You've probably heard "Om," before, believed by some to be the first sound of the universe. What you may not know, however, is that Om is a mantra. Mantras are a powerful tool to use along one's spiritual journey, and there are more than just "om." Here's what to know about mantras , plus 13 great ones to try yourself.

What are mantras?

Traditionally, a mantra is a word or sound repeated to help with concentration during meditation, originally seen in Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

As sound healer and meditation expert Susy Markoe Schieffelin tells mbg, "Mantra means 'mind vehicle.' Mantra is a vehicle in the form of a word or syllable that uses vibration and sound to help us move beyond the thinking mind."

Different mantras have different meanings and effects, and Markoe Schieffelin explains that meditating on a mantra silently, or chanting it out loud, can help bring you into the more peaceful, subconscious mind. "Over time," she adds, "working with mantra can help you to create positive shifts in your mindset and therefore create positive changes in your life."

Mantras can be repeated any time, with mantra meditation being a popular practice for mantra enthusiasts. "I find that for people who believe that they 'can't meditate' or have especially 'busy' minds, chanting a mantra out loud gives the mind something positive to focus on, which can then allow it to slow down and bring a sense of stillness in meditation," Markoe Schieffelin adds.

How to start working with them.

If you're curious to get started using different mantras, according to Markoe Schieffelin, the first thing you'll want to do is choose one that resonates with you. "You could choose an English word such as 'love' or 'peace' and practice repeating it to yourself while sitting quietly in meditation," she says. "Or you could choose a traditional ancient mantra, which can have a stronger vibration since humans have been working with them consciously for thousands of years." 

And as meditation instructor Megan Monahan previously explained to mbg, mantra meditation isn't meant to stop your thoughts, as some people mistakenly believe. Rather, she says, "the goal is to expand your awareness so you can get more comfortable observing your thoughts (and any other external stimuli) without getting immediately involved in them."

Markoe Schieffelin adds that you can, of course, try mantra meditation, but you can also simply chant it out loud whenever you feel called to, or write it down somewhere you'll see it regularly, as a reminder of your intention. You can even repeat your mantra while you're washing your hands or driving in the car.

13 mantras to try:

So Hum , or Soham , is a Sanskrit mantra meaning "I am that," with "that" being the universe. According to Markoe Schieffelin, working with this mantra helps one to identify with the oneness of the universe.

Sa Ta Na Ma

Sa Ta Na Ma , another Sanskrit mantra, can be translated as "birth, life, death, rebirth." Markoe Schieffelin explains it represents the cycles of life, and "chanting this mantra out loud is very balancing for the brain and can help one to move through the changes, seasons, and cycles of life with grace and ease."

Arguably the most popular mantra in world, Om is the sound of the universe and the sound of creation. It's also related to the crown chakra, and higher consciousness. "Om is everything and nothing, and meditating on it can help you to tap into your power as a creator," Markoe Schieffelin tells mbg.

Moving to a few English options, Markoe Schieffelin recommends a simple statement of "I am love" for a mantra that helps you both tap into the love within yourself and the universe at large. By repeating "I am love," you acknowledge your own inner light and remember who you are.

I listen to my feelings

Spiritual author Shannon Kaiser recommends this mantra especially if you often neglect your own emotions and needs. "Your feelings are instincts, and they will always tell you the truth. It may be difficult to face the current reality, but know your feelings are trying to help you process and heal," she previously told mbg. Repeat this mantra when you feel out of touch with yourself to help come back to your feelings.

I am enough

Another mantra suggested by Markoe Scheffielin is a simple "I am enough." How often do we convince ourselves there's something about us that needs to change or be improved before we're whole? Repeat this mantra when you're doubting your wholeness, and know that you are already enough just as you are.

Gratitude is the life force of everything

Finding gratitude during difficulty is a tremendous way to boost your overall sense of contentment. As Kaiser explains, "We can often look outside of ourselves and see someone else who looks happier, more satisfied, or more successful or healthy, and when we focus on them, we can forget to be thankful for what's going well in our own life. Turning your attention to gratitude instead of jealousy or frustration can help you see all of the blessings in your life."

Speaking of gratitude, let's be honest: Sometimes it can be difficult to find, and acceptance is a more realistic place to start. In that case, physician and mystic Lissa Rankin, M.D. , recommends a simple repetition of "I accept." No matter what it is you have to accept, when you're feeling resistance, this mantra can help. "'I accept' is a simple but powerful mantra that has been known to make the body ripe for miracles," Rankin previously wrote for mbg.

