Although Carnaval is most famously celebrated in Brazil, it is also celebrated with considerable pomp in several Mexican communities.

Veracruz and Mazatlán, among other places, host their respective Carnaval celebrations beginning in the middle of February. Large-scale festivities, including parades, fireworks, and dancing, continue right up until Ash Wednesday.

Parades with elaborate costumes and floats, music, and dancing in the streets characterize this Mexican occasion, which is similar to the French and American Mardi Gras celebrations. Celebrations last all day and into the night, with participants donning costumes and releasing cascarones (eggshells loaded with confetti).

Take in the views by going on a guided tour of the Ek Balam complex, which is located to the north of Valladolid . You won’t find nearly as many tourists here, so you’ll have the opportunity to feel more immersed in genuine Mayan culture.

The ruins are located deep within the forest, and after you’ve explored them, you can finish the day off by swimming in the cenote Xcan Ché, which is located nearby.

Due to the one-of-a-kind stucco work that can’t be found anywhere else in Yucatan , the Mayan ruins at Ek Balam are unquestionably worth a visit. The wing-clad soldiers and the enormous gaping maw of hell are both very interesting.

Isla Holbox is the closest thing that Mexico has to its own Caribbean island, and it is located just a few miles off the northeastern tip of the Yucatan peninsula. A very short ferry trip from the port town of Chiquila is required to reach the pedestrian-only barrier island.

Riviera Maya

Even though the island of Cozumel is technically a part of the Riviera Maya, the sheer beauty of the island and its remoteness from the mainland make it deserving of special recognition. Only 12 miles off the coast, it's easy to reach via ferry from Playa del Carmen or a short flight from the Cancun airport . While many tourists in Cancun head to Cozumel just to spend the day, those who have been there know that this idyllic island is worth a vacation in and of itself.

Diving and snorkeling are the prime activities around Cozumel, which is right in the heart of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world. Cabo San Lucas

At the southern tip of Baja California Sur is the popular resort town of Cabo San Lucas. The party scene downtown is especially popular with groups of friends visiting for bachelor or bachelorette parties, but Cabo is also a destination with lots to do for families. Winter is actually when Cabo experiences the best weather of the year , with the average high temperature hovering around 81 degrees Fahrenheit. It's also one of the busiest times to visit and travelers should plan out reservations long in advance, especially during the Christmas holidays when kids are out of school.

Perhaps an even bigger draw than the ideal weather is the perks of visiting during whale season . While this can all be done on a day trip from Guadalajara, nothing beats spending a couple of nights in an authentic rural hacienda.

Apart from tequila, the state of Jalisco is also the birthplace of quintessential Mexican traditions like mariachi music and charrería , the country's national rodeo sport. You can—and should—see them both while in the area. Mexican cuisine varies from state to state, so don't expect to just eat tacos everywhere you go. In Jalisco, the specialties are tortas ahogadas , a saucy sandwich, and birria , a meat stew often made with goat or mutton.

Winter isn't just whale season in Mexico; it's also butterfly season. When it gets too cold in the U.S. and Canada for monarch butterflies to survive, they make a 3,000-mile journey to the Monarch Buttery Biosphere Reserve in Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The reserve straddles the states of Michoacan and the State of Mexico, just under two hours away from the capital Mexico City so it's easy to reach for a day trip or weekend excursion.

Up to a billion butterflies make their winter home in the area, so many that the sound of their wings flapping mimics rainfall. There can be so many on a tree at one time that their weight actually causes the branches to bend. The butterflies start to arrive in November, but they're most active during the cooler months of January and February. Generally speaking the weather in Mexico in February is significantly warmer than a cold Canadian or European winter .

What is the Average Temperature?

In February, temperatures are very different depending on the region. In the north, temperatures can range from lows of 2°C (35 Fahrenheit) to highs of 29°C (84 Fahrenheit).

Does it Snow in Mexico in February?

In Mexico, it is rare to find daytime temperatures below the freezing point. 

In the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, snow is unheard of.

In Mexico City, you will not find snow in the city itself but in the surrounding mountain ranges it is not uncommon to see snow-covered mountain peaks. There are a few places up north such as Durango and Chihuahua that do receive snow in the winter months. 

Puerto Vallarta is one of my favorite places in Mexico no matter what time of year, but this is a good one!

Sea Temperature

If you are a water sports enthusiast February is a great time to partake in all the fun. The average sea temperature in the Caribbean is 26.4°C (80 Fahrenheit) and 23.9°C (75 Fahrenheit) in the Pacific. 

Now let’s get into more detail with a breakdown of specific regions in Mexico and their weather in February. 

Mexico City: Time to Explore the City!

A city break to Mexico City in February is a great time to visit. February is right around the time when the jacarandas are in bloom, so the city is alive with purple blossoms.

The weather is mild, and the sun shines a nice warmth over the city. The days aren’t extremely hot which allows you to explore the vibrant city without sweating profusely or overheating.

In the evening, the air cools off as the sun goes down so packing a light jacket will be a great idea to keep warm, especially if you are out and about in the night. Check out our full Mexico City packing list to make sure you are ready for whenever you decide to visit.

Precipitation is rare in Mexico City in February and humidity levels are low. 

You can plan to wear summer clothing during the days while exploring Mexico City but in the evenings you might find pants and a jacket appropriate for the cooler air. 

Average Temperature:

The average daytime temperature in Mexico City in February is 24°C (75 Fahrenheit) and can drop to a low of 6°C (42 Fahrenheit) in the night.

The biggest problem with the cold in Mexico City is that most buildings aren’t made to deal with the cold, so it can often feel colder inside your Airbnb rental than is actually is outside. Make sure to bring some comfortable sweatpants and a sweatshirt for lounging and to keep you warm in the mornings and evenings.

Mexico City is a magical place.

Precipitation:

On average there is a 9% chance of rainfall.  The amount of rain is 12 mm or less. Wet season in Mexico Season runs from around late-June until early October, so you can come in February safe in the fact that rain is a rarity.

