Best Day Trips From Miami

The 13 Best Day Trips From Miami

island trip from miami

FilippoBacci/Getty Images

Miami is by far the most happening city in South Florida. From the picturesque beaches to the restaurants, bars, clubs, shopping, and architecture, you can always find something to do in this world-class locale. But, why limit yourself? When spending time down in Miami , there are plenty of other fun day trips just an hour or less distance from the city. Explore the beaches of the Florida Keys, or watch a rocket launch into space — South Florida is filled with exciting adventures.

The Florida Keys: Snorkel in Key Largo

Take a ride down to the Florida Keys and enjoy a day of water fun. The truth is, water sports can be done at pretty much any beach Florida, but the Keys are in a league of their own. From the laid-back island vibe to the world-class coral reefs, it’s definitely worth a day trip. The closest Key from Miami is Key Largo, where you can catch a scuba or snorkeling day trip out to  John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park .

Getting There:  Key Largo is about an hour and twenty-minute drive from Miami. It’s a straight drive across the Overseas Highway — truly a sight to be seen. There is also a shuttle service that leaves from the Miami International Airport throughout the day. Plan ahead and make a reservation to ensure you have a spot.

Travel Tip:  Beware of traffic heading down to the Keys. If you’re planning your day trip over a weekend or a holiday, be sure to leave early in the morning, otherwise the hour and twenty-minute trip will probably take you double that. Another important thing to remember is that there are no rest stops on the Overseas Highway until you hit the Keys, so make sure you don’t need a bathroom and you’ve packed plenty of car snacks.

Bimini: Go Diving With a Hammerheads

Ken Kiefer 2/Getty Images

Just 50 miles from Miami is the small Bahamian island of Bimini . It’s not the most popular island in the Bahamas, but this small paradise has a lot to offer. On your day trip to  Bimini  you’ll feel like an explorer uncovering unchartered territory. From snorkeling around shipwrecks off the coast, to diving with hammerheads, to hiking through the island’s  visitors’ trail , you’re bound to discover something new to you. Of course, you can’t leave Bimini without eating like a local — don't miss the conch ceviche, a signature snack on the island, or the lobster pizza at Edith’s.

Getting There:  The best way to get to Bimini is by boat. It’s about a two-hour boat ride. Day trips usually depart around 9 a.m. and leave Bimini about 8 p.m. that night. A round trip ticket is about $120 and usually you can get day passes to The Hilton Resort on the beach as well.

Travel Tip:  Bimini is actually a series of three small islands — North Bimini, South Bimini, and East Bimini. The largest is North Bimini, which is also home to Alice Town and the main drag (the King's Highway) filled with bars, restaurants, and shops. Be sure to head there on your day trip.

Everglades National Park: Bike Through Shark Valley

Tim Kiusalaas/Getty Images

Bike riding is a common Florida activity. Bike riding through an alligator infested pathway? Not as common. But, at Shark Valley, the 15-mile scenic loop around Everglades National Park , you can do exactly that. About halfway through the paved loop you’ll hit a concrete lookout tower where visitors can climb to the top and take in an amazing view of the Everglades . Bathrooms and water fountains are located inside the tower. Remember, you will see a lot of alligators along this path. Even if they seem calm stay at least 15 feet away, they’re still live gators!

Getting There:  Shark Valley is about an hour drive outside of Miami. There are two entrances: U.S. 41 Tamiami Trail in Miami or the Gulf Coast entrance on Oyster Bar Lane in Everglades City. For exact directions, visit the  Shark Valley visitor’s page .

Travel Tip:  The bike loop path at Shark Valley takes about 2-3 hours, so make sure you’re prepared ahead of time with snacks and water. For those who may not be up for the extended bike ride, there is a guided tram that leaves from the visitor’s center.

Space Coast: Watch a Rocket Launch

Pgiam/ Getty

Head up to the Space Coast for a day of sun, surf, and space! Besides Cocoa Beach, a haven for surfers, head to the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville. This is the location of rocket launches into space, which is definitely a sight to be seen. Check the  Kennedy Space Center  site to find out when the next launch will be so you can plan your visit accordingly. But, even if you don’t visit on a day that a rocket is being launched, touring the space center is fun for all ages. Explore mission control, go inside a real space capsule, and learn about famous NASA pioneers.

Getting There:  Cape Canaveral is about a 3-hour drive from Miami. But, even if you don’t have a car, it’s still doable in a day. There are tours that offer round trip rides starting at about $150 per person. Reservations are required.

Travel Tip:  If you’re goal is to watch a rocket launch, make sure you check that viewing is available. Due to certain launch times and schedule constraints, NASA does not always allow visitors to watch in the seating areas.

Palm Beach: Kayak to Peanut Island

John Foran / EyeEm/ Getty

Although Palm Beach is filled with classy shopping, award-winning restaurants, and million-dollar homes, there is more to do there than just gawk at the lifestyles of the rich and famous. For a fun day activity, rent kayaks at the Riviera Beach marina and head out to Peanut Island. It’s about a 20-minute kayak ride. Once you’ve reached the island there’s snorkeling, nature trails, and a relaxing beach. Bring all the supplies and food you’ll need because there’s not much on the island other than bathrooms. While there make sure to visit the once top-secret Kennedy Bunker. It’s a true historical relic.

Getting There:  Just head north up I-95 for about an hour and you’re there. A  Greyhound  bus is available as well as the  Tri-Rail .

Travel Tip:  Head back to Miami on A1A and you’ll pass all the beautiful and opulent mansions that line the water.

Fort Lauderdale: Hang Out on Las Olas Boulevard

Mark Lewis/ Getty

Fort Lauderdale may have once been a spring break mecca of non-stop drinking and partying. But, in recent years, the city has really cleaned up its act. Today, The Strip, better known as Las Olas Boulevard, is no longer home to seedy vendors and questionable people, instead it’s transformed into beach-y walking area with boutique shops, specialty ice cream stores, and tasty restaurants. At night, the area glows with lights, live music, and a young crowd.

Getting There:  Miami to Fort Lauderdale is about 40-minutes. The  Tri-Rail is also available. It leaves from the Miami Airport Station and makes three stops in Fort Lauderdale.

Travel Tip:  During high season, which is usually from Thanksgiving through New Years, the downtown area of Las Olas can get a bit busy with tourists and visitors. Plan accordingly and if you can avoid having a car, you’re better off. Parking can be tough.

Naples: Relax and Unwind

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

When the hustle and bustle of Miami get too much, head west to the relaxing Gulf Coast. Naplesis a low-key city with beautiful homes, a picturesque pier, and lots of white sandy beaches. Enjoy your day in Naples by renting bikes and heading to the pier or playing a round of golf. You’ll find an array of people fishing off the sides, tanning on the sand, or swimming in the warm Gulf water. The downtown area is quaint with cute shops and lots of outdoor eateries. Things close pretty early here, so you’ll know when it’s time to start heading back east.

Getting There:  Head west across I-75 to hit Naples. It’s about a 2-hour drive.  Greyhound  buses are available for about $30 one way.

Travel Tip:  Although Naples is small, it’s a rather affluent area, so if you plan on sticking around till dinner time, make sure you have a nicer outfit packed to change into for the restaurant — unless of course you’re only planning on getting pizza.

Homestead and Redland: Enjoy the Exotic Wine

Elizabeth W. Kearley/Getty Images

The Redland region is right at the entrance to Everglades National Park. The area is filled with exotic fruit orchards, wineries, old Florida charm — you’d never guess you were only about 45 minutes from Miami proper. While in Homestead, visit  Phil’s Berry Farm  or  Knaus Berry Farm and Bakery , they’re down the road from each other and both sell amazing baked goods like monkey bread, guava pies, and pecan rolls. Visit the Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village too if you have the time. The area is a blast into the past of dreamy old Florida, with refurbished railroad cars, tropical gardens, and antique outdoor statues. Of course, a day trip to Redland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to  Schnebly Redland’s Winery . These wines are grape-less and instead are made with more Florida-esque fruits, like mango, avocado, lychee, and passion fruit.

