Hawaii Weather in October

First up on our October in Hawaii review is the weather. Mid-fall is a good time of year, although the islands are slowly entering the rainy season. You might see slightly higher chances for rain, but nothing that would ruin your trip.

Hawaii rains tend to fall mostly at night, so the chances are that you will be sleeping soundly during the showers. Also, if it does rain in the day, the showers tend to be in sudden, short bursts. You can also consider booking your accommodations on the leeward side of the islands, as these spots typically experience fewer showers. The island you choose will also make a difference. Big Island sees the least rainfall, while Kauai sees the most.

Temperatures are perfect hovering in the mid to high 80s range. Evenings are equally pleasant dropping into the 70s. This is preferable to the middle 60s that you might see in the spring and winter months. September and October boast the warmest ocean temperatures, making October ideal for water sports fanatics. Even if you want to dip your toes in the ocean as you are strolling along the beach, you will find the tepid waters are a welcome surprise.

When traveling throughout the islands, you will see some variations of temperature if you are going into the mountains or climbing the volcanoes. Higher altitudes mean lower temperatures even in Hawaii. You can bring along a jacket, so you aren’t left shivering on your mountain adventures.

The only downside to traveling in October is that it is hurricane season in the Pacific. Although this sounds a little scary, hurricanes and tropical storms rarely hit Hawaii. It’s just good to know it is a possibility when you are planning a trip.

Hawaii Crowds in October

If you want to avoid crowds in summer, October is perfect. It is one of the least traveled times of the year as summer is over, and the holidays are still a few months away. That’s not to say you will encounter massive crowds of people at any other time of the year. It does mean that there is a noticeable drop in tourism in the fall months.

Hawaii Costs in October

October is one of the best times of year to travel to Hawaii for the budget-conscious person. Hotel rates are well below the annual average dipping down to about $335 per night. When you compare that to the peak season of $450, that looks pretty sweet. Airfares are harder to predict, but in general, October tends to see lower fares. You can always search for deals online.

Hawaii Events & Highlights in October

If you consider yourself a foodie, October is the only time of year to attend the annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival. Expansion of the event promises to make it better than ever. Here are a few more events to attend:

  • Hawaii Food & Wine Festival : This festival covers multiple islands over three weekends. Each event features world-renowned master chefs, other culinary personalities, as well as wine and spirit producers. The event promotes 100% sustainability and invites you to "Taste our Love for the Land."
  • Coconut Festival : This Kauai event honors the humble coconut with entertainment, cooking demonstrations, artisans, crafters, kooky coconut games, pie eating contests, a coconut cook-off, activities, and of course, plenty of food featuring—you guessed it—coconut.
  • Emalani Festival: This is one of Kauai’s most significant cultural events and is filled with songs, hula, history, and spectacle.
  • Maui Fair : The Maui Fair is a family-oriented educational event that features local food, entertainment, horticulture, livestock, homemaking, art exhibits, and competitions.
  • Ironman Competition : This is hailed as the most iconic Triathlon event. Athletes test their endurance and beat their personal bests on the world stage.

October is an excellent month to book your Hawaiian vacation if you want to see pristine weather, reasonable rates, fewer crowds, and many cultural events.

Hawaii in October: A Complete Guide

With the summer crowds gone and prices going down before the winter holidays, October is one of the best times to head to Hawaii. Go to Oahu for top surf and food; Kauai for charming local bars and hidden swimming holes; Maui for prime whale watching and stellar sunsets; or the Big Island for everything from black sand beaches and waterfalls to lava tubes and volcanoes.

Note on Related Articles:   This article is part of a series of articles to help our readers decide which month is best to visit the Hawaiian Islands. If you are thinking of going to Hawaii in a different month, please check out our other articles listed at the end of this one.

October Weather in Hawaii

Rainfall is at its lowest in Hawaii from April through the first week of October. And while the hurricane season here lasts from June through November, you are as likely to come across a storm in October as you are any other time of the year. Just remember there is still plenty to do in Hawaii, even when it rains.

Average Temperatures

Temperatures tend to hover in the mid to high 80s range. Evenings are usually pleasant, dropping into the 70s. October has one of the warmest ocean temperatures, making it perfect for water sports lovers. Even if all you want to do is just dip your toes in the ocean while strolling along the beach, the tepid waters will be a delightful surprise.

Water Temperatures

The ocean temperature in October in Hawaii is warm and comfortable enough for all kinds of fun activities like swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, and scuba diving. In Oahu, expect the ocean temperatures to range between 76°F and 81°F on average. If you’re on the Big Island , the temperatures are similar, usually from 77°F to 81°F. In the northernmost islands, like Kauai , the water typically ranges from 77°F to 83°F.

Birds eye view of Hapuna Big with perfect blue water and white sand beach on the Big Island

For the uninitiated, water temperatures below 70°F are considered dangerous, according to the National Center for Cold Water Safety . With that said, if you’re worried that October will be too cold to get down into the water in the Hawaiian Islands or that you’ll need a wetsuit, don’t worry.

Ocean Conditions

Locals and visitors alike surf year-round on Hawaii’s legendary waves, but there are a few things to keep in mind, especially if you’re planning to surf – or as the pros call it, “hang ten”. On the islands’ north-facing shores, waves are usually larger in October, so if you are a beginner learning to surf it can be dangerous.

Cost to Visit Hawaii in October

For the budget-conscious souls, October is hands down the best time of year to travel to Hawaii. Hotels and hostels are well below the annual average; you can easily find a three-star hotel for around $200-$300 per night. When you compare that to the peak season at $350, that’s nothing short of a miracle. Flights and car rentals are harder to predict, but generally speaking, October is one of the cheapest times of the year.

The cost of your round-trip flight will depend on where you’re flying from, obviously, but expect to cough up at least $520 for domestic flights. This is the absolute minimum, and it can easily go up to over $1,200. Premium and first-class tickets are even more expensive.

If you want to save on flights, consider this: It might seem rather unorthodox, but instead of setting your travel dates in advance before booking the flights, why not let the price guide you to the cheapest dates possible? By being flexible with your travel dates, you can often score mega savings on airfare. We recommend setting price alerts on Google, Skyscanner, or AirfareWatchDog, ideally starting several months out.

Accommodation

You can find a good budget hotel in Hawaii for $139-$194 per night during October, while the higher-end options can cost upwards of $987/night. If you want to save even more, staying at a hostel is a good option. The Northshore Hostel in Maui costs $58/night, and the Polynesian Hostel Beach Club in Honolulu is about $49/night.

If you’re traveling with friends or family, you may want to look into renting an apartment via Airbnb or Zillow; this is usually cheaper than booking a couple of rooms at a hotel.

Renting a car anywhere in Hawaii can be a little tricky, especially now after the pandemic. During the pandemic, rental car companies were forced to sell their vehicles and thin out their fleets due to a lack of visitors. Now that visitors are returning in droves, the companies are still struggling with their smaller inventories.

As a result, car rentals have become quite expensive; expect to pay around $90-$120 per day on less-crowded islands like Kauai and the Big Island, while the cheapest available rental car on Maui can cost upwards of $157 a day.

Best Times to Book Your October Vacation

The long-distance canoe races from Molokai to Oahu are usually scheduled in late September and early October. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this year’s Moloka’i Hoe race has been canceled and replaced with an Oahu-based World Championship Race on October 8-9 th , 2022. There will also be the Ironman World Championship from October 6-8th.

Why are we talking about this instead of telling you the best time to book your trip? Because of these events, the island is going to be busier during October. Don’t get us wrong, it won’t be crowded as it usually is during the summer or winter holiday months – but it will be bustling with about 2,000 or so participants who are expected to join in from around the world. In relation to this, make sure you book your flights and accommodations at least 4-5 months in advance.

If you can’t book that early on, book at least 21-35 days in advance to save on domestic flights.

Is October Crowded in Hawaii?

No, it’s not. As we said above, October is the month of outrigger canoe races, or as is the case this year, the Ironman World Championship. Around 2,000-2,500 people come from all around the globe to participate in these events. But this crowd is pretty negligible compared to the tens of thousands of people who flock to the Hawaiian Islands during the summer vacation (in June-July) or winter holidays (in December-January).

Events in October

There’s a lot happening in October in Hawaii:

Oahu has the best Halloween festivities, with costume contests (for people and their pets!), pumpkin-picking fests, and full-fledged carnivals at seemingly every corner. You can partake in the Holy Nativity’s 7 th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival in Honolulu, which features a patch of over 2,000 locally-grown pumpkins and offers rides, games, and a watermelon-eating and costume contest.

The Mililani Public Library hosts family-friendly screenings of Halloween-special movies like Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Monsters, Inc., and The NeverEnding Story. We said family-friendly, so no Sicario!

The Big Island

The Big Island will be hosting the 2022 Ironman World Championship in the sunny capital of Kailua-Kona. Age-group and professional triathletes from 55+ countries will participate in the ultimate test of grit, strength, and heart. This is a two-day event; women will race on October 6 th and men will race on October 8 th , 2022. The age-groupers are distributed between the two days.

For the foodies, the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a must-visit. It will be held from October 20 th to November 6 th this year on multiple islands at different locations, including the Hyatt, Victoria Ward Park, Marriott Resort, Halekulani Hotel, Ko’olina Resort, and the Hawaii Convention Center. Each event features world-famous chefs and wine and liquor producers. On the Big Island, it will be held on October 28-29 th .

This year, the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival comes to Kaanapali on October 20-23rd. A series of Festivals of Aloha are also scheduled this year from October 15 th to October 20 th . It will begin with the Hana Parade at the Hana Ball Park and end with an Arts Talent Show at Hana Bay.