Om Mani Padme Hum

Another traditional Sanskrit mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum translates roughly to, "Praise the jewel in the lotus," feng shui expert Anjie Cho previously told mbg. This popular mantra, she says, means that "All the wisdom is within us, so the 'jewel,' the 'treasure,' is in us—and we are the lotus flower ," Cho explains.

Soften into the pain

Rankin explains that we tend to resist difficult emotions and pain, but when life hurts, we ought to soften into it, and repeating this mantra can help with facilitating that. "Grief or heartbreak lasts about 90 seconds, and then you get a reprieve before the next wave hits. You feel it all the way, and it heals and awakens you—you get broken open and your capacity to love expands," she explains.

One day at a time

When we're not living in the present, we can't truly appreciate today for the gift it is, and this mantra reminds us to slow down. "It's easy to get caught up in what we lost or what the state of the world will be in tomorrow, but less easy to keep ourselves in the here and now," Kaiser tells mbg, adding, "The best thing we can do for our mental well being is let go of yesterday and do our best not to dwell on tomorrow. Each day you wake is a new opportunity to do so."

Woooooosaaaaahhhhh

For a mantra that simply allows you to release built-up tension, enter the  woooosaaaaahhhh, which spiritual author Emma Mildon says is the ultimate sound to unleash when you feel yourself losing patience. "This long-winded sigh is for those moments when you're fed up beyond words. Take one of those 'breathe it all in' deep inhalations, and then  woooosaaaaahhhh  it all out," she explains.

Aad Guray Nameh, Jugaad Guray Namay, Sat Guray Nameh, Siri Guru Davay Nameh

And last but certainly not least, Aad Guray Namay (or the Mangala Charan mantra) is my personal favorite mantra that I learned during my yoga teacher training in 2018. It's a mantra for protection that translates to "I bow to the primal wisdom, I bow to the wisdom through the ages, I bow to the true wisdom, I bow to the great divine wisdom." Repeat this mantra whenever you would like a little extra protection.

Mantra Practice: A Matter of Resonance

Mantra is a sound vibration through which we mindfully focus our thoughts, our feelings, and our highest intention. —Girish 

A mantra is a syllable, word, or group of words that has psychological or spiritual power. The earliest mantras go back three thousand years, when they were first used on the Indian subcontinent. The resonance that arises between a sound vibration and our thoughts, feelings, and intentions happens naturally, much like two tuning forks resonating at the same frequency. Today, there are a multitude of phrases readily available throughout the world’s meditative traditions. 

The word mantra is derived from two Sanskrit words— manas , meaning “mind,” and tra, meaning “protect . ” Together they translate to “protection,” and in some cases, “ compassion .” Our original, still mind is always here, but our worries and fears leak all over everything, so our original self goes unnoticed. 

A mantra has the power to protect us from this leaking. And since compassion can be described as wisdom actualized, a mantra also cultivates clarity and wisdom. A mantra, then, is a tool that protects the mind, cultivates clarity and wisdom, and actualizes compassion. 

Although most prominent in Eastern traditions, mantras are also used in other traditions and religions. A popular mantra for Protestant Christians is simply the name Jesus. Catholics commonly repeat the Hail Mary prayer or Ave Maria—my Catholic grandmother used to work her prayer beads continually with the Hail Mary or Ave Maria. Many Jewish practitioners recite Baruch atah Adonai , meaning “Blessed art thou, oh Lord.” 

The very first phrase I used to mindfully focus my thoughts, feelings, and highest intention—knowing almost nothing about Buddhism—was from The Teachings of the Mystics by W. T. Stace. It was Jesus’s simple phrase, “the peace that passeth understanding.” I repeated it, over and over, during a train ride from San Francisco to Salt Lake City. This was before I began a meditation practice or even knew what meditation was. I discovered that if I repeated it continually with heartfelt effort throughout the trip, I became surrounded and permeated by a feeling of deep spaciousness and joy. Once I fell into the groove of it, the sense of spaciousness sustained itself through the remainder of the trip. 

Most of the mantras I have used since then have come from the Buddhist tradition, with one exception. During the three or four years I spent with a Lakota spiritual guide, I followed his advice to repeat Mitakuye Oyasin, which translates to “all my relatives.” Whenever I felt walled off, as if I were somehow excluded from the interbeing nature of all life, I would chant Mitakuye Oyasin . 

Mitakuye Oyasin reflects the Lakota worldview that all beings are interconnected. And time after time, I fell into the same deep spaciousness and joyful sense of interbeing I’d experienced many years before when I first heard it. If you do this yourself, you may find that the joyful stillness you aspire to is closer than you think, closer than your own breath. 

