Things to do around Höfn: Attractions

After spending a day in the surroundings of Vík we continued our Iceland road trip to Höfn. Höfn is a small fishing town located in the southeast of Iceland , on a peninsula between the Hornafjörður and Skarðsfjörður fjords. We stayed here for one night, in a hotel, the Milk Factory . After a few nights in guesthouses, it was great to enjoy some luxury!

Fjallsárlón glacial lake

The Fjallsárlón glacier lake is located in the south of Iceland, about an hour’s drive from Höfn . I thought this was the coolest glacier lake I’ve ever seen! Fjallsárlón is part of Iceland’s largest glacier Vatnajökull. If you drive from Vík to Höfn, you can stop at several places along the road to see the Fjallsárlón from a distance. Want to get closer to the lake? Then navigate to the Fjallsárlón restaurant and walk towards the lake from here!

Tip: Park at the Fjallsárlón restaurant and walk to the glacier lake. Here you will find huge ice rocks in the water, as far as you can see. A marvelous sight!

Jökulsárlón

The Jökulsárlón glacier lake is the largest (surface area of 23 km²) and the most popular glacier lake in Iceland. The lake is about 250 meters deep, which makes it the deepest in the whole country! Jökulsárlón hasn’t been around that long. It was created around 1934 and has grown considerably over the years due to glacier melting. A river connects the lake to the Atlantic Ocean, which means that seals swim here.

Tip: Drive from Höfn in the direction of Vík along the large parking lot at the Jökulsárlón glacier lake. There are several smaller parking lots a bit further which aren’t that busy. I advise you to park at one of these parking places and walk over the dunes to the lake.

Diamond Beach

Opposite the large parking lot of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lake, you will find Diamond Beach, a black sand beach where the ice rocks from the glacier lake wash ashore. The ice rocks, which look like diamonds, shine in the sun. The contrast with the black beach makes it a great (Instagram) photo opportunity! Seals swim in the sea and if you’re very lucky you can see orcas or other whales swimming at Diamond Beach.

Stokksnes & Vestrahorn

Stokksnes is a peninsula about 15 kilometers from Höfn and is a popular spot among photographers, because Vestrahorn is located here. Vestrahorn is one of the most beautiful cliffs in Iceland. The peaks of the mountains have an altitude of 454 meters and are surrounded by a black beach. A wonderful bit of nature!

Vestrahorn is just off the beaten track, which makes it not super touristy. The Stokksnes peninsula has an interesting history that dates back to the 9th century, with Horn being one of the first settlements in the country.

To visit Stokksnes and the Vestrahorn viewpoint, you have to pay an entrance fee. The entrance fee is 900 ISK per person.

Viking Village movie set

Another attraction on Stokksnes is the Viking Village film set, an abandoned film set entirely in Viking style, for the never-released Universal film Viking. The film never went into production, because the production company had problems financing it. The set was built in 2010 on a plot of land belonging to a local farmer and is now open to visitors.

The best thing about the village are the cottages, which portray the past well. You can see the houses from the outside, but you can also get inside. You can even visit the dungeon! The dungeon lies under a huge, fake rock.

The entrance fee for the film set is 800 ISK per person.

National Park Skaftafell & Svartifoss waterfall

Skaftafell has been a National Park since 1967 and has been part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2008. It is a perfect place for people who love outdoor activities! The landscape is beautiful, you can hike and there is a campsite where you can spend the night. In the park you will find several hiker routes of up to 30 kilometers.

The Skaftafell National Park is home to the Svartifoss waterfall, a waterfall surrounded by black basalt columns. For me, this was the most beautiful waterfall I’ve seen in Iceland. The basalt columns were created by lava that cooled down very slowly, which allowed it to crystallize.

To get to this waterfall, follow the ‘Svartifoss hike route’. In total this route is 5.5 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours. The route starts next to the Skaftafell visitor center where you will find information and road signs. Walk over the campsite for the first 250 meters and then up the mountain. Follow the signs until you reach a viewpoint above the waterfall. You walk about 1.5 kilometers uphill (140 meters climbing). This is the toughest part. From here it is not too difficult, and you can follow the path in the direction of the waterfall.

The National Park Skaftafell is free to visit. However, you have to pay a parking fee if you arrive by car. The parking fee is 600 ISK per car.

