Carnival Cruise Line in Alaska: Guide & what you need to know

Carnival Luminosa in Skagway, Alaska

Carnival Cruise Line is the largest cruise line in the world, with an impressive 26 ships sailing by the end of 2023. Although they are known for their fun Caribbean itineraries, Carnival has numerous sailings to Alaska with a good selection of ports of call and excursions.

Carnival has four Spirit-class ships, which were built specifically for all-weather sailing and are well suited to the cooler climate of this northern region. No matter which Carnival ship you pick, expect the cruise line’s signature attractions and venues, including a number of family-friendly activities with their usual focus on fun.

With 19 different itineraries to the Last Frontier, Carnival gives guests the option to choose from a variety of scenic itineraries that voyage to top-rated Alaska ports as well as spectacular scenic cruising of glacial landscapes.

Since there are quite a few different options for a Carnival cruise to the Land of the Midnight Sun, here is a breakdown of what you need to know when picking Carnival for an unforgettable Alaska cruise vacation .

Carnival's sailings to Alaska

Carnival Alaska

Carnival has four ships sailing to Alaska, including Carnival Miracle, Carnival Legend, Carnival Luminosa, and Carnival Spirit, spread across varied itineraries over the next couple of years.

Embarkation ports include major cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco in California, as well as Seattle, which provides many convenient flight options. As all their cruises start in the United States, each sailing has one stop in Canada, in ports such as picturesque Victoria, British Colombia.

Many of Canival’s offerings focus on 7-day cruises out of Seattle, as well as longer ones, as much as 14 days. They do not offer one-way cruises, starting or finishing in Alaska, and don’t have add-on land tours, unlike other cruise lines like Princes Cruises. However, they do have a wide range of ports as well as scenic cruising of glaciers and fjords .

Alaska itineraries

Glacier Bay

Many of the Carnival’s cruises sail the calmer waters of the Inside Passage, visiting ports such as Skagway , Juneau , Ketchikan , Icy Strait Point , Haines, and Sitka . They also visit Victoria and Prince Rupert in Canada. Although Victoria is quite common on Alaska sailings, Carnival has added Prince Rupert, a northern Canadian town known for its natural wildlife, fishing, and rainforest.

In addition to numerous ports of call, Carnival’s Alaska cruises provide lots of scenic cruising to spots such as Tracy Arm Fjord,  Endicott Arm Fjord, and the Hubbard Glacier . There are a few longer cruises that head up to the Hubbard Glacier, Valdez, and Seward .

Among their most unique sailings are 14-day cruises leaving from Seattle or Los Angeles. While most of their cruise itineraries focus on the Inside Passage, these sail further north across the Gulf of Alaska to Prince William Sound, with access to College Fjord and Anchorage .

Alaska excursions

Talkeetna

In keeping with their mission to deliver fun vacations at sea and ashore, Carnival offers a sizeable range of excursions for a variety of activity levels, ages, and interests. In addition to this, many of the ports are well suited to do-it-yourself tours , with plenty of local transportation to attractions.

Highlights of Carnival’s Alaska cruise excursions include:

  • There are plenty of options to see the incredible abundance of wildlife that call Alaska home, including humpback and orca whales , other marine animals, and Alaska’s Big Five — moose, caribou, grizzly bears, wolves, and Dall sheep. You can even try your hand at dog sledding, one of the state’s most iconic modes of transportation.
  • Alaska is known for its fjords and glaciers, and there are many ways to see and explore these wonders of nature, such as seaplane and helicopter tours. There are also many tours along waterways with stunning waterfalls, icebergs, and calving glaciers.
  • There is a wide range of activities, such as canoeing, kayaking , hiking , fishing, water rafting, and biking, to name a few.
  • Ample opportunity to explore Alaska, which is rich in history and heritage, with visits to museums and interactive experiences.
  • Revisit the Gold Rush era by learning about this dynamic time, visiting some historic buildings that still stand today, and even trying your hand at gold panning.
  • Indulge in a true Alaska feast and try some of the state's famous seafood at a local salmon bake or crab feast, and, of course, there are plenty of craft breweries.

