The Players to Watch at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic

Here are five golfers to keep an eye on at this first Rolex Series tournament of the year.

A golfer tees off as people watch from the sidelines and the Dubai skyline looms in the distance.

By Michael Arkush

The DP World Tour’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic , which begins on Thursday at the Emirates Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates, has delivered big-name champions over the past 35 years, including Tiger Woods, Seve Ballesteros, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie, Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy.

Will another marquee player walk off with the trophy this time around? Or will someone less heralded emerge from the pack to make an early statement in 2024?

Here are five noteworthy golfers:

Brian Harman

We’ll find out in the coming months whether Harman’s surprising victory in last year’s British Open, winning by six strokes at Royal Liverpool, was a fluke or if he’s able to prove that he truly is one of the game’s top players.

Harman, who turns 37 on Friday, tied for fifth at the PGA Tour’s season-opening Sentry tournament this month in Hawaii and tied for 18th a week later at the Sony Open.

“I’m excited to tee it up in Dubai for the first time,” he said in December . “It looks like a stunning venue that has identified great champions. I’d love to add my name to that list.”

The Open triumph couldn’t have come at a better time. Harman, with only two victories since joining the tour in 2012, had seemed to lose confidence.

“Earlier this year,” he admitted in 2023 , “I was asking my agent about announcing jobs already. So we all get there, we all have those thoughts. Everyone’s in a place that we operated on these razor-thin margins.”

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy, believe it or not, will turn 35 years old in May. He turned pro when he was 18.

Even harder to comprehend is that his drought in major championships is approaching a full decade, his last coming in the 2014 P.G.A. Championship.

He’s bound to pick up another major sooner or later. Isn’t he?

McIlroy, ranked No. 2 in the world, has won the Dubai event three times, including last year when he birdied the final two holes to edge Patrick Reed by a stroke. “It’s a great start to the year,” McIlroy said at the time, “and a really good foundation to work from.”

He won, however, only one more tournament in 2023, the Genesis Scottish Open in July, when he again birdied the final two holes to outduel Robert MacIntyre.

How McIlroy, who squandered an excellent opportunity to win last week’s Dubai Invitational, will be judged in 2024 will depend on how he performs in the four majors. In 2023, he missed the cut in the Masters, but recorded a top 10 in the next three, including a second-place finish in the United States Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Joaquin Niemann

Niemann , 25, is playing for a lot more than this week.

He is playing to qualify for the Masters Tournament.

To accomplish that, Niemann, who is currently ranked at No. 70, will have to be 50th or better during the week before the Masters in April. He tied for 16th at the event last year.

Niemann, a member of LIV Golf, in which players receive no ranking points for LIV events, had fallen to No. 87 until he finished fifth last month in the Fortinet Australian PGA Championship and won the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in a playoff over Rikuya Hoshino, which qualified him for the event in Dubai. He started the final round four behind Hoshino, but closed with a 66.

“This season wasn’t the best for me,” he told the media. “I wanted to play more golf. It was huge to come up here and play good golf and get a result.”

Niemann, the top-ranked amateur in the world for 44 weeks in 2017 and 2018, has won twice on the PGA Tour, including the Genesis Invitational in 2022. He joined LIV in summer 2022.

Cameron Young

Young, ranked No. 25, has been very impressive in his first two seasons on the PGA Tour with 12 top 10s. Four of the top 10s came in major championships.

Still, there has been one thing missing: a victory.

In the 2021-2022 season, Young, 26, finished second on five occasions, including in the British Open on the Old Course at St. Andrews and was the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year.

In 2023, he lost to Sam Burns in the final of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas.

“There might not have been anybody beating him today the way he played,” said Young, who was 41 under par for the week.

Young, whose father was the head professional at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., shot a 74 in the third round of the Sentry event this month, but rebounded the next day with a 65 to finish in a tie for 33rd.

Padraig Harrington

It is safe to assume that three-time major champion Harrington, 52, won’t make a serious run at the title. He hasn’t won on the DP World Tour since 2016.

On the other hand, Harrington has played well since turning 50. In 2023, he made the cut in three of the four majors, his best finish a tie for 27th at the U.S. Open. On the PGA Tour Champions, a senior tour, he posted 10 top 10s last year in 13 appearances, including victories at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Open and TimberTech Championship. There was even talk in the media of him being a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup in Rome.

“I needed to push forward,” Harrington said in August, “but I just think I haven’t played enough events to give myself a better [chance].”

Harrington didn’t give himself much of a chance at last year’s Desert Classic in Dubai. He opened with an 81.

“It was one of those days,” he said afterward. “You get them hopefully only once a year when you are a bit of a klutz all day.” Harrington, who has three top 10s in Dubai, rebounded with a 65 on day two, but missed the cut.

DP World Tour and Emirates Golf Federation announce long-term UAE partnership until 2031

The DP World Tour and the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) today announced a long-term partnership aimed at developing golf in the United Arab Emirates for at least the next decade.

