Our Catamaran

Prince of Whales operates two custom-built catamarans for whale watching tours. The Salish Sea Dream and The Salish Sea Eclipse. Both vessels are designed to be environmentally friendly, comfortable and fast.

The catamarans are designed to minimize their impact on the marine environment and wildlife. They use low-emission engines, hydrofoil technology, and advanced hull design to reduce fuel consumption and noise pollution. • For Groups 20+: 21 days before scheduled departure; partial or whole cancellations made within 21 days before departure will be charged 100% of the tour price. Tour amendments cannot be guaranteed within the 21-day window.

Prepare for Adventure

It gets cold out on the water (trust us!), so we recommend  windbreaker jackets, sweaters, long pants, and closed-toe shoes . It’s also a good idea to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a tight-fitting hat, a camera to capture some memorable moments and, above all, your sense of adventure!

Do tours run in all types of weather?

Tours operate rain or shine! Safety is our priority and, in extreme weather conditions or high winds, adventures may be cancelled at the discretion of our qualified crew. We will be in touch should this be the case.

Are there bathrooms on the boat?

The boat we use for this tour is equipped with two airline-style washrooms.

Do passengers often feel seasick?

No, our boats are custom-built for whale watching with passengers in mind. Captain and crew will also do their best to minimize the impact of the sea. However, if you are prone to seasickness, we recommend you purchase non-drowsy Gravol from a pharmacy prior to your adventure with us.

Do I need to make a reservation?

Reservations are definitely recommended. Adventures often sell out and we don’t want you to be disappointed.

Is there parking on the premises?

While there is pay-parking on Granville Island, it fills up very quickly! We recommend to allot more time to park before your check-in time, as the parking lot between 10:00 am to 6:00 pm might be already full.

Where: Mashpee High School, Mashpee MA

Insider's Tip: This fireworks display is a highlight of the annual Mashpee Community Picnic. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with games, food, music and entertainment for the whole family.

Sandwich, MA When: June 29, 2024

Where:   Henry T. Wing School

Time: 9:00 p.m. Insider's Tip: There'll be live music by The Moonlighters from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Orleans, MA

When: July 2, 2024

Where: Rock Harbor

Insider's Tip: You can also see the Rock Harbor fireworks display from nearby Skaket Beach. The Cape Cod Bay beaches in Brewster and Eastham offer views of the big boomers, too. They'll be off at a distance, but still fun to see.

Chatham, MA

Where: Veterans Field, Chatham, MA

Time: Around 9:00 p.m.

Insider's Tip : Make an evening of it! Children's activities start at 6 p.m., followed by the fireworks display at dusk. Lots of fun for the whole family!

Falmouth, MA

Insider's Tip: Do you have a portable radio? Be sure to bring it with you, and tune to PIXY 103 (102.9 FM) to hear the music that accompanies the fireworks.

Be sure to check out Falmouth PD's parking and road closure info before you go, and plan accordingly!

*Important: To protect the piping plovers and nesting terns that are currently nesting in Falmouth's south-facing beaches, the following rules have been put into place for fireworks viewing:

• No dogs allowed on the beaches along Surf Drive;
• Respect the fencing and signage along Surf Drive;
• Stay out of fenced-in areas along Surf Drive
• Respect and follow the directions of the Mass Audubon monitors and Town Staff.

Provincetown, MA

When:  July 4, 2024

Where: Provincetown Harbor

Hyannis, MA

Where: Lewis Bay

Time: Just after dusk (around 8 p.m.)

Insider's Tip: The best viewing spots are the beaches around Hyannis Harbor (especially Veterans and Kalmus) and on the West Yarmouth beaches along Lewis Bay.

Pack a picnic basket for dinner and stake out your spot in late afternoon. Or have a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant, then walk to the beach for the fireworks show. (Don't forget your cover-up clothes. It gets chilly on the beach after sunset!)

West Dennis Beach Bonfire & Fireworks

When: September 1, 2024 around dusk

Where: West Dennis Beach, West Dennis, MA

More Info: Dennis Chamber of Commerce This family friendly evening at West Dennis Beach begins at 6 p.m. with music, a beach bonfire and marshmallow roasting, followed by the big fireworks display at dusk. The fireworks can also be seen from nearby beaches including Smugglers Beach in South Yarmouth.

Yarmouth Seaside Festival Fireworks

When: October 13, 2024, at dark

Where: Seagull Beach, West Yarmouth, MA

More Info: Yarmouth Seaside Festival Yarmouth Seaside Festival is the "last hurrah" of the season in the town of Yarmouth. This popular annual Columbus Day weekend event features all sorts of activities including a huge crafts fair, canoe and kayak races, beach activities ... and the big fireworks display over Seagull Beach.

