tours from May 1st through September 30th are offered every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday with the first tour starting at 9:30 a.m. Top tours from October 1st through April 30th are only offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. depending on available space.  ALL of our tours are in the MORNINGS. No top tours are offered on the major holidays (New Year’s, Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.). All top tours depend on guide availability. We are an all-volunteer organization and require prior reservations in order to schedule guides for your tour. We will try and honor last minute requests into any tours that have already been scheduled and are below our maximum. All climbers MUST be at least 9 years of age and everyone MUST wear sneakers to climb. As many as ~20 people may be scheduled at the same time for your tour. More details follow.

All tours are currently free and minimal parking is right at the base of the lighthouse, with additional parking available in our larger lot 500 feet further down the road to the east (on the right and across from the entrance to the Coast Guard Station). No restroom facilities are available on site.

Tours to the Top – Climb to the Top (year-round by appointment only):

  • Tours to the top of the tower (up 131 ships steps) to an outside balcony must be scheduled ahead of time with the following conditions:

Sneakers or similar closed toe, rubber sole shoes are REQUIRED – NO sandals, Crocks or flip-flops. Climbers are required to have both hands free for climbing due to the steepness of our steps. Cameras/video recorders are encouraged but must be in a back/fanny-pack or fit in a pocket/on a belt (both hands must be free to climb). Still interested, request a free tour to the top ( HERE ). Please Note: For all tour requests, please include your telephone number so a member of our team can reach you in the case we have problems with your email. Oak Island By Boat: Salty Dog Sea Tours Review

Share The Love!

For the last couple years, I’ve been a bit obsessed with the TV show The Curse Of Oak Island. Since Oak Island is not far from where I grew up, I was fascinated by the search for treasure, and the mystery of who put it there and why. We’ve done the walking tour that takes place on the island, but this time we decided to take a tour by boat. We booked Salty Dog Sea Tours that operates out of Oak Island Marina.

Salty Dog Sea Tours Review , See Oak Island By Boat | #oakisland #novascotia #canada

Salty Dog Sea Tours Information

Tours are operated 7 days a week and are offered 3-4 times a day; 10am, 1pm, 5pm and sometimes 7pm. The tours last approximately 90 minutes

You can book your tours online easily on their website

Adults – $60 + tax

Children ages 2-5 – 30 + tax

Children under 2 – Free

The tour leaves from Oak Island marina, located at the Oak Island resort , which is on the mainland, not the island itself. There is lots of parking at the resort, and if you’re looking for a place to have a bite to eat before or after the tour, there is a restaurant as well.

Lunenburg and Mahone Bay are towns close by. Here are my favourite things to do there!

Oak Island Resort, Gold River Nova Scotia

Salty Dog Sea Tours Review

If you’ve watched The Curse of Oak Island, then you might remember diver Tony Sampson. He’s been on the show each season, and he is the owner of Salty Dog Sea Tours. Tony is skipper/narrator on many of the tours, but the night we took the tour, we had Ken as our guide. Ken works with Tony as a diver and has been on the show as well.

Salty Dog Sea Tours Boat

The tour started with leaving Oak Island Marina and stopping by the Oak Island causeway, which connects the Island to mainland Nova Scotia. We learned the history of the causeway, and then we continued motoring our way around the Island. It was neat to see the island from another perspective. In some ways it is bigger than you would think, but also very small.

The most exciting thing that you can see from the water is Smith’s Cove. If you’ve been following the show over the last season, then you’ll know there is a lot of treasure and information hunting going on there. You can see that they’ve extended the cofferdam around the cove, and they’re definitely doing a lot of work in the area. We will have to wait for the season to air to see what they find!

Smith's Cove 2019 on Oak Island

The next part of the island you see is the money pit area and the swamp. Again it is interesting to see from the water. You can’t see much of the money pit, but we were able to see that there was a new big pile of dirt. I guess they dug down somewhere! The local rumor was that they found something… but we’ll have to wait and see!

Oak Island Money Pit Area 2019

We boated back to the marina to say goodbye to Ken. He answered any questions he could (since he does have a non-disclosure agreement) and we parted ways.

