Why are Swifties trading friendship bracelets? Inside the nostalgic trend

For most people, the last time they tried to thread craft beads onto plastic string was at summer camp. Swifties have changed that.

Beaded friendship bracelets are now a ubiquitous sighting at Taylor Swift's Eras Tour shows, sported by fans and celebrities alike during, and often after, the concert.

In a trend reminiscent of childhood toy swaps, fans trade bracelets with each other at shows, and many Swifties have displayed bracelet collections that stretch all the way from their wrists to their elbows.

Here's everything you need to know about the Eras Tour friendship bracelet trend and how it began.

Where did the Taylor Swift bracelet trend come from?

The friendship bracelet trend among Swifties is inspired by lyrics from a song on Swift's 2022 album "Midnights."

"So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it," Swift sang in her nostalgic anthem "You're On Your Own, Kid."

Her fans took that suggestion very seriously.

Friendship bracelets have been a key element of the Eras Tour since the first few shows, says Gabby Deimeke, a longtime Swiftie.

Deimeke, who has been a fan of Swift since her very first album, attended the Arlington, Texas, Eras Tour concert in April.

A few weeks before the show, she saw videos on TikTok of other Swifties making beaded friendship bracelets to wear to the Eras Tour.

Many fans spelled out words, lyrics, album titles or phrases on the bracelets, such as the names of Swift's cats (Meredith, Olivia and Benjamin) or memes associated with Swift ("no it's becky").

Deimeke began making bracelets to wear and share at the show and chronicled her process on TikTok. She estimates that at the time of the concert, she had made around 50 bracelets.

"I wanted to make extras because I wanted to just give them away for people that didn’t have any bracelets," she says.

She bonded with other fans over their bracelet collections.

"When we were waiting in line to go in, I started chatting with people," Deimeke says. "Everyone was wearing them on their wrist, so then you’re like, 'Oh, you want to trade? Which ones do you have? What eras do you like?' And then you kind of pick out a personal bracelet depending on if they have a favorite song or a favorite era from Taylor."

"It’s also a good way to just start a conversation, so you can meet other fans and chat about where you guys are from, or what song you’re excited to see," she continues. "I just thought it was a blast."

She shared a video on TikTok of the bracelet trading scene at the concert.

After the show, Deimeke still had leftover bracelets, so she began trading bracelets by mail with other fans. For her, trading bracelets with other fans was an important part of her concert experience.

"I would say go for it," she says. "Put a couple of fun, little phrases on there. And just be open minded and go meet new people and see what the experience brings."

"It’s a great way to have that icebreaker and have a conversation starter to meet new people."

Even celebrities are trading bracelets

Swift's close friend Selena Gomez collected a stack of beaded bracelets on her wrist after attending the Eras Tour show in Los Angeles.

The singer and actress posted a pic of her bracelets on her Instagram story.

"Thank you to the fans that traded with me," she wrote over the photo.

Jennifer Garner showed off two massive stacks of bracelets on the second slide of her sweet Instagram tribute to Swift and opener Gracie Abrams.

The actress praised Swift's "generosity of spirit, ferocity and stamina" and gave a shoutout in the caption to "everyone who stopped by to bring a bracelet and say hello."

To Deimeke, the bracelets represent Swift’s ethos.

“The whole Eras Tour has this element of nostalgia and girlhood,” she says. “Making the bracelets is just like a celebration of that, and a celebration of us getting older, and kind of going through that as Taylor has gotten older and made new albums for different phases of your life. I think that’s kind of what the record and what the bracelets are a representation of.”

Celebs are now in on the trend inspired by Swift’s song “You’re On Your Own, Kid” from Midnights.

Aside from Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour merch (especially that blue crewneck sweater), there’s something special that fans are taking home from each tour stop as souvenirs: friendship bracelets. Even stars like Jennifer Lawrence accepted the wrist gifts from fans at Swift’s May 14 show in Philadelphia.

It’s been a long time coming, but Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is finally here. Now that you’ve settled on your concert ‘fit, you might be wondering what essentials you should bring to the Eras Tour The Eras Tour is like a mini Swift-themed music festival, and you want to be prepared for anything and everything that may happen on the day of your show.

