Whale Watching in Maine: The Complete Guide

Frequently Asked Questions

From spring through early fall, large populations of migratory whales traverse the cold waters of the Gulf of Maine, which stretches from Nova Scotia, Canada, to Massachusetts' Cape Cod. These sea giants are a sight to behold in their natural habitat, and whale watching cruises that depart from Maine ports will take you up close to these fantastic mammals for photo ops and a learning opportunity, unlike anything you can experience on dry land. Plan your Maine whale watching excursion with this guide to the best tour providers, what you'll see, and how to best prepare for your voyage.

The Best Time to See Whales in Maine

Maine's whale watching season kicks off in mid-April, as ravenous whales arrive to feed just 20 miles off the Maine coast. Their feeding area is an underground plateau known as Jeffreys Ledge , which lies just about 150 to 200 feet beneath the water's surface. The ledge provides a rich food source for whales, which feast primarily on herring. Whales can reliably be spotted through late October when they begin to head south to warmer waters.

The Gulf of Maine is notoriously foggy, and the fog is at its worst when the difference between the water and air temperature is greatest. For the best visibility, book a whale watching tour for a summer day when clear skies are forecast. You may want to check the Northeast Offshore Waters Forecast before making a reservation.

From south to north, whale watching tours depart from Kennebunkport, Portland , Boothbay Harbor, Bar Harbor , Milbridge, and Lubec, Maine.

The Best Maine Whale Watching Tours

From south to north, whale watching tours depart from Kennebunkport, Portland , Boothbay Harbor, Bar Harbor , Milbridge, and Lubec, Maine. These tour boats are tops if you're hoping to see whales on your Maine vacation:

  • Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co. : With more than 25 years of experience and more than a million passengers served, this Bar Harbor-based tour company is your best bet if you want to whale-watch on your trip to Acadia National Park. You'll have the option to combine whale and puffin watching on an extended trip: It's tough to resist the chance to spy on these clown-faced birds. If you don't spot whales, you'll receive a voucher for a future trip.
  • First Chance Whale Watch : Cruise out of Kennebunkport on one of Maine's newest whale watching boats. "Nick's Chance," a modern, 87-foot vessel launched in 2006, has two decks and a spacious bow area that provide excellent viewing opportunities. Your expert captain doesn't just know where to find the whales: He'll point out seals, dolphins, birds, and other creatures you encounter on your cruise.
  • Cap'n Fish's Whale Watch : If you're eco-minded and impatient, you'll be drawn to Maine's most environmentally friendly whale watching boat. Not only does this company's vessel exceed emissions regulations, but it's also fast. And that means less time waiting patiently to see whales. Round trips are just three hours, and they depart from Boothbay Harbor once or twice daily from May into October.
  • Odyssey Whale Watch : "Odyssey," a 65-foot fiberglass boat with upper and lower decks, does four-hour whale watches out of Portland Harbor. Whale sightings are guaranteed, or your next trip is free (must be redeemed within three years).

Types of Whales You Can See

Hundreds of humpback whales, popular among whale watching enthusiasts for their friendliness and spectacular breaching, flipper-slapping, and lobtailing, populate the area off the coast of Maine. Minke, finback, and a few North Atlantic right whales also spend their summers and fall in the Gulf of Maine. Before the whaling days of the early 1900s, there were 10,000 right whales. Only just over 400 are believed to exist today, and scientists fear they're headed toward extinction.

Most whales have marks that can be used to tell individuals apart. Humpback whales' unique markings on the underside of their tails make them one of the easiest to identify. A distinctive pattern of black and white, different on every animal, can range from all-white to all-black and everything in between.

What to Expect on a Maine Whale Watching Trip

Once you're aboard your chosen whale watching boat, expect to spend an hour or more cruising out to where the whales frolic and feed. Passengers typically sit out on decks in the sun or duck into an enclosed cabin to enjoy a snack and break from the wind. Be sure to wear sunscreen.

If you're lucky, you might see a school of Atlantic white-sided dolphins in the water as you head out to your destination. When you reach Jeffreys Ledge, your tour boat will circle as you scour the horizon for the telltale columns of white created when a whale expounds air through its blowhole. Sometimes as high as 20 feet, these columns can be spotted as far as two miles away. Listen intently, too, for the rushing sound.