Boat Tour vs Oak Island Walking Tour

As we have done the Oak Island walking tour put on by the Friends of Oak Island Society, you might be wondering what tour is better. The walking tours have extremely limited tickets and sell out very quickly (within 20 minutes of going on sale!) which means they are hard to get. If you have never been to Oak Island, you definitely get to see more on the walking tour. Being able to look down 10X and see the money pit up close, really brings the TV show to life. Since we had done the walking tour, we really enjoyed seeing the island from a different point of view.

No matter which tour you do, (or neither) you can still visit the Oak Island Interpretation Centre, which is located on the island, just across the causeway. The Interpretation centre serves as a museum of things that have been found on the island, as well as a timeline of the history of the treasure hunt. It is open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm, however it is closed on days that tours operate on the island (certain Saturdays and Sundays in the summer). Check their Facebook page for all the info.

Final Thoughts

All in all we had a great time with Salty Dog Sea Tours and I would go on one again. Maybe by next year they’ll have treasure to tell us about!

If you’ve been to Oak Island tell us what you thought in the comments!

So if you take the boat tour is still possible to meet members of the crew and Rick Lagina himself? I am a fan of the show and I would love to meet him.

' src=

Hi Caroline! Not usually since you don’t actually touch down on the Island during this tour. Usually Tony Sampson the diver is your captain so you should get to meet him! The walking tour is your best bet to meet Rick Lagina!

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY ABOUT US ★★★★★

A ride aboard the Southport Water Tours boat is a must-see for visitors to Southport. What better way to see the town--ANY town--than from the water that provides so much revenue and livelihood for a community!

On vacation in Holden Beach and wanted to check out Southport one evening. Saw they had a 50 minute tour and it was a great time for all. We had a nice breeze. The boat had a cover to keep the sun off us. The captain would give us info on all the islands and stuff that we would pass. Best $20 you can spend.

We took out of town visitors on the cruise looking for a cool way to get some relief from the heat. It was wonderful! We learned a lot about the history and wildlife, we even got to see some dolphins. Really a fun way to learn about the area. Highly recommend.

We did this tour to pass some time before walking over to Provision for an early dinner. It was fun and informative, and there were even passing dolphins in the vicinity that were visible from the boat. We enjoyed it.

We enjoyed a great tour with Captain Ted! Eli and the team were very responsive when booking the tour. Highly recommend the private sunset tour. We saw several dolphins and enjoyed learning about the ecology and local hot spots!

Eli and Tina made this a great tour. Eli giving a great commentary on Pilots for the huge cargo ships going up and down the Cape Fear River to Wilmington. The boat has padded seats, (no backs), and overhead cover keeping the sun off you if you wish. Neat little tour

Tour Team Ty’s ‘Battle on the Beach’ Season 4 Home

Married Dallas renovators Chyenne and Kristin joined mentor Ty Pennington in North Carolina for the ultimate coastal showdown. “I shall be your humble shepherd to glory,” he promised. Step inside their renovated beach house.

Ty Pennington takes a selfie with his team of Chyenne Nycole and Kristin Smith, as seen on Battle on the Beach, Season 4.

Battle on the Beach: Team Ty

Rock the Block host Ty Pennington headed to Oak Island, North Carolina, intent on extending his Battle on the Beach winning streak . The Texas twosome who would renovate their way through the competition with him? Married Dallas flippers Chyenne Overturf-Smith and Kristin Smith, a duo with a decade of experience and their priorities in order. “I think it’s important that females are involved in renovating homes; it’s a great source of income and everybody has to live in a house,” Kristin said. “We didn’t leave our dogs to not win."

Judges, mentors and teams arrive on the beach for the winner announcement of the Kitchen Challenge, as seen on Battle on the Beach, Season 4.

The Teams: Season 4

Everything felt a bit bigger for the fourth installment of Battle on the Beach . When Ty took top honors in Season 3 and became “current reigning supreme champion” (Ty's words), each of the competition’s mentors officially had one overall win to their name. That makes this year’s competition a champion-on-champion-on-champion battle royale.

