Lascaux Cave tour from Bordeaux Private driving tour from Bordeaux to Lascaux is an unforgettable experience! We'll visit The Lascaux International center for Parietal art, and the Grotte de Rouffignac. The paintings in these 2 caves are thought to be around 14-26,000 years old!
- Visit the most famous prehistoric painted cavern in the world: Lascaux
- Learn about the history of cave art and what we know about the artists
- Drive through beautiful Dordogne countryside
- Explore the Grotte de Rouffignac and see authentic prehistoric art
- Learn about the history of this region in Southwest France
Description
The most famous of the prehistoric painted caves is called Lascaux, discovered in 1940. Some of the ancient art on the walls and ceiling of this cavern in Lascaux has survived – for over 30,000 years!
The drive to Dordogne and Lascaux takes a little over 2 hours, so its good to get an early start. The original Lascaux cave is no longer open to the public, as It was closed in the 1950’s. Instead you get to visit a fantastic replica. I highly recommend it: visiting the New International Center for Parietal Art in Lascaux is brilliant. But that’s not all! There are a handful of caves in the Dordogne Valley where you can still see real, authentic cave art .
The Lascaux Sightseeing Tour also takes you to visit the Grotte de Rouffignac , “the cave of 100 mammoths”. In this enormous cavern you can see original prehistoric art. You’ll board a small electric train which takes you deep down into the earth. Here you’ll see real, authentic drawings and engravings – unlike in Lascaux where you visit a replica. (The original Lascaux cave is no longer open to the public.)

After lunch, we drive through the beautiful Dordogne region to the Grotte de Rouffignac; where you can board a small electric train to visit this marvelous cave. Here you will see authentic prehistoric cave art (not a replica).

Dordogne – Famous For History and Its Culinary Capital, Sarlat
Thousands of years ago, unknown artists created breathtaking etchings, drawings and paintings on the walls of prehistoric caves of which the most extraordinary examples are found in the Dordogne area. The region is also a Unesco World Heritage Site with its Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley.
The Dordogne region is also famous for its outstanding quality and diversity of food and the culinary capital of the area is without a doubt Sarlat.
Moreover, the region is also home to more than 1000 Castles and Manors that date back to the Hundred Years War as both English and French fought to possess the area. Most of the castles line the Dordogne River and are perfect examples of medieval military architecture.
Depart from Bordeaux and Visit Lascaux IV Museum
Pick up in the morning at your centrally located hotel in Bordeaux and depart for a small group private tour towards the Dordogne Region. In the morning, reach Montignac where the world famous cave of Lascaux IV is located.
Discover brand-new Lascaux IV International Center of Parietal Art. The museum is a triumph of technology: unlike any other cave visits, Lascaux IV employs different set designs, displays, state-of-the-art interactive workshops and immersive technology to bring it to life.
For the very first time, all of Lascaux cave is revealed. This new center features an interactive gallery experience that blends Art, History and Culture with intelligence and sensitivity. At the heart of the experience you will discover a life size, state of the art facsimile cave that reveals the wonders of Lascaux as they were first seen.
In 2018, the museum was listed on Time Magazine’s 100 Greatest Places to visit saying: “The Snohetta-designed complex features some 600 prehistoric paintings and 1,000 engravings, all painstakingly re-created by a team of two dozen artists working from physical castings and advanced 3-D digital scans or the original artwork”!
Here, follow an English guided tour of the cave – a perfect reproduction of the original – and awe at some of the most magical paintings, masterpieces of Paleolithic Art.
Then reach the charming small town of Sarlat
Your full day tour then heads to Sarlat la Canéda. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and is one of the town’s most representative of 14th century France. Located in the heart of the Perigord Noir, the town possesses an outstanding number of buildings and houses dating from the 13th to 18th century.
Highlights of the town include the Lantern of the Dead, Saint Sacerdos Cathedral, Saint Mary church and covered market, the house of La Boétie and so much more. On Wednesdays and Saturdays your guide will also point out all the main specialties that one can find in the Sarlat Market. During your stop in Sarlat, stroll through town for a short walking tour and then enjoy some free time for personal discovery and lunch.
Finally, visit the medieval village of Beynac
Arrive in Beynac to admire the village and the Castle. This Middle Ages construction, with its austere appearance, is perched on top of a limestone cliff, dominating the town and the north bank of the Dordogne River. The castle was built in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac (one of the four baronies of Périgord) to close the valley.
The sheer cliff face being sufficient to discourage any assault from that side, the defenses were built up on the plateau: double crenelated walls, double moats, one of which was a deepened natural ravine, double barbican. This charming village is classified as one of the most beautiful of France as many others in the Dordogne such as La Roque Gageac.

A tour of the Lascaux cave replica
The Lascaux cave located in the commune of Montignac-Lascaux in the Dordogne department in the Vézère valley is one of the most important decorated caves of the Upper Paleolithic by the number and the aesthetic quality of its works. It is sometimes called “the Sistine Chapel of cave art”. It was discovered in 1940 by 4 local teenagers who discovered what they thought was just a hole in the hill of Lascaux, they then decided to enlarge it and came face to face with these paintings made by our Cro-Magnon ancestors.
Today the original cave is closed to the public in order to preserve this site which is listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNSECO. However, in order to allow everyone to admire the masterpieces of prehistory, a reconstruction of the Lascaux site has been made. Get ready to go back in time by diving into the heart of the almost complete replica of the cave thanks to Lascaux IV and its 3D digital tour .

