GRT Madurai is awesome! Not only is it our favourite hotel in Madurai but it is also one of our favourites across southern India. Every year my family and I do our annual pilgrimage to Madurai and other locations in South India. The one hotel we never change is GRT Madurai because the rooms are great value for money and the staff is the most courteous and helpful you can find.

It is my 2nd time staying with Heritage Madurai. I was very pleased with this place and I do not see any reason to book other hotels in Madurai. This is the best place. I travelled with my Grandma and the staffs were beyond helpful and sweet. We booked the luxury pool villa. It is just that the insects are alot more when you book the pool villa. Just remember to keep the pool door shut after 4pm. Swimming after 4pm is really not recommended. Other than that, this place is PERFECT! I am looking forward to my next stay in March 2019.

It was a really excellent stay at Royal Court, Madurai. The staff and Manager is very good and polite. Breakfast was very good. Room service is fine and good. I always recommends to stay at-least one time in Hotel Royal Court, Madurai if you are planning to visit Madurai. The another best part is its location from Meenakshi Temple and Madurai Railway Station. I wish best for future. 10 point out of 10 point. Good Luck.

most of staff are always smile to you,and ready for help u with everything. Might be the condition here is not like the luxury hotel in the international city, but I like the service they provide for me. Next time come to Madurai,I’ll come to here again. In addition, the breakfast here is quite good, even comparing to the five star hotel all over the world. Thanks for all your surport here.

The hotel was in a quiet street in a pleasant neighbourhood, although quite a way from the centre of the city. On arrival we were given one of the best rooms but had to ask them to change it as there was only one double bed and we needed twin beds as I was travelling with my daughter. The second room was not quite as nice but still more than adequate, being clean and reasonably spacious.

This is a great option for madurai. Three minute walk to the temple. Lots of life right outside the hotel entrance. Our morning chai across the street. Fresh coconuts kitty corner. You can view the action from the rooftop which has laundry lines for drying. Good south india veg breakfast. Plus the room was quiet. Lots of power outages (wecome to india) but they covered this pretty well with their generator.

The hotel was great, we stayed in 5 different hotels before Arasan Sapthagiri, and all were so disappointing with various issues. In Hotel Arasan Sapthagiri, the duvet and mattress was open sponge and lots of dust were coming out. Which was a huge disappointment, however the restaurant, staff and rest of the stay was extremely good. I loved it.

The hotel is centrally located near Minakshi Amman Temple. Walkable distance from Temple. Restaurant and eateries are nearby. The place was good and staff were pleasant. It is an old building but maintained properly. The price is not so good compared to other newly built hotels at better locations available in Madurai itself. Thus, price wise it cannot be recommended. As we were on a medical trip, most of the time we spent outside and thus, preferred a cheaper hotel.

Rooms are small but well decorated. Our room was at the side of the building but still very noisy at night. (Thanks parking attendant with a whistle.) Breakfast was a bit of a disaster. We had to wait over an hour for the good and a further 10 minutes for coffee (they ended up being the wrong order anyway). However, the hotel has only been open for two months and I'm sure these wrinkles will be ironed out with more experience.

Good budget option with a soft mattress. Located out of town, but good bus options to get into the centre. Good price. Staff were lovely and did the best they could with what they had. Had problems with the room (fan not adjustable, shower head missing, powerpoint broken, holes in window screen). Was moved to different room on request, which resolved fan and powerpoint but still had broken window screen and window latch, the room was hot and noisy (being at the front of the hotel it was west facing onto a major road). No English language stations.

Generally our stay with here was not much problem. Some or. most of staffs here are lack of hospitality to treat custmers better. We stayed 2 nights, the next day backed home in the afternoon, room was not clean yet, we asked to do it during our next leave out. But they didn’t it yet, so we ordered to clean and left hotel. After come back they only provided one towel, we are two, So we asked staff to provide two, a staff at the front desk listened us well he only kept calling, we must asked the other staff to explain, That we are two guest,, so on, They brought and handed towel 10 min later without any words. Also they didn’t provide bottled of water for second day. We thought it free charge like other hotels. But he said one bottle of water is free for per booking, We must pay for second day water. only 20 rupees, such a nuisance cost Hence we didn’t feel welcomed from the hotel, This is not a cheapie, no BF inclusive, only good for location.