It is extremely rare to experience snow in Mexico City in February. In the four years that I lived in Mexico City, I never saw snow in winter in Mexico City.

Activities:

February is a great time to explore historical sights around the city such as the Centro Historico, Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, or  Teotihuacan Pyramids . 

There is a special holiday in Mexico in February on the 2nd called Dia de la Candelaria where families bring baby Jesus figures to the church to be blessed, and after gathering to eat tamales. 

Valentine’s Day is also celebrated as it would be in other North American cultures. 

Oaxaca is a great place in Mexico in February.

Oaxaca: Explore the City or Hit the Beach.

Oaxaca is a diverse and exciting state in southern Mexico. From beaches on the Pacific Ocean to Mountain Ranges – Oaxaca has it all. Oaxaca is also one of the few states where pure mezcal can be produced.

If you are searching for summer-like climates visiting Oaxaca in February is the perfect month. Even though February is considered to be one of the cooler months of the year in Oaxaca, you will want to spend most of your time in shorts and beach clothing, especially if you head to the coast. 

The state of Oaxaca is expansive with so much diversity. You will find varying temperatures in each city. The coastal town of Puerto Escondido is great for a surfing getaway.

The beaches and bays in Huatulco are a fun getaway. Or explore the Oaxaca Magic Town of Mazunte with golden sunsets and crashing ocean waves, or stop in for a mezcal tasting in Oaxaca City .

February is considered dry season in Oaxaca which is due to the amount of precipitation that falls. Humidity is lower than it would be in the summer months and temperatures are moderate. 

Blue skies and sunny days are on the forecast. In the evenings, a sweet breeze rolls through cooling off the air. In the southern coastal beach towns of Oaxaca, your average temperature will be roughly 29°C (84 Fahrenheit), while inland Oaxaca will be slightly cooler with temperatures averages of roughly 25°C (77 Fahrenheit).  

The ocean temperature is warm, perfect for swimming, surfing, and lazy days at the beach. 

The average daytime temperature in Oaxaca in February is 29°C (84 Fahrenheit), with an average low of 10°C (50 Fahrenheit) at night. 

On an average day, there is an 11% chance of rainfall with the amount being 12 mm.

There is a slim-to-none chance that you will ever experience snow in Oaxaca. 

Sea Temperature:

The average water temperature in the Pacific Ocean bordering Oaxaca is 28°C (82 Fahrenheit) perfect for all water activities.

Don’t miss Carnival celebrations in Oaxaca in February. In various towns across the state, you will find grand celebrations of parades with lavish costumes and dancing. 

There are so many wonderful cities in Mexico worth visiting.

Los Cabos: Beach Go-ers delight!

Take a winter escape to the vibrant beach towns in Los Cabos ,  located at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. 

The weather in Los Cabos in February is perfect for lazy days spent at the beach, swimming and snorkeling in the ocean, and exploring what the towns have to offer.  

Here you can choose between San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas . Or you can head to hidden gems like Cabo Pulmo. Or perhaps you want to escape the crowds to the dusty town of Todos Santos .

Los Cabos in February calls for sunny days with perfect heat for summer clothing, with ocean breezy evenings. Humidity levels are lower in February as well. Pack a sweater or a light jacket to keep warm during the evenings. 

If you are a lover of the ocean and its beautiful habitats, February is prime time for whale watching and fishing trips.

The average daytime temperature has a high of 27°C (80 Fahrenheit) and an average nighttime low of 16°C (60 Fahrenheit).

In February, rainfall is rare due to the desert climate of Los Cabos. You can expect to see only one rainy day in February with less than 5 mm of rainfall.  

There is a scarce chance that you will witness snow in Los Cabos in February (or any other month for that matter!).

The ocean’s average ocean temperature is 23°C (73 Fahrenheit). If you plan to do snorkeling or surfing, I highly recommend hiring a wetsuit. It may feel warm at first but 10 minutes or more in the water and you’ll start to feel that wintery chill creep in.

Be sure to catch the Todos Santos Art Festival running in early February. A week-long exhibition of everything involving art. You can witness traditional Mexican folklore dancing performances, musical acts, sculptures, paintings, jewelry, and so much more. 

February is also a great month for whale watching. Find species such as Humpback Whales, Grey Whales, and Blue Whales. Dolphin sightings are very common in February as well as jumping rays, which you can usually see from the shore in Cabo San Lucas. 

Puerto Vallarta: A warm sunny beach getaway

Make your way down to the Pacific Coast of Mexico and plan your winter getaway at the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta. 

Puerto Vallarta has so much to offer. Great beaches for relaxing, swimming, snorkeling, water activities, thrilling excursions, and a fantastic culinary and nightlife scene.  

February is a great time to visit Puerto Vallarta due to its heavenly sunny days and cool ocean breezy evenings. Days are perfectly spent lounging at the beach or poolside.  The sun is out and the weather is hot giving you that blissful golden sunkissed skin. 

Evenings tend to cool off a bit so pack a sweater and even a pair of pants to keep warm. 

One of my favorite things about visiting is enjoying all of the best restaurants in Puerto Vallarta , of which there are many.

Whale-watching season in Puerto Vallarta is at its peak in February. The Humpback Whales come to give birth to their baby calves. It is common to see them flapping their tails in the water out at sea right from the beach. 

The average daily high in Puerto Vallarta in February is 27°C (80 Fahrenheit), with an average low temperature of 17°C (62 Fahrenheit).

February is the dry season for Puerto Vallarta with little to no rainfall. You can expect a 4% chance of rain on an average day with the amount being less than 17 mm.

The chance of seeing snow in Puerto Vallarta in February is extremely rare.

Ocean Temperature:

The average ocean temperature is 23.9°C (75 Fahrenheit), a little chilly in comparison to other months.

Puerto Vallarta is full of different events and markets during February, especially Carnival, which is growing in popularity here. Check out the local listings to see what will be on when you are visiting.

February is one of the best times of the year to see humpback whales in their natural wild habitat.   You can also spend your days relaxing on the beach, exploring the ocean with snorkeling and scuba diving excursions, or wandering down the Malecon.  

