Sightseeing:

Penang (Malay: Pulau Pinang) is an island off the northern part of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also the name of the Malaysian state which is made up of Penang Island and the facing strip of territory on the mainland called Seberang Perai (formerly Province Wellesley).

Penang is one of Malaysia's main tourist draws. Its beaches are a little lackluster when compared with those in some other Malaysian states, but this is more than compensated by the island's rich multicultural history which is full of colonial and Chinese influences. Penang is also well known for being the "food paradise" of Malaysia if not the whole of Asia.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The old town is very walkable .

If getting a taxi, do so INSIDE the terminal as they are 'somewhat' regulated. Taxis are available immediately outside the terminal but will charge twice as much.

Take a funicular railway ride up the Mountain to see the old British Traders gracious homes, and marvel at the coolness, and the views.

Getting around Penang can be a minor hassle, as buses tend to be poorly signposted and infrequent; The free bus and city busses are the same vehicle, one's just a little more crowded Take the #204 to Kek Loc Si for 2RM then continue on to Penang Hill for 1.4RM before returning to Little India or beach for 2RM. The free bus travels throughput CBD but does not go to either site.

By trishaw: These three-wheeled vehicles might be the best idea for a pleasant city tour. One can stop at any point to take photo or buy souvenirs. Negotiate the fare first before get on the trishaw; it is advisable to hire them by the hour for extended sightseeing.

Shopping and food.

Food tasting - Penang is popular among Malaysians for a huge variety of local food such as Char Kwey Teow, Penang Laksa and Nasi Kandar, which are found almost practically everywhere in the Island. However, the best place to go "food hopping" would be Macalister Road. For the most well-known Char Kwey Toew, try "Sister's Chow Koay Teow" at Lorong Selamat.

The three most popular shopping malls in Penang would be Gurney Plaza, Prangin Mall and Queensbay, which houses a full range of fashionable goods and necessity items. If you crave the unusual, head on down to the flea market at Lorong Kulit, which is open from morning until around 2:00pm daily. If mingling with the masses is your idea of fun, check out the pasar malam (night market) along Batu Ferringhi for some inexpensive shopping and dining, gets more interesting during weekends.

The Malaysian currency is the ringgit.

ATMs are widely available in cities, but do stock up on cash if heading out into the smaller islands or the jungle. Credit cards can be used in most shops, restaurants and hotels, although skimming can be a problem in dodgier outlets.

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (5%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill.

Communication:

The sole official language of Malaysia is Malay (Bahasa Malaysia). English is also taught in schools and widely spoken in the cities although in rural areas a little Malay will come in handy.

Broadband Internet is available in most hotels, cafes which offer free WiFi for customers, and some restaurants and cafes. Both cable broadband and wireless broadband (available in hot spots areas such as Starbucks and McDonald's) are available.

Emergency numbers All type of emergency 999; From mobile phone - 999 or 112

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In general shops open from 10.30am till 9.30pm in the large cities. They open and close for business earlier in the smaller towns and rural areas.

Article Contents

1 Gurney Plaza: The Poshest Penang shopping mall

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

Gurney Plaza , facing the seaside at popular Gurney Drive not far away from the lush Penang Botanical Gardens , is big, a nightmare to drive to at weekends, and always, always shiny and filled with Penang’s most well-heeled people — and those who want to look like one. Here you’ll find a great selection of designer brands, expensive clothes, several bookstores (including Times, Popular and MPH ) carrying a lot of English books, Western foods at Cold Storage supermarket (a good place for grocery shopping in Penang ) on the ground floor, complete with a collection of mid-range food outlets and one food court.

There’s a multi-screen cinema on the top floor, and more electronics and consumer goods you can ask for. Gurney also has an indoor children playground, certainly one of the best things to do in Penang with kids . The perk of both shopping malls is the outdoor seating areas filled with franchise restaurant chains, such as Starbucks, Nando’s and others, that see quite a bit of people, especially at weekends. And yes, it’s a regular spot to bring a date out.

