Cruise stocks can continue their run as long as travel demand stays strong.

After a gloomy performance during the pandemic, many cruise stocks have delivered gains for long-term investors. The cruise industry is poised to benefit from a multiyear boom, however, as Grand View Research projects that it will maintain a compound annual growth rate of 11.5% from now until 2030.

While growth was easy to find as the industry recovered from the pandemic, some cruise stocks have posted double-digit returns year to date. Many of these same companies have rising revenue and profit margins. But despite positive sentiment, many cruise stocks still have not returned to their pre-pandemic prices.

Cruise Stock Risks to Keep in Mind

With the pandemic largely in the rear-view mirror, the travel sector carries some risks. Some stocks are riskier than others, but John Engle, president of Almington Capital, says some risks specifically apply to cruise stocks.

"The biggest risk for cruise stocks is sustainable profitability," says Engle. "Many cruise operators are carrying an awful lot of debt, and it is not clear whether they will be able to service it over the long run. Thin profit margins and high debt should always be a cause for concern for investors looking at cyclical industries. Even a mild recession could be enough to devastate cruise operators' bottom lines."

An economic slowdown may be on the way. The latest U.S. jobs report, released earlier this month, revealed lower job growth than expected in July and a rising unemployment rate. Furthermore, some of the job growth numbers in previous months have been revised downward, meaning they were lower than the U.S. Labor Department initially reported.

Cruise stocks can continue their run as long as travel demand stays strong. However, any slowdowns can hurt cruise companies that carry significant debt. Cruise stock investors should carefully monitor travel demand to gauge the risk of their investments.

Investors seeking exposure to heightened travel demand may want to consider these seven top cruise stocks:

Carnival Corp. ( CCL )

Carnival's revenue and net income have continued to trend upward ever since the demand for travel returned. The company's second-quarter results revealed that sales increased by 17.7% year over year as total customer deposits reached a record $8.3 billion. That's more than $1.1 billion higher than the previous record.

Carnival also reported a record $560 million in operating income. That's nearly five times 2023 levels, and it accompanied a record $5.8 billion in second-quarter revenue.

The company raised its guidance for fiscal 2024, and its successes in 2024 should carry over into 2025, which can benefit long-term investors .

"We are very pleased with the continued acceleration of demand for 2025 and beyond, which builds upon the fantastic achievements in 2024 thus far," CEO Josh Weinstein said in Carnival's second-quarter earnings news release.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. ( RCL )

Royal Caribbean Cruises has returned to profitability with net profit margins above 20%. The cruise holding company raised full-year guidance after reporting solid results in the second quarter. Net income came in at $854 million compared to $459 million in the same quarter last year. That's an 86% year-over-year increase.

The total customer deposit balance reached $6.2 billion at the end of the second quarter. Furthermore, Royal Caribbean Cruises recently reinstated its dividend. Investors will receive a quarterly dividend of 40 cents per share. Heightened adjusted EPS guidance of $11.35 to $11.45 per share suggests a 68% year-over-year improvement.

Commentary from company President and CEO Jason Liberty suggests that business is booming.

"We have seen strength for all key products and are already taking more bookings for 2025 sailings than 2024," he states.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. ( NCLH )

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is yet another cruise operator raising its guidance, projecting full-year adjusted EBITDA of $2.35 billion, up from $2.3 billion. Norwegian also raised its full-year adjusted net income guidance from $730 million to $790 million, marking a $60 million increase.

The cruise company reported second-quarter revenue of $2.4 billion, which was 8% higher than the same quarter last year. GAAP net income came in at $163.4 million, which was a 90% year-over-year improvement.

Norwegian is on pace to achieve a double-digit adjusted return on invested capital by the end of the year. Adjusted EPS is expected to grow by approximately 120% compared to 2023.

Mark A. Kempa, executive vice president and chief financial officer, mentioned that the company has strong momentum and sees "robust demand" as it enters the second half of 2024.

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc. ( LIND )

Lindblad Expeditions is a smaller cruise stock with a $425 million market capitalization. The company reported 7% year-over-year sales growth in the first quarter. Demand continues to grow, as bookings for 2024 are 4% ahead of bookings for 2023. Available guest nights increased by 3% year over year, allowing Lindblad to accommodate more visitors.