Getting There:  The best way to get to Homestead and the Redlands is driving. Even if it means renting a car for the day, it’s worth it. The drive is about 45-minutes and parking in the are isn’t usually an issue.

Travel Tip:  Don’t leave the Redlands without stopping at  Robert Is Here . The exotic fruit stand right outside of Everglades National Park sells all types of exotic, fresh fruit like persimmons, sapodilla, and lychees. You can also get a combo of pretty much anything in a shake.

Grand Bahama: Swim With Wild Pigs

On the off chance that you get bored of the beautiful Miami beaches, or maybe you are looking for something a little more laid back, a day trip to Grand Bahama or Freeport may be just what you’re looking for. Spend the day relaxing by the clear, blue water or swim with wild pigs in Freeport. Get your Caribbean foo fix in while there, too.

Getting There:  Speedboats and cruises  leave from Miami daily for Grand Bahama. For about $80 one way, you can spend the day in the Bahamas and be home by dinner time. If you book a tour with an all-inclusive cruise group, they will often pick you up at your hotel and bring you to the boat. The trip is about 3 hours long.

Travel Tip:  Since it can get uncomfortable being beach clothes all day, consider buying a  day pass  to one of the resorts in the area. This way you can shower in the locker rooms and change out of wet beach clothes before heading on the ferry home.

Delray Beach: Hit up Atlantic Avenue

Jaimie Tuchman / EyeEm / Getty

No matter your style, you’ll find something you love in Delray Beach. This city is the perfect combination of upscale meets laid back, and Atlantic Avenue has it all. This beachside drag is fun any time of day. Outdoor spaces and fresh food take up the sidewalks during the day, and at night the street comes alive with lit-up palm trees and live music. During the summer and holiday season there are shows at the bandstand by the water.

Getting There:  Head north from Miami for about an hour and you’ll hit Delray. There is a Greyhound bus, although it is probably easiest to rent a car or take an Uber. Parking on Atlantic can get a bit crowded during high season, but there are a couple of municipal lots with 3-hour time limit meters.

Travel Tip:  Atlantic Avenue transforms at night. Start your day by the beach and enjoy lunch at  Boston’s  or  Caffé Luna Rosa . But don’t stay by the water for dinner, head further up the street, past the train tracks, and enjoy the party-scene at  Salt  or  Rocco’s Tacos .

Biscayne National Park: Explore the Underwater World

Blend Images/PBNJ Productions/ Getty

Considered part of the northern Florida Keys, Biscayne National Park is an 173,000-acre national park located about an hour south of Miami. It’s made up of about 95% water and the rest is mangrove forests and small barrier islands. Visiting Biscayne National Park is like jumping into a water wonderland — from eco-adventure snorkeling, fishing, and kayaking through mangroves you’ll forget you’re just an hour out of the bustling city of Miami.

Getting There:  Traffic out of Miami can be heavy, so keep that in mind when planning your trip. Allow extra time when travelling on weekends, holidays or rush hour.

Travel Tip:  For a true Biscayne National Park experience, try  camping on Elliot Key or Boca Chita Key. It’s about $25 a night and includes two tents for up to six people.

Bonita Springs: A Walking Tour Through Old Florida

Bonita Springs is a small coastal town on the west coast of Florida that will ease your stress no matter when you visit. Besides the beautiful beaches, the Bonita Springs Historical Society offers six different themed history tours around the city’s old-Florida downtown. Themes include city landmarks, How Bonita got its name, River Walks, and Land of the Calusa. Plan a tour by visiting the Bonita Springs Historical Society  site .

Getting There:  Bonita Springs is about two hours from Miami. Driving is your best bet.

Travel Tip:  Pack a bathing suit and change of clothes for your day in Bonita Springs — the quaint small town offers a wide range of activities and you want to be prepared for both.

Marco Island: Beachcombing on a Barrier Island

Berkay Alemdar / EyeEm/Getty Images

Imagine spending a day on a white sand beach filled with exotic seashells while pelicans fly overhead. Well, that day is easily attainable on Marco Island . The small barrier island off the coast of Naples doesn’t offer much in the way of activities, but the beaches here are so peaceful you won’t need anything else to do. Make sure to hit up Tiger Tail Beach, it’s one of the most popular beaches in the area and offers visitors amenities like parking, a shaded playground, grills, and a picnic area. Sand Dollar Island is a must visit, too. The island is actually a small tidal lagoon that you can actually walk through because the water is so shallow. It’s a great place for bird watching, too.

Getting There:  Definitely drive here! It’s about two hours west from Miami and it’s easiest to get around the island with your own vehicle.

Travel Tip:  Expect fine dining and upscale shopping. This is definitely an affluent vacation spot, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling on a budget.

The best secluded getaways from Miami

Become one with nature, learn about Florida's history and meet all the animals on the best secluded getaways from Miami

Anna Rahmanan

Whether looking to escape the crowds, craving some alone time or simply itching for an adventure to carry forward solo, the best secluded getaways from Miami will deliver. We've got a wide-ranging list to pick through: from national parks that will delight lovers of nature to an open-air, drive-through safari that will astound you and a whole lot of water-based activities.

Sure, you can find a pocket of solitute amidst the  beach goers in the city, or venture out to a park or a hiking trail alone, but why not take some time to actually embark on a trip that will teach you a thing or two about the state's culture? There is something inherently romantic about heading out of town by yourself, after all.

An email you’ll actually love

Secluded getaways from Miami

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

1.  John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

This Key Largo destination welcomed over a million visitors back in 2004, a number that made it the most popular park in the Florida State Parks system ever—and for good reason: the coral reefs here are spectacular. You can peek at them while scuba diving, from a boat or when going snorkeling. Make sure to also catch a glimpse of the renowned "Christ of the Abyss," a 4,000-pound statue of Jesus Christ found underwater.

Everglades National Park

2.  Everglades National Park

It doesn't get much more isolated than this: 1.5 million acres of wetlands, where you'll find the largest tropical wilderness in the United States alongside hiking trails, tram tours, canoe trails and—brace for it—dark sky observation areas. Want to see the Milky Way in all of its glory? Come to the Everglades when it's dark out.

Lion County Safari

3.  Lion County Safari

A drive-through safari park? Count us in. The destination, established back in 1967, is one of the very best zoos in the country—and a single visit will make it obvious why that is. Expect 1,000 animals—alpacas! Ostriches! Buffalos!—to roam over 600 acres of land divided into seven sections.

Ten Thousand Islands

4.  Ten Thousand Islands

The chain of islands off the coast of southwest Florida will feel like a world away from Miami. Although almost all of the islands are currently uninhabited, visitors can take kayak trips or boat tours around the masses of land and gaze at dolphins swimming in the waters below.

Peace River

5.  Peace River

This is a popular destination among fossil hunters. What better way to spend some time alone than dig—quite literally—into our past and find some shark teeth? There are campgrounds to settle into and canoes to rent, plus airboat tours and real life alligators to, well, stay away from.

Crystal River

6.  Crystal River

This one's a cool one: the coastal city is known as the home of loads of Florida manatees. You absolutely must visit the animals at Three Sisters Springs and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, a protected habitat established back in 1983 over 80 acres. Spend the rest of your day at the Crystal River Archaelogical State Park, where you'll gaze at the remains of an early human settlement. No, we're not kidding.

Dry Tortugas National Park

7.  Dry Tortugas National Park

How absolutely awesome does this national park look? Across 100-square miles that are only accessible by boat or seaplane, find seven small islands, stunning coral reefs and Fort Jefferson, one of the largest 19th century forts in the United States. You've got a whole lot of sightseeing to do here.

Marco Island

8.  Marco Island

Come here for the sunset and stay for the beach, of which there are a ton. Lovers of golf will particularly like this destinaton, as will paddleboarding and kayaking fiends, who will likely take up camp at Tigertail Beach Park. Truly encapsulating the essence of relaxation and ease, the island is where most Miami folks escape to when in need of a break from the hustle of the city.

Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge

9.  Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge

The beautiful natural expanse is enough of a reason to visit this park but be sure to check out the wildlife when here as well. From seabirds to amphibians and reptiles, there are a whole lot of animals to meet at the local Visitor Center. Bonus points: sport fishing is allowed here, as long as you follow guidelines, of course.

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

10.  Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens

Learn all things Japanese at this beautiful center in Delray Beach in Palm Beach County. Be sure to check out the museum as well, but it's the Japanese Gardens that will likely take your breath away. The six gardens were established in 2001, designed by one Hoichi Kurisu as inspired by similar styles seen throughout Japanese history. Walk through them all and then, perhaps, consider planning a trip to Japan?

10 Best Day Trips from Miami, Florida

Miami cityscape with speedboat on the water heading toward the city. Maybe on one of the Miami day trips

Are you looking for some inspiration for things to do while you’re in South Florida? No doubt you’ve got a long list of things to do in Miami, but perhaps you’d like to add a bit more adventure?

Why not get out of the city for a while? There are a host of day trips from Miami, all within a few hours’ drive. You’ve got a range of options to choose from, whether you want to relax on beautiful beaches, watch a rocket launch, see dolphins and manatees, or visit one of Florida’s incredible parks.

If you’re not a fan of theme parks, Miami is one of the best wintertime destinations in Florida. It’s a great city to base yourself in if you want to explore some of Florida’s best natural and cultural sites. You’ll find a variety of picturesque beaches as well as a range of water sports like scuba diving. Plus, Florida is the only place in America where you can watch a rocket launch and see some of the best-known space travel artifacts in the world.

That said, Florida is a big state. We lived there for years and know how long it can take to drive from one place to another. For the perfect Florida vacation, stay in Miami and do some day trips around south Florida, then take a bus from Miami to Tampa or Orlando to explore the more northern destinations.

You can read our 20 Fun Day Trips from Orlando post next. 😊

🏆 Don’t have time to read the whole article? No worries! The most popular Miami day trip is the this Everglades Airboat, Wildlife Show & Bus Transfer . The most comprehensive one includes the  Miami Open-Top Bus, a Biscayne Bay Cruise, & the Everglades . Always book tours in advance — the best ones fill up quickly!

Miami day trips: How to get there

The easiest way to get anywhere in Miami is to drive. Florida has a good highway system and roads are well marked. If you need a car for the day, Discover Cars has some excellent car rental deals. You can also book a car through Turo, which is an automotive version of Airbnb.

Public transportation may be an option, depending on where you’re going. Use Rome2Rio to figure out the best route.

For ridesharing, RideGuru has a price comparison tool that gives accurate fare estimates, whether you want to use Uber, Lyft, Curb, Ola, Didi, or even a traditional taxi or limo service.

On the other hand, it is your vacation. Maybe you don’t fancy dealing with traffic and simply want to relax and have someone show you around. Lots of people book day trips for just that reason.

If that’s the case, you have plenty of tours to choose from. While some focus on one destination, others pack a variety of experiences into one full day. And some simply provide transportation along with optional add-ons.

Here’s one of my favorites. It packs a lot of Miami into one day.

10 best Miami day trips

This article includes some of the best day trips in Florida, arranged by drive time. Drive times from Miami range from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

1. Everglades National Park, for a wildlife adventure

  • Drive time: Approximately 30 minutes
  • Related tour: 3 – 4 hours Everglades Tour from Miami

Cypress trees and water in a swamp in Florida everglades

With its winding network of wetlands and forests, Everglades National Park is the largest tropical wilderness in the USA. Plenty of organized excursions are available, so you won’t need a car to visit!

With dozens of biking routes, hiking trails, and bird watching opportunities, there are lots of options for exploring this truly expansive nature area to view its endangered and threatened wildlife.

You can get a panoramic view from the top of Shark Valley’s observation tower, which is a whopping 65-feet tall. Or you might prefer to stay a bit lower to the ground by taking a boat or kayaking trip and maybe see a manatee or a dolphin.

A more unusual and intrepid way to explore on foot is called “slough slogging,” where you’ll have to be comfortable getting your feet wet to explore some of the park’s more elusive species.

If you’re nervous about the ‘gators, you also have the option of exploring the Everglades from the comfort and safety of a boat tour. Knowledgeable guides will tell you about the history of the park and its native wildlife and help you look for alligators, exotic snakes, birds, fish, and other critters.

This is the top-selling Everglades day trip from Miami:

2. Big Cypress National Preserve, for a local experience

  • Drive time: 55 minutes

boardwalk through swamp and cypress stand in Big Cypress National Preserve. One of the best Miami day trips

Covering nearly 430,000 acres of untouched Florida swampland, Big Cypress National Preserve was the first national preserve in the United States. It is considered to be one of the best places to see cypress and mangroves, alligators, and panther tracks. The number of gators and birds (and how easy it is to see them) is amazing!

Big Cypress offers scenic drives, picnic areas, viewpoints and boardwalks. There are also a number of ranger-guided activities , including discovery hikes, astronomy nights, and wildlife programs.

Big Cypress has two key advantages: First of all, admission is free. Secondly, it’s located on Tamiami Trail (US-41), the Tamiami Trail, and can easily be combined with a day trip to Naples or Fort Myers if you’re driving yourself. ( Swamp buggy tours are available as well.)

3. Palm Beach, for shopping and glamour

  • Drive time: Approximately 1 hour, 20 minutes

Surfer on a beach at Palm Beach

About 90 minutes north of Miami, the island of Palm Beach has trendy shopping areas with a variety of boutiques and also has great waterfront parks and beaches. This barrier island is home to legendary resorts, exquisite mansions and historic landmarks.

It has long been popular with celebrities and fashionistas and is home to some of the country’s wealthiest people. A sightseeing tour will take you past some of its best-known homes, including Henry Flagler’s former residence — now the  Flagler Museum — and Mar-a-Lago. Built in the 1920’s by cereal-company heiress and socialite Marjorie Merriweather Post, it is now owned by Donald Trump.

4. Key Largo, for scuba diving and beaches

  • Drive time: Approximately 1 hour, 40 minutes
  • Related tour: Half Day Scuba Diving Trip in the Florida Keys

boats along a canal in Key Largo Florida

Key Largo is a beautiful island in the Florida Keys. Spanning 33 miles in length. It has an abundance of popular beaches, and many people go there to dive in the coral reef that’s a few miles offshore. There are also a range of water sports to get involved in like snorkeling, boating, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.

One of the highlight attractions on Key Largo is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which was the first underwater park in the United States. Visitors can expect to see some 250 species of tropical fish and over 80 varieties of coral.

The Visitor Center has a large aquarium where you can see some of these species – or you can see the reef on a glass-bottom boat tour. If you’re a diving enthusiast, then you will enjoy scuba diving or snorkeling in this renowned underwater destination.

5. Bimini Island, for an escape to the Bahamas

  • Travel time: Approximately 2 hours by ferry
  • Related tour: Bimini Express Ferry with Pickup & Beach Day Pass

Bimini Bahamas flora with ocean and sky on the horizon

Bring your passport, because this Miami day trip takes you off American soil! An island in the Bahamas, Bimini is an idyllic paradise that’s only 50 miles from Miami by boat. Once home to Ernest Hemingway and fabled to be the location of Ponce de Leon’s ‘fountain of youth’, Bimini is actually made up of three islands, so take your pick.

If you’re keen to say you’ve been to the Bahamas, then this is an opportunity not to be missed. Bimini has beaches galore but has only recently come onto the tourist radar. It gets few cruise ship visitors, which means it’s less crowded and touristy than Nassau.

A Bimini day trip from Miami would be the perfect opportunity to try out scuba diving or snorkeling, because there are many shipwrecks in the area. You can also tour the world-famous Bimini Shark Lab (suggested $10 donation) or see the Dolphin House, a small, charming museum that was built from all-recycled materials.

