“Africa changes you forever, like nowhere on earth. Once you have been there, you will never be the same. But how do you begin to describe its magic to someone who has never felt it. How can you explain the fascination of this vast, dusty continent, whose oldest roads are elephant paths. Could it be because Africa is the place of all our beginnings, the cradle of mankind, where our species first stood upright on the savannahs of long ago?” -Brian Jackman-

A fabulous ride at Bali Elephant Camp

Went to Elephant camp and it was raining. Had a Mahout named Long, he handed me an umbrella and he had a lovely cheeky, joking nature. I had a fabulous ride. The elephant I rode was named Cindy and she was 23 years old and we went for a small swim and walked along a lovely scenic route. Got some great photos. Had a lovely welcome drink and a Bali pancake, which was delicious. Did not wish for it to end. It was fabulous. Will go again. (Ride location at Bali Elephant Camp)

Interaction with the elephants was fantastic

The Elephant Safari Lodge was the highlight of our trip to Bali! I stayed two nights with my two boys, ages 10 and 14. Lodging, food and service was immaculate and the amount of interaction with the elephants was fantastic! The story of how the elephants were rescued from logging operations is beautiful (although I didn't feel good about the talent show - do we really need the elephants to perform tricks for us?). This is your chance to see Sumatran elephants, as they may be extinct in 10 years. (Location ride at Mason Elephant Park Taro)

What documents do I need to travel to Tanzania?

A visa is required when traveling to Tanzania. Currently, this can be obtained online,  on arrival at airports and border crossings, and is valid for 90 days. A valid passport is mandatory. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Tanzania.

Do lodges and camps have mosquito nets?

We carefully select the accommodation on safari so that you are comfortable and relaxed and can experience a one-of-a-kind atmosphere during your safari. All rooms/tents during your safari are fitted with mosquito nets or are insect-proofed to protect you against bites. You are also advised to use insect repellent to further protect yourself, especially outdoors in the evenings.

Is Tanzania safe to travel to?

Tanzania is generally considered a safe destination for safari-goers. Visitors should follow the safety guidelines provided and take necessary precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night or leaving valuables unattended.

When does the wildebeest migration take place?

The wildebeest migration takes place in Tanzania typically between the months of November to August, although the timing can vary slightly depending on the weather patterns each year. The migration is a continuous movement of around 1.5 million wildebeest and large numbers of zebras and gazelles across the Serengeti plains in Tanzania in search of fresh grazing land and water. In November and December, the herds of wildebeest can be found in the northern Serengeti near the Kenyan border, where they start calving. As the rains stop and the dry season sets in, the herds begin to move south in search of water and fresh grazing. By April and May, the herds are usually in the central Serengeti. By June, the wildebeest and other herbivores gather at the Grumeti River, where they must cross to continue their journey south. By July, the herds are usually in the eastern Serengeti; by August, they move into the northern region of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Is it safe to drink water in Tanzania?

Drinking tap water in Tanzania is generally unsafe, as it may contain harmful bacteria and parasites that can cause illnesses such as typhoid, cholera, and hepatitis A. Drinking only bottled or filtered water is important to avoid getting sick. You can buy bottled water at most shops, hotels, and restaurants in Tanzania. When traveling in Tanzania, it’s also important to avoid drinking water from sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams, which may also contain harmful bacteria and parasites. Instead, use bottled or filtered water to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth after brushing. Additionally, avoiding ice in drinks and peeling fruits and vegetables before eating them is a good idea to reduce the risk of ingesting contaminated water.

What are the best national parks to visit in Tanzania for a safari?

Tanzania is home to many national parks, but the most popular ones for safaris are Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on a Tanzania safari?

Tanzania is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, buffalo, leopards, cheetahs, and many species of birds.

What is the best time of year to go on a Tanzania safari?

The best time to go on a Tanzania safari depends on your preferences. The dry season from June to October is the best time for game viewing, but it can be crowded and more expensive. The wet season from November to May offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices, but some parks may be closed due to flooding.

What kind of transportation will be used during my safari?

Our safaris are in 4×4 vehicles, which are ideal for navigating the rugged terrain of the national parks. Some safaris may also include flights to remote areas or walking safaris.

What should I wear on my safari?

It’s important to dress in layers and pack versatile, easy-to-wash, and dry clothing. Don’t forget also to bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a small backpack to carry your essentials while on safari. Choose comfortable, practical, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. Lightweight, breathable clothing such as cotton or linen shirts, pants, and shorts. Long-sleeved shirts and pants can also help protect you from the sun, insects, and thorny bushes. Neutral-colored clothing such as khaki, beige, or olive green. Avoid bright colors or patterns, as they can scare off wildlife or attract insects. Closed-toe shoes such as sneakers or hiking boots for walking safaris or nature walks. Sandals or flip-flops can be worn around camp but may not provide enough protection for outdoor activities. A hat or cap to protect your head and face from the sun. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the bright sunlight. A light jacket or sweater for cooler mornings and evenings. Swimwear if you plan to visit a lodge or camp with a swimming pool. A rain jacket or poncho if you’re traveling during the rainy season.

