First question on the docket: Do travel agents get discounts? They sure do, my friend!

Although, as we'll discuss further, there is a lot more nuance to things than just a yes or no when it comes to if travel agents get discounts. Keep on reading because we'll go over which travel agents get discounts (every supplier is going to have different parameters) and what types of travel advisors can get discounts for.

Different Types of Travel Agent Rates & Incentives

Every supplier is going to have a different kind of travel agent rate or loyalty program. Some are complicated. Some are simple.

Here’s what you can generally expect in terms of travel agent discount programs:

• Point Systems: Depending on the vendor, point systems offer you just that — a certain number of points per night booked. Points allotted will likely vary by tier of property. If you book a luxury property, you’ll get more points. Travel agent point systems, while somewhat complicated, are great for flexibility. It levels the playing field and operates like an amped-up client-facing rewards program.
• Cash Incentives: Some vendors will offer travel agents hard cash for bookings (e.g. you get $25 for every room night booked). This isn't a rate or discount, but it's definitely an incentive!
• Straight-up Flat Discounts: Some travel agent discounts are simple—you get a certain percentage off your stay. Easy peasy.
• Special Reduced Rates: Because you’re a travel agent (or because you love to travel), you know that suppliers have peak seasons, different classes of properties, rooms, etc. Many suppliers will issue reduced rates exclusive to travel agents, outlining what the cost is for a different room category, itinerary, sailing date, etc.
• Traveling for Free: Free travel is not the norm. There are circumstances travel agents may get a free cruise, a free theme park ticket, or free nights at a resort (etc.). This typically happens after a travel agent completes a vendor’s training program or if you're a top sales person of that supplier/brand.
• Group Travel Rates : I’m not going to go deep into group rates, since this is something that (believe it or not) is typically offered in addition to travel agent rates. If you book a certain number of people on a trip or cruise (or a certain number of nights stay) you get a free credit you can use for yourself or for a client. (e.g. for Globus brands, you can receive travel agent discounts ranging from 25% - 100% depending on itinerary, group size, and when you book.)
• Familiarization (FAM) Trips: In my mind, FAM trips are more of a travel agent perk than a travel agent discount or rate. FAMs are free or deeply discounted trips offered to travel agents (or travel professionals) to educate them about a product or destination. Here's a great explainer of FAM trips .

Suppliers want to keep travel agents happy! Many will have some combination of these perks above.

8 Things You Need to Know About Travel Agent Rates & Discounts

Here are a few things to know about what to expect when you're shopping for travel agent discounts:

1. You Need an Accreditation Number to Get travel agent Discounts

You need to be a travel agent to access travel agent rates and discounts. What makes someone a travel agent? An accreditation number . . . whether you get your own or align with a host agency .

2. Travel Agent Discounts are for Active Travel Agents

Beyond having an accreditation number, you need to sell travel. I know this may seem incredibly obvious, but oftentimes vendors will only offer travel agent rates or perks after you reach a certain sales threshold.

3. A Niche Will Help You Get More Travel Agent Bonuses & Rates (Here’s Why)

Part of developing a travel agent niche is getting a pulse on who your preferred suppliers are. When you begin to get a handle on what suppliers you love, you can focus your time and energies on learning those suppliers inside out.

This will help you establish the deep product knowledge and supplier relationships required to be a successful seller. In turn, you'll have access to more travel agent discounts and rewards as your sales increase.

4. You Often Need to Complete a Vendor Certification to Get a Discount

If you’re completely new, you’re not going to have a long scroll of past sales to help you access travel agent rates. But don’t worry. Many suppliers offer special rates, FAMs, or even free trips once you complete their training programs.

You'll want to make sure you stay current on supplier certifications so you can keep up with their updates and offer your clients the most recent info. Suppliers want you to love their brands and they know you gotta experience it yourself to love it!

5. Rules Most Likely Apply

Travel agent discounts are often saddled with long terms and conditions and/or fine print. This fine print may be peppered with info like blackout dates or that rates are subject to change (without asking for your permission). Unsurprisingly, travel agent rates are non-commissionable.