The company's cash position increased from $187.3 million on Dec. 31 to $224.2 million as of March 31. That's a 19.7% increase. Lindblad is also in the middle of a stock buyback program. As of April 29, the company had used $23 million of the $35 million it authorized for share repurchases.

Agilysys Inc. ( AGYS )

Agilysys provides software for the hospitality industry, giving it some exposure to cruise lines. The company serves various sectors, such as hotels, resorts, stadiums and higher education.

Shares are off to a good start year to date, rising about 20% as of Aug. 5, and have more than quadrupled over the past five years.

The company delivered 13.3% year-over-year revenue growth in the first quarter of fiscal 2025. That marks its 10th consecutive record-revenue quarter. Subscription revenue, which now makes up more than half of total recurring revenue, increased by 32% year over year. As subscription revenue consists of a larger portion of the total business, Agilysys' revenue growth should accelerate. Net income attributable to shareholders soared from $1.1 million to $14.1 million year over year.

Agilysys anticipates generating $275 million to $280 million in revenue throughout fiscal 2025. Adjustable EBITDA is expected to be 16% of revenue.

OneSpaWorld Holdings Ltd. ( OSW )

OneSpaWorld Holdings provides spas, wellness and treatments on cruises and on land. Shares are up by 7.2% year to date and come with a dividend yield just above 1%. Revenue increased by 12% year over year in the second quarter, prompting the company to raise its fiscal year guidance.

The company operates health and wellness centers on 197 ships, compared to 183 ships in the same quarter last year. Net income reached $15.8 million, compared to a $3.2 million net loss in Q2 2023. OneSpaWorld Holdings anticipates 2024 revenue will range from $870 million to $890 million. The midpoint implies 10.8% year-over-year revenue growth compared to the $794 million generated in 2023.

"We remain confident in our ability to deliver strong operating and financial performance, both near term and long term, and increase value to our shareholders," CEO Leonard Fluxman said in OneSpaWorld's second-quarter earnings release.

World Kinect Corp. ( WKC )

World Kinect Corp., formerly known as World Fuel Services Corp., is an energy, commodities and services company. It has delivered over 18 billion gallons of fuel to more than 150,000 customers, including cruise lines. World Kinect's revenue was flat in the second quarter, but shares are up by 15% year to date. Diluted earnings per share soared by 277% year over year to reach $1.81.

Chairman and CEO Michael Kasbar noted that the company is facing short-term headwinds in its Land segment, but its Aviation business continues to soar. Gross profits for the aviation segment are up by 3% year over year and make up almost half of the the company's total gross profits. CFO Ira Birns said in the company's earnings release that World Kinect is focused on expense control and working capital management.

Should You Get On Board With Cruise Stocks?

Many cruise stocks have delivered rising revenue and profit margins and have raised their guidance for the rest of the year. Significant travel growth has helped cruise lines hit revenue records and achieve profitability.

However, cruise stocks have their risks. An economic slowdown can hamper their business model and make it more difficult to achieve double-digit year-over-year revenue growth.

Investors should also monitor how cruise lines cover their long-term debt and track whether the demand for travel remains elevated.

Bid Price and Ask Price

The  bid  &  ask  refers to the price that an investor is willing to buy or sell a stock. The bid is the highest amount that a buyer is currently willing to pay, whereas the ask is the lowest amount that a seller is currently willing to sell. The numbers next to the bid/ask are the “ size ”. The bid size displays the total amount of desired shares ... The data displayed in the quote bar updates every 3 seconds; allowing you to monitor prices in real-time. The  bid-ask spread  can indicate a stock’s liquidity, which is how easy it is to buy and sell in the marketplace. Often, a smaller spread suggests higher liquidity, meaning more buyers and sellers in the market are willing to negotiate. In contrast, a larger spread suggests lower liquidity, as there are fewer investors willing to negotiate. MSC Starship Club's Rob - the first-at-sea humanoid robot bartender

On Virtuosa MSC Cruises introduced the fleet's first MSC Starship Club (MSC Starliner One Bar) spaceship-themed venue served by the industry's first humanoid robot bartender - named Rob. Working on this project for 6 years (since 2015), MSC partnered with experts from companies specializing in entertainment experiences, digital solutions, robotics, automation, and interior design.