Carnival ships sailing to Alaska

Spirit

All of Carnival’s ships sailing to Alaska are part of the cruise line’s Spirit Class, built in the early 2000s. These ships are much smaller than Carnival’s mega-ships of recent times, like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, which are more than twice the size of Spirit Class ships.

These “smaller" ships still welcome around 2,000 passengers, a far more intimate experience by today’s cruise ship standards but large enough to offer amenities and activities that modern cruisers love. One major perk of this class of ships is that they have retractable roofs over the pools that can be closed during cooler weather.

These ships still offer lots of fun entertainment and activities that Carnival is famous for, like waterparks, slides, family venues, adult areas, and much more.

BLue

Carnival Spirit

  • The namesake of this class, Carnival Spirit, was originally built in 2001 but was refurbished in 2019. It has a capacity for 2,124 guests with 930 crew. It was the first in the Spirit class of ships.
  • This ship sails mainly out of Seattle on 7-day cruises, although it has a few longer ones, including a 14-day cruise that ventures to the Gulf of Alaska.

Carnival Legend

  • Carnival Legend was launched in 2002 and last refurbished in 2014 and welcomes 2,124 passengers. This ship was recently switched to Alaska sailings and now sails exclusively out of San Francisco on 10-day cruises, a great option for those in the California region.
  • Similar to other ships in this class, it has a greater number of balcony cabins than the fleet average but also has many inside cabins that are well-priced.

Carnival Miracle

  • The ship was built in 2004 and updated in 2020. It has a guest capacity of 2,124 and a crew of 934, a good ratio for service. It is currently homeporting in San Francisco and Los Angeles for the 2024 Alaska cruise season.
  • Of the Carnival fleet, Carnival Miracle offers a higher percentage of cabins with ocean views, with 64 percent of the cabins having a balcony (fleet average of 50%). A balcony view is a great asset for such a scenic tour.

Carnival Luminosa

  • Built in 2009, Carnival Luminosa moved over from Costa Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival Corporation, that sails out of Italy. It joined Carnival in 2022, at which time it was refurbished. It is similar in design to the other Spirit-class ships, although it is about 5% bigger in gross tonnage, welcoming 2,260 guests onboard with 926 crew. It sails out of Seattle, mostly on 7-day cruises of the Inside Passage region of Alaska.

Carnival's onboard offering

Carnival waterpark

Carnival celebrates its fleet as “The World’s Most Popular Cruise Line,” carrying over a million passengers each year. Their focus is on fun and offering customers great value. They have some of the most competitive prices in the market and lots of choices for cruisers on every budget. Their “fun” ships possess plenty of amenities and activities for adults sailing on their own or for families and multigenerational trips. Here’s what to expect on a Carnival ship:

  • A diverse selection of inclusive dining options like Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, Seaday Brunch, and Pizza Pirate, along with the standard buffet and main dining room fare.
  • Specialty dining venues such as sushi, steakhouse, and Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast .
  • Extensive entertainment options such as live musical productions, comedy shows, and theme parties, including favorites like  Lip Sync Battle
  • Family activities - waterparks, Twister water slides, arcades, Build-A-Bear Workshop, parades, and much more
  • Adult activities include a variety of bars, lounges, nightclubs, spas, adult-only retreats, live entertainment, karaoke, Lip Sync Battle, Comedy Club, Comedy Club Deck/ theme parties, and casinos.
  • Lots of additional onboard activities like basketball, volleyball, and mini-golf, numerous pools and hot tubs
  • Variety of cabin categories with lots of balcony options for scenic viewing
  • Complimentary kids clubs for kids ages 2-17, with a dedicated kids area.