 Kauai

The Annual Coconut Festival is scheduled for October 4 th & 5 th this year at the Kapa’a Beach Park to honor this delicious and essential part of the Hawaiian culture. There will be pie-eating contests, cooking demonstrations, games, and entertainment featuring – you guessed it – coconut.

The Pupu O Niihau: Jewels of the Pacific exhibition will begin on October 4 th 2022 and last through the end of December. This is a Niihau Shell Exhibit that features a gorgeous collection of jewelry pieces you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

On October 1 st , from 2 pm to 8:30 pm, the Aloha Festivals will come to Lanai and feature cultural demonstrations, live entertainment, artisans, crafters, free keiki (kids) activities, and much more.

The Aloha Festivals on Molokai are set for October 8 th in the evening. Molokai’s Royal Court will host a traditional ceremony where they will receive the Royal symbols. A Ulu-Uala-Kalo Contest, Poke Contest, Special off-island entertainment, and several other events are scheduled for the day.

Water Activities

With endless golden beaches, balmy weather, and inviting blue waves, you can play in the water all October long, no matter which island you’re on. Here are a few ideas on how to enhance your fun in the Hawaiian waters:

Go snorkeling in the Pupukea Beach Park aka Shark’s Cove (Oahu): From March through October, this spot is perfect for snorkeling and diving. The cavernous tunnels and lava tubes are great for both experienced and novice snorkelers. However, make sure to wear reef shoes at all times since there are a lot of sharp rocks around.

Go swimming in Queen’s Bath (Kauai): While dangerous high surf in November-December is common, low surf in June-October makes this tide pool a popular spot for swimming. You’ll need reef shoes – and agility – to get there, but once in, you can mosey like a regal queen, emerging only to climb up the rocks for a short jump back in. Be careful though, especially if you are not a pro swimmer; more than 25 people have drowned here. Swim with extra caution at all times.

Take a surf class in Maui: If you’ve always wanted to learn to surf, Maui has several surf schools that offer lessons at a cheap rate. You can try well-known companies like the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy, Surf Club Maui, Maui Surfer Girls, Maui Beach Boys, and Maui Waveriders; don’t forget to price hunt to find the best deals.

Outdoor Activities

Looking to spend time outside exploring the archipelago? Here are some salient ways to enjoy Hawaii during your October vacation:

Visit the Kamakou Preserve (East Moloka’i): For those looking for something off the beaten path, consider visiting this 2,774-acre rain forest preserve tucked away on the slopes of Mt. Kamakou. From March to October, guided educational tours are available to take you through this stunning wonderland full of native trees, rare bogs, wet ohia forests, and colorful wildlife. These excursions tend to fill up many months in advance, so make sure to reserve as soon as you can.

The IWT Aloha Classic Wave Championships (Maui): The greatest windsurfers in the world come together for this final event in the Pro Boardsailing World Tour. It’s usually scheduled for the last week of October; this year, it will be held from October 24 th to November 4 th . If you’re in Maui, don’t miss this spectacular event.

The Lahaina Halloween Party (Maui): Around 20,000 people show up to this giant costume party on the streets of Lahaina. The festivities start before sunset, and we recommend getting there as early as possible because finding parking here is not easy.

Other Activities Worth Mentioning

If you want to see the rare – and endangered – silversword plants, drive down to Kalahaku Overlook on your way to Haleakala Crater Road. This is a striking plant that grows only in Hawaii and takes anywhere from 4 to 50 years to bloom! From May to October, the plant sends up an up to 6-foot long stalk that looks like a bouquet of purple sunflowers.

Unless you’re willing to risk arrest, don’t even think about plucking one and taking it home!

Is October a good time to go to Hawaii?

Absolutely! By October, kids are usually back at school, so fewer families travel to Hawaii around this time. And since this is the off-season, you can find great deals on hotels and airfare.

Is it rainy season in Hawaii in October?

No. Winter (December to March) is considered the rainy season in Hawaii; October doesn’t get a lot of rain.

Is October hurricane season in Hawaii?

Yes, it is. But wait, it’s not as scary as you might think – tropical storms and hurricanes rarely hit Hawaii. The most recent hurricane to hit Hawaii was in September of 1992 in Kauai. In August 2019, Hurricane Erick passed by about 230 miles away from the southernmost Hawaiian Islands, resulting in a light tropical storm.

What are the worst months to visit Hawaii?

Okay, first of all, there’s no bad time to visit Hawaii!

That being said, if you hate crowds and/or overspending, December will be your least favorite month to plan a Hawaii vacation. In addition to the insane holiday crowds, there’s also the fact that December is the wettest month of the year. Mother Nature cannot be predicted; she does what she wants, when she wants.

What is the cheapest time of the year to go to Hawaii?

There are two specific periods when everything is cheaper in Hawaii: the first off-season is from the Easter Break until the middle of June, and the second off-season is from September through the middle of December. In other words, October is one of the cheapest times to visit Hawaii.

Can you swim in Maui in October?

You most certainly can! September and October have the warmest ocean temperatures in Hawaii, so the water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, diving, and surfing.

What should I wear in Hawaii in October?

Whatever you normally wear in summer, i.e., lightweight clothes, shorts, skirts, sandals, and flip-flops. The days are sunny and hot, so wear clothes that are loose and breezy. Based on this, you may want to bring a lightweight sweatshirt or jacket for the nights when it can get a little cooler. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.

October Rocks!

As the leaves are changing and temperatures are cooling off in most parts of the continental US, October is a fantastic time to take a trip and recharge your spirit. And what better place to feed your soul and escape the daily stress than the land of leis , blue waters, and boundless nature. We hope this guide helped you understand what to expect from Hawaii in October.

Until next time, Aloha!

What is the Weather in Hawaii During October Like?

Compared to traditional fall weather, October in Hawaii is still considered summer and has amazingly warm temperatures.

The norm for temperature in October is 83 degrees during the daytime and around the 70s during the night, with nights getting the lower 70s, which is a lot warmer than other places!

Image of a rainbow over Waimea Canyon on Kauai

While it may rain a little more in October in Hawaii, the rain mostly comes around the night, and rain during the day is usually pretty short for the most part. You will also be happy to know that you can expect rays of sunshine for eight hours throughout the season!

Places like the Big Island will have less rain while places like Kauai will have more rain, but no matter where you decide to check out, you can still expect warm weather and lovely sunshine!

What to Wear in Hawaii in October

Amazingly, you can wear clothes as you normally would during to hottest months in Hawaii, because the weather is still warm and sunny during the “fall season.”

Wearing lightweight clothes like shorts and sandals should be fine, and a hat and sunglasses will help keep the sun out of your eyes.

Since it might be a little chilly at night, having a sweatshirt or a light sweater should help to keep you toasty. Generally, a pair of long pants should be enough to keep you warm.

What to Pack for Hawaii in October

Packing should be the same as clothing as they are the same as they would be in any other season. I’ll start you off with my Oahu packing list and my Maui packing list . And if you want to make sure you aren’t forgetting some of the essentials on your trip, you can check out some of those things HERE .

Find out what to add to your Hawaii packing list recommended by top Hawaii blog Hawai Travel Spot! Image of a suitcase with vacation clothes

However, having some long pants and a sweatshirt can be helpful to stave off the cold. A rash guard swimsuit will also help to keep you warm if swimming is something on your itinerary.

Also, remember some other essentials, like hats, sunscreen, sandals, and sunglasses, which will help you deal with the sun.

However, if you do visit Hawaii in October and happen to forget something, it’s as simple as heading to a local Target or Walmart and getting the things you need at a cheaper price.

Why Travel to Hawaii in Fall?

Despite what some may believe, there are many great reasons to check out Hawaii in October. Because there are no major holidays during this time, the beaches are a lot less crowded. Since travel is down during this time, it is also known as one of the cheapest times to fly to Hawaii and stay there.

Image of Waikiki Beach on Oahu

October also has a much more temperate climate. So rather than being scalded by the heat, you can still get Hawaii’s traditional sunshine and warmth without being burnt to a crisp.

I know that many people get seasonal depression when fall comes around and the weather gets much colder. So October can be a great time to stay a little closer to the warmth and recharge before you head back into the colder season!

Hawaii in October FAQs

Generally, you will find that the best weather is going to be in April , May, and in the case of fall: September and October. This is because November to March are the rainiest months, which is probably something you want to try and avoid.

The cheapest time to head to Hawaii will be during February and March, while December and January will be the most expensive times because this is during the holiday season with peak travel.

The coolest thing about October is that there are tons of cool festivals, like Halloween, coconut, and even chocolate festivals, that you simply can’t access any other time of the year!

Is October a Good Time to Go To Hawaii?

posted by James Brockbank on July 14, 2022 // last updated on July 14, 2022

October is a favorite month for many people. The days are getting shorter, the air is cooler, and if you happen to live in a place where the leaves change color, you’re treated to a lovely display of foliage. Still, for some, the chillier days aren’t appealing. They want to make their summer last a little longer by taking a tropical vacation.

If this is you and your destination of choice is Hawaii , you may wonder if October is a good time to visit the Aloha State. There are many factors to consider when deciding when to travel to Hawaii. Read on to get a detailed breakdown of what an October Hawaiian getaway looks like in terms of fares, weather, events, and more.

Getting There: Costs of Airfare and Lodging in October in Hawaii

Hotels and resorts, october weather , october events in hawaii, what to wear in hawaii in october , closing thoughts .