Eating in Höfn: Ishusid Restaurant Pizzeria

Dining out in Iceland is generally quite expensive. That’s why we mainly cooked our own meals in the accommodations and guesthouses we stayed at. In Höfn we did go out to dinner. We ate at Ishusid Restaurant Pizzeria in Höfn harbor. This Italian restaurant is very affordable, both for Icelandic and international standards. You have a choice of 13 different pizzas costing about 2500-3000 ISK and because these pizzas were so tasty, Ishusid Restaurant Pizzeria certainly deserves a mention!

Höfn Travel Guide

Höfn is an Icelandic fishing town of just over two thousand people in southeast Iceland. It is the most significant settlement on Route 1 between the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur in the south and Egilsstaðir in the east.

This town can be reached by many self-drive tours , such as this 7-Day Winter Adventure , and guided packages, including this 6-Day Summer Vacation . If you rent a car , you can plan a trip there independently.

Geography of Höfn

The town is right at the tip of its own peninsula, which is easy to reach throughout the year. It sits at the base of Route 99, which detours off from Route 1. It is surrounded on three sides by the ocean, which has been known to freeze over in extreme conditions.

The town can also be reached by plane in good weather, as it is one of the few locations in the country with a domestic airport.

The largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull , which sits in a National Park of the same name, is within clear view of Höfn.

Nearby Locations to Höfn

Höfn is most often visited by those driving the full Ring Road of Iceland, as a place to stay just before or after visiting the South Coast or East Fjords .

It is also visited independently, however, by those seeking to spend enough time near the sites of southeast Iceland, most notably Vatnajökull National Park, the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon , the Diamond Beach and Vestrahorn Mountain.

All of these sites are incredible. Vatnajökull, for example, is incredibly diverse, boasting a huge array of different sites to marvel over. In its southwestern corner, for example, it is home to the Skaftafell Nature Reserve , an oasis of unbelievable scenery, whereas to its east sits the mighty mountain Snæfell , renowned for its wildlife such as pink-footed geese and reindeer.

The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon has recently been enveloped into the National Park, but warrants its own discussion. Out of all the sites listed, it is here where most visitors to Höfn want to spend the bulk of their time. This lagoon is, in fact, Iceland’s deepest lake, and renowned for being full of great icebergs throughout the year.

These bergs snap off of a tongue of Vatnajökull glacier, before slowly cruising through the waters towards the ocean. As they travel, they often become resting spots for some of the many seals who live in and around the lagoon.

The site is marvellous to behold, with a particular appeal for landscape photographers. Visitors, however, should not spend all their time in the lagoon. By following the channel from Jökulsárlón to the ocean, you will come onto the Diamond Beach, where these icebergs wash up on the shore and glisten against the black sands.

A final site in southeast Iceland, closer to Höfn than those previously listed, is Mount Vestrahorn. This jagged peak is ominous and dramatic, with two sharp peaks that have created the nickname ‘the Batman Mountain'. Another favourite among photographers, it’s distinct silhouette and colouration make it the perfect subject regardless of the weather.

Culture at Höfn

Like many of Iceland’s small, coastal towns, Höfn has a surprising amount of culture. Its cuisine is particularly notable, with the celebration of it coming to a head at the annual Lobster Festival, held every July. This comes as little surprise, considering the town’s long history as an important fishing port.

Höfn also has several art museums where visitors can admire local handicrafts, although it should be noted, in spite of conflicting evidence on the internet, that the Höfn Glacier Museum is now closed.

Hofn is a large settlement on the shores of Hornafjörður in Southeast Iceland. The town is known for its village charm, incredible lobster restaurants, and stunning coastal sights. Hofn is not a big town, but it’s filled with numerous restaurants, a pharmacy, a swimming pool, and museums. Its closeness to Europe’s largest glacier,  Vatnajökull , makes the town’s surrounding landscapes incredible. 

Vatnajökull National Park extends over the surrounding area and the effect of the voluminous glacier is obvious in the landscapes. You can see how the glacier rivers have carved the terrain and flushed away some of the rocks and flora in the Hofn area.

The town’s main trademark is, unquestionably, its tasty lobster. You can find lobster in local restaurants, which serve the best lobster dishes in the country. In fact, Höfn is known as  the Lobster Capital of Iceland .

The name Höfn means “harbor.” This is due to the fact that one of the few natural harbors is located in the area. The name Hornafjörður then originates from the old Viking farm, Horn, which is located in the fjord. The fjord’s name roughly translates to “Horn’s fjord.”

Where does the name of the Horn Farm come from? The answer lies in the “horny mountains.” All around the farm you will find sharp-peaked mountains – the most famous being Vestrahorn. When the Vikings arrived and started to settle, they thought this would be the most appropriate landmark to name.  

