Those with an interest in learning more about life under the Nazi regime and its aftermath will want to visit the NS Documentation Centre of the City of Cologne (NS-Dokumentationszentrum der Stadt Köln). This important memorial gives an unvarnished account of National Socialist (Nazi) horrors, especially as they related to the citizens of Cologne.

A combination memorial site, interactive museum, and research facility, the center - sometimes referred to simply as NSDOK - is set in the actual building where prisoners were held by the Gestapo. Its most chilling experience is entering the actual prison cells in the basement with the writing of prisoners scratched into the walls.

The center attempts to put a human face on the effects of the police state on both Germans and occupied countries, with individual stories. Founded in 1860, Cologne Zoo (Kölner Zoologischer Garten) is one of Germany's oldest zoological gardens. Evidence of its age can be seen in its fine collection of 19th-century menagerie buildings, including its Moorish-style elephant house and an old birdhouse that's now home to chimps, and resembles a traditional Russian church.

Chocolate production line at the Cologne Chocolate Museum

The Cologne Chocolate Museum (Schokoladenmuseum) can trace its roots to 1972, when Hans Imhoff acquired the Stollwerck chocolate factory. What he discovered there was a rubbish container filled with broken machinery, packaging material, and other remnants of chocolate manufacturing.

Thus inspired, he began preserving and restoring these as the basis for the museum. Today, exhibits follow the entire chocolate-making process from bean to the finished packaged product. Highlights include interactive displays, collections of molds, antique chocolate boxes and wrappers, plus free samples from the chocolate fountain.

Established in the 19th century near the riverbank in Riehl, a northern district of Cologne, Flora and Botanical Garden (Flora und Botanischer Garten Köln) covers 11.5 hectares and is home to more than 10,000 species of plants.

Just six kilometers away from its famous cousin in Cologne, Altenberg Cathedral (Altenberger Dom) is one of the finest examples of Early Gothic architecture in Rhineland. 1. Cologne Cathedral

The most famous landmark of the Rhine metropolis is the Cologne Cathedral . The Roman Catholic church is one of the largest cathedrals in the Gothic architectural style and the first sight you see when leaving the main train station directly in the center.

Construction of this famous landmark began as early as 1248 – but the building was not completed until 1880. The fact that construction was interrupted for about 300 years was not atypical for such large projects in the late Middle Ages. Nevertheless, the pause is often explained by a legend: because the cathedral builder allegedly lost a bet with the devil and was summoned by him, no other master builder dared to take over the work for a long time.

Despite the delay, the Gothic elements of the early phase were almost seamlessly combined with the neo-Gothic architecture of the later construction phase. And although much of Cologne was destroyed during World War II, the cathedral remained seemingly unscathed. However, there was severe damage to it as well, only it was not visible at first glance.

Since 1996, Cologne Cathedral has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site . The most famous sights in the cathedral itself are the Epiphany Shrine, which houses the alleged bones of the Magi, and the Cathedral Treasury in the vaulted cellar.

Tickets for the treasury are only available on-site, as well as for the ascent of the south tower – which is with 157.22 meters, by the way, 4 cm higher than the north tower. After 533 steps, a phenomenal view awaits you there. Admission to Cologne Cathedral is free of charge.

2. Historic City Hall

What else is to do in Cologne? Another prominent building in the Old Town and one of the top sights in Cologne is the Historic Town Hall , which is located right next to the Old Market. It’s considered to be the oldest city hall in Germany and consists of different parts of the building, such as the core building with the Hansa Hall, the City Hall Tower, the administrative wing, and the Renaissance Arbor.

The town hall tower is a particularly interesting element of the town hall. It’s in the late Gothic style and also adorned with 124 figures , representing, for example, representatives of guilds and science, but also important princes and archbishops.

Below the clock, there is also the Platzjabbek , a wooden figurehead from the Middle Ages, which opens its mouth and sticks out its tongue every hour precisely. The tower also has a carillon that plays one of 24 melodies daily at 9, 12, 15, and 18 o’clock.

3. Historic Old Town

In addition to the characteristic colorful houses at the Fischmarkt, there are many other exciting corners and buildings hidden in Cologne’s Old Town . 4. Groß St. Martin

Another prominent church in Cologne is Groß St. Martin . Its characteristic square tower with four smaller corner towers, due to the cloverleaf-shaped ground plan, is a well-known landmark. The basilica was built in the 12th century on the foundations of Roman buildings. Today you can marvel at excavations from Roman times in the newly created crypt.

Groß St. Martin is one of a total of 12 large Romanesque churches in Cologne . 5. Towers and Gates of the Old City Wall

The first parts of the Cologne city wall were already built between the 1st and 3rd centuries. From the Middle Ages until the 19th century, the wall was extended again and again. While some elements of the old Roman city wall are now on display in the Roman-Germanic Museum ( website ) numerous towers and gates still stand in their original places.

Of what used to be a total of 19 towers, the best-preserved part of the Roman city fortifications today is the Römerturm ( Google Maps ). The use of different stones and many ornaments makes the tower very special. Only about 100 meters further south stands the ruins of Helen’s Tower , which, however, is not ornamented.

There are also four medieval city gate towers still standing. These include the Eigelsteintorburg ( Google Maps ), which is one of the most visited sights in Cologne today. You can also rent it as an event location .

The Hahnentorburg ( Google Maps ) in the west of the city is also still well preserved, as is the small Dreikönigenpförtchen ( Google Maps ) – this is not a city gate castle, but the only preserved gate that used to separate the urban area from the grounds of a monastery.

6. River Rhine and Hohenzollern bridge

Cologne is the largest city on the Rhine (German: Rhein ). The river influences the appearance of the city and creates a unique atmosphere. Because of it, there are also some indispensable sights and unusual things to do that you must see during your visit to Cologne. The Rhine is an absolute crowd puller and offers many opportunities for recreation, cycling, other sports, and just a walk.

