  • YOUR KAYAKING GUIDE TO QUEENSLAND

kayak trips queensland

If you want to go on a kayaking adventure in Australia, Queensland is a great place to start. It boasts awesome beaches, rivers, beautiful coral reefs and plenty of places to explore. From calm, crystal clear seas to exciting whitewater rivers - here are our top picks for places to kayak in the sunshine state.

The Great Barrier Reef (sea kayaking)

Where: Coral Sea, off the North East Queensland Coast

Difficulty Level: Easy, Intermediate

What better place to explore on your kayak than the world’s largest coral reef system? The Great Barrier Reef is home to some of the most beautiful and easily accessible kayaking locations on Australia’s east coast. There are a number of impressive islands and beaches you can explore on your kayak – including Low Isles, the Whitsundays, Mission Beach, Dunk Island and Cape Tribulation. You can cruise the impressive reefs by getting on board with a tour group or exploring at your own pace with mates. If you are a first time kayaker you will love paddling around the Whitsundays, with a choice of 74 islands to check out and plenty of places to rest along the way. Kayaking between Mission Beach and Dunk Island is also a great route where you will spot sea turtles and rays if you are lucky.

Moreton Bay Islands, Qld (sea kayaking)

Where: 25 km East of Brisbane CBD

Difficulty Level: Easy

kayak trips queensland

Moreton Bay is just a 40 minute drive from Brisbane City and is a popular destination for diving, surfing, kayaking and sand toboggan enthusiasts. It’s not surprising considering it is lined by multiple islands; including Bribie Island , Moreton Island , the Southern Bay islands , St Helena and Peel Islands .  Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world, has mysterious shipwrecks and vibrant coral reefs just waiting to be explored. If you like surf kayaking the beaches located across the Moreton Bay Islands also have some great spots for both beginners and experienced folk. Some popular surfing beaches you might like to try on Moreton Island include North Point, Boulders and Taylor Bight. If you just want some calm kayak cruising and fishing, the sheltered side of Bribie Island is ideal for those of a more chilled nature – plus if you change your mind the other side of the island has some great surfing beaches too. So gear up and get paddling!

Tully River (whitewater kayaking)

Where: Cairns, Queensland

Difficulty Level: Difficult, Very Difficult

kayak trips queensland

If you are keen for some whitewater kayaking, Tully River is waiting for you. This is one of Australia’s most popular white water rivers with hundreds of keen rafters and kayakers experiencing the thrill every day. Only attempt this location if you are an experienced kayaker because you may encounter some tricky manoeuvres, drops and waves. Those who don’t have a lot of experience white water kayaking don’t have to miss out on the heart pumping action – you can fly down the river with one of the rafting companies that frequent the water. The Tully Hydro Power Station controls the levels of the river by releasing water at certain times during the day, making for some great pushes in the upper section. Rafting companies pay for these releases to create the best conditions for the times of day they hit the water. Water is usually released at 10am and 2pm – try to be courteous and don’t get in the way of the rafting companies since they are the ones paying for the water release!

Snapper Island (sea kayaking)

Where: 20km north of Port Douglas, at the mouth of Daintree River

Difficulty Level: Easy, intermediate

If you plan on kayaking near Snapper Island be sure to pack your snorkel. Off the Island you will find colourful corals, a wide assortment of fish and, if you are lucky, you will even see a green sea turtle. On a calm day you can start at Wonga Beach and paddle 2 hours to Snapper Island to explore or relax and lull about on the beaches. Although there are no tracks to take you through the island’s lush forests; there are four campsites that have picnic tables, a toilet and tarp poles. If you want to stay at these campsites you will need a permit and be completely self sufficient (you can find out more about camping here ).  If you want to kayak as part of a group there are also a number of kayaking tours that will take you to Snapper Island and organise camping for you.

If you plan on going on a kayaking adventure it is always better to take a mate and tell people where you are going.

Paddle Queensland

Sea Kayaking

What is sea kayaking.

