Nassau Cruise Port has six operational cruise berths which can accommodate three Oasis-Class vessels simultaneously. There is 700 feet of mega yacht dockage space available within The Marina. When the port project is completed, there will be dedicated pick-up and drop-off locations for water-based tours and water ferries. The berths at Nassau Cruise Port are undergoing refurbishment to provide improved passenger experiences and a more efficient vessel interface process. March 2, 2022, Nassau Cruise Port had its first six ship day, with six large cruise ships berthed at once.

The first phase of the project, which involves the demolition of current buildings and structures, is underway.

Phase two involves completing the marine works and making upgrades to existing infrastructure. Expansion of the port was recently completed through the addition of a sixth berth, which increases berthing capacity and allows Nassau Cruise Port to host three Oasis-Class vessels at once. Marine works are underway and nearing completion.

In phase three, landside and upland works will be completed. The project will include a new, iconic, arrivals terminal, a Junkanoo Museum, an Authentically Bahamian Marketplace, an Amphitheater, a coral reef exhibit, food and beverage and entertainment spaces.

Prince George Wharf, with three long piers with six berths, near Rawson Square is in the heart of Nassau. Downtown is less than a 15 minute walk away.

On stepping ashore at Prince George Wharf, cruisers will disembark through the colorful Festival Place Welcome center, designed to resemble a Bahamian village with stands selling arts, crafts and tempting island treats such as coconut and pineapple tarts.

From casinos, cabaret shows, magic acts & acrobatics to moonlight dinner cruises or theatre performances, there are more options for nightlife in Nassau and Paradise Island than there are hours in the day to experience them all.

Scoot around the island on a rented motor scooter, rental car or bicycle (be sure to drive on the left-hand side of the road, British style); or cruise out to spend the day scuba diving or snorkeling the coral reefs; go fishing for dolphin, tuna or wahoo; play tennis or golf; take an Out Island excursion or just lay back to snooze in the sun. Visit the historic forts or shop for bargains along Bay Street, Nassau's famous international shopping location. Liquor, perfume, jewelry and china are favorite items for duty-free shoppers, along with fine local and international crafts plus native goods, from handmade yards of batik to fine jewelry & Rolex watches. The best buys and shopping bargains can be found among the straw craft items and souvenirs at the Straw Market.  The stores on Bay Street are flanked by picturesque, pastel pink-colored Colonial-style Government buildings erected in the early 1800s by Loyalists, including the Houses of Parliament, the old Colonial Secretary's Office and the Supreme Court all surrounding a marble statue of Queen Victoria. Parliament Square in downtown Nassau Bahamas is the traditional center of Bahamian government. Each season, the Opening Ceremonies of the Supreme Court fill the square with pomp and pageantry. Further downtown stands Fort Charlotte . Built in 1788, it is complete with moat, open battlements, even dungeons.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The historic center of Nassau occupies an area about twelve blocks long and six blocks deep, and can be easily explored on foot.

Taxis are plentiful and can be hired in advance or flagged down in the street. Look for the Bahamahost sticker in the window. Rates are fixed, but surcharges apply for more than two people. Tips are about 15 per cent. The fare is $9 plus $2 bridge toll between downtown Nassau and Paradise Island.

Many taxis also offer tours, in general fun and not expensive.

The Nassau Water Taxi departs every 30 minutes from behind the Straw Market to Paradise Island, operating daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. The round trip cost is $8. Notes: Though the trip takes just 10 minutes, the water taxi may not depart on time.

Choose between jumping on one of the many bikes for hire or rent a motor scooter which costs from US$25(£13.50) to US$35 (£19) a day.

Nassau's Sister Island - Paradise Island Venture east on Bay Street from the city's core and you come to a bridge that takes you to "Paradise," with posh luxury resorts (including the world famous Atlantis Bahamas Resort), the Caribbean's largest casino, plus exciting nightlife on an island formerly called "Hog."

There are two ways to get to the Atlantis--ferry or taxi. The taxi is much quicker and certainly easier--about $6 per person each way. The ferry is $4 each way($8 round trip), but it can be crowded and you have to wait until they fill the boat up.

As you go east, just past the bridge to Paradise Island, there is the boating heart of Nassau / Paradise Island with a number of marinas with boats for hire. The East End is also a delightful residential area showing the full flavor of Nassau's colonial past in its architecture & horticulture. Big houses with wide breezy verandas face the sea.

Pearl Island Located just eight miles from Nassau and one mile east of Paradise Island, Pearl Island is known for its warm, crystal-clear waters, stunning natural beauty, white-sand beaches, and its iconic Lighthouse!

Shopping and Food

For more traditional and authentic local goods, try the Straw Market in Bay Street – reputed to be one of the largest in the world – and haggle with the stall-holders for their handmade baskets, hats, jewelry, and wood carvings.

Conch fritters, grouper fingers, peas 'n' rice, boiled fish, johnnycake plus guava duff are just a few of the tasty dishes, all of which go "just right" with a tropical drink in your hand.

