🚗 Distance from Calgary: 184km / 114 miles (1 hour 52 minutes driving)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a destination that will fill you in on over 6,000 years of Indigenous history and plains culture. The site is located about 15 minutes north of the town of Fort Macleod on Highway #785 and is easily accessible.

The site was once quite literally used as a Buffalo Jump — a steep cliff to which early Indigenous people would herd Buffalo so that they would fall over it, perishing in the process.

Today, the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is one of the best-preserved Buffalo Jumps in the world, and you’ll find sandstone cliffs, an interpretive center, excellent hiking trails, and scenic views of the surrounding area.

Explore the Dinosaur Capital of the World.

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 135km / 84 miles (1 hour 30 minutes driving) | 👉 Guided Drumheller tour from Calgary

Located northeast of Calgary in the dusty Canadian badlands, Drumheller, Alberta is the Dinosaur Capital of the World, is full of dinosaur-related activities, is a national historic site, and is one of my personal favorite day trips from Calgary.

In particular, Drumheller is home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum (a museum that features plenty of real dinosaur bones and skeletons), the world’s largest dinosaur, the Dinosaur Trail, hoodoos, abandoned coal mines, hiking trails, and ghost towns.

Honestly, I’ve visited Drumheller both as a kid as an adult, and I have to say I’ve never left feeling like it wasn’t for me. This town is great for all ages and for all interests!

I spill the beans on how best to experience the town in my 10 best things to do in Drumheller article.

Waterton Lakes National Park

An underrated National Park where the prairies meet the mountains.

Wildflowers bloom in the fields of Waterton Lakes National Park in front of towering mountains

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 259 km / 161 miles (2 hours 39 minutes driving) | 👉 Waterton Lakes National Park Tour From Calgary

Known as where the prairies meet the Canadian Rockies, Waterton Lakes National Park is located in Southern Alberta and is home to pristine lakes, thundering waterfalls, and incredible mountain vistas.

Notably understated in tourist numbers when stacked up against other Alberta parks like Banff and Jasper, Waterton Lakes holds its own when it comes to adventure, beauty, and peaceful relaxation and is one of the top Calgary day trips. In fact, it’s the only park in the world that has a triple designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an International Peace Park, and a Biosphere Reserve.

While here, cozy up in the town of Waterton (or one of the other small towns in the area), hike the trails, explore the wide variety of wildflowers, grab a canoe or kayak, have a spa day, go golfing, or just relax.

Yoho National Park

Just on the other side of Banff, Yoho National Park is just as beautiful but without the crowds.

Taylor at Yoho National Park

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 208km / 129 miles (2 hours 18 minutes driving)

Located on the Western banks of the Canadian Rockies, Yoho National Park in beautiful British Columbia may be less popular than other Rocky Mountain parks, but it still packs a punch when it comes to activities, beauty, and sightseeing.

Easily accessed via the iconic Icefields Parkway (a road consistently rated as one of the world’s best drives), Yoho is a wild oasis known for being the home of mountainous scenery, one of the highest waterfalls in the country, excellent hiking trails, and so much more.

In particular, some of the best sites in Yoho National Park include Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls, Lake O’Hara, the Iceline Trail, Kicking Horse Pass, and Wapta Falls.

Kootenay National Park

A park filled with hot springs, deep canyons, and some of the best hikes in Canada.

A woman stands on a small bridge in Kootenay National Park, in front of mountains and forests

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 167 km / 103.7 miles (1 hour 50 minutes driving)

Established in 1920, Kootenay National Park features 1406 square kilometers of incredible scenery. It was originally designated as part of a government agreement to build a road across the Rocky Mountains.

Since its inception, people have flocked to the “Kootenays” to experience the hot springs, mountain scenery, waterfalls, and deep canyons.

Taking its name for the Kutenai First Nations people of the area, some of the best things to do in Kootenay are to hike the Healy Pass trail, explore Egypt, Boom, and Floe Lakes, check out the Stanley Glacier, soak in the hot springs, take a scenic drive or road trip, hike through Sinclair Canyon, wander to Numa Falls, and hike through the Paint Pots.

Check out Alberta’s third-largest city.

A man stands in front of a coffee shop in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 147 km / 91 miles (1 hour 31 minutes driving)

Alberta’s third-largest city, Red Deer is located smack dab between the bustling cities of Edmonton and Calgary and is the perfect prairie city to explore via day trips from either city.

Featuring a strong ranching culture, Red Deer is home to Heritage Ranch (definitely stop in if you’d like to go horseback riding), the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery, Canyon Ski Resort, Kerry Wood Nature Centre, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, Discovery Canyon Waterpark, and Ellis Bird Farm preserve.

Medicine Hat

Small-town charm, gorgeous coulees, and a ton of history.

An aerial view of downtown Medicine Hat Alberta in the late fall

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 294km / 183 miles (2 hours 55 minutes driving)

Home to roughly 63 000 people, Medicine Hat Alberta makes for one of the best day trips from Calgary if you’re interested in Indigenous history, scenic coulees, and quaint charm.

Fun fact, Medicine Hat is known for being one of the sunniest cities in all of Canada and is a hub on the Canadian badlands.

Some of the best things to do in Medicine Hat include catching a movie at the Monarch Theatre, attending the Medicine Hat Stampede, visiting the Medicine Hat Teepee, and checking out the Medalta Museum.

Another fun fact? I lived in Medicine Hat for an entire year ! I found that it was an awesome place from which to base a ton of day trips, and it’s how I was able to explore so many of the destinations in this article.

Check out my list of the 16 most unique things to do in Medicine Hat, Alberta for more inspiration!

Dinosaur Provincial Park

A hoodoo-filled landscape with Dinosaur bones and epic hikes.

Taylor sits in front of a large valley coulee in Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 219 km / 136 miles (2 hours 14 minutes driving)

Dinosaur Provincial Park is one of my favorite destinations in the Canadian badlands as it’s truly filled with some of the best hoodoo-filled landscapes I’ve seen so far.

At the park, you’ll find a ton of pre-historic educational opportunities, a beautiful canyon, an interpretive centre, dinosaur fossils, and awesome photo opportunities.

A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, most of the dinosaur fossils found here come from the late Cretaceous Period (75 million years ago), and cover over 49 different species.

To spend your time at Dinosaur Provincial Park as best as possible, I recommend hiking a few of the trails (Badlands Trail, Coulee Viewpoint are both great) and taking a ton of photos of the hoodoos.

For more inspiration, check out my Ultimate Guide to Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta .

Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park & Lethbridge

A National Historic Site and a red rock hoodoo wonderland.

Taylor stands amongst red rock hoodoos in Writing on Stone provincial park in Alberta

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 337 km / 209 miles (3 hours 32 minutes driving)

A nature preserve, national historic site, sacred area, and hoodoo-filled wonderland, Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park makes for one of the best day trips from Calgary (even given its slightly longer distance away).

Located near the town of Milk River, Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park is an excellent destination for hiking, camping, photo-taking, and stargazing. While not the most accessible destination on this list (most of the trails are rocky and uneven), you’ll find learning about local Indigenous history and exploring the hoodoos to be absolutely magical. In particular, I recommend hiking the Hoodoo Trail and the Battle Scene Trail and visiting the interpretive center.

Then, when you’ve cased Writing-On-Stone, I recommend you head back the way you came and stop in at the town of Lethbridge.

Home to about 93 000 people, Lethbridge is known for its whiskey-trading history, its gorgeous urban parks system, and the High Level Bridge — one of the longest and tallest railway systems of its type.

For more inspiration, check out my travel guide to Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park .

Jasper National Park

The largest National Park in the Canadian Rockies.

A turquoise lake is surrounded by rich alpine forests and towering mountains in Jasper National Park, Alberta

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 306 km / 190 miles (3 hours 27 minutes driving) | 👉 Athabasca Falls White Water Rafting tour

Located in the majestic Canadian Rockies, Jasper National Park is a wilderness area home to glaciers, subalpine forests, mountains, wildlife (including elk, moose, bighorn sheep, and bears), and turquoise lakes.

Covering over 11,000 square kilometers, Jasper National Park is the largest park in the Canadian Rockies and is a perfect day trip from Calgary for outdoorsy types.

In particular, take a tour onto the Athabasca Glacier (or view it from the Columbia Icefield Skywalk ), drive a section of the Icefields Parkway, explore Maligne Lake and Maligne Canyon, go skiing in the Marmot Basin, view the cascading Sunwapta Falls, hike Mount Edith Cavell, and take the Jasper SkyTram.

Crowsnest Pass

A continental divide that resembles a crowsnest.

Emerald Lake sits among towering mountains in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 229 km / 142 miles (2 hours 40 minutes driving)

Located in the south Canadian Rockies, Crowsnest Pass features five towns — Blairmore, Belleview, Coleman, Hillcrest, and Frank.

Crowsnest Pass and the surrounding area have a rich history of ranching, coal mining, and (unfortunately ) natural and man-made disasters. One of the most unique Calgary day trips, there is a ton to explore in this area from beautiful nature to museums and eclectic sites.

While in Crowsnest pass, I recommend visiting the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre (it tells the story of the national historic site of Canada’s deadliest rockslide), take a tour of the Bellevue Mine, hike to the Noth York Creek Plane Crash (the trail is a 12-km loop), or hike through the more mountainous parts of the region.

Kananaskis & Canmore

An easy day trip from Calgary for outdoorsy types.

Taylor stands among a rushing river and fluffy white snow in Kananaskis Alberta

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 105 km / 65 miles (1 hour 11 minutes driving)

One of the easiest day trips from Calgary, Kananaskis Country is located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies and features a ton of outdoorsy activities and opportunities for relaxing.

Technically comprised of 51 different parks, some of the best things to do in Kananaskis Country include driving the Dorrien/Spray Trail, going to see Elbow Falls, Hiking the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes, hiking the Highwood Pass, and exploring Grotto Creek Canyon.

Then, when you’ve gotten your fill of the Kananaskis nature, I recommend making your way to nearby Canmore.

Home to spas, museums, and a ton of activities for all ages, Canmore is known as being the gateway to Banff National Park. In particular, check out the Canmore Museum, visit Elevation Place, hike to Ha Ling Peak, book yourself in for a spa treatment, view art at the Avens Gallery, and hike around Grassi Lakes.

One of the best ski destinations in the world.

