25 Must-Have Travel Accessories in India in 2024

The travel accessories market in India is still in a very nascent stage. We usually search the internet thoroughly for multi-functional or utility-driven travel products and end up on US web stores. It is quite frustrating. However, we have been noticing that some such travel products are slowly becoming available online in India. We are so excited to share some must-have travel products and some unique travel accessories with you that might just be exactly what you were looking for, help reduce single-use plastic waste or make your travels more comfortable.

1. Foldable Travel Pillow

The issue with travel pillows is that they can be really bulky. The inflatable ones save space but are uncomfortable. So, try a cloth one or a foldable one. By a cloth one, I mean a travel pillow that isn’t bulky like a typical pillow but has structural support within. We use the TRTL pillow but it is not available in India. We got the Cabeau Evolution Travel Neck Pillow too recently and are pretty surprised by its comfort. It can be strapped to your flight seat too! When not in use, fold it into the provided cover and strap it to a bag. However, it is a tad bit expensive (we got ours for less than half the price on CRED), so here is a budget-friendly option .

2. Travel Blanket cum Cushion

Cabeau Microfibre Fold ‘n Go Travel Blanket is again a super cool travel accessory in India that serves a dual purpose. It comes folded and packed in a soft fleece case that can be used as a pillow, cushion or lumbar support. Unpacking the cover reveals a soft blanket. Foldable water bottles are amazing because they become so compact whenever not filled up, plus they weigh next to nothing. We use this Platypus Collapsible Softbottle purchased from the USA and found a very similar one, the Vapur Bottle , that delivers in India. I can’t find cheaper options to recommend but you could have a look at these foldable bottles on Amazon and see if you like any.

4. Filter Water Bottle

Honestly, we had been eyeing this for a while and are so happy this unique travel accessory is finally available in India. If you’re travelling to a country where drinking tap water is unsafe or you’re going camping, the Lifestraw Bottles and Straws will be a lifesaver. 6. Eye mask and Ear Plugs

Okay, by now, you must have realised that we love Cabeau. The reason being – they know what they’re doing! All their products are specially designed for travel, super comfortable, and adjustable. 9. Apple Airtag

Scared about losing your check-in luggage? Or are you worried about the theft of your day bag while exploring? Don’t worry, the Apple AirTag has got you. You can use the Find My Phone App to locate your items provided they have the Airtag inside them or attached to them. When not travelling, use the Airtag as a keychain so you never lose your keys (the Airtag can make a sound by clicking a button in your Find My Phone App). The applications are limitless. The pack of four comes out to be cheaper compared to getting just one and can be used inside all your bags when travelling, for peace of mind. There are two points to note: 1. It will only be able to find luggage when another iPhone is nearby. The iPhone ecosystem is pretty good so it shouldn’t be much of a problem except in rural areas. 2. You need to have an Apple product with an Apple ID to be able to use the AirTag. If you have a Samsung Galaxy Phone, try the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag . If you have another brand’s android phone, try Tile Mate . But be warned that while Tile products work great abroad they don’t work so well in India. This is so because, like Apple AirTags, the system relies on lost items coming in close contact with another Tile user to show up on a map. Since we don’t have enough Tile users in India, the system doesn’t work well enough.

This is another one of those travel products that are so basic but so important to remember if you’re travelling abroad. Do not, we repeat, do not forget to carry a  power adapter . There are at least 15 different types of electrical outlets in the world and you’d rather be prepared. Imagine not being able to charge your gadgets!

You might also consider carrying a multi-USB charger or a portable power strip if you have a lot of gadgets to charge. These have seriously helped us keep all our devices charge on the go.

We use our phones for everything these days – photos, videos, calling, message, social media, notes, editing and more – so obviously the battery runs out pretty quick. I know this one’s quite obvious, but just to re-iterate – carry a portable charger always so that your phone is always working and you never feel handicapped. Have you ever landed after a long flight and discovered your ankles have swollen or it hurts to walk. Well, not moving for a long time can take a toll on your blood circulation. If you like to carry a lot of toiletries or full-sized products when you travel, or if you’re travelling for more than a week, this type of bag is a good option. I would prefer the House of Quirk one solely for this reason.