The two organisations will collaborate across all levels of the sport in the UAE, from grassroots initiatives right through to the professional game, building on the Tour’s long-term association with the region which dates back to 1989.

Today’s announcement includes a commitment to investing in a minimum of two Challenge Tour events in the country annually from 2023. There will be 30 spots in each of those tournaments allocated to the Emirates Golf Federation to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for Emirati golfers.

The partnership also includes an expansion of the Tour’s support of junior golf development in the UAE, working together with the Emirates Golf Foundation to help enhance its grassroots and player performance programmes.

The European Tour group, which incorporates the DP World Tour, Challenge Tour and Legends Tour, first visited the UAE in 1989 for the Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club.

Since then, the European Tour group has enjoyed a strong and enduring relationship with the UAE, which was underlined last November when DP World, the Dubai-headquartered provider of global smart end-to-end supply chain and logistics solutions, was named as the title sponsor of the group’s main Tour.

Alongside a record total prize fund for 2022 and minimum purses of US$2million for each solely sanctioned DP World Tour event, that announcement also promised an enhanced commitment to grassroots golf, particularly in the UAE, and significant investment in the Challenge Tour.

Tom Phillips, the European Tour group’s Head of Middle East, said: “Our special partnership with the Emirates Golf Foundation not only demonstrates the DP World Tour’s long-term commitment to developing golf in the United Arab Emirates, but also reflects the strength of the many relationships we enjoy in the country.

“We are delighted to confirm this partnership following our four hugely successful weeks in the UAE at the start of the year, delivering on the pledges we made at the launch of the DP World Tour in November.”

General Abdullah Alhashmi, Vice-Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation, said: “We have been working with the Tour for more than 30 years and with DP World’s involvement now with the Tour, it became even more important for us to work together for the future of golf in this region.

“This partnership will take us to the next level. Having two Challenge Tour events is an important part of this so we can exchange spots with other federations and take our players abroad. That is part of our vision to develop golf here and develop our players to compete in the professional game.

“Hopefully one day we will have a winner on the DP World Tour, but we need the gradual progress, and taking our players step by step through the Challenge Tour first is important. It will provide tournaments in this region to give players from the Arab world the chance to play at a higher level and compete against other players from different countries.”

Ahmed Skaik

Ahmad Skaik, the UAE’s Number One player and a product of the Emirates Golf Federation’s junior golf development programme, said: “This is a very important partnership. It is great that the Tour and EGF are working together to give us more opportunities and to inspire the younger generations.

“It’s very good for the region and I am very excited about the future. For me, I am going to try to take every opportunity possible and play as many events as I can to get better and better.”

Rafa Cabrera Bello, the Ryder Cup player and four-time DP World Tour winner, added: “I’ve been living in Dubai for more than six years now and I’ve been collaborating with the EGF on a number of different things to help to grow the game in the region. My door is always open to help.

“Over the last 15 years since I’ve been coming to the UAE with the Tour, I’ve seen the courses get better and better, the events get bigger and bigger with more and more top names playing in them. So, we are getting it right and it’s just a matter of time before we see a top player come from the UAE. They have all the facilities and infrastructure, and golf is becoming more and more popular with the kids.

“The EGF is trying to support that rise as much as possible and to have this partnership with the DP World Tour can only be a good thing and it will help grow golf in the region.”

This year, the DP World Tour will play five tournaments in the UAE in 2022, including three out of the five Rolex Series events.

Thomas Pieters and Viktor Hovland triumphed in the first two of these, winning the $8million Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic respectively, before two consecutive events at Al Hamra Golf Club in Ras Al Khaimah – the Ras Al Khaimah Championship, won by Nicolai Højgaard, and the Ras Al Khaimah Classic, won by Ryan Fox – marked the Tour’s first visit to that Emirate, building on the Challenge Tour events held there from 2016-2018.

The 2022 season will conclude in Dubai from November 17-20 with the final Rolex Series event of the year, the DP World Tour Championship, which will become the Tour’s first event outside the Majors and WGCs to feature a US$10million prize fund.

Pete Cowen Academy to finally get dedicated facility at Emirates Golf Club

Twenty-two years after launching, the Peter Cowen Academy at Emirates Golf Club is finally set to get its own dedicated facility.

The Master PGA Professional’s name has been synonymous with Dubai since opening his first international location of his Academy at the prestigious club back in 2002.

Fellow Dubai Golf venues, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club and Jumeirah Golf Estates, followed suit in recent years, although the latter was later replaced with the Tommy Fleetwood Academy in 2022.

Despite his long-term association with the club, the Emirates Golf Club location never had its own dedicated facility…until now.

“We’re finally building an academy building at Emirates Golf Club, which will be open in August,” said Chris May, Dubai Golf CEO, in a wide-ranging interview with Gulf News to celebrate his 25 years at Dubai Golf.

“We're going to be bringing Pete over to open that in probably late September, early October.