Hofn i Hornafirdi is somewhat of a hub of culture in the area as the closest villages  Kirkjubæjarklaustur  (2 h 40 min away) and Djúpivogur (1 h 30 min away) are quite distant. The town offers all the basic services one might need, a pharmacy, a post office, a swimming pool, a supermarket, shops, golf courses, and more.

• Over 2150 people lived in Iceland’s Hornafjordur municipality last time it was counted
• Hofn is sometimes nicknamed “The Lobster Capital” or “The Lobster Town”

• Höfn used to have a glacier museum which hosted glaciers exhibitions and geological lessons, but unfortunately, it closed in 2013

Where is Hofn located?

Hofn is located at the brim of its own peninsula, at the base of road nr 99 right off the famous  Ring Road  1 in the  South East of Iceland . Höfn is 458.2 km (284.7 mi) from  Reykjavík , 271,6 km (169 mi) from  Vík  and 256,3 km (159,2 mi) from Egilsstaðir.

How to get to Hofn?

Hofn in Hornafirdi can easily be reached by car or plane in good weather as Höfn is one of the few places found around Iceland housing its own domestic airport.

Driving from Reykjavík to Höfn   will take about 6 hours without any stops but as there is so much to see on the way we can’t recommend it in one go. From Reykjavík, you will follow Ring Road 1 through the towns of Hveragerði,  Selfoss ,  Hella , and  Hvolsvölur .

Go past the waterfall pair of  Seljalandsfoss  and  Skógafoss , past the  airplane wreckage at Sólheimasandur , the town of Vík and  Reynisfjara Black Sand beach . Onwards you will drive through the black sand of Mýrdalur and in and out of the village, Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Further along, you will be greeted with glacial views,   Skaftafell National Park   and   Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon . After having driven along the South Coast for about five and a half hours you will reach Höfn!

What to do at and around Höfn?

• Try the local swimming pool   – take a dip into the authentic Icelandic culture!
• Join a glacier tour   – there are so many magical glacier tours options in the region, ranging from glacier hikes to ice cave tours to glacier lagoons kayaking exhibitions.
• Visit Stokksnes for some splendid views   – the horned mountain of Vestrahorn and the black sandy beach around it is breathtakingly beautiful!
• Make a stop at Gamlabúð   – this historical building and shop, best explored with the audio tour available on site.
• Try some fresh Nordic Lobster   – the local restaurant offer stellar meals with the seafood catch of the day!
• Visit Kiddi’s Workshop   – A remarkable stone collection!
• Visit Nýheimar Cultural Center and Local Museum   – ask around for artistic events and exhibitions.

Humarhátíð “The Lobster Festival”

Once a year, late June, the capital of Lobster takes its trademark to another level with an all-over festival. It has been held for many years now and has quickly become known as one of the best Icelandic festivals! Find out more about  Höfn’s Lobster Festival . Sjómannadagurinn “The Sailor Day”

The first Sunday in June is a big celebrating all around Iceland. This is one of the oldest traditions still held in Iceland in order to celebrate the bravery and hard work of our sailors. Head to the harbor for a parade, candy floss, musical acts and much more.

• Humarhofnin   – These Seafood pros never fail! One of the best-rated restaurants in the region, loved by travelers as well as locals.
• Ishusid Pizzeria Restaurant   – in the mood for good pizza? This great little Pizzeria will surely not disappoint!
• Hafnarbudin  – Good price for good food. Local dishes with some influence from the typical American diner. Excellent fish and chips!
• Z Bistro   – Local Seafood par excellence and a surprisingly good breakfast buffet.
• Kaffi Hornid   – This bar/café is a fantastic stop to make for a quick cup or a drink but if you are going for the food this place will not lack in deliverance, an amazing place for any occasion. Go for a reindeer burger or a lobster pizza.

The Camping Ground at Höfn is simply fantastic.  Facilities on-site include toilets, showers (every 2 min costs 50 ISK), electricity, washers, dryers.

Nearby you will find a supermarket, a swimming pool, golf courses, a sports area, a playground, and many wonderful restaurants.

Movies, TV Shows or Music Videos filmed at Höfn

A few blockbuster movies have been shot close to Vík, including two James Bond movies at Jökulsárlón and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty but perhaps the most famous movie location in Vík is of a movie that never actually came out.

The Abandoned Viking Film Set right off the borders of Vík is a sight to behold. This incredible complete remake of a Viking village truly takes you back in time and gives you a chance to roam around in an authentic Viking village.