What is the tipping etiquette for safari guides and mountain crews on trips like this?

Tipping is highly appreciated at the end of safari/mountain climb. The size of tips will vary depending on the length and complexity of the trip, the number of staff on the trip and the number of clients on the trip. Generally, groups like to meet together before the end of the trek to discuss how much they would like to tip each staff member based on their individual trek experience. You should prepare an envelope after your trek for your tip money at the Hotel. You can use US dollars, Euros, TZ Shillings or a combination of these. Please ask the Safari/Climbing coordinator at the Hotel for advice.

RECOMMENDED TIP :

Mountain Climbs : $25-50 USD per Day per Climber to be shared between guides, chefs and porters.

Safaris: Driver/Guide : $35-50 USD per Day per Car. If it is a camping safari there will be a tip for the cook $10 USD per Day.

THESE ARE JUST GUIDELINES AND TIPS CAN BE GIVEN TO SAFARI STAFF/MOUNTAIN CREW ACCORDING TO SERVICES PROVIDED.

PARK INFORMATION

Since opening in 1997 the Mason Elephant Park has garnered a reputation around the world as the blueprint on how elephants should be cared for in captivity. Set in the misty hinterlands of Taro, this multi-award winning park is Bali’s only dedicated elephant rescue facility and is home to 31 endangered Sumatran elephants, 4 of which were born here. The park provides guests with the opportunity to interact and learn about these gentle giants while giving the elephants a comfortable and safe environment.

The Park is set in 3.5 hectares and has been carefully landscaped to mimic as much as possible the original environment of the elephants’ previous home in Sumatra. The location in central Bali was also chosen for its cooler climate and more tropical location. For those reasons the elephants are kept cool and comfortable in this lush tranquil landscape.

Our park follows the ‘5 Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ established in Great Britain in 1965. Freedom from hunger or thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease, freedom to express most normal behavior, and freedom from fear and distress. All elephants are under 24/7 veterinary care and are provided with the correct diet and vitamins daily.

We do not use brutal or cruel training methods, as all training is by repetition, reward and patience. Elephant rides are on specially-designed light teak wood seats that are heavily padded to cause no discomfort or injury to the elephant’s back. Riding an elephant actually helps by providing necessary exercise for its muscles, bone density, foot health and general wellbeing. In addition to our own regulations we actively support other like-minded global charities.

In our 20 years of operation, the Mason Elephant Park had been recognised by the international community and numerous animal welfare organisations such as the National Geographic Society as a Welfare Supporter and the World Wildlife Foundation as a Partner in Conservation.

Top destinations for African elephant safaris

Do you dream of spotting majestic elephants roaming the wild plains of Africa? These highly-intelligent gentle giants can be observed on safaris across the continent, from tuskers in Zimbabwe to rare desert-adapted elephants in Namibia and Botswana’s population of towering Kalahari elephants. Here are the top destinations to visit in Africa for elephant safaris.

Botswana: Chobe National Park

Elephant on a water safari in Botswana

Nearly a third of Africa’s elephants live in Botswana , with the world’s highest concentration, an estimated 120,000, based in Chobe National Park . This watery wonderland is known as the world’s elephant capital, where you can observe herds of colossal Kalahari elephants during 4×4 drives along the floodplains and on solar-powered boat trips on the Chobe River. For incredible sightings, stay at Chobe Game Lodge , the only camp inside the park, or Savute Elephant Lodge on the quiet banks of the Savute Channel.

Kenya: Amboseli, Samburu and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

elephant safari tours

Amboseli National Park is famed for the thousand-strong herds of tusked elephants that ramble its wide-open scrubby savannahs. There’s nowhere else in Kenya where you’re guaranteed to see wild elephants in such huge numbers, parading against a backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, snow-capped Kilimanjaro. The dry landscape – Amboseli means Salty Dust in Maasai – draws elephants to wetland areas for supreme viewings.

Further north in Kenya’s arid Samburu region, you can stay at the aptly-named Elephant Bedroom Camp . Set in Samburu National Game Reserve, this unfenced tented camp allows elephants to wander in and out freely, drawn to the river. The elephants, including seven bulls that visit frequently, feel so safe that they sleep here, hence the camp’s name. Often, you’ll be greeted with elephant sightings when you unzip your tent in the morning.

Tour the renowned Sheldrick Wildlife Trust on the edge of Nairobi National Park to meet cute baby elephants, many orphaned by poachers. Set up over 40 years ago by conservationist Daphne Sheldrick, the trust runs the most successful rescue and rehabilitation scheme for elephants in the world. Take a tour to learn about their work and meet baby elephants enjoying their daily milk and mud bath.

