Quiz: Can you identify these New Zealand towns and cities?

Last month Newshub Travel put readers to the test by asking them to identify cities from around the world solely by looking at an image from Google Street View .

As the push for more and more local tourism continues, we thought it would be a good chance to quiz our Newshub travellers on New Zealand's towns and cities using the same Google Street View method.

Some may be more obvious than others, and the locations will be much easier to identify if you've visited the location in the photo.

Street names have been blurred out, but landmarks and landscapes haven't.

Take the quiz, then share your results in the Newshub Travel Facebook group .

Flights cancelled after volcano erupts in New Zealand

F lights in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand faced disruptions and cancellations after a volcanic eruptions sent ash plumes into the sky, with authorities warning they could continue for “weeks to months”.

On Thursday August 22, at least 10 fights were cancelled and three were delayed from both Tauranga and Rotorua Airports, which mostly serve domestic Air New Zealand journeys, following the eruption of Whakaari White Island volcano. It appears that the flight schedule has now gone back to normal.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation to determine whether any further flights in or out of Rotorua will be impacted and advise customers travelling today to check the Air NZ app or our website for the latest information on their flight,” a spokesperson from the airline told AFP Thursday.

"The decision to cancel or delay flights this morning was a proactive safety measure."

Whakaari White Island is itself a volcano that is found around 48km from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand in the Bay of Plenty.

The island was once a popular tourist destination until it was shut off to the public after a disaster in 2019 when it erupted and killed 22 people who were visiting the island.

The volcano had begun “near continuous minor eruptive activity” on 9 August with “minor amounts of volcanic ash in the steam and gas plume”, GNS Science , a research institute that has been monitoring the volcano, said.

The institute added that this could continue for weeks to months. The Bay of Plenty Civil Defense said in a statement on Thursday that “changes in wind direction may affect aviation.”

“Stay in touch with your airline if you have flights planned, but the advice to our communities is the same.”

“Follow the advice of the harbourmaster and keep a distance of 2 nautical miles from the island if you are out on the water,” they added.

Footage taken of the volcano by the MetService and GNS suggests that the increased amount of ash in the plume is coming from a new active vent around 10-15m in length.

While westerly winds have been mostly pushing the ash away from the mainland, a northerly wind pushed the plume towards the Bay of Plenty overnight, causing the ash to be a risk to any flights due to fly in the path, New Zealand’s MetService meteorologist Mathapelo Makgabutlane told 1News.

“As the weather changes the plume may at times be blown towards the Bay of Plenty coast,” GNS wrote in their monitoring update. “However, with the current levels of ash emission, there is a very low likelihood of ash impacting the mainland.”

New Zealand raised its volcanic alert level earlier this month to three, which is a minor eruption, out of a maximum of five levels.

Rugby league: Kiwis to host Australia, Tonga as Pacific Championships return for 2024

The Kiwis and Kiwi Ferns will return to action at the end of the year, as New Zealand Rugby League and the NRL have confirmed the Pacific Championships tests for October and November.

Fresh from winning the 2023 iteration of the competition with a record 30-0 victory over Australia in Hamilton, the Kiwis will get the chance to defend their title and host the Kangaroos and Mate Ma’a Tonga in Christchurch and Auckland respectively.

The Kiwis’ clash against Australia on October 27 will also see international rugby league return to Christchurch for the first time since 2019, when New Zealand defeated Great Britain 23-8 at Rugby League Park.

That clash will also serve as a double-header, as the Kiwi Ferns also host the Jillaroos at the same venue on the same day.

While the Kiwis will end a five-year wait to return to Christchurch, the Kiwi Ferns will end a streak that dates back to 1998 in their test comeback in the garden city.

Like their male counterparts, the Kiwi Ferns also claimed their title in 2023 with a 12-6 victory over the Jillaroos at Melbourne’s AAMI Park last October.

Six days later, the Kiwis will take the field at Go Media Stadium against Tonga, in a rematch of New Zealand’s 26-6 victory from 2022.

Tonga’s presence in Auckland will be a huge boon for rugby league in Aotearoa, with Go Media Stadium having previously seen swarms of fans support their team, notably during the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

A day later, the Kiwi Ferns will travel to face Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby as their second match of the Pacific Championships.

Following both sets of fixtures, two of the Kiwis, Kangaroos and Mate Ma’a Tonga will face off in a tournament decider in Sydney.

The Kiwis’ fixtures will also mark the debut of New Zealand great Stacey Jones as New Zealand head coach, following Michael Maguire’s exit at the end of 2023.

As was the case in 2023, a second-tier Pacific Bowl competition will be played concurrently with the first-tier championship.

While no nations have as of yet been confirmed by the NRL, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and the Cook Islands loom as options for the men’s competition.

Samoa, who contested the Championship in 2023, will be missing from this year’s iteration, and will instead face England in two tests away from home.

On the women’s side, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and the Cook Islands loom as options to play the bowl competition, while the Kiwi Ferns, Kangaroos and Papua New Guinea contest the championship.