In travel jargon, the “shoulder season” is the season between the peak months and the off-season. The peak season in Hawaii is mid-December through March. During this time, Hawaii is full of people fleeing harsh cold weather for a warm getaway.; some even choose to spend the winter holidays there. The second peak season comes in summer. This is when kids are out of school, and many families take the opportunity to travel. Both these times are busy and pricey times to visit Hawaii.

February, March, September, and October are in the shoulder season in Hawaii. That means that these months tend to be cheaper to travel in than other months.

A simple Google search shows that an October 10th-17th trip from Houston to Honolulu is about 300 dollars cheaper than a trip for the exact dates in July. Of course, many variables come into when making individual bookings, but overall, traveling in a month like October will generally save you money.

You can save even more money by doing a little research and following some simple tricks.

hawaii travel october

Booking well in advance usually helps you get the best deals for your trip to Hawaii. If you’re traveling in October, you might want to look early in the year, at least six months in advance. For many families, booking an October Hawaii trip is beneficial when they get their tax refund. If you file early, this is usually some time around March. This gives you more than six months to plan your vacation and to book far enough in advance to get a great deal.

Alternatively, people with freer schedules can sign up to receive notifications telling them when reduced-price flights are coming up. This often requires the ability to change plans quickly, something many people cannot do, especially when it’s a significant vacation. However, if it’s something you can do, it might be worth a try.

Book With the Right Airline

Search travel sites, Google, and the airlines’ sites to discover who offers the best rates, and lock it in while it’s good! Hawaiian Airlines , Alaska Airlines, and Frontier Airlines often have the best deals for Hawaiian flights. That’s not to say that other airlines don’t have good values.

hawaii travel october

Consider Your Airport

If you live on the West Coast of the U.S., it’s easy to find affordable flights to Hawaii, and many direct flights are available. However, if you live farther east or are flying out of a smaller airport, flying to Hawaii is likely to be a long and expensive venture, requiring multiple stops in one flight.

Sometimes, it may be cheaper and easier, in the long run, to travel to a larger city first and take your direct Hawaii flight from there. Find out if this trick can work for your particular situation.

Bundle for Savings

When traveling to Hawaii in October, as with any time of year, you can save money by choosing a vacation package or bundle. These package deals include your flight and hotel and sometimes even include a specific number of meals. This can be great, especially if you’re traveling as a couple or a family.

Staying at a hotel in Hawaii can be pricey. As one of the world’s top vacation destinations, the Islands offer amazing resort experiences, and the cost of staying there reflects that. Even the smaller, less desirable hotels and motels capitalize on the popularity of Hawaii by keeping their prices relatively high.

Luckily, October boasts some of the least expensive lodging costs of any month. For example, a mid-tier resort hotel in Hawaii will cost you an average of $249 per night in October. Compare that with the $332 average in December.

Whether you’re looking for a high-end, all-inclusive resort or budget lodgings, it’s a great time of year to take advantage of less expensive, less crowded hotels.

Hawaii

Weather is a big issue that travelers often worry about when making an excursion during the off-seasons. After all, it is the off-season for a reason, and sometimes one of the reasons is inclement weather. Is this the case for Hawaii in October?

Many tourists to Hawaii enjoy the combination of warm oceans and cooler daytime highs as summer turns to winter. One notable thing is that Hawaii’s waters are the warmest in September and October. This is because the previous hot summer months have affected the water temperatures.

hawaii travel october

Winter? In October?

Hawaii is considered to have only two seasons : summer and winter. Summer runs from May to October, while winter is from October until May. Usually, October offers warm, pleasant weather that is slightly cooler than the sweltering days of summer.

How much cooler? In Honolulu, the average October high temperature is around 84 degrees, and the average low is 75 degrees. Still, these are ideal temperatures for beach days and evening walks to the local restaurants and bars.

On Kauai, one of the cooler islands, you can expect daily temperatures averaging around 76 degrees and lows around 60. This weather is quite different from Honolulu, showing how other islands offer slightly diverging climates.

You’ll see these climate differences between the islands come up a lot when discussing Hawaiian weather. They can be important points to consider when planning your October trip.

Nobody wants their vacation to be rained out. Luckily, you’re unlikely to encounter this in October in Hawaii. The rainiest months don’t begin until November; rainfall usually occurs at night, so it’s easy to work around it. There’s also the matter of climate difference between the regions. Some islands experience more rainfall than others, but you can usually find sun right around the corner.

All this sounds great, but what are the actual numbers? Let’s have a look at the four major islands and get an idea of what the average rainfall is like there in October.

Big Island: The Big Island of Hawaii is the driest island in October, averaging only 0.88 inches of rain for the month.

Maui: Coming in as the second driest island in October is Maui, with 1.2 inches of rain for the month. To put this into perspective, Salt Lake City, Utah, a reasonably dry western city, averages 1.3 inches of rain in October.

Oahu: The rainy season starts relatively early on Oahu, with average rainfall accumulating 2.33 inches for October.

Kauai: Kauai may not be the best island to visit in October if you’re betting on a warm sunny vacation. The island averages 3.82 inches for the month of October, similar to what you could expect in Chicago, Illinois.

Because the rainy season begins in November, you can lessen your chances of dealing with a lot of rain by traveling earlier in the month of October rather than later. If you do encounter some rainy periods, don’t worry. As mention ever earlier, rain in Hawaii usually doesn’t last all day, and it tends to be very localized.

Maui

What To Do on Rainy Hawaii October Day

Still, you can do plenty of things in Hawaii in October if the weather isn’t the best for going outside.

  • On Kauai: Visit the Kilohana Plantation and learn more about the island’s farming history. This former plantation sits on 110 acres and features a railway, a restaurant, shops, and of course, the historical plantation home itself.
  • On the Big Island: The University of Hilo’s 40,000 square-foot Imiloa Astronomy Center offers daily educational experiences and opportunities for relaxing stargazing in the evening.
  • On Oahu – Want to learn more about the history of Hawaii and Pacific Islander culture in general? Then a trip to the Bishop Museum is a great place to start. Spend time in this beautiful structure, built-in 1889, where you’ll find 24 million items, most of which document the history of the Pacific Islands in some way.
  • On Maui – Sometimes, you just need a spa day. When you do, the Spa Grande at the Grand Wailea Resort is THE place to have one. This gorgeous spa offers massages, facials, fitness training, and poolside pampering for a truly luxurious experience.

What About Hurricanes?

October is part of Hawaii’s hurricane season, which may give some travelers pause. However, before you back out of your plans, you must know a few things. First off, Hawaii doesn’t get many hurricanes that make landfall.

Unlike places on the U.S. East Coast- namely Florida – where hurricane season produces frequent intense storms, Hawaii has only had four storms hit the Islands directly in the last 60 years. While it’s impossible to guarantee that you won’t encounter a hurricane on your trip to Hawaii in October, it is considered a safe time to travel. In the event of a storm, hotels and resorts have safety measures in place.

Trade Winds

Trade winds are winds that blow steadily east to west. Trade winds make Hawaii a breezy vacation spot for most of the year. While it still can be windy in the fall, October is one of the months when the trade winds tend to be milder.

As an off-peak month, October is a great time to visit Hawaii if you want to avoid crowds of other tourists.

October isn’t a popular time of year for travel. School vacation is over, the holidays are approaching, and people are turning their thoughts to settling in and preparing for the end of the year activities. Many people don’t have the time or money to take any major trips in October, but if it fits into your schedule and budget, it can be an excellent time to see Hawaii.

Some Tips for Avoiding Crowds

Even though October is usually a slow month in Hawaii, it is still a busy vacation spot that welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists each month.  There are some extra steps you can take to have a more relaxed trip away from the hustle-bustle:

  • Visit Less Crowded Beaches – Some areas of the Hawaiian Islands are less busy than others. Very popular, well-known sites like Waikiki are likely to be packed regardless of what time of year you visit. Instead of these places, try quieter, lesser-known spots, like the secluded beach areas near Chinamen’s Hat.
  • Go To Museums, Exhibitions, and Cultural Events – Many people who visit Hawaii are there for the beaches, food, and nightlife. It’s no wonder; the Islands offer wonderful opportunities for all of these. However, if you prefer quieter, more culture-based activities, you will likely find these places more conducive to peaceful, unhurried enjoyment.
  • Pursue Laidback Outdoor Activities – Hiking, trail walking, biking, and camping in out-of-the-way places are great ways to enjoy the splendor of the Hawaiian outdoors.
  • Choose Lodgings Wisely – While large, all-inclusive resorts are fine if that’s what you’re after, they can be crowded. Overcrowded pools, lines at restaurants, and loud courtyards aren’t unusual in these places. Even though you’ll find less of this chaos in October, you may want to further your pursuit of a peaceful vacation by choosing an alternative lodging arrangement. Air B&B and other sites that enable people to host their homes have expanded the lodging market and offered many more opportunities for travelers seeking a quieter, more individualized experience.

Here are a few of the standout events that are traditionally held in Hawaii in October.

Hawaii Food and Wine Festival

Breathtaking views, tropical weather, and gourmet food…what could be better? The Hawaii Food and Wine Festival is a star-studded event that brings the best of the culinary world together in paradise.

Hawaii International Film Festival

Creative minds from the Asia-Pacific region and around the world gather in Oahu for cultural exchange and networking.

Eo E Emalani I Alakai Festival

Also known as the Queen Emma Festival, celebrates Emma, the Victorian-era queen of Hawaii. The event includes a grand procession, hula dancers, music, food, and more.

Ironman World Championship

Since 1978, the strongest, bravest athletes in the world have gathered in Hawaii to participate in one of the toughest triathlons on earth. The competition is held annually in October in Kailua-Kona.