The local currency is the Bahamian dollar (B$) The Bahamian dollar is on a par with the US dollar, and both currencies are accepted throughout the country. Always make sure you keep an eye on your belongings as it's hard to spot pickpockets in large crowds.

While Bahamian stores are permitted to open on Sunday, almost none does, making Sunday a very quiet day, at least for commerce. Otherwise, shopping is best in the morning when the crowds are few and the temperature mild.

Everything cruise passengers must know about the cruise terminal in the port of Nassau: what's at the pier and the Festival Place terminal, how to get to town, map, all essential services, and amenities.

The harbor of Nassau is quite impressive and sailing in an interesting spectacle. Located on the north shore of the island of New Providence, right by the capital, its piers extend north and ships will be docked very close to Paradise Island.

The Piers and The Terminal

There are three long piers parallel to the shore with docking spots for up to 8 cruise ships (depending on the size). As shown on the map below, even the farthest docking spot is very close to downtown Nassau. However, if the cruise ship passenger has any sort of walking difficulties, the port provides shuttles that will take you to the Terminal Building - aka Festival Place.

Nassau City / Harbor Map

The distance between the docking spots at the piers and the terminal varies between 50 and 300 meters. Besides the shuttle buses, you will not find any other services at the any of the piers. You will see a number of phone booths along the way but all of these have been out of service for some time - at least since September 2015. However, you will find most services and amenities at the Terminal or just outside. Be Aware: the cruise ship passenger is required to have both the ship card and one photo ID to re-enter the pier.

The Cruise Ship Terminal

Officially named 'Prince George Wharf', the cruise ship terminal in Nassau is really known as Festival Place and has been under constant renovation works for some time.

Many services can be found just outside the building although some are still inside the terminal. In or just outside the Festival Place the cruise ship passenger will find a tourist information desk with good maps and guides, and very courteous staff willing to provide all the necessary information about taxis, ferry boats or walking tours.

The cruise traveler will also find a desk where scooters and cars can be rented and sightseeing tours can be booked. On the left-hand corner, there is a post office and pay phones.

Festival Place Terminal - Nassau

Most of the gift shops are in the building under renovation. Cruise travelers have been waiting for these endless renovation works to be finished and, hopefully, souvenir stores and also a food court will return to where these once were. In the meantime, you will find most of these just outside the terminal. As you approach the terminal from the piers, and also as you walk outside the building, be prepared to be overwhelmed with offers of taxi rides and tour guides leaping at you from locals standing next to the entrance/exit doors.

The good news is that once outside the gated area of the terminal no one else will be pestering you any longer. Still inside the gated area, right in front of the terminal building cruise passengers will find the parking area for taxis. There are two exit gates from here - one on the right-hand side (West) and another one of the left side (East).

Walking to Downtown Nassau

Downtown Nassau is just outside the gated area of the Terminal and regardless of the exit gate the cruise ship passenger will come into a busy street - Woodes Rodgers Walk - which many a first time cruise may think is the main street of Nassau. However, the main street is, in fact, parallel to this nice and attractive 'walk' along the harbor where you will find the Ferry Boats to Paradise Island, a few shops, bars, restaurants, and grills.

The eastern gate (on the left) is the Editor's favorite. This gate has fewer people, the area outside is quieter and leads straight into Rawson Square (and Parliament Square), with Via Café on a corner to enjoy a proper Italian espresso or cappuccino. The main street - Bay Street - will be the first you will come across on your right, no more than 50 yards from the Terminal gate. Be Aware: the continuation of Bay Street to the left (East) of Parliament Square has a couple of shops (Gucci and Bacardi) but not much more - don't be mislead in thinking that this is the heart of Nassau when, in fact, most attractions will be found on the West side of Nassau.

If you’re visiting Nassau on a cruise, you’re in luck! Nassau gets some mixed reviews. However, it is a beautiful and fun cruise port of call with many great things to do.

Nassau is the largest city and the capital of the Bahamas. In fact, Nassau is one of the most popular cruise ports, attracting over 3.7 million cruise passengers annually.

Nassau, Bahamas, is home to beautiful beaches, rich historical sites, and, of course, the Atlantis resort.

Cruise ships dock in Prince George Wharf, which is conveniently located near the downtown district and Bay Street. Cruisers can do a lot of sightseeing by foot, which is why Nassau is such a popular destination.

There are so many great things to do when you are visiting Nassau, from beautiful beaches near the cruise port to island tours and all-inclusive resorts. Recently we visited Nassau by cruise and had an amazing day!

In this post, I share everything you need to know about Nassau, Bahamas, and the best things to do in Nassau cruise port.

Nassau Cruise Port

Cruise ships arriving in Nassau, Bahamas, will dock at the Prince George Wharf. The cruise port is conveniently close to Bay Street and the downtown district. There are many shops, restaurants, and activities within walking distance of the cruise port.

Passengers who have booked shore excursions through the cruise line will find their tour operators stationed near the dock. Those who have booked their shore excursions privately must meet their guides further down the dock.