2 Gurney Paragon: Futuristic Exclusive Penang Shopping Mall

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

Since Gurney Plaza apparently wasn’t enough, the even more posh, high-class and futuristic Gurney Paragon came to be just a few doors down. The northern side of Gurney Drive now packs more shopping that anyone can muster in Penang.

A few of Gurney Paragon’s most interesting shops are BookXcess, one of Malaysia’s largest and tallest bookstores, packed to the gills with heavily discounted titles; and Daiso, a popular Japanese franchise where you can get high-quality gear of most types at a fraction of the price. For the rest, expect Gurney Paragon to be an expensive affair, especially if you decided to dine in.

3 Prangin Mall: The Less Pretentious Penang shopping mall

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

Prangin Mall , possibly the most central, next to KOMTAR, with its urban theme park and Rainbow Skywalk , and in walking distance to George Town’s tourist enclave Chulia Street. It’s been around for a while. It cracked beyond recognition a few years ago and was restructured and given a nice coat of paint more recently.

It’s five floors of compact low-cost bonanza, and the best place to come find cheap clothes (especially for women), shoes, and also glass frames and lenses — I got myself a new pair for a mere RM150. They have a decent multiplex cinema on the top floor, paired with a game saloon for the youngest, and the usual smorgasbord of food options at a fraction of Gurney Drive ’s prices. The fourth floor has a cluster of good for electronics and computer shops.

4 ICT Digital Mall@KOMTAR: The Technical Penang shopping mall

Next to Prangin Mall and connected via an elevated walkway, ICT Digital Mall @KOMTAR is where one goes for — you guessed it — electronics, computers, smartphones and so on. There are a couple of second-hand stores here where you can buy spare parts or get a cheaper, refurbished computer, cheap laptop and phone covers. Also, it’s the only place I know of in Penang where you can dispose of electronic parts and spent batteries. Not sure about the frequency of collection, but yes, there’s a dedicated bin for that.

5 1st Avenue Penang: The Cold-Hearted Penang shopping mall

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

With a frosty temperature apt to breed penguins and polar bears, 1st Avenue is George Town’s latest, and probably least needed, shopping mall. It sits right across the Digital Mall and across the street from Prangin Mall , connected to both by elevated passageways, and selling more of the same stuff at higher prices. It wins over both for style, for sure, and has great toilets, if you ever need one.

The series of small electronic shops on the second and third floors are good if looking for second-hand MacBooks, and there’s also a convenient Mac Store. The cinema on the top floor is one of George Town’s most expensive, and all the food options don’t come cheaper. All in all, a very well packaged mall that doesn’t add much to the plate, but wins when it comes to chill — I mean, getting yourself out of the sun and into a punishing wall of a/c. Bring a jacket.

6 Queensbay Mall: The Longest Penang shopping mall

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

Queensbay Mall may as well be one of the biggest shopping malls in Malaysia. It takes about 25 minutes to walk from one end to the other, and as you can imagine, it has everything and more. Since it’s not too far from the Universiti Sains Malaysia area, many of its cafes and food outlets are often filled with young international students trying to crack at their books — and failing miserably.

But yes, it’s a good place for a casual stroll, a drink, and some people-watching. Not as posh-oriented as Gurney Drive and Paragon , Queensbay still sports some pretty well-heeled Penang population. I love the Borders bookstore upstairs, the only one where every book and magazine is not shrink-wrapped and can be taken off the shelves to browse at the handy annexed Starbucks cafe’. Again, no wonder students love this place.

7 Bukit Jambul Shopping Complex: The Most Packed Penang shopping mall

Bukit Jambul Complex is a South-of-the-island institution that’s hard to beat. As it serves a portion of Penang island that’s quite a journey from George Town, it tends to be very packed, especially on weekends. This is also a favourite destination for many immigrant workers who live and work in the south of the island.

