Goris (Գորիս) is a city in Southern Armenia . Goris is a favoured destination of many local and foreign tourists, with a lot of hotels and inns. The stone-pyramids of Old Kores are one of the most attractive sites in Goris.
The city was possibly the first built in a grid layout in Armenia, with a very quaint regional style of stone architecture.
It's quite difficult to get to Kapan or Meghri , and thus Iran without passing through Goris, making this the gateway of the South.
Though Goris or Tatev can be crammed into a day trip from Yerevan, it's much better to spend a few nights in the area, and along the way.
Throughout its history, Goris has also been known as Kores and Gorayk. The name Goris had many variants including: Goristsa, Kores, Gores, Gorayk, Goru, and Geryusy.
The Goris area has been settled since the Stone Age and is first mentioned in the Urartian period, when King Rusa I of Urartu who reigned between 735 and 713 BC, left a cuneiform, where he mentioned that among the 23 countries conquered by him, Goristsa country was one of them, which is believed to be Goris.
During the Middle Ages, there was a town-settlement in the eastern part of the present Goris, on the left bank of Goris river, called Kores. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, it suffered from the Seljuk, Mongol, Aq Qoyunlu and Kara Koyunlu invasions, respectively.
At the beginning of the 16th century, it became part of Safavid Persia. The current spelling of the name was first mentioned in 1624. At the beginning of the 18th century, the region was the centre of the Armenian liberation campaign led by David Bek, against Safavid Persia and the invading Ottoman Turks. In 1750, the region became part of the newly-formed Karabakh Khanate.
At the beginning of the 19th century, it became part of the Russian Empire . Under Russian rule, the town of Goris was founded in 1870 to become the centre of Zangezursky Uyezd, within the Elisabethpol Governorate of the Russian Empire. In 1876, the construction of new Goris was completed near the old town of Kores.
It was part of the first Republic of Armenia from 1918 until 1920, when following the fall of the republic, it became in 1921 the de facto capital of the self-governing regions of Daralakyaz (Vayots Dzor), Zangezur, and parts of Mountainous Artsakh, under the name of the Republic of Mountainous Armenia. However, the self-proclaimed republic only lasted months until the Red Army forced it to capitulate on 13 July 1921.
Under the Soviet rule, Goris served as a regional centre. During the 1950s, the economy of the city was boosted by the construction of many hydroelectric power plants in the area.
The last major town in Armenia on the main route linking the de facto republic of Artsakh or Nagorno-Karabakh during its existence to the outside world, Goris hit the headlines worldwide in 2023 as thousands of Karabakh Armenians poured in following the Azerbaijani takeover of their home region.
Goris stands 254 km (158 miles) south of Yerevan, in a valley surrounded by the Zangezur Mountains, through which flows the Goris River, also known as Vararak River. The town is approximately 10 km from the Azerbaijani border and about 70 km from the Iranian border, and has an average elevation of 1,385 metres above sea level.
Inside an alpine climate zone, the weather of Goris is characterized with mild snowy winters and hot summers. The average temperature in January is –1.3 °C and +19 °C in July. The annual precipitation level is between 500 and 600 mm.
From specific destinations:
Regular shared taxis (4,500 dram per person, 4½ hr) depart daily from Yerevan between 09:00 and 13:00, and return from Goris in the afternoon. (They depart Goris from an unmarked door on Syuniki St. near the post office.) The shared taxis stop for a food break at Yeghegnadzor .
Renting a car (with or without driver/guides) or taking a private cab is a more flexible, expensive option. A private transfer costs around 27,000 dram and can be arranged with stops along the way and further to Tatev. This can be worthwhile if you are in a group or short on time to see lots of places along the way.
Within Goris, it is quite easy to get around on foot.
Marshrutkas to nearby villages operate from the market on Syuniki street.
In town there's a church, a market, the Axel Bakunts Museum and some other minor sites. On the edges of town are some great rock formations which are attractive to photographers.