Namibia: Damaraland

Desert adapted elephants in Damaraland, Namibia

Namibia’s untamed Damaraland is loved for its rugged peaks, petroglyphs and dry riverbeds where rare desert elephants roam. Classed as endangered, there are only around 150 of these elephants left in the wild and most live around ephemeral rivers, including the Huab, Hoarusib and Uniab. Take an elephant safari from Mowani Mountain Camp , where Rosie, one of Namibia’s first female guides, has an excellent track record of locating the elephants. She’ll point out unique adaptations that allow these animals to survive in the desert, including larger feet so they don’t sink into the sand.

Zimbabwe: Hwange and Mana Pools National Parks

African elephants in Hwange NP, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s most famous National Park, Hwange , is home to around 40,000 tusker elephants. Witness herds on walking safaris and game drives from camps like Somalisa , or ride the Elephant Express , an open-sided railcar that ambles along a railway line built by the British in 1904. From Bomani Tented Camp , you can even take part in elephant conservation , delivering supplies to man-made waterholes that help elephants survive during the dry season, from May to November.

Head to the far north of Zimbabwe to Mana Pools , a lush national park dotted with flood plains and bisected by the mighty Zambezi River. These vital water sources are a magnet for wildlife, including elephants. The safari guides at Nyamatusi Camp know many of the park’s elephants by sight and can take you on 4×4 drives and walking safaris to the animals’ favourite haunts. You might even spot elephants on their hind legs munching from trees – it’s thought that one of the resident bulls, Boswell, learnt this trick and passed it on to others in the park.

Tanzania: Tarangire National Park

Elephant in Tarangire national park

Tarangire National Park in north-east Tanzania is home to over 4,000 elephants. They roam the baobab-dotted plains and forests in herds as large as 600. During dry season between July and October, thousands more migrate here, along with grazing game, drawn to the life-giving waters of the Tarangire River. This is the best place to park up on safari to watch elephants drink and bathe, you can also watch them from a luxury treehouse at Tarangire Treetops or from your private deck-side bathtub at Mpingo River Lodge , which sits on an escarpment overlooking the river.

  • Where to See Elephants in Africa: the 10 Best Safari Destinations to Visit

Where to See Elephants in Africa: the 10 Best Safari Destinations to Visit

African elephants, the largest land mammal, are intelligent creatures with studies suggesting that elephants are as smart as chimpanzees and dolphins. The African bush (or savanna) elephant, is the largest of the three species of elephants (the two others being the African forest elephant and the Asian forest elephant), spread throughout the African continent and found in many African countries.

In some regions, the elephants have adapted to harsh climates, such as the Sahara and Namib deserts, but due to the lack of water, it is not so easy to see these elephants in the desert regions. It is more common to see them in landscapes of  open plains and lush vegetation. To help you decide where to head to spot elephants, we have curated a list of Africa’s premium safari destinations with the largest populations of elephants in Africa.

1. Chobe National Park, Botswana

2. hwange national park, zimbabwe, 3. okavango delta, botswana, 4. selous game reserve, tanzania, 5. kruger national park, south africa, 6. mana pools national park, zimbabwe, 7. tsavo conservation area, kenya, 8. serengeti national park, tanzania, 9. amboseli national park, kenya, 10. masai mara national reserve, kenya, other african safari destination where you can see elephants:.

Number of Elephants: Over 120,000

Best months to visit: May to October

Botswana has the greatest population of elephants in Africa, with Chobe National Park in the north of the country home to the largest population of elephants in the whole of Africa. The  diverse habitats of Chobe, including mopane woodlands, acacia woodlands, baobab trees, and flood grasslands, offer a rich feeding ground for its huge elephant population.

In the dry season, elephants gather around the Chobe and Linyanti Rivers, so a boat cruise along the river or game drive along the bank  is perfect for watching elephants.

Chobe National Park is home to all of Africa’s big five animals , including the elusive leopard and the endangered rhinoceros, as well as being a renowned birding destination.

Recommended Safari: 7 Day Chief’s Island & Chobe National Park Family Safari

A premier African safari destination, Botswana offers amazing safaris from top rated safari experts.

Number of Elephants: Around 20,000-50,000 individuals

Best months to visit: July to October

Hwange National Park has the largest elephant population in Zimbabwe. In fact Hwange’s wildlife authorities are struggling to handle the elephant overpopulation with the adverse effects it has on the ecology. However, from a safari perspective, Hwange offers excellent chances of spotting large herds of elephants throughout the park.

In addition, the Hwange ecosystem is home to around 500-700 lions as well as the remaining big five animals and many more wildlife species together with diverse bird life.

Recommended Safari: Zimbabwe Highlights Safari

Number of Elephants: Over 18,000

Although Okvango’s elephant numbers may not be as staggering as that of Chobe National Park, it has a decent elephant population. The Okavango Delta’s unique ecosystem is known for its seasonal flooding that replenishes the region’s water sources while the Delta itself provides a perennial water sources attracting elephants and much other wildlife throughout the year.