6. Travel Agent Rates and Programs can Change

Yep. They can and do. So when you read about specific travel agent discounts below, be sure you always check directly with your supplier/ BDM (Business Development Manager) for the most updated travel agent discount policy!

7. Q: If You Book Under a Host agency, Will You Get Your Discount?

Yes. When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

An exception is Disney. For Earmarked Disney agencies (Disney's top selling agency program), it's the accrediting agency that will receive the allotted theme park tickets and travel agent rates to distribute among their agents. So ask your agency how that works if you want to get in it. That said, there are still incentives for solo Disney advisors who complete the College of Disney Knowledge! (Just check out the download !)

8. If you get bonuses, you may need to pay taxes on it

Any point system that can be exchanged for cash may be subject to taxes if you earn more than $600 in bonuses. Don’t ask me. Ask your accountant and make sure you know the tax implications of points you cash in.

Questions to Ask About Travel Agent Rates

You'll likely have questions about a supplier's travel agent rates. One thing to stress is that only asking about a supplier's discounts for travel agents is... well, it's tacky. Bottom line: Your first communication with a vendor should not be about their travel agent rates.

These rates are for travel pros who are serious about their trade and want to increase sales. Make the effort to educate yourself on the product, let your BDM (business development manager) know your plan to help increase your sales for their product, and THEN you can ask about the travel agent rates.

If you’re really wanting to compare different rates and programs, here are a few questions you to think about, some of which are in the download above!

• What travel accreditations are accepted? (TRUE may not be accepted everywhere)
• Are there companion benefits?
• Do you need to complete supplier education to secure the rate? If so, how often do I need to renew or recertify (if at all)?
• Are there other eligibility requirements?
• What's the sales threshold to attain travel agent rates or benefits?
• Does belonging to a host agency impact my benefits?
• What are typical blackout dates or seasons?
• How long do I have to redeem my travel agent benefits (if it’s a point system)? When do they expire?
• How do I request or access these benefits?

I'm going to do a deeper dive into a few travel agent hotel rates. There are a zillion different properties so I'm including just a few here. They offer a good idea of what kind of rates travel agents can expect from hotels.

You may be able to find better travel agents rates if you book the hotel through a tour operator.

Keep in mind that these hotel programs listed below are hotel-direct. Advisors seeking discounted hotel rates will need to book them directly through the hotel (rather than booking via a tour operator).

Another thing to note is that hotels with education programs typically will offer the best travel rates (above a standard travel agent rate).

(International Hotel Group) IHG Travel Agent Rates

IHG is linked and included in our download above . Yay! IHG offers a baseline discount of 35% off their Best Flex Rate to travel agents. Not to0 shabs!

But IHG often has offers beyond their base discounts, induing higher discounts on room rates, discounts on spa services, and other fun stuff. At the time of writing this, IHG had special offers that ranged from 35% - 50%.

If you're a travel agent, accessing IHG's travel agent rates is easy. Here's how:

• You need an ARC, IATA, TIDs, or TRUE number to set up an account with IHG. If you're a travel agent employee and you don't have a travel ID card, you can provide a letter on agency letterhead from agency management verifying your agency employment.
• To book IHG's travel agent rates, you need to login to your IHG travel agent account . If you don't have one, you can register here .

Marriott acquired Starwood in 2015. So if you're looking for Starwood's travel agent rates, look no further than Marriott. Marriott has two different types of travel agent rates. Here's the rundown:

Marriott's travel agent rate is their blanket travel agent rate program which isavailable to any accredited travel agent with a valid IATA, ARC, CLIA or TIDS accreditation number . It's worth noting that Marriott does not accept TRUE number s.

The travel agent rate varies depending on availability, hotel category, and season. Marriott's travel agent discounts run up to 50% , but you can typically expect less. (At the time of writing this, the discounts ranged from 10-15% when I searched my hometown.)