The Nassau cruise port can feel quite hectic, as up to 6 cruise ships can dock at a time. It is a good idea to plan something to do in advance, as it will be jam-packed when you leave the cruise port.

To be safe, cruise travelers are best off staying within the busier tourist areas or taking a reputable tour.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Nassau Cruise Port

The official currency for the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar. However, the Bahamian dollar is equivalent to the U.S. dollar, and both are widely accepted.

In Nassau, most businesses and restaurants accept U.S. cash or credit cards. You can also use US money when shopping for souvenirs or with local vendors.

If you want to exchange money, you can onboard your cruise ship. However, the exchange rate from a local bank or ATM will be better.

There are several banks and ATMs located near the cruise port on Parliament Street or in the downtown area.

In the Bahamas, the official language is English. However, some locals may speak Creole or Bahamianese. Overall, nearly everyone speaks and understands English in Nassau.

In the Bahamas, they operate on Eastern Standard Time. Furthermore, the cruise ship time will typically be the same as the time on land.

Nassau, Bahamas, has a tropical climate and experiences sunny and warm temperatures year-round. Nassau can experience higher humidity and tropical storms during the summer months, which is why Winter is typically the best time to visit Nassau, Bahamas.

Getting Around Nassau

The best way to get around Nassau is on foot. The downtown area, Bay Street retail district, and many of Nassau’s historic sites are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier.

One of the great things about going to Nassau is that you can easily visit historical sites, eat at a restaurant, and go shopping on foot. The downtown area is easy to navigate, and it’s quite safe.

If you like to explore cruise ports by foot, then you will enjoy visiting Nassau.

Taxi operators are located around the Prince George Wharf area. In Nassau, the taxis are not metered, so it’s a good idea to negotiate the ride fare before entering the car.

Nassau’s public buses, also known as jitneys, are an economical and convenient alternative to taxis and car rentals. The bus runs from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM, costing $1.50 per person for a one-way ride.

There is a bus stop conveniently located near the cruise port, and it stops at popular locations like downtown Nassau and Cable Beach.

Car and Scooter Rental:

For those interested in exploring Nassau on their own, you can do so by renting a car or scooter. There are car and scooter rentals available through Trip Advisor.

However, this is a potential cruise port mistake . If you’ve never driven in the Bahamas, be aware that the rules of the road can differ from the United States.

Most cruise travelers choose to take a taxi or walk in Nassau to avoid the risk of an accident.

Best Things to Do in Nassau Cruise Port

Nassau offers a variety of exciting attractions, activities, and historical sites for visitors. Here are the best things to do while you’re in Nassau:

Best Public Beaches in Nassau

There are some free public beaches in Nassau. If you’re trying to save money on excursions during your cruise , these free beaches are the most popular and recommended.

1. Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is the closest public beach to the cruise ship port. This free Nassau beach is a good option for cruisers who want to stay within walking distance of the cruise ship.

The local beach is a about a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise port, or you can take a taxi.

At Junkanoo Beach, you can access restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. There are also local vendors who offer chair rentals.

If you get hungry or thirsty, there are various restaurants and bars nearby.

2. Cable Beach

Cable Beach is often called “Nassau’s best beach”, as it is 2.5 miles long and has white sand and crystal clear waters. This beach is lined with famous resorts, including Baha Mar and Sandals Royal Bahamian.

It can take 25-30 minutes to get to Cable Beach by taxi. A cheaper alternative is taking the No. 10 bus, which costs $1.50 per person.

At Cable Beach, you can do watersports, snorkel, and relax under the sun!

3. Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach is a public beach which is located on the north side of Paradise Island. You can get to Cabbage Beach by taking a short water taxi ride to Paradise Island ($10 round-trip) or walking for around 20 minutes.

At Cabbage Beach, you will find crystal-clear water and soft sand. Local vendors offer on-site chair and umbrella rentals.

At times, the water can get quite rough at Cabbage Beach. However, you will be right next to Atlantis, which makes for some amazing photos!

4. Saunders Beach

Saunder Beach is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the cruise part. It is known to be one of the quieter beaches in Nassau, making it the ideal choice for families. At Saunders Beach, you can access restroom facilities and a playground.

Be sure to bring towels, as there are no vendors at Saunders Beach.

5. Love Beach

If you’re looking for a free beach with stunning water, check out Love Beach. Love Beach is located a bit further than Cable Beach, and many people say it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas.

At Love Beach, there will be chair rentals and the Nirvana Beach Bar, a fan favorite among cruisers!

6. Jaws Beach

Jaws Beach is the furthest beach from the cruise port. However, it was the filming location for the movie Jaws III!

Whether you’re a movie fan or you enjoy snorkeling, this beach is definitely worth checking out. There are Hollywood memorabilia and sculptures located underwater, which is super fun.

If you get tired of the beach, you can walk to Clifton Heritage Park and enjoy a picnic lunch there.

Best Island Beach Escapes in Nassau

These island beach escapes are excursions that can typically be purchased through the cruise line. This makes for a hassle-free experience as you won’t have to worry about transportation and planning.

