Session tracks, a documentary and exclusives from the band’s archives are also set for release

Starsailor are set to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their ‘Silence Is Easy’ album with a UK tour and a host of new material.

The album – originally released in 2003 – was the second studio album to be released by the English band, and a longtime favourite among fans. Now, celebrating 20 years since its release, the indie veterans have announced a new UK tour, which will see them play the album in its entirety.

Set for this winter, the newly-announced dates will see the four-piece perform in cities including Notting, Glasgow, Sheffield and Manchester. First, they will kick off with a performance in Norwich on November 24, taking place at The Waterfront. From there, the band will play a total of nine shows across the country before closing at The Brook in Southampton.

A performance at London’s Electric Ballroom is also scheduled for December 2. Tickets will be available here from this Friday (March 31) – see the full list of dates below.

“We’re really excited to celebrate our second album ‘Silence Is Easy’ with you all,” said frontman James Walsh. “It’s going to be great to bring album tracks such as ‘Telling Them’ & ‘White Dove’ out of the woodwork to go alongside crowd favourites ‘Four To The Floor’ & ‘Silence Is Easy’… We’re extremely grateful that you’ve taken this album to your hearts and it’s stood the test of time.”

Alongside the newly announced string of UK tour dates, Starsailor will also be unveiling a host of new material to celebrate the occasion.

This comes as the 20th-anniversary edition of the album will be released – including exclusive footage and outtakes from the band’s archives. Session tracks will also be incorporated into the upcoming release, as will a new documentary Silence Was Easy – which lifts the lid on the Spector episode.

As per a new press release, Starsailor also have some new material in the works and are expected to release new music in 2024.

Starsailor

Back in 2021, Walsh spoke about his infamous spat with Oasis in 2002 . Reflecting on the feud in NME ’s Does Rock ‘N’ Roll Kill Braincells?! , the frontman recalled how he got into a row with Noel Gallagher backstage at the T In The Park festival.

“It was a mad time and the only period in our lives when we were all over the tabloids, and it was a fuss over nothing,” he said, explaining why the incident emerged.

“We’ve done gigs with Liam since,” he added. “I’m not sure how Noel feels about it, but we’ve definitely made up with Liam anyway!”

That same year also saw Starsailor celebrate two decades since their debut album, ‘Love Is Here’. To mark the event, the band announced a 20th-anniversary edition of the album , which featured previously unreleased covers, rarities and re-recorded tracks. They also launched a UK tour for the occasion.

STARSAILOR announce Spring 2024 tour & share new single ‘Heavyweight’

Starsailor

Last month, STARSAILOR announced their return with “Where The Wild Things Grow”, the title track of their first album in six years, produced by Rick McNamara and set for release on 22nd March 2024. Today, they announce a March / April 2024 Tour and share “Heavyweight.”

Showcasing some extraordinary prog-infused guitar histrionics, “Heavyweight” is a sure-fire single and a straight-up love song seen through the lens of boxing – punch drunk love! Heavyweight means – according to Walsh – “this isn’t a fleeting thing, and we’re in it for the long run, the ups and downs, and it will feel heavy sometimes.”

Formed in and around Wigan at the start of the millennium and featuring James Walsh (guitar, vocals), James Stelfox (bass), Barry Westhead (keyboards) and Ben Byrne (drums), Starsailor have released five albums to date, including Love Is Here in 2001, Silence Is Easy in 2003, On The Outside in 2005, All The Plans in 2009 and All This Life in 2017. A greatest hits compilation entitled Good Souls: The Greatest Hits surfaced in 2015, featuring all ten of their UK Top Forty singles to date, including their biggest hit, “Silence Is Easy”, which reached No.9 in 2003.

On the new album, Starsailor canter through a record of astonishing complexity: “Dead On The Money” – “a song about being flat broke but full of hope, although I like the fact it means exactly right too. Like knowing deep down you’re on the right track even though recovery is slow” – which kicks things off, will remind you of Chameleons, Supergrass, and I Threw A Brick Through A Window-era U2; the folk-tinged “Flowers” (featuring some stunning lap steel from Spritualized’s Tony ‘Doggen’ Foster) was inspired by a documentary about a flower seller in Aleppo who “just kept setting up his stall, despite the bombs going off around him, dedicated to providing a tiny haven of beauty during such a devastating time” ; “Enough (I Should Be Home By Now)” has a wonderful, rolling, mid-Atlantic quality reminiscent of the Eagles’ finer moments; and “After The Rain” – (featuring slide guitar from the aforementioned Foster, “the most joyous song to put together, just a lovely process” – was inspired by The Band, Crosby Stills and Nash, and the Laurel Canyon scene.

Themes of love and hope to pop up all over the record: on “Hard Love”, Walsh muses on the simplicity of single life when compared to the complications and range of emotions of a relationship – spoiler alert, he comes down on the side of the relationship, if it’s with the right person – whilst “Hanging In The Balance” is about that delicate time, “the early stages of a relationship when it’s starting to get real and you’re on the precipice between it becoming something life-changing or you both going your separate ways.”

Best of all is “Where The Wild Things Grow Itself”, which was released last month. “I wrote it in my old flat at night,” says Walsh which has that slightly uneasy, otherworldliness reminiscent of those early Bowie or Pink Floyd recordings. “I could hear the pipes creaking. I was thinking of Maurice Sendak and Stanley Donwood’s Radiohead art. There’s an early Ed Harcourt song called ‘Beneath The Heart Of Darkness’ that’s an influence too. The brooding otherworldly darkness.”

