If you're planning a trip to Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida , visiting Everglades National Park should be on your to-do list. The South Florida national park is known for its expansive beauty, as well as its varied population of wildlife that includes everything from bobcats to alligators.

To see all the Everglades has to offer, sign up for a guided tour. U.S. News consulted both traveler sentiment and expert opinion to identify the top Everglades tours. Before you go, make sure you read through the National Park Service's Wildlife Viewing Ethics to keep both yourself and the animals safe during your time in the park. When choosing the best Everglades tours, we avoided recommending operators that promote wildlife shows or encourage feeding or holding the animals for photo-ops.

Visitors should plan to pay a fee to enter the park, as it may not be included in the price of the tour ticket. You should also keep in mind that many of these tour operators are located at least 30 miles west of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Tours that run on airboats – open-air vessels with huge fans at the back that propel the boat – can be very loud. Companies will generally offer ear protection, but if you or your companions are sensitive to loud noises, contact the tour provider to discuss options before you book.

Located in Kissimmee on Lake Tohopekaliga, Marsh Landing Adventures promises travelers an in-depth look at the headwaters of the Everglades and the plants and animals that inhabit its waters. What's more, the company says it can reach areas of the Everglades that are inaccessible to larger boats because of its small crafts. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Reservations are required, and there is a 1% fuel surcharge added to each ticket. Marsh Landing Adventures also offers hourlong, two-hour and four-hour airboat rides.

Reviewers are also complimentary of the boat captains, who they describe as entertaining and knowledgeable.

Tours depart multiple times Monday through Saturday, although timing may be modified based on the season. It's a good idea to reserve your tour in advance. Everglades City Airboat Tours is located approximately 85 miles west of Miami and 35 miles southeast of Naples, Florida.

Buffalo Tiger Airboat Tours – 45-Minute Standard Airboat Tour

The Miccosukee family-owned company's standard tour focuses on introducing visitors to the homelands of the Miccosukee people: an American Indian tribe that migrated to Florida before it became a state. During the tour, you'll not only see local wildlife, but also will get to see a Miccosukee Indian camp and take a nature walk. Visitors recommend the tour, describing it as an amazing experience thanks to the small, intimate group size.

These tours run seven days a week; since they're semiprivate, you must call or email to find out the best times to depart. River of Grass Adventures also offers sunset tours of the Everglades.

What's more, reviewers appreciate that the tours are limited to just eight participants.

Tours are available Monday through Saturday from August to April; times vary by season. Children must be at least 7 years old to participate. Tourgoers will enjoy three to 3.5 hours out on the water but should plan to spend a total of four hours on-site from start to finish. Shurr Adventures Everglades also offers a full-day tour of the mangrove tunnels, as well as a motorboat tour in the Ten Thousand Islands region of Everglades National Park, among other options.

Shark Valley Tram Tours

During the two-hour tour, travelers also have the opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife. Tourgoers enjoy learning about the Everglades from the expert guides and say riding the tram is part of the fun. Many also recommended taking a morning tour to avoid the midday heat.

From mid-December through late April, tours depart on the hour daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. From May through mid-December, tours depart at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m. Shark Valley Tram Tours also offers self-guided bike tours. (Note that you'll have to pay a separate fee to enter Everglades National Park for any tour.)

Everglades Florida Adventures – Ten Thousand Islands Tour

Price: Adults from $59; kids from $29 Duration: 3 hours

If you're hoping to see the Everglades by boat, but want something a little quieter than an airboat ride, consider this cruise. Tourgoers report spotting lots of birds, turtles, dolphins and manatees. They also call out the insightful crew and clean, comfortable boat as highlights.

Cruises are offered Monday to Friday at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Everglades Florida Adventures also offers kayak and canoe rentals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Like any other form of transportation, riding an airboat may come with some risks. To stay safe on your Everglades airboat tour, be sure to choose a company run by experienced, professional boaters (most of which undergo special training and are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard) and adhere to all rules set forth by your guide. Parents should keep a close eye on children and be sure they are properly fitted for their life jackets, and all passengers should protect against the heat by wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. Commercial airboats typically do not exceed speeds of 30 to 40 mph to ensure a safe, smooth ride, and most operators will reschedule your tour in the event of lightning or other inclement weather. Tour companies will also generally provide riders with proper ear protection, as the boats are quite loud.

Typically, passengers will feel the most comfortable in lightweight, sleeveless clothing and shorts while on an Everglades airboat tour. If you are taking a wintertime tour, keep an eye on the weather – pants and long sleeves may be a better option, but you likely won't need a heavy jacket. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen and water to protect yourself from the effects of the sun; you may also want a hat to provide further shade and keep hair in place. Passengers with long hair are advised to wear it in a ponytail or bun to keep it from becoming knotted in the wind. Tourgoers may also wish to apply some bug spray prior to embarking on their adventure.