In most cases, you will meet your shore excursion guide at a designated sport before being guided to a bus or boat. From there, you can enjoy your day before returning to the cruise port.

7. Pearl Island

Pearl Island allows guests to relax on the beach, explore the island’s walking trails, explore a lighthouse, and enjoy a traditional Bahamian lunch. Pearl Island is on the pricey side. However, there is a lot included in the price.

Through Carnival Cruise Line, Pearl Island costs $95 for adults and $75 for children. This includes transportation, a lounge chair, a signature cocktail, lunch, and watersports like kayaks, paddleboards, water trampolines, and water mats.

The boat ride to Pearl Island takes roughly 30 minutes, and the excursion lasts approximately 5 hours. At Pearl Island, you will have access to bathroom facilities, changing rooms, and showers.

If you’re interested, VIP cabanas are available at an additional cost.

8. Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is a small island located off the coast of Nassau. Typically, a Blue Lagoon island excursion combines the beach with other activities like sea lion encounters, dolphin encounters, or segway tours. If you want to spend the day at the beach, you can also do that.

Depending on the shore excursion and what cruise line you are sailing with, day passes range from $90 to $200 per adult.

9. Balmoral Island

If you’re looking for a great way to spend your day in Nassau, check out Balmoral Island. Unlike the other islands, Balmoral Island has two freshwater pools available to guests who want a break from the ocean.

The downside to going to Balmoral Island is that your food, drinks, and water sports are not included. If you enjoy doing water sports, it may be a better value for you to try one of the other excursions!

10. Royal Beach Club

Royal Caribbean cruise line is opening the Royal Beach Club in 2025. This beach club be available exclusively to guests onboard Royal Caribbean cruises.

This 17-acre resort is located on Paradise Island, a short water taxi away from the cruise port. At the Royal Beach Club, there will be four pristine beaches for guests to enjoy (Tranquility Beach, Sapphire Beach, Hideaway Beach, and Harbor Beach).

There will also be various restaurants, bars, and pools at the Royal Beach Club. Once the beach is open, it will be the ultimate beach escape for families.

Best Resorts in Nassau (Day Passes)

Resort day passes give cruise ship passengers access to hotel and resort amenities. Depending on the resort, you may find all-inclusive passes.

The resorts typically feature access to the beach, private pools, restaurants, and bars. These day passes can be purchased individually through the hotel or resort.

11. Atlantis Paradise Island

Nassau is one of the main attractions in Nassau, Bahamas, but it is undoubtedly a pricey way to spend your day. A day pass to the Atlantis Aqua Adventure Water Park starts at $210 for adults and $150 for children if you purchase it through the Carnival Cruise Line.

A pass to Atlantis Adventure Water Park includes access to 141 acres of pools, water rides, Atlantis beaches, The Dig, Marina Village, and casino. Food and drinks may or may not be included depending on the conditions of your ticket.

Another option is to purchase the day pass directly through the Atlantis website. The admission price varies on what day you are going, and there is a good chance that you won’t save any money this way. Furthermore, you will be responsible for your transportation.

Atlantis offers additional activities that cruise passengers can do. However, they do cost extra.

Atlantis offers various dolphin experiences, sea lion experiences, stingray experiences, and more. These experiences range in price, but they generally cost $335 for adults and $285 for kids.

You can access certain areas of the Atlantis resort without paying any admission fee. The casino, indoor retail, specific dining venues, and Marina Village are available to the public.

Remember, if you are going to Atlantis without the cruise line, you are responsible for returning to the cruise ship on time. Keep an eye on your watch so you don’t get left behind in Nassau!

12. Margaritaville Resort & Waterpark

Margaritaville Resort & Water Park is a new resort that opened in 2021. This resort features two private beaches, two swimming pools, a lazy river, water slides, and a poolside bar.

The great thing about the Margaritaville Resort is that it’s only a 15-minute walk from the cruise port. Since Margaritaville is a short walk from the cruise port, you can spend the whole day there, and you won’t have to worry about finding a taxi back.

It costs $110 for adults and 55 for children to enter the Margaritaville Resort. This will give you access to all onsite activities, amenities, and Wi-Fi. At Margaritaville, you must pay for the food and beverages.

When we were in Nassau, we spent the day at Margaritaville, and it was awesome! The resort is clean, modern, and the staff is very friendly.

Whether you’re traveling as a family, as a couple, or with friends, you will have a good time at the Margaritaville resort.

13. Baha Mar

Baha Mar is a luxury resort that offers a limited number of day passes. When you visit Baha Mar, you will have access to a 15-acre water park, 24 water slides, a lazy river, an infinity pool, a wave pool, a kids pool, a FlowRide surf simulator, an outdoor casino, and the beach.

Right now, a day pass costs $160 for adults, $65 for guests under 48-inches, and free for guests under two.

14. Warwick Paradise Island

Warwick Paradise Island Bahamas is a resort for guests 16 and up. At Warwick, you will find a small beach and a massive pool with lounge chairs.