Teacher and author Sally Kempton said that a mantra is “a bit like rubbing a flint against a stone to strike fire.” She goes on to say that it’s the friction between the syllables of the mantra that ignites the fire and, over time, shifts your inner state. 

One way that the fire shifts your inner state is by burning through the turmoil and the incessant mental chatter that can get so stirred up during our meditation. As we come back to our word or phrase again and again, there is the potential to open into a great spaciousness that includes everything and is, at the same time, infused with a deep calm—even in the midst of so much seemingly insurmountable turmoil. 

Yogis have used mantras for hundreds of years to experience the profound sense of calm that mantra practice can bring about, and Western science is finally catching up. Modern brain-imaging techniques have confirmed the benefits of this ancient practice. In one study in 2017, researchers from Linköping University in Sweden measured activity in a region of the brain called the default mode network—the area that’s active when we are remembering, regretting, and rehearsing—to measure the effects of mantra practice. The researchers concluded that mantra practice induced a state of deep relaxation, and furthermore, they found that a regular practice could promote the ability to deal with life’s stresses more skillfully. 

Mantra Practice 

Find a mantra that resonates with you and try to set aside ten to twenty minutes a day to practice. Once you’ve chosen a specific mantra, it’s best to stay with it for some months, giving it a chance to do its work, before considering a switch to another one. 

Begin by sitting in a comfortable position. Repeat the mantra a few times silently, on each inhale and exhale. Don’t try to focus on the mantra too hard; simply allow your body and mind to relax into it. Just like you would in any other type of meditation, when thoughts or feelings enter your mind, simply notice them and then return to silently reciting the word or phrase. 

The most frequently recited mantra in the Zen tradition comes from the Heart Sutra : gate gate paragate parasamgate ( gate is pronounced ga-tay ). It translates to “gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond.” You can repeat one word or the entire series of words . 

When I was having an especially difficult time staying focused during a seven-day retreat, Suzuki Roshi suggested that I make this mantra the focus of my meditation. It was a surprising suggestion because, at that time, Suzuki had never talked about using techniques of any kind, much less mantras. All these years later, I continue to be grateful for this instruction, and I still use it whenever I’m experiencing some difficulty in my meditation. 

Gate gate paragate parasamgate is about going beyond our limiting beliefs, which cloud our ability to see clearly. And going beyond strongly held beliefs requires that we go beyond the three types of poisonous glue that hold these beliefs in place. The first type is greed: we grasp at any shiny object that promises immediate pleasure. The second poisonous glue is hatred: we push away anything that interferes with our getting what we want. And the third is ignorance: our tendency to ignore everything else. 

So far, I have mentioned several mantras from which you may choose. Here are three more that you might find to be useful: 

May I meet this moment fully. May I meet it as a friend. 

In the first sentence you are affirming that an alert and balanced mind, which is not caught by before or after, is a possibility for you. In the second sentence, you are affirming your ability to welcome whatever comes with an open heart. 

Real, but not true 

This mantra affirms that your thoughts and emotions are real— but not necessarily true. When we believe something to be true, we naturally contract around it. If you can relax into this short but insightful mantra, new meanings and possibilities may be revealed. 

Things as it is

This expression originated with Suzuki Roshi and has since become a popular mantra. While grammatically incorrect—which I foolishly pointed out to him once—Suzuki’s odd nomenclature has a unifying effect. It acknowledges conventional reality, which is often referred to in Buddhism as “the 10,000 things”—and then, in the same breath, affirms the no-thingness of ultimate reality. 

Choosing a mantra is not complicated. Just select one that resonates with you, engages you, and burns through your mental chatter. Thich Nhat Hanh suggested “ deep ” on the in-breath and “ peace ” on the out-breath, or “ present moment ” on the in-breath and “ only moment ” on the out-breath. It really can be that simple—and at the same time quite powerful. 

The nineteenth-century poet Alfred Lord Tennyson discovered that he could calm his mind by merely sitting still and repeating his own name. Here’s how he described the experience: “My individuality itself seems to dissolve and fade away into boundless being . . . the loss of personality seeming no extinction, but the one true life.”

I’m sure it’s obvious by now that the specific mantra is not so important. What is important is consistency and engagement. When you catch yourself trying to empower the mantra yourself, just return to the actual practice of pouring your whole body and mind into the mantra and letting go of any thought of gain or loss. Your effort is to simply be present with the mantra—wherever it takes you, there you are, fully present and at one with the mantra, which, within itself, includes all beings.