The Okavango Delta also offers excellent bird-watching opportunities, stunning aerial views, diverse wildlife, and a chance to experience the spectacular landscape by traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), by boat and on foot.

Recommended Safari: Zambia, Zimbabwe & Botswana Safari

Number of Elephants: Approximately 15,000

Best months to visit: June to October

Selous Game Reserve has Tanzania’s largest concentration of elephants. One of the less-visited safari destinations, Selous Game Reserve offers elephant habitat with miombo woodland, savanna, wetlands and the Rufiji River The elephant herds have a favourite food, the red fruit of the doum palm, which is found in Selous Game Reserve.

Selous is also one of the few wildlife reserves where you can see the puku antelope, sable antelope and African wild dog. Game activities include walking safaris, game drives, boat trips and, for the more adventurous, fly camping.

Recommended Safari: 3 Days Safari to Selous Game Reserve

Number of Elephants: Over 13,000

Best months to visit: May to September

Kruger National Park , one of Africa’s biggest wildlife reserves at nearly 2 million hectares, has one of the largest elephant populations in South Africa. Kruger’s current elephant population is a credit to the rigorous conservation methods of the park authorities and other non-profit organisations. Due to their large numbers, it is fairly easy to spot these huge mammals throughout the park.

South Africa’s oldest national park, Kruger is home to the big five as well as hundreds of other wildlife species and over 500 bird species.

Recommended Safari: Vic Falls, Kruger & Cape Town .

Number of Elephants: Over 12,000

After Hwange National Park, Mana Pools National Park is the best destination to see elephants in Zimbabwe. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Mana Pools boasts spectacular scenery along the Zambezi River and surrounding floodplains, teeming with wildlife and elephants.

The river channels and small lakes of Mana Pools are an ideal habitat for a healthy population of hippos and Nile crocodiles. The park is one of the best places to go on a boat or canoe safari, watching the wildlife as they drink at the river.

Number of Elephants: Approximately 12,000

The Tsavo Conservation Area, comprising Tsavo East National Park, Tsavo West National Park, Chyulu National Park and Mkomazi National Park in Tanzania as well as other wildlife reserves, ranches and settlements, is home to the biggest population of elephants in Kenya. Over the years there has been a steady growth in the elephant population due to a dramatic reduction in poaching.

This vast area has remarkable biodiversity and diverse landscapes including acacia scrub, savanna grassland, woodland and riverine forest. It’s home to many species of wildlife including the critically endangered hirola.

Recommended Safari: 4-Day Tsavo East & West Safari

Number of Elephants: Over 7,000

Best months to visit: July to September

Tanzania’s most popular park, Serengeti National Park is well known for its wildebeest migration , it has many other attractions, including a good concentration of elephants, iconic big five, more than 500 bird species, herds of wildebeest and zebra.

In the Serengeti, elephants are an impressive sight, roaming the plains, wandering into the woodlands and drinking from waterholes.

Recommended Safari: 5 Days Safari in Tanzania (Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater)

Number of Elephants: Over 3000

Best months to visit: January, February, June to October Known for its large elephant herds, sometimes up to 100 elephants, Amboseli National Park also boasts the spectacular backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Amboseli holds the record for the longest elephant tusks and largest elephants.

Amboseli is also a great birding destination with some rare and endangered bird species, such as the Egyptian vulture, and is home to four of the big five (no rhinos).

Recommended Safari: 3-Day Amboseli National Park Camping Safari

Number of Elephants: Approximately 2500

Last, but by no means least, on the list of the best elephant safari destinations is Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve . The Masai Mara has a large concentration of wildlife and a bounty of attractions, with elephants often seen on the plains, around the marshes and in the riverine forests. The population of elephants is steadily rising due to the hard work of the rangers, Masai community and the government.

The Masai Mara National Reserve also plays its part in the annual wildebeest migration of over two million wildebeest, zebra and other antelope as they cross the Mara River from Tanzania into Kenya.

Elephant Safari with Minneriya Safari Tours – Honest Review

Updated: July 30, 2023

written by: Steph Kloeckener

Going on an elephant safari is one of the most amazing things to do in Sri Lanka. This review of Minneriya Safari Tours will tell you what you need to know about this safari company.

Elephants are some of the most amazing animals on earth, so seeing them in their natural environment was a must for me when I finally visited Sri Lanka in 2019. And funnily enough, I reached out to Minneriya Safari Tours while watching the sunrise from the top of Pidurangala in Sri Lanka. And I cannot tell you how happy I was that they wanted to work with me.

Minneriya Safari Tours offers 3 hours long safari tours in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park. During the said tour, a driver will drive the jeep along set paths within the national parks while bringing you as close to the elephants as possible without disturbing them.