The most famous one, which you probably also know from the characteristic shot of the cathedral with the Rhine, is the Hohenzollernbrücke ( Google Maps ). The characteristic structure with the three large arches is considered the busiest railroad bridge in Germany. It’s also distinguished by the tradition of love locks which are now estimated at a number of over 500,000. You’ll find many couples placing locks here.

Rhine promenade and Rhine boulevard Deutz

You can get an excellent view of Cologne and the Hohenzollern Bridge from the Rheinboulevard Deutz ( Google Maps ), a large flight of steps directly on the river. In general, the Rhine promenade along the riverbank is perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll!

A spectacular highlight in Cologne every July is the Kölner Lichter ( Website ), the largest music-synchronized fireworks display in Europe. Again, you’ll get the best view from the banks of the Rhine. When everything is lit up in the evening, it looks great.

Rheinauhafen

The old Rheinauhafen is no longer in use today and has been transformed into a futuristic posh district after restructuring. Particularly famous here are the angular crane houses, which house luxury apartments and offices. The renovated old brick buildings offer an exciting contrast

It’s worth taking a walk because you’ll also find numerous cafés and bars with a view of the Rhine in this hip neighborhood, which, by the way, is located on a peninsula. You can also find the Wurstbraterei, the bratwurst stand from the Cologne Tatort , at the Rheinauhafen . In addition, there is the well-known Sion Sommerkino ( Website ) – an open-air cinema with a very special flair.

7. Belgian Quarter, Agnes Quarter & South City

What else is to see in Cologne? In addition to the old Rheinauhafen, Cologne has other trendy neighborhoods – or, as it’s called in Cologne, Veedel –, that is definitely worth a visit. With boutiques, bars, and cute cafés, the Belgische Quarter around Brüsseler Platz ( Google Maps ) has almost everything you might wish to see. The adjacent Hohenzollernring is considered a well-known strolling and party mile.

The Agnesviertel with the parish church of St. Agnes is located in the north of the city near Eigelsteintorburg. In addition to imposing buildings such as the Old Fire Station ( Google Maps ) you will also find nice restaurants, bars, and cafes here. Fort X , a historic fortress with a rose garden, is also located there ( Google Maps ).

In the opposite direction, you’ll find Südstadt , often referred to as one of the most “urkölsch” (original Cologne) neighborhoods. The popular and child-friendly area around Chlodwigplatz ( Google Maps ) with the Severinstorburg all the way to the Rhine also offers numerous cafés, bars, and restaurants. 8. Flora und Botanischer Garten

The Flora is an 11.5-hectare green space in the north of Cologne and the city’s botanical garden . The festival house located there is also called Flora . Opened in 1864, the palatial historicist-style building was originally intended to serve as a palm house, but is now used for conventions and events and can also be rented privately.

Note : New show greenhouses will be built in the Botanical Garden by 2022, and are expected to open in 2023 . Nevertheless, you can still find more than 10,000 plant species from all over the world there at the moment, which makes a visit to this sight worthwhile!

In case of bad weather, but also otherwise, I would like to recommend you two of the most popular museums in Cologne . The Museum Ludwig near the cathedral is one of the most important art museums in Europe and exhibits art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Another much-visited attraction in Cologne, which should be of particular interest to those who love chocolate, is the Chocolate Museum ( online tickets* ). It has been operated by Swiss chocolate manufacturer Lindt & Sprüngli since 2006, is located in Rheinauhafen, and houses all the important information on the history and production of chocolate. There are even cocoa trees growing in a tropical house. This museum is also the perfect option when it rains.

10. Insider Tip: Melaten Cemetery

Another attraction you should visit when in Cologne is the Melaten Cemetery . It’s still considered an insider’s tip because you have to walk a bit out of the city to get there. Celebrities of Cologne rest here. Walk along the graves and you’ll see Willi Ostermann on an overview – he was the composer and lyricist of local and carnival songs. Of course, they can’t be missing in Cologne. But you will also discover the graves of the Millowitsch family, which looks back on a theater dynasty, at this interesting place.

The 55,000 graves in the cemetery are surrounded by impressive monuments. Be sure to walk through the park as well – it’s very worth it. In our eyes, the place is a must-see in Cologne.

I think we don’t have to add that cemeteries are a place of rest and you shouldn’t disturb the other visitors. But cemeteries, like Melaten Cemetery, are also suitable for sightseeing in Cologne.

Although this is no longer an insider tip, you should definitely take a look at the view from above. The entrance fee is 3 euros. West of the old town is another highlight, especially in the summer. It’s the Aachener Weiher ( Google Maps ), an artificial lake. You can’t swim in it, but it’s perfect for relaxing, barbecuing or playing sports.

Cologne Breweries

You’re wondering: Where do you have to go in Cologne? Well, then we have another attraction for you. Cologne looks back on a long brewery tradition. You can find the rustic “Weetschaften” (breweries) all over the city. They serve delicious food all day long and, of course, the characteristic Kölsch beer , which has often been brewed there for hundreds of years.

The light, top-fermented full-bodied beer must have been produced in Cologne to be called so. The waiter here, by the way, is called a Köbes. If they seem bad-tempered, it’s not your fault – the biting remarks are part of the job.

Current information on the opening of Cologne Cathedral

The following applies to all visitors to the cathedral - whether you are attending a church service, are a tourist or part of a guided group:

Please be prepared for identity checks by cathedral staff when entering the cathedral, the treasury and the tower ascent.
Only small bags and rucksacks (maximum A4 size) may be taken into the cathedral, the treasury and the tower ascent. Wheeled suitcases, cabin trolleys, hiking rucksacks and other large items of luggage are not permitted in the cathedral and its special areas, nor can they be stored there.

We thank you for your understanding of these measures, which contribute to your safety.