Lilikoi Festival

Lilikoi is a fruit that grows abundantly in Hawaii. This festival celebrates the fruit through cooking demos, sample tasting opportunities, and much more.

Halloween Events

Have you considered spending Halloween in Hawaii? While it might be a departure from your normal spooky time activities, the Islands have their own unique ways of celebrating the holiday, and plenty of things to do! Halloween events change every year, so check the events calendar for the area where you’ll be staying. If you are a hotel or resort, they might have their own Halloween activities as well.

These are just a few of the events that you can find around the Hawaiian islands in October. There are so many more occurring on the local level throughout the month, Google searches, local news, your hotel or AirBnB, and other resources can all be valuable ways to find events that appeal to you.

hawaii travel october

Traveling during the fall can be tricky wherever you go. Weather can go from bright and sunny to wet and chilly in a snap. Thankfully, Hawaii weather isn’t extreme in October, so you should be able to get by with relatively light luggage.

It will still be warm in Hawaii in October, so you can pack for a tropical vacation. Swimsuits, t-shirts, polos, shorts, sun hats, and long dresses will get you through most days. If you plan to do any hiking or other outdoor activities, you’ll want to pack appropriate shoes and maybe a rain poncho just in case. Be prepared for cooler nights by packing a pair of long pants and a sweater. Zip hoodies make more sense than pullovers in Hawaii since the weather can go from cool to warm and back again pretty quickly.

For many people, Hawaii is a dream getaway. If you happen to get the chance to make this dream a reality, you can plan ahead to make it the best vacation possible! Traveling to Hawaii in October can be a great choice for many reasons. Milder weather, sparser crowds, warmer ocean water, and fun events for every interest and budget.

It’s a nice time for older travelers to visit because there will be fewer youngsters at the resorts and on the beach, making for a quieter vacation. On the other hand, homeschoolers and other families on an alternative schedule can enjoy some real-life learning and hands-on experience to add to their curriculum.

There’s so much to learn and do in Hawaii. When you come back from your trip, you can face the coming holidays and winter season having made beautiful memories of the Islands.

  • Poi: Poi is a staple in Hawaiian cuisine made from mashed taro root. It can vary in consistency from thick to thin and is often served as a side dish. Poi has a distinct taste and is rich in cultural significance.
  • Lomi Lomi Salmon: Lomi lomi salmon is a refreshing salad made with diced salmon, tomatoes, onions, and sometimes green onions. The mixture is gently tossed together, creating a light and flavorful dish.
  • Haupia: Haupia is a coconut milk-based dessert that has a pudding-like consistency. It is often served in squares or as a creamy topping for other desserts. Haupia is cool and sweet, providing a delightful contrast to savory dishes.
  • Chicken Long Rice: Chicken long rice is a noodle dish made with clear bean thread noodles, chicken, ginger, and green onions. The broth-based dish is simple yet comforting.
  • Poke: While poke bowls are popular on their own, a luau might feature a poke station with various marinated raw fish options. Guests can customize their poke bowls with a selection of toppings and sauces.
  • Sweet Potato or Taro Rolls: These rolls, made from sweet potato or taro, are often served warm and complement the savory dishes with a slightly sweet and starchy flavor.
  • Huli Huli Chicken: Often enjoyed at outdoor gatherings, huli huli chicken is grilled and basted with a flavorful teriyaki-like glaze. The name "huli huli" comes from the Hawaiian term for "turn" or "flip".

6. Taro-Based Dishes:

Taro-Based Dishes - Hawaii Weather in October - Planet Travel Advisor

Taro, a starchy root vegetable, holds cultural and culinary significance in Hawaiian cuisine. It's used in various dishes, showcasing its versatility and unique flavor. Here are some taro-based dishes commonly enjoyed in Hawaii:

  • Poi: Poi is a traditional Hawaiian dish made by mashing cooked taro roots and mixing them with water to achieve a smooth, paste-like consistency. Poi can range from thick to thin, and it is often served as a side dish at luaus or alongside other main dishes.
  • Taro Chips: Taro is thinly sliced and deep-fried to create crispy taro chips. These chips are a popular snack and are often seasoned with various spices for added flavor.
  • Taro Puffs (Kulolo): Kulolo is a traditional Hawaiian dessert made with grated taro, coconut milk, and sugar. The mixture is wrapped in ti leaves and baked, resulting in a dense and sweet pudding-like treat.
  • Taro Bread or Rolls: Taro is incorporated into bread or rolls to add a unique flavor and purple hue. This savory bread can be enjoyed on its own or served as a side with meals.
  • Taro Pancakes: Grated taro can be added to pancake batter, creating a unique twist on traditional pancakes. The taro imparts a slightly nutty and earthy flavor to the breakfast favorite.
  • Taro Smoothies or Bubble Tea: Taro is often used to make smoothies or bubble tea, providing a creamy and slightly sweet base. Taro bubble tea is particularly popular, featuring taro-flavored tapioca pearls.
  • Taro Dumplings: Taro is sometimes used as a filling for dumplings, adding a distinctive flavor and texture to these savory delights.
  • Taro Salad: Cooked and diced taro can be used in salads, adding a hearty and earthy element. Taro salads often include a mix of vegetables, herbs, and a light dressing.
  • Taro Mochi: Taro-flavored mochi, a chewy rice cake, is a delightful sweet treat. The mochi may encase a sweetened taro filling or be flavored with taro throughout.

  • Traditional and Modern Twists: While traditional Hawaiian Shave Ice remains popular, some vendors offer modern twists by adding ice cream, azuki beans, or even a scoop of mochi to the bottom of the shave ice cone.
  • Local Favorite: Matsumoto Shave Ice: Matsumoto Shave Ice on the North Shore of Oahu is particularly famous. Operating since 1951, it has become an iconic destination for both locals and tourists seeking this delectable treat.

8- Safety and Considerations While Visiting Hawaii in October

OUTRIGGER Kona Resort & Spa - Hawaii Weather in October - Planet Travel Advisor

Visiting Hawaii in October offers a delightful blend of warm temperatures and fewer crowds, making it an appealing time for travelers. However, it's crucial to stay mindful of certain safety considerations during this period. October marks the transition from summer to winter in Hawaii, and while the likelihood of hurricanes is diminished, it's prudent to stay informed about weather conditions. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and any advisories, as unexpected changes can occur. Additionally, October can bring high surf to Hawaii's shores, making it vital to exercise caution when enjoying the ocean. Be aware of strong currents, adhere to posted warnings, and choose beaches with lifeguards for a safer beach experience.

Furthermore, sun protection is paramount in Hawaii's tropical climate. Even in October, the sun's intensity remains considerable. Remember to use sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and stay hydrated to safeguard against the sun's rays. Embracing these safety measures ensures a secure and enjoyable visit to Hawaii, allowing you to fully appreciate the islands' natural beauty and cultural offerings during your October sojourn.

Final Words!

October is a great time to visit Hawaii, as it offers warm and sunny weather with fewer crowds and lower prices. While there may be occasional rain showers, they are typically brief and do not disrupt outdoor activities.

It's important to keep in mind that weather patterns can vary between the different islands, so it's recommended to check the specific forecast for the areas you plan to visit. With proper planning and packing, visitors can enjoy a wonderful vacation to Hawaii during the month of October.

Is October a good month to go to Hawaii?

Table of contents hide, what’s hawaii’s weather like in october, is october a crowded time to visit hawaii, is october a cheap or expensive month for a hawaii vacation, are there any special festivals or reasons to visit hawaii in october.

When factoring weather, costs and low crowds, October is one of the best months to visit Hawaii. Let’s examine the details showing why October is an excellent month for a Hawaii vacation.

After Hawaii’s warmest months of August and September, October temperatures cool down only slightly. Daytime high temperatures at most beach resorts average in the mid to upper 80s F. Nighttime temperatures only dip into the lower 70s F.

October rainfall levels in Hawaii are generally low — especially when compared to the wetter, winter months. However, in comparison to the drier, summer months, October rainfall levels are higher. Even though October rainfall levels are typically edging higher than the drier summer months, rain mostly falls at night in Hawaii .

Here are the average rainfall levels by island for the month of October:

Kauai – 3.82 inches – This measurement is based on Lihue’s averages per Weather.com. Lihue is located on the southeastern side of the island and is not as wet as the North Shore, but not as dry as the South Shore.

Oahu – 2.33 inches – This average is based on Honolulu’s rainfall per Weather.com, which will include Waikiki Beach. North Shore rainfall will be a little higher, while Ko Olina’s rainfall will be slightly lower.

Maui – 1.20 inches – This average is based on Kahului’s rainfall per Weather.com. Kahului is where Maui’s main airport is, but it’s not typically considered a resort area like Wailea, Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua. Kahului’s rainfall tends to be a bit higher than all the resort areas, with the exception of Hana on east Maui.

Hawaii, the Big Island – 0.88 inches – This average is based on Kailua-Kona’s weather per Weather.com. Kailua-Kona is a popular resort area. Further north on the Kohala Coast, the weather tends to be even drier with only about 10 – 12 inches of rain for the entire  year ! Hilo, on the east side of Hawaii Island, is another story though, with an average of 9.77 inches of rainfall for October per Weather.com.

Lanai – 2.51 inches – This average is for Lanai City in Lanai’s upcountry/highlands, which tends to get  much more  rain that the island’s sunny, beach resort at Manele Bay. Data sourced from Weather.com.

Molokai – 1.39 inches – This average, per Weather.com, is for the airport just west of Kaunakakai town. Weather towards the east side will be rainier.

Generally, Hawaii’s ocean temperatures are the warmest in September and October, which make it more pleasant for swimming.

