My New BGT Stability Tour 2 Polar Putter Shaft

Breakthrough Golf Technology originally introduced their Stability putter shafts with the intent of creating a new feel and an evolved design in putter shafts that’s a better match for modern putters. With the original design being somewhat larger and heavier, BGT would go on to launch a “slimmer” version based on Tour feedback looking for a closer transition from traditional steel to something more stable and similarly balanced. In response to that feedback, BGT launched the Stability Tour model. With further feedback, BGT has launched the Stability Tour 2 Polar shaft. We’ll cover the differences you need to know about in this review.

BGT went with a very distinct “polar ice” look hence the name Stability Tour 2 Polar . They call it a “tactile, soft touch coating” and it won’t scratch or discolor. Admittedly, my time with the putter has been limited, but I haven’t noticed any scratching yet myself. For a sharp contrast, BGT cerakotes the steel extension black. There’s a cool sort of Star Wars Stormtrooper look going on which looks sick when paired with the right putter head. I should also point out that the Tour 2 Polar has a thinner profile so it will look closer to what you’re used to when looking down a standard putter shaft. Sure, it may take some adjusting, but you should be focusing on the ball anyway.

How Does it Feel?

The major difference in the BGT Stability Tour 2 Polar shaft is its feel. BGT built the Polar with “30% more high modulus graphite” which creates a softer and more responsive feel. As part of their efforts to increase stability, the original Stability shaft was a little harsher and muted. The Stability Tour lines have a softer feel with better feedback that’s a better match for putting. At least, that’s my opinion.

With Stability in the name, you should expect a certain level of firmness. While the response is good, you should expect the putter to feel a little more rigid. This helps keep the putter head from wanting to twist so you have better control and accuracy.

On-Course Performance

All of my experience to this point with Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability shafts has been with blade heads. The experiences were generally positive, but I thought I should try something different for this Stability Tour 2 Polar review. Given the idea is to have more stability in the putting stroke, I thought it might be worth seeing what it’s like pairing the Tour 2 Polar with a high MOI mallet. The Cobra King 3D Printed Agera I recently reviewed immediately came to mind. Let me make this clear…this was exactly the right choice.

To catch you up real quick, MOI means “moment of inertia”. In short, this is easily described as how much the club wants to twist/rotate at impact. A higher MOI means the club wants to twist less, which then should mean you’re more accurate. In this case, the high-MOI Agera paired with the Stability Tour 2 Polar resulted in incredible control. I felt the shaft itself smoothed out the putting stroke nicely and the mallet head kept things quiet and clean. In terms of performance, there really isn’t much else to say. I definitely felt more in control of the putter with the BGT in it than I did with regular steel and my putting was legitimately better with it.

Final Thoughts – Breakthrough Golf Technology Stability Tour 2 Polar Shaft

If you’re a player that feels like they could benefit from more stability in your putting stroke, Breakthrough Golf Technology shafts are worth testing. But keep in mind that putting gets really subjective really fast. Regardless of setup, aim, and stroke path, the putter has to feel right in your hands and look good to your eye. For these very reasons, I’d strongly encourage anyone to get fitted for BGT Stability shafts before diving in because they are certainly unique and an intriguing option in this new multi-material low-torque putter shaft market. I’m a really big fan of this mallet/Stability Tour 2 Polar combination at the moment, which I honestly did not expect. Now I have a nice little putter battle taking place in my bag…

Have you reviewed LAGP’s putter shaft that’s popular on tour? Was wondering how this would compare. Also, does this shaft work with any hosel types? I know there are some out there that only work with the plumbers neck

We have not reviewed the LA Shaft, but there are some pretty interesting theories out there on it. I’ll just leave it at that.

As far as options for the BGT stuff, the nature of this shaft allows for connecting to any putter. See the putter referenced in this post. It’s not a plumber’s neck.

Shaft Stiffness Profile Comparison

Steel shafts are not strong enough to balance out today’s heavier putter heads.  Stability Tour is 97% stiffer than a steel shaft, especially in the Stabilised Zone of the putter.  This area is the critical part of the shaft that controls the flexing and twisting forces.

Introduction

Last year, Barney Adams, the man behind Adams Golf, brought Breakthrough Golf Technology’s first product, the Stability Putter Shaft (review HERE ), to market.  Using a combination of steel and graphite, it claimed to deliver superior results on the green.  BGT’s newest release is the Stability Tour, a shaft that pairs the performance of the Stability shaft with a more traditional look and feel.

Part of the reason for creating the Stability Tour shaft was to make it look more like a traditional putter shaft.  The new Stability Tour has a 13% reduction in diameter compared to the original, a difference which is very noticeable (see photo above).  In addition to the reduced diameter, the Stability Tour uses a black sleeve/adapter, which is less noticeable than the silver one on the original Stability shaft.

In the photo above, you can see the Stability Tour next to a black steel shaft.  While you can certainly see the difference, I found that when I was putting I didn’t notice it at all.

The feel of the Stability Tour has changed substantially from the original.  First, the weight has been reduced from 125 grams to 110 grams .  Additionally, the balance point was moved toward the grip to bring it more in line with traditional steel shafts.  Both of these changes worked exactly as planned: the Stability Tour feels identical to a traditional steel shaft.

To soften the feel of impact , Breakthrough Golf put 30% more carbon into the Stability Tour shaft .  As I said about the original Stability shaft, I don’t find that it softens the feel as much as it cleans it up.  Pure strikes feel almost identical with steel vs. the Stability Tour, but mishits don’t have as much “noise” with the Stability Tour.

Performance

The claims that Breakthrough Golf makes about the Stability Tour putter shaft seem bold but are very mild by golf industry standards.  They state that the Stability Tour has an 82% decrease in [club face] deviation from square compared to steel and that the Stability Tour delivers a more consistent smash factor across the face .  This translates to putts that have more consistent distance and more accurate start lines.