“It’s probably 35 years too late, but better late than never!”

Cowen is one of the most sought-after coaches in the game and has shared his words of wisdom with many of the game’s greatest players.

To date, he has achieved over 200 DP World Tour and PGA Tour victories and numerous Major Championships as a coach for the likes of Brooks Koepka, Henrik Stenson, Louis Oosthuizen and Graeme McDowell.

The Academy’s professionals in Dubai also benefit from his coaching methods, with the legendary coach regularly making trips over to the Emirate to guide the pros through his latest teaching techniques.

“He is regarded as without doubt one of the best coaches in the world, who has coached many of the best players and still coaches many of the best players,” added May.

“For our team to have exposure to Pete, and be connected with him, at any time, is great.

“He will be messaging them daily with videos of what he's working on with some of the best players of the world. They can then pass that on to their students here.

“Our relationship with Pete and his influence on our coaches and our team is really significant.

“I think it’s really important to ensure that our coaches are able to deliver lessons that are relevant to anyone at any level to encourage them to play more golf.

“Although Pete coaches the very best, he actually makes his approach quite simple, which Is really important.

“We're very fortunate to have Pete involved with us and and we look forward to finally having an academy building to operate out of at Emirates Golf Club. It’s going to be great.”

The launch of the new facility will also see the return of one of the UAE’s most recognisable and reputable teaching professionals – Stephen Deane.

Deane, Head International Development Coach at Dubai Golf, spent 12 years at Emirates Golf Club before moving to Jumeirah Golf Estates to help lead the way when they opened their own Peter Cowen Academy.

But now, the Northern Irishman, who has developed a close relationship with Cowen over the years, is set to return to Emirates Golf Club when the new building opens later this year.

“Stephen Deane, one of our most senior professionals, is going to come back and be based at Emirates Golf Club,” said May.

“He will be assisting Pete to educate all our pros across Abu Dhabi and Dubai in Pete's methods, whatever Pete's working on.

“Pete obviously travels a lot so can’t be in Dubai all the time, so Stephen and Alistair Brown will have a key role in delivering Pete’s message a little bit more frequently than perhaps we've been doing in the past.

“They will ensure that everyone at all of our clubs is a little bit more up to speed of what's new, what's happening and different methods to try and achieve improving someone's game.”

Pete Cowen is considered one of the best coaches in the game

Tadej Pogacar claimed the Tour de France overall lead with a late attack in Sunday's second stage, though the Slovenian may have been surprised by how easily defending champion Jonas Vingegaard followed him despite his recent lack of racing.

While the 2020 and 2021 Tour winner's lightning attack on the ascent of San Luca left fellow favourites Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel seemingly glued to the road, Vingegaard had no trouble keeping up despite entering the race having not competed since he sustained a collapsed lung in a crash almost three months ago.

"Jonas was on my wheel, we can see he's already in great shape. It's going to be very interesting," said Pogacar, who is looking to become the first rider to win the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same year since the late Marco Pantani in 1998.

While Pogacar will be hoping not to fade over the three weeks of the race after riding the Giro in May, Vingegaard is looking to improve and keep some freshness for the final week.

Tour debutant Kevin Vauquelin was the second French winner in the first two days after being the best of the breakaway in the ascent to San Luca (1.9km at 10.6%) as he gave his Arkea-B&B Hotels team their first win in the race.

Romain Bardet, who started the day in the leader's yellow jersey, finished 21 seconds behind Pogacar to lose the overall lead by six seconds while Evenepoel eventually managed to bridge the gap with Vingegaard and his rival.

"There was a little gap in the middle of the climb and I was not well positioned, my bad, " said Evenepoel, who had Ecuador's Richard Carapaz in his slipstream as he battled back to avoid any losses.

Overall, Pogacar leads Belgian Evenepoel and Vingegaard of Denmark, who are second and third, respectively, on added places with no time difference. Roglic is now 21 seconds down on Pogacar.

Eleven riders broke away early but none of them posed a threat to Bardet's yellow jersey.

They opened a 10-minute gap and it became quickly obvious that they would battle it out for the stage win despite a late acceleration from the peloton.

In the leading group, Frenchmen Jordan Jegat and Axel Laurance attacked on the San Luca climb in a stadium-like, deafening atmosphere.

It was the first of two ascents to San Luca up alongside the Portico which features 666 arches.

Vauquelin, Norwegian Jonas Abrahamsen and Nelson Oliveira of Portugal broke free in the flat part leading to the bottom of San Luca.

The Frenchman then upped the pace right away and did not look back. Abrahamsen took second place with another Frenchman, Quentin Pacher, finishing third.

"I've had so many tough times, in training, at the Tour de Suisse, at the French championships, and yesterday I got dropped, I was a bit at the end of my tether," Vauquelin said.

"But I had a sense of revenge and I knew the wheel was going to turn. I turned quickly."

Monday's third stage, a 230.8-km ride between Piacenza and Turin, is expected to favour the sprint specialists.