Tulum and the whole Riviera Maya is a wonderful place in February in Mexico.

Cancun: The Perfect Winter Getaway

If you are looking for blue waters, white sand, and palm tree-lined beaches then Cancun is just the place for you. 

Located on the Northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, the weather in Cancun in February brings the perfect climate for a winter beach escape.

In February, you can expect warm sunny days with blue skies. The sun is hot but the air is breezy with low humidity levels. These are the best days for sitting out on the beach and working on your tan.

February in Cancun is time for Carnival. Catch locally organized music events, parades, fireworks, outdoor dancing, contests, and amazing food. This is a party you won’t want to miss. 

February is also a great time for exploring all the theme parks in the area.  The climate isn’t extremely hot and the humidity levels are down so you can enjoy your time without so much sweat or dehydration. 

February in Cancun brings an average daily high temperature of 28°C (82 Fahrenheit) with an average low of 19°C (66 Fahrenheit).

February in Cancun is the third driest month of the year. There is the possibility it might rain 4 days out of the month with about 55.9 mm of precipitation.

Snow in Cancun is an extremely rare event. 

The Caribbean Sea holds an average temperature of 26.4 °C (79 Fahrenheit) in February. 

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with a romantic candle-lit dinner on the beach, or take part in the fun festivities during Carnival in Cancun. 

February is a great time in Cancun for water activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Also, trips to Coba or Chichen Itza are more enjoyable due to the milder temperatures.

Riviera Maya: A Caribbean Paradise

Escape winter and head down south for a Caribean beach getaway.  February is a fantastic time for a trip to the Riviera Maya . 

The Riviera Maya is located on the eastern end of the Yucatan Peninsula – extending from just south of Cancun through Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and reaching all the way south to Tulum . 

February in the Riviera Maya brings warm temperatures and low humidity levels. The skies are blue, to match the ocean and, the sun is shining bright and warm.

The evenings cool off with fresh breezy air rolling off of the sea. Pack a light sweater to keep warm during the fresh aired nights. Spend your days relaxing on the beach under the sun or exploring the sea in the beautiful blue calm waters. 

Check out the beach clubs in Tulum , the best nightlife in Playa del Carmen , and all of the fun things to do in Puerto Morelos .

February in the Riviera Maya brings an average daytime high of 28°C (82 Fahrenheit) and a low of 21°C (69 Fahrenheit). 

You might find rainfall 3 days a month with an average of 43 mm across those 3 days. 

It is a very rare case to see snow in the Mayan Riviera.

The Caribbean Sea in February has an average temperature of 25.8°C (78 Fahrenheit). This water is perfect for swimming and snorkeling!

Take part in Carnival celebrations in Cozumel , Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. 

February is a great month to scuba dive with the bull sharks in Playa del Carmen as this is when the pregnant females migrate to the warm waters of the Caribbean to give birth to their young. 

Also, because of the mild weather and low humidity levels, February is a great time to explore outdoor historical sites such as the Coba and Chichen Itza .

1. Mexico City

Wondering where to go for your first trip to Mexico? Start in the bustling capital that brims with skyscrapers, markets, gardens and parks , awe-inspiring museums and more than 22 million residents.

Top Mexico City sights include “Casa Azul,” better known as Museo Frida Kahlo , where the celebrated artist lived and died. High-spirited high jinks and chihuahua-sized micheladas are on offer when catching a lucha libre (Mexican wrestling) match at the sprawling Arena México .

Holbox (pronounced hol-bosh) is a laid-back dream of an island off the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula .

With no vehicles to disturb the peace (cars are banned), sandy streets lead to endless beaches with warm, inviting water that’s waist-deep at most for adults. The island’s one alleged drawback? Questionable wi-fi, which encourages travelers to disconnect.

3. San Miguel de Allende

This Mexican beauty has it all: a fantastic spring-like climate, extraordinary light, breathtaking architecture, superb handicraft shopping, and well-attended art workshops. With a high gallery-to-resident ratio, San Miguel de Allende is one of the best places for creative types to visit in Mexico.

The cobbled city has been luring retirees and bewitching artists since the first art institute opened in a former convent back in the 1930s. It then enticed Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Neal Cassady, who came to drink, write and read poetry in the 1960s (the latter stayed there until his death).

Today, San Miguel de Allende’s narrow, sloped streets house boutiques and cafes that dangle multicolored ribbons from wrought iron window bars, and its vibe is akin to a sepia-toned postcard from the past.

In this versatile beach destination, families build sandcastles alongside digital nomads and solo travelers seeking spirited adventures, while night owls congregate around Calle 12 (12th St) for throbbing nights at Mandala, La Vaquita and Coco Bongo. Another Playa del Carmen accolade is the variety of rooftop bars, from the sleek UMI Rooftop and Tokyo Kitchen to the laid-back BeRoof .

From Playa (as locals call it), day trips to Riviera Maya towns like Akumal (known for turtle encounters) are all within easy reach using colectivos (minivans). There is also a direct ferry to Cozumel with Winjet or Ultramar .

8. Chichén Itzá

Best place to see pre-Columbian architecture

If you’ve always wanted to see one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Chichén Itzá is one of the best places to go in Mexico. With origins dating back to the 5th century, this is undoubtedly the most popular of Mexico's ancient sights.

From the imposing, monolithic El Castillo pyramid (where the shadow of the plumed serpent god Kukulcán creeps down the staircase during the spring and autumn equinoxes) to the Sacred Cenote and curiously designed El Caracol observatory, Chichén Itzá is spectacular.

Planning tip : Book a Chichén Itzá tour with an English-speaking guide to learn about the mind-blowing legacy of Maya astronomers . Note that the heat, humidity and crowds in Chichén Itzá can be fierce, so try to explore the site either early in the morning or late in the afternoon, though keep in mind that the 5pm closing is a hard exit. There is also a post-sunset sound-and-light show .

9. Zihuatanejo

Best place for an Old-Mexico feel

Zihuatanejo benefited from the fortunes of neighboring resort town Ixtapa, which Mexico’s tourism body carefully developed in the 1970s. This was a direct attempt to replicate the Caribbean splendor of Cancún on the Pacific coast.

