It's a drill every UAE resident goes through every two years, or maybe three, depending on the type of visa. While most of us remember the month when our residence visa is scheduled to expire, we don't usually remember the date. Then, as the month approaches, it's common to flip through the pages of the passport to check the visa validity.

But we don't always carry our passport with us, do we? So what should we do then? All you need to check your residence visa validity is your passport number and the passport expiry date. So you're good even if you have a photocopy of your passport, or a scanned version saved on your phone.

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship provides this service through its website. A resident can enter passport information to verify if visa is still valid and can check whether the issued visa is authentic or not. Residents can also cross-check the validity of visa through this official government website.

Here's a step by step guide to track the visa validity using your passport:

  • Step 1: Visit this link - https://smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity
  • Step 2: Select the 'Passport Information' radio button.
  • Step 3: Select either 'residency' or 'visa'.
  • Step 4: Enter passport number and passport expiry date.
  • Step 5: Enter nationality from the dropdown on the right. A corresponding number will appear on the box on the left.
  • Step 6: Select the captcha check box and click on search. The page will now display your visa details along with date of expiry.

Dubai: If you have recently applied for your family's visa, a visit visa or an employment visa in the UAE, you may be interested in tracking the visa application status. If so, here is all you need to know.

There are various online and offline facilities by the UAE government, which you can use to track your visa application status.

What do you need?

To track your visa application, you would need the following details:

- Reference number

- Application number

Once you have applied for your visa, you will receive a copy of your application form.

"The reference number can be found on the visa application that you have submitted. Once you apply for a residence visa or an e-visa, the reference number can be found on the application form," Shafiq Muhammad, Public Relations Officer with Muhaisnah Documents Clearing Services in Dubai

If you only have your passport number for the enquiry, you can only check the UAE visa status and validity after it has been issued, not while it is under process. The details are provided below.

The reference number can be found on the visa application that you have submitted. Once you apply for a residence visa or an e-visa, the reference number can be found on the application form. - Shafiq Muhammad, Public Relations Officer with Muhaisnah Documents Clearing Services in Dubai

Track visa application

As per the UAE Government’s official website – u.ae – if you have applied for a visa to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, you can track your visa application on the website of Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICA) through the following website: https://smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/applicationTracking

Here you would need to enter the ‘Request number’ or the Application number.

Once you enter the Application number, the system will give you an update on the visa application status.

If you applied for a Dubai visa or through Amer centres in Dubai, you can track your visa application through the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai here: https://smart.gdrfad.gov.ae/Public_Th/StatusInquiry_New.aspx

Once you visit the link, you would need to enter Application number, transaction number as well as the payment date, all of which can be found on your application form.

Other channels for tracking Dubai visas

You can also contact Amer Centre on 800 5111.

How can I track my visa only through the passport number?

If you only wish to track your visa’s status through your passport number, you can use the ICA service here: https://beta.smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity

This allows visa holders to check the status and validity of their visas. However, this service can only be used if your visa has been issued, not if it is still under process, according to Muhammad.

“We can only check the details of the visa status and validity through this process once the visa has been issued – whether residence or visit visa. Once you visit the link, it gives you two options for checking the visa satus of ‘e-visa’ or ‘residency’, which is for residence visas or visit visas. The residence visa can only be checked after the visa has been stamped on your passport. If you have an entry permit or visit visa issued, you can select the e-visa option,” Muhammad said.

Step 1: Visit https://beta.smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity

Step 2: Select ‘Search by Passport information’.

Step 3: If you are enquiring about your residence visa, select ‘Residency’. If you have a visit visa or an e-visa/entry permit, select ‘Visa’.

Step 4: Enter your passport number, passport expiry date and nationality.

Step 5: Check the Captcha box for verifying your identity and click ‘Search’.

The system will then provide you details like the visa file number, Unified ID number, visa status, date of issue and expiry.

They have many projects and initiatives to make inquiries simpler and faster for residents and expats. Adapting to a ‘smarter city’ concept by applying technology in our everyday lives to make government procedures much more convenient.

Dealing with visa expiry, renewals, and overstays

It's important to keep track of your visa status so that you can renew it or leave the UAE before it expires. Staying beyond its expiry is considered as overstaying, leading to complications.

What can happen if you overstay your visa?

Fines: In the UAE, if you overstay your visa, you'll be charged AED 50 for each day. Continuous violations can lead to even higher charges.

Deportation: If your visa is over 60 days overdue, the authorities could deport you. This would mean you'd have to leave the UAE, and you might not be allowed back in for a while.

Travel ban: Being deported for visa issues can land you on a travel blacklist. This could keep you from returning to the UAE, even if you have a valid visa later on.

Criminal charges: Overstaying isn't just a simple matter; it can be considered breaking the law. If found guilty, you might face time in jail, additional fines, or both.

What to do after your UAE visa expires

If your visa expires while you're in the UAE, it's essential to act quickly.

The first step should be to try to extend or renew your visa. This is the most direct way to legally extend your stay. You can apply for an extension or renewal through the ICP website.

But, if extending or renewing isn't an option, you might have to exit the UAE and then apply for a new visa. In this case, you should contact the embassy or consulate of your home country for assistance.

Renewing your UAE Visa

Renewing a visa in the UAE isn't a one-size-fits-all procedure. The process to follow depends on your visa type and the reason you're extending it. Generally, you'd need to fill out an application, attach the required documents, pay any fees, and then wait for a decision on your application.

For most visit and tourist visas, a 30-day renewal is possible once the immigration authorities have given their approval . And before this renewal period runs out, there's an option for a second renewal. However, those on a 90-day visit visa should note that they can only get a single 30-day extension .

According to the ICP, resident visas that last more than six months can't be renewed at the moment. But after the visa expires or is canceled, expats get a 6-month period to either get a new residence visa or leave the UAE. Plus, there are no fines during these 6 months .