By just looking at Swift’s Eras Tour setlist alone, you know that a portable charger is necessary to make it through the over three-hour show. Actually, Austin Ashburn ( @austinashburn4 ) who attended the second night of The Eras Tour in Glendale told Elite Daily that from start to finish, the show is “around five hours long.” That’s “not even including the car rides and line waits.” You’ll want to be prepared for a full-day adventure with everything you need in your bag. Speaking of which, most stadiums have very strict bag policies. Finding the right purse or backpack to match your Eras outfit is essential, but you want to make sure it’s actually one you can bring into the venue and get past security.

To help with packing for the Eras Tour, here’s everything you may want to bring to the Taylor Swift concert. There are even a few items you never would have thought to include on this list.

Ashburn said the biggest Eras Tour essential is a portable phone charger. Even if you charge it beforehand, it may not last the entire day. Swift’s set is over three hours long, but you also have two opening acts and merch lines to wait in. If you’re using your phone the entire time, you’ll be draining your battery.

Bring a portable charger (or two) along with your charging cable, so that you have a backup. This power bank from Amazon has nearly 62,000 5-star reviews, with many raving about how quickly it brought their battery back to life.

This is definitely something you may not be thinking to include in your bag, but Ashburn recommends bringing sunglasses. He argued that “most of the shows are taking place in the summertime,” and said he regretted not bringing them to the Glendale show.

For instance, Swifties going as her Red era may want to wear these heart-shaped sunglasses ($11) that she wore in the “22” music video. She also wore yellow heart-shaped sunglasses ($7) in the “You Need To Calm Down” video, but any color would do as long as it matches your era’s shade.

Many Swifties are raving about Loop earplugs on TikTok after wearing them at the first two shows of the Eras Tour. TikToker @__e.rxn said she “1000% needed” them for the show. They not only helped to protect her ears from the loud music and fans screaming, but they also helped with her anxiety walking through the large crowds in the stadium.

Similar to the clear bag rule, a lot of stadiums are becoming cashless as well, which means that you’ll want to bring a card if you want to purchase any Eras Tour merch at the venue. To make sure your credit cards are safe in your clear bag, it’s a good idea to get a small wallet. If you’re going bagless, a cute Eras Tour card holder to attach to your phone is a stylish idea.

If you happen to be a Capital One member, be sure to put your credit card in your wallet as well. One Swiftie, Lauren ( @laurennnp ), got upgraded to floor seats the day of the show by taking a video at one of the stadium’s Capital One booths, which had the elevator from the Taylor Swift Capital One commercial . Lauren also argued that Chapstick is an essential item to throw into your Eras Tour bag. After all, you definitely don’t want to have chapped lips while trying to sing all 10 minutes of “All Too Well.” Since Swift is known for her iconic red lips, you may want to get something that’s tinted red. She would definitely approve of having her BFF Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty lip balm in your collection.

TikToker @brittany.tucciaro’ s tips for the Eras Tour include bringing comfy shoes . You may have found the perfect glitter boots to pair with your Fearless ‘fit, but you have to remember the show is pretty long. If you can, pack some sandals or these Silky Toes foldable shoes that TikToker @jizellemaia recommends putting on after you snap all your pics for Insta. An even better idea is to just choose comfortable shoes from the start, like Keds .

Another practical recommendation of what to bring in your Eras Tour bag from @jizellemaia is hand sanitizer. If you plan on eating, you might not have time to stop by the bathroom to wash your hands — especially if the lines are long. Having a pocket-sized sanitizer in your bag will come in handy.

Bath & Body Works has amazing scents and some cute holders that you can clip to the outside of your bag to save some space. You can also find a holder to match your era, like a gold glitter one for Fearless , pink hearts for Lover , and purple butterflies for Speak Now .

Consider Your Lodging and Transportation Choices First

Before buying a ticket, be sure that you will have accommodations available. If you can book a hotel that’s within walking distance of a stadium and know the area is safe, that is ideal. Otherwise, check bus and train schedules for the night of your venue, then look at hotels that might be close to bus or train stops.

With tens of thousands of fellow concertgoers leaving at the same time, transportation can get tricky. If you book a room that’s farther from the venue, try to get a rental car instead of vying for a taxi or rideshare after the show. If you do that, just be sure parking will be available. You may need to buy a parking pass from the venue.