In terms of posh scale, it is Prangin Mall’s southern equivalent, without space — when it’s packed, it’s a bit cramped, and finding a parking spot in their huge annexed lot can also be a time-consuming affair. Long known to be one of the best for cheap electronic repairs, I believe it’s at par with Prangin Mall and ICT Digital Mall these days. Very good if you like crowds, but besides, pretty handy only if you live on the southern side of the island.

Shopping Malls on Penang Mainland Seberang Perai

Most people shop on Penang island, but there are several important Shopping Malls also on the mainland at Seberang Perai . If you come here, don’t forget to check out our guides to Penang Mainland’s Best Hiking Trails , which include Bukit Juru and the turquoise water pools of Frog Hill. And of course, with all it has to offer in terms of food and attractions, check out our list of the best things to do in Bukit Mertajam and the best hotels in Bukit Mertajam .

8 Design Village Outlet Mall: The Best Deals among all Penang Shopping Malls

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

Set in Penang’s Mainland, Seberang Perai, and just off the second Penang bridge in Batu Kawan (don’t forget the nearby seafood paradise of Bukit Tambun ) Design Village is the place to go get designer brands at cheaper prices. The speciality of this Penang shopping mall is its open-air layout, with shops set along a pedestrian walk dotted with a number of trees. This may be the greenest mall in Malaysia, too. You will find, among others, boutiques by Adidas, Kate Spade, Reebok, Guess, and more. Nearby Aspen Vision City is home to some of Penang street art and will become one of northern Malaysia’s most swanky land developments. The future of Batu Kawan will be
 technologic? We’ll wait and see.

9 IKEA Batu Kawan Penang: The Most International of Penang Shopping Malls

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

The area of Batu Kawan just off Penang second bridge used to be a forgotten coastal wasteland, but it has now become the kingdom of shopping. It was inevitable that even the popular Swedish brand IKEA came to set foot here. This huge IKEA shopping mall is just south of the Design Village Outlet Mall, and sells the type of high-quality European-styled furniture that’s famous (and found) all around the world. It opens from 10 am to 10 pm, and it also has SmĂ„land, an indoor playground where you can let your kids loose as you browse for Nordic deals. And if you fancy trying some Swedish food, there’s a restaurant where you may do so at decent prices.

Opening Hours : Daily from 10am to 10pm

Contact : +603 7952 7575

10 Sunway Carnival Mall: The Grand Dame of Seberang Perai Shopping Malls

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

This is one of Seberang Perai’s most important shopping malls, and it’s in walking distance to the Light, one of Penang’s best 5-star hotels. There’s plenty to shop and browse in these four storeys, from household items at Parkson to a wide variety of groceries at Sam’s Groceria. You may even catch a film at the Golden Screen Cinemas on the top floor. It’s also a popular place for a weekend of shopping in Seberang Perai, when it gets often packed with people from all over the state. Don’t expect anything out of the ordinary from this shopping mall, but it’s a solid choice for both groceries and entertainment for those living in Perai.

Surrounding a world-heritage chapel, this 9-story shopping mall features over 200 brands under its roof, flanked by a luxurious residential complex and executive office tower.

This modern mall appeals especially to the fashion-conscious with trendy local and international fashion outlets!

One of the highlights here is Penang’s first  BookXcess  bookstore on the  7th floor . It’s here that you’ll find the longest (70-meters long) and tallest (2-story high) bookshelf in Malaysia!

However, this shopping mall doesn’t have benches for those who need a break. When we were last there, we noticed that it is less crowded compared to Gurney Plaza.

Exterior Of Straits And Oriental Museum At Gurney Paragon

Straits And Oriental Museum is attached to Gurney Paragon. Here, they have cultural exhibitions like the history of ceramics in Malaysia too. And can also learn about Myanmar, Burmese and other cultures and communities through lectures.