There are a few restaurant/cafes in town, and a few barbecue joints on the highway on the edge of town. There is also Loby Goris family restaurant that at the moment requires to make in advance reservations.
Where there is food, there is drink. Goris area is particularly famous for its mulberry vodka.
Though a bit far from capital Yerevan (254 kilometers), Goris city is a must visit. The vicinity of this beautiful city is abundant with extraordinary towers, fortresses, pyramids, caves and other miraculous formations that stun visitors with their unique beauty. The entire view seems to be created by an artist who had a perfect feel for colors, taste and hues and excellent imagination and fantasy. A look from a higher place reveals the entire panorama of the city, which is absolutely breathtaking.
The city of Goris was especially beautified and improved during the Soviet Union period. Public buildings, houses, healthcare and cultural centers were built. The city’s uniqueness is explained not only by its location but also by the history of its construction.
Goris: city’s establishment.
The city was established in 1870 and was then converted into the center of Zangezur (Syunik) region. The city’s plan was drawn upon the initiative of Stratski, the then governor of Zangezur region. And the location of the city was chosen by melik Manuchar (melik was a hereditary noble Armenian title). The governor’s father-in-law’s son then studied in the last course of the architectural faculty. One summer he was visiting his sister, whose husband (Stratski) advised to consider the planning of the newly established city as a topic for his diploma work. The governor then added that as long as he remained the governor of the region he would take care that the city be built based on his plan. Within a short period of time New Goris was built upon the young architect’s plan.
One interesting thing about the city is that for a rather long time the city was believed to be planned by foreign architects, particularly German or French. Perhaps it has to do with the city’s outstanding design.
Goris is located 1250-1520 meters above sea level. It received a status of a city in 1885. The city covers an area of 500 hectares and the number of the population is approximately 18000.
In the place of the present-day city there was a settlement and it is believed to be inhabited since the Stone Age. The name Goris was first mentioned in an Urartian inscription left by Urartian King Rusa I (735-710 BC). The inscription was found in Tsovinar Village (Gegharkunik province), and it recounts about 23 lands the king had captured. Among them was the land of “Goristsa,” which according to the scientists is the same Goris.
A milestone featuring an inscription in Aramaic was found in Goris. The inscription belongs to Armenian King Artashes II (189-160 BC).
Goris has been called differently in different periods. Among the given names were Geryusi, Gorayk, Gores, Hin Kyores (Old Kyores), Kyuris and so on.
The naming of the city is believed to mean “rocky place.” It is thought to originate from an Indo-European parent language. In this regard, “gor” means “rock” and “is, es” means “to be.”
Summers in Goris are usually warm. The average July temperature is 19 degrees Celsius. Winters are usually mild and snowy. The average January temperature is (-1.3) degrees Celsius.
The Theater of Goris was established in 1888. Nevertheless, it is supposed that the Theater of Goris has an earlier history, which goes back to hundreds of years. This supposition is explained by the cave theater found in Goris, which the locals call “amphitheater.” The stage and the seats of the amphitheater are preserved until this day.
The theater established in 1888 functioned until 1960. It became a state theater in 1936. The theater was reopened in 1985.
Saint Grigor Lusavorich Church
Saint Grigor Lusavorich (Gregory the Illuminator) Church was built within 1897-1904. The construction of the church is believed to be accomplished by Armenian-Italian Tigran Poghosyan. The church was built upon the initiative of Melik Hyuseinyans. The church was consecrated and opened in 1904. In 1995 the church was closed and remained so until the reconstruction works were launched in 1995. The church was reopened on December 20, 1997. It has a cruciform central dome structure. The church’s dome has not been built. Other than that, it has two entries – western and southern. On both sides of the Main Altar there are two vestries. To the west of the church there once was a wooden belfry, which was later ruined.
The church is a functioning one.
The Citadel of Dzagedzor or Haband
According to Stepanos Orbelyan, the Fortress of Dzagedzor was built by Patriarch Dzag. Dzagedzor means the “Canyon of Dzag.”