A waterfall streams into a lake in Fernie Alberta during the summer

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 288km / 179 miles (3 hours 11 minutes)

Located in the East Kootenay Region of BC, Fernie makes for a great standalone day trip from Calgary or as an addition to your trip to the Kootenays or Crowsnest Pass.

The largest community in the Elk Valley, Fernie is known for being one of the world’s best destinations for ski and snowboarders, its historic (and scenic) downtown area, having scenic forest trails, and all-around being an adventure-based destination.

In particular, hit the slopes at the Fernie Alpine Resort, hike to Fairy Creek Falls, grab a beer at Fernie Brewing Company, and relax at Maiden Lake.

A ranching and hiking town just down the road from Calgary.

A wooden picturesque chalet is surrounded by snow-covered evergreen trees in Cochrane, Alberta

🚗 Distance from Calgary: 36.5km / 22.7 miles (30 minutes driving)

Located just outside of Calgary, the town of Cochrane is home to roughly 35 000 people and holds firm to its ranching roots.

Featuring one of the cutest downtown areas in the region, this is one of the best Calgary day trips for those who want to explore nature, go shopping, or simply just relax.

While here, tour the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, lean into your outdoorsy side in Big Hill Springs Provincial Park, go hiking or mountain biking in Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, learn about local history at Historic Cochrane Ranche Site, and go shopping in the downtown area.

How to Perfectly Spend One Day in Calgary, Canada (2024)

' src=

As Canada’s fourth largest city, Calgary has all kinds of things to do and places to explore around the beautiful city. Whether you are stopping by on your trans-Canada road trip or passing through on your way to or from Banff National Park, Calgary is worth visiting! Here is everything to know about Calgary and my ideal itinerary for how to spend one day in downtown Calgary! 💡 Quick Note : This post is meant to be a comprehensive guide that answers all questions you might have about visiting Calgary! As such… it’s quite a lengthy post! 😅 I highly recommend using the table of contents below to navigate or clicking here to go directly to the itinerary portion of the post!

What Calgary Is Famous For

As the largest city in Canada’s Alberta Province, Calgary is most famous for hosting the annual 10-day-long event called Stampede . The Calgary Stampede is essentially a festival, exhibition, and rodeo that takes place in July. Think of it as a massive event where Texas meets Canada for 10 days of celebrations, concerts, stage shows, chuckwagon racing, and other competitions. Each year, this event attracts millions of people to the city and is often advertised as, “ The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth .”

A picture of Peace Bridge, which crosses over Bow River. Calgary's downtown skyline is in the background.

Aside from hosting the Stampede, Calgary is also famous for being deemed the most livable city in North America by the Economist Intelligence Unit for the last ten years. This is based on the city’s stability, healthcare, infrastructure, education, culture, and environment. Globally, it’s tied for third with Zurich, Switzerland, and only beaten by Vienna, Austria, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Pretty good if you ask me!

Fun fact: Calgary is home to more than 1.4 million people and is rapidly growing to hopefully become a new tech hub of Canada!

How to Get to Calgary

There are two main ways to get to Calgary: by road or by plane.

If you live in one of the northern US states or fancy a road trip, you can easily drive to Calgary. The trans-Canada highway (Hwy 1) traverses all of Canada if you are coming from a city in Canada like Montreal , Vancouver, or Toronto.

If you live out of driving range or are coming from overseas, Calgary has a local international airport (YYC) . I love this airport because it’s pretty chill and easy to navigate. As a smaller but still decent-sized airport, it’s unlikely that you’ll experience the chaos that you often see at LAX or CDG.

✈️ PRO TIP: Look for the cheapest flights using Skyscanner and StudentUniverse !

A picture of a Westjet airplane about to land at the YYC airport.

Once you arrive at the airport, it’s a short 20-minute drive to the center of downtown Calgary. There’s also a bus ( Route 300 ) that connects from the YYC airport to downtown Calgary. Although traveling by public transportation takes a bit longer (1 hour), it is much cheaper can is a great way to save money. It only costs $11.60 CAD and includes access all day to the public transit buses as well as the C-trains. I highly recommend renting a car , especially if you plan on visiting Banff National Park or Jasper National Park during your stay. You can easily rent a car through Discover Cars , and it’ll be waiting for you at the Calgary airport. Or, you can opt to take a private tour to see Banff for a stress-free day trip! This is good if you’re just quickly passing through the city and want to make the most of your limited time in Banff!

Where to Stay in Calgary

While there are a variety of hotels that may suit your needs, here are the two hotels that I recommend checking out.

Budget Stay

If you are on a tight budget, I recommend the Wicked Hostel in downtown Calgary! This hostel has excellent reviews, has a great location, and is the best option for travelers who are just passing through!

✅ Check rates & availability for the Wicked Hostel

Cheap Hotel Stay

  • Royal Hotel Calgary: A 3-star hotel located right next to the airport with rates of about $100/night. The spacious rooms are clean and comfortable and have wood floors. The staff is very welcoming and your stay includes a complimentary breakfast buffet. This is a fantastic option if you have a flight out early the next morning!

Mid-Range Hotel Stay

  • Sheraton Eau Claire Hotel : A 4-star hotel with a starting rate of ~$175/night. The rooms are very comfortable and have giant windows overlooking Bow River and Prince’s Island Park. Amenities include an indoor pool with a waterslide, bar, restaurant, and fitness center.

Getting Around Calgary

Calgary is a fairly well-connected city that utilizes a grid system and is split up into four quadrants: NE, NW, SE, and SW. To get around town, there are four options: by car, by public transportation, by bike, and by foot.

An obvious choice for getting around is by car, especially if you are interested in activities that aren’t immediately downtown. As I mentioned earlier, a rental car is worth the time and effort if you are planning to go to Banff National Park, Yoho, or Jasper afterward! That being said, there are a few things to note about driving in Calgary.

  • There are lots of one-way streets downtown. When I was driving around, I had to be pretty careful while navigating, and it was confusing at times.
  • Lane reversals often happen. What this means is a lane might be designated for incoming traffic instead of outbound traffic if it’s rush hour or vice versa. This helps mitigate traffic jams and is clearly indicated by traffic stoplights.
  • Limited Free Parking . The third thing to note is that free street parking is limited. Instead, they have lots of parking garages that typically start charging you after 30-60 minutes. This can be inconvenient, but at least you know your car is safe.

A picture of Stephen Avenue, which is closed to vehicle traffic during the day.

By Public Transportation

If you don’t have your license yet or simply don’t want to go through the hassle of getting a car, Calgary has a reliable public transportation network. There are several bus routes and two main light rails (C-train lines) that traverse the city: the red line and the blue line. Since the public transit system is super efficient, clean, relatively timely, and safe, I recommend using it as an alternative to a car. Just input where you want to go into Google Maps and it’ll tell you which station to head towards. Plus, you can easily stay up to date on schedule changes and times with the Calgary Transit website . They often post if there’s any maintenance work being completed that may affect the lines.

🇨🇦 Cost of 24-hour Fare Pass: Adult: $11.60 CAD // Youth (ages 6-17): $8.50 CAD

By Bike or Scooter

Another option for going from place to place in Calgary is by bike. I spent one of my days in Calgary biking all over town. It was fantastic as the city is flat and there are several bike trails in parks right outside of downtown. I felt completely secure and was pleased to get lots of exercise in! If this is something that interests you, you can rent a bike from River Wheels in downtown Calgary. They have a sleek fleet of bikes, and they even fold. Or, you can opt for a lovely guided bike tour if you don’t want to worry about navigation.

A picture of two colorful benches that can be seen on Stephen Avenue Walk.

The most cost-efficient way of getting around the city is by foot. It’s doable to see a good amount of Calgary by foot but your feet might hurt at the end of the day. If anything, it’s a surefire way to hit your 10,000 steps for the day.

🚶‍♀️ If you don’t want to worry about navigating the city, this is a great 2-hour walking tour of Downtown Calgary . It comes highly rated with 4.9 out of 5 stars. ( See reviews here ) .

Not up for walking?

And for anyone who doesn’t want to walk for hours but still wants to see everything the city has to offer, I recommend taking a bus tour. You’ll be able to see all the city’s iconic attractions in both downtown Calgary as well as the surrounding area!

✅ I recommend checking out this awesome 3-hour bus tour if you want to avoid sore feet! ( See reviews here )

Fun Fact: Some of the streets and places in Calgary have a alternate names because many of the first settlers in Alberta were French-Canadians.

One Day in Calgary Itinerary

Now that you know all the basics about Calgary, it’s time to finally see the schedule for the day! This itinerary is made with walking distance in mind, but I also include some activities if you have access to a car!

1. Breakfast Downtown

To get fuel for the rest of the day, I recommend grabbing a fresh breakfast. Check to see if your housing accommodations offer a complimentary breakfast, as this can save you a few extra dollars. If not, or if you simply prefer a bite to eat from a local establishment, I recommend these two spots:

  • OEB Breakfast Co: This popular brunch spot is in the center of downtown Calgary. The menu offers an assortment of tasty dishes typically centered around eggs, but there are other options. My personal favorite part of OEB is the atmosphere and decorations inside that make the experience memorable and fun.
  • ZCrew Cafe: This is a laid-back, trendy little brunch cafe located not too far from the Central Library. The menu includes a wide selection of foods with Asian influences that are always beautifully presented. If this interests you, be sure to make a reservation a day in advance because it does get quite crowded!

If you have a car…

  • Queens Breakfast Cocktails: This little gem is a 10-minute drive outside of downtown Calgary. The menu is a bit on the pricier side but holds true to the saying, “You get what you pay for!” They offer all kinds of hearty meals with delicious flavors, and their presentation never disappoints!

2. Stephen Avenue Walk

A picture of Stephen Avenue Walk in downtown Calgary. This area is filled with small boutiques and is a great place to stroll down.

After you fill up at breakfast, I recommend strolling down Stephen Avenue Walk. As one of the main streets in Calgary, it contains several historic buildings and exudes a bit of that old-world charm. One of the best parts is that the street is closed to traffic from 6 pm – 6 am. Thus, it effectively operates as a pedestrian street during the day, welcoming all locals and tourists alike. I recommend browsing all the local boutiques and admiring the stark contrast in the architecture of the older and new buildings. It’s about a ten-minute walk from both breakfast spots downtown and will help you battle any food coma thoughts!