Tim, Thank you for this teaching about mantras. I have been wondering about mantra practice for years. I practice Zen for many years and recited the Heart Sutra innumerable times. But it was never ever suggested to practice with the mantra offered by Avloketeshvara as the pinnacle of wisdom practice. So ironic. So recently I have been practicing with this mantra and I can report it does have the power to calm the mind.

But what are mantras for meditation? Or better yet, what is a mantra? And how can it be used to augment your spiritual, personal, and yes, even professional development?

You’ve probably heard the word mantra before. But what you might not know is that this is a spiritual practice that is as ancient as it is profound.

What Is a Mantra?

Simply put, a mantra is a word, sound, syllable, or phrase that is repeated over and over again during meditation. It is said to have a powerful vibrational resonance.

They’re used in meditation, yoga, and the spiritual practices of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism.

What is the purpose of a mantra?

Music (including binaural beats ), focusing on the breath, or focusing on an object are other ways of altering your consciousness, but there is something almost mystical about the sound of your own voice repeating a meditation mantra.

What is your personal mantra?

A personal mantra is a statement that motivates and inspires you to be your best self.

With a personal mantra, you affirm the way you want to live your life, as it often represents one’s core values. And it can help motivate you to complete your goals, both personally and professionally.

What Is Mantra Meditation?

Meditation mantras are words or phrases you can sing, chant, hum, or repeat silently in your mind as you meditate. They come in many forms. Some are short, others are long. But they’re all designed to bring you into a state of deeper presence and awareness.

What is the purpose of mantra during meditation?

Mantras are a popular tool in meditation. They serve as an object of focus for the practitioner. Although many people use mantras, you can also use objects like candles , a bowl of water, a picture, or meditation music.

So, how do meditation mantras work ? Why would repeating the same word or phrase over and over help you meditate?

Well, firstly, meditation mantras are designed to give the mind an object to focus on. When you have an object of focus, it becomes easier to steady the mind.

Secondly, ancient mantras have specific sound frequencies and meanings that soothe the senses and facilitate greater mindfulness. That’s why mantras have been used by sages and gurus around the world for many centuries. 

What is a meditation phrase?

Meditation phrases are most commonly known as mantras. Most mantras are phrases. Repeat phrases that you find calming or that energize you. The most famous meditation phrase is most likely “Om Shanti”, meaning “peace”.

Sometimes, a mantra is a single word, like peace , emptiness , or abundance .

What do you say when you meditate?

Picking a mantra depends on your personal beliefs, interests, and, most of all, your goals.

When you select a mantra, you should find something that moves and motivates you. Something that will help you connect to what’s important in life. Something that will keep you calm and focused.

A mantra can be a word or a phrase that calms you and that you can easily chant to yourself, whether alone or with others.

If you want to explore some mantras yourself and you’re wondering, “ What are some good mantras?” Well, ask no more, because below we’ve listed some tried-and-true mantras to help you use meditation for transformation.

Meditation is the solid foundation on which you build your spiritual temple.

But first, let’s cover the types of meditations that you can use mantras with.

What type of meditation uses a mantra?

There are many different types of meditation. But seven of the most prominent are:

  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Transcendental meditation
  • Guided meditation
  • Vipassana meditation
  • Metta meditation
  • Chakra meditation
  • Yoga meditation

A mantra can be incorporated into any form of meditation practice. But traditionally, the two types of meditation that make use of mantras are transcendental and Metta meditations.

Transcendental meditation is a technique in which you sit with your eyes closed and repeat a mantra to yourself twice a day for 20 minutes.

The mantra that you use in transcendental meditation is the one that you choose for yourself and that has a positive effect on you. This can be a word or a phrase, but the mantra itself is entirely up to you. This technique will help you calm down and find inner peace and relaxation.

Metta meditation , or loving-kindness meditation , is one of many meditation mantras in which good wishes are directed toward someone else.

Mantra Meditation Benefits

Meditation can be a transformative practice, and that has been confirmed by science . It is an excellent way to:

  • Open and balance your chakras
  • Concentrate your energy
  • Boost self-knowledge
  • Develop your psychic awareness
  • Help pave the way for emotional healing

Some experienced meditation masters explain that these spiritual phrases, once unlocked, can raise your consciousness.

But using mantras for meditation involves a lot more than just sounding like a broken record. They’re generally sacred in nature—a name or sound that both uplifts you and helps keep you focused during meditation. Or, in other words, they’re designed to change you.

Mantras give your brain something to do. Yes, spiritual mantras are meant to transform you just by uttering them again and again, but there’s a lot to be said for saying  something  just to keep nonsense babble at bay.

