Excellent day out ! Recommend the Safari Bus

We spent an excellent day at Longleat, 4 x adults & 2 x 8 year olds had a brilliant time ! We took Safari Bus which was an extra £4 pp but the driver (Paul) was informative, funny, knew lots about the animals and their background, names, where they are from etc. he knew where they had their favourite hiding places etc. the bus is able to take short cuts etc. that a car can't take and it is much more fun watching the monkeys wrecking other peoples cars !! Bus needs air con though as it does get warm on there ! Also good was the Jungle Cruise, train, Stingray Bay. Lots to do and see. Food is usual overpriced stodge you always get at a theme park, but take a picnic and sit on the lovely grounds by the house for better value.

A brIlliant day out - so much to see & do, it's not just about the safari park, which is outstanding. We bought our tickets in advanced which saved us 15% but I would have been happy with the full price as it's such a packed day. This is by far the best place to see animal up close, & they all seem to be well cared for & not stressed out, which is great to see. We went on a Saturday during the school holidays & expected it to be mega busy, although the car park looked fairly full, because of the size of the park plus the added attractions, we never had to wait for more than 15minutes & we managed to see everything. There is so much interaction with the animals too, which was fantastic, we walked with the penguins, marmosets & meerkats, fed parrots, stroked a sting ray & held a snake. We shall definitely be back again - but next time we'll do the two day ticket

I visited Longleat on Saturday and had a fantastic time. We got a VIP tour with Steve who was amazing- friendly and very knowledgeable. Our whole party were very impressed with him and the level of commitment and care the Longleat team show the animals. The VIP tour means you can get closer to the animals and get all the inside knowledge about the animals and stories about their lives from an expert. We spent the rest of the day going around the park which was incredible. From feeding sealions on the boat ride to watching an awe inspiring vulture and falcon show. I also held a tarantula, handled a royal python and stroked a stingray. In the meercat area they are wondering around you happy as can be. The bat cave lets you get very close to the bats which was fascinating. The Scottish man on the boat was brilliant and gave some great information and stories about Niko the silverback, the hippos and the sealions. What made me so happy was seeing how happy and relaxed all of the animals were. They are so well taken care of. I fell in love with the baby giraffe- so adorable. I will never forget my day at Longleat. Next time I will be doing the giraffe feeding VIP experience. Longleat impressed me and if you are an animal lover it will impress you too. Go and book your tickets now!! I can't wait to go back.

We had Tesco vouchers for this day out, probably wouldn't have gone at full price, but now we have been I think its pricing compares very well to places like Alton towers. We started the day at 10.30 with the on foot attractions at the recommendation of the lady on the gate. Unfortunately one of the river boats was not running so the queue was large and we gave this a miss. However everything else we did was very good. A large hedge maze, the action challenge (a bit like crystal maze), the animal area with penguins etc. We watched a parrot show and stroked the stingrays and the kids had a great time on the large outdoor play area. We had pizza for lunch which was excellent and good value then finally managed to get to the safari park area about 4pm having missed out some of the other attractions. They give you an informative Cd which was great and all the animals were easy to see and mostly very close. We had a very enjoyable ride round, except for the monkey area. They do warn you about possible damage to your car, but we never imagined that the monkeys would remove & eat the reversing sensors on our sons car! Quite an expense to replace. I advise you to weigh it up very carefully if you want to go in the monkey area. we could have spent a lot longer at the attraction as a whole - it is definitely a full day out.

Six of us travelled to Longleat for the day with ages ranging from 9 to over 60 years young and everyone really enjoyed the day. We started in the Maze and had a fantastic time getting VERY lost but did eventually find the middle!. I would highly recommend taking a picnic as it is such a beautiful area especially on a sunny day to sit and enjoy the scenery. We went in the house for the first time and it is utterly beautiful (dare I say nicer than Highclere Castle!) The children loved seeing declarations dating back to the 1600s and the waistcoat King Charles 1 was beheaded in! The ceilings are utterly beautiful and there wasn't much in each room that was roped off which was nice and there was always someone there to answer any questions we had. The trip wouldn't have been complete without a drive through the Safari Park where the Monkeys kept the children (and us adults) highly entertained while they tried to take anything they could off our car !. The only downside is the price as it is quite expensive and they don't do family tickets so I would highly recommend a visit but do look on the internet first for any ticket deals.