The Church of Saint Hripsime
Some people believe it’s called Holy Mother of God Church. Anyway, the church is located in the center of Old Goris and is supposed to be built in the 4th century in the place of a pagan temple. The church was reconstructed in the 16th century. Restoration works are currently launched.
The Chapel of Meliks
The chapel represents a vaulted single-nave basilica. It once served as a sepulcher for the meliks of Old Goris. Melik Ohan, Melik Seyin, Melik Baghr are some of the prominent meliks buried there. Around the chapel there is a medieval graveyard, which includes various valuable tombstones.
World War II Victim Memorials
There is one spring memorial dedicated to the Zangezur people who died in World War II. The memorial was erected in 1946 and the architect was Rafael Israelyan.
There is also another memorial erected in the memory of Goris people who died in World War II.
Garegin Nzhdeh Moument
The Monument to Garegin Nzhdeh, who has played an immense role in the history of Armenia, is located in the square of Avangard district. It was opened on May 28 1991.
Lastly, those visiting the city of Goris should know that this visit is usually accompanied with a visit to some of the most beautiful places of Armenia, particularly of Syunik province. So make sure you arrange your time in a way as not to be in a hurry and fully explore the beauties of Syunik province. Among those “things to see” sites are Tatev Monastery , Khndzoresk Village , Vorotan River Canyon and Karahunj .
Wander through the medieval goris cave dwellings.
Natural Feature
The Medieval Goris Cave Dwellings were inhabited by locals until the mid-twentieth century. Forests and rocks surround this unusual site that is only accessible by a swinging bridge. Once you cross the bridge, you need to ascend steep stairs in order to reach this abandoned settlement. Stroll down through those dwellings and admire the work that went into the construction.
Literature lovers will enjoy their visit to the Museum of Axel Bakounts , an Armenian prose writer, translator, film-writer, and a public activist who was murdered during Stalin’s 1937 assassinations . Bakounts was always outspoken, and his first publication, a satirical story of the Goris mayor, had him imprisoned in 1915. Afterward, he served as a volunteer in the battles of Kars, Erzurum, and Sardarabad. This lovely villa with its timber veranda, stone walls, and courtyard garden was his home. It showcases his personal memorabilia and furniture from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Natural Feature, Museum
Kotrats Caravanserai dates back to 1319 when it was built by the Orbeliani family (a Georgian noble family that branched off from the royal family of Bagrationi), as a stopover point on the Silk Road. Caravanserais used to be places where travelers and merchants, who traveled along the biggest trade road, would stop to overnight, rest for a couple of days, and sell or buy different products. The Armenian writing over the door is hardly readable, but the Persian phrase looks intact. It should be noted that there’s another caravanserai (also built by the Orbeliani family) in Armenia, located in Selim Pass.
The city of Goris is surrounded by rocks that locals call the Goris Stone Pyramids Forest. The stones create amazing labyrinths of colorful pyramids, columns, cones, and towers. The area offers completely different views of the town depending on how sunbeams fall onto the ground. This forest is simply mesmerizing and should be at the top of your Goris itinerary.
Gregory the Illuminator is the patron saint of Armenia and was the first head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. There are several churches dedicated to the patron, but the one in Goris is especially important. During the Soviet era, this and many other churches in the country were closed. Until the 1960s, this church was used as a geological museum and a grain storage facility. In 1989, the church was reopened, and seven years later, the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenians (chief bishop) was moved here.

Goris, also known as Kores, Gorayk, Goristsa, is a city 254 km from Yerevan with a population of about 22,000 people. The name of the settlement has changed many times, but regardless of the spelling, it has always been translated as "Rocky Place". Perhaps you can’t pick a more accurate name - the city is located in a mountain valley and is surrounded by dozens of mysterious caves and bizarre rocks. Breathtaking views, clean air and calm atmosphere make Goris an ideal place for those who want to escape from the hustle and bustle of Yerevan and spend time in peace and tranquility.