The company offers a free change of the safari location if the elephants are gathering in the other national park. I myself originally enquired about a safari in Minneriya National Park and was told right away that the vast majority of elephants were currently in Kaudulla National Park.

Disclosure: I went on this safari at a discounted press rate in exchange for social media coverage. This review was not part of the agreement. The elephant safari would have been on my itinerary anyway as I love elephants and have always dreamed of seeing them in their natural environment. As always all opinions expressed in this review are my own. See the full disclosure for further information.

Minneriya Safari Tours Review

If you want to know more about the Kaudulla National Park where I went on my safari and the elephant gathering itself, you should read the national park guide. The two national parks are where the largest gathering of wild elephants in the world happens, so be sure to include it in your Sri Lanka itinerary.

More about Kaudulla National Park: Amazing Elephant Safari in Kaudulla National Park

An Elephant Safari with Minneriya Safari Tours

The company offers a free change of the safari location if the elephants are gathering in the other national park . Therefore you do not have to worry about which safari location you book. The elephants are wild, so they tend to wander around, and trying to predict where they will be is close to impossible. I, for one, originally enquired about a safari in Minneriya National Park and was told that most of the elephants were in the other park.

Minneriya Safari Tours offers 3 h long safari tours in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park or alternatively in Hurulu Eco Park Habarana. During the tour, a driver will drive along set paths in the park. Therefore there is no mindless chasing of the wild elephants in the park and they have space to retreat. The drivers will get you as close to the elephants as possible without endangering you or the elephants.

Elephants family seen during a safari with Minneriya Safari Tours

The price for a 3h safari in Kaudulla or Minneriya National Park starts at 65 USD for one person and want the entire jeep for yourself. If you are traveling with another person, you can expect to pay between 45 and 55 USD per person, and it gets less expensive the more people you are. And while this price tag might seem steep for Sri Lanka, it is well worth it.

The half-day safari costs 95€ for a single person and 150€ for two people.

Children under the age of 5 do not have to pay, while children under 11 pay a special rate.

What is included in the Price?

When you book a safari with Minneriya Safari Tours, the price includes a private jeep for your group or yourself, a certified driver, the National Park entry fee for you, the driver’s entry fee, the jeep entry fee, the national park VAT tax, the national park service fee and free pickup from hotels in Minneriya and Habarana.

It is a courtesy to tip the driver after the safari, so be sure to have some cash on you.

Hotel Pickup and the Start of the Safari

If you opt for the 3 PM Evening Safari, you can drive to an arranged meetup location at 1:45 PM. Alternatively, you can arrange a hotel pickup. Hereby Minneriya Safari Tours offers a free hotel pickup service if you are staying in a hotel in Minneriya or Habarana. Meanwhile, the price for a pickup from more remote locations like Sigiriya start at 8 USD.

Once you are seated the driver will start the drive to the entrance gate of one of the two national parks or the eco-park.

Minneriya Safari Tours Jeep Review

The jeeps of Minneriya Safari Tours have a maximum capacity of seven, so even larger groups can be in one vehicle. And while I can only review the jeep we were in, it looked clean and well maintained. Usually, the back part in which you are seated has a removable cover. This way you can stand as you observe the elephants and many other animals in the national parks. And if it starts to rain as usual in the local monsoon season, the driver will quickly put the cover on.

We tried to help our driver do it when heavens opened, but he was a lot faster without our help as we seemingly only got in his way.

The Elephant Safari with Minneriya Safari Tours

The elephant safari itself was incredible and words cannot describe how much I loved it. We literally saw hundreds of elephants, water buffalos, and birds including a peacock. It was a downright magical experience and that is not just the elephant lover in me speaking.

The paths you drive on can be rather rough, so you might want to hold on to something as the car is moving. Food and drinks are not part of the safari package, so you have to bring your own

Elephant in Kaudulla National Park

Suggestions for an even better Experience

Sadly, we did not have a spotter during our safari. Therefore, we had to rely solely on our driver who was really polite, but sadly only spoke a very broken English. At one point we tried to tell him that we wanted to stay longer as I wanted to take photos of an adorable baby elephant that had previously been hiding behind its mother. Sadly, the driver misunderstood me and drove away.

Therefore, I suggest asking specifically for a spotter or an English-speaking driver. That way you are sure to make the most of your experience.

Is the Safari ethical?

Based on my experience with Minneriya Safari Tours, I can say that they are one of the good tour operators. At no point did the driver get too close to the elephants, so these gentle giants always had the space they need to move freely and undisturbed. And unlike other jeeps I saw, ours did not leave the paths to overtake other vehicles while following specific elephants.

I do not know if this was the case because I stressed how important ethical and sustainable traveling is to me. But if all safaris are like mine, I am more than happy with the company’s approach.

Minneriya Safari Tours Ethical Operator

Ultimately, I can only recommend that you also mention how important an ethical approach is to you. Doing so does not hurt anyone and in the worst case, it is a reminder that most travelers want to protect nature and wildlife as we explore the world.