3. CORE Shopping Centre & Devonian Gardens

A picture of the Devonian Gardens inside the CORE shopping center. Stopping by here is a must stop on your one day tour through Calgary.

Located practically on Stephen Walk Avenue is the CORE Shopping Center . This MASSIVE complex, with 4 levels and about 160 shops, covers three whole city blocks. If you forgot to pack something or simply want to window shop, this is the place to go. They have everything, from high-end luxury stores to cheaper departmental stores, like H&M. Even if you aren’t looking to spend money or do some shopping, check out the Devonian Gardens on the fourth floor. The Devonian Gardens is a 2.5-acre space that serves as a mini botanical garden! It features thousands of beautiful plants, 500+ trees, koi ponds, some fountains, and a kid’s park! There are even little plaques explaining each plant. Seriously, when I saw this, I was speechless and in awe. I’ve never seen a botanical garden in a freaking mall, especially not one of this size. So be sure to check it out!

🚗 Note: If you have a car, there is free evening and weekend parking in the underground lots!

4. Calgary Tower

A picture of the aerial view from one of Calgary's tallest buildings. Here you can see Bow River and how dwarfed the other skyscrapers appear.

8-minutes from Stephen’s Avenue Walk is Calgary Tower. With its bright red color, the Calgary Tower is one of the most recognizable buildings in the entire city. Although it’s no longer the tallest building in all of Calgary, the iconic building and its incredible views of the surrounding city are still spectacular. At the top, you get a 360° aerial view of Calgary from 190.8m (626 ft) above! You can even test your nerves walking across the glass floor observation deck. Hello, fear of heights…long time no see 🥲

The tickets are a bit on the pricier side, but you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the city. To save a bit of money, I recommend purchasing your ticket online . If you wait to buy them in person, it’s a couple of dollars more expensive.

Fun fact: At a height of 310 ft and 9 inches, Calgary is home to the tallest mural in the World ! It was just completed this June 2022 by German artist, Mirko “DAIM” Reisser! This mural is visible from the Calgary Tower.

5. Village Ice Cream

A picture of ice cream from Village Ice Cream. Stopping here is a great way to keep you energized as you walk around Calgary.

After ascending to the top of Calgary Tower, walk another 9 minutes to reach my favorite ice cream stop! I don’t know about you, but ice cream is a must whenever I am traveling! Plus, it’s a financially friendly way of holding you over until it’s dinner time. The Village Ice Cream offers a wide array of unique flavors, such as Earl Grey or Maple Pecan. They also have a rotating list of seasonal flavors and can accommodate any fellow lactose-intolerant people with vegan options!

6. Studio Bell

A picture of the magnificent architecture inside Studio Bell. This is one of the best places to visit in Calgary if you love music and its vibrant history.

Three minutes down the street from Village Ice Cream is the Studio Bell , home of the National Music Centre. You won’t be able to miss the building as it’s huge and connects over a street. Studio Bell is nothing short of heaven for anyone who has a passion for music and its rich history. Filled with various exhibitions, the center showcases thousands of rare instruments and historical music artifacts, including one of Elton John’s pianos. Equally impressive is the striking architecture of the interior, especially the performance hall. If you’re looking for something experiential, check out if any performances coincide with your trip. Also, beware that they’re only open from Thursday to Sunday .

7. Central Library

A picture of the modern exterior of the newly renovated Central Library in downtown Calgary. This was my favorite place to visit and is a must stop!

Only a block away is the newly renovated Central Library , which is without a doubt, a must-visit! One of the first things you’ll notice about the four-story building is its remarkable architecture. The oval shape evokes both a futuristic feeling and a sense that the space is never-ending.

Adding to that, the interior features a large atrium with a skylight that opens the space up with natural light. From there, the contrasting lines of the winding staircases and wooden slats can’t help but catch your eye. Truly, this building is an architectural masterpiece.

With all this space, the library holds approximately 450,000 books, and countless historical artifacts from centuries ago. There are also spaces dedicated to entertainment, conferences, and small meetings. I particularly admired the quiet study rooms and wish I could study there every day.

A picture of the gorgeous interior of the Central Library. Here you can see the skylight at the top sends light flooding throughout the space.

With confidence, I can say that walking through each level, observing the beautiful architecture, and reading the tidbits of information was a highlight of my trip. Even if you aren’t interested in books, this is a fabulous place to rest your feet for a few moments.

Fun Fact: On the fourth floor, you can watch the C-train seemingly emerge from the building as it passes through the tunnel beneath the library.

8. Famous 5 Statue

A picture of two of the Famous 5 statues.

About 10 minutes from the library are the Olympic Plaza and the Famous 5 Statue . Here you will find 5 bronze statues of five Canadian suffragists that make up the Famous 5. These women are famous for fighting for women’s right to be appointed to the Senate. In 1927, they challenged the Supreme Court ruling that determined women were not considered ‘persons’ when referenced in the British North America Act of 1867. After two years in 1929, these women were victorious in what was known as the Person Case. Although it’s a quick stop, it’s worth coming here to see these larger-than-life women. There are also several plaques detailing each woman’s background and contribution to the fight.

9. Wonderland Sculpture

A picture of Kristin posing in front of the Wonderland Sculpture that is located at the entrance to The Bow.

Four minutes from the Famous 5 statue is the unforgettable Wonderland Sculpture . Standing at 12 meters (39.4 ft), the head of a young girl is depicted with bent wire. It symbolizes the brimming hopes, dreams, and energy of the young people in Alberta. There are openings on the side that allow you to walk through the art piece and create a sense of lightness. Again, this is a quick stop, but great for taking pictures. You can also appreciate the size of Calgary’s tallest building, the Bow, which is right behind the Wonderland Sculpture.

10. Chinatown

A picture of the entrance to Silver Dragon Restaurant, one of the most popular restaurants in Calgary's Chinatown.

Located 6 minutes from the Famous 5 statue is Calgary’s historic Chinatown. In terms of size, it’s the largest Chinatown district in Canada and has been standing strong for over 100 years. As you would imagine, this area is filled with amazing Asian food and is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat. I recommend stopping by the Silver Dragon Restaurant for lunch to eat some flavorful Chinese food. Or, if Chinese food doesn’t seem appealing, the area is home to various Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese restaurants. For example, I recommend checking out the Paper Lantern to feast on some authentic Vietnamese food! Afterward, I recommend going inside the Chinese Cultural Centre . It’s the largest center of its kind in North America and features a Chinese Artifacts Museum that illustrates the vibrant history of Chinese settlement in Canada.

11. Crescent Heights Lookout Point

A picture of the view from Crescent Heights Lookout Point. This was my favorite view of the Calgary's downtown skyline.

From Chinatown, walk 15 minutes across Centre St Bridge and up the path immediately to your left to see one of the best vantage points of downtown Calgary. Along the way, you can also admire some pretty fancy residential houses (mansions)! Once at the top, you’ll be greeted with my favorite views of the city skyline. No matter the time of day or season, I swear this view is always breathtaking. Each time I went, there were only a handful of people, and I couldn’t help but smile. So, if you can, try and make time to visit this viewpoint!

12. Prince’s Island Park

A picture of downtown Calgary from Prince's Island Park.

Once you’ve thoroughly enjoyed the view, walk 8 minutes down the staircase and across the Bow River Pathway to reach Prince’s Island Park. This quaint park is a local favorite! Oftentimes, the trails are filled with people running, biking, roller-skating, and scootering. If you prefer to take in the scenery and watch Bow River flow by, sit back and relax on one of the many benches. For me, I loved coming here to smell all the flowers and people-watch. The park is well-maintained and you can’t help but feel happy. There’s even a food truck if you get a little hungry!

13. Peace Bridge

A picture of the famous Peace Bridge lit up at night.

About a 5-minute walk from Prince’s Island Park is the famous Peace Bridge. This pedestrian bridge was built to improve traffic flow for people commuting downtown. One of the first things you may notice is the bridge’s bright red color. This is to pay homage to both the Canadian and Calgary flags. Another thing you may notice is the helical structure. Despite the bridge being named Peace Bridge, locals sometimes call it, “Finger Trap Bridge,” since the helical structure helps the bridge resemble a children’s toy. While this certainly isn’t the most impressive bridge out there, it’s worth a stop if you aren’t too tired. At night, they light the bridge up, and it’s a great time to snap a picture! To get there, simply walk across one of the bridges going towards downtown Calgary and turn right along the Bow River Pathway.

14. Eau Claire Neighborhood

A picture of Bow Tower and Calgary Tower.

As you head back downtown, you’ll pass through the Eau Claire Neighborhood that is directly south of Bow River. In this adorable neighborhood, you’ll find lots of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes. The Eau Claire Market, which is akin to an indoor shopping mall, rests at the heart of the neighborhood.

Whew! Finally, it’s time for dinner after all this hard sightseeing work! 😉 There are three places I recommend for dinner downtown.

  • Palomino Steakhouse ($$) : Specializes in slow-smoked BBQ meats and has a full bar. The inside is well-decorated and gives off a fun rustic vibe. There’s also a little outdoor patio, and they often feature live music!
  • Teatro Ristorante ($$$): Upscale Italian restaurant with a menu filled with unique flavor combinations! The service is great, they are accommodating of any food restrictions you have, and the presentation is excellent. I recommend trying the chef’s tasting menu and making a reservation in advance!
  • Donna Mac ($$$): A bright contemporary restaurant that has a constantly evolving menu that gives fresh takes on typical comfort foods. They use fresh, locally sourced ingredients, so the food has more earthy notes. Definitely worth coming here if you want Canadian cuisine with creative flavor combinations that work well!

Other Places to Visit in Calgary

If you end up spending a few days in Calgary, perhaps due to a flight cancellation and being rebooked 5 days later (that was me), here are some other places to visit in Calgary!

  • Heritage Park Historical Village : Canada’s largest living history museum! There are tons of exhibitions and attractions that make it the perfect activity. You can reserve your ticket here .
  • Glenmore Park: Massive park that encompasses the Glenmore Reservoir. Throughout the park, there are lengthy trails, perfect for biking, hiking, or running. I spent two days biking around the park and loved every second!
  • Inglewood Bird Sanctuary & Nature Centre: This lovely enclosed nature space is ideal for observing wildlife and bird-watching. There are also several winding trails along the ponds that make for a relaxing afternoon walk.