You can visit the area for 800 ISK and there is a small café on site.

The Viking Village was built in 2010 for what was supposed to be a big movie, called Vikingr, but with inefficient funds, the movie got put on hold. The director of the movie, Baltasar Kormákur, continues to pay the lando wner to keep the village. He still hopes that the movie will be made.

Hofn has quite mild weather but is recognized for its rain. The average summer temperatures are around 12°c (54 F) but in winter the temperatures are a little over freezing. You can easily follow the weather for Hofn at the  Icelandic Weather Forecast page .

Like everywhere in Iceland, you should dress in layers! Wear more so you can simply take off if the weather pleasantly surprises you. In Iceland, less is always more!

Höfn in Winter

Getting to Höfn in winter can involve a little more risk and effort than travels in summer. If you are driving, you’ll need a 4×4 or good winter tires. You will also need to have experience driving in snow and slippery circumstances.

The staging post for the southeast, Höfn is a small town perched on a narrow neck of land, with a prime view inland of four glacial tongues descending Vatnajökull – at least on days when the pernicious fogs abate. The bay here, Hornafjörður, was settled in Viking times by Hrollaugur Rögnvaldsson, distant ancestor of saga writer Snorri Sturluson, though the town itself began life as late as 1897 as a trading post, unimaginatively named Höfn (Harbour) after the bay’s deep anchorage. Expansion followed the 1950s fishing boom and the establishment of a fish-freezing plant, which remains the largest local employer; Höfn is famed for its fine lobster.

Hornafjörður is a blooming community close to the biggest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull in the southeastern part of Iceland. The district’s most densely populated area is Höfn. In this region, you are located at the base of Vatnajökull, and the scenery is breathtaking. Vatnajökull National Park, the largest national park in Europe, is situated in the community. In the last few decades, tourism has grown enormously and has, in fact, become a major economic sector in the community. Diverse services are provided, including hotels, camping sites, restaurants, shops, swimming pools, golf courses, marked hiking trails, and various museums, such as a maritime museum, two national park visitor centers, and the center of the great writer Þórbergur Þórðarson.

Höfn’s growth in the 20th century from a small village to today’s town was a result of the development of a relatively diverse fishing industry. The landed catch is now more varied than in other fishing towns, including high-value species such as the Norway lobster ( Nephrops norvegicus ), but a good part of the Icelandic lobster catch is landed at Höfn. In recent years the town has promoted lobster as a central part of its image, for instance with a "lobster festival" that is held each summer. Höfn actually means harbor, though repeated dredging has proved necessary to keep the entrance of the harbor safe from sand deposits.

In the Icelandic language, “Hofn” translates to “harbor,” and, similar to many of Iceland city names, it is pretty self-explanatory. Hofn has been a fishing port since the early 20th century, and by the 1940s, it had evolved into one of the largest fishing ports in the country.

The nickname “Lobster Town” truly captures its essence, as its lobsters are renowned for their freshness and flavor. The cold, nutrient-rich waters off the Icelandic coast provide the ideal conditions for the crustaceans to thrive.

However, beyond just catching lobsters, Hofn has embraced them as a culinary cornerstone. You’ll find numerous restaurants in the town showcasing lobster in different ways, from classic grilled options to bisques and pasta dishes. 

Where is Hofn Iceland?

Höfn is located on southeast Iceland, making it an ideal hub for any South Coast itinerary . It’s set within Vatnajökull National Park, home to one of Europe’s largest glaciers. It’s about 480 kilometers (300 miles) east of Reykjavik, capital of Iceland .

How to Get to Hofn?

There are two primary options available for reaching Hofn Iceland: joining a tour or renting a car. 

Joining a tour offers convenience and means you can let someone else handle the driving and navigation of the sometimes-challenging Icelandic road conditions . You’ll also get to enjoy insights and commentary from an experienced guide who knows the area best. However, guided tours offer very little flexibility in your itinerary and activities as tour schedules and stops are pre-determined. Additionally, it will cost substantially more than renting a car, especially for smaller groups. 

Renting a car gives you the ability to explore at your own pace and discover hidden gems and detours along your drive to Hofn (and there are many!). Renting a car is definitely the preferred way to travel in Iceland, as there are very limited public transportation routes in the country.

With a rental car, there is not limit to what or where you can explore, which is crucial to experience Iceland to the fullest. Additionally, renting a car is much more cost-effective than booking multiple tours, and you can split the cost with your group.