Have gone to Longleat every year for the past 5 years and always loved it, apart from last year when they got the Penguins. ..such a small area to keep them in, horrid. Expected so much more at Longleat. Will not return.

Take the safari bus!!!!

Great day out, found the safari drive through quite stressful, people just stopping dead in front of you, no enjoyment for the driver as constantly having to look out for others, and the monkey drive through was awful at the time, washer jets ripped out, aerial chewed and caps on number plate screws pulled off, for a fiver each I would recommend the safari bus everyone can enjoy the animals with no stress or damage, the rest of the park was great as was the visit to the house. Overall a great day out had by all.

The park is fantastic, as pretty much everyone says. We had a wheelchair user and was able to access everything apart from the maze, which we had been told about before we arrived, so perfect. Food and drink is expensive. I would suggest bringing your own picnic. There is no water fountains and selection for health food is very limited, if that is what you are looking. My complaint regards the Chameleon Tree restaurant. Overpriced, but I expected that, yet it was the inflexibility that annoyed me. They were offering a beef brisket chill with rice and tortilla chips. I find rice too difficult to digest as it bloats me, so I asked if I could swap the rice and tortilla chips for some chips. No was the answer. So I bought both and left the rice and tortilla chips. The chilli was bland and the chips were cold. Huge disappointment.

Dear Dwain_Pipe, Thank you for taking the time to complete a Trip Advisor review. We appreciate you taking the time and trouble to share your thoughts as we always consider any feedback that helps us to improve the service we provide for our guests. We’re disappointed to read that you were unhappy with your meal at our Chameleon Tree Restaurant. We do hope this did not deter too much from your experience and we hope to see you again where with us soon. Kind regards, Fred Guest Services.

Not only are the ticket prices horrendous - you then still have to sit bumper to bumper on safari (school day Monday so off peak). Feeding animals great fun - until midday when animals are full but hey, Longleat are taking your money so will still sell you more food. And why is not everything included? Pay extra for safari bus or have your car trashed by monkeys or not see monkeys at all? Ok, let's pay - sorry fully booked and we only have places left reserved for motorhomes and softtop cars - not you! Far too expensive - I am a mere mortal who has saved hard for this day but it is diointingly expensive.

Dear Normalfamilyjustme, Thank you for taking the time to complete a Trip Advisor review. We appreciate you taking the time and trouble to share your thoughts as we always consider any feedback that helps us to improve the service we provide for our guests. We’re disappointed to read that you were unhappy with your visit to Longleat I am sorry to read that you found the ticket price expensive. We have an 8 mile safari drive through with a number of animals available to see, our Longleat House to learn of the rich history, our Rocking Rhino ride, Mirror Maze, Hedge Maze, food outlets, the Longleat Railway, further animals down on the park in our Animal Adventure areas and the boat where guests have the opportunity to meet our Sea Lions and see monkey island, our Hippos and Gorillas. We hope this is reflected in the ticket price; however we do offer discounted tickets when booking from our website to ensure we cater for a range of budgets. We do hope to see you here with us again soon. Kind regards, Fred Guest Services.

i'd been wanting to visit longleat for a long time so when i discovered an organised trip, i booked straight away. i'm so glad i did because it lived up to what i had expected. the safari was most enjoyable. it was a beautiful sunny day and i got to take lots of photos of all of the animals both on safari and elsewhere in the park. my favourites were the meerkats! :) as well as the safari, the park has so much to offer. we had a wander and got lost in the hedge maze, enjoyed a cream tea in the orangery next to longleat house which we also visited and a took a little train journey around the lake. the only thing we didn't get to do was the jungle cruise but it's an excuse to go back again as i would definitely like to return in the future.