Marriott's Fam-Tastic program is designed less for personal leisure and more to provide an opportunity for agents to familiarize themselves with properties (hence the name).

For Marriott's Fam-tastic program, advisors can reserve one room for four nights maximum.

This program is only available to Marriott's preferred travel agencies . You can visit host profiles and drop them a note in the Q&A section to ask if they are a preferred Marriott agency.

Marriott's FAM-tastic rate offers deeper discounts than their standard travel agent rate but with more requirements. In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a standard travel agent rate, other requirements include:

• Have an updated Marriott International (MI) Partner Privileges profile

Keep in mind that Hilton travel agent discounts are off full price, not Hilton Honors discounts, pay in full, or other discount prices like AAA or AARP.

• Go to Hilton's travel agent site and click "Special Rates" then select the "Travel Agents" option.

Beyond Hilton's travel agent rates, they also offer the Unlimited Rewards program to their travel advisor partners, which awards you .50¢ to $2.00 per night stay you book for your clients. (This also applies to Avis and Budget car rentals as well.)

Just remember that if you start racking up the dough through Unlimited Rewards, you may need to report the income to your springtime friend, the IRS.

Travel Agent Airline Discounts

I'm going to take a deep dive into travel agent airline discounts. Why? Travel agent airline discounts are more complicated to access for a smaller reward .

Here's why . . .

These travel agent airline rates are typically referred to as "AD50" or "AD75," signifying 50%-75% airline discounts for travel agents. At first, this seems like an amazing discount.

But as you’ve probably guessed, travel agents do not get 50-75% off their airline tickets. Otherwise, so many people would want to become a travel agent that our website would break :)

Without going too deep into the weeds, here's why these airline discounts can seem misleading at first.

Airlines break seats down into many different fare classes . All these fare classes have different pricing and rules attached to them. Among other things, the fare classes help the airline understand if you paid full fare or a discounted rate, if you’re in first class/business class/economy class, if you’re doing one way or round trip, and lots of other details.

Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

When it comes to travel agent airline discounts, the AD50 and AD75 discounts apply only to Y-fare class seats, which are full-fare economy seats. Essentially, they’re the most expensive economy-class tickets possible. Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

Not only are AD50 and AD75 discounts often more expensive than other economy tickets available, but there are also more hoops to jump through to access them. Airlines that offer these flight discounts will often have stringent eligibility requirements and detailed terms and conditions required to even request them.

According to seasoned corporate travel advisor and owner of Pioneer Travel, Mike Edic, "By the time you figure out the 'discounted' price, you can still purchase a real ticket for a lot less." Edic elaborated that these rates are seldom cheaper unless it's a last-minute booking (where all that remains are those pricey, full-fare Y-class seats).

If you are a certified travel agent looking to save on your next stay with IHG, make sure you take advantage of their discounted IHG travel agent rates. IHG’s familiarization program for travel agents offers discounts of up to 50% when you book through the IHG Travel Consultant Connection Portal.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at IHG Travel Agent Rates and how Travel Advisors can take advantage of them. We’ll dig into the IHG travel agent rate program, called “Travel Consultant Connection” and see how much travel advisors can actually save by using these special rates at IHG properties.

So whether you’re an agent planning a business trip to familiarize yourself with a property or just looking to take a leisurely vacation, read on to discover how you can save big on your next hotel booking through IHG.

Like most other major hotel chains, IHG offers discounted rates for travel agents to familiarize themselves with IHG hotels and resorts at a reduced rate. These rates are called “familiarization rates” and are only available to travel agents so they can be more informed when promoting an IHG property to their clients.

The following IHG benefits and terms apply to a Travel Agent’s personal travel only, they are not for client bookings:

• 2 rooms allowed per stay, unlimited stays. (If booking a 2nd room the agent must be with the guest at time of check in).
• Rooms must be booked at least 24 hours in advance of check-in.
• Your Travel Industry ID (IATAN/IATA card) is required at check-in.
• Earn IHG One Rewards points for your stay. You can also register and qualify for I HG One Rewards promotions .
• The rate is not valid for commission.
• The rate is only available to book via the IHG Travel Agent Portal , or by calling the Central Reservation Office at 1- 800-810-4499. 