Season 1 winner and Build It Forward host Taniya Nayak mentored Sam and Sean Kilgore , a married Michigan couple. Season 2 winner and Windy City Rehab host Alison Victoria mentored Norfolk, Virginia, business partners Teresa Robinson and Brandon Parker. The overall renovation budget for each team was bumped up to an unprecedented $100,000, and the trios transformed four-bedroom, two-bathroom homes on a bucolic barrier island 35 miles south of Wilmington, North Carolina. Each property had both the potential to be a showstopper and questionable characteristics that would stop buyers-to-be in their tracks. The $50,000 grand prize wasn’t going to be easy money.

Before photo of team Ty Pennington’s kitchen, as seen on Battle on the Beach, Season 4.

The Kitchen Challenge, Before

Team Ty displayed dazzling early rapport in a “sight unseen” challenge and won the right to have first pick of the competition’s three homes — based on two minutes spent reviewing exterior photos and floor plans. The Texans made the Ty-baffling choice to go with the smallest of the options, a 1,250-square-foot ranch appraised at $721,700, reasoning that their $100,000 renovation budget would have more impact in a smaller space. When they got inside at last, they discovered the home was a 1980s time capsule and just about everything in the kitchen needed to go. A key exception? “These beams are beautiful already,” Chyenne said. “I am a sucker for wooden beams, and there are several to work with, so I am pumped about that.”

Team Ty’s finished kitchen, as seen on Battle on the Beach, Season 4. (After, Matches Before #5)

The Kitchen Challenge, After

If you find this flip stunning, join the club. (We mean that literally: Chyenne and Kristin cultivated what they called a “beachside country-club vibe.”) Since the home was awash in natural light, they were able to introduce moodiness with dark maroon paint and rustic terra cotta backsplash tiles without overwhelming the space. The reoriented island replacing the home’s tackily tiled peninsula reveals original hardwood flooring Team Ty was delighted to discover and refinish — a $1,020 investment that paid off immediately.

A first timer’s guide to Prince Edward Island

May 25, 2024 • 8 min read

tours for oak island

Experience a colorful slice of island life on your first visit to Prince Edward Island © Peter Unger / Getty Images

Long sandy beaches backed with red cliffs. Freshly caught lobster, oysters and clams. Toe-tapping music at lively kitchen parties or local pubs. And plenty of outdoor adventures, from cycling to kayaking to hiking. In the Gulf of St Lawrence, on Canada’s eastern shores,  Prince Edward Island  (PEI) may be the country’s smallest province, but there’s plenty to see and do.

Besides its natural setting, PEI’s other claim to fame is a series of early 20th-century novels about a feisty red-haired girl. Lucy Maud Montgomery set the Anne of Green Gables books around her PEI hometown of Cavendish, and several island attractions can tell you more about the noted author and the beloved Canadian character she created.

You can visit Prince Edward Island as part of an Atlantic Canada road trip – the nearly 13km-long (8-mile) Confederation Bridge connects PEI to the mainland – or come for a peaceful beach escape. Bring your bathing suit and your appetite too. PEI’s nickname is “Canada’s food island.”

Here's all you need to know to plan your first trip to Prince Edward Island.

A row of shops with colorfully painted storefronts set on a slight incline

When should I go to Prince Edward Island?

PEI shines under the summer sun, its short peak season running from late June into September. The weather is typically warm, with temperatures hovering around 20–25ºC (70–80ºF), prime time for beach-going, hiking and picnicking. With cooler mornings and evenings, the weather stays temperate into October, as the leaves take on their autumn reds and golds. Fall brings food fests too, including the  Fall Flavours Festival and the  PEI International Shellfish Festival .

Many island businesses are seasonal, opening in May or June and closing in September or by the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend in October. Prices are typically somewhat lower in the shoulder months of May, June, September and October. Expect more rain and varied temperatures in both fall and spring, although you might have mild, sunny days too, which are good for hiking, bicycling and island exploring.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June to November, although the worst storms have previously hit the maritime provinces in the fall. Expect snow anytime between November and April, with fierce winter winds making the temperatures feel much colder than the average ranges of -11ºC to -3ºC (11–26ºF).

Planning a longer trip?  These are the best times to visit Canada

How much time should I spend on Prince Edward Island?