A sea kayak is designed and developed for the sport of paddling primarily on the ocean but can also be used on lakes, bays & rivers. Sea kayaks are seaworthy vessels with a covered deck, at least two watertight bulkheads and the ability to incorporate a spray deck to seal off the cockpit. Sea kayaks are designed to provide high cruising speeds, large cargo capacity, ease of straight-line paddling and comfort for long journeys. If you are new to sea kayaking, we strongly recommend that you get some training via a club or a commercial operator. Always paddle to your ability and ensure your skills are appropriate before trying the more challenging trips. There are many sea kayak clubs throughout Queensland, you can find out more information about these clubs at the links above. Queensland has a coastline that has many places to explore by sea kayak. Weekend trips with overnight camping as well as extended multi day trips are popular among sea kayakers and many combine kayaking with wildlife watching. Areas such as The Whitsundays, The Keppels, Hinchinbrook Island, Fraser Island, Bribie Island, Moreton Island, Stradbroke Islands and many other places. These are fascinating places to explore and can generally be accessed by sea kayakers.

Top 5 airlines flying to Queensland

Good flight. Fiod was ready a bit late hence a hurry to finish before landing. Excellent crew and service

Good flight. The food was served a bit late, hence a hurry to finish before landing. Excellent crew and service

Great to have actual hot tastey meal on a flight. Well done

Excellent meal served with real utensils, cardboard served hot meals instead of plastic utensils and plastic covers. Quick service, friendly and accommodating stewards.

All in all the flight was good. Love the fact that for airline food it was piping hot

Seating cramped; close to toilet, foul smelling and noisy, very unhygienic and disease risk Free and paid Wi-Fi NOT accessible at all - misleading advertising Very expensive sunglasses disappeared from back seat pouch. Coffee disgusting and cold

When boarding, after business class should be premium economy, but economy class already lined-up at the gate blocking premium economy to board. Singapore airline crew should done a better job to organize this chaos :( Thank you.

It seems paying premium economy does not make difference with economy. No priority boarding, not worthy paying extra$$$ for premium economy.

Every thing was fine. Some ild classical Hindi movies should be add

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

The overall flight went well and the aircrew was pleasant.

Very comfortable Prem economy seats for a long haul flight. Had a problem with the tv that the crew fixed so was great!

The flight crew was exceptionally good. Personal needs were well met. The food choices were very nice.

Excellent. Planes are a little older and could get some refurbishment, but besides that everything was excellent.

I cancelled the flights in good time but could only get a partial refund. I was not warned of this.

Not good. Flight was purchased for my father who needed medical assistance to board and transfer due to a heart condition. No one at Hong Kong from Cathay was there to assist and he barely made the connection. When I talked to him he could barely breath and was not sure he was going to make it. Really poor service even though the ticket stated he needed a wheelchair assistance.

While I was in great pain, the seat was sufficiently comfortable to allow me to rest and not be in so much pain.

we were upgraded which was a blessing and tender mercy for us. I fell the day before and was in extreme pain from knee to shoulder. Sitting in a more comfortable seat during the flight was an unexpected blessing and experience.

Not impressed with check in desk staff at Vancouver airport. Not a professional mind service and not cared or tried to help. Don’t think I would fly with them again

Flight crew was especially thoughtful and attentive, made sure our seats were comfortable so we could rest on the long flight

The international flight from Sydney to Dallas had great food. I have travelled a lot over the years and this has been the most memorable in my experience so far.

Initial flight was cancelled so moved to an alternative flight. As a result, stuck in a middle seat. Flight then place in holding pattern prior to landing resulting in a very late trip home.

There was nothing I didn’t like, prices a little lower would help

Following a marathon flight riddled by delays and changes from Santiago, Chile, my flight to Melbourne from Sydney was on schedule but I was transferred to the next flight. The reason by ticketing and the floor manager was I missed the entry to flight by one minute! That's right, the emphasised that if I was 1 minute earlier I would be on the flight. I asked what was the point them emphasising 1minute overdue and how that helped me or the situation. They didn't care at all. Replying that if it was one minute earlier they would've done something and smirking delivering the information. Australian's do call Australia home, Qantas calls Australian's suckers.

The staff we fantastic and seemed to work very well with each other

Business lounge in Melbourne mediocre. Look at Emirates or Qatar, Qantas! Great friendly crew. Food was good but Emirates is a level above. Business seat good. But can’t compare to Qatar. Main reason for booking Qantas is loyalty and terrific connection via Perth to LHR.

It's only a short trip from Sydney to Melbourne, which i have done many times. The trip met my expectations

I really appreciated the fact that when I checked my bags at the Quantas counter after arriving from an international flight an hour early, the agent noticed I had a very long layover. He then found an earlier flight that allowed me to get to Cairns several hours earlier than I planned. That was amazing because I had already traveled over 20 hours and wasn’t looking forward to such a long layover. It allowed me to see my daughter and grandchildren much earlier (it had been two years since I visited last).