6. Naples, for relaxing and shopping

  • Drive time: Approximately 2 hours
  • Related tour: Mangrove Tunnels Kayak and Paddle Board Eco Tour

Pelican atop Naples City Dock

Naples is a great place to relax and unwind away from all the hustle and bustle of Miami. The city has picturesque houses, a quaint downtown area and lots of places to eat good food.

Many visitors spend time exploring the beaches and nature areas, but Naples also has a variety of shops and art galleries to enjoy. It’s also home to the Naples Philharmonic, which hosts regular musicals, orchestras and shows.

A great way to explore a city like Naples is by bike or, for an easier and more comfortable ride, you could try an electric trike tour.

7. Marathon and Middle Keys, for eco-tourism

  • Drive time: Approximately 2 hours, 20 minutes
  • Related tour: Florida Keys: Dockside Dolphin Experience

Pink clouds behind homes on Marathon Key Florida

Marathon, smack in the middle of the Florida Keys, has excellent sailing, fishing, diving, beaches, and eco-tourism activities. It also boasts great waterfront restaurants and water sports like jet-ski tours, paddle-boarding, and kayaking.

The Dolphin Research Center gives visitors the opportunity to interact with bottlenose dolphins, you can learn all about endangered sea turtles at the Turtle Hospital and Aquarium Encounters offers a range of interactive aquatic experiences.

ⓘ LIKE TO DRIVE? Marathon marks the beginning of the famous Seven Mile Bridge, one of the longest road bridges in the world. It connects the Middle Keys to the Lower Keys and was featured in a number of action movies, including Licence to Kill, True Lies, and Mission Impossible III, among others.

8. Fort Myers, for getting off the beaten track

  • Drive time: Approximately 2½ hours

Silhouette of Naples Pier at sunset

Located along Florida’s west coast, Fort Myers is a little off the beaten track. For history buffs, you can visit the historic estates where Thomas Edison and Henry Ford once lived.

Of course Fort Myers offers white, sandy beaches, but there’s also Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, which is especially great for families with children. Don’t miss the butterfly and raptors aviaries and daily shows. Another place to enjoy Florida nature is at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve. It has an interpretive center and an extensive boardwalk which is suitable for viewing wildlife, including the Florida alligator. Watch your step – they’re wild!

In the wintertime, check out Manatee Park . It’s a waterfront park where visitors can view these endangered marine animals in their natural habitat. Or you can join a guide and a small group to kayak through the mangrove forests of nearby Lovers Key. There’s a good chance you’ll see some of Florida’s unique wildlife.

9. Kennedy Space Center, for budding astronomers

  • Drive time: Approximately 3½ hours
  • Related tour: Private 12-hour Tour to Kennedy Space Center from Miami

Rocket launch at Kennedy Space Center

Have you always dreamed of going into space, being an astronaut, or seeing a spaceship in real life? A visit to Miami wouldn’t be complete without an outing to Cape Canaveral to see the Kennedy Space Center!

Named to honor President John F. Kennedy, the center hosts a range of exhibits and regular rocket launches. Yet even if you don’t visit when there’s a rocket launch happening, taking a tour of the center is just as exhilarating.

Are you enjoying this article? Pin it to Pinterest and share it with your friends.

One of the most exciting things on display in the center is the moonscape and lunar module exhibit. It depicts a scene from the first mission to land on the moon (Apollo 11).

If you don’t book a tour, we recommend buying your tickets ahead of time . There is sometimes a long line to get in.

10. Key West, for beaches and museums

  • Drive time: Approximately 4 hours

Southernmost Point Monument at the tip of Key West

Yes, it’s possible to do a day trip from Miami to Key West . Sure it makes for a long day, but it’s totally worth it. For one thing, if you enjoy road trips, driving the Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys is a one-of-a-kind experience. You will see some of the most spectacular scenery in the state and wish you had time to do a longer road trip through the Florida Keys.

There are many options on how to spend your time in colorful Key West, the southernmost island in the Florida Keys. This laid-back island offers active people a range of coastal activities that include sailing, snorkeling, diving, kayaking and fishing charters.

If you need to stay out of the sun (too much time on the beach, perhaps?) Key West has a variety of interesting historical sites to visit, as well. Book-lovers can’t miss the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, with its family of six-toed cats. History buffs should see the Little White House, where Harry S. Truman and various other presidents spent time during their terms in office, and nature lovers should check out Audubon House and Tropical Gardens.

Miami day trip gear you’ll need

straw bag filled with things you'll want to bring on a Florida day trip

Miami has a subtropical climate and is usually warm all year, although it can also rain quite often. So here’s an essential list of things to take along during any day trip from Miami:

  • Comfortable clothing
  • A hat with a brim
  • Rain jacket or travel umbrella
  • Insect repellent  – for no-see-ums and mosquitos
  • Binoculars  – especially if you go to the Everglades
  • Camera – we carry the Sony RX100 (point-and-shoot) and the Sony a7Rii (full-frame mirrorless)
  • Beach towels

Where to stay in Miami

We’d be remiss if we didn’t include a couple of places to stay in Miami.

  • We can personally recommend the Riviera Suites on 20th Street in the South Beach neighborhood. It’s a quiet place to stay within walking distance of restaurants and the beach.
  • If you prefer a hostel, Generator Miami gets consistently good reviews.

Final thoughts about Miami day trips

There is such a diversity of day trips you can take from Miami, and the city makes a great base from which to explore Florida and the Bahamas.

If you don’t have much time in Miami, then it might be worth considering day trips that include transport, to make it easier to navigate your way to the different places. There are also several day trip destinations that are close enough to each other, so that you could include them in one day or make a weekend of it. For example, going to Key Largo and Marathon, or visiting Naples and Fort Myers.

Whether you’re looking for historical, cultural, or nature-based activities, you’ll be able to find a day trip from Miami that fits your interests.

Why winter is seriously the best time to explore South Florida from Miami

Just a short hop away from Miami are some of Florida 's most alluring, charismatic and well-known attractions. And as the summer heat cools to winter's milder climate, it's the perfect time to explore the wilder side of South and Central Florida. In fact winter is considered the best time of the year to visit by Florida lovers.

When you're tired of clubbing and celebrity-spotting in Miami, head to these incredible Florida sights, just a short drive from the city. Here are the top day trips from Miami.

Gringotts Bank Dragon breathing fire The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Orlando. Universal Studios Orlando is a theme park in Orlando, Florida.

Theme Parks in Orlando

In 1971 Walt Disney World opened the gates of Magic Kingdom in Orlando ; today, it includes more than 25 hotels, four theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom), more than 200 restaurants, and two water parks.

Winter is the quiet season for Florida's theme parks, with most kids back in school; for offseason travelers, that means shorter lines and cooler temperatures.

Universal Orlando is a pedestrian-friendly and intimate complex with two excellent theme parks (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure), eight first-rate resorts, and a carnival-like restaurant and nightlife district (CityWalk) connected by lovely gardened paths or a quiet wooden-boat shuttle.

Also try checking out Old Florida’s Cypress Gardens, just south of town, kitschy Gatorland and lesser attractions sprinkled throughout the city.

How to get to Orlando's theme parks: From Miami (via a car) take the Florida Turnpike. Via train, there is a daily Amtrak route. For flights, Orlando Melbourne International Airport is the closest airport to most destinations on the Space Coast.

Everglades National Park

An easy day trip from Miami, the Everglades provides the perfect excuse to escape from the rat race and reconnect with nature. Here, you'll be able to witness alligators’ backs breaking the water, anhingas flexing their wings before breaking into a corkscrew dive or the slow, dinosaur flap of a great blue heron gliding over its domain.

Beginning in November and stretching through April, the dry season clears up the skies over Everglades National Park, making this the perfect time to explore without the threat of wet weather delays.