MSC Starship Club provides integrated bar-and-entertainment experiences and its interior is marked by a cold-white ceiling, a digital art wall, 3D holographic projections, a 12-seat digital (touchscreen) table for personalized interactive galactic tours.

Rob mixes and serves cocktails while entertaining the guests by moving his body, head and arms (shaking-stirring-garnishing-pouring drinks) in a natural way. The humanoid barman speaks 8 languages (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, English, French, German, Chinese, Japanese) and engages with his voice and human-like (LED face) expressions/emotions.

Between making and serving beverages, Rob interacts with the passengers, changes his facial expressions, dances, tells jokes, riddles, cosmic facts and trivia. Orders are placed in vertical digital cockpits. The drinks are served in futuristic, custom-made (MSC branded) souvenir glasses. The humanoid bartender can prepare a total of 16 "cosmic cocktails" (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) plus personalized (made-to-order) drinks using 40+ ingredients.

The vessel (STX France, Chantiers de l’Atlantique yard/hull number H34) has volume 181541 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 19610 tons, max draught 9 m. The powerplant is based on 4x Wartisla marine diesel engines (models 2x 12V46DF plus 2x 16V46DF) with combined output 64 MW (85830 hp). The propulsion is based on 2x Azipod thrusters with combined output 40 MW (53640). The registered shipowner is VISTA 4 COMPANIA NAVIERA SA, while the registered manager is MSC CROCIERE SPA.

On February 1, 2016, MSC announced a shipbuilding order for two Meraviglia Plus-class units. The newbuilds are with max capacity 6300 passengers, 200 additional cabins and longer (16 m / 50 ft) compared to Meraviglia-Class. Meraviglia-Plus vessels were delivered in October 2019 ( Grandiosa ) and April 2020 (Virtuosa).

Bookings on MSC Virtuosa cruises were opened on November 21, 2018 (for MSC Voyagers Club/loyalty program members) and on December 3 (for general customers). Sales for the inaugural cruise (November 8, 2020, from Genoa ) were opened on October 7, 2018. The promo offer was for MSC Voyagers Club members only (exclusive access through October 21 midnight), who also received a special discount (5%) in addition to their regular 5% loyalty discount. All potential customers also receive 5% Early Booking Discount (through June 3, 2019).

The vessel's construction started with the keel-laying (coin) ceremony held on February 27, 2019, at St Nazaire 's Chantiers de l’Atlantique Shipyard. The ship was rescheduled for delivery in November 2020. On the same day (Feb 27), to MSC was delivered Bellissima . During the traditional keel-laying, two shipyard employees placed 2 special-edition coins (under the hull’s first keel block) for good luck. The ceremony's godmothers were Helen Huang (MSC Cruises China's President) and Elise Guerin (shipyard's Project Manager).

The vessel was launched (floated out from drydock) on December 1, 2019, following the delivery of MSC Grandiosa  (October 31) and the steel-cutting of  MSC World Europa (also on Oct 31). Chantiers de l'Atlantique officially delivered Virtuosa to MSC on February 1, 2021. The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Executive Chairman) and his family (the wife Alexa Aponte-Vago and the children) and Laurent Castaing (shipbuilder's General Manager).

In mid-July 2021, MSC announced that Virtuosa's christening ceremony will be held at Port Rashid (Dubai UAE) . The ship's naming ceremony was held on November 27, 2021, as part of the UAE Golden Jubilee (UAE's 50th anniversary) featuring celebrations planned for the period April 6, 2021, through March 31, 2022. The ship's naming ceremony was attended by MSC's traditional godmother Sophia Loren (1934-born Italian actress) who christened 17 (out of MSC fleet's 19 ships) - each newbuild since 2003. VIP guests at the event were Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC), Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem (DP World's President and CEO), His Excellency Helal Saeed Al Marri (DTCM's Director-General/Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing), His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Saeed Rashid Al Maktoum (UAE's Vice President and Prime Minister).