A day pass to Warwick Paradise Island costs $130 to $160, depending on if you want the standard or deluxe day package. When you’re a Warwick, your food and drinks are included, which is a huge bonus!

15. Riu Palace

RIU Palace is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort located on Paradise Island near Atlantis. When you’re at Riu Palace, you will have access to a swim-up bar, two swimming pools, and a dedicated beach area on Cabbage Beach.

A day pass for RIU Palace starts at $129 per person. This includes premium cocktails and a poolside “jerk” barbeque station.

When you spend the day at Riu Palace, you must pay for transportation from the cruise ship pier. You will also have to pay $10 for Wi-Fi if you want to stay connected, and there is an additional charge for spa treatments.

16. Breezes Resort & Spa

Breezes Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive that costs $125 for the day. This includes access to the beach, pools, swim-up bar, jacuzzi, land activities, water sports, and your meals and alcoholic beverages.

The resort is located on cable, which is a 15-20 minute drive from the cruise terminal.

Exploring Nassau Bahamas

17. the straw market.

The Straw Market is a large market with handmade Bahamian straw products like purses, bags, and hats. You can also find factory-made souvenirs like shirts, bracelets, and magnets. Before you make any purchases, be sure to negotiate on the price!

The good thing about the straw market is that it’s extremely close to the Prince George Wharf cruise port. If you want to get off the ship and shop for souvenirs, the Straw Market is only a 6-minute walk from the port.

18. The Queen’s Staircase

The Queens Staircase is named after the late Queen Victoria. This historic attraction is a 66-step staircase that was carved out of limestone in 1793.

This staircase provides a direct route from downtown Nassau to For Fincastle. Furthermore, there is no charge to go up the historic staircase.

19. Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle is a historic fort that was built back in 1793 to protect Nassau from pirates. At Fort Fincastle, you will gain access to some incredible views of the cruise port.

When you visit Fort Fincastle, you will be near the Queen’s Staircase and the Pirates of Nassau Museum. If you’re exploring Nassau on foot, checking out these three attractions is a great idea!

If you want to enter For Fincastle, the cost of admission is $1 for adults and free for kids under 12.

20. Parliament Square

Parliament Square houses the Bahamas House of Assembly, Supreme Court, and Senate Building. This is a great spot for pictures as the colonial buildings are in a pink pastel color, and they look very tropical.

You will also see a statue of Queen Victoria that was built in the early 1900s.

If you’re looking to spend your afternoon in Downtown Nassau, and you want to visit museums then you’re in luck. Nassau has several museums that are within walking distance from the cruise port.

21. Pirates of Nassau Museum

If you’re traveling with kids, check out the Pirates of Nassau Museum. This is an interesting museum to learn about the history of Nassau and piracy between 1690 to 1720.

One of the cool features of the Pirates of Nassau Museum is that they have a replica pirate ship. This is a major hit among kids as they can walk on it.

Admission to the Pirates of Nassau Museum is $14 for adults and $7 for kids under 17.

22. Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation

The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation is smaller. Here, you will learn about Pompey, a slave who led a rebellion in 1830 on the island of Exuma.

The museum is located at the Historic Vendue House. This building was built around 1769 and functioned as a marketplace until the late 1800’s. In 1992, it became a museum that was open to the public.

If you want to visit this museum, it is only a 7-minute walk from the cruise port. It’s also located right next to the Straw Market.

23. National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is the perfect museum for art enthusiasts. This museum features art from the locals and highlights Bahamian history and culture.

It costs $10 for adults, and it is free for children to visit the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Furthermore, the art gallery is a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, and it is nearby several other attractions.

24. Heritage Museum of the Bahamas

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas is a smaller museum with relics dating back to prehistoric times. At this museum, you will see tools used during slavery, items from a Bahamian grocery store in 1900, and a meteorite slice.

When you visit the Heritage Museum of the Bahamas, you will have the choice of doing a self-guided tour or purchasing an audio guide for around $20. The Heritage Museum is a 12-minute walk from the cruise port, and it is near the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas.

25. Educulture Junkanoo Museaum

Junkanoo is a street festival in the Bahamas that happens on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day every year. This cultural celebration includes dancing, spirituality, and listening to music.

The Educulture Junkanoo Museum is a great place to learn about the history of Junkanoo and to see the costumes that are worn during this festival. This museum is the brainchild of Arlene Nash Ferguson, who has been on the National Junkanoo Committee for over 24 years.

Nassau: How to Make the Most of 8 Hours in Port on a Cruise

If you’re taking a cruise from anywhere to The Bahamas, there is a good chance that it will make a stop in Nassau. The capital of the country, Nassau has long been known as a destination for sun-seeking tourists, a historical hotspot, and a prominent player in many James Bond movies.

These days, it’s among the busiest cruise destinations on the planet with literally millions of passengers visiting each year. So if you have an upcoming stop in Nassau, then know you aren’t alone.