Sometimes there are live art exhibitions (e.g., Ming Art Exhibition) and members of the audience will be able to interact directly with the artists.

Native Penangnites will attest that this mall has lost its luster, with many leading brands have moved out over the years.

Prangin Mall - Shopping Mall Close To Komtar, Penang

Besides that, there’s relatively new competition with 1 st  Avenue Mall that is accessible via a link bridge from Prangin Mall.

Despite all that, Prangin Mall is the place to go for  affordable local-brand apparel  and  electronic gadgets .

Connectivity is excellent too because you can catch a free Rapid Penang CAT bus  opposite Prangin Mall, which goes through different tourist sites in George Town!

Easily-accessible, 1st Avenue Mall links to both Prangin Mall and KOMTAR . International fashion brands, an arcade (K.B. Fun Arcade), and karaoke (Red Box) will keep shoppers busy!

1st Avenue Mall, One Of Many Shopping Malls In Penang

Visitors especially love coming to this  less-crowded mall  to catch a movie and relax.

It hosts a variety of electronic shops on the second and third floor, making it the place to scout for second-hand MacBooks, and computers!

The food court on Level-4 also serves a wide range of food at reasonable prices. Moreover, the opening of a  Village Grocer  here is bound to draw the crowd back.

Just remember to bring a jacket because the air conditioning is freezing!

Komtar In George Town, Penang

Attached to the iconic KOMTAR building and linked to 1 st Avenue and Prangin Mall, you’ll find a dizzying array of the latest electronic gadgets and repair shops.

This mall sells  second-hand options   alongside brand-new gadgets  too, just be sure to shop around to get the best bargain before you make a commitment.

For our personal recommendation, check out the Kao Yek Wholesaler on the first floor where you’ll find a gamut of IT accessories at reasonable prices!

6. Straits Quay Marina Mall

Housing a performing arts centre and a convention centre, Straits Quay is a seaside mall with an elegant façade and many swanky Western and Asian eateries.

Entrance Of Straits Quay Marina Mall In Penang

As a retail marina fronting the sea, the Straits Quay Marina Mall boasts a decent mix of tenants. It is however, the spectacular views that are not to be missed if you’re more of a window shopper anyways.

Main Hall Of Straits Quay Marina Mall In Penang

What we like to do best at Straits Quay Marina Mall is to take a relaxing stroll along the seafront to admire the numerous docked private yachts. This is a popular spot for residents to walk their pampered pooches too.

Or you can dine with a view  at one of the restaurants facing the quay!

Private Yachts At Straits Quay Tanjung Tokong, Penang

If you are a keen shopper, note that there aren’t many big brands here. Although, the selection of  bespoke merchants  should keep you in the mall for a few hours.

Personally, we don’t come here for shopping. But if you’re looking for exquisite souvenirs, can find the famous Malaysian pewter smith brand,  Royal Selangor  at this mall!

  • Sam’s Groceria
  • The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
  • Nyonya Breeze Desire
  • Healy Mac’s Irish Bar & Restaurant

7. Queensbay Mall

Queensbay Mall is a few minutes’ drive away from the Penang Bridge!

During the Christmas season, the  2.5 million sq. ft.  mall never fails to put up an impressive wintry display in their main hall! It’s different every year.

That aside, this shopping paradise plays host to many popular brands across different shopping categories, with the AEON departmental store and dining outlets standing out.

You’re always spoilt for choices at this  five-story mall with its plethora of tenants ( ~400 ) that truly make Queensbay Mall a  one-stop shopping center !

Thus, this is the mall we recommend if you are in the mood for shopping.

8. Design Village Outlet Mall (DVOM)

Design Village Outlet Mall is a premium brand outlet , where you can get your designer brands for a bargain! Most of the shops here are of  mid-range pricing !

Fountain At Design Village Premium Outlet, Open Air Shopping Mall In Penang

The landscaping here is breath-taking with ample open space, outdoor light, and ornamental plants set among relaxing water features.