The Glades should be approached with the same silence and gentle persuasion it shows its inhabitants. Come by car and canoe, bike, kayak or walk around the park. To understand the way a nutrient-rich patch of water produces a mosquito that feeds a frog, who becomes lunch for a ‘gator, who snaps up a fish that gets speared by an anhinga under these long, low marsh winds, you need to be still.

In the quiet spaces, you realize that the Everglades, so often dismissed as a swamp, are more beautiful than all the flash Miami can produce. South Beach changes by the day. The Glades have beautifully endured forever, and if we’re very lucky, they’ll last that much longer.

How to get to Everglades National Park: From Miami, take MacArthur Causeway to FL-907 N. The trek takes about 42 minutes by car.

A conical lighthouse, with a few palm trees around its base, is framed by a cloud-filled sky on its spit of land jutting into a calm bay

Biscayne National Park

Just to the east of the Everglades is Biscayne National Park, where a portion of the world's third-largest reef sits (along with mangrove forests and the northernmost Florida Keys).  Fortunately, this unique 300-square-mile park is easy to explore independently with a canoe or via a glass-bottom boat tour.

Biscayne is unique as far as national parks go, requiring a little extra effort to see the reef, and a lot more reward for this work. This is some of the best reef-viewing and snorkeling you'll find in the US, outside Hawaii and nearby Key Largo.

How to get to Biscayne National Park: From Miami, take the Ronald Reagan Turnpike to FL-989 S/SW. It takes a little over an hour to get to the Dante Fascell Visitor Center.

Driftwood signs point the way and show the mileage from Key West to Miami, Honolulu, Dry Tortugas and Havana

Florida Keys

Take one part, Florida residents. Add snowbirds. Sprinkle with a large number of Cuban immigrants and Eastern European guest workers. Include gay community (may consist of “sedate partners who just bought art gallery” and “screaming drag queens of the night”). Garnish with Bahamians.

Set attitudes at “tolerant” and “eccentric.” Turn up the eccentric. Finish with rum. Lots of rum. Bake in searing Florida sun and serve on 45 islands scattershot over a 113-mile-long chain, connected by one long-ass road. Throw in the government of the only republic to successfully secede from the US. Yes, those Conch Republic flags say “We Seceded Where Others Failed,” and that’s the Florida Keys in a conch shell: equal parts tacky, quirky and, damn it, alluring.

Hang out here for a while and you start turning into a “Freshwater Conch” – a permanent transplant – real quick. The Keys are out there; it’s three or four hours at a good clip from Key West, at the end of the chain, back to Miami. Come out this far, and you either contract cabin fever or fall in love.

How to get to the Florida Keys: From Miami, take US-1 south. The trek takes over an hour and a half.

Young child looking at constellations

Space Coast

The space shuttle is to the Space Coast what pastel hotels are to South Beach, and you’ll be amazed by the celestial themes swirling in every gas station, cafe and hotel lobby within a meteorite’s throw. Even the area code is 321! In contrast to the high-tech buildings and bad space puns, however, the area also boasts some of Florida’s most deliciously undeveloped areas.

The Space Center only uses about 10,000 of it's 140,000 acres for its purposes. The rest of the area is set aside as a federally-protected wildlife refuge, so don’t be surprised to see sunning alligators, soaring birds (including bald eagles), and rooting wild pigs, giving new meaning to the term “government pork.”

Along the coast, you can find some of Florida’s finest sea turtle observation programs and among the most pristine beaches in the state. For adventure-holics, the waves from Sebastian Inlet to Cocoa Beach offer the state’s gnarliest surfing, and just west of the barrier island the lagoon is dotted with quiet, undeveloped islands, perfect for wiling away warm summer days.

How to get to Space Coast:  From Miami, take the Florida Turnpike and I-95 north. The drive takes nearly four hours.

Sand Dollar Shelling has also found more Junonia Shells than any other company, an incredibly rare and coveted shell!

The Florida Domes float above the water while the sunset casts a pink glow on the clouds overhead.

Biscayne Bay

If you’re looking for an exciting Miami day trip, then why not head over to a national park in Florida? One of our favorites, and only an hour and 14 minutes away from the city, is Biscayne National Park!

The park is an expansive 172,971 acres and 95 percent is water. This national park is home to Elliott Key, which is the largest island in the park.

There are fun activities for everyone at this national park. From guided eco-adventures, fishing and lobstering, boating, paddling, snorkeling, camping, observing wildlife, to relaxing and admiring the view, everyone will enjoy the time spent at this National Park in Florida.

There is no daily entrance fee for this national park , however if you plan to camp overnight on either Elliott Key or Boca Chita Key, there is a fee of $25.

Coral Castle

For those that want a little mystery out of their day trips from Miami, consider visiting Coral Castle. One of the most beautiful castles in Florida , its origins to this day are still a mystery! And at only an hour and 13 minutes away, you’ll easily be musing its mysteries on your drive home!

We know that from 1923-1951, Edward Leedskalnin carved 1,000 tons of coral rock. We know that he designed an elaborate rock garden. What we don’t know is how he did it by himself. Leedskalnin said ““knew the secrets used to build the pyramids.” Some have said he had supernatural powers.

What we do know is that Coral Castle remains an everlasting monument to his lover that canceled their wedding the day before the ceremony. The beauty endures in its exquisite rock formations, shaded by bougainvillea trees.

Among the garden’s features is a 9-ton gate that opens with the touch of a finger, a Polaris telescope, and functional rocking chairs. All of them made completely of coral stone.

When you walk through the castle, you’ll be in awe of the structure. While scientists debate how Leedskalnin built this castle, it stands as a testament to the power of love. The next time you’re in the city, Coral Castle is a must of all day trips from Miami.

Miami Day Trips 2+ Hours Away

The bahamas.

Taking a ferry to the Bahamas is one of the best Miami day trips and one of the best escapes from Florida! It’s definitely easier than you might think! With the ferry launching from Fort Lauderdale and the ferry ride lasting about two hours, you can get to paradise in just over 3 hours total!

The Balearia sails from Fort Lauderdale into the Bahamas port of your choice, either Freeport or Bimini! The cheapest ferry tickets cost $198 for a round trip. If you decide to extend your day trip from Miami into a weekend getaway , you have the option of extending your trip by booking a hotel through the Balearia.

Dock in Freeport, the main city on Grand Bahama, and you can enjoy the oceanfront Lucaya district, with beaches, resorts, and shopping! Check out Deadman’s Reef for the most beautiful snorkeling. Head up the coast to Lucayan National park to explore extensive underwater caves, not to mention great kayaking and nature trails.

Bimini, the closer of the two docks, is only 50 miles away from Florida’s coast. Bimini is also the less-touristy of the two docks, especially when compared to a place like Nassau. You can expect glorious beaches, incredible game fishing, luxurious food and accommodations!

The beaches and mountains of the Bahamas, one of the best Miami day trips.

Bahia Honda State Park

While driving to the keys one of the most popular day trips from Miami, a lot of people overlook the natural beauty of Bahia Honda State Park on Bahia Honda Key! Only 3 hours away from the city, Bahia Honda provides the most relaxing beach escape for weary travelers.

Visitors to the park experience breathtaking views of what makes Florida the Sunshine State. Palm-lined shores are lapped up by gin-clear waters. Balmy breezes will keep you warm year-round in this South Florida State Park.

Explore the world just underneath the waters of Bahia Honda on a self-guided  snorkeling  tour. Among the seagrass beds and rocky bottoms, you’ll catch a glimpse of spiny lobster, starfish, and queen conch poking their heads out to say hello.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing to do at Bahia Honda is star gaze. Once the sun sets on the turquoise waters, stars fill the night sky and the beaches become a magical wonderland. Walk the  Old Bahia Honda Bridge  and  gaze up at the constellations , or just lie back in a beach chair and let the majesty wash over you.

The beautiful beach of Bahia Honda with the old bridge in the background, one of the most perfect day trips from Miami.