Once there's a shout like "Starboard! Three o'clock!" or "Port! Nine o'clock!" you'll know a whale has been spotted. Everyone aboard rushes to that side of the boat, binoculars raised and cameras pointed. Wear rubber-soled, sturdy shoes. You might glimpse a humpback whale breaching 100 feet away. Or see a pair of minke whales slicing through the water, repeatedly breaking the surface. Typically, you'll get to watch whales putting on a show for an hour or so, sending you rushing from one side of the boat to the other as your captain or an onboard naturalist shares knowledge of whales, including some specific individual creatures you'll see. A collective gasp escapes from the whale watchers whenever one of the giant mammals lobtails (breaches enough to show his tail). It is a magnificent sight you won't ever forget.

Back ashore, you'll be tired, windblown, and possibly mildly queasy if the Gulf of Maine is choppy, but you'll also feel a sense of exhilaration after seeing one of Earth's most fascinating creatures.

Whale-watching season kicks off in mid-April and runs through October.

OVER 1,000 5-STAR REVIEWS!

The crew was fantastic and went out of their way to find whales. I highly recommend this excursion.

We enjoyed getting to see what came up with the traps and getting to hold a live lobster. It was a good length of a tour and I'd definitely recommend it for the kids or adults like me who are still kids at heart. The ship captain and naturalist were very friendly and great guides.

We booked a whale watching tour through this company. It was a great experience we saw several whales and porpoise and dolphins while on the tour. The crew and staff were great and they really took time to make our tour extra special. We highly recommend this company to all who want to experience an once in a lifetime experience.

During our adventure we saw seals, the infamous puffins, bald eagles along with many other critters as well. The crew were accommodating, professional, a little humorous, and knowledgeable. Highly recommend if you're up for a boat ride in the Bar Harbor area.

So fun! Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, the boat had plenty of room to walk around and the captain did a great job making sure we could all see the landmarks they were pointing out. I’d go again!

Interesting history of Bar Harbor area coupled with eagles, hawks, cormorants, gannets and other sea birds. Good narration by our naturalist, Ruth, who was informative and interesting. Enjoyed the lighthouses and seeing the diverse harbors and island shores.

We loved both Captain Edwin and narrator Andy. Both were so gracious, clearly caring about everyone's comfort and involvement. The knowledge that both shared regarding the local seas, lobsters, crabs, seals, and landmarks was very interesting and informative. We caught a variety of sea life in the traps - lobster, crabs, and a sea cucumber. We spotted dozens of seals. The boat itself was stable, clean, and well maintained. It had flaps to protect from high winds and sea spray, but you are allowed to open the flaps as you want. I am someone who can get seasick easily, but I did not feel even the bit queasy. They do post a sign at the dock on the day of your tour that states the sea sickness level, so if it indicates a high level of sea sickness, you can take Dramamine or other in advance. Kids and adults alike enjoyed this tour and it was very interactive.

The boat is roomy, both inside ans out on the decks; staff friendly and knowledgeable. The sound system is nice and clear so all guests can hear what the naturalist is saying about the wildlife. And...oh...the whales!!! It was amazing, and I hope to do it again. Well worth the price.

On this once in a lifetime experience, we chose to go with this whale 🐋 watching 👀 tour There are many companies that offer varying tours, and this is the only one I've ever experienced, so can only speak about this one; nor do I have anything to compare it to. This experience was 100% as expected (and advertised) with zero surprises. The Captain, crew, ancillary staff,safety/security personnel and tour guide were all highly trained, knowledgeable, courteous, professional, & welcoming. It was just a fantastic overall 'refreshing' vibe. The scenery was nothing short of amazing, awe-inspiring, and magical. We saw EIGHT humpback whales!!! I am a seasoned world traveler, have visited numerous bucket list places, and have done literally hundreds of excursions through Trip Advisor and similar platforms. I 100%, would do this again if the opportunity presented itself. For others? I highly, highly recommend this experience. 👌

We went on the lighthouse tour and it was wonderful! The guide did a fabulous job informing us about lighthouses, history of the area and alerting us to wildlife. Highly recommend this tour!

The captain and crew went off their route to find interesting sights and sea life for our cruise. The Naturalist on board was knowledgeable and interesting. Highly recommend it!