Beautiful Landscaping At Design Village Premium Outlet In Penang

Even though we were not here for the shops, we did enjoy strolling through this mall. There are outdoor cafes as well as a corner lot for Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. The center court of this mall is very attractive and a good space for weekend markets.

Since there is only one level, this open-air mall is wheelchair–friendly too !

Playground At Design Village Premium Outlet In Penang

We find that there are not many dining options at this mall. The food zone of this mall is mostly empty. The grocery mart, Urban Pantry does have a cafeteria of sorts though.

Note: IKEA at Batu Kawan is only a short distance away from this mall !

  • Padini Outlet

Closest Hotel: The Upper House Hotel

9. Sunway Carnival Mall

As one of the nicer shopping malls within the  town center of Seberang Perai, Sunway Carnival Mall is a crowd -puller over the weekends.

It is conveniently walking distance from The Light Hotel too , one of the top 5-star hotels in Penang .

However, don’t expect super lavish setups or anything fancy. Still, this non-descript 4-story  mall is a  go-to spot  for locals and tourists staying in this area.

And it’s good enough to get your basic shopping done, sample some good food, or watch a movie!

Penang Day Trip Guide: Exploring Georgetown During a Cruise Stopover

penang shopping mall near cruise terminal

Exclusive to TTI readers: From now till 30th September 2018, book a 4-night Port Klang & Phuket Cruise at only S$399*. Applicable sailing dates: Nov 5 , Nov 12 , and Nov 19 . Promo code and other details below!

Penang to me is a nostalgic safe haven where I look forward to rediscovering again and again. Officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, Penang’s capital Georgetown holds more than just history to her lands. The ever-changing scapes of Georgetown prove that there’s always space for creativity and new ideas within the old and static.

A state that celebrates ethnic diversity, Penang’s vibrant colours reflect the multiculturalism of her people that’s not only evident in her streets but also the food. Also, its proximity makes it the perfect short getaway if you do not have much time to spare.

Here, we’ve compiled a list of Must-Sees and Must-Eats of Penang’s Georgetown. If like us, you find yourself in Penang from a short stopover from the cruise, we’ve included our exact itinerary at the end of this post!

Travel Essentials for Penang

Getting around: Georgetown is discoverable by foot, or you can rent a bicycle and explore on two-wheels ! Taking a Grab Car around is cheap too.

Staying connected:   Or the lack thereof. Many cafes in Georgetown has free wifi, so it’s not really necessary to purchase a SIM card for Malaysia. For us, we downloaded Google Maps offline onto our phones (do it before you leave Singapore!) to navigate our way around Georgetown. No problems at all!

Essentials: Bring around ~RM 150 (~S$50) in cash. Also, pack along your shades, sunscreen, and fans (paper fans, portable USB fans, etc.), as the sun and heat in Penang can be unforgiving.

Things to do in Penang

1) visit the old chinese clan entities of penang, i) clan jetties.

The Chew Jetty -

While most of the residents no longer depend on fishing as a livelihood, there are still six clans residing permanently by the waters. Visitors are allowed to explore the clan jetties at any time but do keep in mind to take only pictures and leave only footprints .

ii) Majestic Clan Houses and Mansions

Khoo Kongsi - Penang Food Guide

Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi:  A significant piece of heritage, the Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi (or just “Khoo Kongsi” ) is the largest clan house in Malaysia. Many have also dubbed it the most extravagant clan house in the whole of Southeast Asia with the intricate wood carvings and gilded gold leaves.

Entrance Fee: RM10/pax Address:  18, Cannon Square, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 9AM – 5PM daily

Blue mansion Penang - Penang Day Trip Guide

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (Blue Mansion):  If there’s a colour I could paint my entire house in, it’d be blue. In Fengshui, blue represents water, and water brings growth and wealth. That’s probably what 19th-century Chinese businessman and politician, Cheong Fatt Tze, had in mind when he had his house, the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion , built.