Dry Tortugas

If you’re looking for a true adventure out of your Miami day trips, consider heading out to the Dry Tortugas. One of the most beautiful national parks in America, we will warn you, this trek is not for the faint of heart as the journey will take you a bit of time to get there.

First, start by driving to Key West. From there, you’ll board the Yankee Freedom III, which will take you 70 miles west to Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson. The drive plus the ferry will take you in total about 4 and half hours to get there. You can also charter a seaplane for a faster journey, but this option is more expensive.

The beaches on Dry Tortugas National Park don’t come anymore whiter or beautiful. The white sand slopes into crustal clear waters creating a perfect tropical paradise. Some areas are no swim zones and some reserved for snorkelers.

Take a tour of Fort Jefferson to learn about the island chain’s sordid history as a prison, out in the middle of the ocean. At its height, it housed nearly 2000 people and was described as “a dark, mean place.” You can also take a self-guided tour if this doesn’t seem amenable to you.

Camping is also available on Dry Tortugas if you want to spend more than one day here. Keep in mind, this is extremely primitive camping. There is no fresh water on the island, so you will have to bring your own or get some from the ferry. But the good news is no fresh water means no mosquitos!

Check out our full guide for exploring Dry Tortugas National Park!

Water washes up on the beach of Dry Tortugas National Parks, a can't miss attraction in the Florida Keys.

One of the most overlooked of the Florida Keys is Marathon Key. When planning some upcoming day trips from Miami, consider exploring Marathon Key, only 2 hours and 42 minutes away from the city!

An aquarium and conservation center, Marathon Marine Park is perfect for the entire family! In addition to multiple aquatic exhibits, you can also explore four different touch tanks: Tide Pool, Nursery, Stingray Cove, and Giant Isopod! The more adventurous can take encounters with sting rays and even big sharks!

Then go snorkeling at Pigeon Key, a small island directly under the 7-Mile Bridge which takes you over the keys. The boat launches from Marathon Key, and once your arrive, you’re free to hit the water. We recommend trying the area just off the dock, near the beach, and around the opening of Pigeon Key’s saltwater pool. Be careful, the currents around the island might be swift.

You can also get up and close to sea turtles ! The Turtle Hospital helps to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles. And you can support the cause while also getting up close to these endangered sea creatures by booking a tour. But be sure to book a tour in advance, because they fill up very quickly!

2. West Palm Beach

Distance: 72.4 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr 14 mins

A less than 2-hour trip north of Miami will land you in West Palm Beach . The serene environment makes for an elegant Miami day trip. It’s a vibrant place with pulsing energy though, and incredible beauty.  Palm-lined avenues, sparkling waterways, and interesting cultural institutions await you in West Palm Beach. West Palm Beach was created as a haven for the rich, by Henry Flagler.  His mansion is now a museum you can visit .

If you have kids in tow, head for Manatee Lagoon where you can learn all about the cows of the sea and watch them play in the lagoon.  It’s best in the winter months. The Cox (South Florida) Science Center & Aquarium is also a fun day for the kiddos.  Along with interactive and educational exhibits on the human brain and an outdoor science trail, the complex also includes a 10,000-gallon aquarium with stingrays and seahorses. The exhibit professionally explains the importance of the coral reef ecosystems of the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a planetarium and mini-golf course, a full day of fun!

West Palm Beach is also home to the state’s biggest art museum—the Norton Museum of Art , which boasts works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, among others. No matter where you choose to wander in Palm Beach, you can’t go wrong in this ritzy, stunning coastal town.

3. Coral Castle

Distance: 36.3 miles

Travel Time: 41 minutes

There’s a castle in Florida? Yep, yep there is! And it’s a bit of a mystery.  Supposedly, from 1923-1951, a local named Edward Leekskalnin carved 1,000 tons of coral into an elaborate castle and garden. The gate itself weighs 9 tons, but it opens with the push of a finger.  He also carved stone chairs, a telescope, and countless sculptures.

Ed gave guided tours of the Coral Castle for years, proudly charging just 10 cents. So, what’s the mystery?  Well, no one ever saw Ed make any of these things.  They just seemed to appear overnight.  It lead to local folktales about Ed’s mysterious abilities, and Ed did nothing to stop the theories. He would only say that he “used the secrets used to build the pyramids.”

However it got there, Coral Castle is a fun tour and certainly one of the most unique things you will see in the Miami area. If you want to just make a quick stop-in, Coral Castle can easily be toured on your way to the Everglades National Park Visitor Center in nearby Homestead.

4. Islamorada

Distance: 85.0 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr 39 mins

While much of the Florida Keys are too far to drive for a day trip, the small beach community of Islamorada is the exception. It’s less than a 2-hour drive down “Overseas Highway” from Miami, but it is a world away. Go for a swim in the calm waters of Anne’s Beach. Learn everything there is to know about the history of underwater diving and peruse the giant collection of vintage diving gear at the History of Diving Museum , or watch the dolphins and sea lions entertain at the Theater of the Sea .

The community is famous for sport fishing, and boat trips and fish-feeding tours are readily available from multiple vendors. Stop in the Green Turtle Inn , a staple on the island, serving up the Barney’s Fish Sandwich since 1947. It’s been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and it is super tasty! The Florida Keys Brewing Co. is a great place to grab a brew and relax.

On the third Thursday of every month, Islamorada hosts the Artwalk, and Old Highway becomes lined with musicians, jewelry makers, and local artists of every kind!

5. Marathon

Distance: 115.4 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 18 mins

For an off-the-beaten-path day trip from Miami, head for often-overlooked Marathon Key. For the kiddos, the Marathon Marin Park offers numerous aquatic exhibits plus four touch tanks. They can get up close and personal with stingrays and nursing sharks, which is super exciting, and the conservation center provides excellent educational opportunities on marine life and conservation.  Also, consider visiting the Turtle Hospital and help in the rehabilitation of rescued sea turtles.

Marathon offers every water sport that a tropical getaway should.  The small island packs a big punch with fishing charters, snorkeling galore, diving, paddleboard rentals, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, and sailing and parasailing adventures.  You can also take to the skies with a romantic helicopter flight over the stunning emerald waters, or go for a vintage tour on the cute land trolley.

After a full day, the quaint restaurants along the waterfront are a foodie’s paradise.  Sink into a comfy chair, with the world’s best view, and chow down on the fresh fare!

6. Bahia Honda State Park

Distance: 130.6 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 38 mins

Bahia Key is a truly rejuvenating day trip from Miami.  Crystal clear waters, lapping gently again palm-tree-lined shores, provide the perfect atmosphere for rest and relaxation. The warm breezes are present year-round in Bahia Honda State Park , and the waters are bursting with life.

Take a snorkel and explore the seagrass for Queen Conchs, spiny lobsters, and starfish. If you don’t mind a late drive back, stay on the key for a while after the panoramic sunset and look up! The night sky here is perfectly black, and the stars just blaze differently here. Enjoy an hour or so counting the bright beauties and exploring the beach by moonlight before heading back to the city!

7. Biscayne National Park

Distance: 39.5 miles +

Travel Time: 49 mins drive, plus a 15-minute boat ride

Biscayne Bay is an excellent day trip from Miami for history buffs and water sport enthusiasts.  While you can technically drive to the Dante Fascell Visitor Center on Key Biscayne and it is an informational stop, you can’t see much of the Biscayne National Park from there. The U.S. Park’s Center’s largest marine park is 95 % underwater, so it is best reached by your own boat or a guided boat tour.  The boat ride takes about an hour and 15 mins from the city.

The park is gigantic, covering 173,000 acres and boasting several small islands, coral reefs, mangrove forests, and an immense population of aquatic wildlife. Biscayne Bay is popular for scuba diving, especially along the Maritime Heritage Trail. The historic trail is laced with shipwrecks for the adventurous explorer. Divers, snorkelers, and eco-tour guests will get to meet the natives as well! Crocodiles, sea turtles, the Smalltooth Sawfish, and manatees all inhabit the mangrove forests of the park, and they will be glad to welcome you.