Tropical storms are rare events in Hawaii, but we feel we should note that October is during the official hurricane season. Learn more by reading these FAQs on Hawaii’s hurricane season .

Per our analysis of Hawaii Tourism Authority monthly visitor statistics, October is a month with below average number of visitors. In fact, October is one of the least visited months after September.

Per our analysis of Hawaii hotel rates, October is an excellent month to save money on accommodations. In fact, it’s one of the cheapest times of the year as you can see from the following graph.

The cost of flights is a bit less predictable but tends to follow the same trends as hotel rates. Anecdotally, we tend to travel to Hawaii when we find low airfare and we have visited Hawaii in October quite a bit. See our tips for finding the cheapest airfare to Hawaii .

You can almost always find a celebration of some sort in Hawaii. The Aloha Festivals continue on from September. If you’re visiting Hawaii over Halloween on October 31st, you can find fun events for all ages. See our article on Halloween in Hawaii .

For more ideas of what events take place in October, check out our most recent page of top events . Another source to find events is by using the search feature on  GoHawaii.com .

Hi Sheila, I am planning a family holiday and can’t decide between September or October to you have any advice?

Cheers Vanessa

They’re really about the same. You can’t make a bad choice. 🙂

Hello!!!! I’ll be there in October for my honeymoon… I can’t wait!!!!!! Is October a good month for visit Hawaii?? Is October a rainy month?? hope NO 😉

Hi Matteo – all your questions are answered in the article. 🙂

We are starting the planning process of visiting Hawaii in October 17. We were really hesitant due to weather but your article was exactly what we needed; concise & helpful. Thank you! We want to stay in Kona district. Any suggestions?

See our guide for where to stay on the Big Island here: https://www.govisithawaii.com/hawaiis-big-island-where-to-stay/

Hi, is the ironman event really massive, does it make getting accommodation etc difficult? Thanks.

The Ironman in Hawaii is only on the Big Island. We’ve never been on the island during the actual event, but we’ve arrived there the day or two after Ironman and we didn’t have any trouble getting a room. The island didn’t seem crowded at all.

Is October still a good month for going to the beach (Oahu) and swimming? I know you said mid to high 80’s, but as a Michigander, Lake Michigan is very very cold so the outside temp has to be into the 90’s before it’s really comfortable to swim. Thanks!

Yes, the water is warm enough to go swimming year round in Hawaii.

Hey guys my fiance and I were planning to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon in October 2018 do you have any personal favorite resorts that we could check out.

Will – there are many great Hawaii hotels for honeymoons. Here’s an article that will help you find one that’s perfect for you:

Also, you might want to consider a resort that has pools designated for adults only. See that list here: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2016/03/01/hawaii-hotels-with-adults-only-pools/

Hi, my sister and I are going to Honolulu end of October 2017 (from Australia). Will Halloween be a big thing there? Thanks.

If you’re staying in Waikiki, you’ll likely people of all ages in costumes. Some restaurants and bars will probably host costume contests.

Hi, we are thinking of going to Kauai in The fall. Do we need to worry about hurricanes?

Read this article about hurricanes in Hawaii: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2011/05/09/hurricane-season-in-hawaii/

Do I need to bring a wetsuit for my 3 year old? We will be staying near Waikiki Beach on October

We don’t know why you would need a wetsuit unless you are concerned about the box jellyfish: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2013/05/16/lets-talk-hawaii-water-safety-again/

Thank you for the information. However, one thing I would like to read about in your articles that I feel is missing is the water information. I realize there are a lot of things to do in Hawaii that doesn’t include the water but there are a lot of people (me included) that would like to know water temperatures, seasonal jellyfish/man-o-war issues, etc. We visited the Waimanalo area in Sep 2011 and I was stung by a Portuguese Man-o-war. Not fun. If you could add that info to your articles, it would be awesome and appreciated. Thanks for the info.

This article discusses all the seasonal aspects to consider when traveling to Hawaii in October and comparing one month to another. It’s about Octobers in Hawaii in general and is not year specific.

The jellyfish arrive every month, not just October. We cover jellyfish in this article: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2013/05/16/lets-talk-hawaii-water-safety-again/

The water temperature only vary by 5 degrees F throughout the year as stated in the FAQs here: https://www.govisithawaii.com/hawaii-weather/

I know Oct is a good time to go to hawaii but when is a good time to purchase a low cost package trip? ive heard late aug due to school being back in session. Is this true?

We have never seen or heard of any data that indicates the best time to purchase a package trip.

Thank you so much for helpful information!

I just found that award tickets became available from my frequent flyer program and I want to use this chance that will help us to invest in resort/hotel more than we were thinking. Time is Oct 25 and return flight is on Nov 7..

From above I can see October is good but what about late Oct – early Nov? This is the first trip to Hawai and we will be traveling with 4 kids, so swimming outdoor is a big deal.

There’s really not a great deal of difference between October and November. Hawaii is located close to the equator, so there aren’t vast swings in weather. Weather conditions are unpredictable, though, as are ocean conditions.

Read our article on November in Hawaii: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2014/10/14/is-november-a-good-month-to-go-to-hawaii/

See our article on the best places to stay with kids with swimming in mind: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2016/02/10/where-are-the-best-places-for-family-vacations-in-hawaii/

Thank you! You are amazing

I’ve heard that Halloween in Waikiki is fun and festive. We mistakenly booked our trip to be there on Halloween and our 3 year old will likely be a bit sad we won’t be home to trick or treat. Are there neighborhoods near Waikiki/Pearl City where people hand out candy? We’ll have a rental car so getting around shouldn’t be a problem

That’s such a localized question about neighborhoods for trick or treating that it would best be answered by the concierge at your hotel or other knowledgeable local.

As the time draws nearer, look into any special Halloween events that the Waikiki (or beyond) shopping centers may offer. That may be safer, convenient and easier option compared to finding and going into an unfamiliar neighborhood. In Waikiki, there’s the International Marketplace, Royal Hawaiian Center and Waikiki Beachwalk shopping centers.

Additionally check the local paper for special events for kids.

Thanks Sheila! I didn’t even think of checking with our hotel!

Going to Hawaii this October (staying on the big island) and can’t decide which other island for two-day visit. Which do you suggest and activities?

I’d also be interested in which other islands to visit apart from Oahu.

They’re all wonderful and worthy of visiting. Which one you visit should be based on your interests. Check out our post on how to choose the best Hawaiian Island(s) for you: https://www.govisithawaii.com/2010/06/28/how-to-pick-the-best-hawaiian-islands-for-your-vacation/

We love the idea of the Hawaii Food and Wine Festival! We are planning a trip to the islands in fall 2018 and wonder if you know on which dates the Festival will take place?

We do not have that information. Check directly with the organizers. Probably later this year or early next year they will have announced the 2018 dates and locations.

Hi, we are planning to visit Hawaii in October 2018. We travel as a family of 7, husband, wife, 3 kids( 6,5,2) and 2 grandparents. We like to have some freedom and comfort like home. Hi! Our trip to the big island (Kona) starts October 25th, 2018…yep, week after next. I see that rain is in the forecast almost every day. Do you know, by way of recent experience, is rain mostly night or day????

There are no reliable forecasts that far away.

Mostly night as mentioned in the third paragraph.

You’ll find this article to be helpful https://www.govisithawaii.com/2016/07/20/will-it-rain-during-my-hawaii-vacation-and-other-hawaii-rainfall-questions-answered/

Coincidentally, we’ll be on the Big Island at the same time. So, I join you in praying for pleasant weather. 🙂

If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii in 2024, you’re in for a treat. With sparkling waters, stunning sand beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes, and more, Hawaii is an amazing vacation destination. After living in Hawaii for five years (and now making multiple trips back per year), we learned a thing or two about planning the perfect vacation.

Here are the best tips that you need to know to help you have an amazing trip, whether it’s your first time or your 50th:

Jump to some of our most helpful resources: – We’ll help you pick which island is right for you – Learn about the best time to visit Hawaii – Head over to our Where to Stay directory to find the perfect resort or vacation rental – Get all the details on the cost of a Hawaii Vacation for a family and the cost for two

Planning a Trip to Hawaii: What to know before your trip

1. can you visit maui in 2024.

The short answer is: Yes, you can visit Maui in 2024 and the island is welcoming visitors.

After the devastating Lahaina fire in August of 2023, many people cancelled their trips. Travel to the area was discouraged as the community, government, and nonprofits worked to stabilize the area.

While Lahaina is a culturally significant area and was a vibrant community, travel to the town is closed for the foreseeable future as it’s being rebuilt. However, the remainder of Maui is open and welcoming visitors. The other areas of the island were not damaged by the fire in Lahaina.

You can read more on our Maui Fire Update page .

2. What island should you visit?

The first and most important step in planning a trip to Hawaii is to pick the island or islands you want to visit. While the islands do share similarities, there are enough differences that it’s important to spend time deciding which island is right for you.

This video we made will help you pick the perfect island for your trip. But if you’re short on time, and can’t watch it just yet we have  a quick quiz to help you narrow down your options .

Head to Oahu if : you enjoy the nightlife, great food, and a cosmopolitan vacation. It’s also the  best island in Hawaii for hiking .

Fly to Maui if : beaches, snorkeling , and great resorts are your thing.  It’s also the best Hawaiian island for snorkeling .

Pack your bags for the Big Island if : volcanoes, adventure, and swimming with manta rays is on your bucket list.

Kick your feet up in Kauai if : you love jagged cliffs, lush landscapes, food trucks , and a quieter, slower pace.

If multiple islands are calling your name, our island hopping guide will help you plan. You may also want to consider opting for a cruise, we have you covered there, too!