And speaking of nonsense babble, rather than just giving you some meaningless drivel like “ my shoes are green ” or “ I love pickled herring ,” (which, for keeping your mind busy during meditation, does have its benefits. But let’s face it, this is “broken record” material and nothing more).

How to Do Mantra Meditation for Beginners (With Examples)

Here’s how to start and stick with your practice:

  • Find a quiet place .
  • Set the intention for your meditation and begin your mantra—out loud or in your head.
  • Simply repeat your mantra slowly and with intention. Remember, it’s not a race. You can say it as many or as few times as you’d like.
  • Think about what your chosen mantra means . Dwell on the individual words.
  • Let it resonate and vibrate with each syllable.

How to practice the loving-kindness mantra meditation

This form of meditation practice is a powerful one. Even if you’ve never tried it before, you’re bound to experience transformative results. Give it a try.

May I be happy. May I be well. May I be safe. May I be peaceful and free from suffering.

To practice the loving-kindness mantra meditation, find a comfortable spot, sit, relax, and after a few deep breaths, repeat these words for a couple of minutes.

After you’ve repeated this phrase for several minutes, picture a loved one in your mind’s eye and repeat the phrase again, but this time using “you” instead of “I.”

As you continue with this meditation, you can start to direct this practice of loving-kindness out into the world. Imagine those who have hurt you or who you have difficult relationships with.

As you direct kindness and love toward them, you can bring greater peace to both yourself and others.

9 ancient meditation mantras to try during your practice

Here is a quick list of nine of the most commonly used simple mantra words and phrases for meditation:

  • “Aum” or “Om”
  • “Ham-Sah” “
  • Aham Prema”
  • “Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti”
  • “Om Tat Sat”
  • “Namo Amitabha”
  • “I am That I Am”
  • “I Love You; I’m Sorry; Please Forgive Me; Thank You”
  • “I Want Nothing. I Do Nothing. I Am Nothing.”

Meditation mantras are a powerful way to increase your mindfulness during meditation. They serve as a focal point for your attention, the same way you might use a candle, a photo, or a statue.

There are quite a few meditation mantras you can access for free. The best part? They act as a form of guided meditation to help you stay grounded and present.

Let’s dive deeper into the nine mantras we mentioned above, outlining their benefits. 

1. “Aum” or “Om”

Said to mean, variously: It Is, Will Be or To Become , The “Om” mantra is considered to be the most sacred mantra (and arguably the most commonly used). Om is a Sanskrit word that is meant to convey the “original vibration of manifestation”—in other words, when intention manifests in the physical realm.

This is one word that pretty much anyone can feel comfortable using, no matter your spiritual inclinations. It is an incredibly soothing sound, especially when you allow the vibration to linger in your throat. You can literally feel your body vibrate when you repeat this mantra for a little while!

It has been said that the true meaning of Om can only be understood by revelation. In other words, you have to say it to understand it. For starters, you can focus on the silence from which Om originates and into which it dissipates. That will quickly give your mind something to focus on and help you enter and stay in meditation!

Many meditation masters suggest that Om helps open your chakras as it simultaneously soothes the mind. You can say it yourself or listen to it as it’s sung or chanted, but this is a mantra best practiced out loud to receive the full benefits.

2. “Ham-Sah”

The Hindu variant, meaning I am THAT. This helps remind us that we are observers and, thus, helps detach from our human experiences and suffering.

3. “Aham Prema”

Meaning: “I am Divine Love.”

4. “Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti”

Meaning: “Peace of mind, body, and speech.”

5. “Om Tat Sat”

Meaning: “All that is.”

6. “Namo Amitabha”

Meaning: Homage to the Buddha of boundless light.

7. “I am That I Am”

This is one of the Hebrew Torah’s most famous lines, and it was God’s answer to Moses when Moses asked for his name.

8. “I Love You; I’m Sorry; Please Forgive Me; Thank You”

This is the ancient Hawaiian mantra practice known as Ho’oponopono. According to the Hawaiian worldview, it means: “ Forgiveness and reconciliation practice, cleansing of “errors of thought”—the origin of problems and sickness in the physical world .”

And it is a real heart-opener. By repeating these words, you open yourself up to clearing the stagnant energy trapped in your body.

These four short phrases are simple but powerful. By asking for forgiveness, you open yourself up to all sorts of transformative healing energy.

9. “I Want Nothing. I Do Nothing. I Am Nothing.”

This mantra was suggested by spiritual leader and Mindvalley teacher, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar . He explains that these three ideas are the golden principles of meditation.