And while you are at it, you can also mention how much you hate that tourists ride elephants and therefore damage the poor animal’s spine. Sadly, riding elephants is still quite common in Sri Lanka, so most tour companies include it in some of their programs.

Should you book a safari with Minneriya Safari Tours?

Ultimately I can only recommend booking an elephant safari with the Minneriya Safari Tours. They delivered what they promised, and we had a great time in the national park.

I do think that the fact that they also offer elephant back rides is more than problematic. However, I am fully aware that most tour operators offer elephant rides and that it has been a part of the Sri Lankan culture for a long time. Therefore change will take time and we should not punish companies in Sri Lanka because they need time to adjust.

The important thing is that none of us book this service and that we let providers know that we only want ethical animal encounters. In time we will be able to invoke change. After all, there will be no offer if there is no demand for it.

Which safari should you book?

If you want to see elephants during the safari, you should book the evening safari. Usually, there are up to five times as many elephants and in addition to that, you get to enjoy the sunset. The morning safari is best if you want to see the many birds that live within the perimeters of the national parks.

How to book the Safari?

If you want to book a safari with them, you can either book an elephant safari on their website or via WhatsApp at +94 77 648 7757 .

Thai National Parks

Kui buri national park, private tour | kui buri elephant safari | half day.

Kui Buri National Park is known to be the best place in Thailand to spot elephants and relatively good chance to spot gaurs, and that sometimes in big herds. Gaurs are the biggest cattle species and the fourth biggest land-mammal species in the world. Other possible sightings during the tours include sambar deer, banteng and wild boar.

Due to strict regulations this half-day wildlife safari tour doesn't include any hiking activities apart from leaving the vehicle for short walks to viewing areas, we will only be allowed to do safari driving. During our tour we scan the forest edges on grassland areas known to be prime elephant habitat in hope to see mainly elephants and/or gaurs.

Tour itinerary

From 2:30 pm till 5:30 to 6 pm

Wildlife tours in Kui Buri National Park are strictly regulated and limited to certain hours. After a mandatory registration we will get assigned an open-air vehicle with driver and an assistant. The tour will begin by driving slowly into the reserve on the main dirt road north heading to the main grassland areas. While driving slowly, we will search for any wildlife including birds or any other smaller/bigger animals.

Our first stop will be a viewing area where we leave the vehicle in hope to spot wildlife, mainly elephants. We will later on continue to the next viewing area at the end of the road, best known for spotting gaurs, but also elephants and sometimes bantengs.

During the tour, your guide will give you information about the habitat, wildlife and history of the park.

The type of assigned vehicle is an open-air pick-up truck driven by locals. It is the Kui Buri National Park's policy to let locals do the driving, a policy that showed to be a success in reducing the poaching in the park.

Siamo stati al parco in Agosto 2024 abbiamo visto diversi elefanti e bufali. Bellissimo!!! Bello vedere gli animali liberi. I ranger sono stati gentilissimi e disponibili. Andate a vederlo ne vale la pena !!!

By: Libby Jewitt | posted Thu 25 Jul, 2024

Our transfer was prompt and a very comfortable private air conditioned van.

Our guide was friendly and informative. She took us to the 4 viewing points and we waited patiently in the hope of spotting elephants. As we waited she showed us native animals in a book but between 2-5.30pm we didn’t see many actual Animals. Just a wild cow and a few birds. I think this is because this national park is quite new, with small trees and open area, so will need more time to establish and encourage more animals in.

Our guide provided us with water and a cheese wafer as a snack mid afternoon.

Whilst this is probably obvious - it’s good to remember to liberally cover yourself in insect repellent as there are lots of bugs and I got bitten badly on my back where I forgot to spray the repellent.

As we drove back out of the park we were in luck! We saw 4 adult and 3 baby elephants come up a track and walk over the road we were on! We were excited to see them as it made the whole trip worthwhile!

So overall it’s not the most diverse park for animals but if you’re lucky you may see an elephant in the wild.

Brilliant tour that was well organised by TNP. Great wildlife watching (how many other places are you pretty much guaranteed to see wild Asian elephants with every visit), and loved having a local private guide who was able to tell me about the history of the park, how her local community has lived alongside elephants for decades, the wildlife the community lives alongside etc, and elephant behaviour. 10/10 brilliant day

You can camp out in destinations like Uganda and South Africa with like-minded travellers while tracking mountain gorillas through mist-shrouded forests or searching for the elusive ‘big five’ across open savannahs.

our signature purple G Adventures Lando waits with doors open for overland safari travellers in Africa

Even better, you’ll see it all from our fully refurbished fleet of ‘Lando’ overland adventure vehicles — they’re purple, kitted up with fresh gear, and soon to be your new best friend. But with so many countries to choose from, where do you begin? Fear not, as we’re here to help you narrow it down with nine safari destinations waiting for you to roll up.