Airboat tours last about an hour, though duration will depend on the tour company.

An airboat's top speed is about 30 mph.

Not normally, but you run a small risk of getting misted with water. If you take a tour when it is raining, expect to get wet.

In winter, you'll want to time your visit for midday, when it warms up. In summer, you'll want to visit in the morning or later afternoon when it's coolest. Visiting at these times can increase your chances of seeing wildlife, but you'll likely see all kinds of critters no matter when you visit year-round.

Fantastic Experience

everglade boat tours florida

Very enjoyable and unique boat tour. Knowledgeable tour guide with a great ability to interact with, and embrace nature. Some of the experiences you get on this tour are things you will not experience with any other. They run on a smaller boat, making you feel more connected to your surroundings, and allows you to interact with the guide all the more. It’s also on a route not used by other companies so you can be sure the nature you see is unspoiled and will give you the best experience of the Everglades!

Incredible Tour

If you prefer an authentic and more intimate experience, this is the company for you. We had a fantastic trip! It was both exhilarating and educational. Our guide was very knowledgeable and keen to show off the Everglades for what it truly is – a wondrous ecosystem that we need to treasure and protect. We saw frogs, baby alligators, and birds. The scenery is breathtaking. Even our normally sulky teens were raving about it. An experience we’ll never forget, which was made all that more special by a considerate and professional guide. I recommend wholeheartedly!

-Georgina T. | TripAdvisor

Vacation Highlight

My wife, 8-year old daughter and I booked a 90-minute tour. Our guide was very engaging and knowledgable. Along the way, we stopped many times and saw all sorts of animals and plants up close including turtles and alligators (never felt dangerous). The whole experience from start to finish was stellar. Felt personal, ecologically focused, and loads of fun. It’s as wonderful as you’d expect zooming through the glorious Everglades. Will do again next time we visit and will be sure to book with these folks again. Highly recommended!

Voted "Best" Tour For Central Florida In Orlando Airboat Reviews !

Our ninety-minute ride was everything we had hoped it would been, and it was made even more enjoyable by my comfy bucket seat in the front row (and a carabiner to secure my bag). Captain Wayde was friendly to us guests and, even more importantly to me, respectful of the animal life we encountered. I think that a Marsh Landing Adventures airboat ride is an excellent way to leave one’s everyday world behind and get immersed in Central Florida nature.

Had a fantastic 1hr ride out with Capt Scott what a charmer very funny and knows his stuff for sure, had a wonderful exhilarating ride out into the swamps even had a beer at no charge if you are there in the area its a well worth trip.

We had a boat tour with Captain Chris and honestly if I had the time this holiday I would go again! It was amazing! The marsh was picturesque and full of wildlife. We were even lucky enough to see a few alligators! Our Captain was great ; very friendly and informative! An absolute 10/10.

Voted Best Everglades Tour in Miami 2010 - 2021, Airboat in Everglades offers an incredible all around tour in the outskirts of Miami. If you aren't sure what the Everglades are, they are a wet land area outside of Miami, and one of the few places that man cannot and has not built on. The swamp is run by the wildlife that inhabits it, and they will continue to do so for years to come. The Everglades are a natural sanctuary protected from humans by the conditions nature provides. Helping you discover it is Airboat in Everglades. Airboat rides are a lot much fun, and a great tour for every age. The fan powered boat tour takes you deep into the sawgrass where you can view the magnificence of the Alligator infested waters. But it's not just alligators you come across on this epic wildlife tour. Deer, bears, panthers, bobcats, racoons, unique bird species, and much more have all been spied throughout the thousands of tours this company has provided. Although it is not guaranteed to see animals, chances are you will, as Airboat in Everglades has a knack about knowing where their favorites frequent. Several Everglade tours are available in the region, but the professional and educated staff that you take the tour with escalate the experience to be had. In addition, they have packages to suit everyone. Whether you want a simple outing, or an extravagant one, this company is prepared to take care of you. …

Is this a fun ride? Does it go fast?

Yes it is fun for everyone. I didn't think it went that fast. I asked the driver and he said his boat tops out at 40mph but he typically keeps it at 25mph max for safety reasons. There are other boats out there that travel the same paths.

This was worth it, our first fan/airboat experience, and Captain Pete made it phenomenal. He is a hoot and a good storyteller. His apprentice Cruz was also really nice We learned history and development of the Everglades and got closed to gators and one simpatico bird

Everglades

The BEST Everglades airboat experience out there. Captain Pete was a blast- equal parts knowledgeable and hilarious. We saw lots of gators, birds and other natural wildlife. An experience we will not soon forget. THANK YOU!