Goris offers guests not only peace and tranquility, but also a large number of unique sights. Whatever one may say, this territory was inhabited by our ancestors during the Stone Age, and the first written mention dates back to the 8th century BC. A rich Armenian cultural heritage is concentrated in Goris. Here they create traditional musical instruments , weave bright carpets, and every August they organize a mulberry festival, where, in addition to berries, you can try Karahunj, a home-distilled mulberry vodka known throughout the country. 1) goris himself.
Goris looks different than other Armenian cities. First of all, due to the fact that the vast majority of buildings here are built not from the usual tufa, but from stone. Grab your camera and slowly walk through the local streets. All the charm is in the details. On the way you will meet carved wooden balconies, artsy signs on the gates and extremely colorful locals. Smoothly moving around the city, climb higher into the mountains. Here you will find breathtaking views of rocks of various shapes - there is room for fantasy to roam.

The environs of Goris are famous for numerous complexes of inhabited caves. Due to the proximity of hostile neighbors (Turks and Persians), the inhabitants of these places often chose cave romance instead of comfort on the plains. How to be a good neighbor in Yerevan wrote here .
Shelters are interesting because they are located at a height. It was possible to get home only with the help of makeshift elevators - often just ropes that were tied to thresholds. So it was easier to get rid of uninvited guests.
At one time, Khndzoresk was the largest settlement in Eastern Armenia. In 1913, 1,800 houses and even seven schools were hollowed out in the vertical city. In the Soviet years, all residents were relocated to more familiar conditions, and excursions began to be led to Khndzoresk.
True, in order to see the unique city, the faint of heart will have to close their eyes and overcome two hundred meters along a suspension bridge over the gorge. But it's worth it.

An hour's drive from Goris towards Yerevan, on the edge of a cliff above the picturesque gorge of the Javarkhan River, is the Tatev monastery complex of the late 9th century. For centuries, this place remained the spiritual center of medieval Armenia.
What do Armenians confess?
In the 10th century, it had about a thousand inhabitants and was the largest among the 48 monasteries of the Syunik kingdom. The monastery survived a large number of raids by the Persians and Turks, but suffered the most during the 1931 earthquake. Now the temple has been restored and is open to tourists.
Inside the building there is twilight and special peace. The monastery has a large number of secret passages and vaults, so the place will be interesting not only for pilgrims, but also for lovers of secrets and mysterious theories. Guests can walk around the territory, visit an oil press, cells, a refectory in the rock, as well as see the most beautiful mountain ranges from the walls of the complex.

In 2010, in order to make it more convenient for tourists to get to the monastery, a reversible cable car was extended to Tatev. Yes, they were so carried away that it became the longest in the world. The length of the route is almost six kilometers, the cabins travel at an altitude of 320 meters, and the travel time one way is 15 minutes. There is, however, one drawback. Only two trailers run on the cable car, so sometimes you have to wait for your turn for about an hour.
This smallness is compensated by free Wi-Fi at the departure station and more than - the views from the trailers. On the way, a view of Ararat, the Karahunj megalithic complex, the Khor Virap Monastery and the famous village of Areni with its fortresses, necropolises and the oldest winery in the world opens up.
Opening hours of the Wings of Tatev cable car: from 9:00 to 19:45 (Tue-Sun, Mon - day off).
Prices: from March to November - 7,000 AMD round-trip. December-February - 5000 AMD.

Satan's Bridge or Devil's Bridge - such a "romantic" name was given to the natural arch along which the Goris-Tatev highway passes. This natural bridge is 30 meters long and 50-60 meters wide. The place is interesting in that mineral water flows right from the cracks in the rocks. Over the centuries, iron-rich mineral water has painted the walls of the Vorotan Canyon in pink and emerald colors.