A picture of downtown Calgary and its imposing skyline from the top of Nose Hill Park.

  • Nose Hill Park: One of the largest urban parks in North America. Since it’s perched on a giant hill above the city, you get sweeping views of the city skyline. The trails are mostly flat after the initial hill from the parking lot, and it’s simply one of the calming places to walk around.
  • Canada Olympic Park: Previously one of the venues for the 1968 Winter Olympic Games, the Olympic Park is now open to the general public for various sporting activities. During the winter, people from the city flock here to go skiing and snowboarding and avoid driving to the mountains. Meanwhile, in the summertime, the park is a hotspot for mountain biking and zip lining.

Things to Do Near Calgary

If you feel like you have seen all that you want to and have both the time and means, consider taking a day trip.

Visit Banff National Park

A picture of Kristin at Moraine Lake in Banff National Park.

About 1.5 hours away from Calgary is Canada’s greatest tourist attraction, Banff National Park. As a result of the city’s nearby proximity, Calgary is essentially the gateway to Banff. And if Banff isn’t already on your list to stop by, definitely consider it! There are so many things to do and see. Even if you aren’t a wilderness person, I guarantee there is something in Banff for everyone!

🥾 Feel free to check out my easy 4-day travel guide to Banff if you are looking for inspiration or help planning!

Day Trip to Royal Tyrell Museum

A picture of one of the dinosaurs that can be found at Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology..

Another option within reasonable driving distance is the Royal Tyrell Museum . It’s located about an hour and 45 minutes away from Calgary in the city of Drumheller. This museum and research facility is positively ginormous and fully dedicated to paleontology and studying ancient life. It holds the largest collection of fossils in all of Canada and features about 800 of them at a time throughout the museum. Truly, the amount of detail and information the museum has is nothing short of spectacular. I mean some of the dinosaur displays are so convincing that you almost feel like you stepped into Jurassic Park. Thus, if you have the slightest remote interest in dinosaurs, this is the place to go!

✅ If you don’t want to worry about navigation or don’t have a car, you can take a private guided day tour to Drumheller . It’s definitely on the expensive side but the museum and surrounding area are pretty incredible (at least I thought so!)

Visiting Calgary: FAQs

Originally, I was supposed to spend a week exploring Calgary. However, WestJet canceled my flight 4 hours before departure and rescheduled me for a flight 5 days later. While this made my trip nearly two weeks, it allowed me to see all the city’s lovely hidden gems. Based on my time, I’d argue that one day is enough to see the main highlights. It’s not like Paris or Zagreb , where it’s simply impossible to see all the best spots in 24 hours. However, if you can, I highly recommend staying in Calgary for 3-5 days so you can truly experience this lively city.

Much like San Diego , Residents of Calgary bask in an average of 333 days of sunshine per year, more than any other Canadian city. Despite this, the weather is quite fickle. Your best chances of having fairly stable weather are June-September. These summer months are great for wandering through the small shops downtown or embarking on a little hike. That said, don’t be surprised if there’s rain or a thunderstorm during your visit. When I visited in June, nearly every day had a 40 – 60% chance of rain. At first, I was disappointed because I thought I wouldn’t get to do a lot of the outdoor activities I had planned. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a 40% – 60% chance of rain translates to light rain for maybe an hour or two and sun the rest of the day! Of course, if you’re interested in participating in winter activities, go during their winter season (November to March). Just beware that the days are extremely cold, sometimes -19° F, and very short in terms of the amount of sunlight.

Wrap-Up: One Perfect Day in Calgary

Calgary is a beautiful and almost underrated city with so many wonderful places to explore. There is truly something for everyone, and it’s worth spending at least a day wandering around. More if you can afford it though 😉 Either way, I hope this overly detailed post has been helpful and I wish you a fantastic time. Oh, and in case you’re head is spinning from all the information…

You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

About Wait Times

* Calendar days refers to every day of the week, including days when embassies are closed (such as weekends and holidays).

* Wait times are generally the MAXIMUM amount of time you will have to wait to get an appointment.  Appointments are continuously being added and you will likely be given an opportunity to move your appointment up as new appointments are opened.

† Work days refers only to days when the embassy is open and does not include weekends and holidays.

‡ A, G, and NATO applications are excluded from these wait times, as they are processed separately.

Getting Around Calgary

I recommend walking and/or taking transit to see the Calgary tourist attractions. Calgary is a walkable city, and enjoyable if you have nice weather!

I spent a full day walking around Calgary in -2˚C weather (28.4°F) , and had a pleasant time walking in and out of shops and restaurants. I am from Toronto, so I can handle a little cold, haha.

Don’t let the colder weather freak you out.. just ensure you dress appropriately!

However, if you are using Calgary as a stepping stone to Banff or further on for a trip to Jasper , a rental car is a great choice to pick up whilst in Calgary, as there are many more options and cars available.

DAY 1: Full Day in Calgary

1. breakfast: cafe or restaurant.

Start your day with some delicious coffee, or don’t, but I don’t know how to live without it, so here are my recommendations for breakfast.

I have a detailed list on the best places to eat in Calgary , you don’t want to miss it.

 CafĂŠs/Restaurants:

  • Deville Coffee ($$): So many locations in Calgary to choose from.
  • Monogram Coffee ($$-$$$): 4 locations in Calgary!
  • Kawa Espresso Bar ($$): 1333 8 St. SW.
  • Alforno Cafe & Bakery ($$): 222 7 St. SW (very close to Peace Bridge).
  • OEB Breakfast Co. ($$): 4 locations in Calgary!

Head out for the morning!

2. The Bow & The Wonderland Sculpture

Wonderland Sculpture, Calgary

While making your way over to Prince’s Island Park, I highly recommend passing by the mesmerizing Wonderland Sculpture .

It is located in front of The Bow , which is a gorgeous skyscraper in Calgary.

You can walk into the sculpture itself from the side (I didn’t even realize this while I was standing there, go there for me and report back lol).

3. Prince’s Island Park

Prince's Island Park, Calgary

With a full stomach of breakfast and caffeine head over to beautiful Prince’s Island Park .

In the warmer months, the greenery and walking paths are beautiful. The winter months, (usually snowy), travellers and locals can enjoy skating on the lagoon.

Spend however little or long you would like in the park!

4. Peace Bridge

Peace Bridge, Prince's Island Park, Calgary

Close by to Prince’s Island Park is the aesthetically pleasing Peace Bridge . It is also a pedestrian bridge so you can use it to cross the Bow River.

It adds a cool modern flair to the park around it.

5. CafĂŠ Break

Alforno Bakery and Cafe, Clagary

Head to a coffee shop for a break from the cold and to relax from the steps you’ve taken!

Alforno Cafe & Bakery is close to the Peace Bridge.

Sit down and enjoy a coffee & pastry inside or take something to go!

6. Shopping on 17th Ave SW

Head over to 17th Ave SW for some shopping!

There are MANY shops on this street to enjoy. They also have tons of restaurants to check out while you are there.

My top three shops I visited were:

Reid’s Stationers

  • This store is so FUN . It has everything you can think of; games, socks, mugs, candles, stationary, gift ideas, embroidery kits, I can keep going.
  • Go check it out for yourself. I had so much fun in there!
  • I bought my white elephant Christmas gift in there last year.

Beyond Scarf

  • Beyond Scarf sells high quality scarves, purses/wallets from Italian designers and gorgeous jewelry and accessories.
  • This store was super chic, although I did not purchase anything, I would definitely return and hope to buy something next time!
  • The most stunning jewelry store. I was shopping around in early November and it was beautifully decorated for the Christmas season.

Rubaiyat, Calgary

It gave me such a happy feeling stepping into this store. The items were on the expensive side, and I could not afford most things, but I would definitely return!

I am sure you’ve worked up quite an appetite by now! It is time for some lunch. Below are some recommendations that I have enjoyed. Be sure to check out my Calgary food blog as well!

  • Ten Foot Henry ($$-$$$): 1209 1 St. SW. One of the best restaurants I have eaten at. HONESTLY, so delicious.
  • The Wednesday Room ($$$): 118 8 Ave SW #100. Another delicious spot!
  • Murrieta’s West Coast Bar & Grill ($$$): 808 1 St. SW #200. Seafood, steak & pastas!
  • National on 10th ($$): 341 10th Ave SW. They have 4 locations. The one on 10th also has a bowling alley. It is a great spot for beer lovers & pub food. I recommend the crispy chicken sandwich.

8. Go up the Calgary Tower

Check out the Calgary Tower at 101 9 Ave SW, which was built as a celebration for Canada’s 100th Birthday! HBD Canada lol.

The glass floor is super cool and a little scary if I am being honest.

Make SURE to purchase tickets ahead of time , they charge more if you purchase on site!

Calgary Tower is easily one of the most popular things to do in Calgary Canada.

Look… I am from Toronto , and have been up to the CN Tower a total of one time in my life because my Slovenian relatives came to visit, otherwise I would never go.. So, you may be like, Joanna?? What are you doing going up this tower that is not even as tall as the CN Tower if you know it’s a tourist hot spot???? Well, when I travel, I love the smaller lesser known areas, and I secretly also love the major tourist hot spots. So…. bye.

views from calgary tower, a must for one day in calgary

Buy tickets online here , (cheaper online), or walk-in tickets.

You can dine inside the Calgary Tower as well.

There are two restaurants. Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse , on the second floor of the building and Sky 360 Restaurant & Lounge .

If you make reservations at Sky 360 you can go up the Calgary Tower for free . This restaurant is revolving and moves once an hour.

9. Stephen Avenue Walk

Majority of my time was spent on Stephen Avenue Walk , as it was right next to the Hyatt Regency . I went to many of the bars, restaurants and shops on this street.

You will get lost (not literally, it’s one street), spending time here. As you can see, I went from daylight to night on this street.

This area was one of my favourite in downtown Calgary and it has such a fun vibe. I loved the Christmas decorations lighting up the street, it was so festive & sweet.