Ixtapa’s hotspot status trickled 6.5km (4 miles) south to Zihuatanejo, which feels like a sleepy fishing village elevated by a handful of relaxed seaside sanctuaries like Thompson Zihuatanejo on Playa La Ropa .

In this blissed-out traditional Guerrero town, there are storied, curiously named beaches that are great for surfing, diving, fishing and seafood-feasting in the presence of crashing waves.

Take a walk on Playa Las Gatas (Cat Beach), reportedly named after land wildcats or the whiskered nurse sharks in Zihua’s waters, or make a dash for the aforementioned Playa La Ropa (Clothes Beach), the town’s most popular beach, which incorporates a legend of a Spanish shore wreckage containing washed silk clothes.

Best place for quiet beaches

La Paz , the capital of Baja California Sur, has something for every kind of beach lover. The city is a delightful springboard to adventures on the Sea of Cortez, home to 39% of the world’s marine mammals.

Around 40 minutes from La Paz, Playa El Saltito feels tranquil and isolated during the sweltering days, and its crystal waters come alive with bioluminescence at night. Though competition is tough, Playa Balandra , with its unique mushroom-like rock formation, is heralded as one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches.

The impossible-to-miss destination in the region is the Unesco-listed Espíritu Santo  island, where you can camp under a canopy of stunning stars, snorkel with playful sea lions and even peek at congresses of clumsy blue-footed boobies. A number of operators run activities here, including kayaking and snorkeling.

Best place for wellness and boho vibes

Over the years, Tulum shed its former name (Zama), and its position as a secluded and sleepy beach-meets-jungle town in Riviera Maya and subsequently ripened into a world-famous pilgrimage for honeymooners, hedonists and holistic tourists. The spirituality-focused traveler will find a host of things to do in Tulum ranging from cacao ceremonies to pre-Hispanic sound healing and open-air rooftop yoga classes.

Tulum is a well-rounded destination with scrumptious restaurants and bars, and accommodations for all budgets, from waterfront shacks to top-end resorts and thatch-roofed boutique boltholes like La Valise Tulum .

The beaches are postcard-ready, the most celebrated stretch being Playa Ruinas with its strikingly well-preserved Maya ruins perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. There are also numerous attractions in the surrounding area, such as the massive Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an , the secluded fishing village Punta Allen and the ruins of Cobá .

Planning tip : Tulum Pueblo (the town center) is where the really cheap eats and sleeps are found, but it’s a 20-minute bike ride or 12-minute taxi to the beach. Plan ahead to find well-priced beach accommodations if that’s where you’d prefer to stay.

12. Los Cabos

Best place for glitz, glamor and parties

Sister cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo need no introduction. The former is notorious among party-hearty North American crowds, while the latter is more sedate with art galleries, celebrity-frequented luxury resorts, upscale boutiques and over-the-top decadent tequila tasting rooms.

Together, these perennially sunny spots on the southernmost tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula have become two of the top places to see in Mexico.

Under the blazing Cabo sun, golfers chase their dreams on emerald greens designed by legendary champion Jack Nicklaus, and surfers tackle world-class surf breaks.

Not many beaches are safe for swimming, but other outdoor pursuits like deep-sea fishing, spotting sea lions and whale watching (from mid-December to mid-April) keep water babies coming back.

13. Pico de Orizaba

Best place for a superlative trek

Pico de Orizaba is a symmetrical, snow-capped volcano on the border of Puebla and Veracruz states. Also called Citlaltépetl, it’s the highest peak in Mexico and the third-highest mountain in North America, with a summit elevation of around 5636m (18,491ft) above sea level.

Dormant but not extinct, the last recorded eruption was in 1846, and it is one of the most popular places to visit in Mexico for serious climbers – professionals prep there before taking on Mount Everest. Treks start from the small village of Tlachichuca, and the ascent requires some technical skills – Pico de Orizaba is the ultimate trekking and climbing challenge in Mexico.

If sea-level thrills are more to your liking, there's plenty on offer in the town of Orizaba, including a beautiful riverside walk, a couple of impressive museums and galleries and a unique "Iron Palace. " The perfect introduction to Veracruz state's most appealing town is to hop into the cable car up to the park atop 1240m (4068ft) Cerro del Borrego.

From this lofty, green perch, you can admire the domes and bell towers of the city's many historic churches and the surrounding mountainous terrain, including the snowcapped summit of Pico de Orizaba.

14. Copper Canyon Railway

Best train ride

The Ferrocarril Chihuahua Pacífico (Copper Canyon Railway) remains one of Latin America’s best rail trips. Also known as the Chepe Express (from the “Ch” of Chihuahua and “P” of Pacífico), trains climb from sea level at Los Mochis to the town of Creel via the sensational rocky landscapes of the rust-hued Copper Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of Mexico”).

Vistas from your window during the train journey include alpine forests, subtropical valleys, Tarahumara villages and glimpses of some of the world’s deepest canyons.

Overnight en route at cinematic lodges overlooking the canyon's edge, or stay for days of exploring, hiking, horseback riding and even zip-lining in one of the best places to see in Mexico.

15. Oaxaca City

Best place for mezcal and cultural celebrations

Once the capital of the Zapotec Civilization, the state of Oaxaca is now better known as Mexico’s primary mezcal-producing region. Fine mezcals distilled around the state make their way to low-lit, atmospheric establishments in Oaxaca City like La Popular, El Destilado and La Mezcalerita, and savvy locals guide thirsty patrons on popular tours to experience the city one smoky sip at a time (check out Mezcouting and Oaxacking ).

The frequent colorful fiestas in Oaxaca City also win smiles from cultural travelers. The city’s population swells at the start of November during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festivities, when Mexican families honor and celebrate their lost loves with round-the-clock vigils, joyful offerings, and parades.

One of the most unique things to see in Oaxaca City is the merrymaking during Noche de Rábanos (Night of the Radishes) on December 23. During this competition dating back to 1897, the young and old carve radishes into scenes that are displayed in Zócalo to much fanfare.