Meraviglia Plus-Class ship technology

New features on Meraviglia-Plus ships include the first at sea fine-art museum (with original artworks), longer (111 m / 36 ft) indoor promenade (Galleria) and larger LED screen (95x6 m / 280x20 ft) for the pool deck's outdoor theater. The extra space in the Galleria allows two additional restaurants. MSC signed an exclusive partnership with Samsung (providing the digital technology) and Cirque du Soleil (providing live shipboard programming).

Meraviglia Plus-class ships are also the fleet's most technologically advanced, implementing the latest marine engine technologies. Their machinery includes hybrid scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems), SCR (selective catalytic reduction system converting NOx into diatomic nitrogen), most efficient waste plant, latest wastewater treatment system, superior recycling capabilities, emission-reducing, and fuel-efficient heat recovery system.

On February 1, 2019, MSC officially revealed the in-cabin digital assistant ZOE. The technology ("cruise industry first") was developed by Harman International (USA-based company, a fully-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics). Harman International has developed digital audio solutions for major corporations (Including Google, Microsoft, Amazon).

ZOE is an artificial intelligence device (voice-enabled, with advanced voice recognition software) available in all passenger staterooms. ZOE speaks 7 languages, answer cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations and bookings.

The digital device features far-field microphones, top-quality speaker, quad-core processor (for fast response times), direct phone connections (through Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its own database to answer previously unanswerable questions.

Passenger data (including itinerary/tour and shipboard preferences) is stored in the Cloud Storage system and used on the next scheduled voyage.

The device (sized ~15 cm) can be activated whenever passengers choose. A waiver must be signed to agree for their personal data to be stored.

Starting with Bellissima (2019), ZOE is now available on all newbuild MSC liners and introduced fleetwide over 2019-2024.

The cruise line industry is part of the broader travel and tourism industry, focused primarily on providing sea-based vacation experiences. Companies in the industry own and operate cruise ships in various destinations worldwide, offering a variety of itineraries and themed cruises. They also may provide other travel and vacation services. The big cruise line companies include Carnival Corp. and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

The cruise line industry has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, related travel restrictions, and other social-distancing measures. Many cruise operators ceased ship operations for many months throughout the early portion of the pandemic. Now many lines have resumed the majority of their cruise operations and bookings have soared compared to 2019, before the pandemic. However, additional issues hamper the industry: cruise companies have struggled to hire back employees, which has led to cancellations and reduced on-board amenities.

All pure-play cruise line stocks available to U.S. investors are underperforming the broader market, having provided total returns below the -12.1% total return of the Russell 1000 Index over the past 12 months. There is no specific benchmark index for the cruise industry. The market performance number above and all statistics in the tables below are as of Oct. 4, 2022. Below, we look at the top three cruise line stocks with the best value, fastest growth, and best performance.

There are just four pure-play cruise line companies easily available to U.S. investors, but we look at them in our usual style. Because the entire industry has suffered losses in recent quarters, the value section below will be based on price-to-sales ratio rather than the usual price-to-earnings ratio (P/E Ratio) . Also, the revenue growth rates in the growth section further below are abnormally high because revenue in the most recent quarter is being compared to extremely low baseline levels in the year-ago quarter as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. Even relatively small absolute value changes in revenue have resulted in enormous percentage changes.

These are the cruise line stocks with the lowest 12-month trailing price-to-sales (P/S) ratio . For companies in early stages of development or industries suffering from major shocks, this can be substituted as a rough measure of a business's value. A business with higher sales could eventually produce more profit when it achieves (or returns to) profitability. The price-to-sales ratio shows how much you're paying for the stock for each dollar of sales generated.