South Africa

There are countless reasons to see South Africa — including glugging wine in Stellenbosch’s vineyards, hanging out with pint-sized penguins on Boulders Beach, and hiking up mighty Table Mountain.

a beautiful striped zebra glows in the golden hour sun of South Africa

But arguably this destination’s biggest draw lies in its natural beauty, covering everything from the dramatic rock formations of the Cederberg Wilderness Area to Orange River — South Africa’s longest river. Let’s also not forget its world-class national parks and game reserves, where you can spot the cast of The Lion King in close proximity. Don’t miss a visit to Kruger, the country’s largest wildlife reserve and home to over 150 species of mammals and 500 species of birds.

Now if there’s anywhere on Earth that you’d describe as ‘otherworldly’, it’s most likely Namibia. Home to the world’s oldest desert, The Namib, towering sand dunes, and the largest canyon in Africa, Fish River Canyon — it’s certainly got a flair for the dramatic — and that’s without even mentioning the wildlife-rich salt pans of Etosha National Park.

Beyond the larger land animals you’d expect, Namibia is also known for sightings of lesser-known predators like bat-eared foxes and the tank-like honey badgers — an animal which even lions are known to fear. There are also less than two million people here, mostly based in the capital Windhoek, so chances are you’ll have it largely to yourself.

It’s easy to see why Botswana is considered one of the best safari destinations in Africa, as it’s home to one of the most impressive wildlife events in the world. When the Okavango Delta floods, it transforms the bone-dry Kalahari into a lush green, lagoon-filled paradise.

guides use long wooden poles to navigate travellers in rustic canoes through reedy Okavango Delta, Botswana

During the floods, animals arrive in the thousands from leviathans like elephants and hippos to flocks of pink flamingos and a deafening chorus of bullfrogs. There’s so much to see that it can be hard to know where to look. One thing you can’t miss though are the vast herds of zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo flocking together in one large mass — followed of course by lions, spotted hyenas, and fearsome Nile crocodiles.

See Botswana for yourself on: Victoria Falls to Windhoek Overland Safari

Given its much-publicized history, Zimbabwe doesn’t often top the list of the most-visited African safari destinations. It’s a real shame as there’s a ton to see and do in this friendly country. Perhaps the biggest draw is the mighty Victoria Falls — a thunderous waterfall measuring over 1,700m (5,577 ft) in length.

the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is frozen by a long exposure photo during a pink sunset

Forming a natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, it’s one of the world’s seven natural wonders and holds the title as the ‘world’s largest sheet of falling water’. There are plenty of activities — from spotting elephants, opting to hurl yourself off a bridge attached to a bungee cord, or hovering over the rising mists in a helicopter.

See Zimbabwe for yourself on: Namibia to Victoria Falls Overland Safari

Lying just over the bridge from Zimbabwe lies Zambia, popular with both adventure-seekers and nature lovers alike. Boasting some of the best national parks in Africa — South Luangwa we’re looking at you — it’s home to countless impressive natural wonders.

Aside from Victoria Falls — otherwise known as the ‘smoke that thunders’ — there’s the Grade V rapids of the Zambezi beloved by adrenaline junkies wanting to test their mettle. Then there’s the aforementioned South Luangwa — which spans over 9,000km (5,592 mi) in the far eastern reaches of the country. A visit here is a must — dramatic scenery, night drives, seasonal walking tours, and one of the best chances to spot elusive leopards.

See Zambia for yourself on: Zimbabwe to Kenya Overland Safari

Nicknamed the ‘warm heart of Africa’, it’s hard not to fall in love with Malawi. The people are some of the friendliest you’ll find, and the scenery is some of the most dramatic on the continent. The jewel in its crown is arguably Lake Malawi, billed as the ‘Lake of Stars’, that’s dotted with sandy beaches, secluded coves, and tree-covered islets.

It’s an ideal spot to relax and crack an ice-cold Castel beer in between cooling dips or scenic beach walks. If you’re looking for a bit more adventure, the freshwater diving is world famous and there are cracking spots to fish. Just keep looking up though, as you’re likely being circled by hungry fish eagles looking to try their luck!

When it comes to the best safari destinations in Africa, surely Tanzania nears the top. There are 22 different national parks covering 15% of the country, from the well-known Serengeti to the off-the-beaten-track Selous. Add in the kaleidoscopic coral reefs and white sand beaches of Zanzibar to the impressive backdrop of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, and you can see why people flock here in droves.

a close up shot of a fluffy cheetah in Tanzania looking out intently at something in the distance

While every nook and cranny is well worth a visit, we'd single out the neighbouring safari destinations of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The former is famed for the ‘Great Wildlife Migration’ — where over two million wildebeests, zebras, and antelope cross into Kenya’s Maasai Mara and back, chased by predators snapping at their hooves. UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro on the other hand is known for having one of the highest wildlife population densities on earth, where you can spot cheetahs, secretary birds, elephants, and spotted hyenas.