The program has a higher discount than some of the other travel agents programs like Marriott Fam-tastic , Hyatt , and Hilton . On top of that, travel agents can earn IHG One Rewards points when booking stays which is a big plus that the other hotel chains don’t provide.

How to Book IHG Travel Agents Rate

IHG Travel Agent rates can be booked with through the normal IHG Booking Page or through the IHG ICC Travel Agent Portal . If you are booking through the main booking page, make sure the “Travel Consultant Discount Rate” is selected in the Rate Preference field and enter your IATA# in the IATA field.

Below is an example of the savings a travel consultant would receive a the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Chicago. With a room rate of $240 per night, the discount for this property is approximately 28% off the prepaid rate and 32% off the member discount rate.

The terms of this rate are as follows:

• Rate is available for travel agents who can present a valid IATA ID or travel agent ID card at check-in. Rate requires to be booked one day in advance and is limited to 2 rooms per travel agent. If booking a 2nd room the agent must be with the guest at the time of check-in.

No. If you book a room with an IHG Travel Agent Rate, you’ll be required to present your Travel Industry ID/IATAN Card, Agency Business Card, or a letter on agency letterhead from agency management verifying your agency employment is required at check-in.

This is not something you can “hack”, you need to be a registered travel agent to get these rates.

Outstanding!! wish I had seen this sooner. I just rented a car for 3 weeks from Alamo in Ft Lauderdale. I showed the counter attendant my CLIA card and asked for a discount, which I did not get.

Why wouldn’t they accept it? Was it because it wasn’t an IATAN card? I have a CLIA card as well. Marriot Hotel Excellence allows a CLIA card for their FAMtastic rates

Your commission is usually a percentage of the accommodation cost net of any taxes (net of VAT and all local taxes) and varies according to the hotel brand and country.

The company authorised by Accor to pay your commission is Onyx CenterSource.

Commission is paid in the currency of the country where the agency is located. It is paid after the customer has checked out by wire transfer if you are a Onyx CenterSource member or by cheque if you are not.

The State of the Hotel Best Rate Guarantee

Where do you book your hotels rooms? Directly on a hotel website, through an online travel agency (OTA) like Priceline.com, through a members-only outfit like Club1 or with a traditional travel agent? Hotel chains are trying their hardest to get you to answer that question with "directly on the hotel website."

Between offering free internet, free breakfast , promising lower rates than booking through OTAs and even running expensive ad campaigns, hotel chains are investing significant amounts of money to get you to book directly. The reason behind this is simple -- when you don't book directly through the hotel, it has to pay your preferred booking channel a commission that can get as high as 10–15% of the room rate. Booking directly saves the hotel chains money, which they can then use to pass along savings. It also benefits you, the points-traveler, by allowing you to earn and use elite status perks, as well as hotel points.

Best Rate Guarantee Programs

To further incentivize direct bookings, all the major hotel chains offer best rate guarantees just in case you find a better deal somewhere else. Here's a look at their offerings.

IHG will match the lower competitor's rate and then give you five times the IHG Rewards Club points, up to 40,000 maximum, worth $200 according to TPG's latest valuations .

Hilton's price-match guarantee program is one of the most generous. If you find a lower rate, Hilton will match that rate and then offer 25% off the matched room rate. Hilton's claim form is also the most robust, since it pre-populates your reservation information for you.

Hyatt's best rate guarantee gives you a choice. Should you successfully submit a best rate guarantee claim , Hyatt will match the lower rate and then give you a choice: an additional 20% off the matched rate or 5,000 World of Hyatt points , worth $85 according to our latest valuations .

Like Hyatt, Marriott's best rate guarantee also gives a choice. After filing a valid claim, you can choose either an additional 25% off the matched rate or 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points (worth $40).