The Devil's Bridge is decorated with huge stalactites that hang down along the edges. You can admire all this splendor while lying in natural baths, which were formed from a constant flow. Be sure to bring your swimming trunks, but don't expect the water to be hot. The temperature in summer is about 21 degrees. On a hot day, it will definitely be nice to freshen up.
Some travelers say that a local resident lives at the springs, always ready to show the “secret path” to the riverbed. Those who wish can go down the vertical wall and the metal cable and see the "secret" stalactites and another source.

A trip to Goris will definitely not disappoint travelers. The place and its surroundings offer a lot of interesting sights. In the city itself, there are several dozen guest houses and mini-hotels where you can stay for a couple of nights. The only downside is the relative remoteness of the location. We would advise you to go on a trip to Goris as part of an excursion or on a rented car. So you can see the most picturesque places that lie outside the main routes.
If you have already visited Goris and are looking for where to go again, you can always ask for help from online guide from the Move2Armenia portal. It contains all the most interesting things about the suburbs of Yerevan.
Tatev is probably the most famous monastery in Armenia. Below you can find a guide to Goris and visiting Tatev monastery.
Goris is quite possibly the most stunning city in Armenia and is the base from where to travel to Tatev monastery. The city alone is nothing special–it’s all about location, location, location. The city is encircled by mountains, some of which rise up right from the city’s perimeter.
Below you can find a guide to visiting Goris, Armenia. This guide to Goris includes things to do in Goris, where to stay in Goris, and how to get from Goris to Tatev Monastery.
Goris from above, a most acceptable view we’d say.
Visiting old goris.
The mountains around Goris are covered in towering limestone spires, chock-full of cave dwellings. The cave-city complex is known as “Old Goris”, as the caves used to serve as homes until the 18th century… or so the guides say. Though many of the caves are now bare, there’s still a decent number of resourceful people that have built modern day houses up against the spires, so they can continue to make use of the caves. You can literally see the past meeting the present as you wander throughout the rocky outcrops.
Cave people of Goris, 2016 A.D.
You can easily spend an entire day just wandering among the rocks along the edges of the city. We did encounter some kind of marked path in one or two places, but it’s not really necessary. There are ridges to troop along all over the mountainsides, thanks to years and years of people and various hoofed creatures wandering along the slopes.
Spires, spires, everywhere.
Checking out the abandoned cave estate. Could work with a little TLC, but the ceilings were a bit too low for modern-day humans…
Be careful running around on the top of the mountain–it’s a steep drop, and there’s not much in the way of decent paths once you climb up high enough.
Pro tip: if you have a chance to buy a bottle of wine while passing through Areni, home of one of the oldest wineries in the world, save it for Goris and go for a super epic picnic atop the mountain! It’s a great (and cheap) way to spend the afternoon. Just be careful not to fall over the edge when you’re stumbling down the mountain 😉
An epic picnic for an epic location. And by “epic picnic”… we mean wine and pretzels. We are on a budget, after all!
Wine-ing and winding our way down the mountain.
Granted, we don’t really go to museums much. But if you’re interested in Armenian poetry, this museum might just be for you. Axel Bakounts was a controversial figure, spending time in jail for his mocking of the mayor of Goris, and ultimately murdered in 1937 by Stalinist’s. His museum is set in a lovely villa with a timber veranda.
Tatev Monatery is Armenia’s most famous site–an old monastery on a plateau overlooking a vast gorge. Many people solely travel to Armenia to visit Tatev monastery.
Some quick facts: its construction began in the 9th century, it used to house one of the most important medieval monasteries of Armenia, and is now marginally more famous because it’s at the end of the longest cable car line in the world, which clocks in at 6 kilometers.
The view from the Wings of Tatev, the longest cable car in the world.
But all you need to know for now is that Tatev is most definitely, undeniably, the tits. I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.
The view: 10/10
A moment of serenity inside Tatev.
To get to Tatev, we recommend you take a taxi to the Wings of Tatev , the Guinness World Record-listed 5.7km cable car starting in Halidzor. It’s also possible to take a car/taxi up to the monastery, but the cable car offers much more epic views… and cheesy music combined with overly posh British narration as you soar through the skies.