I recently sent my parents who are in their 60s with 3 of my aunts who are all in their 50s and 60s. As this is is their first time in India on their own, I made specific arrangements for their travel requirements including the hotel that they will be staying. Purpletree Place West Marret was recommended to me by a friend who was there recently for a holiday with his family. He highly recommended the hotel. True enough, all my specific requirements on the groups needs were meticulously carried out. My parents and aunts couldn't stop commending on the spaciousness of the club room and the hospitality they received at the hotel. This is a value for money hotel with fantastic service and facilities. The rooms are spacious and suitable for large families and groups. Highly recommended.

I always liked to stay here whenever I go to Madurai. It's safe, neat and close to attractions that I did not find in many hotels in the same price band. They have a car parking with security. One of the good Veg restaurants in Madurai in few feet away. Wifi wasn't working during the entire stay.

The room was absolutely disgusting. It was the dirtiest place we've been in India. The walls were so damp the plaster was crumbling off, this was on the wall behind the bed, there was no headboard so it was begind the pillows. The bed linen was so thin, dirty and smelly, there were black stains from heads lying on the pillows! The smell on entering the room made me gag. Oh my god just thinking about the place is making me feel sick. The wifi was iffy. The staff were nice and helpful though, well the male staff were, the female couldn't have cared less. The food is nextdoor is really good and cheap. Hotel is less than 10 minute walk to the temples.

The staff were very rude to me on arrival and on departure. I am a female travelling on my own through india and arrived at madurai train station earlier than originally expected. This meant that i got to the hotel t arnd 6am. The staff were very unhappy about this and made it clear to me almost shouting at me for confirmation email and passport. My hotel confirmation was in my emails and the hotel did not have wifi but it was like they did not understand this and kept demanding it even though my booking was in their records and my passport proved my identity. Not a nice experience and i wanted to leave straight away. The day I had to leave they called my room at 6am demanding I check-out. I told them I was still asleep and could i have an hour or so extra as I had not even packed. THis was refused again with the staff member shouting at me....not a nice way to wake up. I really dont see what difference it would make to allow me some time to wake up and pack. The room itself was fine but the sheets were dirty and had holes in. it was nice to have hot water and tv with english channels but the staff need to work on their hospitality skills - very rude and i wish i had never stayed there. It is also quite far away from Madurai city.

This is a rather new hotel that I found with great reviews on Agoda. The location is a little outside of city center, but still around plenty of great food, shopping, and a movie theater. The staff was amazingly helpful, guiding me (with a helpful map) to some great local veg and non veg restaurants and providing other sight seeing recommendations as well. Honestly couldn't ask for a better first stay in India!

Spent three nights here. Location is fantastic on a slightly quieter street, close to major sights, restaurants etc. Rooftop restaurant (only had the delicious breakfast). Balconies with views of street life and the temple. Went on two tours with them, one focusing on sights within and around Madurai; the other going to Kodaikanal. The first was fantastic with a diversity of sights (though no guidance). The second was appalling with very long bus rides and waiting time and only a short time in Kodaikanal - it should be an overnight trip at least.

I was staying in Boopathi 2 nights and have nothing bad to say about this place. Not far from train station, walking distance to Meenakshi Temple, in the middle of typical noisy Indian city full of dust, rikshaws and cars overusing horns. Lots of shops, local restaurants around and stalls with fresh fruits. Rooms and bathroms might be cleaner. There were dirty walls lot of dust on the tv and table as well as trash on the floor near the bed. However I would stay there again if I have to go to Madurai again (hope not, the city is terrible :-))

Good for Business or solo traveler. If you are on family vacation, this is not ideal. They have 5 rooms only but rooms are spacious, have the required facilities. Located next to Periyar Bus stand and Railway Junction the center of the city. Budget Hotel meant for a short stay. Staff could be little more polite and professional in handling customers (The reception guy asked me for proof of booking at the entrance itself without even offering a seat! They also insisted and took 100% tariff while check in itself)

Selected the hotel as primary was fully booked. Booking confirmed breakfast but hotel staff said breakfast not provided. The restaurant functioning as store room. Luckily other restaurants available within short walking distance. Overall cleanliness is just satisfactory. Towel and bed linen need good wash. Solo travellers and back packers will find the place good enough for them. Not recommended for business travellers or couples. Agoda should refund as breakfast not provided as confirmed in booking.