3. What’s the best time of year to visit Hawaii?

There is truly no bad time to visit Hawaii, but there are some factors that make certain times of the year more optimal than others. When we think of the best time to visit Hawaii (or the worst ) we like to break down when to visit based on the best weather, the best cost, and the fewest crowds.

In general, we think that the best time to visit any Hawaiian island is during the shoulder season: September/October and April/May.

Hawaii trip planning weather

Here’s how we came to that decision:

Hawaii is located in the tropics, which means that you will have warm weather year-round. But there are definitely months of higher rainfall. And if you want to have the best chance of avoiding rain on your trip, you shouldn’t visit during those months.

The chart below breaks down the average rainfall by month for each island. Note, rain varies on different sides of each island — we are showing average rainfall for one popular visitor destination on each island.

planning a trip to Hawaii

A trip to Hawaii is expensive. And coming during a peak time, like between Christmas and New Year, can make your trip even more expensive. If you want your travel dollars to go further and get better deals on accommodations and flights, the best time to visit is during May, September, October, and November. During these months you’ll find better deals on hotel rooms and vacation rental stays. Our full cost breakdown for a family of four to Oahu helps explain the costs.

If you want to know how we budget, book, and reduce the cost of our travel, check out our article on booking a trip to Hawaii .

Avoiding the crowds can mean the difference between getting on the boat tour that you’re excited about or staying on shore. Or finding parking at the beach that you want to visit.

Just like most vacation destinations, Hawaii has very clear busy periods and slower periods. The  Hawaii Tourism Authority does a great job of tracking visitor  arrivals to Hawaii and it’s clear that if you want to avoid crowds, February, April, May, September, and October are the months to visit.

That said, if you’re coming to Hawaii for something very specific, like whale watching, you’re going to be a little less flexible with your timing. Whale season runs from mid-December through mid-April, so showing up outside of those months would be a disappointment.

4. How long should your trip to Hawaii be?

Getting away for a vacation can be difficult, but you want to stay long enough to make it worth your while. Hawaii is not a quick trip, even from the west coast. Plan on a 5-hour plane ride and a few hour time difference. So heading to Hawaii for just a few days will make your trip feel rushed and exhausting.

We think that the minimum amount of time you should plan for a trip to Hawaii is one week. During that week you’ll be able to stay on one island and explore a few different areas. You can make the most of your time by using one of our step-by-step itineraries.

If you can, stay longer and see more. And if you plan to island hop , your trip needs to be much longer than one week.

If you know what island you’re planning to head to, you can dive into more of our advice with these articles:

5. Where should you stay? Hotel or vacation rental?

hawaii travel october

Once you know what island you’re visiting, it’s time to book your accommodations. The first big decision comes down to booking a hotel or a vacation rental.

Stay in a hotel if you’re looking for a resort experience: big pools, great service, and daily housekeeping. Book a vacation rental if you are traveling with a group, want more space, and would prefer to have a kitchen instead of eating out every meal.

Still on the fence? You can  read our full breakdown of whether you should choose a hotel or vacation rental for your Hawaii vacation .

If you know what island you’re visiting, we have specific advice on where to stay on each island — locations, hotels, and vacation rentals. Check out our island-specific travel guides:

6. Do you need a rental car?

To fully enjoy your vacation, you probably need to rent a car. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to rent it for the entire duration of your stay, especially if you’re staying in Waikiki.

hawaii travel october

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu and you’re staying in Waikiki, there may be days where your rental car is never used. There’s a lot to do within that 2-mile strip! You can save on expensive hotel parking fees by just renting a car on days that you want to explore the rest of the island. Rental car companies have offices in Waikiki which makes it convenient to pick up a car and take it out for the day.

There is also a car share company, Drive Hui, that is available in Waikiki.

On the other islands, it’s a bit trickier to go without a car. To see and explore, you’ll probably want to book one. We love using  Discount Hawaii Car Rental  to help us get the best price for a rental car on each island.

Set on not getting a car for your entire trip? Here are some  creative ways to visit Maui without a rental car and here is an itinerary for Oahu without a rental car .

7. How much does a trip to Hawaii cost?

Let’s be blunt: a trip to Hawaii is never cheap. There are definitely ways to save money, but it’s still an expensive destination to visit.

To help you get an idea of how much you should plan on spending (or how much you’ll need to save up), we calculated the cost for a family of 4. We estimate that an average trip cost for a family of four for 10 days is approximately $13,000. You can  read all about how we got that Hawaii trip cost estimate here . But remember this is an initial estimate. Your trip cost will vary based on when you go, what island you visit, and how you want to spend or save your money.

How does an (almost) free trip to Hawaii sound? With all our Hawaii travel, we’ve nailed down using points to book luxury vacations practically free. We started our sister site Booked With Points to show you how to use points and miles in Hawaii too!

8. How far in advance should you book your trip to Hawaii?

The travel tip we give over and over is: for the best vacation experience, book early. Don’t get disappointed with the lack of availability of rental cars, completely sold-out tours and luaus, and no restaurant reservation availability.

To avoid disappointment, book these things early:

Rental Cars

We recommend booking a rental car when you book a flight. That way you know you have something reserved for you and you won’t be stuck with a 2 door coupe for $500/day for your family of five.

Because it’s important to book your rental car early, we always use and recommend  Discount Hawaii Car Rental . They almost always have the best prices (seriously we’ve saved thousands with them), they book with national carriers, and you don’t have to pre-pay your reservation. So you’re welcome to check prices as often as possible and if you find that prices have dropped, you can cancel your reservation and just make a new one.

Right now we’re seeing some seriously low plane fares from the mainland to Hawaii so people are snatching up seats before looking at the rest of their trip. While plane tickets are cheap lodging is absolutely not. You may be able to find some deals here and there, but we recommend looking at (or even better, booking!) lodging when you book that flight.

Hawaii Trip Planning Tours and Activities

Tours and activities

If there is a specific tour or activity that you know you want to do, consider booking it a few months in advance. Luaus and popular tours book up very early, especially during the busier months.

We’ve put together  a list of our favorite tours on each island , to help you get started planning. It took us 18 months and a lot of testing out tours, but we have a list of tours for each island that we’re excited to share.

We have discounts with many of our favorite tour companies, find all our Hawaii Vacation Guide Coupon Codes here .

Entry tickets

There are a number of natural landmarks in Hawaii that require a ticketed entry. The state is trying to protect the natural resources and land by making sure that each spot doesn’t have too many visitors at one time. But with some advanced planning, you can secure your ticketed entry to some of these beautiful locations.

A few popular spots that require ticketed entry include:

  • Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve: tickets may be reserved two days in advance of your visit.  Book a Hanauma Bay reservation here .
  • Haleakala Sunrise Entry: bookings can be made 60 days in advance (with additional tickets being released two days prior to the date you want to visit).  Book sunrise reservations here . Also consider,  should you go to Haleakala for sunrise or sunset ?
  • Haena State Park: Plan your visit to this park on the north shore of Kauai and  book tickets 30 days in advance .

We lay out all the necessary reservation timelines in our island itineraries.  They make your planning so much easier .

“So excited. We have been  loving your itinerary !!! We would have paid triple the price for this. It’s so valuable!” – Sara C.

Hawaii Trip Planning restaurants

Restaurants

If you are hoping to hit up the most popular restaurants in Hawaii, planning ahead is crucial. But how far in advance they accept reservations varies. For example, Mama’s Fish House on Maui accepts reservations 6 months in advance. But Merriman’s on Maui only accepts reservations 30 days in advance. Here are our favorite Wailea and Kihei restaurants , if you plan to go to Maui.

Don’t forget:  all of our island itineraries  have specific instructions on when and how to make reservations for restaurants, activities, and sights on your trip.

Leaving Maui right now (literally about to board) and we LOVED your wayfinder itinerary. Always had great places to see and yummy food to eat wherever we went! Laura

Cruising Hawaii Guide

9. how many islands should you visit on your trip to hawaii.

You’re making a big trip to Hawaii and you want to see as much as possible, but do you have enough time to visit more than one island?  We recommend that if you’re taking a one week trip, you stick to one island . There is a lot to see on each island and you could stay as busy as you’d like to for more than a week, easily. If your trip is 10+ days, you could add on a second island to visit, but know that you will be moving around a bit more and you probably won’t get to see everything on each island that you were hoping to see.

While the islands in Hawaii are close together and just a quick 30-45 minute flight, your island hopping travel day will still cut into your vacation. Between packing up, the airport process, and checking into accommodations on your new island, this can easily take up half a day of your vacation.

Of course, you can always ignore this sensible advice, like a few of our newsletter readers, and read up on visiting all 4 major Hawaiian islands in just 2 weeks .

Hawaii Trip Planning Maui

While you’re in Hawaii:

Once you’ve landed in Hawaii, congratulations! Soak up that sunshine and start living that epic vacation life. Here are some important details to know now that you’re on island time.

10. Understand the geography

Geography on the islands is important because it will affect the weather you experience and what you do while on vacation. One big thing to understand about geography is that each island has a windward and a leeward side.

The windward side of each island faces the tradewinds. Here you’ll get more rain and wind, but you’ll also get lush landscapes (thanks to all of that rain!). The leeward side of each island is more protected from the wind and rain and you will have drier, sunnier weather. Most of the famously beautiful beaches you plan on visiting are located on the leeward side of the island.

For example, on Maui, the leeward side of the island includes some great beaches, like Wailea Beach and Ka’anapali Beach. The windward side of the island is home to the Road to Hana and a lot of beautiful waterfalls.