We had a great experience with the Nature Cruise, we learned a lot about the area and saw some great scenic views! I highly recommend binoculars, you can rent some on the boat, but they’re limited. We got to see seals, porpoises, and a few bald eagles, which was really cool because I had never seen one before and they were what I wanted to see most! I definitely plan on going back again for more cruises!

The Best Harbor Boat Tours In Maine!

Cap'n Fish's Cruises

Everyone on staff was helpful and knowledgable. Easy to book online, easy to find. The kids love seeing seals and we had a great time. Everyone else on the boat seemed to be having fun too and there were great photo opportunities. Would definitely go again!

Have done several tours in the past and this one was better than I remember!. Boat comfortable, captain a wonderful tour guide. Would love to repeat the tour again soon. Dont hesitate this is the best you will find.

This was a great way to see the coast line around Boothbay! Beautiful fall day. The ship guide/captain was very informative and they took their time going around the islands and sharing lots of information about the landmarks and wildlife. We really enjoyed to ride, it was well worth the time and money!

We took the Captain's Combo trip and were extremely pleased. The boat, Pink Lady II was clean and in excellent condition. The captain not only piloted the boat well, he was also a very knowledgable narrator. The route taken on the trip included lighthouses, bays, wildlife, and our favorite, the working fishing village of South Bristol. Great trip.

Cruise was excellent. Captain was excellent. Running commentary was very informative. Cruise was just the proper length, not too long and not too short. All in all a very pleasant experience. I would recommend this for anyone in the area who would like to see the area by sea.

This was my second time on this cruise and I liked it just as much. The water was rougher this time so the captain changed the route just a little to get us in calmer water. We saw seals sunning on the rocks and trees just starting to turn color. I took my adultdaughter who's from New York city and she thought the views were beautiful. It gave her a very realxing change of scene. Both the captain's narration and the demonstration of lobstering were full of intriguing facts.

We took the 2 hour cruise around islands and rivers near Boothbay Harbor. The boat was first class and the captain was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the marine life and landscape and the crew was most accommodating. An excellent value as well. Highly recommended.

I can honestly say that this was the best boat see tour we ever did. We did the captains special the first time and were so pleased with the knowledge of the captain explaining everything along the trip that we decided to do the Kennebec River tour two days later. We saw seals, lighthouses, bald eagles and all kinds of birds. We had the same captain on both rides and were so impressed with his narration during the trip. Would highly recommend this to anyone. The price was decent too for all the sights you get to see and the great personality of the captain.

  • Moose Watching

Where to See Moose

Moose can be spotted diving for dinner in wet boggy areas, chilling out in gravel pits, and doing some sightseeing of their own on hiking or snowmobile trails. Their population is greatest in the Western Lakes and Mountains regions, the Kennebec Valley , the Maine Highlands , and Aroostook County . Baxter State Park and Lazy Tom Bog are great places to begin your search.

Several Maine State Park Campgrounds make good basecamps for regional moose watching. Rangeley Lake State Park , Mount Blue State Park , Lily Bay State Park , and Peaks-Kenny State Park are all campground parks located in or near parts of Maine with ample moose-watching opportunities.

Planning a trip with the kids and don’t want to leave spotting a moose to chance? Pay a visit to the Maine Wildlife Park where you’re guaranteed to spot a moose, among many other kinds of fascinating creatures, at this special wildlife sanctuary.

When to See Moose

The best times to spot moose are at dusk and dawn from mid-May through July and again in the fall during their breeding season. Fall is when the impressive antlers of the bull moose are fully formed. They will shed their antlers in November or December and grow new, larger antlers in the spring. It’s one of those rites of passage you’d have to be a moose to fully appreciate.

Moose Tours & Safaris

To up your chances of seeing a moose in Maine, or to put your wildlife photography skills to the test, contact one of the outfitters that specialize in moose watching tours, also known as moose safaris. You ’ll have the opportunity to safely and comfortably view these magnificent creatures and other wildlife as you learn about moose habits and habitat from a knowledgeable guide. At the right time of year, you can spot as many as twenty moose in one outing. That’s enough to start their own moose lodge.

  • Whale Watching

When to See Whales

The best time for whale watching is mid-April to October. It begins when migrating whales arrive in spring, hungry for action and the all-you-can-eat aqua buffet of sand eels, copepods, plankton, and fish. Having had their fill – while filling camera disks and memory banks – the whales head south in October to warmer waters.