Qantas cancelled my flight for no good reason and rebooked me into a middle seat.

The flight met my expectations. It left and landed on time

a constant reminder that you need to work harder so you can avoid this airline

Note that food has to be purchased in flight. No free food. And no entertainment in flight. So I’ve treated these two items as okay which, in this case, means neutral/not applicable.

My Dad needed assistance to board the plane. The Jetstar staff were excellent with him and made the experience a lot easier😁

No food taken so can't rate also no entertainment so can't rate.

Boarding was easy and unstressful, though the early "final call" was a bit off-putting. The crew were pleasant, and the seats were comfortable. The prices for food and drink were reasonable, apart from tea and coffee, where simple percolated coffee was charged at espresso prices. Deboarding was OK, though some Jetstar passengers appear to have a bad habit of pushing forward from their assigned rows, making it more difficult to get out for passengers that have paid a premium to sit up-front. Jetstar might want to look to address this to stop it from spreading.

I got to the airport earlier than I expected, and they let me change to an earlier flight with no trouble.

It was a super crowded time to travel out of Melbourne, but the flight was OK

Worst experience ever flying Melbourne to Phuket. 5 hours delayed! Didn’t land till 1am in the morning. Staff were rude and unhelpful

Plane was late leaving darwin so we didn’t get home till 1130pm 2nd time in a fortnight that has happened. Hard when you have to work the next day

Worst airline ever. No need to go into detail as everything is terrible. Do not do it - whatever the price.

WiFi didn’t work on both sectors so made killing time harder - planes clean modern and good flight crew - would do again if WiFi works

6hrs fly they dont give you a glass of water from seoul to singapore need to buy drink and food plus they charge for bag on international fly is always Free 1 bag from seoul to singapore is Not a local fly you are traveling true asia same story from singapore to Bali no water drink after payment for bag drink cost more the regular airline Well never use this company again we use regular company like Delta korea japan China and even scoot parent company Singapore Air

We had 2 attempts to land at Singapore Changing during a thunderstorm. Everything was delayed by 1 hour plus.

Boarding was not accordingly after front seat, bmf then back seat. This delayed for at least 40mins or more. The staff at Jakarta can do better. Is chaos at the entry to board the plane. This tarnished Scoot reputation when everyone was talking about it.

The crew was not customer oriented at all, even confrontational . The aircraft needs more attention to detail as far as comfort, and the 1 hour sitting at the gate with no air is inexcusable

We flew on the 787 Dreamliner direct to main gate at KLIA2, quick entry via eGate and on the train 41mins after touchdown. Go well SCOOT

Was on scoot plus. The only good thing about the flight was the spacious seats. Tables and armrests were extremely dirty Food: bad Entertainment: non existent Wifi: unable to connect, then was painfully slow that we couldn’t even send messages Good thing we had a night flight, so we just slept throughout.

Not clear why boarding passes could only be issued at the counter and not through the kiosk. I had already check-in on the web, so waiting to obtain a boarding pass 1.5 hours before the actual flight defeats the purpose of early web check-in.

no charging point. food offering is limited and very much on the budget line. Overall is not satisfying for such a price and duration of flight.

We were delayed, but there was never any update given. Everyone was standing at the gate as boarding was supposed to commence at 13:10 for a 13:55 flight. We didn't actually start getting on the shuttles to the plane, until after 14:00. No updates, no information given at all.

Destroyed by cyclones, impacted by climate change and neglected by foreign owners – these abandoned island resorts are now an eyesore

A pool lined with green sludge, rotting roofs and termite infested buildings – this derelict island resort has become a sad tourist attraction for all the wrong reasons, and it's not an isolated case.

At least half a dozen resorts along the Queensland coast have fallen to a similar fate.

In the heart of tropical Far North Queensland, the picturesque Double Island was once a thriving hub for holiday-makers including former Hollywood power couple Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston.

The island resort, 30 minutes north of Cairns, even built a gym for actor Keanu Reeves, so frequent were his stays.

But the resort has long been in a state of disrepair, with rotting roofs punctured by falling coconuts and green sludge lining the bottom of the once sparkling pool.

An island

Brad Madgwick offers guided kayaking tours to the island, and recently incorporated the island's decay into his regular marine-life spotting adventures.

"We've always walked the shorelines looking for wildlife, but in the last few years, we have been given permission to go through the resort," Mr Madgwick said.

Buildings with damaged roofs on Double Island.