Land lovers will enjoy the hiking trails and sightseeing that the islands offer! Make sure to check out Boca Chita Lighthouse on the key of the same name. The charming, 1930s beauty has a stunning panoramic view of the area! Check out the raised homes in Stiltsville and tour around the largest island in the park, Elliott Key. For an adventurous day outside Miami, you can’t do better than Biscayne Bay.

8. The Bahamas

Distance: 30.1 miles to catch the ferry

Travel Time: 36 mins drive, plus a 3-hour boat ride

The Bahamas is pushing it for a day trip, as you will need to drive to Fort Lauderdale and then hop the ferry, making it around a 3-hour journey, but if you leave early, it’s totally worth it. You have two choices on the Balearia Ferry, the ports of Freeport or Bimini.

Freeport is the main city in Grand Bahama.  You can hit up Deadman’s Reef for some great snorkeling.  Explore the underwater caves at the Lucayan National Park or just lounge on the awesome beaches!

Bimini is the closer of the two ports and is probably a better day trip option.  It also has the benefit of being way less touristy, as there are no cruise ships. Bimini is, simply, Caribbean paradise! It was once home to Ernest Hemingway, as well as the reported location of Ponce de Leon’s famous “fountain of youth.”

Bimini does have a few interesting stops like the Bimini Shark Lab where you can join in on real ocean research on one of the field expeditions . If sharks scare the pants off of you, then head for the innovative Dolphin House , a small museum built from recycled materials.

You will need your passport for this day trip as you will be changing countries.  If this seems daunting to you, don’t worry!  In some ways, it is one of the easiest day trips from Miami. You don’t have to drive or plan an itinerary.  The ferry will drop you off in Alice Town, where you will find stunning beaches and a plethora of seafood shacks to choose from!

Bimini might be one of our favorite day trips on the list.  It’s easy.  It’s stunning, and you get to check off a new country in a day!

9. Key Largo

Distance: 68.9 miles

Travel Time: 1 hr 18 mins

Key Largo is the very first stop along the chain of the Florida Keys. It’s one of the best day trips from Miami for chilling. Beach hammocking is the main pastime here—there’s even a state park with “hammock” in the name (although it’s a hammock of a different kind). You won’t find actual hammocks here, just miles of lush forested trails for hikers and bikers. For the more active traveler, Key Largo won’t disappoint you either, there’s plenty here to fill a day!

Head for the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center and make friends with the almost 100 rescued birds. Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn once filmed a movie here, and you can take a beautiful dinner cruise on the “ African Queen ,” the authentic boat from the movie.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park was the first submerged park in the United States. It is loaded with tropical fish and over 80 species of coral. The visitor center has a great aquarium and you can book a glass-bottom boat tour if you don’t feel like putting in all the work to snorkel or scuba. No matter how you view it, the underwater world of Key Largo is stunning!

Distance: 127.1 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs

The Gulf Coast town of Naples is a luxurious day trip, a straight shot, 2 hours west, of Miami. Plus, you get to drive through the beautiful Everglades. The beaches of Naples are beautiful, and you can escape the crazy crowds of Miami’s South Beach.

Naples has incredible nightlife, so bring some fancy duds and hit 5th Avenue for fancy dining and overpriced drinks. In the daylight, there is plenty of designer clothing and home decor boutiques as well.

Golfers are in heaven in Naples too, with plenty of options to choose from.  Visit the Naples Botanical Gardens for a romantic stroll through manicured gardens, then head for sunset on the Naples Pier. End your evening at the Artis Naples with classical jazz or a comedy show!

11. Everglades National Park

Distance: 9.8 miles

Travel Time: 23 mins

The Everglades is a massive, two-million-acre, wonderland of wilderness in South Central Florida. It’s only 45 mins from Downtown Miami and a must-do day trip! Head for the Shark Valley entrance. Just head west, on I-95, until you are surrounded by swamp!

The Shark Valley Visitor Center is your first stop. If you are a sucker for nature trails, you can walk or bike the 15-mile trail starting at the center. Along the trail, you can enjoy a 65-foot observation tower overlooking the marsh. Guided tours are also available from the visitor center. There are miles of hiking and biking trails throughout the park, but watch out for killer mosquitos and, of course, the Florida Panther.

Kayaking is popular in the park, but beware Burmese Pythons and the American Alligator call these waters home. Land lovers enjoy the easy-to-explore Anhinga Trail, where you will certainly see some of Florida’s terrifying wildlife. If you are an animal lover, there is no better day trip for you than a trip to the wetlands of the Everglades.

Ever heard of “slough slogging?” No? Well, you are about to learn.  Slough slogging gets you right into the action.  Basically, it is a wet hike.  You will join your ranger guide and hop right into the knee-deep water of Shark Valley Slough.  It is the quintessential way to explore the Everglades. Unless, of course, you consider a tour through the Everglades on a classic airboat. This is the best way to get a true grasp of the scale of the enormous park.

The Everglades are like no other national park.  In fact, there is really nowhere in the world like it.  This is a day trip from Miami that is an absolute must for any informed traveler!

12. Big Cypress National Preserve

Distance: 47.3 miles

Travel Time: 5 mins

The Big Cypress National Preserve is the little brother of the Florida Everglades and is essential in the health of the Everglade ecosystem. It’s really just a huge swamp, 729,000 acres of it, to be exact. Why isn’t it just part of the national park then? Well, because locals didn’t want it that way. Access to the swampland would be very restricted if it became part of the national park, so in 1974, it was made a national preserve to protect it but still give access to this plentiful timber for Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes. They preserve their traditional way of life here, using the timber for their heritage homes called “chickees.”

The preserve was actually the first national preserve in the United States, and it’s another place in Florida to see the endangered wildlife that only this part of the country offers. It is an easy place to see explore mangrove forests, see alligators, and explore panther tracks.

The best part about Big Cypress is that it is free!

13. Fort Myers

Distance: 158.3 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 24 mins

Fort Myers is located on Florida’s West Coast and was once the home of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.  Popular activities include tours of their historic estates. Along with historic sites, you can visit the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve and get up close and personal with the wild alligators.  It’s over 3,500 acres of wetland ecosystem and is a wonderful small area to see turtles, alligators, and adorable otters.  If you prefer not to be eaten by a wild beast, then check out the Calusa Nature Center, which not only has an awesome planetarium but showcases less-dealy butterflies and birds in its daily aviary shows.

For a one-of-a-kind evening, hop aboard the Murder Mystery Dinner Train . This unique ride takes you on a 40-mile train ride that ends at Colonial Station in Fort Myers. Board the elegant box car and join the mystery.  Decipher the clues and put on your best sleuthing cap to find the murderer.

The trip includes a wonderful five-course dinner, consisting of an appetizer, soup, salad, choice of three entrees, and a dessert, prepared fresh for you onboard the train! There is also a large selection of wine, beer, and cocktails to sharpen your mind. While your food is being prepared,  the live murder mystery show will play out. Three and a half hours later, you will reach your destination, the killer found, and your stomach full!  It’s a fun evening, with fabulous food, and tons of thrills!