However, if you’re a light traveller and carry only necessary toiletries in small travel-sized containers or are going on a short trip , then go for the Travalate Toiletry Bag instead. It is durable and water-resistant, but you won’t get the advantage of having a hook to hang the bag. Women can keep a little make-up in the front zip and toiletries in the main pocket.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts

F rom the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.

“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”  

Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”

While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting. 

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."

Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits. 

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day. 

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms. 

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins. 

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.

It accepts North American two- and three-prong plugs, and has a simple straightforward design. It’s worth noting though that this set won’t work in England, Ireland, or Scotland, but there are other three packs available that will work in those countries, plus India, China, Hong Kong, Australia, and more.

Other Travel Adapters We Liked

Two adapters we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list but had standout features that may meet the needs of some travelers. 

Tessan Type G Adapter : This adapter with two AC outlets plus two USB ports works in countries such as Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Hong Kong, UAE, Singapore, and various African countries. However, we found the AC outlets are too close together on the adapter to always be useful. 

Tessan Type E F Adapter : With five total ports (USB and AC) that work in numerous countries, this is a great adapter, but we think the two pack is a bit much, as one adapter already has five ports, meaning lots of travelers wouldn’t need a second adapter. This adapter is also wider than other adapters so it can take up more unnecessary space. 

The T+L team tested 12 different adapters and converters in various countries across the world. We noted what countries we were in while using the adapters or converters, and how easy it was to use each one. We also ranked them based on effectiveness, meaning how well they charged our devices, and value in terms of price versus performance. 

Tips for Buying Adapters and Converters

Research your destination.

Before leaving on your trip, be sure to check out what types of outlets are used in the countries you’re visiting, and buy adapters and converters accordingly. The last thing you’ll want is to accidentally fry your travel steamer (or other device) while abroad and spend the rest of the trip sporting wrinkles. Some hotels provide USB ports inside hotel rooms, but it’s best to make sure they’re available before arriving empty-handed.

Consider a kit

If you’re visiting numerous countries and are in a rush, it’s sometimes easier to simply buy a kit with several adapters for multiple different destinations, which can save you money instead of buying numerous adapters. Lots of kits are small enough to tuck away in your bag or carry-on, so just be sure that you take along the ones you need.

Read the fine print

Always be sure to read the instructions that come with your adapter or converter, and be sure to pay attention to the power details. You may think a converter is safe for your styling tools or appliances when it's actually not, and you could fry your device, or blow a fuse, if the adapter doesn’t convert voltage.

An adapter is used when you need to plug a specific type of prong into a different socket. It allows you to plug your U.S.-style prong into an outlet in another country that uses a different type of plug. A converter is different in that it changes the voltage of an outlet to match the voltage of the item being plugged in. Some countries use 110/120 volts, while others use 220/240 volts. If you don’t use a converter, you could ruin your device, or even risk a fire.

If your destination has a different prong type than your outlets at home, then you’ll need an adapter. But if the voltage is different in the place you’re traveling than it is at home, you’ll need a converter to convert that voltage. Some products have dual voltage, which means the device can handle voltages from all over the world.

Most of Europe uses Type C plugs, which also fit into Type E, F, H, J, K, L, and N sockets that may replace Type C in places such as Denmark, Switzerland, and Italy. (England and the rest of the U.K. uses Type G.) Always double check exactly which one you’ll need before your departure.

The Best Chai in India, According to Locals

Over endless cups of the best chai in India, many a writer has found the missing piece of that big murder mystery novel brewing in their head for years; or solace in a fellow writer’s struggle to find the words to describe difficult feelings; or humor in an overheard conversation at a street-side tea stand. This is the special, however romanticized, connection between writers and chai. For some, chai represents a quiet break in the middle of ever-looming story deadlines, for others, it's a resilient connection to the cities in India they love and write about. So who better to recommend the best places to get chai than writers across India?

Below, writers recommend their favorite spots in their city for the best chai in India, from quaint cafés to decades-old tearooms and bustling stalls.