The penultimate safari destination we hit up on our overland Africa tours, Kenya is truly a wildlife-lover’s dream. It’s often considered as the birthplace of the safari, with world-class parks like the Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru drawing people in from all over the globe.

a large lone elephant stands in the grasslands of the Maasai Mara

The Mara is all about the drama. Think herds of wildebeest being chased by lions, cheetahs, crocodiles and more in such numbers that it’s hard to imagine. On the other hand, Lake Nakuru is all about the scenery. Set on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, it’s framed by picturesque ridges and acacia woodlands and is home to leopards, elephant herds, and excellent bird watching. There’s more to Kenya though than just safaris — think Indian Ocean beaches lapped by azure waters, tea plantations galore, and one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Africa.

See Kenya for yourself on: Nairobi to Kampala Overland Safari

Our final safari destination, Uganda goes way beyond just spotting the ‘big five’. Home to some of the world’s most endearing creatures — the majestic mountain gorilla, chimpanzees, and golden monkeys — it’s the place to get up close and personal with some of our closest relatives.

a close crop of a large mountain gorilla sitting in the bright green grass in Uganda

But if spotting these rare creatures doesn’t quite cut it, there are scenic lakes, Africa’s tallest mountain range, thunderous waterfalls, and some of the best whitewater rafting anywhere in the world. Not to mention the lively capital Kampala, with its buzzy bars and restaurants, a long and intriguing history, and vistas of the shimmering Lake Victoria.

When’s the best time to go on safari in Africa?

This is tricky to answer as some national parks — Kruger comes to mind — are bigger than New Jersey, so it really depends on your location. However, we recommend heading to Kenya and Tanzania during the ‘Great Wildlife Migration’ running from late June and early July through to late September and early October.

a fluffy lone hyena's fur glows in the South African sun as it lopes down a dirt road

Similarly, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe experience their dry season from May to October, when wildlife flocks to waterholes so it’s your best chance to see the ‘big five’ and other wildlife species.

For gorilla and chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, try going during June to August and December to February to avoid excessive rainfall. April should definitely be avoided.

What wildlife can I see in Africa?

Africa is famous for its ‘big five’ — lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino — but it doesn’t stop there. Uganda, the ‘Pearl of Africa’, plays host to half of the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas, as well as chimpanzees and colobus monkeys.

Depending on where you are, hippos, buffalo, and packs of rare African wild dogs (also known as painted wolves) can be seen. Plus, you’re more than likely to spot herds of impala, wary to avoid spotted hyena, cheetahs, and opportunistic black-backed jackals, as well as troops of baboons, giraffes, elephants, meerkats, and warthogs. The latter two will likely not be singing ‘Hakuna Matata’. Sorry to disappoint!

a large Cape buffalo with curled up tusks seems unfazed by the bird perched on its head

When it comes to birds, then the statuesque ostrich, marabou stork, or snake-eating secretary bird reign supreme. However, ‘twitchers’ may spot African sacred ibis, lilac-breasted rollers, and malachite kingfishers too.

What do I need to pack for an African safari?

While you may be tempted to channel Meryl Streep in Out of Africa — and by all means, go ahead — you don’t need to dress to the nines on safari. Bear in mind that while the sun blazes during the day, temperatures often plummet at night in the savannah — sometimes to freezing. The key here is layers, layers, layers along with sunscreen, bug spray, and long pants.

G Adventures travellers set up camp as the sky turns as purple as our overland safari vehicle

Avoid camouflage patterns as they’re banned in many African countries and skip dark colours that attract the tsetse fly whose bite is painful and potentially dangerous. Bring a cap or hat to avoid the heat of the African sun and a scarf to keep the dust out of your mouth. And don’t forget your sunnies — if only to look cool as a cucumber in your pics!

Getting there

Ready to set off in our shiny new ‘Landos’ to see these safari destinations in the flesh? Our new overland tours let rugged adventurers camp their way around Africa . It’s no longer just for the 18-to-Thirtysomethings set (we heard you loud and clear!) so we’ll see you out on the savannah soon. Rwooooarrrrr!

Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day. Elephant creates mesmerizing 'water show' for safari guests, share this article.

A bull elephant in South Africa’s MalaMala Game Reserve used its powerful trunk recently to compress and spray water as a fine mist directed toward safari guests.

“This bull tricks us with a water show!” Ranger Gabriel Harmer exclaimed via Instagram . “It was absolutely amazing! A light mist spray on a warm afternoon drive. What better way to cool down than to get water sprayed on you by an Ellie!”

Harmer’s footage is posted below and best viewed with audio.

MalaMala Game Reserve also shared the footage under the title, “Mistifier.”

“Just shows you how strong their trunks are,” one viewer observed.

“He’s got skills,” another viewer chimed in.

MalaMala is a private reserve inside Sabi Sands Game Reserve and shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park.