  • Carnival Corp.:  Carnival operates the world’s largest fleet of cruise ships. The company also owns travel-related properties such as hotels and vacation destinations. Carnival reported Q2 2022 financial results on Sept. 30. Its net loss narrowed sharply to $770 million from $2.8 billion in the prior year quarter as total revenue rose nearly eight-fold year-over-year ( YOY ). The company said it was benefiting from soaring bookings, with 95% of Carnival's capacity serving guests as of Sept. 30. The company said it expects eight of its nine cruise brands to have their full fleet serving guests by the end of the year.
  • Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc.: Lindblad Expeditions owns and operates cruise ships and provides expedition cruising and travel services. The company offers both sea-based and land-based expeditions. Lindblad Expeditions released financial results for Q2 2022 on Aug. 2. Its net loss narrowed to $28.6 million compared to $35.7 million in Q2 2021. Total revenue surged nearly six-fold as the company ramped up service globally on all ten of its owned cruise ships.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.: Norwegian Cruise Line operates a fleet of passenger cruise ships. In addition, the company offers itineraries and theme cruises. On Aug. 9, Norwegian Cruise Line released its Q2 2022 financial report. Its net loss shrank to $509.3 million from $717.8 million in the prior year quarter as revenue rose dramatically to $1.2 billion from $4.4 million in Q2 2021.

These are the cruise line stocks with the highest  year-over-year (YOY)  sales growth for the most recent quarter. Rising sales can help investors to identify companies that are able to grow revenue organically or through other means and to find growing companies that have not yet reached profitability. In addition, accounting factors that may not reflect the overall strength of the business can significantly influence  earnings per share (EPS) . However, sales growth can also prove potentially misleading about the strength of a business because growing sales on money-losing businesses can be harmful if the company has no plan to reach profitability.

  • Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.: See above for company description.
  • Royal Caribbean Group:  Royal Caribbean Group, formerly known as Royal Caribbean Cruises, operates a fleet of vessels in the cruise vacation industry. On Aug. 30, Royal Caribbean announced that it will offer high-speed internet to passengers throughout its entire cruise fleet through SpaceX's Starlink, a high-speed internet service. The installation is scheduled to be completed by the end of Q1 2023 and is expected to sharply improve historically poor internet service while cruise vessels are at sea.
  • Carnival Corp.:  See above for company description.

These are the cruise line stocks that had the smallest declines in total return over the past 12 months out of the companies we looked at.

  • Lindblad Expeditions Holdings Inc.: See above for company description.
  • Royal Caribbean Group.: See above for company description.

Shareholder Perks: A little-known benefit of holding cruise line stocks is that they offer shareholder perks. For instance, investors who hold at least 100 Carnival shares are entitled to a $250 onboard credit for cruises that are 14 days or longer, a $100 credit for cruises between 7 and 13 days, and a $50 credit for sailings of six days or less. Similarly, both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line offer comparable shareholder benefits. To claim, investors need to provide their details and proof of ownership, such as a shareholder proxy card or a copy of a current brokerage statement.

Pent-Up Demand: Cruise line companies have seen a bounce back in demand as customers book cruises they had put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. This positions operators in the sector to boost profits in upcoming quarters since most have their fleets back at total capacity and removed COVID vaccination requirements. Carnival reported in June that its forward bookings were at the higher end of historical ranges, while Royal Caribbean said in July that 2023 bookings in all quarters are currently booked within historical ranges at record pricing. Moreover, Royal Caribbean expects to return to profitability in the third quarter of 2022. As a result, cruise line stock prices may be buoyed in the months ahead as investors bake in improving earnings.

High Debt Load: Cruise line companies racked up substantial debt over the past two years as they attempted to stay afloat during the pandemic. Carnival carried total debt of $36.39 billion at the end of the second quarter—more than a three-fold increase from $11.5 billion in 2019. Royal Caribbean's debt ballooned from $11.73 billion to $23.85 billion over the same period, while Norwegian Cruise Line's debt grew from $6.8 billion to $13.24 billion. With inflation leading to higher fuel costs and rising interest rates , these elevated debt levels will become increasingly difficult to service, increasing the risk of share price dilution through further capital raisings .

Future Pandemics: Cruise Line stocks sank during the pandemic, with the sector facing multiple challenges from bad publicity, no-sail orders, and a sluggish recovery. In the early stages of the health crisis, reports of major outbreaks spreading onboard put downward pressure on the group. Selling accelerated as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued and extended no-sail orders. Although forward bookings have bounced back in 2022, sales sit significantly below pre-pandemic levels. For example, both Carnival and Royal Caribbean reported respective revenue for the June quarter that came in at 42% and 22% below the corresponding period in 2019. These challenges remind investors that future pandemics remain a risk for cruise line stocks.