This section contains the rules of admission for Cologne Cathedral, the tower, the Cathedral Treasury, and guided tours. Please note that we reserve the right to change the rules of admission given below at any time depending on the daily incidence rate in the City of Cologne.

Opening hours: daily from 06:00 - 20:00

The Cologne Cathedral world heritage site is, as a rule, open to tourists on working days (Monday to Saturday) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and on Sundays between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and the tower narthex after the evening Mass until 8 p.m. Because Masses take priority, we reserve the right to change opening hours. Please consult our up-to-date Mass times page before your visit.

It is generally possible to pray or light a candle in the tower narthex during a liturgy.

Service hours

Masses at Cologne Cathedral are held at the following times: Working days (Monday to Saturday): Mass: 6.30 a.m., 7.15 a.m., 8.00 a.m., 9.00 a.m., and 6.30 p.m. Devotion: Monday to Friday, 6.00 p.m.

Sundays: Mass: 7.00 a.m., 8.30 a.m., 10.00 a.m., 12 midday, 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. Divine Office: 6.00 p.m.

You have the opportunity to go to confession on working days. You find the confessionals at the chapels in the ambulatory.

First Sunday of the month: Chapter Mass in Latin

Many Catholics whose native language is not German visit Cologne Cathedral and celebrate Mass with us, especially on Sundays. In order to ensure that they can pray with us and not just silently in their own languages, the High Mass at 10 a.m. on the first Sunday in the month is, as a rule, celebrated partially in Latin. The parts in Latin are the well-known texts that are used in every Mass. This means that all Mass-goers – whatever their native language – can pray together.

You will find the Latin texts and a German translation in the Gotteslob prayer book, Numbers 582 to 591.

Cologne Cathedral tower FAQs

When standing facing the main portal of the cathedral, turn to your right and walk towards Roncalliplatz. After just a few metres, you will see a flight of steps beside the south tower leading downwards. These steps are marked 'Dom-Turm / Parkhaus / Toiletten' (which means 'cathedral tower/car park/toilets'). The entrance to the tower is at the bottom of these steps.

March–April: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily May–September: from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily October: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily November–February: from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

During the carnival season in Cologne, the tower is closed on Women's Carnival Day (Weiberfastnacht), Carnival Saturday, Carnival Sunday, Rose Monday (Rosenmontag). The dates of these days change from year to year. The tower is also closed on 11 November, Christmas Eve (24 December), Christmas Day (25 December), New Year's Eve (31 December), and New Year's Day (1 January) every year.

Half an hour before the tower closes.

Adults pay €6. Children, schoolchildren, students, and persons with special needs pay a reduced entry fee of €3. Families can buy a family ticket for €12.

Combi tickets, which give visitors access to both the tower and the Cathedral Treasury, cost €10 for adults. The reduced rate is €5,00. Family combi tickets cost €20.

It depends on how fast you can climb the 533 steps to the viewing platform (which is about 100 m above ground) and how long you want to stay on the viewing platform. We recommend that you plan in between 30 and 45 minutes.

No. It is neither necessary nor possible to make a booking or reserve a time slot. Just come to the ticket desk on the day of your visit. Children and youth groups must be accompanied by responsible adults.

Not usually, no. But on busy days when a lot of tourists want to climb the tower, there may be a wait.

People accompanying school groups pay the reduced price. People accompanying people with special needs who can show the B mark on their disabled person's pass may enter the tower free of charge.

No, for structural reasons, it is not possible to install a lift on the south tower of Cologne Cathedral. Visitors access the viewing platform via a spiral staircase and a metal staircase.

Yes, visitors generally pass through Cologne Cathedral's bell chamber, which contains eight of the cathedral's 12 bells, on their way to the viewing platform. If extended bell-ringing is scheduled before a mass (for example on Sundays and feast days before 2.00 p.m.) or in the event of maintenance work, the bell chamber remains closed.

Yes, the Cathedral Works Department offers special tours of the belfry on working days for visitors who would like to experience the ringing of the bells. Visitors taking this tour will be provided with professional hearing protection devices.

Please note the following:

No more than 20 people are allowed on each guided tour of Cologne Cathedral and the Cathedral Treasury.
No more than 12 people are allowed on each guided tour of the roof and excavation area. For these tours, visitors must be at least 16 years of age.

General information on tours in Cologne Cathedral All tours of Cologne Cathedral must be registered in advance. Only authorised or registered cathedral tour guides are permitted to conduct tours inside Cologne Cathedral. In other words, individuals, groups, and travel companies must book a group tour of Cologne Cathedral at the DOMFORUM .

Individual visitors may explore the cathedral by themselves outside Mass times. Tours shall be allocated to available tour slots. A maximum of 10 tours per hour and a maximum of 25 people per group are permitted in the cathedral.

Dear visitors to Cologne Cathedral, We are happy to welcome you to the Cathedral St. Peter at Cologne. This cathedral was built to the glory of God and is to this day, above all, a house of prayer and worship. The cathedral protects the precious relics of the Three Kings. By entering the cathedral, you acknowledge the following rules.

(1) All visitors respect the dignity of this holy place and refrain from loud talking or running.

(2) Sightseeing is generally permitted whenever no service is being celebrated at the main altar in the center of the cathedral

(3) Music and singing outside of services is not permitted.

(4) Parents or adults accompanying children or youth observe their supervisory responsibilities.

(5) Visitors respect closures and areas which are off limits to sightseeing.

(6) Cell phones etc. are to be placed in “silent” mode. Talking on the phone is only permitted outside the cathedral.

(7) Clothing should be appropriate for the house of God. Sleeveless or cropped tops are considered inappropriate as are short shorts or skirts. Men may cover their heads for health or religious reasons. Religiously offensive or racist symbols will not be tolerated.

(8) Food and drink are to be consumed outside the cathedral.

(9) Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is not permitted in the entire cathedral building.