Also be aware that hotel room prices skyrocket when Swift is in town because there is such a high demand. If you are renting a car and don’t mind a longer drive, you can save a lot of money by booking a hotel room that’s a longer drive from the venue.

Make The Friendship Bracelets

It’s easy to learn how to make friendship bracelets. I had never dabbled in making jewelry before, but now I find great joy in creating friendship bracelets. I created dozens and handed them to fans at The Eras Tour movie.

To make friendship bracelets, I start by choosing the colors I want and which word or phrase I want the bracelet to express. Then I choose colorful beads and pick out all the necessary letter beads.

Next, I cut off elastic string. I find it’s best to use Stretch Magic elastic string because of its strength and durability. To make the bracelets, I cut off a piece of string that’s twice as long as I need so that there is ample room for cutting and tying multiple knots.

Then I tape one end of the string to my workspace, string the beads I have set aside until I feel like the bracelet is complete. Being careful to not let any of the beads slide off the string, I then wrap it around my wrist to see how it fits and then consider whether I am making the bracelet for a wrist that’s likely larger or smaller than mine. (Also, with elastic string, there’s room for a flexible fit.) I adjust accordingly.

As a last step, I make four to five knots in the string to tie off the bracelet. Many fans choose to add a dab of fabric glue to the end of the knot, but I found that got really messy and wasn’t necessary if you make multiple knots. Then I tuck the knots into one of the beads so that it doesn’t show on the bracelet. Then the bracelet is concert-ready!

Keep in mind that there are a lot of other ways to make friendship bracelets that are for more involved and creative that mine. And, if the idea of making friendship bracelets doesn’t sound fun to you, don’t worry. You can buy premade friendship bracelets on Etsy. Some Etsy shops like RainFoxx13 and BonniesBracelet have elaborate, beautiful friendship bracelets that you may want to keep for yourself. Others sell packs of friendship bracelets in bulk.

If you don’t want to trade friendship bracelets, that’s okay, too. The Swiftie community is accepting and supportive, and you still may get several bracelets as gifts.

What To Wear To The Eras Tour

There are no rules for what you should wear to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour beyond the guidelines from the venue. Some fans go casual, and others choose to dress to the nines for the show. Some fans choose to wear merch from Taylor Swift’s official store . Many fans choose to dress up in costumes inspired by Swift’s songs and lyrics.

With the release of The Tortured Poets Department and its video “Fortnight,” some fans are choosing to imitate some of her looks from the video. Others are wearing their interpretation of the incredible costumes she wears during The Eras Tour concert. Others look at past eras for inspiration. You are likely to see every era represented in fan costumes at a show.

What You Should Bring To The Eras Tour In Europe

Wilkinson advised me that the number one thing to bring is a portable phone charger. If you plan on recording video and taking photos, your phone’s battery may die down quickly, and a phone charger can ensure you can keep capturing the memories all night.

Earplugs are a good idea if you’re sensitive to loud noise. If you’re bringing kids along, they are a must. They ensure you can enjoy the music while protecting your ears.

Bring along a cardigan or jacket. Layering is a good idea for a concert during the summer. Although it may be hot in the stadium, you might be chilly on the way home from the show.

You can’t go wrong bringing along hand sanitizer and a travel pack of tissues. Even if you can get through “All Too Well” without tearing up, you may cry at the sheer excitement of the experience. It can be intense in the best way.

If you have tickets that are far back, bring along binoculars to see close-up details.

What To Avoid At The Eras Tour

Don’t come to the stadium with a big bag. If you haven’t attended stadium concerts before, you may not know that you need to carry a clear bag if you want to bring a purse. It also has to fit within the measurements allowed in the stadium, so you can’t just buy a clear backpack and expect to get in the show. Check with your show’s venue to make sure you follow their rules for what you can bring.

Tickets have already gone on sale for the rest of the currently confirmed dates of The Eras Tour for 2024. However, you can get secondhand tickets from resellers. It’s usually not a good idea to buy from individuals in Facebook groups offering to sell tickets. That’s hard to verify, and many are scammed that way. Instead, check with the individual venue to see how their resell process works. It varies throughout Europe depending on the country and the individual stadium.

Taylor Swift shares rare details of Eras Tour planning after major changes

Taylor's eras tour returned with an 11th new era.