Planning tip : Venture two hours outside of Oaxaca City to reach Hierve el Agua , a jaw-dropping petrified waterfall-like formation. You can take a bus, rent a car or hire a driver to take you to these mineral-rich infinity pools.

Cabo has so many fantastic things to do , as well, from visiting the natural rock formations at El Arco de Cabo San Lucas , to swimming and snorkeling on its calmer beaches. Keep in mind, many of the beaches around the peninsula are not safe for swimming. But a handful of beaches are renowned for their warm, calm, cove-like waters and fantastic snorkeling conditions. Playa Chileno is one of my favorites.

For some of Los Cabos' history and culture, the city of San Jose del Cabo is perfect. Its downtown has cobblestone streets, a massive main square, and dozens of art galleries, restaurants, and boutiques. San Jose del Cabo is my favorite place to visit when I'm visiting the Los Cabos destination, particularly for its farm-to-table food scene at places like Flora Farms, Acre, and Tamarindos .

While there's no denying the appeal of Mexico's larger beach resorts, there's much to be said for paying a visit to some of the country's many smaller vacation destinations. Two of the very best are the towns of Ixtapa and its neighbor, the much smaller former fishing village of Zihuatanejo on the country's Pacific coast.

Although the larger of the two, the former coconut and mango-producing town of Ixtapa has been carefully master-planned as a tourist hub to good effect – its streets and beaches are uncluttered and easy to get around. Be sure to book one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Ixtapa.

The contrast to traditional beach resorts is even greater in beautiful Zihuatanejo, which has worked hard to keep its small-town feel. Still, the town offers a lengthy list of things to do . Lying along a small, well-protected bay, it's a delightful and safe town to explore, home to a number of fine hotels and restaurants. Fun activities include shopping in its fish market or, better still, taking a fishing excursion to catch something of your own.

Famous as the only fortified Mayan settlement located on the coast, the ancient city of Tulum is one of the Yucatán Peninsula's most visited attractions. In the Mayan Riviera and within easy reach of the beaches of Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel, the site's well-preserved ruins can be seen for miles around due to their location atop 12-meter-high cliffs overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

Tulum is also famous for its tall walls, giving the site the feel of a fortress and suggesting a military, as well as religious significance. Second only to Mexico City in size, Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco, has successfully conserved its unique mix of colonial and native Tapatíos influences. Famous for its broad avenues flanked by picturesque parks and fine old buildings notable for their European flair, Guadalajara is a hotbed of traditional Mexican culture, from the mariachi music that seems to emanate everywhere, to its fascinating Charreadas, a type of rodeo that is usually accompanied by festivities such as dancing, singing, and plenty of great food.

It's a fun city to explore on foot due to the four large squares that together form the shape of a cross and comprise the old city center. Its leafy, tree-lined streets are flanked by great restaurants and galleries, and it has some of the best hotels in the city. Villa Ganz Boutique Hotel is a personal favorite, housed in a 1930s villa with a beautiful and tranquil backyard.

The capital of Yucatán, Mérida is one of Mexico's finest old colonial cities and is perfectly located to serve as a base from which to explore the region's many fine Mayan sites, including Chichén Itzá and Tulum. It's an equally popular day trip or overnight stopover from the resorts of the Mayan Riviera. Established in 1542 by the Spanish, Mérida is laid out on a grid pattern, making it easy to explore its numerous attractive parks and fine old buildings.

European influences are everywhere, particularly in the old city squares and plazas where evidence of French architecture can still be seen. It's also a remarkably neat and tidy city, something of a badge of honor for its citizens who like to dress in white, giving the city its long-standing nickname of Ciudad Blanca, the "white city."

My favorite place to hang out in Merida is near the Parque de Santa Lucia . Not far from the broad and historic Paseo de Montejo Boulevard, and close to the shopping and restaurants of Calle 59, Parque Santa Lucia is in the heart of the action and a nice, shady spot to escape the infamous Merida humidity.

Capital of the state of the same name, Oaxaca is one of the most popular city destinations for travelers interested in sampling a taste of the real Mexico. An interesting mix of native indigenous and Spanish elements, the city has remained largely untouched by the kind of large developments that have sprung up in some of the country's other popular destinations, and as a consequence, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

In addition to its unspoiled city center and old architecture, the city has become a cultural hub that draws crowds for its numerous events and festivals, including the spectacular Guelaguetza , an indigenous festival that takes place each July and includes traditional dancing, costumes, music, food, and crafts. The city also makes a great jumping-off point to explore the splendid surrounding scenery, along with numerous ancient ruins such as those of the Monte Alban .

One of my favorite things to do in Oaxaca is to take a trip to the magical Hierve El Agua natural mineral pools . These beautiful clifftop pools , which are open to the public for swimming, have spectacular views out over the surrounding valley and mountains. Even more impressive, from a distance, the spillage from the pool has calcified to the cliff below, creating the illusion of a waterfall frozen in time.

If you happen to extend your stay in Oaxaca, it's worth a trip down the mountains to the coast to experience some of the state's very best beaches .

A gem of a city, the colonial-era Morelia is a delightful place to linger in Mexico, whether you're here for a few days or longer. Little change has been made to the layout of this historic city, founded in 1541, and thanks to the more than 200 well-preserved buildings that date back many hundreds of years, the entire downtown core has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

A highlight of a visit is spending time in the magnificent Plaza de Armas . Laid out nearly 500 years ago, this large public square is perfect for those who like to explore on foot. In addition to its many great cafés, restaurants, and shopping opportunities, here you'll find everything from statues of revolutionary heroes to attractive stretches of gardens and pleasant fountains, making for one of the prettiest cityscapes in all of Mexico.

Nearby attractions you'll want to visit include the attractive Morelia Cathedral , built from local stone over a period of 100 years, starting in 1640, and still dominating the skyline to this day. Be sure to pop inside, too, and spend time examining interesting features, including its amazing artwork. A short walk from here is another must-see: the Morelia Aqueduct . Completed in 1789 and featuring over 250 arches, it, too, was built of local stone, and for years was the city's main source of drinking water.