(10) Persons who are visibly drunk may not enter the cathedral.

(11) Drugs of any kind (as defined by the Controlled Substances Act (BtMG)) are forbidden.

(12) Scavenger hunts etc. cannot take place inside the cathedral.

(1) Taking pictures without a flash and recording videos with reasonable technical components is permitted outside of services for private use. During services, it is possible only from one’s place. Respectful cooperation is to be observed in that recordings do not directly contain other visitors. Those taking pictures or making videos must, in any case, respect the dignity of the location and follow the instructions of cathedral personnel.

(2) Private “photo shoots” are forbidden.

(3) Recordings with tripods require the permission of the cathedral provost.

(4) The use of model airplanes and unmanned aircraft (drones) is not permitted in the cathedral or over the property outside.

(5) The publication of pictures or videos for non-private use — i.e. editorial reports, commercial and ideological promotion (including private websites and social media) — must have prior permission.

(1) Luggage should be kept with you at all times. The owner is responsible for costs incurred by storage of luggage. Only luggage the size of a standard carry-on bag (max 55 x 40 x 20 cm) may be brought into the cathedral.

(2) Wheelchairs, rollators and licensed electric wheelchairs are allowed in the cathedral; other wheeled vehicles and bicycles must remain outside.

(3) Weapons (including potential weapons and CS-gas) are prohibited throughout the cathedral.

(4) Folding chairs, stools and the like may not be brought.

(5) Balloons, confetti and streamers are forbidden throughout the cathedral.

Distribution of printed matter requires the express consent of the cathedral provost.

Animals, with the exception of guide-dogs, must remain outside.

(1) Cathedral tours are only possible with a guide licensed for such tours at the cathedral.

(2) Tour participants are to be informed of the cathedral rules.

(1) The instructions of the security personnel and cathedral guards are to be followed at all times.

(2) Persons not following the cathedral rules or the instructions of the staff may be asked to leave.

(3) Cathedral guards do not serve as cathedral guides.

Anyone who’s ever wondered where cologne came from need not worry any more. This type of fragrance is named after Cologne, the German city where it was invented. Germany’s fourth largest city with 1 million residents, was heavily bombed during World War II. As a result, Cologne is a quite modern city, though remnants of its rich history, dating from Roman times, can still be found.

Straddling the banks of the Rhine, this city is one of the most-visited destinations in Germany and there are plenty of great tourist attractions in Cologne, both ancient and new. As well as a colossal cathedral, it has lots of excellent museums, interesting historic sights and top-class eateries to enjoy.

Located in the northwest of Germany, not far from the border of Belgium and the Netherlands, it was founded about 2,000 years ago by the Romans. In Medieval and Renaissance times, Cologne was one of the largest cities in Europe and a valued member of the Hanseatic League. Much of its historical center was sadly destroyed though by fierce bombing during the Second World War.

Pockets of well-preserved buildings still survive here and there however, with Cologne being renowned for its twelve Romanesque churches. Roman ruins, Baroque palaces and the resplendent Rathaus can also be found alongside many art-filled museums.

Now a thriving cultural hub for North Rhine-Westphalia, among the best things to do in Cologne are discovering its magical Christmas Market and fun-filled Karneval. With plenty of cool neighborhoods, stylish pubs and heaving shopping streets to explore, Koln is much more than just its giant cathedral.

23. Hahnentorburg

One of the last remaining parts of the city’s once formidable fortifications is the huge Hahnentorburg on Rudolfplatz. Now a nice photo stop, it was through the gate that royal guests used to pass on their way to the cathedral’s Shrine of the Three Kings.

Once numbering twelve in total, the lovely landmark is now one of just four medieval city gates still standing. Renovated and reconstructed after the Second World War, it was originally built in 1235. Nowadays, two crenellated towers guard the gate’s entrance above which Cologne’s coat of arms is proudly displayed.

After snapping some photos, there are tons of restaurants and bars to try around the surrounding square. While we personally found Severinstor way more impressive, the historic Hahnentorburg was undoubtedly the most important in centuries gone by.

22. Heumarkt

Just one of the city’s many scenic cobbled squares is the atmospheric old Heumarkt in the Altstadt. Famed for its massive Christmas Market, it is lined by countless cosy cafes, cool contemporary brewpubs and enticing restaurants from around the world.

Although the spacious square is mostly bordered by modern buildings, a couple have been restored to their picturesque pre-WWII appearance. In its innumerable eateries, you can sit for a coffee, sip Kolsch beers or sample some traditional German fare. At its center, there is also a superb statue to see of the Prussian King Frederick William III atop his horse.

Heumarkt also hosts many of Cologne’s most popular cultural events and community festivals during the year. These include not just its carnival and Christmas Market but Pride too. In addition, it lies just a stone’s throw from the Great St. Martin Church and Cologne City Hall.

21. St. Gereon Basilica

As the city is renowned for its twelve Romanesque churches, you have to see at least a few when in town. Arguably the most unique and interesting is St. Gereon’s Basilica due to its unusual design and decagonal dome.

Actually built atop the ruins of a Roman chapel, its current appearance mostly dates to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. As it was slowly erected over different stages, the basilica showcases an intriguing mix of architectural styles. Its defining feature is of course its giant dome which was once one of the largest in the Western world.

Aside from admiring the ten-sided structure, you can inspect its medieval murals and long, charming choir. The church’s striking size, shape and serene atmosphere made it one of the best buildings we saw in Cologne.

20. Neptunbad

If after days of sightseeing you want to kick back, relax and unwind, then Neptunbad is one of the best things to do in Cologne. Lying just a fifteen minute bus journey or car ride northwest of the center, the spa has numerous saunas, steam rooms and pools to enjoy.

The oldest bathhouse in town, it was first opened in 1912 to provide the residents of Ehrenfeld with a place to bathe as people didn’t use to have running water at home. Now a spa, the large complex contains an attractive Art Nouveau area and soothing section inspired by Japanese interior design.