Recommendations from Diya Kohli, director of features and special projects at Condé Nast Traveller India: “Kolkata is known for its culture of cha and adda. Growing up, this was a way of life: the pause in a working day, a chance meeting with an old friend, a quick pitstop after a walk. In my years in the city, I have had chai across several unnamed tea stalls; vendors who moved around with a kettle and their paper cups, selling the city’s specialty lebu cha (a lemony black tea turned savory by the addition of black salt). And these existed alongside the cafés that sold fine Darjeeling blends, where tea drinking was as much a sensory play of aroma and flavor as a wine tasting.

Dolly’s The Tea Shop is a tiny café in the Dakshinapan Shopping Complex where people sit on mudas or cane stools surrounding wooden tea crates repurposed into tables and drink some of the finest Darjeeling teas. Apart from the great tea, this is a spot with character; the late Dolly Roy who ran the place was the permanent fixture presiding over the space, saying hello and always making sure people got a spot to sit. I always get the Darjeeling second flush, lemon ice tea, and ham sandwich. Radhu Babu’s Tea Shop in the bustling Lake Market calls itself the oldest tea shop in Kolkata, and was set up by a revolutionary freedom fighter, Radha Kishore Dutta. I love their black tea and their fresh bread loaves slathered with butter and pepper. Maharani Tea and Tiffin is a tiny stall with fab tea served in a kulhad and the best puri aloo, samosas, and jalebis, making it the right place for breakfast and an anytime-snack. This is a place known for tasty bites and quick service, and is very popular with all the people who come for a walk at the Rabindra Sarovar Lake .”

Raghuveer Tea Stall, located above the verandas in the walled city of Jaipur, gives a panoramic view of the city.

Recommendations from Poorvi Singhal, food and travel writer: “ Tapri has been a go-to spot since my school days. Every time it rains, or on days when the sky is particularly beautiful, I sit at their terrace to enjoy my masala chai with a view. The black pepper and cinnamon can be a bit much for some people, but I really enjoy the slight sting at the back of the throat. If you like your chai decadent, I recommend going for their Theth Chai; it smells of saffron and has a rich texture. Their playlist is great too: a mix of ’90s classics, Indie favorites, folk music, and a handful of Nescafé Basement and Coke Studio songs. Located in the center of Chaura Rasta in the walled city of Jaipur, Sahu is where you can really feel the pulse of the city amidst the hubbub of shops and temples. Going to Sahu means calling for Cutting Chai with little milk and sugar. Their chai masala powder (ask the kind uncle at the counter to get a sniff of it) brews an aromatic cup. I go here when I want a quick, no-nonsense chai. Uncle’s smile while pouring your chai is always a plus, as are their long, flaky kharis.

My first visit to Gulab Ji Chai was at 5:30 a.m. a few years ago, after a night of heavy partying. No other place was open so early and my friends and I desperately needed a warm cup to calm our spinning heads. So we called for some chai, loved it, and ordered seconds; we’ve now made it our go-to for hangover mornings. The kadak chai, buzzing crowd, and sweet scent of tea immediately wake you up. Get the sweet kadak chai—the place is too busy for any customizations—and the very popular bun maska. It’s soft as a cloud and doused in butter. Raghuveer Tea Stall is located above the verandas in the walled city of Jaipur, giving a panoramic view of the city. The sound of shop shutters rolling up, temple bells, and vegetable vendors with gorgeous sunrise and sunset views makes it one of the most soothing chai spots in the city. The best part about Raghuveer is how customisable their tea is. I always get the ‘paani zyada doodh kam’ version with no sugar. But bhaiya is happy to customize it however you’d like.”

Recommendation from Suprita Mitter, food writer: “I’m Bengali-born and raised in Mumbai. My grandmother was raised in Kolkata, and in that house, evening tea was always an event. Everyone sat around the table, the good crockery was brought out and tea cosies were laid. I’ve always liked tea and prefer it without milk, as it is typically served in Kolkata; Darjeeling tea is my favorite. In Mumbai, my favorite spot is Taj Mahal Tea House . That’s where I had my first date with my partner as well. I love their Smoky Mountain Tea. I also really enjoy the sulemani chai at Prithvi Cafe , which comes with a slice of lime.”