If you have a long weekend, start in Charlottetown , exploring the province’s historic capital, and learn about its role as the “the birthplace of Confederation,” creating the union that would become the country of Canada. Have a drink overlooking the waterfront, then grab a bite from one of the vendors in  Founders Food Hall . Your next stop is Cavendish on the island’s north shore, where several sights tell you about the Anne of Green Gables story. Then explore the beaches of  Prince Edward Island National Park , perhaps taking a hike through the Greenwich dunes before dinner at  Dalvay by the Sea , a historic summer home turned inn. The next day, go kayaking or cycling. Dig into a traditional lobster supper, ending your trip with music in a local pub.

To explore more of the island, plan a one-week road trip. After your time in Charlottetown, Cavendish and the national park, drive west for an Indigenous cultural experience on  Lennox Island , a Mi’kmaq community. Circle the island’s west side, sampling the spuds at the  Canadian Potato Museum , stopping for a lunchtime concert at the Stompin’ Tom Centre  and spending the night in the West Point Lighthouse . Returning to Charlottetown, stop off in the village of Victoria by the Sea for a lobster roll or freshly steamed mussels. If you have more time, continue east to Souris for a cruise on a lobster boat.

A long, narrow road bridge runs from the shoreline across the sea and stretches into the distance beyond the horizon

How do I get to Prince Edward Island?

You can fly non-stop to  Charlottetown Airport (YYG) from Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa year round, and seasonally from Calgary and smaller Canadian cities. For more flight options, consider jetting into Nova Scotia’s  Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), which has non-stop flights to additional Canadian, US and European cities. It’s a three-hour drive or bus trip from Halifax airport to PEI over the Confederation Bridge.  Maritime Bus can take you to Charlottetown from Halifax airport or from other destinations in Nova Scotia and neighboring New Brunswick.

Although PEI has no train service, Canada’s national rail carrier, Via Rail , can bring you from Montreal or Quebec City to Halifax or to Moncton, New Brunswick. From there, take the bus or rent a car to continue to the island.

How do I get around Prince Edward Island?

In compact, walkable Charlottetown, most attractions are along the waterfront or in the historic center.  T3 Transit , the island’s public transit service, runs buses to Charlottetown Airport and around the city. T3 Transit’s rural routes provide limited service between Charlottetown and other island destinations. While services are infrequent, the fares are fantastic value – only C$2 to travel anywhere on the island – if you can align your travels with the bus schedule.

PEI is relatively flat, making it a good destination for cyclists. Following the route of a decommissioned rail line, the  Confederation Trail runs 273km (170 miles) through the island center, and you can also cycle the Island Walk, which takes you primarily on less-busy roads.

Top things to do on Prince Edward Island

Go to the beach.

PEI has dozens of them. Some of the best stretches of sand are along the north shore in Prince Edward Island National Park, but there are sandy beaches around the island.

Dive into a novel

Learn the story of Anne of Green Gables , one of Canada’s most beloved fictional characters, and her creator Lucy Maud Montgomery at sights like  Green Gables Heritage Place or Anne of Green Gables Museum .

Catch your dinner with a fiddling fisherman

JJ Chaisson is a lobster fisher and musician. Along with his wife Julie, he runs  The Fiddling Fisherman , taking guests out on their family fishing boat for a lobster dinner, accompanied by music from Chaisson’s fiddle.

Learn about Indigenous culture

Take a food, music or art workshop in the First Nations community of Lennox Island. You might learn to bake bannock – a biscuit-like bread – over an open fire, get an introduction to traditional quill work, or craft your own moose-hide drum.

Clap along at a ceilidh

Drawing on Irish, Scottish and maritime traditions, a ceilidh (pronounced KAY-lee) is part concert and part kitchen party, blending lively fiddle music, singing, dancing and storytelling. These musical events take place in pubs, community halls and concert venues across Prince Edward Island.

My favorite thing to do on Prince Edward Island

My favorite thing to do on PEI is walk, following sections of the  Island Walk , a 700km (435-mile) route around the entire isle. Modeled after Spain’s Camino de Santiago (though without a pilgrimage history), the Island Walk has 32 sections of 20–25km (12–15 miles) each, which take you along PEI’s sandy beaches and into its forests, above its red cliffs and through its small towns. You can walk for a day, a week, or more, listening to the splash of the surf, the chirps of the birds and the quiet sounds of island life.