Other than soaking in its steaming pools, you can book massages, spa treatments or work up a sweat at the fitness center. There is also a peaceful outdoor area to hang out in and an outstanding on-site restaurant to try. Remember to take a bathrobe and towel with you as spas in Germany tend to be clothing free.

19. Wallraf-Richartz Museum

Home to an amazing collection of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Impressionist artworks is the wonderful Wallraf-Richartz Museum. Located just around the corner from the city hall, all its dramatic old oeuvres really are extraordinary to examine.

Founded in 1824, the museum’s galleries are largely organized around the priceless pieces bequeathed to the city by Franz Ferdinand Wallraf. Of these, the Gothic works painted by the Cologne-based Stefan Lochner in the fifteenth century are among the most eye-catching. Having never heard of him previously, we were really taken by the gorgeous scenes and bright compositions he created. Highlights for us included both his Madonna of the Rose Bower and The Last Judgement.

Besides these beautiful paintings, its three floors display masterpieces by everyone from Degas and Durer to Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Gogh. With so many arresting art pieces to see, we couldn’t recommend the Wallraf-Richartz Museum enough.

18. Phantasialand

Long a firm favorite with families, Phantasialand has lots of fun rides, rollercoasters and games for everyone to enjoy. The super popular theme park can be reached in half an hour’s drive from Cologne center, just past neighboring Bruhl.

Since opening in 1967, its grounds have expanded considerably with there now being six themed worlds to explore. Each part of the park, whether it is Berlin and Mexico or Fantasy and Mystery, has new attractions, foods and shows to discover. Particularly hair-raising rides are the inverted Black Mamba and steampunk-inspired F.L.Y.

As the rollercoasters are great, the queues aren’t too long and the quality of food and entertainment is so good, Phantasialand is often listed amongst the best theme parks on the planet. Although much smaller than Disneyland, its incredibly detailed worlds and exciting performances make it a must for thrill seekers.

17. Fish Market Square

Overlooked by the ginormous tower of Great St. Martin Church is one of the prettiest squares in town. Lined by loads of colourful old buildings, Fish Market Square offers divine views over the Rhine and its delightful bridges.

Due to its setting alongside the river, it is here that fishermen once sold their catch in centuries gone by. Despite suffering heavy bombing in the Second World War, all its Gothic-style structures miraculously survived, with many now being painted in bright colors. Occupying them are a whole host of top-class restaurants and bars to try.

Aside from enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and snapping some photos of their fine facades, you can gaze out over the peaceful river. To either side are the Deutzer and Hohenzollern bridges with relaxing cruises along the Rhine also departing from here.

16. Christmas Market

Other than carnival, one of the best times to explore Cologne is during its enchanting Christmas Market. For one magical month, hundreds of cute chalet-style stands pack almost all the squares and streets surrounding the cathedral.

One of the largest and most well-done in Europe, the very busy Christmas Market now covers an enormous area. Each section is dedicated to a different theme with the one in Rudolfplatz containing the fun, kids-focused Village of Saint Nicholas. Wherever you end up, you’ll find stalls selling Christmas decorations, hot food and art and crafts from all around Europe.

Visitors can also go ice skating, listen to live music performances or sip some strong, hot gluhwein. Special Advent-related river cruises are also put on while people select presents from the city’s bright shop windows. With everything so colorfully lit up and the colossal cathedral’s spires looming above, Cologne really has one of the biggest and best Christmas Markets around.

15. Cologne City Hall

Certainly one of its most important and impressive buildings, Cologne City Hall lies right in the heart of the Altstadt. Since Medieval times, it has acted as the city’s seat of government with the Lord Mayor’s office still based here.

The oldest city hall in Germany still in use, the Rathaus was built in the twelfth century with its Renaissance-style loggia and Gothic-style tower having only been added later on. Coating their exterior are 130 intricately-detailed sculptures, many of which depict influential figures from throughout the city’s history.

Another highlight is the Hansasaal which hosted Hanseatic League meetings and is decorated with stunning statues of prophets and heroes. Depending on the time, you may hear the 48 bells of the joyful glockenspiel in its tower ringing out over the city.

14. Schildergasse

Travelers who love to shop need to visit Schildergasse, the busiest shopping street in Europe. This pedestrian-only street draws about 15,000 shoppers an hour. Running between Hohe Strasse and Neumarkt, the street dates back to Roman times.

Artists painted coats of arms here during the Middle Ages. Located in central Cologne, the street features numerous department and chain stores, and trendy boutiques, including clothing store inside a glass building that is shaped like a whale.

Shoe stores are especially numerous on Schildergasse . Streets around Schildergasse also offer good shopping.

13. Fragrance Museum

Right next to the Rathaus and Wallraf-Richartz is another fantastic museum to check out all about fragrances. It was here back in the early eighteenth century that Eau de Cologne was invented. Informative and engaging tours now cover the invention of the scent, copycat smells and perfume production over the ages.

The oldest intact fragrance factory in the world, it was established by the Italian-born Johann Maria Farina in 1709. Across several floors, guests can now see replicas of old distilleries and the original cellar vaults where all the sweet-smelling scents were produced.

After inspecting all the artifacts on show and hearing stories about Farina, the factory and fragrance production, you actually smell different samples at the end. You’re also handed a thoughtful freebie and can buy gifts in its stylish shop before heading off.

12. Koelner Zoo

Home to all kinds of exotic animals, birds and reptiles is the outstanding Koelner Zoo. One of the oldest in the country, its spacious enclosures and state-of-the-art exhibits occupy romantic-looking menagerie buildings from the nineteenth century.