Wining, dining, and cruising in Bordeaux, France
BORDEAUX, France — Chateau Cheval Blanc. Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux. Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The famed Bordeaux region of France is home to some of the most famous wine estates in the world. Those are some of the big names. But it’s a massive region, with more than 7,000 wine-producing estates, offering some of the finest wines on the planet.
It’s been at the top of our travel list for years: a wine-centric journey in Bordeaux, cruising the Left and Right banks, along the Gironde Estuary, the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. We signed up for Amawaterways Taste of Bordeaux specialty wine cruise, a seven-night journey, including Grand Cru Classe’ wine samplings, chateaux and historic cellar visits, vineyard hikes, and an on-board wine expert. We’d read great reviews and liked the fact that we’d be cruising on the AlmaDolce, a small, 140-passenger ship. It had bright rooms, warm woods, French balconies, a sun deck, lounge, fitness area, a main dining room, and The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant. Daily excursions, including biking, hiking, and sightseeing tours, were included, focusing on vineyards and estate visits. Steven Kent Mirassou, owner and winemaker at Steven Kent Winery, a sixth-generation winemaker from Livermore Valley, Calif., was the featured wine expert; he would conduct a variety of tastings and discussions throughout the cruise and host a special wine and food pairing dinner. The price tag for this cruise runs around $4,000.
The journey started and ended in the city of Bordeaux, considered the wine capital of France. The city is a gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage Site and further classified as a French “City of Art and History.” It’s also where the Garonne and Dordogne rivers meet to form the Gironde Estuary, surrounded by hectares of rolling vineyards. And this is where we received our first lesson in oenology. The area east (right) of the Dordogne River is considered the Right Bank, known for its Merlot blends. The area west (left) of the Garonne River is considered the Left Bank and known for its bold Cabernet Sauvignon wines and rich Sauternes. We’d talk (and sample) Left and Right Bank wines for the next seven days.
But first, Bordeaux
Bordeaux, once a gritty shipping center, has been transformed into a hot spot for art and culture, thanks to a recent influx of Parisians (add soundtrack of locals grumbling here), the arrival of a high-speed train network, and the opening of the Cite´ du Vin Museum . We walked the cobblestoned streets and alleyways of the historic center, home to 18th-century Place de la Bourses, the largest city square in Europe; strolled along the Miroir d’Eau, the world’s largest reflecting pool; popped into the bustling indoor Les Halles de Bacalan market, where we sampled local specialties, and visited the Cite´ du Vin Museum, an interactive touch, smell, and taste journey into the world of wine. On the eighth floor of the museum, we took in sweeping views of the Bordeaux region, and then walked back to the ship for our slow cruise up the Dordogne River to the city of Libourne.
Libourne is the gateway to St. Emilion, both a celebrated wine appellation and a historic medieval town. We started the day with a walk in the small village, up and down its cobblestone streets, lined with galleries and wine shops. The village is named after Emilion, a Breton monk who came during the eighth century, seeking a simple life. He lived in a cave and was said to perform miracles. Today, Saint-Emilion Monolithic Church, built into a massive piece of limestone rock during the early 12th century, stands in his honor. We explored the underground caves and catacombs beneath the church and poked in and out of local wine shops selling the world’s most famous Merlot-based wines, before the highlight of the day: a Grand Cru Classe´ wine tasting at Château de Pressac. The medieval castle, set on a hilltop rising above the Dordogne River, was the site of the treaty signing to end the Hundred Years’ War in 1453. Impressive, but we were here for the wines, a lovely sampling of one rosé and three elegant red wines.
We’d spend a little more time on the Right Bank, visiting the town of Blaye and touring the beautifully restored Citadel of Blaye, with ramparts, bastions, passages, towers, Royal gates, and a variety of ancient buildings, including an abbey, chapel, and prison. By late afternoon, we were ready to cruise (and drink) the Left Bank.
The famous Left Bank of Bordeaux, home to the Medoc region, produces some of the most iconic and expensive wines in the world. We drove by and peeked through the gates of famous wine estates, like Chateau Latour, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, and Chateau Lafite Rothschild — a bit disappointed that we weren’t stopping at any of them to tour and taste. But the consolation prize wasn’t bad: a Grand Cru Classé tasting at Chateau Leoville Poyferre, also renowned for producing exceptional wines. We sampled three with chocolates, cheese, and charcuterie on the terrace overlooking miles of rolling vineyards.
“It’s magic,” our guide said as we toured the elegant Chateau Lafourie Peyraguey in the Left Bank’s Graves region on the last day of the cruise. The rambling estate is known for its fine Sauterne wines. We admit that we were newbies when it came to Sauternes; we knew little about them. “The noble rot can only happen under the absolutely right conditions, but it makes gold in a bottle,” our guide explained. She was talking about how Sauterne, a sweet, complex white wine, is added by a fungus called botrytis cinerea (noble rot) that can only grow in very specific conditions: cool, moist, with little or no wind. We sipped the golden nectar from hand-blown crystal glasses and waited while many in the group bought bottles to ship home.
We settled for memories and photos, and returned home with a list of wines that we continue to google, looking for an affordable splurge.