Stephen Ave Walk, Calgary

10. Dinner & Drinks

You have many options for dining in Calgary. It is home to MANY restaurants that belong on Canada’s 100 Best list . Here are my recommendations:

  • Shokunin ($$-$$$): 2016 4 St. SW. This Japanese restaurant was probably one of the greatest culinary experiences of my life.
  • Bar Annabelle and/or Annabelle’s Kitchen ($$): 109a 8 Ave. SW. I visited the bar, if you are interested, they also have an Italian restaurant next door!
  • Ship & Anchor Pub ($): 534 17 Ave SW. Visited this bar on a Friday night and it was bumpin’!! Super busy, cheap drinks, good pub food (when you need it). It was a great time.
  • Bear & Kilt Freehouse ($): 110 8 Ave SW. Classic basement pub with cheap food/drinks and bar games (pool, darts, etc.)
  • Any of the above mentioned restaurants/bars from lunch!

HEAD TO BED, GOOD NIGHT!

Hop on a bus and visit Calgary’s best sites by bus on this guided tour . If taking a bus and having a guided tour is more your vibe then this is a great choice.

An added bonus to this tour is entry into Gasoline Alley Museum .

Inglewood Neighbourhood

This is Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood. It is so sweet! I love Inglewood for their cute little shops.

My top shops:

  • Silk Road Spice Merchant : 1419 9 Ave SE. I am obsessed with their everything spice blend (similar to everything bagel spice), I put it on my eggs daily.
  • The Apothecary in Inglewood : 921 9 Ave SE. Shop here for essential oils, bulk style herbs (think bulk barn for herbs), skin care and so much more!

14 of the Best Day Trips from Calgary

March 15, 2021 By Matthew G. Bailey 23 Comments

Updated: March 15th, 2021

While there are plenty of awesome things to do in Calgary , sometimes you just want to get out and see more of the province. Luckily, Calgary has the best location in Alberta. With the Canadian Rockies to the West, the Canadian badlands to the east, and both the prairies and the foothills on its doorstep, there’s no short of fun day trips from Calgary. Whether you’re looking to go horseback riding, white water rafting, skiing, hiking, or almost anything else you can think of, Calgary is a great place to be based.

In this Alberta travel guide, we’re going to share the best day trips from Calgary, which can easily be transformed into multi-day adventures if you have more time. There are lots of places you can choose from, and a range of both small and big towns, all offering their own unique charms and attractions.

Let’s get into it.

Table of Contents

Places To Visit Near Calgary By Car

Calgary is quite a central destination, making it an accessible place to reach many other amazing towns, cities, villages, and parks in the surrounding areas. While some popular areas such as Banff have tours, most of these destinations require your own vehicle. However, all of the places listed here are less than three hours away from Calgary, with many of them less than two hours.

Depending on what you’re most eager to see and do, this list should showcase at least one spot that is perfect for you. Here’s an extensive list of places to see around Calgary.

Top Calgary Day Trips to the West

It’s no secret that the most famous place to visit around Calgary is the Rocky Mountains. Banff National Park is just over an hour away and is one of the most beautiful places in the world. There’s also the Kananaskis, which is even closer and typically quieter than its big brother next door.

Drive Time: The Kananaskis is about an hour from Calgary, but it depends on how far you go.

The Kananaskis was once a local secret, but keeping a secret is no easy task when the area is full of towering mountain peaks, gorgeous crystal-clear lakes, and a plethora of outdoor adventures. There are a number of places to access the Kananasnkis including Highway 40 near Canmore as well as access points just off the Cowboy Trail and Turner Valley such as highway 546 and highway 540.

Also known as K-country, this is one of the best places to spot wildlife such as bears and bighorn sheep as well as indulge in the pristine mountain wilderness. It’s home to some incredible hiking opportunities in the summer but is also popular in the winter for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. In fact, you can even go downhill skiing at Nakiska Ski Area, which was home to the 1988 Winter Olympics.

One of our favourite places to go camping is at Spray Lakes West Campground, which is in the Kananaskis but there are also fancier options for accommodation, such as Mt Engadine Lodge and the Kananaskis Lodge, which is home to a Nordic Spa.

Canmore is one of the most popular day trips from Calgary.

Drive Time: Canmore is less than an hour’s drive from west Calgary.

There are so many trails to hike but one of our favourites is Ha Ling Peak, which can be a difficult climb but also a very busy spot on weekends. This is because it’s so close to the town but offers the chance to reach a mountain summit for mind-blowing views of the Canadian Rockies.

Once known as a quiet enclave of locals next to world-famous Banff, that is no longer the case. It was only a matter of time before Canmore, which is just 20 minutes from Banff, became as popular as it is now. It’s surrounded by beautiful mountain peaks and has a charming downtown core that’s popular with locals and visitors alike. You’ll find a seemingly endless network of hiking trails, as well as cave tours, shops, restaurants, and hotels. In the winter, it’s also home to epic cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and nearby downhill skiing and snowboarding.

Popular things to do :

  • Take a helicopter ride
  • Rock climbing
  • Enjoy a walking tour of the town
  • Wilderness walking

For an extensive list of what to do, check out our travel guide on things to do in Canmore .

Banff in the Winter - Day Trips from Calgary

Drive Time: Banff is just 1.5 hours from Calgary.

Banff truly needs no introduction. It’s one of the most visited destinations in all of Canada and is only 20 minutes west of Canmore. It’s one of the most beautiful mountain towns in the world and is full of attractions, including the Banff Gondola, the Banff Hot Springs, Mount Norquay Ski Resort, Sunshine Ski Resort, and an endless network of trails for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, biking, and more.

Skiing in Banff is incredibly popular during the winter months as it’s home to three world-class ski resorts, as well as some beautiful winter hikes, such as Johnston Canyon. For those interested in a foodie experience, the most popular of them all is Fairmont’s Eat the Castle tour .

Did you know that Okotoks used to be the headquarters for Must Do Canada? How about that! Now we’re in Calgary but we still visit family on a weekly basis. Okotoks is quite popular both for living and for visiting, with a few cool things to do as well as the charming historic Elizabeth street.

  • See the largest glacial erratic in North America
  • Visit the Seaman Stadium for a game or a tour
  • Go on a bike ride with the whole family
  • Browse through the art galleries and museums
  • Experience the Chinook Honey Farm

Where to stay:

Appreciate city views and access to a barbeque at Lakeview Inns & Suites . It’s a large, quaint-looking accommodation that provides guests with a comfy spot to enjoy a night or two.

Frank Slide Interpretive Centre - Day Trips from Calgary

Crowsnest Pass

Distance from Calgary : 2.5 hours.

Most people think of the Canadian Rockies as being west of Calgary but they’re also south of Calgary! Head south on Highway 2 or opt for Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail) for a more scenic route to the beautiful Crowsnest Pass. Although this can certainly be done as a long day trip (similar to Lake Louise), we always recommend spending a night to really make use of your time. After all, the Crowsnest Pass is one of the most beautiful regions in Alberta and is home to incredible hiking opportunities, golfing, historic sites, and the jaw-dropping Frank Slide. This area has a very tragic past and we highly recommend spending a couple of hours at Frank Slide as well as the nearby Crowsnest Museum.

  • Visit Lundbrek Falls and Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site
  • Visit the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre
  • Tour the historic streets of Coleman
  • Climb to the summit of Turtle Mountain

Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump Alberta

Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump

Distance from Calgary : 2 hours.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the province’s great indigenous treasures and one of the world’s biggest, oldest, and best-preserved buffalo jumps. What makes Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump extra special is the wonderful interpretive centre where you can learn all about this site, watch a reenactment video, and learn about the indigenous tribes that call this place home. The exhibition site details how the Blackfoot Bands used the area for buffalo hunting and they offer a number of tours, including the chance to reenact the buffalo hunt yourself!

Castle Provincial Park

Distance from Calgary: 2.5 hours.

Alberta’s newest provincial park is located just south of Pincher Creek and offers stunning scenery without all the crowds. You’ll find lots of hiking and mountain biking trails in Castle Provincial Park , as well as lakes and campgrounds. In addition, just outside the park is Castle Mountain Resort, one of the top ski resorts in the province. While the resort is most famous for its powder and steep runs, they also have a number of popular hikes in the summer.

Horsethief Canyon, Drumheller Alberta

Top Calgary Day Trips to the East

East of Calgary is what makes Alberta even more unique. Not only will you find mountains to the west and prairies to the north and south, but you’ll also find badlands to the east! This makes for some incredible scenery, unique hiking opportunities, and a chance to visit the Dinosaur capital of the world!

Distance from Calgary : 1 hr 30 min drive

If you’re a dinosaur enthusiast, Drumheller is going to blow your mind! This is known as the Dinosaur Capital , as it has some of the world’s richest fossil beds. The town is the known home of 20 types of dinosaur fossils, and there are plenty of Jurassic-style adventures to be had here. This is not only one of the most popular places to visit east of Calgary but also one of the most popular destinations in Alberta.

  • Go on the DinoWalk
  • Climb up the stairs inside the gigantic T-rex
  • Play on the bumper boats
  • Enjoy a game of golf
  • Visit Orkney Lookout
  • Get wonderfully wet at Rotary Spray Park
  • See the Badlands Amphitheatre

Want more? Check out our full travel guide to see all the best things to do in Drumheller .

Aspen Crossing Alberta

Aspen Crossing and Vulcan

Distance from Calgary : 1 hr 30 min drive or less.

Located in the ultra-small town of Mossleigh is one of the most popular attractions near Calgary. Aspen Crossing offers a train-themed experience, complete with an RV park, camping, and a truly unique opportunity to spend the night in a Caboose cabin. The most popular activity here is taking a scenic train ride through the prairies with options to experience things like a Cowboy Shootout, a Wine and Cheese event, Brunch, or even the Polar Express during the Christmas season. In addition, you’ll find one of the few remaining places in Alberta where there’s a trio of grain elevators still standing.

Now, if you’ve made it this far, you should continue on to the town of Vulcan, especially if you’re a fan of the TV series Star Trek. In fact, if you’re a fan of the show, the town of Vulcan is likely #1 on your bucket list. Located just 25-minutes from Mossleigh is a statue of the Star Trek Enterprise, murals of the Star Trek doctors, and even a ‘transporter’ to get you back to the Star Fleet. Even Leonard Nimoy visited in 2010!

Want to make it even more special? Consider visiting during the annual Spock Days, a fun family festival featuring a Star Trek-themed parade, soapbox derby, beer gardens and fireworks.

Great ideas. Are you excluding Waterton since you just need more time than you have in a day? It’s very reachable from Calgary.