While those claims are eyebrow-raising, in talking with Barney Adams (listen HERE ) he is very clear that the Stability shaft isn’t going to magically transform anyone’s putting .  The Stability Tour should help golfers improve their distance control and reduce three-putts, but it won’t make every 20 footer find the bottom of the cup.

Based on my initial results and my experience with the original Stability Shaft, I’m excited to have the Stability Tour in my bag next season .  I prefer the more traditional weighting of the Stability Tour and the slimmer look.  While it may be a bit of the honeymoon effect, I was seeing more mid-range putts end up in or next to the cup compared to my steel shafted putter with the same head.

When products are redesigned with feedback from Tour, they don’t necessarily get better for the average golfer.  In the case of the Breakthrough Golf Stability Tour shaft, the upgrades that the Tour players want will be enjoyed by amateurs as well.  With a slimmer look and more traditional weighting, the new Stability Tour makes for a seamless transition away from steel.  If you’d like to demo a Stability shaft for yourself, head to your nearest Club Champion .

I’m the guy at Independent Golf Reviews that talks about shafts on woods, irons and wedges.  Most golfers I fit will go out of their way to tell me that the shaft is the most important part of the club. They want to make sure they have the right shaft in every club. Yet, when I fit a putter, not one person asks me if the putter shaft is correct for them. A putter swing has the same elements as any other club such as Club Path, Face Angle, Attack Angle and Hit Location, which results in Ball Speed, Launch Angle, Spin Rate and Direction. Simply put “ The putter shaft has not changed for over 50 years; it’s a simple steel pipe. Over the years head designs for putters have evolved and gotten dramatically heavier. This has resulted in shafts that are not stable or strong enough to keep these heavier, advanced putter heads from oscillating, twisting and turning. In fact, the strongest part of the putter shaft is under the hands, where it does the least good; the weakest part is near the club head.”

I heard an engineer from one of the top club manufacturers once say, “Technology is about materials and application.” From that point on, I’ve tried to break down equipment with that thought in mind. As Breakthrough Golf Technology says, “ Stability limits unwanted movement by stiffening the shaft by 25% without abolishing feel and reducing torque by almost 50%, to deliver the club face squarer at impact .”

The technology in a Stability Tour Black shaft helps to improve aspects of the putting stroke we normally wouldn’t think of. The new Stability Tour Putter shaft has added 30% more high modulus carbon fiber to help increase stiffness from their original shaft and balances like steel to allow for exact swing weight matching. It has a 13% reduction in the shaft diameter, making the Stability Tour shaft have a more streamlined transition from the graphite section to the steel tip. I really like the black-out appearance which blends well with nearly any putter head and has a smooth gloss, but not shiny coating. The contrast of black and silver with my putter set up has people asking me about what I am putting with.

BGT Stability Tour Opinions

I know this has been discussed in the past but I am considering throwing in the bag (In a Scotty Squareback 2) and I wanted to know any recent thoughts on the BGT Stability Tour. Not that it matters but I don't see it much on tour and I just wanted to know if it was still favored by many. 

Also wanted to know any recent thoughts compared to the stock steel shafts.

I have found that the BGT enhances the feel of every putter ive ever tried it on. Feels like I more consistently hit the sweet spot when using the BGT.    My miss with putts are usually loft

My miss with putts are usually loft related as I have been fit to 2 degree loft and the BGT appears to help with that fwiw.

I got a stability tour installed recently but haven’t been able to take it to the course yet due to winter weather still hanging around. Inside on my putting mat at home though, I’m finding an increase in both putts made and putts that are what I deem “center of the cup.” There’s so little deviation in face angle due to the stiffer shaft that as long as I can make a half decent stroke and I’m square with the face to the target, the ball just barrels towards the center of the cup.

Do I think it’s going to radically change my putting game? No putting fundamentals are still at play and a shaft isn’t going to change the outcomes. But do I think it helps some? Absolutely.

my main concern is I am hearing how the stability tour is much lighter than the LA (I was in between the two)

I have the Stability Tour in 2 putters. I really like them. I think the benefit is probably marginal, but overall I enjoy the feel much more. 

I did have the LAGP 135 gram P-Series in a putter. It was also nice, but I do like the BGT more.

Odyssey 2-Ball Eleven • BGT Stability Tour

I have been gaming a special select square back 2 with a BGT stability shaft for over couple years now. Absolutely love it. Every time I try to venture away from it, it sucks me back in. The feel and everything about it just work for me. I have a Flatso 2.0 tour issue corded grip on it and I keep hoping super stroke brings them back. It is the best feeling grip to me ever and mine is a bit ragged...

Has a notable impact on lag putting for me, much improved. Although I don't love the feel, always felt like it was a bit too stiff. 

To me it felt too light and a bit stiff. However the ball felt good off the face and no doubt it’s incredibly stable. Just wasn’t for me but it’s a very good shaft and does what they claim

I recently installed a black tour that I got new at a ridiculous good price, anyhow I installed in my Scotty Champions Choice (2023) newport2 + head. I will say I am very happy with it but have only been able to use indoors due to northern Michigan and snow.  I think the weight is perfect for the newport2+ head.  Phantom head will be a little heavier but not too much so I would imagine you liking that combo.  I will try to attach a photo, I can’t figure out how lol, but it looks nice and feels nice.  I don’t think you’ll be disappointed as I have never had any of my customers or students that play any stability shaft not like them.  Best of luck

I ended up putting the stability tour black in my champions choice Flowback 1.5 and it’s been amazing! Love the combo and look.  I got another one for my super select fastback 1.5 I am sure it’s gonna be great. Sold the phantom 7.5 just didn’t get along with the fangs