This historical landmark is also a boutique hotel now, and there are guided tours conducted thrice per day for curious visitors. Be ready to feast your eyes on the once-lavish life of Cheong Fatt Tze and his many wives.

art installation Love Lane Penang - Penang Day trip guide

Love Lane:  Besides being a food paradise, Georgetown of Penang is also known to many for her quirky street art and mushrooming hipster cafes. Love Lane is of the most visited lanes of Georgetown where many of the rustic old shophouses have been turned into trendy cafes and cheap backpackers’ hostels.

3) Street Arts in Georgetown

Penang-5D4N Voyager of the Seas Guide

There are a lot of murals (more than 50!) around Georgetown, and some of the more notable ones* are actually located within walking distance of each other. Hunt for some of them at back alleys and forgotten streets while on your way to the next cafe.

If you’re tight on time, you’ll really only need to visit two streets —  Ah Quee Street  and  Lebuh Armenian .

Hidden in a quiet back alley is one of Penang’s oldest confectionery shop — Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay & Canteen , a household name that many go to for childhood delights.

This canteen serves a colourful array of traditional kuehs handmade from scratch, a taste that is hard to find now in today’s world.

2) China House

Cake table at china house - trendy places in Georgetown_

We’ve introduced them to you before, and really don’t mind mentioning them again just because their cakes are dope. Get lost  your creative juices flowing in the  longest cafe in Penang  —  China House .

Cakes and drinks at china house - Penang Cruise Day trip guide

Provided with a cup of loose crayons, patrons are encouraged to draw on the mahjong papers lined on the tables. The best ones get displayed around the cafe! If you think this is just another novelty cafe, you’re wrong. China House’s specialty coffees and the wide selection of cakes are the highlights one must not miss. The signature Tiramisu cake (RM18) got me hooked.

Costs: RM 10.80-20.80/piece Address: 153, Lebuh Pantai, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 9AM – 1AM daily

3) 888 Hokkien Mee

888 Hokkien mee stall - Reasons to go on a cruise

This makan place is slightly out of the way from the heart of Georgetown but is one I’ll gladly travel to just to satisfy my cravings for prawn noodles. It is here where you can get more than what you pay for. A basic bowl of prawn noddles cost RM 4.50 (that’s S$1.50), and every additional item such as eggs and pork ribs cost from RM1-2/pc (S$0.30-0.70).

888 Hokkien mee penang - Reasons to go on a cruise

Located approx. 15 mins’ walk away from China House, 888 Hokkien Mee sees mostly locals who crave for the local Malaysian Chinese taste, a generous bowl of hot savoury prawn noodles. For food we can walk, alternatively, a Grab ride should cost less than RM10 for that distance.

Cost: RM4.50/bowl; add-ons at RM1-2/ea Address:  67-A, Lebuh Presgrave, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia Opening Hours: 5PM – 11:45PM daily

Our Penang Day Trip Itinerary — Ideal for Cruise-goers

4pm: moh teng pheow nyonya koay & canteen.

Moh Teng Pheow Nonya Koay & Canteen

Upon disembarkation, take the free shuttle bus towards the heart of Georgetown (Red Line from Cruise stop marked “10”). We alighted at Leith Street and headed to Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay & Canteen. This old-school confectionary is hidden in a small backstreet, and it takes more than just keen eyes to find it! Though it’s our second time to this place, we’re sure we’ll be back for more!

4:30PM: Exploring Love Lane

Composite pic of TTI at Love Lane Penang - Reasons to go on a cruise

Having a romantic name does come with its perks, like how Love Lane became to be one of the most visited streets of Georgetown. There’s no exact answer to this lane’s alluring name, but one thing we’re sure is that it’s here to stay. While we were there, we couldn’t help but pose in front of the old shophouses’ doors for some OOTD shots. Lovely!