If you haven't heard of it yet, chances are you will very soon. Riviera Nayarit is the stretch of coastline north of Puerto Vallarta that begins in the neighboring state of Nayarit. Familiar towns that stick out might include Sayulita , or the luxury enclave peninsula that is Punta Mita. But Riviera Nayarit has so much more to explore and is practically overgrown with natural beauty.

While Puerto Vallarta was building and expanding, surfers for decades have been flocking to the jungle-beaten paths and virgin beaches to the north. The picture is a little different these days, as once-fishing villages have turned to sleepy boutique hotel towns. Five-star resorts and villas dot the hillsides, and former surf towns have been reinvented as havens for yoga retreats and boho-chic galleries. The ultra-high-end luxury is well on its way.

Still, the more north you go up the coast, the more you'll be traveling back in time to a simpler time of Mexico beach beauty – complete with rolling, emerald-colored peaks, craggy cliffs that plummet into the ocean, and nothing but a string of shady palapas along golden-colored sand, as far as the eye can see.

A personal favorite along the Riviera Nayarit is the small village of San Pancho . It neighbors Sayulita, but receives a fraction of the tourists and is geared much more toward travelers "in the know." Things are changing, and soon San Pancho will be less of a well-kept secret, but for now, it's one of those coastal gems that makes you feel like you have the entire place to yourself.

I adore Mazatlan. In my opinion, it is one of the most underrated places to visit in Mexico . It's one of the only historic cities on the sea, which means visitors to Mazatlan have the best of both worlds. Starting from the Centro Historico, you can walk the cobblestone streets of Mazatlan's history. The Spanish colonial architecture reveals beautifully decorated cathedrals, broad plazas, and buildings bathed in bright, almost vibrating, colors.

The Centro Historico is where you'll find the charming, boutique hotels of Mazatlan, as well as its best restaurants. Directly across the main street from the historic downtown is a stretch of beautiful shoreline, which is a rarity in Mexico's historic cities.

Be sure to explore the Plaza Machado , surrounded by historic buildings, and home to the beautiful Angela Peralta theater. A walk around the square will get you to the heart of the city, and it's one of the most vibrant places for street performers, arts and crafts fairs, murals, and much more.

Up the coast is where the beach resorts can be found. These all-inclusive beachfront resorts have beautiful pools, rooms with strong air-conditioning, and sweeping views out to the Pacific. Mazatlan is also a wonderful home base for outdoor activity, from surfing and hiking to ATVing on the beach.

One of the best things to do in Mexico is to head underground into its mysterious world of cenotes. Most prevalent on the Yucatan peninsula, Cenotes are large sinkholes in the earth that give entrance to a web of underground rivers and caves carved out of the ancient limestone bedrock. You can find more than 6,000 cenotes in this part of Mexico.

The Mayan people believed that cenotes were the entrance to the underworld, and are still considered to be sacred spots. Many of them are on privately owned land and are protected, but visitors can explore them through organized tours. The gorgeous, crystal-clear pools of water are mesmerizing and can be wonderful places to visit for snorkeling or scuba diving.

Exploring the caves underneath the earth's surface is another popular activity, with centuries-old stalactites and stalagmites that give these cavernous spaces an eerie, other-worldly vibe.

Down from the mountains of Oaxaca City – a 10-hour bus ride, to be exact – the elevation descends rapidly towards the stunning coast of Oaxaca. This stretch of the Pacific is one of the last wild coasts of Mexico. Over the years, it has managed to evade mass development, remaining one of the truest, raw, and wild places to experience undeveloped beaches.

The main town along the Oaxacan coast is Huatulco , a series of nine bays carved out of the coastline. Here is where you will find the majority of hotels and restaurants, as well as a port. As you go farther north, things become much more rugged and remote. You'll pass through the hippie beach havens of Mazunte and Zipolite, before you reach the surf mecca of Puerto Escondido.

Puerto Escondido, or "Puerto" to the locals, is my favorite spot along the entire Oaxacan coastline . Stroll along Playa Zicatela, the main beach in Puerto. This is where the famous Mexican Pipeline crashes just offshore, and is the best place for surfing in all of Mexico . The beach is strewn with lively restaurants, swimwear boutiques, and spots for a fresh juice or acai bowl.

Today Puerto Escondido is seeing a flurry of hotel and restaurant development, and before long it will probably become one of the many Tulums of Mexico, with boutique hotels, trendy restaurants, and shopping. But the spaces in between these hives of activity are where you truly get lost in the craggy, mountainous splendor of the Oaxacan coast.

The beauty of Mexico's Mayan ruins is that many remain tucked away in thick, lush jungle. Coming upon them only helps to set the tone of these "lost" cities. Palenque, located in the jungles of the southern state of Chiapas, is one of the most magical Mayan archaeological sites. And seeing as it's not as easy to get to as Tulum or Chichen Itza, you'll feel like you've stepped into another world when you visit.

The ruins of Palenque date back more than 1,000 years and are thought to be one of the rival cities with other Mayan cities like Calakmul and Tonina. The site is most famous for its Temple of the Inscriptions, a pyramid temple with hieroglyphics that have been integral in helping archaeologists interpret the Mayan language.

A huge portion of the city remains unexplored, the rest shrouded in the surrounding jungle. Still, what has been uncovered is breathtaking to explore.

Flecked off the northeastern corner of the Yucatan peninsula, Isla Holbox is about as close as Mexico gets to its own Caribbean island. The car-free, skinny barrier island is accessed via a very quick ferry ride from the port town of Chiquila.

Once on-island, visitors will find the pace slows way down. Sandy roads run the length of the island, from the small main town all the way to the farther, palm-fringed reaches. This island is all about taking it slow, from the daily yoga activities to the laid-back beach restaurants and boutique hotels.

Barefoot and casual, this island has long been on the backpacker and digital nomad trail. It started to gain serious traction in the last few years, and more brand hotels are taking interest in it. But for now, it still remains one of the best-kept secrets along the Mexican Caribbean.