If you’d like help planning an extended walk, contact  Go for a Walk: Island Walk Coordination Service and  Outer Limit Sports , local outfits who can organize a walking itinerary, provide luggage transfer services and arrange accommodations. You can cycle the Island Walk, too. MacQueen’s Bike Shop  in Charlottetown rents bicycles and provides trip-planning services for cyclists.

How much money do I need for Prince Edward Island?

While PEI isn’t as pricey as major Canadian cities like Vancouver or Toronto, it’s not inexpensive either, especially during the summer high season. The island has only a few budget lodgings, with dorm beds starting at C$50 and basic doubles around C$120. Many traditional inns and B&Bs fall into the midrange, beginning around C$150 per night. If you’re watching your loonies, consider a cottage or motel room with a kitchen where you can prepare some of your own meals.

Take public transit if you can. T3 Transit fares for adults are only C$2 a ride, whether you’re traveling within the capital or across the island, and kids ride free. Neither Uber nor Lyft currently operate on PEI, but  Kari , a local rideshare company, provides service, primarily in the Charlottetown area. Depending on the season, car rentals in Charlottetown range from C$50 to over C$100 per day.

Some sample food and drink prices around PEI:

  • Coffee: C$3–4
  • Craft beer in an island taproom: C$8–10
  • Pound of PEI mussels: C$14–18
  • Lobster roll: C$27 and up
  • Traditional lobster supper:  C$50–60 per person

Several people linger outside a seaside lobster restaurant, where a busker is playing a guitar

Wear the lobster bib

Many seafood restaurants give you a bib to wear if you’ve ordered a whole lobster. Don’t be shy – tie it on to protect your clothes. Eating a lobster can be a messy business.

Pack layers and rain gear

While the weather is generally temperate from spring through fall, it can get breezy and cool by the shore or in the evening and it can rain at any time. Keep a light jacket or sweater in your day pack. PEI winters are cold, damp and often snowy. Not only do you need warm jackets, hats, gloves and boots, but be prepared for winter travel conditions, including snow-covered roads and high winds.

It’s colder on the water

If you’re heading out on a lobster boat or other cruise, remember that it’s chillier on the water, even in summer. Bring a jacket or clothes you can layer.

“Ask an Islander”

If you want to know more about Prince Edward Island or have a question while planning your trip, “Ask an Islander.” On the website of  Tourism PEI , the provincial tourism organization, you can post a question and a local resident will answer your query.

Deputies intercept human smuggling operation, 26 victims, none dead

by SBG San Antonio Staff Reports

According to the Bexar Country Sheriff Javier Salazar, 26 victims were discovered inside a goose-neck trailer with a mesh, false compartment.

SAN ANTONIO - Deputies intercepted a large human smuggling operation in South Bexar County involving 26 victims on Thursday.

Authorities were called out just after noon Thursday to an area on Loop 1604 and Oak Island Drive near Applewhite Road.

According to the Bexar Country Sheriff Javier Salazar, 26 victims were discovered inside a goose-neck trailer with a mesh, false compartment. It is believed that the trailer was coming from the Laredo area, a three-hour drive away with temperatures dangerously close to triple digits. There was no air conditioning inside the truck.

"There's no AC, there's no running water, they've got buckets that everybody has been utilizing as toilets. I didn't even see any source of drinking water, but it's miserable conditions there and it's just blazing hot in there," said Sheriff Salazar.

11 victims were transported to the hospital with heat-related illnesses, scrapes, and bruises. The remaining 19 victims were taken in for questioning.

Multiple people fled the scene as authorities arrived, and law enforcement is still trying to determine the difference between the suspects and victims.

Ballistic vests and long-neck rifles were found, and seven suspects have been detained so far.

"This is the fault of the cartels that put those people at risk, the way that the system is now, there's no reason for these victims to be smuggled across," said Salazar.

When asked how often we are seeing situations like this happen around Bexar County, Salazar told us this is the first large one we have seen in a while, but that doesn't mean they aren't happening. He pointed to Biden's new executive order as a potential solution, saying it creates rewards if you report smuggling.

To report a human-smuggling operation, call the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at (210) 355-6000.

We're gathering more information and will get that to you as soon as it becomes available.