Despite having been established in 1860, the zoo is amazingly up-to-date with brand new facilities being added all the time. These modern features have been retrofitted into old buildings such as its Moorish-style elephant house and ornate birdhouse. On show are over 10,000 animals including orangutans, gorillas, lions and hippos. There is also an immense Asian elephant park, big cat enclosure and ape island to explore.

As we feel the animals often appear happier and better looked after in Germany, we often include a trip to a zoo if we can. Koelner Zoo was no exception with the elegant old menagerie buildings being an added bonus. Fun feeding sessions and interesting keeper talks also take place all the time.

11. Chocolate Museum

For those with a sweet tooth, the Cologne Chocolate Museum is an absolute must. In addition to tasting some delicious products, terrific tours explain how cocoa beans eventually become chocolate. Its gigantic, glittering facility occupies the very tip of the Rheinau peninsula in the city center.

Once home to the Stollwerck chocolate factory, its big building was bought by Hans Imhoff and turned into a museum in 1972. Its interactive exhibits explain the craft of chocolate making with antique boxes, molds and wrappers all on display. These take you from its origins in Central America 5,000 years ago right up to the present-day.

Guests can even observe its working production line and design their own chocolate bar too. On top of this, samples are often handed out from its giant, three meter-high chocolate fountain. Tasty treats and gifts can also be bought in its huge on-site shop.

10. Gross St. Martin

Gross St. Martin is one of twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne. Thanks to its massive tower, the church is also one of the most imposing. Were it not for the crosses on top, visitors might easily mistake Gross St. Martin as a medieval castle.

The church is considered one of the best looking buildings in Cologne, and is very popular with tourists. The Romanesque church was built between 1150 and 1250, after a fire destroyed the earlier church.

Restored after being heavily damaged in World War if, Gross St. Martin with its trefoil choir still dominates the skyline in Old Town.

9. 4711 Cologne House

The 4711 Cologne House is undoubtedly the prettiest smelling house in Cologne. Located at Glockengasse no. 4, it is the birthplace and flagship store for the most famous brand of eau de cologne (water from Cologne).

The number 4711 refers to a house number assigned during the French occupation at the end of the eighteenth century. Made since 1792, the original fragrance was known as Echt Kölnisch Wasser.

The same formula is still being used today. The ground floor of the house is home to a store selling the famous perfume. On the first floor is a small museum about the history of Cologne 4711.

8. Trip to Augustusburg Palace in Bruhl

When in town, it is well worth taking a trip to the ostentatious Augustusburg Palace in the nearby Brühl. Home to loads of artistic treasures, its stately apartments, halls and gardens are amazing to amble around. Only accessible on guided tours, it lies twenty minutes south of the center by car or public transport.

Certainly one of the finest Rococo creations in the country, the palace was erected by the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne in 1725. Ornately decorated and furnished, its endless rooms each have their own unique theme and color. The highlight though is undoubtedly its majestic main staircase – probably one of the most spectacular rooms we’ve ever seen.

Once you’ve finally managed to take your eyes off all its phenomenal statues, painted ceiling and colourful pillars, you can explore the lovely landscaped garden outside. A combo ticket also includes a visit to the nearby Falkenlust hunting lodge. Every bit as elegant, it too is sumptuously decorated with historic paintings, statues and furniture.

7. Cologne Cable Car

For some of the best views imaginable of the city, take a relaxing ride on the Cologne Cable Car. Known in German as the Rheinseilbahn, it connects the botanical garden and zoo to the enormous green expanse of Rheinpark.

The first cable car in Europe to cross above a river, it was first unveiled in 1957. It has since proved a popular attraction with locals and tourists alike. Now stretching 930 meters in total, it takes six minutes to get from one side of the Rhine to the other.

From the glass windows of its gondolas, you can drink in delightful views of the river, city and Cologne Cathedral in the distance. Other panorama points include its two towers and the Koeln Triangle building’s lofty observation deck.

6. Botanical Gardens Flora

Full of colourful plants, flowers, trees and shrubs, the Botanical Gardens Flora is an absolute treat to stroll around. Immaculately maintained, its lush grounds and lovely greenhouses cover a huge area on the northeastern outskirts of the center.

Nestled alongside the Koelner Zoo, its almost endless lawns and fetching flowerbeds were first opened to the public in 1863. At its center is a glass and iron-clad orangerie modeled on the famous Crystal Palace in London. This creates a beautiful backdrop as you wander its winding paths past ponds, fountains and pergolas.

Amongst its more than 10,000 plant species are the succulents, cacti and ferns in its four exhibition greenhouses. These hail from all around the world with concerts, talks and flower shows all also being held at the scenic botanical gardens.

5. NS Documentation Centre

A very moving place to visit, the NS Documentation Centre covers all the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime in Cologne both before and during the Second World War. A memorial site and research facility, the artifacts, exhibits and individual testimonies make for harrowing viewing.

Actually located in the former headquarters of the Gestapo, it was used from 1935 to 1945 to detain, question, torture and kill thousands of the city’s Jewish citizens. From here, the Nazis projected their power and propaganda and organized the horrors of the Holocaust.

Its well-done displays document the rise of national socialism, its impact on Cologne and aftermath once the war was over. Particularly sobering are the jail cells down in the cellar which are covered in inscriptions left behind by unfortunate prisoners. While it is one of the best museums on the tough topic we’ve been to, make sure to pick up an audio guide as not all the exhibits are translated into English.

4. Romisch-Germanisches Museum

The Romisch-Germanisches Museum may be located in a modern building, but its interior contains parts of original Roman facilities, making it an archeological site as well as a repository for ancient artifacts.

The museum was built so as to protect the site of an old Roman villa. A Dionysius mosaic can be found in the basement, while a section of an old Roman road is outside.

The museum’s mission is to protect Cologne’s Roman heritage, which includes not only facilities but also items such as utensils and tools the Romans used in daily living.