What to know when picking a Carnival cruise to Alaska

Excursion

Carnival ships sailing to Alaska were designed for all-weather conditions, adding to the comfort of the guests. These smaller ships still have a good variety of onboard venues and dining options, which might be perfect for families or cruisers who love the fun vibe.  There are a couple of important points to consider when considering a Carnival cruise vacation to Alaska, as they differ from other cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Carnival is famous for its great prices, and their cruise fare includes basic drinks like non-bottled water, lemonade, coffee, and tea, a number of complimentary dining venues, and much of the entertainment. They do not have all-inclusive packages, but rather, drinks and wi-fi are separate. So, while the cruise fares have great advertised prices, add-ons should be considered when budgeting a cruise to Alaska.

Eagles

They have a good number of itineraries sailing the Inside Passage, but they don’t offer one-way cruises with land tours. However, these Inside Passage cruises can be a great introduction to Alaska cruising with a balance of fun things to do onboard in renovated ships.

Ships like Carnival Miracle have more balconies than the fleet average, a plus for Alaska cruises. The cruise lines do not have the same suite selection that other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are known for in their vast fleets.

Carnival's mid-sized cruise ships provide a good balance of activities to suit both kids and adults, although some are at an additional cost, such as the Seuss-themed brunch and Deal or No Deal game show. With little significant differences between the ships (beyond age), itineraries and prices may be the bigger driver when booking the ultimate Alaska cruise vacation.

Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The vessel carries 2,918 guests at double occupancy, 3,373 guests at maximum occupancy and 1,320 crew members. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across  Alaska, Hawaii, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

Alaska Cruises from San Francisco

Convenient access to famous treasures on a roundtrip 11-day alaska cruise from san francisco.

Sail under the Golden Gate Bridge and into a world of adventure as you head north on an Alaska cruise from San Francisco. Journey through beautiful waterways and get a front row seat to the world’s most breathtaking glaciers. Visit charming ports that invite you to learn about the region’s rich history and culture. Or relax at sea aboard your Inside Passage cruise from San Francisco.

Itinerary Ports

When you cruise to Alaska from San Francisco, encounter unique ports of call that are rich in history, culture and natural beauty.

  • Glacier Viewing
  • Prince Rupert
  • San Francisco
  • Victoria, B.C.

Enjoy one glacier viewing day when you cruise to Alaska from San Francisco. In Glacier Bay National Park, visit Margerie Glacier and admire wildlife like humpback whales and sea lions. While cruising through the 30-mile waterway of Endicott Arm Fjord, get up close to Dawes Glacier and hear it roar with white thunder. Sail past waterfalls and granite canyon walls that disappear into the fjords.

Located between the Chilkat River and the Lynn Canal, Haines is the home of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, where as many as 4,000 bald eagles gather each fall to feast on spawning salmon along the river. As many as 80 have been seen perched in a single tree and more than a hundred may be captured within the frame of a single photograph.

Juneau is unlike any other city in the United States. With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future. Embark on a whale watching tour, or sail past Mendenhall Glacier on an Alaska cruise.

Known for its timber, Ketchikan hosts the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where athletes throw, race and chop their way to victory. Explore one of the world’s oldest collection of totem poles at the Totem Pole Heritage Center, or stroll along Creek Street. As the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan’s waters make for incredible fishing. Cast your rod into a sea of opportunity on a cruise to Alaska.

Tucked in a temperate rainforest, Prince Rupert, B.C. is nicknamed "The City of Rainbows." Once a commerce hub for First Nations people, it developed as a town when it was selected as the western end point for the Grand Turk Pacific Railway. On a cruise to Alaska, take in its history strolling through museums and shops, enjoy a hike in the Butze Rainforest, or see eagles and humpbacks on a wildlife cruise.