Terms and Conditions

Like many good things in life, the various hotel best rate guarantee comes with lots of conditions. Each chain has different language around the best rate guarantee but some of the key terms and conditions are shared across the chains.

• You must have already booked the room directly through the hotel chain (except for Hilton).
• The lower rate must be found on a valid competitor website.
• This excludes sites that don't tell you the hotel brand until the reservation is completed, sites that offer membership prices, sites that don't offer immediate confirmations and some others.
• The lower rate must have the exact same conditions as the rate booked directly through the hotel chain:
• same booking dates
• same room type
• same cancellation policies

I recently made 14 hotel bookings to test whether the hotel chains stuck to their words. Of my 14 best rate guarantee claims, only six were approved. What can you learn from my ~50% success rate?

1. Be Careful With Cancellation Policies

In my research, many of the lower rates I found had slightly different cancellation policies than the policy offered directly with the hotel. When I went to submit a best rate guarantee claim for the DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Downtown , my claim was denied because the cancellation policies were different. But you tell me, how different are these cancellation policies?

• Doubletree's cancellation policy: Change or cancel up to four days before arrival (up to 10/10/2019)

• Agoda.com cancellation policy: Free cancellation before Oct. 10, 2019

Clearly, the ambiguous language of "before Oct. 10" and "up to four days before arrival" was enough to invalidate my best rate guarantee claim.

2. Don't Forget to HUCA

Even though most best rate guarantee claims need to be submitted online (Hilton and Hyatt can be done over the phone), that doesn't mean you can't apply the principles of one of the best tricks in the book: Hang up, call again (HUCA).

In the previous example, I received an email from Hilton denying my claim. Nowhere in the denial email did it say I could contest the decision, but I simply replied to the email stating that the two cancellation policies are, in fact, the same. A few hours later, I received an update that my claim had been approved. It never hurts to ask!

3. Book the Absolute Lowest Rate

Another three of my claims were denied because I didn't book the "lowest available rate" directly through the hotel chains. In those three cases, I had booked the lowest publicly available rate, which was a bit higher than the rates the hotel chain offers to its loyalty members. Upon further inquiry, I needed to book the "Member" rate in order to satisfy the condition of booking the lowest available rate.

Beware: Although the hotel chains don't let you price match to an OTA's member rates, they hold you to a double standard by requiring you to book their absolute lowest rate, even if that rate requires you to be a member of the hotel's loyalty program.

4. Good Luck With the Math

Only two of my six successful best rate guarantee claims matched the exact competitor rates that I originally sent in. The other four approvals ranged from being 10% lower to 10% higher than the competitor rate that I sent in.

My assumption is that the rate discrepancies can be attributed to how the hotel chains calculates taxes and fees in the competitor's rate. While it was hard to pinpoint exactly how the chains figured the matched rate, one thing was clear: Don't expect to understand what's going on in the calculation.

5. Upload a Screen Shot

To streamline the claims process, take advantage of Hyatt's optional "Upload a Screen Shot" field. Take a screen shot of your web browser showing the OTA's lower rate and upload it to the Hyatt's claim form.

For the other chains, make sure to fill out the optional comments section, describing exactly how one could replicate your search for a lower hotel rate. Two of my OTA rates couldn't initially be verified during the claims process, so I had to explain by email exactly how I found the rate I submitted.

6. Patience Is a Virtue

After you've submitted your best rate guarantee claim, take a deep breath and wait. And then wait some more.

All the hotel chains promise an answer within 24 hours, but in my experience, Marriott and Hyatt take up much of their 24-hour allowance. In fact, I've still yet to hear back from Hyatt for one of my claims. Hilton took the award for quickest response, with an average response time of an hour or less.

Bottom Line

Hotels are trying their hardest to get you to book direct. By taking them up on their best rate guarantees, you can beat hotels at their own game when you find a cheaper rate on a competitor website. Book direct, find a better rate elsewhere and then get the hotel to match the rate and give you a further 20–25% off the matched rate. Just know what to expect when you submit that best rate guarantee claim and you'll be set for success.