Where The Wild Things Grow – the album – features additional guitar work by Tony “Doggen” Foster from Rick McNamara and Travis’s Andy Dunlop, as well as backing vocals by Lucy Joules (Sam Smith). Rick, himself, who produced the album, is now unofficially ‘the fifth Starsailor’, or, as Walsh puts it, “another creative in the room who really cares about the songs and pushes us to our limits.”

Over the past two decades, Starsailor have been compared to everyone from Neil Young and Van Morrison to Wigan compatriots, The Verve – Walsh cites the latter’s homecoming show in front of 33,000 people at Haigh Hall on 24th May 1998 as a revelatory experience – although, concurrently, perhaps we should add Tim and Jeff Buckley, as well as Arcade Fire to that increasingly debatable list. Whatever your pronouncements on the matter, one thing’s for sure: Where The Wild Things Grow bears up to candid analysis, repeat listens, proving it to reveal layer upon layer of casual observations and quiet reflections on life being loved and love being lived. It’s also an album that has no right to be as good as it is – and yet here it is.

Starsailor are an indie-rock band known for their anthemic pop/rock.

Last month, they announced their return with 'Where The Wild Things Grow', the title track of their first album in six years, produced by Rick McNamara. Alongside the new album release the band announce Where The Wild Things Grow Tour.

Formed in Wigan by music students James Walsh (vocals/guitar), James Stelfox (bass), and Ben Byrne (drums), the band went through several guitar-heavy embryonic line-ups before the arrival of keyboardist Barry Westhead (keyboards) cemented their sound.

Where The Wild Things Grow – the album - features additional guitar work Tony “Doggen” Foster from Rick McNamara and Travis’s Andy Dunlop, as well as backing vocals by Lucy Joules (Sam Smith). Rick, himself, who produced the album, is now unofficially ‘the fifth Starsailor’, or, as Walsh puts it, “another creative in the room who really cares about the songs and pushes us to our limits.”

Over the past two decades, Starsailor have been compared to everyone from Neil Young and Van Morrison, to Wigan compatriots, The Verve – Walsh cites the latter’s homecoming show in front of 33,000 people at Haigh Hall on 24th May 1998 as a revelatory experience. Where The Wild Things Grow bears up to candid analysis, repeat listens proving it to reveal layer upon layer of casual observations and quiet reflections on life being loved, and love being lived. It’s also an album that has no right to be as good as it is - and yet here it is.

Over 14s only. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Support is from upcoming singer-songwriter, and Noel Gallagher favourite, Andrew Cushin .

Formed of Ben Byrne (drums), James Stelfox (bass), James Walsh (guitar, lead vocals) and Barry Westhead (keyboards), the original members met whilst studying at college near Wigan, England. Taking their name from a Tim Buckley album, the group took shape in early 2000, finding their sound through live shows. After recording their first demo, record companies took note of the act, with Starsailor finding several offers on the table that summer, choosing to sign with EMI.

Following an NME-sponsored tour, Starsailor released their debut single, “Fever,” in 2001, finding widespread critical acclaim in the process. Hailed as ‘Britain’s best new band,’ their first headline UK tour sold out quickly, before a second single, “Good Souls” appeared in April. It was not until September that their debut album, “Love Is Here,” appeared, bolstered by the success of their first Top Ten single, “Alcoholic.”

Tours followed, with Starsailor enjoying the critical acclaim that their debut received. Their second record, “Silence Is Easy,” took several years of work, finding difficulties with original producer, Phil Spector. It eventually arrived in 2004, reaching Gold status yet failing to match the success of its predecessor. Their third, 2006’s “On The Outside,” also failed to make the same impact, although it was a return to form with the quality of its songs.

In 2009, they enlisted Rolling Stones guitarist, Ron Wood, to help contribute to their fourth record, “All the Plans” released the same year. After the record, Starsailor went on an indefinite hiatus, not returning until 2014. They since reunited and performed at several festivals, including Summer in the City in the UK and Rock Zottegem in Belgium.

I saw Starsailor a few years back when they were an opening act. I'm really not much of a British band fan - it's nothing personal, I've just never liked that sound.

Starsailor is a bit different though. They've sort of embraced a more American sound. While this may put a lot of people off, I really enjoyed it. Their British roots still came through, especially on songs like Good Souls.

I was surprised when the lead singer broke out a harmonica for one of the songs. It was a totally unexpected bit that worked really well with the song. The set was rather short - they were just an opening act - but they did a lot with the time they had.

Overall, I really enjoyed the set. I think they could be a real standout band. I'd like to check out a full concert from them sometime. I think it would be a lot of fun. Many of the people in the crowd seemed to get more into the set as it went along, appearing a little confused at first at the hybrid sound. It was unique and fresh, which in this day and age, is a rarity. A very good opening act that could be a lot more.

Starsailor are by far the best British band from my school days and ive followed them since.

They should off headlined Penn fest (2018) as they were amazing and put on an amazing show. The 15th anniversary for The silence is easy album at Shepard’s bush was the best Live show I’ve ever seen and last month (March 2020) they blew the roof off at the Victoria warehouse in Manchester supporting Embrace.

Starsailor are true to themselves and always put 109% into their gigs, James’s voice is just amazing and the band are just awesome, can’t wait for the next gig. Viva la Starsailor.

Great night at the Shepherds Bush Empire for the 15th anniversary of Silence is Easy. Played the album start to finish and then finished off with a string of everyone's favourites. You could tell the band were enjoying themselves, just playing because they wanted to, not to promote anything. It was a pleasure to be there to share it with them.