It’s not hard to see why San Francisco has captured so many hearts and minds. World-class cuisine, iconic architecture, diverse neighborhoods and history all wait at your fingertips. Ride the ferry to Alcatraz, or tour Sonoma wine country and taste some of the world's best wines on a cruise to Alaska from San Francisco.

Once the gateway to Alaska's Gold Rush, Skagway strikes a dramatic image nestled between the water's edge and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of miners with a ride on a scenic train along the famous White Pass route through coastal mountains. During your Alaska cruise, explore the Yukon's pristine wilderness, pan for gold with professionals or meet sled dog puppies in training.

Valdez is situated in Prince William Sound and serves as the gateway to the interior of Alaska. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland", Valdez is known for its breathtaking panorama of snow-capped mountains and glaciers. It is also well-known for its role in the transportation of crude oil from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System, which ends in Valdez. Explore the charming waterfront area and take in the flavors of Valdez through culinary experiences at restaurants such as the Valdez Brewery and the Fat Mermaid.

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure.

Wrangell is a charming and scenic harbor known for its local fishing industry. It is not as bustling as larger ports in Alaska and maintains its historic charm and offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Explore its historic downtown and learn about the local culture and Native heritage while in Wrangell.

Peltola, Begich, Dahlstrom advance to ranked choice November election in Alaska US House race

Democratic U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola has advanced to November’s ranked choice general election for Alaska’s lone House seat, along with Republicans Nick Begich and Nancy Dahlstrom

JUNEAU, Alaska -- Democratic U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola on Tuesday advanced to November’s ranked choice general election for Alaska’s sole U.S. House seat, along with Republicans Nick Begich and Nancy Dahlstrom.

The three were the most prominent candidates in a field of 12 running for the seat in Alaska’s primary. Under Alaska’s open primary system, voters were asked to pick one candidate, with the top four vote-getters in the race, regardless of party affiliation, advancing to the ranked choice general election.

In early results, Peltola led in the vote count, followed by Begich and then Dahlstrom. It was too early to call who the fourth candidate would be.

Tuesday’s primary helps set the stage for what is expected to be a hotly contested, closely watched race this fall. The GOP is hoping to reclaim the seat that Republican U.S. Rep. Don Young held for 49 years before his death in 2022. Peltola became the first Alaska Native elected to Congress with her wins in special and regular elections that year.

Begich, who ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2022, was running with support from a number of local Republican groups. Dahlstrom, who is Alaska's lieutenant governor, was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and several House leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson.

Begich had said he would withdraw from the race if he finished behind Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom did not make a similar pledge. Both late Tuesday cast themselves as the candidate capable of beating Peltola.

Peltola catapulted to office in 2022 with a campaign that emphasized civility in politics. But in her reelection bid, she has found some of the pitfalls of playing the middle in today's polarized political landscape.

Weeks before the primary, she faced backlash on social media after telling reporters she was “keeping an open mind” about the presidential race and declining to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, who at the time was not yet the official Democratic nominee. Peltola was forced to clarify that she would not, in fact, vote for Trump.

She further angered some supporters when she voted with Republicans on a resolution condemning Harris' role in the Biden administration’s handling of the U.S. border with Mexico.

“On the president, my opinion doesn’t matter at all,” Peltola told The Associated Press. “We are not a swing state; we’re very, very far away from being anywhere close to a swing state. So for people to demand a certain reaction, it’s a waste of energy.”

The majority of registered voters in Alaska are not affiliated with a party, a fact Peltola cited in explaining why she would not be endorsing anyone . The last time Alaska went for a Democratic presidential nominee was 1964.

The pace of this year’s race so far has been slow compared to the mad scramble two years ago sparked by Young's death. Nearly 50 candidates, including 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, ran in the special primary seeking to replace him.

Peltola, who is Yup’ik and is a former state lawmaker from a rural community, went on to win the special general election to serve the remainder of Young's term and later won a full term , casting herself as a consensus builder and running on a platform of "fish, family and freedom.”