Photo of Bob R.

Captain Pete was a blast. We saw a few gators, a turtle, and lots of native birds. Pete provides a ton of great info about the Everglades and it's clear he cares about maintaining the amazing resource. I vaguely recall traveling through the area as a kid on our trips to Florida from New England but don't remember ever taking a ride in a fan boat. It's super cool. I highly recommend it. We came in early December and the weather was perfect. Only thing we didn't see was baby gators as Pete explained a recent big tropical storm wiped out the nests. I suspect you'll see them if you come next year.

Gator

Oh myyy what an absolute BLAST this was! Capt Pete was such a hoot - kept us laughing the whole time and taught us a lot - his love for the nature of the Everglades shines through!! And we saw so many gators too - Capt Pete was like a Gator Whisperer haha! They were running a February special so we booked a private 1 1/2 hour tour as a birthday treat and it was soooo worth it! I really came away feeling like I saw a good bit of the River of Grass and all it's natural glory! During our whizzing and whipping through the little canals in the grass, we made numerous stops to see wildlife and listen to Capt Pete tell us about the nature surrounding us - so fascinating! Did you know those raised notches on a gator's back are actually bones?? I didn't!! Capt Pete even had some of the bones to show us! Booking online with them was easy and secure. We had zero issues. I had even previously emailed them with some questions while I was shopping around for the best tour company and they were very quick to respond, thorough, and friendly! The main reason I went with this company - apart from all the glowing reviews of course lol - is that they are very eco-friendly and concerned with preserving the Everglades as much as possible - they're very careful with their boats and super considerate of all the wildlife - and they don't even have one of those sad, gimmicky "animal attraction" parks like all the others where they make the animals perform - so that sold it for me. Heck they don't even have a store front haha! They have you meet up with the Captain at a Shell gas station nearby - very easy to find so no worries. Then you follow the Captain to the boat launch and off you go! Their "desk" at the Shell station is a tad hard to find - it's a tiny wooden makeshift desk right outside of the door - but it wasn't an issue bc Capt Pete found us right away! He gave us time to use the restroom and get any coffee or drinks/snacks before leaving too, which was nice. At the boat launch, there's ample parking off to the side on the gravel/grass area as well.

We had a great time today on our airboat ride. It was a one hour ride and we had fun. We were able to see gators with babies and lots of birds. We even got splashed when two male gators decided to fight. We'll be larger one did win. Really cool!! Our guide was Captain Greg. He was very knowledgeable on the area. I would highly recommend this tour group. Not sure of price differences between groups but we truly enjoyed the ride. The check in process was easy with clear direction on where we would be going and where we would be parkin

It's a bit difficult to book a ride with this company because they don't always answer the phone or return messages. Be persistent because it's worth it, especially if you get Captain Pete. Capt. Pete communicated with us prior to our trip, was early to our meeting spot, he was so fun and friendly, and he even brought water! His knowledge of The Glades was incredible and made the trip that much more interesting. I love that he's pals with some of the wildlife...he's on a first name basis with a few!

Cpt. Pete

Booked a 1.5 hr private tour. Capt Dan was knowledgable and friendly. He explained some history and facts about the ecosystem. Got up close with some big gators. It was fun and well worth the money. Just be aware this is a small business without any fancy buildings. It's the real deal.

We were in town with family and had such a great airboat experience with Airboat in Everglades! They had great customer service and called us ahead of time to confirm our tour. The gentlemen who showed us to our boat had a great sense of humor and started the tour off on a good beat! Our tour guide was super engaging and showed us around a couple of islands and we even saw some alligators. The airboat was fun and an experience we won't forget! Our guide told us all about alligators, mother gators, mating season, birds around the area and even tried to coax out some baby alligators. Super familiar with the area and rich with history, this company is a great choice to go on an airboat with family and have a unforgettable experience. Thanks Airboat in Everglades, we will be back!

Booked a private tour and Pete, or tour guid was great. We took our two young children and Pete made it fun for them and gave us a great tour!

Photo of California L.

Amazing! Book this tour! It was peaceful, well-organized- everything was smooth and super fun! Captain Pete was awesome and knows exactly where to go and has a love for the animals of the Everglades and the animals love him right back! He's super informative and funny! I highly recommend!

‘Subtle on the views,’ big on wildlife: What to know about Everglades National Park

everglade boat tours florida

From the very beginning, Everglades was not like other national parks.