3. Museum Ludwig

As it houses one of Europe’s most important modern art collections, Museum Ludwig really is a must for art aficionados. While its many masterpieces by Picasso normally steal the show, there are plenty of paintings, photos and prints by other famed artists to examine.

Lying alongside the cathedral and river, it occupies part of the modern, purpose-built museum complex constructed in the eighties. Named for Peter and Irene Ludwig who donated their collection, its galleries are mostly dedicated to twentieth century works.

Ambling about, you’ll see awesome pop art and expressionist pieces by Andy Warhol and Erich Heckel among others. With cool installations and creative works wherever you look, it’s well worth spending a couple of hours here if you have the time.

2. Hohenzollern Bridge

Of the seven bridges that cross the Rhine River in Cologne, the Hohenzollern Bridge is the most famous thanks to its location near the cathedral. The construction of the original bridge took place from 1907 to 1911.

In 1945, German military engineers blew up the bridge when Allied troops began their assault on Cologne. Just three years later the bridge was partially repaired and in 1959 the Hohenzollernbrücke was completely reconstructed.

Due to its location near Cologne’s main train station about 1200 trains pass here every day. A pedestrian walkway allows visitors to cross the Rhine for a beautiful view of the skyline of Cologne.

1. Cologne Cathedral

Dominating and defining the city and its skyline are the tall towering twin spires of the colossal Cologne Cathedral. Visible for countless kilometers around, the unmissable, iconic landmark boasts some astounding architecture with its enormous interior being every bit as impressive.

One of the tallest cathedrals in the world, its two towers remarkably stand 157 meters in height. While construction of the hulking great Gothic church started in 1248, it was only completed centuries later in 1880. Beneath its soaring roof supported by elegant pillars, you can now find all kinds of glittering treasures and religious artworks.

The most stupendous is of course the Shrine of the Three Kings which is believed to house the remains of the Three Wise Men. Aside from staring at the sparkling golden reliquary, there are stunning stained-glass windows, crucifixes and altars to admire.

If you clamber up the 530 steps of its spiral staircase, you’re rewarded with sweeping views over the city below. Standing at the foot of the cathedral and looking up is just as dazzling as its tall spires seemingly stretch away forever towards the heavens.

Best Time to Visit Cologne

While April to October is the best time both temperature and weatherwise in Cologne, the city also sees vast crowds visit in February and December. This is when exciting Karneval and Christmas celebrations take place; the two biggest events of the year. During this time, its streets, squares and hotels are packed with prices being at their highest.

Summer is of course another lovely time to explore the city as temperatures hover around a reasonably warm 23°C (73°F). Besides strolling about the center and taking boat trips along the Rhine, you can sit and sip Kolsch in its biergartens or relax in its pretty parks.

Spring and autumn are also pleasant though a bit cooler at between 14 to 20°C (57-68°F). The blooming buds and glittering golden foliage paint Cologne in beautiful colours with loads of people still sightseeing around the Altstadt.

With between 14 to 18 days of rainfall each month, Cologne can be rather drizzly at times. During the colder, greyer months though, the colourful parades, costumes and parties for Christmas and Karneval all bring the festive spirit!

At 154 meters in height, this is the tallest church with twin spires to be found anywhere in the world, and you’ll be impressed by its staggering height when you stand in the square below the cathedral and look upwards.

This is one of Germany’s most beloved and visited tourist attractions, and you’ll love taking a tour through its hallowed halls to learn more about the cathedral’s fascinating past. The cathedral was designed in the Gothic style that was popular across Europe when construction began in the 13th century. Plus, you’ll be intrigued to discover that despite work beginning on the cathedral way back in 1248, it wasn’t officially completed until 1880.

The place to visit in this German city, the Cologne Cathedral really is the number one attraction you can’t miss if you’re exploring here.

UNESCO-listed since 1996 (I’ll go into why a little later on), with a whole heap of accolades to its name (including the world’s tallest twin-sphered church and the largest Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe!), this giant religious structure is quite the sight to behold.

And that’s even more apparent when you step inside it, not to mention when you climb the hundreds of steps to its impressive South Tower outlook.

With an incredible array of historical artefacts and offering amazing views over the historic centre of this city, there’s no question that visiting Cologne Cathedral needs to be on your list if you’re spending any time in this German city.

Why Visit the Cologne Cathedral?

The icon of this city, if I didn’t make it clear in the introduction, then the Cologne cathedral is the number one attraction you need to see here!

Boasting up to 20,000 visitors a day, it’s hardly a secret.. and quite frankly, how could it be?!

Absolutely huge, and looming large as soon as you exit Cologne’s main train station (Koln Hbf) if, by some miracle, you do happen to miss it at first, then you’ll quickly see every trinket in this city, from postcards and keyrings to waffles, stamped with the Cathedral’s unmistakable outline.

Dating back to the 12 th century, the Cologne Cathedral is not only huge therefore, but also ancient.

It’s also the winner of such prestigious titles as ‘the world’s tallest twin-sphered church’, ‘the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe’ and ‘the largest swinging bell in the world’, not to mention it’s home to one of the oldest Biblical-themed stained glass windows in Europe.

Enormous and impressive, hopefully I’ve convinced you that the Cologne Cathedral is a must during your time in this city!

Where is It?

As I mentioned briefly, Cologne Cathedral is located right outside the city’s main train station.

And when I say right outside, I mean it!

Exit the station and you’ll see this Gothic gem towering above just to your right.

For those not arriving into this city by train, the Cathedral is still easy to locate!

Its huge towers are visible from just about anywhere in the city and its entrance can be found right in the heart of the historic old town – the place where you’ll likely be spending most of your time in Cologne.

If you’re still confused, then the Cathedral’s official address is Domkloster 4, 50667 Köln, Germany!

If you see the phrase Kölner Dom flagging up on your Google maps, then you’ve got the right spot. This is just the German name for the Cologne Cathedral.