That year also was the debut of Alaska's voter-approved open primary and ranked choice general election system. Supporters and critics of the system alike cite Peltola's success for why they either think it's working or that it should be scrapped .

Backers of ranked voting say it provides voters more choice and rewards candidates who appeal to a broader portion of the electorate. Opponents say it's confusing and pushes voters to rank candidates they don't support.

Most polling locations opened on time Tuesday, but several did not open until around 10 a.m., and one in Anaktuvuk Pass — an Alaska Native community of about 400 in the central Brooks Range in northern Alaska — did not open until around 7:30 p.m., roughly a half hour before polls closed at 8 p.m., Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher said by email. Polling sites in the Alaska Native villages of Wales and Kaktovik had not opened, she said.

“Despite trying multiple ways to contact the poll workers, the individuals we had hired for those communities were unresponsive today,” Beecher said. Elections officials were able to connect with the mayor of Anaktuvuk Pass to open a location there, she said.

The polling location in another community, Kobuk, a village of about 160 people, opened in the morning but closed early due to flooding in the region, she said.

In the 2022 primary, 43 people voted in Kaktovik, which lies within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and 10 voted in Wales, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) northwest of Nome in western Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

In endorsing Dahlstrom, Trump had blamed Begich for Republicans losing in 2022, a year when Begich sniped at Palin, and Trump and Palin criticized ranked choice voting — with Trump calling it a “rigged deal.”

Begich is from a family of prominent Democrats, including his late grandfather, who held the House seat before Young. Begich had cast his pledge to withdraw from the race if he finished behind Dahlstrom as a way to drive Republican interest in the primary. He said Tuesday night that conservatives need to unite to defeat Peltola in November.

Dahlstrom, in an interview with the AP last week, had said that once the results were in, she wanted to talk with Begich, Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy and the head of the state Republican party to analyze “who got what and what it’s going to take to have a conservative in that seat vote-wise."

How China’s H-6 Badger Bomber Came Knocking At Alaska’s Door

Explore the surprising approach of China’s H-6 bomber toward Alaska's airspace.

Bombers Approaching Alaska

On July 24, U.S. and Canadian armed forces scrambled jet fighters when long-range radars detected strategic bombers nearing Alaska's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). Two Russian Tu-95 bombers and two Chinese H-6K 'Badgers' triggered the alert.

Strategic Implications

The H-6K’s entry into Alaska's ADIZ symbolized China's growing strategic ambitions. Historically, the Russian Tu-95s had often ventured close to various countries' airspaces, but China's H-6K appearance signaled a first near the continental U.S.

China's Strategic Bomber Fleet

China boasts a substantial bomber fleet, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) operates between 210-230 H-6s. This number surpasses the active bomber fleets of both the U.S. and Russia, reflecting China's commitment to strengthening its military capabilities over decades.

h-6 bomber missiles comparison table

H-6 Roles and Capabilities

The H-6 series fulfills multiple roles, including carrying supersonic anti-ship missiles like the YJ-12, enhancing Beijing's ability to target U.S. naval forces. Bombers like the H-6K and H-6J exhibit updated engines and electronic warfare tech, extending their operational reach and combat effectiveness.

H-6 Bomber Organizational Structure

The PLAAF organizes its H-6 fleet into nine regiments and two separate bomber brigades, each fielding 20-30 aircraft. These units are spread across China’s central and eastern regions, ensuring widespread operational coverage.

Potential Wartime Roles

In a major conflict, H-6 bombers could interdict shipping to Taiwan, conduct long-distance attacks on U.S. bases in Japan and Guam, and assist electronic warfare efforts. Their range allows them to strike from unexpected angles, adding complexity to enemy defenses.

H-6 Models in Service

The H-6K is the most advanced model, equipped with advanced sensors and long-range missile carrying capability. Other variants, like the H-6G and H-6J, are designed for maritime strikes, carrying powerful anti-ship missiles.