Sri Sri suggests that you meditate on each phrase in turn. Meditate on each phrase for a few minutes, letting your body and mind sink into each.

This liberating meditation mantra can help free you from toxic attachments.

More Examples of Mantras

Now, just because mantras are a 3,000-year-old spiritual practice doesn’t mean they aren’t just as effective today as they were back then!

In fact, mantras have changed over the years to accommodate our modern attitudes and perceptions.

A mantra doesn’t need to be pronounced in Sanskrit to hold power. A mantra just needs to be something that resonates with you on a profound and personal level.

Mantras are often used in meditation as a way to stay focused and centered. But you can use mantras in lots of different ways.

Print one out to put up on your wall. Write one down on the community board at work. Slip a Post-it mantra into your friend’s purse for an added dose of inspiration.

18 popular modern mantra examples in English

  • I am enough.
  • Every day, in every way, I am getting stronger.
  • I am a magnet for health, wealth, and happiness.
  • I love you. I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.
  • In me, I trust.
  • I am open to the possibilities of the Universe.
  • Disconnect to reconnect.
  • I am in an attitude of gratitude.
  • Inhale the future, exhale the past.
  • I am the change.
  • Everything I need is within me.
  • I can and I will.
  • I love myself, I believe in myself, I support myself.

The “love” and “I am” mantras

As you practice some mantras from this list or when you want to create your own mantra meditation, you’ll find that these two words tend to be incorporated into many others.

“Love”

Saying the word “love” while focusing on the feelings of love is a powerful way to create an atmosphere of love. Focus on the physical feeling you get when you say the word, “ Love .” It’s such a great feeling! Even if you’re feeling depressed, angry, or upset, you can literally feel love washing over you when you repeat the word. Feel the love radiating outward from your heart…

This is the most powerful manifesting mantra. Think about it. Whenever you say, “ I am sic k,” how do you feel? Whenever you say, “ I am happy ,” how do you feel? In meditation, you can use “ I am …” alone to honor and acknowledge your existence. And you can take it a step further and honor and acknowledge your divinity and oneness with all that is.

You can also add positive affirmations while you meditate to help paint a mental picture of what you want out of life. For example, “ I am a successful [what you want to be ]” and so on.

It all started with the ancient Hindus, but the use of mantras for meditation has since spread—mostly through the Far East—among Buddhists , Taoists, Sikhs, and others. Today, Western peeps on a spiritual path also create mantras.

Many of them seem more like  affirmations , but the ones that are short and sweet still work nicely for that all-important transformative effect.

3 traditional Buddhist mantras for mindfulness, presence, and power

The very first mantras were used by Hindus in India over 3,000 years ago. Several hundred years later, after Buddhism began to flourish, mantras began to be incorporated into their spiritual practice too.

Buddhist mantras are based on the holy teachings of the Buddha and the bodhisattvas.

Here are three traditional Buddhist mantras you might not have heard of before:

1. “Om Mani Padme Hum”

This one’s from Tibet, and it means, roughly, “Hail the Jewel in the Lotus.” The jewel, in this case, is the Buddha of Compassion. This mantra is used in Tibetan Buddhism.

This is a practice of compassion. It’s used to seek and spread empathy for oneself and others.

2. “Om Muni Muni Mahamuni Shakyamuniye Svaha”

This means, “ I invoke the Universal sound, Buddha-nature, and the wise one, wise one of the Shakyans, hail to thee! ”

Also called the Shakyamuni Mantra , this mantra is meant to encourage the development of what Buddhists call “Buddha-nature,” or the seeking of Enlightenment.

3. “Om Vasudhare Svaha”

Also called the Buddhist money mantra, it’s used as a prayer to the bodhisattva of earth and abundance, Vasundhara . In Buddhism, it’s thought to be the embodiment of the feminine spirit and is the counterpart to the Hindu goddess Lakshmi .

What Is Mantra Healing?

It’s been proven that chanting, music, and mantras have a strong impact on our brains.

In fact, according to Deva Premal and Miten, mantras are energetic sound formulas that slow us down and allow us to see everything clearly. They give us perspective.

Dr. Alfred A. Thomas from the Paris School of Medicine claims that chanting calms the body and activates a number of natural bodily functions and processes. It can also help in healing the mind and body from addictions like smoking or alcohol. What’s more, chanting can strengthen the immune system.

Additionally, Dr. Watkins, a senior lecturer in neuroscience at the Imperial College of London, found that chanting can lower blood pressure, reduce stress levels, increase hormone level performance, and decrease anxiety and depression.

Who would have thought that this simple practice could have such power?