On warm summer evenings by the ocean, the sand is damp and gnats come out at dusk.

Bug Repellant Wipes

Why is it that the best fireworks weather (a warm summer evening with no wind) just happens to be the buggiest weather, too? Bummer! For years, I relied on a popular skin softener to keep me bite-free. Then a fishing buddy turned me on to Repel, and I became a convert.

 A quick once-over with this stuff repels all sorts of bugs for hours. The wipes are very handy to carry, too. Just stick 'em in your pocket and go!

From big cities to small towns, see the most spectacular July 4th firework displays

Small towns and big cities around the country will mark the 247th birthday of the United States of America by putting on bigger and better firework shows.

For many Americans today, fireworks are often accompanied with a day of other Fourth of July related activities, but the tradition of sending bright flares into the sky has been around since the very first Independence Day in 1776, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association (APA).

“Early U.S. settlers brought their love of fireworks with them … a tradition that continues every 4th of July when we celebrate as John Adams had hoped, ‘with pomp, parade….bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other,’” APA’s website states.  

Out of all the dazzling firework displays in the nation, here are 10 spectacular shows, including some lesser known gems.

Framed by the iconic Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular – dubbed "America's biggest birthday party" – boasts a “world-class” display, typically lasting 20 to 30 minutes, over the Mississippi River.

Now in its 140th year, the 2023 Fourth of July show is accompanied by a parade earlier in the day, which is themed “A Better Community for All,” according to St. Louis Magazine. The best place to view the fireworks is on  the grounds of the Gateway Arch , the outlet reported.

Washington D.C.

Fireworks launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool illuminate the sky behind the Capitol and Washington Monument during one of the most patriotic fireworks displays in the nation, which draws in about 700,000 people each year. Fireworks are visible from many locations throughout D.C. and Northern Virginia.

Celebrations occur all day throughout the city, beginning with a parade down Constitution Avenue.

Idaho Falls, Idaho

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Melaleuca Freedom Festival is the largest Independence Day fireworks show west of the Mississippi River, and appeared multiple times twice on the American Pyrotechnics Association list of “ must-see Independence Day fireworks displays ," according to the event website. Organizers bill the festival as "more than just entertainment on the Fourth of July."  

Viewers will be surrounded by an idyllic mountain landscape on the banks of Snake River while listening to music accompanied with the firework show.

The soundtrack is intended to evoke emotion, instill patriotic pride and "remind listeners of the precious freedom they enjoy," according to the event website.

"It’s a heartfelt, unifying gift for the community — but more importantly, it’s a grateful tribute to America’s heroes," the website states.

New York City

The 47th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks celebration in New York City, the country's largest pyrotechnic display, will be "jam-packed with serious star power, electrifying performances and heart-pounding pyrotechnics," the event website states.

"Thousands of elements dance, swirl, pulse and sweep across the Big Apple skyline during every moment of our 25-minute extravaganza," the website states.

Some new features of this year’s show include a mile-wide waving flag with red, white and blue palm and strobing shells and a sunflower ring with crackling pistil shells.

San Francisco

San Francisco’s firework show can be seen along the waterfront with the city’s dramatic skyline in the background. Fireworks are launched from a barge off of Pier 39 and from the Municipal Pier.

Tourist attraction Fisherman’s Wharf hosts a number of local bands ahead of the celebration. 

The annual Music City July 4th: Let Freedom Sing celebration in Nashville is the region's largest fireworks show, with more than 1,000 floating flares, 40,000 pounds of explosives, and 200 miles of wire used. Grammy-winning country music singer Brad Paisley is one of several artists listed to perform at the event this year.

Spectators can expect to hear a symphony playing patriotic tunes and new popular music.

Addison, Texas

Kaboom Town, a top-ranked Independence Day festival with food vendors, entertainment, and an air show, host's a dazzling 25-minute fireworks display annually.

Addison is only home to 16,000 residents, but the event brings more than 500,000 guests to the town from across the nation, according to the event website . This year's event will be held on Monday, July 3.

Alachua, Florida

Dubbed the "Largest Small Town Fireworks Display in America,”  thousands of people will flock to Alachua, Florida, for the 23rd annual Fourth of July celebration. This free event positively impacts local businesses, according to the city’s website.

Philadelphia

What better way is there to celebrate independence than in the birthplace of the United States? 