Long journey on the coach but worth it. You'll be taken 7 miles offshore to a coral reef, great briefing and introduction by the crew and amazing sights when snorkeling. Free bar on the return, over the azure waters. It was magical and a memory that will last for a lifetime. Thanks to all who made it an incredible day! Read more Written March 25, 2024
  • reanas2024 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles HORRIBLE, I seriously would rather vomit all day than have to deal with this rude and dishonest company again. DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!! I had the worst experience with them I have ever had. We had booked a tour and arrived to our meeting spot early and was told 20 minutes before that our tour was cancelled due to "maintenance." So, they rescheduled us for the next day. The next day we arrived on time and called letting them know we arrived and they DIDNT EVEN KNOW WE HAD SCHEDULED. We were supposed to meet at 10:45am and at 10:57am they told us that they cancelled again due to a marathon blocking the dock. I got a text saying I would be refunded plus extra for issues and inconvenience. I had to call four times before anyone would respond to me and got screamed at on the phone for asking for the refund plus extra for all the issues, WHICH WAS PROMISED TO ME. We had to take ubers to get there and waste a lot of time. This company was incredibly rude and obviously do not respect their customers at all. I have never had such a terrible experience with a company. DO NOT BOOK WITH BIG DAVE TOURS UNLESS YOU WANT TO DEAL WITH A RUDE COMPANY OWNER WHO TELLS LIES. Read more Written January 31, 2024
  • Voyager03816646941 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Truly dreadful. DO NOT USE. This outfit are truly terrible. Appalling. DO NOT USE. Our booking was for 1400. They asked us to be there at 1345 which we were. The transfer boat did not arrive until 1430. We didn’t start on the jet skis until 1530/1545. The guide told us to wait and then would take us on to another area where there was some form of refreshments etc. We were just left to our own devices around the drop off pontoon with no briefing as to the form for the session. We were expecting a tour around the Miami Bay Area. No refreshments available for the last 5 hours….mot even water! I doubt we’ll be back to our hotel until 1800. One of our party will have arrived this afternoon without us being there to greet her as a consequence. The jet skis themselves were in poor condition as was the transfer boat; which itself also arrived with no fuel which added to our impatience. The guide we were told we’d get never arrived! The previous group was late finishing as two of the jet skis ran out of fuel. Seriously, you couldn’t write this stuff!!! AVOID. Read more Written December 27, 2023

This was a nice activity; about a nice 90 min boat ride tour viewing celebrity mansions. The tour guide was very good and she had a good sense of humor. The only annoying thing about this trip was trying to find where the meeting point was. It wasn’t super descriptive and the trip details said something about Big Dave Tours kiosk which doesn’t exist. We finally found where we were supposed to go but by that time we missed our reservation and had to wait until the next one. Overall it was a nice excursion to do. At 10:24 while we were finding our way there I received an email cancelling our booking. No call just an email that I did not get until we arrived and we’re waiting at the pier. Don’t waste your time go to Bayside and rent a boat there. We paid for parking and had parked the car already. The original ATM dispensed its first bill of cash in London circa 1967, but leave it to Miami to write its own ATM history with a bit of Floridian flair. In the mid-1990s, Miami Beach’s Citibank had a unique problem to solve: how to provide increasing numbers of in-line skaters with ATM access, when they couldn't get up the bank steps and into the branch. Lauren Sanchez Is Assigned a Reporter—These Are the Multimillion-Dollar Homes To Stake Out

There are power couples ( Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce , Beyoncé  and JAY Z , Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck , to name a few), and then there are power couples.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are in a power category of their own thanks to the hundreds of billions of dollars at their disposal.

Recognizing this dynamic, the Daily Beast recently announced it was seeking a reporter to cover Sanchez exclusively . Of course, we began pondering the many mansions where she could be coming and going. At this point in time, it’s a worldwide guessing game of “Where in the world is Lauren Sanchez?”

The former broadcast journalist, pilot, and media personality certainly has an array of choices.

Bezos and his former wife, MacKenzie Scott , divorced in 2019. Since then, he and Sanchez have been busy scooping up luxe properties from Maui to Miami . The new crop of homes is in addition to the ones he owned during his marriage.

Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, has a fortune that’s estimated at a mind-boggling $199 billion. As of 2019, Bezos was among the largest landowners in the United States.

Let’s take a peek into their extensive, exclusive, and very expensive property collection. We can’t say whether you’ll see Sanchez, but at least we know where to look.

A few mansions in Florida

The couple recently made news with a series of splashy purchases in South Florida. Given Bezos’ net worth, it’s no surprise he tends to buy in bulk.

He and Sanchez picked up three pricey properties on exclusive Indian Creek Island in the Miami area.

After buying two adjoining homes for a reported $147 million, he dropped an additional $90 million on a third home on the isle.

According to Bloomberg , Bezos plans to live in the third home while he razes the first two.

island trip from miami

The enclave known as the Billionaire Bunker has only 41 homes. Bezos’ neighbors on the isle include Tom Brady and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner .

As Bezos stocks up in Florida, he leaves the state of Washington further in his rearview mirror. The Pacific Northwest was where he kept his official residence for decades and where he founded the company that made him billions of dollars.

The world’s second-richest man announced his decision to become a Florida man last year .

Record-breaking buy in Beverly Hills

Over on the West Coast, the couple also made waves with a big buy. Bezos reportedly purchased the Warner Estate in Beverly Hills from media mogul David Geffen in an off-market deal in 2020. He spent $165 million on the legacy mansion, a California record at the time.

While we wondered if perhaps the billionaire had overpaid , his decision to buy the 9-acre estate was calculated.

According to the Hollywood Reporter , Bezos toured some 40 residences in Greater Los Angeles before engaging the owner of the spread he eventually purchased. The two apparently dispensed with listing agents, opting to negotiate a deal aboard Geffen’s yacht.

The spread in Beverly Hills includes the 13,600-square-foot, Georgian-style mansion from the 1930s, numerous guesthouses, a tennis court, and a nine-hole golf course.

Geffen picked up the place in 1990 for $47.5 million and embarked on an extensive remodel. It’s a good guess that Bezos might also add his own touches to the estate filled with Hollywood history.

While married, he and Scott owned two Beverly Hills properties worth a reported $55 million. Postdivorce, Scott donated those homes to an affordable housing charity.

Wowie in Maui

After the wheeling and dealing in SoCal, surely the couple needed to take a break. Where better than Hawaii?

In 2021, Bezos and Sanchez picked up a 14-acre estate on Maui . The off-market transaction was said to be in the neighborhood of $78 million.

Known as the Carter Estate, the property is located on the island’s southern shore. And, like the L.A. transaction, this deal was also off-market.

The property includes a 4,500-square-foot main house, a 1,700-square-foot guesthouse, and a 700-square-foot pool. The holding encompasses seven parcels, including a fish pond with a white-sand beach.

Local agents praised the property’s privacy and seclusion, key factors in Bezos’ big buy.

Empire state of mind

In 2019, Bezos made a real estate play in the Big Apple , picking up a penthouse, along with two apartments below it, for about $80 million .

(Realtor.com)

Located downtown in a historic building converted into condos, the three-floor abode is the building’s crown jewel: It measures 10,000 square feet, and it has 5,730 square feet of terraces on all four sides.

Along with five bedrooms and 5.5 baths, it has a ballroom and a library. One floor holds an observatory, and there are views of the Empire State building.

In 2020, Bezos dropped an additional $16 million for a fourth apartment in the building.

Washington, DC, digs

The owner of the Washington Post also keeps a mansion in the nation’s capital. He picked up the enormous residence in 2017 for a reported $19 million. The compound, a former museum, has two buildings, a chauffeur’s residence, and a garage. It totals nearly 27,000 square feet.

The posh property is located in the Kalorama neighborhood, where plenty of DC power players have called home , including Michelle and Barack Obama and Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump .

Washington compound

Bezos had a home in Medina, WA , since 1998, when he picked up one house, and then a second, with his ex-wife. He wound up with more than $60 million worth of real estate on the shores of Lake Washington. In 2010, the then-couple embarked on a reported $28 million renovation of the property.

Bezos has since relocated to Florida, so don’t expect to see Sanchez traipsing around Puget Sound anytime soon.

Texas ranch

Bezos’ West Texas ranch , which he purchased in 2004, accounts for the majority of his land holdings, reported to be somewhere around 400,000 acres.

The property is the site of Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, and was the setting for a Vogue feature on Sanchez. The property apparently includes an underground, 10,000-year clock and an Astronaut Village.

Sanchez told the magazine that she’s planning to go to space aboard one of Blue Origin’s suborbital rocket flights.

The two also spend time on their yacht, Koru. It’s apparently where Bezos proposed to Sanchez and was the setting for an at-sea engagement party that included the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Bill Gates .