August 17, 2021 at 12:08 pm

That’s a good point. It’s about the same distance as Lake Louise. We’ll add it 🙂

8 Best Day Trips From Calgary

easyday travel calgary

  • Destinations
  • Road Trips In Canada
  • Types of Travel

Besides the iconic Banff and Jasper National Parks on the Icefields Parkway, numerous other fascinating road trip destinations surround Alberta’s largest city. Before you go, ride to the Calgary Tower’s viewing area 627 feet above the city and picture what you’re about to see. If heights don’t faze you, stand on the glass floor section and watch the city’s bustle with a God’s-eye view. The tower is one of our five cool things to do in Calgary .

“Alberta,” the catchy official provincial song, says Alberta has it all. We can testify that it’s true. These are our favorite day trips from Calgary.

On the Albertan plains, you’ll go back to the future in Vulcan, the Official Star Trek Capital of Canada , and turn back time 3.9 billion years in the Drumheller Valley. In your mind, imagine bison’s thundering hooves running and crashing over the cliffs in Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park. Bask in the sunshine at Medicine Hat. Drive a highway where wildlife often outnumber people. Savor award-winning Gouda cheese at Sylvan Star Cheese.

Remember viewing the mountains from Calgary Tower ? Enjoy the southern and western Rockies. Yoho National Park of Canada is on the Rockies’ western slope. Embrace Yoho’s quieter, less-crowded vibe. To the south, celebrate peace at the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Vulcan Tourism Trek Station, Vulcan.

1. Vulcan, The Star Trek Capital of Canada

When the Canadian Pacific Railway founded Vulcan , an hour southeast of Calgary, officials named it for the Roman god of fire. From Roman times, the town leaped into the 22nd century and grabbed the planet Vulcan. On Star Trek , Vulcan was Mr. Spock’s home planet.

On our first Vulcan visit, we arrived after the Vulcan Tourism Trek Station had closed. Seeing the station and the Starship FX6-1995-A after dark somehow made the structures feel more real. Portraits of Star Trek ’s stars are on a billboard next to the starship.  Each portrait has a cutout around its head, enabling Trekkers to pose as their favorite character. During daylight hours, pack a picnic and eat at the table below the starship.

Starship, Vulcan.

Inside the station, look for Star Trek props, actor and actress autographs. Find Mr. Spock’s bust a few blocks from the station and compare your hand span with his Vulcan salute. A mural portrays the series’s medical personnel and brave folks may enter the transporter. “Beam me up, Scotty!”

Pro Tip : Boldly go to the town’s annual Spock Days festival.

Tyra, the World's Largest Dinosaur, Drumheller.

2. The Drumheller Valley: Dinosaur Capital Of The World

One and a half hours northeast of Calgary, the Drumheller Valley features dinosaurs, bizarre hoodoos, and the Atlas Coal Mine. Start your visit at towering, terrifying Tyra, the World’s Largest Dinosaur . At 86 feet tall, she’s 4.5-times larger than your average Tyrannosaurus Rex. After you recover from the sight, climb the 106 stairs to Tyra’s mouth.

Continue the dinosaur theme at Drumheller’s Royal Tyrrell Museum, one of our Best Places to Experience Dinosaurs In Canada . In the Palaezoic exhibit, a Dunkleosteus fish looks like a cross between a parrot and a snapping turtle. Watch out for the 69-foot long ichthyosaur resting in the Triassic Giant exhibit. A human would be only an appetizer for that beast. Allow at least 2 hours.

Going from dinosaurs to fossil fuels, see how Alberta powered its homes and industry in the 20th century. Site admission enables guests to tour the Atlas Coal Mine ’s surface. To learn more, sign up for one of several tours . On the surface, ride the mine train, and learn how the mine processed coal. Climb the 125-foot gantry to the tipple’s top. Go below in the Underground Mining Experience. Please note the tours’ safety requirements and difficulty ratings.

Hoodoos pepper Drumheller’s landscape. Get personal with them in these badlands hiking options .

Stuff yourself with a mammoth burger from Bernie & The Boys . Stay at the Tyrannosaurus Rest .

Pro Tip : Visitors swarm the area between May and August. Avoid the heat and crowds; visit in the off-season.

Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park sign and entrance.

3. Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, Trochu

Dry Island preserved rich bone beds of Albertosaurus fossils, including some now on display at the Royal Tyrrell. Eons later, the Cree stampeded bison off the park’s 148-foot cliffs. The Red Deer River runs through the park, but the name Dry Island comes from the 722-foot mesa that towers above the river. Humans have never plowed the mesa’s top, and so it retains its native grasses.

Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park, Trochu with yellow leafed trees and curving water valley.

The road descends steeply to the river and it turns treacherous during wet weather. At the river, unload a canoe and encounter the badlands from a totally different viewpoint. Watch for rocks, especially during the summer.

Trails are only loosely defined. Avoid the light gray bentonite clay in wet weather, it’s slippery. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it here.

In the fall, the flaming trees combine with the folded topography to turn the park into a spectacular landscape painting.

 Saamis Teepee, Medicine Hat

4. Medicine Hat

The sun shines brightly in Medicine Hat , Canada’s sunniest city, three hours southeast of Calgary. Calgary erected The Saamis Teepee to honor indigenous Canadians during the 1988 Winter Olympics. After the Olympics, Medicine Hat was awarded the giant structure. The teepee stands 20 stories high and is 160 feet wide. Ten storyboards explain the First Nations culture.

Some of the world’s largest sandstone boulders call Red Rocks home. Because the rocks formed at the bottom of ancient seas, sharp-eyed visitors may find fossil bones, leaves, and shells. Indigenous peoples camped there, leaving numerous artifacts.

Medalta Stone Ware building and sign with four flag poles in front of the building.

The Medalta pottery factory once exported its wares throughout the world. Now it’s a time capsule preserving western Canada’s Industrial Revolution. Look for ceramics artists in residence and peruse their wares. My husband bought a Medalta bean pot for my Christmas present. It contributes to the tastiest soups ever.

Eat pad-Thai and red choo chee at Sabai Thai Fusion or an AJ chicken sandwich at Grit City Distillery .

5. Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site (And The David Thompson Highway)

Rocky Mountain House (RMH), 2.5 hours northeast of Calgary, was a magical experience. We entered the backside of the historic site because of a mistaken GPS. We tailgated within earshot of the North Saskatchewan River. As we walked toward the main entrance, RMH history unfolded before us. We viewed the trading posts as they occurred in history, then arrived at the MĂŠtis village. What a delight! We learned how to prepare a hide, cook a bannock, and make a drum. The historic site offers numerous camping options.

Bighorn sheep across the road from Abraham Lake.

After we left RMH, we headed to the Icefields Parkway on Highway 11, the David Thompson Highway. Thompson was an early explorer who mapped more territory than Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. In our 2-hour drive, we met only one car. Instead, an elk ran beside our car and bighorn sheep and lambs cavorted beside Abraham Lake as if we weren’t there.

Outside Sylvan Star Cheese and sign.

6. Sylvan Star Cheese Farm, Red Deer County

On your way to RMH, stop at Sylvan Star Cheese . After they moved to Canada from The Netherlands, the Schalkwyk family struggled to find quality Gouda cheese. So they crafted their own. It’s some of the best cheese we’ve ever eaten. Tour the factory 1.5 hours north of Calgary and buy some cheese. From Calgary, Sylvan Star is halfway to Edmonton , Alberta’s capital.

Family walks down trial to view Takakkaw Falls in the background at Yoho National Park, Canada.

7. Yoho National Park of Canada, Field, B.C.

On the Rockies’ British Columbia side, visit Yoho National Park, 2 hours west of Calgary. Between Banff and Yoho, the road cuts through Kicking Horse Pass National Historic Site . At the viewpoints, stop to watch trains disappear and reappear in the Spiral Tunnels . The easy 0.75-mile Walk in the Past trail leads to an abandoned locomotive.

Numerous waterfalls stream over Yoho’s cliffs. Start with Canada’s second-highest waterfall, the 258-foot Takakkaw Falls with its waterwheel. “Takakkaw” means “magnificent” in Cree. The 20-minute walk from the parking lot is mostly paved and easy until you reach the waterfall’s base. You may also hike to Laughing and Wapta falls . Canoe on peaceful Emerald Lake or stroll the gentle 3.23-mile lakeshore trail.

Stay at the Le Beausoleil Bed and Breakfast in Golden. B.C., and eat at The Wolf’s Den . Order a Tatonka, an 8-oz. bison patty with whiskey bacon jam, and Canadian maple syrup pie.

Outside view of Prince of Wales Hotel.

8. Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Waterton Lakes

Two and a half hours southwest of Calgary, the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park anchors the Rockies as they span the US-Canadian border. Waterton Lakes is the Canadian side of the peace park and is quieter without Glacier’s tourist hordes. The fabulous Prince of Wales Hotel is the park’s centerpiece. You must enjoy afternoon tea in the hotel’s Royal Steward Dining Room. Outdoors, hike, ride a horse, enjoy a boat tour, kayak, or paddleboard.

In the winter, Waterton Lakes is nearly deserted — by people. Wildlife is everywhere. Still, the park remains in business with these winter activities .

Mother cow and cute calf cross the road Chief Mountain HWY on the northeastern mountains and forest of Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

From May 15 to September 30, cross the border directly into Glacier National Park at the Chief Mountain Crossing . Alternatively, drive 2.5 hours southeast of Calgary to Cardston, Alberta, and visit the Remington Carriage Museum before entering Glacier’s east side .  Pro Tip : When planning a trip to Canada, remember that many seasonal attractions close or reduce their hours after Canadian Thanksgiving , the second Monday in October, through mid-May.

The Calgary area and western Canada are filled with forested mountains, glaciers, sparkling rivers, waterfalls, and wildlife:

About Calgary

  • Where is it? Calgary is a city in the province of Alberta in Canada located on the West of the country and the province borders the USA (Montana and Washington).
  • The population of Calgary is 1.3 million.
  • Closest airport? Calgary International Airport is 19km from the city centre with regular shuttle buses from the airport to downtown , taxis and trains to the action taking only about 20 minutes.
  • Airport code? YYC.
  • Best time to visit Calgary? Summer is the best time for a Calgary trip but the Fall / Winter months are great because the NHL season will have started so you can catch a Flames game!
  • How many days in Calgary? I’ve only ever spent one day at a time in Calgary as I only live in Banff. If you’re visiting I’d allow yourself maybe two days in the city to explore this itinerary, join some tours and take a slower pace before moving on to Alberta’s beautiful nature.
  • Where to stay in Calgary? Always pre-book accommodation for cities like this especially if you’re seeing a hockey game. Check availability here:

Follow this itinerary for the perfect things to do with just 24 hours in Calgary.