Mr. Anand and his staff are excellent hosts. They provided great restaurant recommendations and had the Best home-cooked breakfast we ate in India. Though the location is a short auto rickshaw from the center, we did not mind as the staff were able to arrange cheap transport to the tourist sites of the city. The comfortable and clean rooms were a better value for money than the hotels located in the center. Would definitely stay here again.

we loved this hotel so much, we changed our travel plans to come back. the colonial era buildings are scattered across a gorgeous hilltop location with astounding views of madurai. mongooses, geckos, and peacocks roam the gardens, and you're surrounded by gardens. the standard rooms are luxurious, the upgraded rooms are astounding. the pool is picturesque, and was never over-run with loud obnoxious ignorant western tourists. the restaurant cuisine is wonderful, with a concentration of local dishes, middle class locals come up here for lunch and dinner. if you're travellers like us, you like the adventure of exploring sri menaakshi temple and the surrounding bazaar, but feel the need to escape back to peace, calm, and clean relaxation, this is the place for you. it's otherwise away from the activity of madurai, well away, rather excluded. the drawbacks are relatively minor, it's relatively expensive, but only relative to local prices, in american or european terms, it's an excellent bargain for the luxury and service. service is not quite the subtle, unobtrusive but attentive tropical british traditional style, but a little too intrusive at times (when it was slow, the waitstaff insisted on carrying my dish from the buffet for me, opening each serving bowl as i approached, a little more annoying than helpful), and their travel arrangements are quite inflated in price (hop on the internet, get the number of a couple of local taxi services, haggle a little for transportation). lunch, when there isn't a buffet, is a great time to order some local dishes. the bar here is one of very few in all of tamil nadu that isn't a shady seedy place only for men. this place would be a very romantic choice for a honeymoon, or even a wedding plus a honeymoon. due to some poor planning, we found that this hotel has the most expensive laundry service in all of southern india. still, it was nicely cleaned and folded.

Reception

Real reviews for hotels

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is impressive. The Tirumalai Nayak Palace is an empty shell and not worth visiting.

Very busy and hectic city with a lot of one- way streets. You can get a shirt etc made to measure in less than a day.

We used Madurai as a break point on a long 24+ hour train journey from Kerala to Chennai. There really is nothing nice I can say about Madurai with the exception of the temples.

Unfortunately the filth infested streets and smell is enough to put most people off. After travelling around India for 2.5 months it's the one location in India that really disappointed.

Madurai is a small and nice city to visit. One of oldest city in india. Sri meenakshi temple is one of greatest temple in india.

Madurai is a big city but the old part, in which the temple is located is quite compact and easy to manage on foot unless you have difficulty walking.

The pavements are dodgy so most people walk in the road. The area round the temple is a traffic free zone so it is quiet and peaceful, apart from the traders homing in on tourists. They do go away though if you are firm and smile - it is not necessary to be rude. Most people visit the city to see the temple but there are other activities, such as bull running

Madurai is only good for Historical monument & the famous temples. And its also a good place to get famous Kanjivaram sarees.

Didnt find good delicious food. Was very crowded & congested. The temperature in Oct was very hot.

The city is full of history and the temples are just awesome and some dates back few thousands of years ago.

"The Lotus City"

Madurai tourism.

Madurai, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities of India. Ruled by Pandya kings for the longest time in its history, it is called as the 'Lotus City' as it was planned and built in the shape of a lotus. Madurai is known for Meenakshi Amman Temple, dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi with a sanctum for her consort, Sundareshwarar.

There are many other ancient temples in Madurai, including Thiruparankundram. It is one of the important old temples dedicated to Lord Muruga(Karthikeya) and is located on a hillock approximately 8 km from the city. Having trade ties with ancient Rome, the place holds a great cultural heritage. With bustling bazaars and fantastic street food, Madurai has heritage walks conducted throughout the day. Madurai is instrumental in promoting Tamil language and preserving the culture.

Tamil Nādu Travel Expo to take place in Madurai from 20-22 September 2024

' src=

Tamil Nadu’s tourism stakeholders have united to launch the Tamil Nadu Travel Expo (TTE) in 2024. This initiative aims to enhance the visibility of Tamil Nadu’s tourism potential and attract more visitors to the state.