When you understand the island’s geography, you can better prepare for what to expect. If you’re looking for a lush, jungle experience, with waterfalls and greenery head east to the windward side. If you’re looking to beat the rain and get some sun, the west or leeward side is your best bet.

11. Eat local

One of the treats about visiting a new place is the opportunity to try new, local foods that you might not eat back home. Eating local is one of nine ways to have an authentic Hawaiian experience .

There are a few things you should consider trying while you’re here:

  • Fresh, locally caught fish:  If you’re a seafood fan, don’t miss out on the fresh fish. You can enjoy it at either a restaurant or from a fish market. You’ll see options like Mahi Mahi, Ono, Opah, Ahi, and more.
  • Locally grown produce:  Enjoy dragon fruit, coconut, lilikoi, pineapples, locally produced honey and more. We love doing farm tours, but if that’s not part of your vacation itinerary, try a farm-to-table restaurant. You’ll get to sample some island flavors while supporting the agriculture industry here.
  • Traditional Hawaiian food:  You don’t need to go to a luau to sample some traditional Hawaiian dishes. Look for dishes like poi (taro that has been pounded into a paste), laulau (meat wrapped and cooked in taro leaves), kalua pig (slow-roasted pork cooked in an underground oven), and poke (diced, raw fish that is wonderfully flavored).
  • Shave ice:  Not shaved ice. You may think that this is like a snowcone, but it couldn’t be further from it. Soft fluffy ice shavings that are flavored with different syrups and creative flavor combinations. You might also have the add-on of fruit and ice cream. It’s so, so good.  Don’t forget to check out our  five favorite shave ice spots on Kauai .

Sample straight from the ground.  Check out our favorite farm tours on Maui.

12. See the can’t-miss sights

The beaches in Hawaii are incredible. But there’s a lot more to explore on each of the islands. And, some of these can’t-miss activities can only be done in Hawaii .

Some things you might want to add to your list include:

  • Night snorkeling or diving with Manta Rays on the Big Island
  • Seeing the sunrise or sunset from Haleakala Crater on Maui
  • Watching the big wave surfers on the north shore of Oahu
  • Viewing the stunning cliffs of the NaPali coast on Kauai
  • Hanging out with humpback whales during their annual migration to Hawaii

This was just a taste, but there is so much more. If you want to view the highlights of each island,  check out our cheat sheets .

Not only do these island cheat sheets highlight the top 4 can’t-miss sights and activities on each island, you’ll also get tips on where to stay, a map of the island with the main sights, towns, and airport locations, the top places for food on each island, and more.

If you want a full bucket list of everything you can enjoy in Hawaii, check out our list of the best things to do in Hawaii , organized by island. There are definitely some unexpected ideas on this list!

13. Bring the right (reef-safe) sunscreen

Before you throw your favorite brand of sunscreen into your bag, stop. Hawaii has rules in place to help protect the reef and sea life that are so important. One of those rules is around the type of sunscreen you can use. Sunscreens containing chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate are no longer sold in Hawaii. These chemicals have been found to contribute to coral reef bleaching.

You can check out a  full list of our favorite reef-safe sunscreens  and make sure you’re only using legal sunscreen in Hawaii.

Hawaii trip planning snorkeling

14. Snorkel to see amazing sea-life

Living here, we love spending our days in the ocean. There is nothing like diving into the warm, tropical waters and being greeted by colorful fish, turtles, octopi, and more. But if it’s your first time snorkeling in Hawaii, there are some essential details you should know.

Understand safety risks

Snorkeling may look easy, but water conditions, physical conditions, and more come into play. It’s not always as safe as it looks —  drowning is the number one cause of visitor death in Hawaii . Before you go out,  review the safety tips  to make sure you’re doing what you can to keep yourself safe.

Use good gear

Hear me out on this one. You’ll find a number of blogs telling you to pick up a cheap set of fins and a mask from an ABC store or Target once you arrive. There are a few reasons we don’t suggest that.

First, safety. Well fitting gear (fins that stay on and a mask that doesn’t leak) is important to keep you safe.

Second, it’s a significantly more enjoyable experience to snorkel in gear that fits well and is easy to use. This was apparent when we were trying to teach our preschooler to snorkel. The cheap gear didn’t cut it but once we got him in a good mask, he was off!

Third, buying cheap gear just adds to the already full landfill here.

That’s not to say you need to shell out and buy expensive gear. If you plan to snorkel many times, even after this trip to Hawaii, it’s worth it to buy good snorkeling gear. We have  sets listed on our recommendations page .

Otherwise, renting snorkeling gear is a great option. The shop staff can help you find gear that is the right fit for you. And if you find that it doesn’t work right, pop in and switch it out for a different rental set.

Go to the best places

All snorkeling spots are not created equal. Some spots on the island naturally have a more vibrant reef and are home to more fish and sea life. Other spots may be more affected by ocean swells at various times of the year.

On our guide pages we list out the best snorkeling spots on each island. You’ll want to check these pages out before hopping in the water:

And if you’re looking for the  best snorkeling spots in Hawaii by month , we have you covered.

Hawaii trip planning turtles

Take a snorkeling tour

While we love snorkeling from the beach and we do it often, going on a snorkeling tour is a really special experience. On a good snorkeling tour, you’ll learn about the ocean, the sea life, and be taken to some cool spots that aren’t easily accessible from the beach. Plus, you’ll be able to see the islands from the water, giving you a different perspective and appreciation for their beauty.

We have a  full list of our favorite activity providers and tours on each island,  but here are a few that are incredibly special:

  • Molokini Sunrise Snorkel with Kai Kanani : beat the crowds to Molokini with this special sunrise snorkeling tour leaving directly from the beach in Makena/Wailea.
  • Beach loading snorkeling trip from Ka’anapali : if you’re staying in Ka’anapali, you can’t get more convenient than this tour!
  • Na Pali Coast Snorkeling with Holo Holo Charters : Cruise up the coast of Kaua’i and off the island of Niihau for a full day of snorkeling.
  • Power Raft snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay with Captain Zodiac : Head to Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook monument for the best snorkeling on the island.

Understand the rules protecting sea life

When you’re snorkeling and enjoying the crystal clear water, it’s important to keep in mind that you want to make as little impact on the sea life as possible. Stay at least 10 feet away from turtles while snorkeling. You’re required to stay at least 50 feet away from Monk Seals. And if you see spinner dolphins, you’ll need to give them 50 yards of space.

15. Learn about the culture of the islands

Hawaii is a unique US state for many reasons but one thing that is important to understand is that Hawaii had a long and rich history before becoming part of the US. Learning a little about the culture and the history will enhance your stay and give you a new appreciation for these amazing islands.

There are plenty of ways to learn more about Hawai’i while you’re here. Consider visiting museums. On Oahu, we love visiting the Bishop Museum and Iolani Palace.

You can also visit heritage sites like Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park on the Big Island. You can  find a list of heritage sites to visit on the Hawaii Tourism Authority website .

You can also learn about the local culture, land, sea, and wildlife by volunteering. See if one of these 12 Hawaii Volunteer Programs has volunteer days during your stay. We also cover how to have an authentic Hawaii vacation in this article .

I’ve Lived in Hawaii Nearly All My Life — and These Are the Most Underrated Destinations in the Aloha State

From one of the only green-sand beaches in the world to the southernmost point in the U.S., these are the top places to visit in Hawaii, according to a local.

BackyardProduction/Getty Images

Hawaii has beckoned tourists away from their daily routines to experience paradise for years. Nearly 10 million people made the trek to the archipelago last year, a destination with a population of around 1.5 million. The Hawaiian islands offer accessible natural beauty throughout the year — from the mountains (known as mauka ) to the sea (called makai ). Think sun-drenched beaches with warm water, waterfalls hidden in rain forests, and sand in hues of white, black, and red. Perhaps what makes Hawaii so special to visitors is the spirit of aloha — a warm hospitality not found anywhere else — and a rich cultural heritage dating back centuries.

Hawaii is one of the most coveted destinations in the world, but travelers often merely scratch the surface of what the state has to offer. As someone who grew up in Honolulu — a popular tourist stop — and resides there currently, I see it all the time, but I don’t blame them. Tourism has been significant in Hawaii for so long, it seems like everything has been touched by visitors. It can be hard to distinguish what’s worth the crowds and early mornings (to beat traffic) and what’s truly Hawaiian or local.

Hawaii is more than meets the eye, and there’s a transformative experience awaiting visitors who want to go beyond the beaten path. If you’re looking to experience the spiritual power of the Aloha State's natural beauty and history, or see where the locals like to go , here are 10 underrated places to visit in Hawaii.

Waialae Avenue, Kaimuki

ozgurcoskun/Getty Images

Located a short drive from Waikiki, Waialae Avenue is the artery of Honolulu’s quaint Kaimuki neighborhood. The stores, restaurants, and coffee shops lining the street pulsate with energy. If you’re looking to purchase locally crafted goods, Waialae Avenue has you covered. In fact, there’s an entire movement dedicated to supporting the small businesses of the area, known as Keep It Kaimuki . I’ll typically start my day with a shaken iced latte concocted with locally sourced coconut syrup from Bean About Town before hitting some of my favorite stores like Da Shop , which carries books from Hawaii-connected authors, and browsing the creations of local fashion designers at Ten Tomorrow .

Stargazing Along East Oahu

Hawaii Tourism Authority/Dana Edmunds

If the skies are clear, you should make time for a nighttime adventure. My suggestion is to drive east out of Honolulu and into Hawaii Kai. Take the windy Kalanianaole Highway (carefully) to the Halona Blowhole parking lot, or all the way past Sandy Beach Park and stop along the beach. Away from the city lights, the stars and moon glow brightly across the vast sky. Aside from the beautiful view, stars hold cultural significance to Hawaiians — for centuries, they’ve been used for storytelling, ceremonies, and wayfinding by voyagers.