To help you make the most of your time in port, we’ve put together tons of information on what to expect, the lay of the land, and more to ensure you have a great stay in this tropical stop.

Getting to Know Nassau

Sitting just 180 miles from Miami, Nassau is a city sitting on the eastern half of a larger island called New Providence. This island is roughly 18 miles wide by 7 miles, and home to about 300,000 residents. That figure can grow by 20,000 or more people when ships call on the island.

Across a narrow channel from New Providence sits Paradise Island, which is easily recognizable by the large Atlantis resort. This spot is also where the well-heeled have houses, including a number of famous celebrities.

Cruise ships dock in downtown Nassau. When in port — especially when multiple ships are docked — it’s a busy and bustling area with a lot of activity. So while The Bahamas is known for its laid-back vibe and atmosphere, don’t be surprised if it seems anything but that when you arrive.

In this part of the world, it stays pleasantly warm year-round, even compared to spots like Miami or Fort Lauderdale, which can get cooler in the winter. Winter highs average around 80 degrees while summer temperatures regularly reach the low 90s. As you might guess, humidity gets heavy, especially in the summers when it can rain considerably with passing afternoon showers. Winter is noticeably drier.

As you might guess with so many visitors, Nassau has built a major industry around tourism with everything from small shops selling souvenirs to large mega-resorts like Atlantis and Baha Mar that cater to the well-to-do.

Port Area for Passengers

Recently Nassau completely renovated the port area to the tune of several hundreds of millions of dollars. Not only are the piers and walkways completely renovated, but there was also a large welcome area constructed.

Now, anything a cruise passenger might want to start their day is here. There are small shops selling everything from souvenirs to snacks to shore excursions. There is also a museum of Bahamian culture, a taxi stand, restrooms, and an amphitheater.

Outside the port gates are a number of spots that cater to cruisers, all within a short walk from the ships. Cross Woodes Rodgers Walk (the street running alongside the port) and you’ll find souvenirs, restaurants, all sorts of shops selling everything from jewelry to cigars to restaurants, and much more. This includes the famous Straw Market, a spot with lots of vendors selling anything you can imagine with “Bahamas” written on it.

To be sure, the port area is definitely touristy. If shops and bars interest you, then by all means take it all in. If not, then head away from the ships on your own or on an excursion and you’ll see things calm down quickly.

Getting Around Nassau From the Port

What’s the best way to get around Nassau? If you have an excursion booked, then you don’t have to worry about transportation — it will be taken care of with the tour.

If not, then you have a few options. First, Nassau is walkable assuming you are in decent shape . It definitely does not have the even surfaces and accessible sidewalks you might be used to back home. If you have mobility issues, it’s better to take a taxi. Still, if you want to simply take a walking tour, there are a number things to see and do around the city within walking distance.

Taxis are also readily available . In fact, you’ll find a taxi stand in the port area that can get you set up. Cabs can take you anywhere you want to go, including the popular Paradise Island. If you decide to travel to a place that’s a bit out of the way, keep in mind that it might be harder to find a taxi back.

Want a real adventure? If you’re headed across the channel to Paradise Island or Atlantis, then there is a ferry you can ride for $7 each way . It’s rustic and open-air, with a guide that will point out some sights along the way. The ride takes about 10-15 minutes but will also give you some great views of the ship.

Finally, one option is to rent a vehicle . Leave the port and you’ll find a number of vendors offering scooters or golf carts for rent. To be honest, we can’t share many details about this option as riding through an unfamiliar place in traffic never appealed to us. If you do rent, be sure to remember that they drive on the left side of the street in The Bahamas.

How to Make the Most of a Port Stop

When you only have a limited amount of time in a port like Nassau during your cruise, the big question is how do you make the most of it. Having visited several times, our advice is to do one of the following during your day:

Book a Shore Excursion: We think Nassau is one of the best ports to book a shore excursion during your visit. The port can be a bit hectic and frankly, there isn’t a lot to do right at the port unless you like souvenir shopping and touristy shops/bars.

With excursions you can get out of the city a little bit, and it’s much easier than planning yourself. Much of what you can do revolves around hitting the beaches in the area, usually with a boat ride over to the spot and lunch. There are beach days, snorkeling tours, swimming with pigs, and more.

You can also opt for more or less adventure if you want. Cruise lines offer excursions on jet boats and scuba diving, along with cooking classes and walking tours.

Check with your cruise line for the specific excursions available. But with limited time in port and the fact that many of the more “beachy” sites are some distance from the port, these tours make a lot of sense.

Explore Downtown: Don’t want to spend the money for an excursion? There are still things to do and see on your own. Since the cruise port is at the foot of downtown, you can walk off the ship and reach some neat spots to explore all within walking distance.

Junkanoo Beach: The closest beach to the cruise port is Junkanoo Beach , sitting just west of where the ships dock. One half is fairly busy with beach bars and loungers while the other half is more relaxed with just a few shady trees. You also have a great view of the ships from here.