Mexico has many deep canyons and raging rivers, but none is as beautiful as the La Huasteca Potosina region. The Huasteca region of Mexico is the area home to the Indigenous Huasteca people, and it spans many states. But the region in the state of San Luis Potosi is particularly known for its epic waterfalls.

This hot and humid jungle is simply bursting with tropical flowers that explode from the thick, green foliage. Its veins are coursing with bright blue water, which give way to beautiful ribbons of gushing falls – and swimming holes to go along with them.

Huasteca Potosina is not terribly convenient to get to, but it is particularly appealing to adventure travelers who want to see a side of Mexico that few international travelers get to experience.

Best Time to Visit Mexico: Month by Month Breakdown

Mexico is a vast country and there is a huge range of seasons and climates across the different regions.

The weather can be roughly split into a wet and a dry season, although this mostly counts in the tropical regions south of Mexico City.

The north has a more arid, desert-like climate, while the central regions are at high altitude and enjoy much cooler weather than the rest of Mexico. 

Mexico also has distinct low and high seasons when it comes to tourism, especially in touristy destinations like Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. These generally coincide with the wet and dry seasons too.

Mexico Dry Season 

The dry season is the best time to visit Mexico, and it falls between November and April.

This is peak season, so you can expect things to be busy, especially over Christmas, but Mexico is such a vast country that you can always find a way to escape the crowds.

Here’s our month by month breakdown for Mexico’s dry season. 

Novem b er  in Mexico

November is the start of the dry season, and for travelers, this could be the best time to visit Mexico. 

Prices are still low and tourist numbers are still small compared to what’s going to hit the top destinations in December. This is a good time to visit popular destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta, as you’ll find some great deals on flights and accommodation. 

As the rainy season has only just ended, it’s not the best time for diving yet, but head to Baja California and you’ll catch the start of the Whale Shark season. 

Tropical Yucatan is getting much cooler and a lot less humid, so now is the time to explore the jungles and to visit those lost Mayan Ruins without working up too much of a sweat. 

December in Mexico

Weather-wise, December is easily the best time to visit Mexico. However, everyone else has the same idea too, and December is the worst time to visit Mexico if you’re looking for a quiet vacation away from the crowds! 

In December, especially over Christmas and New Year, the resorts of Cancun and the Maya Riviera are packed out and prices are at their peak. It’s no different in other popular tourist spots either, such as Puerto Vallarta or Baja California. 

The weather is crisp, sunny and dry though, and you’re not likely to have a single rainy day. If you’re not having a beach holiday though, then take a trip to explore the indigenous culture of Oaxaca or Chiapas where you can find beautiful weather. 

January in Mexico

January is just as busy as December, at least for the first two weeks. This is peak season across Mexico, especially in Cancun and along the Pacific Coast.

Travel to Mexico towards the end of January though and you can start to get a few good deals again, as the crowds start to thin out.

Weather-wise this is a great time to explore the south, so enjoy the dry weather along the coast, and visit Mayan archeological sites like Palenque or Chichen Itza.

Mexico City is lovely in January, as are the central highlands, although it can get chilly at night. 

February in Mexico

In February the weather starts to get hotter, especially in the tropical south. Up north and in the mountains it’s still very cool, however. 

You can expect the odd rain shower across the country but for the most part, this is still a beautiful time to travel around Mexico .

You’ll get lower prices in Cancun while the diving and snorkeling off the coast of Cozumel Island is glorious, with sparkling clear water. 

This is the perfect time to visit Baja California, on the Pacific Coast, where you’ll be right in the middle of the whale watching season, and you’ll have the chance to swim with Whale Sharks. 

March in Mexico

March brings a mixed bag when it comes to crowds and the weather. This can be the middle of Spring Break, so it’s a good idea to avoid the big tourist hotspots if this isn’t your scene. If you’re looking to party though, then head straight to Cancun or Tijuana.

Equally, if Easter falls in March then it can be busy everywhere, although this is a great time to soak up the local culture during Semana Santa, the holy week. 

Weatherwise, it can be a little more unpredictable. The south sees more rain while the north is heating up and seeing a few thunderstorms too. 

April in Mexico

Like March, it can be a little unpredictable in April too, so plan your trip in advance to avoid spring break dates or Easter holidays, which can both fall this time of the year. 

April is the last month of the dry season, although you will see the weather starting to turn. The colder winter months are over and summer is on the way, which means that along with the rain it’s getting much hotter, everywhere. 

This is your last chance to see the whales and Whale Sharks in Baja California before they move on for the summer, and it’s the last chance to get really good visibility and diving conditions around Cozumel Island and along the Maya Riviera. 

As the weather heats up, this is a great time to start exploring those high altitude destinations in Central Mexico, such as Guanajuato or San Miguel de Allende, where you can escape the heat. 

Mexico Wet Season

Mexico’s wet season runs from May through to October, however, this varies across the country. The south sees the most rain, and hurricanes can lash the coastlines.

It’s cooler and drier in the north this time of the year, where the climate isn’t tropical. The wet season is not the best time to visit the south of Mexico, but there are still plenty of great deals and places to explore outside of this traditional tourist hotspot. 

May in Mexico

May is officially the start of the wet season, and you can guarantee that it’s going to be hot and it’s probably going to be rainy.

This is a good month for shoulder season travel though because you can avoid the high season crowds in places like Cancun or the Pacific Coast.

It’s fine if you don’t mind a little humidity and have a swimming pool to cool off in because you’ll only get a few hours of rain a day at most.

It’s even better in Baja California, where you can enjoy dry weather for most of May, while temperatures soar into the 30s. Mexico City has cooler weather, and it feels like it’s summer, making the capital a great option in May. 

June in Mexico

June is not the best time to visit Mexico, although you can get some cheap deals on flights and hotels.

The reason it’s cheap though is because it’s the start of hurricane season. While hurricanes are rare, it’s definitely going to rain, although if you don’t mind risking that for a few hours a day it might be worth it 

Instead of going to the coast though, stick to the central highlands, where it’s much cooler and there’s much less rain. 