Where to See Whales

Whales can be seen up and down Maine’s coastline, but are best viewed by booking a whale watching boat tour.

In addition to whales, a number of other marine creatures will be waiting to make your acquaintance – seals and dolphins among them. As it turns out, they’ve been in social networks a lot longer than we have.

Whale Watching Trips

whale watching tours old orchard beach maine

Where to See Puffins

Maine’s coastal islands are the only place in the U.S. where you’ll find nesting sites for Atlantic puffins. So where in Maine is the best puffin habitat for puffin watching?

Let’s start with the Project Puffin Visitor Center in Rockland. The center is the landing spot for Project Puffin, an ongoing partnership of the Audubon Society, local businesses and private donors to bring puffins and other rare birds back to their historic nesting grounds. Visitors can view a live camera feed of puffin activity and learn about conservation efforts to protect puffins and other seabirds of Maine.

Then, you can catch a puffin tour boat from Mt. Desert Island or mainland ports like Jonesport, Cutler, Bar Harbor, Millbridge, Stonington, Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor and Port Clyde.

Puffin Tour Information

Machias Seal Island is a bit out of the way and you’ll need to book a guided tour to get there, but if you’re a committed puffin fan, the effort will justify the experience. “Seal Island” (don’t let the name fool you) is the only island you can actually land on and observe puffins from behind blinds. The island is teeming with thousands of birds. Including approximately 5,000 pairs of puffins, 1,000 pairs of razorback auks and 500 pairs of common murres. The island is located in the lower Bay of Fundy about a mile west of Grand Manan Island, a remote island known for its iconic lighthouse.

Other puffin-preferred places on the Maine coast include eastern Egg Rock in the MidCoast & Islands region , and Seal Island and Matinicus Rock at the mouth of Penobscot Bay. As any puffin can tell you, it’s worth the trip.

When to See Puffins

June and July are the best months to see puffins, but the general season is May through August. Is there a best time of day? There are actually two. In the early part, puffins are all about taking care of business, flying sorties from the island to the water and back to feed their young. Later in the day it’s time to kick back with some me time on the rocks or rafting together on the water. Who needs a pontoon boat when you’re naturally buoyant?

Birdwatching

whale watching tours old orchard beach maine

And if you're into loons, the Maine Audubon Society volunteers regularily count more than 3,000 loons on 300 lakes and ponds — the largest population of common loons in the US after Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Bird Watching & Birding Festivals

Wildlife Parks & Refuges

Wildlife watching in Maine presents a world of diversity and endless opportunities for discovery and recreation. While wildlife watching is something visitors can enjoy throughout the state, here are two of Maine’s most beloved wildlife – and human life - destinations.

Maine Wildlife Park

Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1966 to protect sensitive salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge was named for the world-renowned marine biologist, author and environmentalist. Carson was author of “Silent Spring” and a Maine Summer resident. The refuge is located along 50 miles of Maine’s picturesque coastline in York and Cumberland counties.

We didn't see anything but birds, but a day on the water is always good. And hey, for only $60 per person for a 4 hr boat ride, it isn't bad at all. A couple of times they announced seals and whale fins, but we didn't see them. It became a joke with everyone around us that they were making it up. I'm sure they weren't. Just humorous that none of us could see anything. Snacks and beverages on board. Same with a bathroom. Staff professional and friendly. Do better than I did and wear sunscreen