Breakfast at Holy Grill

How else would I start this Calgary must do list other than coffee and breakfast?! Head to Holy Grill to feel like a Calgarian as this breakfast spot is a family-owned business serving the finest Maple Syrup to satisfy your Canadian taste dreams.

They have multiple locations across town so you can find your branch wherever you are staying.

Climb Calgary Tower

Image of calgary tower from street view. Wide shot is looking up at the tower with blue sky behind.

Out of all the Calgary places to visit, this is probably the most famous. An iconic image for the city, you can admire the tower from afar or choose to climb it for epic views over the city. Calgary Tower general admission is not expensive so makes for cheap things to do in Calgary.

It’s considered a Calgary must see so head to downtown for this activity.

What I found crazy though was the fact that this tower, once the tallest in North America, was actually a lot shorter than the other skyscrapers in the city at just 158m.

Take a Photograph with the World’s Tallest Mural

Image of world's tallest mural in Calgary on side of building.

Pinned on Google Maps as the ‘World’s Tallest Mural’, this street art is located on a giant, concrete, flat wall on the East side of ‘First on Tenth’ building right opposite Calgary Tower.

The work is 95 metres high and was done by a German artist named DAIM.

Address : 105 10 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0B8, Canada

See Street Art and Statues

image of street art in Calgary downtown

Seeing these statues and street art are free activities Calgary has to offer if you want to walk around the city self-guided. If you’d prefer a guide to take you to the hotspots and learn about the different murals/projects, join this three hour street-art tour of Calgary including a few craft beer tastings and makes for fun Calgary Canada things to do.

Wonderland Sculpture

In front of the Bow Building you’ll find an art project called Wonderland by Jaume Plensa, a Spanish artist. It’s a metal frame of a girl’s head and easily one of the most instagrammable attractions in Calgary.

Address : 110 6 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0G2, Canada

The Alberta Five

The Alberta Five is a name given to five suffragettes from Alberta who advocated for women’s rights in the 1800s. They became a crucial asset to Canada’s history and therefore became known as The Famous Five. They fought for women to become part of ‘persons’ in the law and bills of Canada at that time.

There is now a homage to these women in the form of five statues that you can visit as points of interest Calgary.

Address : Women are persons, 8 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0K7, Canada

Lunch and Live Music at Ship and Anchor

Image of two musicians playing live music in Ship and Anchor in Calgary

The Ship and Anchor is a great establishment in Calgary with an authentic British pub-vibe from it’s decor, naval themed bar, homage to lots of British football teams and sports showing on the TV.

They have a large menu and serve food right up until closing time. I went for their house burger and poutine which I thoroughly enjoyed with a local craft beer.

Unbeknownst to us, they had two bands in that day playing live music and provided a warm, fun and enjoyable atmosphere. If you’re looking for things to do in Calgary Alberta, check out local bars who have live music on an afternoon. Especially the Ship and Anchor!

Address : 534 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B1, Canada

Cross The Peace Bridge

Above the Bow River you’ll find many bridges but none quite like the peace bridge which has been accommodating pedestrians and cyclers since 2012.

It has a red and white criss-cross design and resembles a candy-cane-style bullet train as it’s completely covered and more like a tunnel when you pass through.

If there’s one thing what to see in Calgary in one day, crossing this bridge over to the North Side from the centre is it.

It’s called Peace Bridge due to its proximity to Memorial Drive.

Visit WinSport Olympic Park

When visiting Calgary what to do is always the first question. And the Olympic Park is always the first answer. Calgary hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988 and the Olympic Park is still standing which is now run by WinSport and available for you to explore.

In the Summer you can take a guided tour of the park, karting and zip-lining and in the Winter you can skate, ski and snowboard.

Optional : If you’re interested in local craft beer, join a Brewery tour of Calgary . Go to three different breweries and get the inside info from your beer-guide!

Evening – A Must See in Calgary

Have dinner at anejo.

Anejo is a Calgary home for Mexican food and long list of tequila and providing a unique tequila experience is key for their restaurant.

The food is also delicious from their happy hour tacos, stuffed vegetables, salads and soups. My favourite, however, is the Fundido Tradicional which is a large pot of melted cheese, mushroom, chorizo and salsa served with warm tortillas. Incredible!

You can book an event, take home your own margarita kit and buy gift cards for the next time you’re in town. They also have locations in Banff and Toronto.

Address : 2116 4 St SW #2, Calgary, AB T2S 1W7, Canada

See a Flames Game at Saddleback Stadium

Image of Calgary Flames playing Winnipeg Jets at Saddleback stadium in Calgary. Image is from high seats with the stadium in complete red lights and players on.

The Scotiabank Saddleback Stadium is the home of Calgary Flames hockey team located in Stampede Park in Calgary and one of the best places to visit in Calgary.

This is a huge place with over 8000 seats surrounding the rink, multiple restaurants, bars and information on the history of hockey. It’s not just hockey held here they also have concerts and performances like Shania Twain and Disney on Ice!

When it comes to a must do in Calgary though, a hockey game at Saddleback pretty much tops the list. I had the most fun here from the pre-game build up, the classic North American food and foam fingers you see at sports games, half-time shows, giveaways, anthem, charity, music, lights and of course the brilliant game!

If you take nothing else from this Calgary travel blog, please go see a hockey game , you won’t regret it!

Afterwards, you could always check out Cowboys Casino and Nightclub which is always jam-packed after a Flames game and one of the best things to do in Calgary at night to end your sightseeing in Calgary.

Filming Locations Calgary

There are a few TV shows and films that used Calgary as locations for shooting. Take a walk around and see if you can spot filming locations from Cool Runnings, Fargo, The Revenant, Ghostbusters: After Life and Interstellar .

Join a Calgary City Tour

For the best of Calgary organised on your behalf, join one of these walking Calgary day tours to explore Calgary:

More Things to Do Calgary Canada

There are lots more things to do in Calgary Canada so next time you’re in Calgary or if you have longer check out the Glenbow Museum , wander downtown area, do some shopping at the malls, visit Fort Calgary (where Calgary was founded) or tour Heritage Park Historical Village .

If you’re lucky enough to be here in July, do not miss the Calgary Stampede , one of the most famous festivals in Canada.

After Calgary

Calgary is an excellent gateway city for bigger and better things. How about the Canadian Rockies?! Yes. In just an hour and a half you can be within the mountains of Banff National Park and a few hours more you can head to Jasper National Park .

You can take multiple one day trips from Calgary to these breathtaking places after all the things to do in Calgary CA.

We live in Edmonton, but Calgary calls us every weekend, and their downtown city vibes, food, and quick access to the Rocky Mountains are just hard to beat in Alberta . The city is also a great base to explore more of our province, and so we thought of compiling a list of our favorite and absolute best day trips from Calgary.

Many of these day trips are UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Alberta!

Getting to Calgary, where to stay, and transportation for Calgary day trips

Calgary is located in Alberta and it is the largest city in the province. If you are flying to Calgary, you will touch down at YYC airport. From the airport, you can easily get a car rental, or shuttle buses to your hotel, or connect to nearby towns via Red Arrow buses (buses available from the airport too).

If you are driving to Calgary from Vancouver British Columbia the roads are well connected and you will be using Highway 1 to get there. If driving within the province of Alberta (including a 3-hour drive from Edmonton) takes you via Highway 2 or Queen Elizabeth Highway.

We have traveled all throughout the year (summers and winters), and it has been fine. However, we recommend adding extra travel/driving hours in the winter depending on the weather and road conditions. As always, use precaution while driving in winters.

Calgary day trips: View from Calgary Tower

We love staying near the airport and in the downtown Calgary area. Here are our top three hotels for your stay,

  • Hampton Inn Calgary Airport: Our favorite hotel in Calgary airport. Big, clean rooms with free parking, breakfast, and wifi. Book your stay here
  • Sheraton Hotel Eau Claire: This is a 4-star hotel, located in downtown Calgary. It offers world-class suites (+ downtown views). Great location for city exploration. Check out nightly room rates for Sheraton
  • Fairmont Palliser Hotel: Vintage 5-star hotel, the Fairmont Palliser is guaranteed to give you a delightful and memorable stay. Dine at their Hawthorn dining room, and get pampered with their spa services. Amazing location (you can walk down to various attractions from here).  Check rates and availability here

Cochrane Alberta

Cochrane makes for an easy day trip from Calgary. We love embarking on this route to the Canadian Rockies , and during winters we love to hang out at the Ghost Reservoir Provincial Recreation Area.

In wintertime, the reservoir is completely frozen and you can skate here for free. Depending on the season and lake conditions, you can also go on ice fishing here. During summers, you can spend some time at the Ghost Lake area, and take in the views or go on a quick stroll.

Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is a must visit on a day trip. This park is only open for day-use; and no overnight camping is allowed. Glenbow Ranch is a sprawling area and it is your answer to stunning landscapes and views from here, are every photographer’s delight. The site also preserves historical resources along the Bow River.

Big Hill Springs is another provincial park located just north of Cochrane. This park is sprinkled with a large spring and a series of small waterfalls that flow over rocky terraces. The entire area is covered with lush greenery and is also home to a historic fish hatchery.

If you prefer leisurely time outdoors, you can embark on walking/biking trails in the Riverfront area or head to the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary. In Cochrane, you can also book ATV tours via Hidden Trails Adventures.

Kananaskis Country

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour one way

Kananaskis Country Day trips from Calgary

Kananaskis Country makes for a great Calgary day trip option. It is also a nice alternative to Banff , so expect lovely mountain views, tons of hiking and outdoor activities, and best of all a Nordic Spa to pamper yourself!

Kananaskis Country is big, but on a day trip, you can definitely embark on a short hike and then soak in and relax at the Spa. There are quite a few spa packages to choose from, including massage and rejuvenation sessions.

Kananaskis is a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy paddling on Lower Kananaskis Lake or Elbow River. Opt for a horseback riding tour, or embark on any one of the following hikes – Mount Yamnuska (4 – 6 hours, or turnaround at 1 hour one way), the Upper Kananaskis Lake Loop (5 hours), Three Isle Lake Trail (3 hours one way start early for this hike), or easy Grotto Canyon Hike.