Queen’s Staircase: A famous landmark in Nassau, this staircase was carved out of rock in the 1700s by slave labor. Today, it’s a popular (and free) tourist spot to visit. The carve-out created essentially a canyon in the middle of Nassau with a canopy of trees growing over the top.

National Art Gallery of The Bahamas: Open Tuesday through Sunday, the National Art Gallery is a spot that many tourists don’t know about but is worth a stop. Housed in an 1860s restored home, the manicured grounds feature outside sculptures with galleries indoors. Every turn in this spot uncovers something neat to see.

Paradise Island: One of the most visited areas has to be Paradise Island. This is the small island across the channel from Nassau and home to the Atlantis mega resort. You can get there by taxi or a ferry ride. ( For details on where to catch the ferry, see our article here .)

Once on the island, you can head to Atlantis. It’s a resort/hotel with a waterpark, casino, restaurants, shops, and more. Consider it like a Las Vegas hotel in the middle of The Bahamas. Many people visit just to see the sights or play a little in the casino. Just know that some areas are for guests only. As well, if you want to visit the waterpark, it comes with a hefty price tag (tickets can be booked directly before you arrive or often through your cruise line’s shore excursion desk).

Tips/Things to Know About Visiting on a Cruise

We’ve mentioned a number of these tips and things you should know but to make them clear, here are a few things to keep in mind during your day in Nassau.

The Closest Beach is Junkanoo Beach If you want a beach (and don’t want to book an excursion) then the closest one is Junkanoo Beach, just about a half-mile away. To get there, just hang a right outside the cruise port and keep walking around a couple of mega hotels. It sits on the other side of the Margaritaville resort.

Excursions Are Ideal in Nassau Yes, you can definitely head out on your own and have fun, but Nassau is one spot where we’d recommend an excursion. The reason is that many of the most attractive things to do involve getting out of the port area and often to more hidden away spots that otherwise aren’t easily accessible for tourists. An excursion makes it simple to leave the ship, have fun you couldn’t do otherwise, and then get back to the ship.

The Nicest Beach Is Cabbage Beach If you’re headed out on an excursion to a beach, you can rest assured you’ll visit somewhere nice. If you’re trying to plan a beach day on your own, then we’d suggest Cabbage Beach. It’s a wide spot that stretches for more than a mile, has golden sand and crystal clear water. It can get crowded with lots of tourists and vendors, but if you want fewer people, then just walk down the beach some to find your own spot.

Be Careful With Shady Jet Ski Rentals If you hit Cabbage Beach, you might be asked about jet ski rentals from young men walking up and down the sand. We’d suggest being careful and avoiding these as they aren’t always regulated. We’ve personally been on the beach when a woman who rented a ride accused the vendor of sexual assault. If you want to ride a jet ski, then look for a tour through the cruise line shore excursion desk. These companies have been vetted.

You Can Walk, But Be Prepared for a Harder Time Want to take a walking tour of Nassau? Absolutely you can, and there are a number of things to see close by. Just be prepared that it won’t be like back home. Sidewalks aren’t always smooth (if they exist at all), nor are walk signals at most intersections. As well, keep in mind that cars drive on the left here, so it will come from the opposite side when you cross streets.

Take the Ferry to Paradise Island If you want fast, then take a cab to Paradise Island. There is a taxi stand in the port area where you can get one. But it’s more fun (and rustic) to pay the $7 per person and grab a spot on the open-air ferry that takes you from the cruise dock. It’s a 10-15 minute ride over on the water. It will drop you off a ways from Cabbage Beach and Atlantis, so there will be a walk versus being dropped off at your destination with a cab.

You Won’t Be Alone in Port We’ve mentioned that Nassau is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. There can be up to six ships a day docking, meaning literally tens of thousands of cruise passengers in port. In other words, no matter when you visit, you should expect to have other ships visiting with you and decent crowds in the port area.

Packing for a Bahamas cruise? Toss your swimsuits and tropical attire into your suitcase, and start channeling those relaxing island vibes.

Even in winter, the coolest part of the year, temperatures in the Bahamas only drop to the low 70s on average, making comfortable and breathable clothing crucial. But to do this cruise destination right, you're also going to want to explore beaches and historical sites, hike stunning terrain, engage in water sports and even swim with wild pigs, all of which require the correct gear and outfits.

We know you don't want to come home with a sunburn or sit around in wet clothing during your vacation. Learn what to pack for a Bahamas cruise so you're prepared for fun in the sun.

What to pack for a Bahamas cruise

The weather doesn't vary much among the Bahamian islands, which makes packing easy for a cruise to multiple Bahamian ports. Daily year-round temperatures average between 77 and 90 degrees.

The weather doesn't change drastically throughout the day, as it might on an Alaska cruise , but mornings can be breezy in the Bahamas. Pack an extra layer, such as a lightweight cotton sweater or jean jacket, to shed by lunch. Just make sure it's easy to bunch up into your bag or purse once the sun starts baking.