Tourism sector plays an important role in providing employment and earning foreign exchange. Tamil Nadu is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The State has a variety of tourist attractions, grand temples, scenic mountains and forests, beautiful beaches, etc. to attract a wide range of tourists. Tamil Nadu is also a premier medical tourism destination of the country and is becoming popular as a wedding destination.

The Tamil Nadu Travel Expo (TTE) is a buyer-seller meet organised by Travel Club, Madurai, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and SIHRA (South India Hotels and Restaurants Association), jointly with support from the Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu, and the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India.

The first edition of TTE scheduled to take place in Madurai from September 20 to 22, 2024. It will take place IDA Scudder Auditorium adjacent to the Grand Madurai by GRT Hotels.

TTE will be hosting 250 potential buyers from India and neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh The TTE will cover all expenses like Lodging and Boarding. These buyers include tour operators, travel agents, and influencers who are interested in promoting Tamil Nadu’s travel and tourism to their clients.

The event will feature 150 to 200 stakeholders/sellers from Tamil Nadu’s Heritage tourism industry, Medical and Wellness tourism and Destination Wedding event planners. The sellers will showcase the Tamil Nādu experiences of the designated themes in stalls and table spaces.

On 22nd September the TTE will be open to public participation to promote the Tamil Nadu tourism themes.

The hosted buyers will gain insights into Tamil Nadu’s tourism experiences, as well as its rich culture, heritage, and cuisine. Knowledge-sharing sessions will be organised, featuring eminent speakers from across the country. Additionally, a gala awards night will recognise outstanding contributions to Tamil Nadu Tourism. Various post-event tours will be arranged for buyers, allowing them to explore Tamil Nadu’s diverse destinations and cultural experiences.

The success of TTE is backed by commitments from hotels, tour operators, transporters, and other tourism experience stakeholders, who are sponsoring accommodation, food, transport, and other services.

T Nataraajan, the Honorary Secretary of SIHRA has been appointed as a Convenor of the event. DMD of GRT Hotels & Resorts shared “The Tourism development in India is crossing new heights after Covid epidemic. The tourism in South India has also improved multi-fold but there is always a feeling that there are still many locations in Tamil Nadu that needs exposure across India and abroad. Tamil Nadu Travel Mart Society (TTMS) was doing yeomen services after a long time hosting Travel Marts in Chennai during 2017 and 2019. After 5 years the need to have a Travel Expo at Madurai was strongly felt by all stakeholders and Travel Club Madurai has taken the initiative along with CII and Hoteliers to make this happening in Madurai during September 2024.I am sure that the overwhelming response from the buyers in India and abroad gives the hoteliers an opportunity to position their hotels / resorts in the market which will go a long way in marketing Tamil Nadu globally.”

G Vasudevan, MD of Fortune Pandiyan Hotel, Madurai has been appointed as the co-convenor.

Vikram Cotah, Chairman of the Tourism Task Force of CII, CEO, GRT Hotels & Resorts adds: “TTE is an endeavour by the industry stakeholders to promote Tamil Nadu Tourism by showcasing relevant themes like Heritage and Spiritual Tourism, Medical and wellness tourism and also to position Tamil Nadu as a Destination wedding option. We are expecting to attract 250 buyers from all over India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and 150 sellers from Tamil Nadu to the TTE event. We expect the B2B marketplace to create opportunities to market Tamil Nadu as a Tourism destination. We are happy to announce that important bodies like CII, SIHRA, Travel Club Madurai, Hoteliers and Travel agents are participating to organise this event in Madurai during September 20/21/22, 2024.

TTE is also endorsed by TTDC, Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Southern Regional office of India Tourism. We hope to make this an annual event in the gateway cities of Tamil Nadu in the years to come”

Raja Graham, President of Travel Club are part of the working committee “We personally invite you to be part of the Tamil Nadu Travel Expo and showcase the best of Tamil Nadu’s tourism to the rest of India and the neighbouring countries.”

In January 2024, the inaugural Jallikattu event took place in this state-of-the-art arena. Jallikattu, as a traditional sport, entails releasing a bull into a crowd of participants who strive to grasp the bull's hump for as long as possible. The primary objective of Jallikattu is to conserve the pure lineage of indigenous bulls. The newly inaugurated Jallikattu arena stands as a testament to the region's profound cultural heritage.