Well, what a wonderful weekend away this turned out to be! Starting off with access and parking, this was made so easy by all the attendants present. They were happy to tell us all about where we could park, what would be closest to different points and all the extras we should go and sort before it got busy. I would definitely recommend doing the bus trip through the safari (unless you mind the monkeys pulling off the rubber trim or your windscreen washers). The day we went they were running at 11am, 12pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm and cost us an extra £5 each. It's so worth it to avoid the potential cost of damage to your car that you could end up paying for (but book as soon as you get there as they will fill up fast). The bus trip lasted around 2hours with a great guide and also had a stop off at a couple points for you to take photos or go and see some animal enclosures. This will take you all the way through the safari, so don't worry about missing anything if you don't take your own car! The jungle cruise through the lake was amazing, but the queues got really bad through the day so it's best to start queueing as soon as you get there. They run every 20 minutes and you get to see the sea lions, gorilla's and much more. You can even pay £1 for a pot of fish and feed the sea lions which was so enjoyable. They come right up to the boat and are so fun to watch. As for the rest of the animals in Longleat, it is so well set out and maintained. Plenty of maps around for you so you don't miss anything. There are always attendants roaming around so if you have any questions, they are happy to answer them. My personal favourite were the parrots! From the macaws to cockatoos, they are truly amazing creatures. There are a number of bird shows running through the day showing the skills and tricks they learn and what personalities they have. Luckily, we caught the weekend of the food market which was great. Such a variety of things to eat and drink, with added music performances included on the stage. We also enjoyed the tour of the house and gardens. It would be worth buying a two day ticket if you're able to stay in the area as the animals at Longleat easily take up a full day on their own. The house has so much history relating to the families that owned it. The gardens are so well maintained and the added cafe in the middle allowed us to enjoy them, even when it got too hot. So much for young children to do too, and plenty of places to eat/drink in the shade. Weather dependent, there are many grassed areas for you to have a picnic too because it can work out rather expensive if there are a few of you eating here. One more added point; take plenty of change and withdraw money before you come here. With so many extras costing just a couple pound, it could be easy to miss out if getting change back was an issue. Also, we managed to find one cash machine on site, and the queues for this got bad during the day. Better to be safe than sorry.

I thought longleat was a really pleasant place for a day out. We got there around 10.30 and started by main square by visiting all the animal discovery areas. These seemed really well maintained and the animals well cared for, also the keepers had great knowledge and interesting information about their animals. Although it was a warm day, there was plenty of space and no queuing required on the jungle cruise or train. After a really excellent lunch at pizza piazza (freshly cooked and quite reasonably priced) we had a quick look around the house and header for the safari. This was again very good, especially the giraffes and there was much hilarity in the monkey area. Again the animals seemed well cared for, with plenty of space. Overall enjoyable day. Recommended.

A lion laying down on the grass at the safari

The Festival of Lights takes place in November.

A lion laying down on the grass at the safari

Longleat was the first safari park outside Africa and remains one of Britain’s top family days out, with sprawling, drive-through enclosures that are home to lions, tigers, giraffe, hippo and the park’s shyest residents – a family of cheetahs. Visitors can drive their own cars, or take the safari bus, which operates a 1.5-hour guided tour through the park.

The Market Square area is home to a range of animal enclosures, including the Jungle Kingdom, which has a walk-through meerkat enclosure, Koala Creek and giant otters and crocodiles. Every day there are live shows and the chance to get up close with some of the smaller, tamer species.

Getting there & doing it

It takes about 2-2.5 hours to drive from London to Longleat. Trains from Paddington stop at Westbury (1.5 hours), which is 12 miles from Longleat (taxis are available at the station).

When to do it

The park is open from early March to early November, seven days a week. Christmas is a great time to visit, with a super Santa’s Grotto accessed by a magical train ride.