We prefer to just relax and hang out in the various scenic parks and sites in Kananaskis. On a day trip, we stop in Canmore for lunch, or at the Forte restaurant in the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge.

easyday travel calgary

We LOVE Canmore. This is one little town that always brings in great memories. We visited Canmore as a day trip from Calgary in 2010, when we were road tripping from Saskatchewan. At that time, Canmore was not as well known as it is today. But its spirit and beauty have stayed the same.

On a day trip, we like to wander the downtown or main town centre area of Canmore, checking out art galleries, walking trails like the Policeman’s Creek, Big Head Sculpture, NWP Barracks, and relishing delicious food and amazing mountain views. You can definitely add the Canmore Cave tour (Rat’s Nest) on a day trip, just ensure you book it ahead of time.

Canmore Policemen's Creek

Canmore is a great option for a romantic weekend trip too. A 2-3 day trip will allow you to go on longer hikes (such as the Grassi Lakes Hike), or skiing at the Nordic Provincial Park in winter.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Fort Macleod

Head Smashed Buffalo Jump on a day trip from Calgary Canada

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is a buffalo jump located about 18 kilometres west of Fort Macleod. This site was used for over 5,500 years by Indigenous Peoples to kill buffaloes by driving them off the cliff. The cliff is about 36 foot high.

This interesting attraction is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is also our National Historic Site. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump lost its significance when the Europeans established themselves in the province.

In the 20th century, an Elder of the Piikani Nation took the work for restoring this site, and due to his efforts we can explore the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump today.

In the fall, there is a Harvest Festival which is worth visiting. This festival showcases the Blackfoot culture and is a great opportunity to learn about them. Note: This site is currently closed: October 2020, check updates here

Longview is a cute little town in Alberta. It is an entry gate to the Kananaskis Provincial Park, and is accessible along the Cowboy Trail. The town is one of a kind with cowboy themed restaurants and gourmet cafes, galleries and the star –  Bar U Ranch National Historic Site.

Bar U Ranch is located south of town and it showcases historical information in a unique way through period eateries and galleries. You must visit this historic site if you are a cowboy fan.

Imagine riding on a wagon (pulled by Percheron horses) and ‘experiencing’ life as a cowboy from the 1800s. Learn about old-style ranching ways, visit hundreds of year old barns, and see cattle, saddle horses, and other farm animals.

Take time to explore the trails and dirt roads to see the countryside, as this is one of the finest Prairie experiences in Alberta!

Aspen Crossing

Aspen Crossing is a fun day trip from Calgary. Located in Mossleigh, Aspen Crossing is known for the last of the CPR trains that passed through the stunning Prairies landscape.

The trains are a unique tourist attraction and sort of a heritage treasure. This attraction was created out of the left off rail compartments. Today a visitor can embark on a 3 hour tour through the town and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The Prairie landscape looks serene with grain elevators sprinkled everywhere.

Near the train station, you can eat, hang out and play in the countryside. In the winters, you can ride the special, “Polar Express” and experience a train ride to the North Pole! Check out their cool train rides like the Terror Train, Prairie Train. View tour schedules here

Sylvan Lake

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour 30 minutes one way

Sylvan Lake best day trips from Calgary Alberta

Sylvan Lake is a nice outdoor day trip option from Calgary and Edmonton, it is sort of mid way between the 2 cities. Sylvan Lake was on my list for the pretty lighthouse and the lake views.

But don’t worry there are plenty of things to do here. Start with water activities – and this doesn’t have to include the usual swimming, beachside time with kids, you can actually book water-jet adventures, and have a blast at the Sylvan Lake Aqua Splash.

Near the lake is the lighthouse; and this particular one was built to replace the original lighthouse. In 2013, the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club undertook the project and built this iconic landmark in the town. Image how beautiful it looks in the evening – these are perfect sunset goals!

If you are not into water activities and the lake, you can visit a farmers market or go golfing at the Sylvan Lake Golf and Country Club or Meadowlands.

Sylvan Lake is home to many festivals including Jazz At the Lake Fest (summer), 1913 Days and Sylvan Lake Winterfest (winter).

Fish Creek Provincial Park

Distance from Calgary: 20 minutes one way

Fish Creek Provincial Park is located in southern Calgary. There are quite a few activities to enjoy in this provincial park that can easily occupy an entire day.

Fish Creek Provincial Park is perfect all year round. In the summer time, you can spend a day hiking, swimming, enjoying a picnic, birdwatching, or strolling at their many walking paths. The park is free to enter and explore (except for the Sikome Lake beach area).

In the winter, a visit to the park is a must for snowshoeing and winter hiking. The Winter Carnival festival takes place here!

Bragg Creek Provincial Park

Distance from Calgary: 45 minutes one way

Forget me not Pond Bragg Creek

Bragg Creek Provincial is a nice and easy day trip from Calgary. One way day tour takes about 45 minutes, and you have the entire day to explore the little town and the park. The Elbow Falls are the most popular attraction near the park.

Visit the Elbow Falls area, and go on a quick stroll or walk the interpretive trail. This trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly. Near the falls is the Ellen Bill day use area where you can hang out, picnic and enjoy a nice afternoon while listening to the gushing sound of the Elbow River.

From golfing, biking to ATV tours, the terrain in and around Bragg Creek Provincial Park will delight you! READ : Things to do in Bragg Creek

Banff National Park

View of Banff town - Alberta towns

My absolute favorite place in Canada, oh Banff! We are pros in embarking on day trips to Banff from Calgary especially during high peak season as accommodation in Banff is crazy! And sometimes after finishing a work week, we run to the mountains on a Saturday and then head back to Calgary (and then home the next day to Edmonton).

When you are visiting on a day trip, you really can’t see it all, you have to prioritize. We will share 4 options for day trip itineraries to help you out

Banff Gondola Views

  • Option 1 is to stick to Banff town for a day trip. You can explore the Banff Avenue, get on the Sulphur Mountain Gondola, check out Bow Falls and finish the day at the Cascade Gardens
  • Option 2, explore Banff Avenue and then embark on a short hike near Cave and Basin (Marsh Loop – 1 hour round trip or Sundance Canyon – 3 hour round trip).
  • Not into hiking? Switch that for canoeing at the Vermillion Lakes. READ : How to spend 3 days in Banff itinerary
  • Option 4 is for those who like to drive around and drool at mountains (and don’t want to get out of the car, that’s me sometimes!). Enjoy a drive from Banff town to Two Jack Lake and then Lake Minnewanka Loop. If you have time on your hands, opt for the Minnewanka Lake cruise. We also included Moraine Lake on this drive, and we reached there by evening to beat the rush (on a day of lakes itinerary)!

Lake Louise

Distance from Calgary: 2 hours one way

Lake Louise views

Located inside Banff National Park is the beautiful hamlet of Lake Louise. On a day trip, you must head straight to Lake Louise and stay there for the day to maximize sightseeing (don’t add Banff or Yoho National Park to the itinerary).

At the Lake, you can go canoeing, hike the Lake Agnes trail to reach the teahouse at 2134 metres.

Lake louise short hikes in winter

During winters in Lake Louise , enjoy ice skating in a natural rink surrounded by magnificent mountain views. There are indoor skating options at the Fairmont Chateau hotel. Fairmont Chateau hotel is a nice place for a romantic coffee date or to enjoy afternoon high tea.

Lake Louise centre area is open all year round, and you can eat there, and buy candies and souvenirs.

Distance from Calgary: 1 hr 30  minutes one way

Red Deer is mid way between Calgary and Edmonton, and this is our coffee break stop on our road trips. The city is definitely intriguing. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum caught our attention and on your day trip you can pay a quick visit to check out the sporting achievements from the province.

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery is a must visit to learn about the city’s history, and the best part is that the museum has a large collection of First Nations art. If you are wanting to shop and dine, there is a nice Red Deer shopping complex to hang out.

In the winter you can go ice skating at the Bower Ponds. Oh and don’t forget to stop by Donut Mill 🙂

Distance from Calgary: 1 hour 45 minutes one way

Drumheller Day trip from Calgary

The day trip from Calgary to Drumheller will take you to the dinosaur period. This town is home to Midland Provincial Park, Drumheller Dinosaur Park, Royal Tyrrell Dinosaur Museum, and stunning hoodoos.

As soon as you arrive in Drumheller make your way to Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology whilst enjoying the lovely views. The museum will take 1 – 2 hours, and after that go on a short hike to the Coulee Viewpoint ( Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

From the park drive through the arid landscape, look at mining sites and ghost towns. These ghost towns were once thriving in the 19th century and now have been abandoned. Then stop by the Star Mine Suspension Bridge for a quick break, followed by a tour of the Atlas Coal Mine.

In the evening head to the Hoodoo Trail for capturing beautiful sunset views over the hoodoos .

Waterton Lakes National Park

Distance from Calgary: 3 hour one way

Watertown Lakes National Park in Canada seen from the Bears Hump.

Although 3 hours is a lot for a day trip, we found this to be an easier option to explore Waterton from Calgary when accommodation is expensive. So it is doable as long as you start early, and your day trip itinerary will mostly include exploring the town, the lake, short nature trails and a nice lunch break! (And sometimes with only a weekend to explore, we drive and stay in Calgary and from there visit the national park)

Waterton Lakes National Park is in southern Alberta and it borders Montana’s Glacier National Park. In 1932, both the National Parks were combined to form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

The National Park forms a part of the Canadian Rockies Mountain system and is known for its lakes –  Upper and Middle Waterton lakes, Cameron Falls, Red Rock Canyon, with stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. You can plan to capture all of these on a day trip, especially one of the Waterton Lakes, and Cameron Falls is easily accessible from the town.

Waterton definitely deserves at least a weekend stay, and a day trip might be rushed (but still doable in warmer months). If you are visiting for 2 -3 days, embark on hiking trails, check out wildlife including Bisons.

Final Words Best Day Trips from Calgary Canada

In case you didn’t know, we LOVE Calgary. When you plan on visiting the city to explore the Canadian Rockies do set side additional day or two to explore some of the other wonders of the province like the Dinosaur Museum, ranch and the countryside, adventure hiking trails & ATV tours, and small towns from Calgary.

You will be delighted to see such amazing Prairie landscape and traditions in Alberta!