Just remember that in the process of finding a pull and fascination for healing others, you, yourself, can become healed.

Om Shanti meaning in yoga

Om Shanti is perhaps one of the most well-known and accessible mantras used today. If you’ve ever set foot in a yoga class, chances are you’ve heard it.

So, what does Om Shanti mean? Well, there’s actually no direct translation for Om Shanti. That’s because Om isn’t so much a word as it is a sound, a feeling, and an energetic resonance.

Om is said to be the sound of the universe. This single syllable encompasses the cycle of death and rebirth. Chanting the word Om brings you into energetic alignment with the universe.

So, what about Shanti? Well, Shanti is a Sanskrit word that means “peace .” Together, the Om Shanti meaning is meant to convey: Universal Peace.

It’s often used as a greeting in yoga as a way of acknowledging a fellow practitioner and wishing them peace.

Self-affirming mantras help to center and ground us so that we’re pausing, contemplating, and strategizing with mindful awareness, thus fortifying joy and contentment.

The concept of a mantra originates from Buddhist and Hindu traditions. A number of studies suggest that soothing mantras may help ease anxiety and other mental health conditions, such as depression .   • When I’m willing to welcome, accept, and befriend negative and uncomfortable emotions, validate myself, and engage in self-compassion, I commit to making room for growth and expansion.

  • My brain is hardwired to focus on the negative. I can more easily recall memories of my pain than my joy, both cognitively, in my mind, and somatically, in my body. My thinking processes do not need to skew my inner experiences and behavior.
  • My mind is persistent. I cannot necessarily rid myself of the chatter in my mind but rather just lower the volume. The chatter can become a direct portal to my values and a better understanding of what is meaningful and important to me.
  • To increase my flexibility and curiosity, I’ll perpetually ask myself, “How else can I see this?” and “Is my reaction and behavior helping me to lean toward or away from building my confidence and a reflection of who I want to be?”
  • I feel more comfortable with familiarity than the frightening unknown, even if it's painful, distressing, and less than ideal. I’ll acknowledge these feelings rather than react to them from a place of stuckness, stagnation, or fear .
  • Creating space between thinking and doing requires that I pace myself, observe myself, and remain curious about myself. All thoughts and feelings that show up in the process are OK. What matters most is how I choose to react to them. This is inevitably my choice.
  • In my pain, I find my values, and in my values, I find my pain. In other words, if I’m feeling distressed, it’s because a value is being rubbed up against, and if a value is being rubbed up against, I will inevitably feel distressed. My distress assists me in better understanding my needs and what’s truly important to me.
  • I will choose to behave based on who I authentically am and how I want to be, no matter what, irrespective of someone else's behavior.
  • If I commit to perpetual curiosity, openness , and hopefulness, I ask myself, “How will I do better tomorrow, and what will I commit to doing to make that happen?”
  • If I continually stay connected to my values, I’ll remain mindful and grounded and behave based on my best self.
  • Cutting off my negative or uncomfortable feelings inadvertently also impacts my ability to connect with my positive and more comfortable ones. I choose to welcome all feelings and experiences and minimize my judgments of them in order to stay connected, engaged, and in the present moment.

2. Om Mani Padme Hum

This mantra comes from Buddhism and is related to the Bodhisattva of compassion. This is one of the prime mantras that the Buddhist use and is chanted multiple times to invoke the feelings of compassion and loving.

Before chanting the mantra, understand its meaning:

  • Om – The sound vibration of Om dissolves our ego and pride.
  • Mani – Here, the ‘ma’ syllable takes away your jealousy and ‘ni’ dissolves our attachment to desire and passion.
  • Padme – ‘Pad’ syllable removes the judgemental notions of ours and the ‘me’ dissolves our possessive behavior.

4. Tayata Om Bekanze

This mantra is popularly known as the Medicine Buddha mantra as it heals our pain and suffering.  It eliminates the pain of death and rebirth and all our problems of daily life.

5. Om Gum Ganapatayei Namah

The main difference between affirmation and mantras s that a mantra can be sounds and phrases (like Ommmm in yoga & meditation) designed to aid concentration. But affirmations are centered around positive thinking phrases mainly used to build confidence.

How do Mantras Work?

Next time you have feelings of anxiety, try these mantras.

Anxiety is universal. The American Psychological Association defines the feeling as “an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure.” And most people experience it in their lives at one point or another.

It’s so common that many people may view it as just a normal part of life, ignoring it rather than addressing it before it gets worse. But that’s a major problem: If left untreated, anxiety can be crippling. It can lead to lightheadedness, nausea, headaches, stomach pains, panic attacks and more , all of which can make it impossible to carry out even simple tasks.