“It was the first national park set aside for its biodiversity of plants and animals,” explained Allyson Gantt, spokesperson for Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks. “Before that, parks had been set aside for their dramatic mountain features or their geysers or the vistas and the views. Everglades is a lot more subtle on the views.”

The park’s website notes Everglades boasts the “largest continuous strand of sawgrass prairie in North America”  and “largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere.”

But as Gantt notes, “It doesn’t always wow people at first sight. It’s really in the details.”

Here’s what travelers should know about Everglades, the latest national park in USA TODAY’s yearlong series .

What is the Everglades famous for?

Everglades is known for its wildlife.

The park is home to nine unique habitats , hundreds of bird species, as well as endangered West Indian Manatees and Florida panthers , but its most famous residents may be alligators and crocodiles.

“South Florida is the only place in the world where you get alligators and crocodiles together,” Gantt said.

She explained it’s the southernmost range for alligators and the northernmost range for the American crocodile. And while alligators are generally a freshwater species and crocodiles usually live in salt water, she said they can both be found in brackish water within the park.

What are five other interesting facts about the Everglades?

  • It’s the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. and the third largest national park in the lower 48 states.
  • It’s so big that its three entrances are in different Florida counties: Miami-Dade, Monroe and Collier.
  • It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Wetland of International Importance .
  • It gets about 60 inches of rain a year, compared to Death Valley National Park which gets less than 2 inches annually in some areas.
  • Its nickname, River of Grass, comes from pioneering environmentalist and journalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas ’ seminal 1947 book “ The Everglades: River of Grass .” However the park’s sawgrass isn’t a “true grass”, but a part of the sedge family , according to the park.

Which part of Florida is the Everglades?

Everglades National Park spans more than 1.5 million acres of South Florida.

Visitors may enter from Miami, Homestead or Everglades City, near Naples, by land, and should note that the park’s entrances are not connected by road.

“There are a little more creative ways by boat, but not by car,” Gantt said. “And we do have a lot of people coming into the park from the Florida Keys by boat.”

The nearest major airport is Miami International Airport.

What is the best time to visit Everglades National Park?

There are two main seasons in the park: the wet season from May to November and the dry season from December through April.

The popular dry season offers cooler temperatures, lower humidity and fewer mosquitoes.

“It’s the best time for (viewing) wildlife,” Gantt said. “As water concentrates, the fish concentrate, which pulls in all of the birds and alligators and turtles, and you can just see everything in concentrated areas."

The wet season has its own perks.

“Summer’s a great time to get out on the water,” Gantt said. “We get some amazing cloud formations in the summer … I think of them as our mountains. And you see different things. It’s a little bit greener. The park looks lush because there’s water everywhere." Plus there are fewer people.

She noted the shoulder months of November and May can offer a bit of both seasons, including storms. She added that September and October are the busiest times for hurricanes, and the week between Christmas and New Year’s is the busiest time for visits.

What kinds of activities can you do in the Everglades?

Like other national parks, Everglades offers opportunities for bicycling, bird watching, camping, hiking and more.

One of the more unique activities is slough slogging , a wet guided walk through sawgrass prairies and cypress forests. It’s one of several ranger-led programs at the park. Visitors can also book airboat, kayak and tram and other tours through authorized third-party providers.

Is it safe to swim in the Everglades?

“Swimming/snorkeling is prohibited in all canals, ponds, freshwater lakes, marked channels, and boat basins inside the park,” according to the park.

Additionally, the park warns that while nature provides Everglades’ alligators and crocodiles plenty to eat and they don’t actively seek people or pets, visitors should still keep a safe distance of at least 15-20 feet from them and any wildlife.

“They look like they’re napping, basking in the sun. A lot of people think they’re statues,” Gantt said of the gators and crocodiles. “But they’re wild animals.”

Can you just drive through Everglades National Park?

A car or other form of transportation is required to visit Everglades because there is no public transportation in the massive park.

An entrance pass is also needed, except on fee-free days . Passes are good for a whole week. They cost $30 for private vehicles or vessels, $25 per motorcycle and $15 for individuals over age 15 entering on foot, bike or paddle-craft.

Free national park access for families: What to know about Every Kid Outdoors

Can you stay in Everglades National Park?

The park's only lodge will open on Nov. 1.

The new Flamingo Lodge & Restaurant replace a previous lodge and restaurant of the same name, which were damaged by hurricanes, according to the park and authorized concessioner Everglades Guest Services. The new facility features 24 elevated rooms, made from shipping containers.

Campgrounds and wilderness camp sites are also available at Everglades National Park.

Who are the Native people of the Everglades?

The historic Calusa , Tequesta , Jega and Ais tribes all had ties to the area , according to the park. As do the Seminole and Miccosukee tribes, which continue to this day.