July in Mexico

July is just as hot and rainy, and while you can get cheap deals at the resorts and great value flights across the country, it’s really not the best time to visit Mexico. 

Hurricanes can hit the Caribbean and Pacific Coast, while everywhere is hot, stuffy and humid. 

You get the best weather in Baja California, but make sure you have a swimming pool where you can cool off.

The other option is to stay at altitude, as you’ll find that while Central Mexico is hot, it’s not quite as hot as the coast – especially at night time.

August in Mexico

In August, it’s still going to be uncomfortably hot across Mexico, although temperatures will start to cool off slightly, especially in the higher altitude areas of the country around Mexico City.

This is still very much hurricane season, so be prepared for this if you’re traveling to Cancun or the Pacific Coast in August.

On the plus side, there are few other vacationers around in August and the prices can be very low, on both flights and hotels! 

September in Mexico

In September, things are starting to look up again when it comes to the weather. This is still the rainy season, but the worst is behind you, and September can be a great time to escape the crowds and score some good deals. 

It’s a good time to be in Mexico City, where the rain is slack anyway and the high altitude means cooler climes.

It’s also Independence day in September, so you can expect plenty of parades and fiestas. 

October in Mexico

In October, it’s the last month of the rainy season and the hurricane season, and actually this can be the best time to visit Mexico.

Rainfall will be minimal, but prices are still low, so head to the beaches and make the most of the deals before the high season crowds arrive in November and December.

As a bonus, the end of October is also when you’ll be able to celebrate Day of the Dead across Mexico.

Best places to visit in February

1.  Adelaide, Australia

There’s never really a bad time to visit South Australia ’s capital—the climate Down Under is generally as agreeable as its inhabitants—but if you can get to Adelaide in February, you’ll experience one of the world’s best fringe festivals. It’s second only to Edinburgh in size and scope, with over 7,000 artists contributing to over 1,000 events spread across hundreds of venues throughout the city. It runs from mid-February to mid-March.

2.  Oaxaca, Mexico

Given Oaxaca is the food capital of Mexico and the metropolitan heart of a state steeped in fascinating indigenous history, it’d be an understatement to say that the city has a lot to offer. February is when temperatures finally start to warm, and the balminess in the air makes for perfect conditions to wander these colour-filled streets. Día de las Candelaria or ‘candlemas’ marks the end of the Mexican Christmas season, so make sure to arrive by February 2, grab some tamales, and get stuck into the celebrations.

3.  Cape Verde

Sprinkled a few hundred kilometres off the west coast of  Africa , Cape Verde is easy to miss. In fact, when explorers in the Middle Ages stumbled across the ten islands, they found not a soul, so it ended up being populated rather than colonised. Now it makes for a spectacular winter sun escape. Once you’ve had your fill of cocktails on the beach, head inland to explore the incredible volcanic landscapes.

4.  Chitwan National Park, Nepal

Sprawling across the south-central region of Nepal, Chitwan National Park doubles as a World Heritage Site and is positively rammed with extraordinary wildlife. The king of this particular jungle is the Bengal tiger, and while you’re far from guaranteed to spot one (there are only 100 or so), it is one of the most likely places in the world you can. Other mammals include leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, rhinos and even the odd elephant or two.

5.  Laos

Laos has a hard time being noticed, with its three neighbours ( Thailand ,  Cambodia  and  Vietnam ) relentlessly clamouring for your attention. But that’s precisely why we love it. Laos is modest, quiet and unassuming—just like the people living there. But once you peek behind the curtain of unaffectedness, you’ll discover a place of almost unimaginable beauty and depth. February is a perfect time to visit what is, in many ways, an ideal country.

6.  Garden Route, South Africa

Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Well, we’re delighted to confirm it is. Especially in February, when the skies are blue and the temperatures balmy. Stretching approximately 300km west to east from Whitsand to Storms River along the southern coastline of  South Africa , the Garden Route makes for one of the world’s best mini-road trips. So named for its incredible biodiversity, the region is packed with perfect beaches, pretty towns, azure lakes and lots and lots of greenery.

7.  Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is lovely, and you should totally visit. Generally speaking, this is a highly walkable city, with its grand, tree-lined avenues—as wide as motorways but without the traffic—but it’s perhaps best known for its ruin bars and thermal baths. The former will make hipsters feel like they’ve died and gone to heaven, and the latter are perfect for the winter months—nothing cleanses the sins of the night before like a dip in the thermal springs. It’s like your head is in a freezer with the rest of your body being in a... well, bath.

8.  Caribbean

Could there be a better ‘up yours’ to February than carting yourself off to the Caribbean? No. The answer is "No." It is the best time to visit: Sea temperatures are at a ludicrously pleasant 26C/79F, and the outside air peaks at a perfectly manageable 29C/84F. As for where to visit specifically, it is hard to go wrong in  Cuba ,  Jamaica ,  St Lucia , Dominica and Antigua. Or, for that matter, the Grenadines,  Aruba , the British Virgin Islands and the  Bahamas .

9.  Myanmar

The door to Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) was firmly shut for several decades due to political strife, but in recent years it’s become very much ajar, and you should snap up the opportunity to slip in and have a look around before the rest of the world cottons on. Unmissable sights include Bagan (an enormous ancient Buddhist complex, best seen from a hot air balloon at sunrise), Mount Popa and Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. Much of Myanmar’s top attractions are outdoors (or at least best viewed from the outside), and February offers the perfect weather for exploring.

10.  Ethiopia

Ethiopia is an absolute wonderland for bucket list enthusiasts, and balmy February temperatures present an ideal time to see what it’s all about and to remind yourself that there’s far more to this country than painful moments in its history. Rosca de Reyes Cake

Besides the presents, one of the main traditions on Dia de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) is eating a rosca de reyes. This is a ring-shaped sweet bread that’s somewhat similar to an Italian Panettone cake.

Inside each ring, there are a few small, plastic figurines in the shape of a child, called a muñeco (little doll).