At Cafe Lota in Delhi, get the the palak patta chaat and the sabudana vadas in a paper cone with chai.

Recommendations from Shirin Mehrotra, food writer: “My go-to chai order anywhere is a kadak chai with less sugar. In Delhi, I enjoy Dahiya Dhaba, Cafe Lota, and the tea stall in CR Park Market No.1. At Cafe Lota , the chai and the food is great; I always get the palak patta chaat and the bite-sized sabudana vadas in a paper cone with chai. The café is inside an art museum and is not too noisy, which is why I particularly enjoy it. The chai is strong, not too sweet and doesn’t have elaichi, which I appreciate because I don’t enjoy it. At Dahiya Dhaba , I always get the sattu paratha along with chai. The a stall in Chittaranjan Park is closer to where I live, so it feels very familiar at this point. For me, chai stalls are great vantage points to understand a city; I like to just sit there with a cup of chai, observe and sometimes even listen to the conversations happening around me.”

Recommendation from Suprita Mitter, food writer: “One of my favorite places is French Window Patisserie . They’re known for their baked goods, but I love their rose tea. They don’t believe in any fanciness. It’s a simple cup of hot rose tea. This was the cup of tea that calmed my nerves the first time I was meeting my partner’s parents, and ever since then, it’s the place I come to when I need a break or just have a little time to myself. I usually order the opera cake with the rose tea. Paashh , in Kalyani Nagar, has an exhaustive tea menu from which I favor the marigold tea. The place has these large floor-to-ceiling windows that allow you to enjoy views of the beautiful garden outside. It’s very soothing, which is what I want to feel when I’m having a cup of tea. I also enjoy their Flower Power salad and flourless cake. Irani Cafe has branches all over Pune and I enjoy their sulemani chai, which is served with pieces of dates.”

Recommendation from Ruth Dsouze Prabhu, food writer: “ Makkah Cafe is an absolute experience. It’s an old-world spot that’s seen generations of tea drinkers over the years and is typically filled with students. You’re lucky to find an empty spot on one of the benches, but you can also just stand and enjoy a quick cup. I love their sulemani chai and kova buns. I have been going there regularly ever since I moved to Bengaluru 22 years ago. It was the perfect place for broke newcomers like me back then, and was at the top of my list for exploring the street-food culture of the city when I got into food writing. Now, it’s a place of comfort whenever I’m in the area. It also helps that Khazana Food Paradise , a place famous for its beef biryani, is close by.”

On top of their popular chai menu, Sharma Ji Ki Chai also makes delicious round samosas with a potato filling.

Recommendation from Shirin Mehrotra, food writer: “ Qadir Lassi and Kashmiri Chail has a nice, strong chai that they are happy to customize to your liking. It’s a good place to observe the city and people-watch because it's in a crowded market. Sharma Ji Ki Chai is the most popular chai shop in Lucknow. Their chai can sometimes be too milky for me, but they have great snacks. The bun makhan, bread stuffed with white butter, is a very popular breakfast dish and goes great with the chai. They also make these round samosas with an excellent potato filling that has coriander seeds and a crisp outer crust. M/S Ram Kewal Tea Stall in Hazratganj was my father’s favorite chai spot in Lucknow. They wash the glass with hot water, add black tea, add milk and sugar, and top it all off with malai. The milk is poured from a distance, so the tea is a bit frothy. This is an old Delhi-style chai in Lucknow.”

Most half-term holidays aren’t until the last week of October , leaving you most of the month to plan an autumn break without having to worry about massive price hikes.

Southern Europe is especially appealing at that time of year when temperatures will still be in the 20Cs and the Mediterranean should still be warm enough for swimming, sunbathing and watersports.

Head south to Morocco and flit from the coast to Marrakech , or bask in the autumn sunshine on Malta ’s little sister island of Gozo .

Wander through the exquisite villages in the Luberon region of Provence, or unwind on the long sandy beaches of Goa. Enjoy Georgian splendour in Norfolk , or go hiking in Somerset’s alluring beauty spots.