Yokohama Bay

People come to Hawaii for the beach , and while Waikiki may technically have one, it often feels too crowded to relax. For a true beach day, pack up some snacks and gear and head all the way west to Yokohama Bay. (Or, stop by Aloha Poke and grab a bowl of fresh rice and cubed ahi tuna to enjoy on the beach.) It’s the furthest west you can go on Oahu, and about a 1.-5-hour drive from Honolulu. Upon arriving, you'll be met with a wide stretch of golden sand that's surrounded by mountains. As long as there’s no northwest swell wrapping around the island, the turquoise waters are inviting. And since you’re facing the west, be sure to stay for the stunning sunset.

Lyon Arboretum

The flora of Hawaii is part of the state's allure: vibrant flowers like the plumeria and hibiscus; big, green, Jurassic Park-like foliage; and tropical fruits like mangoes and papayas that flourish naturally. The islands' distinctive geography and diverse climates give rise to a rich array of plant life, including unique endemic species that are exclusive to Hawaii, like the spiky, silver ʻāhinahina. You can spend some time learning about Hawaii's flora by visiting Lyon Arboretum in Honolulu’s Manoa neighborhood. Comprising 194 acres and more than 6,000 taxa of tropical and subtropical plants, Lyon Arboretum is a research center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and an outdoor museum of living plants with a mission to conserve Hawaii’s rare and native plants. Guests can meander the hiking trails or check out the botanical gardens on their own or with a guided tour.

Nakalele Blowhole

MNStudio/Getty Images

The majestic power of Mother Nature can be seen throughout the islands, but Maui’s Nakalele Blowhole is one of the best places to witness that force up close. Getting to the blowhole, located on the northern part of the island, requires a windy and scenic drive along Honoapiʻilani Highway. The parking area offers a good vantage point for seeing the blowhole and its surrounding dramatic lava rock coastline — and humpback whales in the wintertime. The more adventurous can take a 20-minute hike down steep and rocky terrain to some tide pools, making sure to heed any warning signs along the way. Before embarking, make sure to check the tide is high; otherwise, there isn't enough water for the blowhole to erupt. If you’re lucky, there will be a local stand selling banana bread.

Petroglyphs at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Tourism Authority/Tor Johnson

Perhaps one of the top attractions throughout the islands, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a dynamic, ever-changing landscape thanks to its active volcanoes. While the volcanoes may steal the show, there are other parts of the park that are worth visiting, too. One of those lesser-known spots is the Pu‘uloa Petroglyphs , with pu‘uloa meaning “long hill.” Considered a sacred place, this archaeological site has more than 23,000 petroglyph images, including geometric shapes, canoe sails, and other motifs representing the life of ancient Native Hawaiians. Visitors can take a short hike through a 500-year-old lava field and view the fragile petroglyphs from a boardwalk.

Wailua River State Park

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Nestled into the lush rain forests of the aptly named Garden Isle, the Iraivan Temple is remarkable for a few reasons: The South Asian temple design features ornate white granite intricately carved without power tools in Bangalore and India and assembled together on Kauai. Having the Hindu temple in Hawaii is also unique, as it gives visitors and locals a rare chance to experience Hindu philosophies. The backdrop of the Wailua River Valley, where an adjacent waterfall flows and there are many shades of green, adds to the tranquility. Visitors to the temple must book a reservation for personal meditation and worship. Once you've tapped into your serenity, spend some time in Wailua River State Park , less crowded than Waimea Canyon. The free state park is full of hiking trails to waterfalls and stunning views. For an immersive experience, take a two-mile river cruise filled with Hawaiian songs and stories by the family-owned Smith’s Kauai .

Hamakua Coast

Westend61/Getty Images

While the Kohala Coast gets lots of attention for its sunshine, pristine beaches, and array of resorts, the Hamakua Coast is Hawaii Island’s more rugged, verdant counterpart, with vibrant valleys and majestic waterfalls in a magical, rainy setting. Start your drive from Hilo via the Hamakua Heritage Corridor. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to stop at botanical gardens, waterfalls, and scenic outlooks. You’ll likely hit some crowds at the more popular spots like Rainbow Falls and Waipio Valley Lookout, but if it’s your first time to the island, these locations are still worth a visit. I recommend stopping for lunch and a tour at Hawaiian Vanilla Co. , a small, family-owned farm that offers vanilla-themed dishes and a tasting tour. The drive ends in the agricultural town of Waimea, and if you don't stop for lunch at the vanilla farm, grab a burger at Village Burger Waimea, where the beef is as fresh and local as possible.

Hawaii Island offers travelers the chance to visit Ka Lae , the southernmost point in the U.S. Holding much cultural significance, Ka Lae (or “the point” in Hawaiian) is believed to be where the first Polynesian voyagers landed in Hawaii and one of the earliest settlements on the islands. Evidence of the ancient Hawaiians remains there to this day, including an ancient fishing shrine, marked by stone walls and a platform where fish was once prepared. To get there, drive to the end of South Point Road in Naʻalehu on Hawaii Island until you reach the 69 and 90 mile markers. You’ll be perched atop high cliffs where the ocean crashes below. Once you finish reveling in this sacred space, head over to Papakolea Beach, one of just four green-sand beaches in the world.

Hanalei Pier

Hanalei Pier is a must-visit spot on Kauai . Walk out onto the pier, where local kids like to jump off, and soak in the sweeping vistas of the bay, veiled in rain clouds and teeming with vibrant greenery. Hanalei is my favorite surf spot, where the cold river water meets the warm, salty sea. If you’re not experienced, you can always sit and watch people ride the waves, called heʻe nalu in Hawaiian. While in Hanalei, combine your visit with some responsible tourism and leave Hawaii better than when you arrived.

You can volunteer at the Waipā Foundation , a living learning center that perpetuates Hawaiian values and stewards more than 1,600 acres of land. Every fourth Saturday of the month, the public is welcomed to help take care of the land — whether reforesting native plants or restoring a fishpond — in an action called malama 'aina .

I went to Hawaii for the first time. My trip would've been better if I'd known these 5 things before I left.

  • I visited Hawaii for the first time, and there are things I wish I'd known before the trip.
  • Figuring out that there's more than one Leonard's Bakery on Oahu would've saved me some stress.
  • I also wish I'd known how easy it would be to get around the island — I could've explored even more.

Insider Today

Well over 1 million people have already visited the Hawaiian Islands this year, and I was lucky enough to be one of them.

I went on a nine-day trip to Oahu that included a stay at Disney's Aulani Resort in Ko Olina.

Because this was my first time visiting Hawaii, I tried to do as much research as possible before my trip. But after arriving, I still wished I'd known a few things.

I thought it would be much harder to get around the island.

hawaii travel october

Before leaving for Oahu, I'd heard from friends and read on social-media groups that getting around could be difficult. My fears of sitting in traffic for the whole week set in before I even stepped foot off the plane.

In reality, my family and I never got stuck in gridlocked traffic over our six days on the island.

A hotel worker we met said no matter what part of the island you were on, the big secret was to head out after 9 a.m. and try to make your way back either before 3 p.m. or after 6 p.m.

My family and I followed this rule every day of our trip and never had much traffic to deal with while we traveled from Ko Olina to Pearl Harbor and Ko Olina to the North Shore.

We also found the drivers to be much more courteous than we're used to back in Florida. No one weaved in and out of the cars around us.

The kind of sunscreen you pack matters.

hawaii travel october

My packing list for Hawaii was long, but one of the most important items was sunscreen. Hawaii is close to the equator, so the UV rays are even stronger on the islands.

But I wished I'd known more about the islands' rules around reef-safe sunscreen before I started packing.

Hawaii passed a law banning the sale of sunscreens with the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate that went into effect in 2021. And some counties allow only mineral-based sunscreens.

I ended up using Sun Bum sunscreen throughout my stay, and now that I know more, I'll continue to use it in Florida to help protect coral reefs.

I wish I'd known there's more than one Leonard’s Bakery on the island.

hawaii travel october

One of the most talked about spots on Oahu is Leonard's Bakery , known for its Portuguese-style doughnuts named malasadas.

The main store is near Honolulu, which was about a 40-minute drive from where we were staying. I'd pretty much accepted that we'd have to budget a few hours one day to try the sugary treats.

But once we landed on Oahu, we noticed a Leonard's Bakery food truck — lovingly named Malasadamobiles — about 10 minutes from the resort.

The truck dished out hot malasadas to order, but it didn't offer the main bakery's extended menu. That was the only real trade-off for us, but it was worth it to save on driving time.

The weather can change depending on what side of the island you’re on.

hawaii travel october

The weather can be drastically different around Oahu. For instance, when my family left Ko Olina on the western side of the island to drive to the North Shore, the sun was out, and it was very warm.

About an hour into our drive, we passed by Kualoa Ranch (a filming location for "Jurassic Park"), and it was suddenly cooler and cloudy.

Once we got to the North Shore, the sun was back out, and we were able to enjoy our day of beach hopping.

Learning a few key Hawaiian phrases goes a long way with locals.

hawaii travel october

Knowing some key sayings and phrases in a native language goes a long way with locals, no matter where you're traveling. I knew some basic Hawaiian words — such as "aloha" (hello) and "mahalo" (thank you) — but I wish I'd learned a few more.

While I was there, one new phrase I learned that came in handy was "a hui hou," which means "until we meet again."

We stayed in some spots for a few days, so it was nice to say that to the people we'd connected with on our way out.