"The coconuts have taken a toll and the termites are having a good feed, it's sad really because it used to be a very glamorous resort back in the day."

The derelict state of the resort — safari-style tents covered in mould are dotted throughout — is shaping up to be one of the biggest legal battles ever held over an island in Australia.

The Queensland Government's Department of Resources will attempt to strip Hong Kong based billionaire Benny Wu of the island's lease in the Land Court in Cairns within weeks.

The pool at Double Island resort is lined with green sludge.

Mr Wu's Fortune Island Holding's is accused of non-compliance for failing to bring the facilities up to scratch and open the island to the public.

The day can't come soon enough for some local Palm Cove business owners, although opinions vary about what should happen with the island, if the state government is successful in its proceedings.

Rubbish is strewn across the grass

"When it was taken over in 2012, it was a thriving business," said local businessman Tony Richards, who would like to see a resort rebuilt.

"Nothing has been done to it since then. It's a complete bulldoze job."

The ABC has contacted Mr Wu for comment.

Paradise lost

Across the Great Barrier Reef, cyclones and neglect have left half a dozen island resorts shuttered and abandoned, with ruined infrastructure and damaged environments.

Brampton Island Resort, off Mackay, was a jewel in Queensland's tourism crown until it was bought by United Petroleum in 2010 for $5.9 million, its ocean side pool now filled with sand.

Lindeman Island in the Whitsundays, once famed for being the first Club Med in Australia, has sat in ruins since it was pummelled by Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

The Singaporean company, Well Start, has since bought the island and pledged to restore it.

Resorts on South Molle and Hook Island have also been closed for years.

The 1980s party paradise, Great Keppel (Woppa) Island off the central Queensland coast, has been laying in ruin for 15 years, with the Queensland government recently announcing a $30 million master plan including provisions for an eco-resort , new sewage system and conservation areas.

An old and abandoned building with smashed glass windows on a beach.

Meanwhile, the beleaguered Dunk Island resort off the coast of Far North Queensland, was also destroyed by Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

There are plans to open "glamping" style accommodation on the island within months, following billionaire Annie Cannon-Brook's purchase in 2022.

An old building with blue mesh fencing around it and trees

Professor Daniel Gschwind, from Griffith University's Institute for Tourism, said abandoned and closed resorts not only had an impact on the Great Barrier Reef's reputation, but Australia's broader tourism brand.

"Globally, the Great Barrier Reef is recognised as an outstanding asset, it's World Heritage listed, which in itself draws a lot of attention," Professor Gshwind said.

"The way Australia manages that asset and presents the asset to visitors is absolutely, critically important for our global reputation."

He said island resorts helped to bring in billions of tourism dollars each year and there needed to be an "expectation that lease holders fulfil their obligations".

However, he said the high cost of maintaining as well as accessing the resorts by plane or barge was impacting on owners to turn a profit, as well as skyrocketing insurance premiums.

An aerial wide shot of Dunk Island.

"So there are great obstacles to overcome, but the benefit and the value of those islands as a tourism destination really can't be overstated."

Parliamentary inquiry into Queensland islands

Queensland's Transport and Resources Committee held a parliamentary inquiry examining the economic and regulatory frameworks for Queensland's island resorts, tabling a report just over a year ago.

Eighteen recommendations were made to the state government, including cancelling the leases of developers who let the resorts fall to rack and ruin.

Several of the submissions raised concerns about foreign ownership, as well as the impact of climate change, including intense cyclones, on resort infrastructure.

Professor Tim Harcourt, chief economist at the Institute for Public Policy and Governance at the University of Technology Sydney said buying up tropical islands could be seen by some international companies as an attractive proposition.

"They've got to get their money out and they're going to put it somewhere, and buying land is the easiest thing to do," Professor Harcourt said.

He also noted the longevity and success stories of the Hamilton and Hayman Island resorts in the Whitsundays.

The Andrew Forrest-owned Lizard Island, off Cooktown in Far North Queensland has been rebuilt twice due to successive cyclones, and is enjoying strong occupancy numbers.

Orpheus Island and Pelorus Island north of Townsville have also undergone extensive renovations.

Kayaks on the water with a sunset in the background

Back on Double Island, Mr Madgwick said he would like to see the island returned to its natural splendour.

"I would love to see the island turned into a national park, with a communal kitchen, maybe a caretaker on the island, and to open it up to camping," Mr Madgwick said.

"It's a beautiful island and it should belong to the people."