Thin and breathable clothing

Rain showers in the Bahamas are short and over before you know it. But, since you're living out of a suitcase, you want clothing that dries quickly. Choose polyester, cotton and linen fabrics for your cruise wardrobe. Tempting as it might be to pack your favorite heavy cardigan to cozy up in, don't. It will take a long time to dry, and sitting in wet wool can be miserable.

When in doubt, choose thin, lightweight and loose-fitting clothing versus tight and constricting outfits. Your body will appreciate clothing not sticking to you as you're hiking up the 66 steep limestone steps of the Queen's Staircase in Nassau or exploring Lucayan National Park, enduring oppressive humidity. Pack shirts or dresses you can throw over a swimsuit, too, if a day in port means rolling into town for lunch after the beach.

Sturdy footwear

Not all Bahamian sidewalks or roads are paved like in the U.S. Save your flip-flops for the beach and cute-but-uncomfortable shoes for the ship.

For touring, choose sturdy shoes, such as Keen, Chaco or Teva sandals — all of which are waterproof and comfy, whether on land or in the water. Pack footwear you don't mind getting a little dirty. In other words, those brand-new white sneakers you packed should probably be resigned to "deck shoes" and worn only on the ship.

Eveningwear

Most cruise lines will have one or two formal or "evening chic" nights during which dressing to the nines is encouraged, although not required.

Instead of a velvet gown or dark suit, the trend for a warm-weather sailing is lighter colors. For men, this might mean a tan suit or tan sport coat over slacks (even better if it's linen, which breathes more easily). Women should skip casual sundresses for something more elegant while honoring a color palette influenced by the seaside surroundings. (That said, little black dresses are never not in fashion on board.)

Accessories and gear

If you don't take a lot of photos, did the cruise even happen? While a smartphone camera is fine, so are cameras you can pack into a dry bag and take on shore excursions. Just don't forget to bring a portable charger or power bank when you know you're going to burn through your phone's battery. It's hard to find an outlet for a charging cable at the beach.

The sun shines brightly in the Bahamas, which is precisely why 7.25 million tourists flock there each year. Pack sunscreen in your day pack; apply it liberally and often. It's especially easy to be burned when you spend all day in the sun on a cruise line's private island. Use waterproof sunblock for the days you're in the water.

Take the stress out of packing

You're going to sweat through your clothes, so anticipate changing outfits multiple times each day. Keep in mind that your ship might have a self-serve laundry room or offer send-out laundry services . That means you can pack less with plans to wear the same outfit more than once.

Bahamian ports are filled with shops selling clothing, medicine and toiletries. There are few things you might have left at home that you cannot find in Nassau or Freeport; your cruise ship will also sell a limited range of sundries. If your ship is only visiting cruise line-operated islands, however, you might want to bring extra toiletries and medications, just in case.

Here is a handy checklist to use while packing for your Bahamas cruise.

• A selection of lightweight T-shirts, tank tops or other casual shirts (like those made with quick-drying materials) to wear during the day
• Two or three pairs of shorts, leggings or skirts to wear during the day
• A swimsuit or swim trunks, with an extra to spare while the other is drying (since you'll be spending lots of time in the ship's pool and on the country's beaches)
• A rash guard or shirt that can get wet so your back doesn't burn while snorkeling or playing in the surf
• A cover-up (consider a stylish one for those beachside selfies)
• A lightweight waterproof jacket or raincoat
• A thin fleece jacket or sweater for chilly mornings (and plane rides)
• A backpack or large beach bag to take into port or on the ship's pool deck
• Two pairs of slacks or skirts (or dresses) or two button-down shirts and a suit coat for evening dining on the ship
• A lightweight cardigan, scarf or sweater for air-conditioned restaurants on the ship
• A pair or two of good walking shoes that breathe, such as sandals with ankle straps or an ankle-cut hiking, walking or running shoe
• A pair of fancy shoes for evening dinners on the ship
• Sun protection: sunglasses, a baseball hat or floppy straw hat, and sunscreen (possibly an aloe-based gel or cream, too, to soothe the inevitable burn)
• An umbrella
• A reusable water bottle (to stay hydrated while in port and on the ship)
• Gym clothes (in case you get the itch to work off all those calories in the ship's gym or go for a run in port)
• Toiletries and prescriptions (packed in your carry-on in case luggage is delayed or lost)
• Underwear, pajamas and socks
• Your mobile phone or camera (and a charger so you don't miss an amazing shot)
• A dry bag or Ziploc bags to protect your phone, camera and wallet during shore excursions on the water or at the beach
• Entertainment for the beach, on board and on the plane (if you're flying to your embarkation port), such as an e-reader or book, a deck of cards, portable video games, a tablet, a sketchpad, an adult coloring book or crossword puzzles
• Easy-to-pack kids beach toys, such as inflatable beach balls, arm floaties, frisbees and collapsible pails with shovels

Bottom line

Other than on formal night (which, again, is optional), casual attire is the preferred choice on warm-weather sailings. So go ahead and pack that Hawaiian shirt or favorite outfits in tropical colors. Then, hop on board and make some fabulous memories in both comfort and style.