Luckily, there are several ways to combat overwhelming feelings of anxiety in the moment. Therapy, medication or a combination of the two are vital if anxiety is inhibiting your daily life. And for a quick fix, experts say relaxation techniques like mantras can help.

Using mantras while dealing with anxiety can create a calming effect, said Chantelle Doswell, a licensed counselor and lecturer at Columbia University’s School of Social Work.

“Mantras can be helpful for folks with anxiety in two ways: They can focus the mind, and they can provide counter-narratives to anxiety-provoking automatic thoughts,” Doswell said.

The technique can be so effective that therapists and wellness experts even rely on mantras themselves in addition to recommending them to their patients and clients. HuffPost consulted a few to find out their go-to coping mantras when anxiety pops up.

Use one of these to make it through a tough situation and return to a state of calm the next time your mind gets stuck on anxiety:

1. “I am...”

Try starting a phrase with “I am” and fill it with an adjective of your choosing. Bri Luna, founder and creator of The Hoodwitch and a spiritual wellness expert, said she prefers using the affirmations “I am patience,” “I am compassion,” “I am wisdom,” “I am love,” “I am selfless” and so on.

“I have found that these very short one-line affirmations are ones that will produce the desired [effect] as they are repeated slowly and as a set of three,” she said.

Katiuscia Gray, a licensed clinical social worker based in New York, said she also recommends an “I am” phrase during an anxious period, typically opting for “I am at peace” or something to remind you that you’re not actually in danger.

2. “This too shall pass.”

“Often, when in the throes of anxiety, we feel as if it will last forever and that makes us panic more,” said Diane Sherry Case , a life coach and writing coach who teaches licensed therapists how to incorporate writing into their practice.

That’s why it’s important to remind yourself that this panic-filled moment won’t last forever. Enter this mantra.

“Repeat ‘this too will pass’ in rhythm with your breath,” Case said.

3. “I am powerful and I deserve every power-filled thing.”

Tailor your affirmation based on what you need in the moment. “Depending on the client, I have changed the words: “I am _____, and I deserve every _____ thing,” said Markisha Bennett, a psychologist based in Washington, D.C.

So, for example, it might be “I am beautiful and I deserve every beauty-filled thing,” or “I am strong and I deserve every strength-filled thing.”

4. “It’s not about you.”

This mantra may help in times where you’re anxious over what other people might think about a presentation or something you’re doing, said Joy Harden Bradford, a psychologist based in Atlanta and founder of Therapy for Black Girls .

“Sometimes I get anxious about a new podcast episode or a video I’ll be releasing because I’m worried about what the reception will be. ... Reminding myself that it’s not about me, but more about who needs to hear what I have to say, is incredibly helpful,” Bradford said.

5. “All is well.”

Sometimes you just need a little reminder (that you repeat several times) that things are going to be OK.

“The mantras that I use daily are in Arabic,” said Maryam Hasnaa , who leads workshops and online courses on spirituality and consciousness. “In my tradition, we chant certain words from Scripture. Other than that, the mantra that I say religiously and automatically is ‘all is well.’”

6. “Thank you.”

Case also recommended acknowledging the good things in your life during a moment of anxiety by repeating “thank you.”

“Turning your mind away from your worries and directing it toward gratitude will put you on more solid ground,” she said.

Repeating to yourself to "calm down" while doing deep breathing exercises may be effective when you experience anxiety.

7. “Calm down.”

Telling a person with anxiety to “calm down” is ineffective, but repeating it to yourself with deep breathing exercises may be useful.

“Breathing out to counts of four to C-A-L-M [on the in breath] and D-O-W-N [on the out breath] is my go-to for physical anxiety,” Doswell said.

8. “You are lovable.”

This is especially important if you’re feeling stressed or panicked over a loved one, Doswell said.

“For example, as a person who has anxiety in her close relationships, something that is often helpful to repeat to myself when anxiety starts to build are sayings like ‘you are lovable and/or deserve love’ or ‘this likely isn’t about you ― be patient, be curious,’” she said.

9. “What can I see and experience today that will thrill and amaze me?”

Refocus by thinking about something positive rather than negative.

“I literally will repeat this question to myself several times over and over again,” said Brandi L. Bates , author and host of “Power Podcasts,” which focuses on mindfulness and positivity. “If I’m having an extra-tough day, I get specific: What else can I see? What else can I read, taste, touch, smell and feel today that will thrill and amaze me? What will make this the greatest day of my life?”