5PM: More sweets at China House

China House Cakes- trendy places in Georgetown_

There’s always room for desserts, so we went all out with desserts when we’re in Penang. After having tasted traditional Chinese kuehs at Moh Teng Pheow, we treated our tastebuds with western delights such as tiramisu and carrot cake.

6PM: Hunting-down Street Arts Around Georgetown

Boy on a bike street art penang - Cruise Penang Day Trip

While we definitely would like to pose with every single mural we saw on the streets of Georgetown, time constraint meant that we only had time to see some of them. We were lucky though, as the area we were at is exactly where the more iconic murals are at.

7PM: Catch the sunset at Clan Jetties of Penang

Lin Jetty penang clan jetty - Reasons to go on a cruise

Getting ourselves back to the vicinity of the port, we realised we still have some time on hand before we needed to embark on the cruise. Chasing that golden glow that’s soon to merge into the horizon, we made our way to one of the clan jetties of Penang — Lim Jetty.

What pulled us to Lim Jetty instead of the more famous Chew Jetty was precisely the void of a crowd. Also, there are many decorative lights and lanterns along the jetty planks.

Lim Jetty is just a 10-min walk away from the Swettenham Pier, but do be there at least an hour before the stipulated boarding time.

1 Day in Penang from Cruise

Hi all, Hi Everyone! Our ship arrives in Penang on January 26 at 8.30am and departs @ 6pm that evening. I am assuming (as I have no info from my agent as yet) that we will need to be back at out ship by 3pm, which doesn't give us much time to check out the scenery. My friend and I love to shop and particularly love a bargain, can anyone please recommend a some 'must go' shopping place for us for hand bags, jewelery, clothing. Also any special places to visit. We also are traveling with our kiddies aged from 5 to 11 years so we'd like to entertain them as well. P.S also does anyone have any ides how far the port that we well be docking in is from the main shopping area?? Thanks so much in advance :-)

Hi [VT member 149cdb], i was in Penang 2 months ago, nice place although VERY quiet for my liking, they have evening markets every night starting at 7.30 pm i think or thereabouts anyways, the place seems to unfortunately go dead quiet after 11pm unfortunately,so all of your shopping will be done at the market ( which is great just get the price and pay a 3rd of the asking price ,pitty you wernt going to KL no thats a shoppers paradise the huge mall outlets are the best places to shop not the night market there , unfortunately i cant remember 1 place that the kids would enjoy:( ,as for the time from the port to Penang its about 40 mins by car/bus there and cost of bus is 1 of their dollars ,god i forget the currency sorry, and by taxi is about 20+ so big differance anyway enjoy your trip Cathy

Hi Cathy, Wonderful thanks so much for your advice. Sadly we won't make the night markets as we leave at 6pm. But, we are going to KL (for 1 day), well arrive in Port Klang, so if you have anyinfo for me on shopping there ad=nd the best spots , I'd love to hear. Thanks again for all your help. :-)

For your short visit, the best advisable plan is just hop is a Trishaw for a Two Hour around the Town and then ask the Trishaw man to drop you at the newly open 1stAvenue, which is also near Penang Komtar and Prangin Mall. The distance from port to the shopping mall is about 4km and a trishaw ride a just about half an hour. After your shopping just get a taxi to the port Rm10.00.

You should not miss out on Georgetown. Very nice town and as mentioned previously the Komtar tower has quite a bit of shopping.