After an unnecessarily unpleasant interaction with the older gentleman with glasses behind Odyssey Whale Watch's walk up window, I'm so glad I *didn't* follow through with booking a tour with this company. My fiancé and I came to Portland for a week long getaway. As it was our first time, we wanted to hit the more touristy attractions so a boat tour was a must. We considered the 4hr whale watching tour offered through Odyssey but I was nervous about getting sea sick, so we opted for a shorter sunset lighthouse cruise through Portland Discovery Tours to test the waters (literally and figuratively) - the intention being, if I was able to tolerate the shorter cruise with PDT, we would then book the 4hr whale watching cruise through Odyssey for another day during our trip. On the day of our sunset tour with PDT, we arrived while it was raining so we sought refuge under the building's awning along with several other patrons. We chose an open spot behind a line of others waiting for the same tour. Little to my knowledge, Odyssey Whale Watch and Portland Discovery Tours share a building with walk up windows situated next to one another. I only learned this because after about 5 minutes of standing in line, an older gentleman with glasses behind the walk up window said "ma'am could you not stand in front of my window" and before I could fully turn around to look he followed up with "I'm trying to run a business." It was only then that I looked up and noticed this window did not belong to PDT. I moved of course, but was taken aback by how rude this gentleman was. And to be clear - having to move was not my issue, but there is a professional way to communicate that. For a company that relies on the tourist economy, being rude to tourists seems bad for business? The real kicker is that about 10 minutes later I look over and see the same gentleman closing up his window, walking out and locking up to leave. I did not see a single potential customer come up to the window after I moved which tells me that a tourist looking for refuge from the rain, lined up behind others doing the same thing didn't prevent this gentleman from "trying to run a business", but I imagine an honest review recounting an unnecessarily negative experience with a potential patron might. Once again, I'm so glad I did not book a tour with Odyssey. However, I do highly recommend booking a tour with PDT as they were professional, hospitable and courteous - qualities Odyssey Whale Watch seems to be lacking. A tip to the older gentleman with glasses at Odyssey "trying to run a business" - hospitality goes a long way.

Right after we pull out of the harbor, the CAPT announces they don't use any sophisticated tools/gadgets/devices to find the whales. They rely on the eyes of the guests aboard to spot the whales. I would expect a business like this to use the money they make to buy said tools/gadgets so that way my family and other families don't spend over $300, all for 3+ hours of looking at water with zero hope (other than our untrained eyes) to spot whales. I'm super disappointed that this is their approach. I don't mind getting skunked by Mother Nature but the fact that there is zero effort put forth by the business to ensure client satisfaction is very disheartening.

Photo of Robert C.

Unfortunately didn't see a whale... The boat cruise was nice and they have a bar on the boat. We were given a pass to come back, but no future trips. Ack to Maine anytime soon. Check with them before booking to find out if it's a good time of year to catch a whale!

Great experience. Had many whale sightings and very knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Never have I visited maine so when I saw this I figured what a cool way to experience the atmosphere and possibly get a chance to see some whales and dolphins. I must say, you def should be dressed for the temperature as it does go down 10-20° on the ocean. Personally I think the cost was pretty high for a person (65$) and especially if you do not get to see any whales it's kind of a busy. But you do get to see the lighthouses and a little history on the area which was cool. Pro tip: look for coupons prior to booking.

Photo of Marisol C.

It was nice. Didn't see any whales. We did see a lot of birds and butterflies. I fell asleep for about an hour. The weather was perfect. I'll come back and try it again before I get any older. you should give it a try. You might be luckier than us.

This place is a scam. When I spoke to the people at the booth they told me that we would definitely see whales since they had seen whales the whole week. We were pretty shocked by their confidence but it made us think it would be fairly certain we would see whales. The morning of the tour it was very foggy, I went to the booth again to ask if we would still see whales despite the fog. She seemed less confident this time but still assured me that we would see whales. The boat ride was foggy and extremely choppy. I didn't see any whales since we didn't stop for long enough when the tour guide apparently spotted one for us to actually see anything. When we went to the booth to request for a partial refund we were spoken to so rudely. The lady lied and said she never assured us that we would see whales. I went to Maine for my birthday to see whales and I left so disappointed and hurt by how I was treated by the people that worked there. Really can't recommend.

We were lucky to see a minke coming up to the surface a couple times, but even if we didn't, I would've scored a 5 based on the experience. Not too crowded, reasonable price of snacks, and the BEST announcer/specialist ever. She kept us engaged and her timing was great-we didn't go too long without info & there always seemed to be another tidbit of info.

Photo of Kelly C.

I went on a whale watch with a friend back in August 2020. We didn't have high expectations but bundled up and climbed aboard. The guides told us about some of the creatures we *may* happen upon but shared the disclaimer that many times you don't get to see anything fun or exciting. No biggie, since we were just excited for a few hours on the water. We were surprised to see harbor porpoises many times - both still in the harbor and when we got close to one of the lighthouses. We also came across a number of Minke whales, which look like dolphins on top but whales under the surface. Some came VERY close to the boat, which was super cool. Of course we had wanted the National Geographic moment and didn't get that, but we did get to see some of the more rare sightings. I would absolutely go on another whale watch with this group.