The entrance of the Cathedral can be reached by walking up the steps to the left side of Cologne’s train station exit.

To reach the entrance to the Cathedral towers, you’ll have to walk around the outside of the building to the opposite side, aka the riverside of the Cathedral.

Here you’ll find the ticket office, a small museum and steps that lead up to the observation deck.

Costs, Access & Opening Times

The Cathedral, as a whole, is open from 6am to 8pm every day, although visiting hours for tourists are generally Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5 pm and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm.

This is to accommodate Sunday mass and other services.

Entering the Cathedral itself is free.

I’ll discuss the highlights of this area more in the next section of this article.

The only part you need to pay to access inside the Cathedral is The Treasury, where entrance costs 6€ full price and 3€ for concessions. There’s also family tickets available for 12€.

The Treasury is open from 10am to 6pm.

Away from the interior of Cologne’s Cathedral, it’s also possible to climb the Southern Tower of this huge religious structure – again, I’ll go into this more later on.

Access to the Tower is available between 9am and 4pm in the winter months, 9am to 6pm in the summer months and 9am to 5pm in the Spring and Autumn months.

It costs 6€ for adults, 3€ for concessions and family tickets are available for 12€.

Guided tours of the Cathedral and Treasury are also available.

Groups are capped at 20 people and tickets can be bought up to 7 days in advance here .

Tours last 45 minutes, cost 10€ for adults (8€ for children and students) and are run every day except Saturday at 3pm.

Special tours of the Cathedral roof, excavation area, the bells and Cologne Cathedral at night are also available and bookable using the above link too.

Group sizes for special tours are capped at 12 people.

Inside the Cathedral

Now that you know where to find the Cathedral and what you can do there, it’s time to discuss some of its highlights, starting inside the Cathedral itself.

Enter the Cathedral using the main street level doors and prepare to be amazed!

Another accolade incoming… this is the second tallest church in Europe!

The nave’s ceiling reaches over 40m tall and is 144m long, making it the longest nave in Germany – BOOM!

Don’t forget to check out the Gothic structures here, including the flying buttresses and spitting gargoyles, as well as the impressive stained glass windows.

Amazingly, the stained glass was removed before the bombing of Cologne during WWII, meaning all these windows are original and some even date back as far as the 14 th century, making them some of the oldest in Europe too.

The shrine of the 3 wise men (the guys from the Nativity story) can also be found inside Cologne Cathedral.

Thought to be the original reason this religious building was constructed, the relics of the 3 Biblical Magi were bought to Cologne in 1164.

Now located in a gold case that sits on the High Altar, this is the jewel in Cologne Cathedral’s crown.

And finally, we have the Cathedral Treasury.

Containing holy relics, as well as bronze, silver, and gold artworks – there’s an additional fee to get into the Treasury as I mentioned in the section above.

Climbing the Cologne Cathedral

But now we come to the most fun part in my opinion, climbing the Cathedral’s Southern Tower!

As mentioned, you’ll need to exit the Cathedral’s main doors and walk around to the opposite side of the building to find the tower access point.

There’s toilet facilities here too, as well as a small gift shop and exhibition space.

Enter and pay for your tower access at the desk… and then begin the climb!

But be warned… it’s a hefty 533 steps up to the viewing platform via a tiny spiral staircase. And there’s only one point to rest about 2 thirds of the way up!

Do not attempt this climb if you are not in good health or suffer from claustrophobia.

If you do decide to go for it, then strap in for at least 15 minutes of going up and up, round and round, as you make your way up to the 157m summit.

The final part of the climb involves walking on a constructed wooden staircase, rather than stone steps, so if heights aren’t your thing either, you may want to reconsider too!

And then, you’ve finally made it, up to the Tower for great views across Cologne’s skyline.

Sadly, safety netting does obscure the view in part, but it’s still a pretty impressive outlook.

Because the walk here is narrow and one-way, it does make sense to not rush your time at the top, so you can ensure you take in the whole 300 degree view and stop for any snaps to avoid doubling back on yourself.

I highly recommend climbing Cathedral Cathedral in the morning if possible, as this will give you the best lights for your photos.

When climbing down, you have to use the same staircases to navigate on the way out too.

Prepare to get dizzy!

History of Cologne Cathedral

And now, for all you keen beans out there, here’s a brief word about the history of Cologne Cathedral… I’ll keep it snappy because no one like a boring history lesson do they!

Construction began on the Cathedral you see today in 1248 (although there had been a church on the same site since the 4 th century).

The impetus behind this was believed to be the 3 Wise Men relics, which had been bought from Italy to Cologne by Archbishop Rainald von Dassel.

After all, 3 kings deserve a decent home right?!

Work started soon after this, but a fire burnt the building down, so work began again in 1248.

However, it was not until 1880 that the whole Cathedral was finally complete, with the 2 Towers being the last finished parts.

Such delays were caused by a multitude of hiccups, including lack of funding and rumours of one architect making a deal with the devil, but things finally smoothed out and the 19 th century Romantics eventually got their act together and finished the job!

WWII caused a bit of havoc, with Cologne’s Cathedral being bombed no less than 14 times, but thankfully the stained glass windows had been removed as I’ve mentioned.

Renovation work on the Cathedral is ongoing and even to this day, a team of around 80 to 100 people work consistently on the building to keep it safe and secure for future generations.

I definitely recommend visiting Cologne in the summer months of June through September, when the warm weather will give the best take on this city and the views from the Cologne Cathedral.

The other great time to visit is during December, when the famous Germans Christmas markets of this city are in full flow!

The international Cologne Bonn Airport is the best place to fly into if you’re travelling from further afield.

Wow, we were fortunate to tour the Dom cathedral in 1966 at that time the steps started inside, and charge was 25 cents, one mark. We were stationed at Bitburg Air Force base. What a great time went to Bonn where they had a Woolwrths, and of course American Embassy. What wonderful memories.