Largest cruise line companies by market cap

This is the list of the largest cruise lines by market capitalization. A cruise line is a company that operates cruise ships and markets cruises to the public. Only the top cruise lines are shown in this list and cruise lines such as Costa Cruises, or MSC cruises that are not publicly traded are excluded. The ranking and the market cap data shown on this page are updated daily.

What is the market capitalization of a company?

The market capitalization sometimes referred as Marketcap, is the value of a publicly listed company. In most cases it can be easily calculated by multiplying the share price with the amount of outstanding shares.

Benefits of Owning Cruise Stock: Perks of 3 Cruise Companies Compared

J. Souza

Did you know there are perks for owning stock in a publicly traded cruise line?  How does some onboard credit sound?

With 3 cruise companies to choose from you can lock in some onboard credit just for owning a certain amount of shares in one of these companies.

Two ships in Costa Maya - Allure of the Seas and Carnival Celebration(1)

*This article has been updated from its original publishing date to reflect recent changes.

In this post we will cover what perks you get for owning stock in these cruise companies and the slight differences in each program.

While the price of a stock will fluctuate throughout the year, one advantage to owning stock in a cruise line is the onboard credit value stays relatively constant.

I say “relatively” because cruise lines do tend to change their shareholder benefits from time to time and there may even be restrictions added to certain situations.

Note: This is not financial advice and we are not investment advisors.  You should talk with your own financial advisor and assess the risks of buying or owning stock in any company.

What 3 cruise companies offer onboard credit perks?

Not every cruise line is publicly traded in the U.S. stock market.  Some, like MSC Cruises, are privately owned.

But, the majority of cruise ships in the world, sail under one of these 3 parent companies that ARE publicly traded and invest-able:

Carnival Corporation & PLC

Royal caribbean group, norwegian cruise line holdings ltd.

If you don’t see your favorite cruise line in this list above, not to worry.   Many cruise lines are owned by these “big 3” parent companies and we have detailed this below.  In fact, a large majority of all cruise lines fall under one of these brands.

  • Holland America Line
  • P&O Cruises
  • P&O Cruises (Australia)
  • Costa Cruises
  • AIDA Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean International
  • Silversea Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Note : Not every cruise brand may qualify for the perks of its parent company, and it’s important to check with your cruise line first.  For instance, currently passengers on Silversea cannot benefit from the ownership of Royal Caribbean stock (RCL).

How many shares do you have to own to get the perks?

The perks and requirements for each of these cruise companies is very similar.  For each of them you must own 100 shares of stock in the company to get onboard credit benefits.

Benefits of cruise stock ownership compared

Now, let’s dig a little deeper and see exactly how much onboard credit you receive for each cruise company.  The requirements for each company are only slight different based on the duration of itineraries.

Also, keep in mind that these offers can change or updated at any time at the discretion of the cruise companies.

Carnival Celebration cruise ship in port

Requirements: Must own at least 100 shares in the company (NYSE:CCL)

  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 14 days or longer: $250
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 7 to 13 days: $100
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 6 days or less:  $50

In order to receive the onboard credit you have to ask for it and prove you own shares in the company.

I just did this for my Carnival Celebration cruise recently.  Just request proof of stock ownership from your brokerage company and send it to the email address on this page .

According to Carnival’s shareholder document, requests for the onboard credit must be made at least 3 weeks before a sailing date.  If using a travel agent you should do this at least 4 weeks before.

Restrictions :  Employees, travel agents cruising at travel agent rates, interline rates, tour conductors or anyone cruising on a reduced-rate or complimentary basis are excluded from this offer.

Also, the onboard credit is not transferable.  In other words, once you prove you own the stock in Carnival the onboard credit is applied to the cabin you are staying in.

The credit cannot be exchanged for cash and cannot be used in casinos or applied to gratuities onboard.

Read more about the stock ownership onboard credit program or learn how to apply with Carnival here .