Taylor Swift  has revealed that the updated Eras Tour set was planned over eight months ago, as she was wrapping up the North American leg of the tour. 

The popstar returned to the stage on Thursday May 9 in Paris, France, revealing seven new songs had been added to the setlist, from the 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department.

On Friday, she gave insight into the decision, telling fans that "it has been so rewarding playing it for you because we started planning this surprise for you about eight or nine months ago". "And then when we got two months off of the Eras tour, we really didn’t take any time off at all, we just went directly back into rehearsals," she added, going on to thank her "crew, my dancers, my band, my backing vocals, everyone who did that".

To reflect the new additions, several other songs were cut and two eras were combined, while new costumes were also on show. In an interesting twist, rather than the previous decision to reference the older eras with updated modern looks, she appeared to have worked with designers including Naeem Khan and Roberto Cavalli to instead simply copy the original eras looks, as most obviously seen in the Fearless  dress. 

Red  replaced Evermore  as the third era on the setlist, and the sixth era became Folk-more , a combination of Folklore  and Evermore . 1989  followed and then she segued into The Tortured Poets Departmen t.

The TTPD  set was expected, as YouTube shorts shared by Taylor in the weeks since TTPD's release revealed new set pieces including a barre that features the album logo in the middle; it ended up being a bed frame for 'Fortnight'. 

Her dancers had also been spotted with new props, while Taylor had been seen practicing in the same heels she wears in the 'Fortnight' video.

 The set began with 'But Daddy I Love Him,' and  she then sang part of 'So High School,'  before a punishing performance of 'Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?' and into 'Down Bad,' complete with alien spaceships. 

A performance of 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,' saw her dancers turn into a marching band, before 'I Can Do It With A Broken Heart' became a jazzy 1920s number that began with her being undressed from the TTPD dress into a sequin top and shorts. 

Inspired by the era's silent films, it was a theatrical over the top moment with the dancers putting Taylor's shoes on her feet for her, and pushing her forward despite her protestations, a metaphor that spoke to the heartache she was going through every night in 2023 while performing on tour. 

The final era, Midnights , received no changes, keeping its original seven songs: 'Lavender Haze,' 'Anti Hero,' 'Midnight Rain,' 'Vigilante Shit,' 'Bejeweled,' 'Mastermind,' and 'Karma'.

“I love you so much,” Taylor tells the crowd in the Paris arena, closing the first night of the Europe leg of her Eras tour, where she revamped her setlist and performed new music for the first time.

Travis Kelce Spotted Dancing at Taylor Swift’s 87th ‘Eras Tour’ Concert in Paris

Travis Kelce traveled to Paris to attend Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour concert as she celebrated her 87th tour date — which just so happens to be Kelce’s jersey number.

The NFL star, 34, was spotted in the crowd at Paris La Défense Arena on Sunday, May 12, as the singer, also 34, performed. He looked joyful as he danced to her hits, including classics such as “Love Story” and “You Belong With Me,” per social media footage.

Kelce has been a regular attendee at Swift’s concerts during the NFL offseason. In February, he made the lengthy trip to Sydney , where he was seen wearing a stack of friendship bracelets and handing out guitar picks to fans. The following month, Kelce traveled to Singapore to support Swift.

The couple — who began dating in summer 2023 — have been spending extra quality time together in recent months as she has been on a break from her tour since March. They kept a low profile in the early weeks of her hiatus, taking a romantic vacation to The Bahamas in March. In April, they reemerged to attend the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where they showed PDA, kissing and embracing, as they enjoyed multiple performances.

Later that month, Kelce and Swift supported their friend Patrick Mahomes at a Las Vegas auction for his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation. Kelce took to the stage to announce that his “significant other” wanted to donate Eras Tour tickets to benefit the organization, which ultimately went for $80,000.

Amid their respective pauses from their busy careers, the pair “deepened their bond” thanks to “all the time they’ve spent together recently,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly in April.

As Swift prepared to resume the international leg of the Eras Tour , which will wrap up in December after a nearly two-year run, the insider divulged that her strengthened connection with Kelce “makes the prospect of her tour more challenging” because “she’ll be sad” about their time apart.

Still, the two are on the same page about their demanding work schedules. “They support and respect [each other],” the source added. “They have busy careers, so they understand those commitments, as difficult as it is.”