Rental cars also provide comfort, since you can choose a vehicle that is best suited to your group with ample space, you can adjust the temperature to your liking, and make rest stops whenever you need to. Hofn is home to multiple local museums where you can gain a deeper understanding of the town (and country’s) cultural heritage. At the Gamlabúð Folk Museum you can discover how past generations worked, lived and fished in Hofn, and learn about local customs and traditions. The Hornafjörður Cultural Center features six museums, including regional, maritime, natural history, art, book, and district archives. The center also hosts exhibitions and events, which are free to visit. 

Vestrahorn Mountain

Located only about a 15-minute drive from Hofn is the majestic Vestrahorn Mountain. This dramatic mountain, rising sharply from the black sand beach , is also known as Vesturhorn or Stokksnes and is often photographed reflected in the waters.

During the winter months, it typically has a snowcapped peak, and during the summer, it often sports green slopes. There is a viewing platform that is accessible by car, and while you can’t go hiking on Vestrahorn itself, there are several Iceland hiking trails in the area that offer stunning views of the mountain.

You’ll also find a replica of a Viking village that was used in the filming of the TV show The Witcher. There is a small fee to visit the mountain, as it’s on private land, and you can purchase tickets from the Viking Cafe.

Hoffell Hot Tubs

The Hoffell Hot Tubs are five natural Iceland hot springs , heated by the geothermal waters created from volcanic activity. They are located in a hillside overlooking Hofn, with views of the Atlantic Ocean, and Vatnajökull glacier.

Each tub offers a slightly different temperature, catering to varying preferences. But don’t expect any fancy facilities like the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon . This experience is more focused on enjoying nature and relaxing in the geothermal waters.

The Hoffell Hot Tubs are just 5 kilometers (3 miles) from Hofn town center. You can walk along a scenic path, which takes about 30 minutes, or drive only 5 minutes towards Vík Iceland to find a small parking lot near the entrance.

Don’t leave Hofn without trying the fresh local lobster that has given the town the nickname “The Lobster Town.” While you will find lobster at most of the restaurants in Hofn, there are a few restaurants that are constantly rated the best! 

Pakkhús Restaurant: Pakkhús is located directly at the Hofn harbor, with views of the boats and docks, so you know they get the freshest lobster! The restaurant, which is set in an old packing house built in 1932, is constantly rated the best in town, with a menu centered around local produce from the region. You’ll find dishes like lobster soup, oven-grilled lobster tail, whole-baked lobster, and smoked Arctic char.

Kaffi Hornið: Kaffi Hornið offers a menu centered around lobster, but also serving fresh-caught fish and local beef and lamb. On the menu, there is lobster soup, lobster tempura, lobster pizza, lobster salad, lobster pasta, lobster sandwiches, and the list goes on and on. If you want to try local lobster in as many ways as possible, then this is the place to do it!

Otto Matur & Drykkur: Otto Matur & Drykkur is located in a beautiful building overlooking the harbor. It’s praised for having one of the best lobster soups in town, but you’ll also find a range of other Icelandic food options like duck confit, homemade bread, beef tenderloin and grilled cod.

However, you can expect a higher volume of tourists in the summer, along with higher prices and demand, so make sure to book your Iceland rental car and accommodations well in advance. 

In the winter, it is much colder and the weather can be highly unpredictable. However, the winter offers the potential to see the northern lights and enjoy the attractions with fewer crowds and better prices. There are also unique activities available in the winter, such as glacier hiking, ice climbing, and snowmobiling.

What to know about the area

Irish monks are believed to have lived in this area before the Vikings arrived in around 870 AD/CE. Later on, a farm belonging to one of the first Vikings to settle in Iceland was established, situated a little to the east of where the town stands today, in the area called Horn, “horn” has exactly the same meaning in English.

People actually started settling at Höfn less than two centuries ago, they came to work in the fishing industry, Höfn officially became a town in 1988. The high-value Norwegian lobster and the Icelandic lobster catch are now landed and processed in Höfn, making it the Lobster Capital of Iceland. Today, thanks to the growing number of fisheries and tourism, the town is blooming.

The land is dominated by stunning mountains, wide rivers and giant glaciers, the scenery of this place is mind-blowing.

Höfn - literally translates to Harbor. Sitting on the shores of the totally breathtaking Hornafjörður, in the shadows of the largest ice cap in Europe, the majestic  Vatnajökull , is magical. Hornafjörður, however, is technically not a fjord, but a large freshwater lagoon, formed by the sediment left by powerful glacial rivers.