The Philadelphia Museum of Art  on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Pennsylvania provides the perfect backdrop for one of the nation’s greatest fireworks shows as part of the  Wawa Welcome America festival — the city's 16-day festival "celebrating a season of freedom" that runs from Juneteenth to July Fourth.

"The display draws major crowds to the Parkway each year and caps off a massive free concert featuring award-winning superstar Demi Lovato and rap legend Ludacris," the event website states.

Blue Ash, Ohio

The annual Red, White and Blue Ash fireworks display at Summit Park, just outside Cincinnati, Ohio, is one of the largest fireworks celebrations in the area and has also made the American Pyrotechnics Association's list of “ must-see" displays. The non-stop 35 minute show features over 7,000 fireworks shells and 10,000 pounds of explosive power.

Last year, Grammy-nominated recording artist Gavin DeGraw headlined the Independence Day festival.

Utah Supreme Court sides with opponents of redistricting that carved up Democratic-leaning area

Utah's Supreme Court handed a victory Thursday to opponents of redistricting that carved up Democratic-leaning Salt Lake County among four congressional districts that have since all elected Republicans by wide margins.

The 5-0 ruling won’t affect elections this year. The Supreme Court sent the case back to a lower court to revisit the process for redrawing the state's congressional boundaries.

That will take time, and the current boundaries will remain for now.

But an attorney for the League of Women Voters and others that challenged the boundaries drawn by the state Legislature was optimistic they would be overturned.

“This is a sweeping victory,” said Mark Gaber with the Campaign Legal Center. "I’m hopeful we will prevail and in the end we will have new, fair maps in Utah.”

State lawmakers had argued the new maps ensured a better mix of urban and rural areas in all districts. They also said redistricting could not be subject to judicial review, a claim Supreme Court justices expressed skepticism about in arguments a year ago.

The contested map approved by the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature stripped power from a independent redistricting commission that had been established to ensure that congressional boundaries aren't drawn to favor one party over another. Utah voters created the commission by narrowly passing a “Better Boundaries” ballot initiative in 2018.

The Legislature repealed the “Better Boundaries” commission process in favor of its own. In 2021, lawmakers approved a map that divided Salt Lake County, which Joe Biden carried by 11 points in the 2020 election, among the state's four congressional districts.

Lawmakers ignored a map drawn by the commission, prompting the lawsuit.

“People were out going door to door soliciting signatures,” Katharine Biele, president of the Utah League of Women Voters, said of the ballot initiative. "Then the Legislature just threw out everything we’ve done. We’re a happy bunch right now.”

Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican who signed the commission repeal and redistricting bills into law and sided with lawmakers in the case, said in a statement he disagreed with some of the ruling but respected the Supreme Court's role in Utah government.

State legislative leaders were less accepting, calling it one of the worst rulings by the Utah Supreme Court they had ever seen.

“Rather than reaching the self-evident answer, today the court punted and made a new law about the initiative power, creating chaos and striking at the very heart of our republic,” Utah House President Stuart Adams and Speaker Mike Schultz said in a joint statement.

Utah's constitution gives significant weight to statewide ballot initiatives, which if approved become laws equal to those passed by the Legislature. Lawmakers may not change laws approved through ballot initiatives except to reinforce or at least not impair them, or to advance a compelling government interest, the Supreme Court ruled.

“I’m not going to make predictions about what courts will do, but that seems like a tall burden,” Gaber said of future proceedings in the case.

A landmark 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling denied state lawmakers' absolute power to draw congressional boundaries.

Republicans and Democrats in several other states including Kentucky, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Alaska have battled over whether partisan gerrymandering violates the law and imperils people’s right to choose their representatives.

In Ohio, in a series of legal challenges to maps redrawn to reflect the 2020 Census, the state Supreme Court declared two separate congressional maps and five sets of statehouse maps unconstitutionally gerrymandered to favor Republicans.

Though Republicans had missed deadlines and flouted court instructions , the court opted not to hold them in contempt, fearing a constitutional crisis. Amid the legal clashes, courts allowed Ohio to go forward under the unconstitutional maps on a one-time basis in 2022. Maps good through 2030 have since been passed on a bipartisan basis and all pending litigation dropped.

In Utah, Republicans have dominated elections in all four of the state's congressional districts since the redistricting. The last Democrat to represent Utah in the U.S. House was Ben McAdams, who narrowly lost to Burgess Owens after a recount in the Fourth District race in 2020.

In 2022, Owens won the district by an almost 30-point margin. The district previously had a history of trading hands between Republicans and Democrats after every election or two.