Georgetown is not child friendly narrow streets with uneven paths so forget any strollers. Make sure you take some toilet paper with you and hand cleanser as the local toilets are very dirty even in the shopping centres and you have to have loose change to use the toilets about 20cents malaysian (0.20 ringett. The drinking water is ok but probably more easier to purchase water or soft drink from the many vendors. Penang food is excellent so have some food from one of the many roadside vendors for lunch. The best place to get shoes, etc is in Prangin mall next to Komtar which you cannot miss as its the big round building like a big thumb sticking up in the air. The street vendors selling leather, bags and T shirts etc will try to rip you off so barter hard I have lived in Penang and always barter hard, the going price for tshirts is between 10.00 to 15.00 ringett which is about 5.00 australian dollars Watch the trishaw drivers as they will agree on a price and then try to charge that price per person on arrival, when you agree to a price make sure that price covers all people riding in that trishaw. also barter hard for taxis and do not pay anymore that 10.00 ringett to go from the ferry to komtar as the rapid busses nearby will get you there for around 0.50 cents, they pull up directly underneath Komtar adn Komtar is only 5 minutes away from the ferry terminal. If you can leave the kids behind with someone you know on the ship it would be better as there is not much to do for them in the main shopping area, the kids friendly area is about 1/2 to 3/4 hr by bus to batu ferringhi tourist area each way and even then you cannot swim in the ocean as they have jelly fish stingers and the hotels wont let you use their pools.' Just down the road from the ferry terminal area and only 5 minutes walk is the clan jetteys (google clan jetteys) which is excellent as you can walk out onto the jettys ( the familys that live there do not mind you going out there)it is fantastic to see and feel the heritage of the area and as I said the locals do not mind you going on the narrow jettys and walking past their home in fact its encouraged by the penang tourist board. Overall Georgetown is a heritage area and walking around the back streets is fantastic (especially the back streets near the ferry terminal) as you really get to see how the real penang operates and lives not the tourist bits around Penang road. Have a great day and you will see more without the kids LOL

WOW, I want to thank you all for helping me out with my question. You have all made it so much easier for me. Thanks so much again.

The original area of colonial Georgetown should be within the 1.5 kilometers radius from the port. Star Cruise ship docks at the Swettenham Pier at the north of the Penang port. The smaller Gemini could dock by itself alongside the pier. Whereas the largest Virgo would park itself away from the pier and passengers would be ferried that short distance to the pier by its own lifeboats. As usual customs and immigrations officer would be on duty to facilitate the disembarkation into Penang Island. Star Cruise had tour buses on stand by to ferry visitors to the Prangin Mall for shopping or to the further Kek Loke Si Temple in Ayer Itam for sight seeing. In Penang itself, there are 3 notable shopping Malls. Prangin Mall is in the heart of town between Prangin Road and Magazine Road. Then the further but more popular among the locals, Gurney Mall in Gurney Drive. The last one is out of town at the area of the airport Queensbay Mall. I think the tour bus from Star Cruise would after problems of having kids around. In case you need to move around on your own, it is easy to get taxi from the pier to Prangin Mall and return. Moreover, the Mall would offer genuine and fakes for your choice In the past, the road in front of the pier was Weld Quay, now Pengkalan Weld ran into the area of the Prangin Mall. The distance should be just above one kilometer. Now with the re-alignment of the seafront Expressway, the road Prangin Lane is a turn off from this Express Road. Taxi and rickshaw would fill up the area where the passengers leave the port area. Taxi is not a common commodity in Penang, fare for the short distance may be considered exorbitant. Many taxi operators refuse to adopt the meter system. I have not got an update perhaps this is all changed. I understand that the bus service has now changed for the better, not a bad idea to ask around. It is perfectly in order to use a Rickshaw. This is an antique transport means but now revive as a tourist attraction. It is only for convenience but not necessary cheaper in fare when compared to the taxi.

I am not a shopper but I think most shops in the Prangin Mall open from 10am or from noon on weekdays. So your shopping hours will be limited if you are arriving in Penang early in the morning. Perhaps you can take the trishaw rides, popular with cruise tourists around the UNESCO World Heritage site. The kids will love that. Then start your shopping spree after 9am as some of the individual shops may be open then along Market Street of Little India, Kimberly Street and Penang Road. Remember, Penang is best known for eating street food.

11:00am all shopping centres smaller shops around 10:00am opening but I would mostly bank on 11:00am for shopping.