Requirements: Must own at least 100 shares in the company (NYSE:RCL)

  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings 14 or more nights: $250
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 6 to 13 nights: $100
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 5 nights or less: $50
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on a World Cruise: $1,000

These onboard credits can be made on two Royal Caribbean brands including Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises.

Royal Caribbean stipulates that your request for onboard credit must be in their office between 2-3 weeks before your sailing date.  This means you should make the request 3-4 weeks before your cruise just in case.

Restrictions :  All Galapagos sailings are excluded from this onboard credit program.

Also, the onboard credit  cannot be redeemed for chartered sailings or complimentary sailings.

The perk applies only to the cabin in which a shareholder (with a minimum of 100 shares) is sailing. The credit is applied per cabin, assuming double occupancy. Only one credit can be claimed per cabin on any given voyage. If shares are jointly held, 100 shares are required for each credit request on any one voyage.

Credit given at the start of the voyage cannot be used for charges incurred on the voyage or for activities booked in advance. Any credit remaining after the final night of the voyage will be forfeited and cannot be exchanged for cash.

If you own at least 100 shares of stock in NYSE:RCL you can request your onboard credit with Royal Caribbean here .

Requirements: Must own at least 100 shares in the company (NYSE:NCL)

  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 15 days or more: $250
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 7 to 14 days: $100
  • Onboard credit per stateroom on sailings of 6 days or less: $50

Currently this offer can be used on sailings with all 3 of NCL’s cruise lines: Norwegian Cruise Line , Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

Proof of stock ownership must be provided to Norwegian at least 15 days prior to the sailing date and this can be done through mail or email.  See the link below to start this process.

Restrictions: This offer cannot be applied to chartered sailings.

If you’re looking to get onboard credit for booking multiple staterooms or suites and you hold shares jointly, you’ll need to have at least 100 shares per room booked.

If you’re a single traveler paying 200% of the fare, you’ll be able to get the full value of the credit. Just keep in mind that any unused credit won’t be refunded and can’t be exchanged for cash. This benefit can’t be transferred to others and doesn’t apply to certain special rates, like employee discounts or cruises booked through travel agents.

If you own at least 100 shares of NYSE:NCL stock and would like to make a request for onboard credit in your upcoming cruise you can use the Shareholder Benefit Request Form here .

What’s the biggest perk of onboard credit through stock ownership?

things that surprise first time cruisers

If you’re a long term investor and you go on a lot of cruises, this should be a pretty simple decision.

The biggest perk is that you can get the onboard credit for every cruise you take in the future (provided the program remains in place).  If you take 4 cruises a year that can easily amount to $400 total on 7-night sailings.

The stock price of cruise lines has dropped dramatically over the last few years but is still fairly volatile, and we aren’t here to predict the future about where the price could go.

At the time of the writing of this article it would cost just over $1,700 to buy 100 shares of Carnival Corp. stock.

I just looked up some prices for Carnival cruises out of Miami and found a few deals on Carnival Magic in 2024 for about $384 per person without taxes and fees.  This is a 7-night cruise and would be eligible for $100 of onboard credit.

That’s not a bad perk in my book.

What can you use your OBC (Onboard Credit) for?

You can use that onboard credit for just about anything you can pay for on a cruise ship.  Things like spa treatments, massages, facials, and hair treatments can quality.  Or you can use it for specialty dining restaurants or even for a purchase in the gift shop.

Some things you cannot use your onboard credit for would be things like gratuities and gambling in the casino.

Again, none of this is financial advice and you really should talk with your financial advisor before buying stock in a cruise company just to take advantage of onboard credit.

If you do take a lot of cruises throughout the year and would like to find a way to supplement some of your onboard spending, this might be something worth looking into.

Also, keep in mind that cruise companies were hit hard by shutdowns over the last couple years and their financial stability is in question.  We don’t know how long programs like this will be in effect.

It seems like all three lines require 100 shares. The rewards are also quite similar. Right now, RCL stock is ~$64 a share, NCLH is ~$15 while CCL is ~$11. Thus, Carnival-owned lines are the easiest to take part in this, while RCL will take ~6x more effort for the same amount of rewards 😉