• The adorable harbor with its colorful boats. There is a walking path that leads to a bird reserve south of the harbor.
• Gamlabúð  ‘Old Shop’ is a Folk Museum situated in one of the oldest houses in Höfn. This popular museum focuses on the history of one of the most isolated parts of Iceland. It displays a collection related to the lives of local people in old Icelandic farming communities, covering the period between 1850-1950.
• Hornafjörður Art Museum is a small gallery that hosts exhibitions of the Municipal Art Collection and contemporary local artists, focusing mainly on the work of Svavar Gudnason.
• Huldusteinn stone museum - a private collection of Iceland's diverse rocks  and stones is exhibited at Höfn's old swimming pool. This is absolutely recommended for geology enthusiasts.

Where to eat in Höfn

• Jón Ríki   is a farmhouse restaurant at Hólmur, next to the ring road, 32 km from Höfn. It is well known for its small in-house brewery, and beautifully presented, high-quality dishes, made from local products. You are advised to make a booking so the owners will know you are coming.
• Pakkhús  is a restaurant, café and bar, located just beside the information center in town with harbor views. The menu places emphasis on the use of local ingredients from the area around the Vatnajökull Region: langoustine, lamb, salted cod, duck & pork.
• Humarhöfnin, ‘The Lobster Harbor’ this restaurant also has a beautiful view over the harbor. A cheerful interior and good atmosphere, freshly caught, first-class langoustine, and arctic char.
• Z-Bistro  is fairly new, their main focus is on langoustine but they are also dedicated to keeping their prices reasonable. This bistro offers a large and diverse selection of lobster and other local dishes.
• Nýhöfn New Harbor’, as the name indicates, is also located by the harbor! The building was the first family house to be built in Höfn in 1897.  A small and intimate restaurant with a classic Scandinavian interior. They offer local seafood, langoustine, lamb and vegetarian options.

ATTRACTIONS NEAR HÖFN

Hvalnes Nature Reserve   with a beautiful yellow lighthouse and the picturesque Eystrahorn mountain, located nearby, is an absolute must-see. The black sandy beach stretches over a few kilometers, images of the surrounding mountains are mirrored in the water on calm days.

Stokksnes and the Vestrahorn mountain, just the other side of the bay, have a beauty that is equally breathtaking. Surrounded by grassy black sand dunes, this place is also the perfect playground for both amateur and professional photographers.

Hoffellsjökull  is one of the closest glacier tongues to Höfn, located approximately 25 km from the town. There are some nice, short walks and longer hiking trails in the area, with excellent panoramic views over this glacier tongue, which calves into a small lake.

Fláajökull  is another nearby glacier tongue, around 30 km from Höfn. A great walking trail leads from the parking area to this glacial tongue.

Heinabergsjökull  glacier tongue is just next to Fláajökull. Its  glacier lagoon  is a fabulous hidden treasure.

Diamond beach , Jökulsárlón and Breiðamerkurjökull  glacier  are located about 80 km from Jökulsárlón. Höfn is the closest town to Iceland’s most admired natural wonder, this epic glacier lagoon with giant floating icebergs, seals and ice diamonds on the black sea shore.

The source of these monumental ice chunks, a glacier tongue called   Breiðamerkurjökull , is an even more unique treasure, a   Crystal Ice Cave , hidden within its depths. This cave can be visited from November to March but the glacier lagoon and Diamond beach are accessible all year round.

Festivals in the area

• Þorrablót   is a midwinter festival. The name refers to the old month of Þorri, from the middle of January to the middle of February in the old Icelandic calendar. The festival is usually held between the 19th and 26th of January. This is one of the most popular events in the Höfn area.
• Sailors Day is on the first Sunday of June, this was when the fishing vessels first went out after the winter break in the olden days. It is a big festival in Höfn with concerts and exciting events.
• Humarhátíð ,  Lobster Festival  - this usually consists of numerous events and concerts. It is usually held in June.

How to Get to Höfn

There are a number of ways that one can get to Höfn with the most common being:

Hornafjördur has a domestic airport, so you can catch a flight from Reykjavík Domestic Airport and then just take a 10-minute drive via taxi or rental car to Höfn. The flight will take you between 1-2 hours depending on the Iceland weather .

Via Rental Car

This will always be our preferred method of exploring the island. Getting from Reykjavík to Höfn via the Ring Road will take you about 10-12 hours, so keep this in mind when planning your road trip itinerary. Reaching Höfn is super easy, though; just follow the Ring Road all along the south coast till you reach the signs to Höfn.