A taxi to Halidzor from Goris cost about 2500 AMD one-way. A ride on the Wings of Tatev isn’t cheap, at 5500/7000 AMD one/two-way as of April 2019, but the views are definitely worth it.
We opted for a one-way ticket and hiked most of the way back to the base station of the cable car, from where we took a taxi back to Goris. The walk was a very hilly and zig-zagging 10km. If you’re walking, be sure to stock up on water before embarking on your mountainous voyage. We forgot to (derp), and it was a struggle.
Taking in the view? Or exhausted from dehydration? You decide.
The walk, though long, is worth your while. You pass a series of pools near a feature called Devil’s Bridge that you can theoretically swim in (if you dare). You’ll also get a view of some abandoned monastic cloisters, and pass a Lord of the Rings-like watchtower atop another mountain.
Nothing like crystal clear, scum green water to take a refreshing dip in, eh eh?
The views from the watchtower, about 3/4 of the way back to Halidzor, are epic, and completely justified our trek. Not that justification was necessary– we’re die-hard hikers , so walking that far was no big deal. /sarcasm
The Harsnadzor watchtower, with clear views to Tatev. Not sure if necessary given Tatev’s strategic location, but so be it.
If you’re not interested in the long slog back, just lurk for a while around the Tatev complex. As the day goes on, there will be a decent number of taxis driving to/from the area, as well as a few enterprising Armenians that will be happy to pretend they are taxis for a short while.
Goris and Tatev are definitely in my top three favorite sites of Armenia (the other two being Haghpat monastery and Yerevan, Armenia’s capital city ). If you ever visit the country, make sure to make the time stop by–you’ll be glad you did.
Goris is a great base to visit Tatev monastery from. It’s also in a beautiful location, and we recommend taking a day or two to relax and enjoy nature.
And so end our guide to visiting Goris and Tatev Monastery. Let us know in the comments if you have any more questions.

I’m one of the Peace Corps volunteers living in Goris, or as we say, winning the PC lottery. 🙂 It is beautiful here! One thing, Goris actually is special in itself, as the architecture is unique to Goris. Perhaps you noticed the amazing masonry detail, with every rock outlined in mortar, and the red metal roofs. The “new” town was designed by a German architect in the 1800s, making it Armenia’s only planned city. I’m wondering what kind of camera/lens you used to get those amazing wide angle shots. iPhone?
Getting to live in Goris definitely doesn’t sound too shabby! Curious as to what locations people consider to be “losing” the lottery (if you’re comfortable answering)? We did notice that Goris adheres to much more of a sensible grid system than in other cities, so that’s very interesting to hear.
As for the photos, I use a Nikon D7100, always with an 18-200mm lens. It has wide angle and light telephoto abilities 🙂 For the panoramas, I stitch several images together using Adobe Lightroom.
Hi! there. A couple of queries that I can use your help with regarding our visit to Armenia (and subsequently Goris) next week. I was quite enchanted by your trek down from Tatev Monastery and we want to attempt the same. And hence these questions. 1. How long did it take you to reach Halidzor on your trek back? 2. Is the path back easy to follow, or the likelihood of getting lost (not the enjoyable kind like when done on purpose) and stranded, high? We plan to travel back to Yerevan via public transport and so don’t want to jeopardize our chances of taking return transport. Thanks and regards.
Hiya. Reaching Halidzor took around 2-4 hours (we’re not entirely sure anymore), walking along the road. Make sure to bring enough water, as there aren’t many shops. The is a road that snakes down, up, and around, and if you follow this you’re not likely to get lost. You might be lucky enough to get a lift, although it’s not uncommon for people who picked you up to later tell you they are a taxi. It’s a nice enough walk, and the lookout tower offers a great view of the valley.
Gee! Thanks. You made it easier to understand the daunting task ahead. Will pack a small picnic as well. Was hoping it wouldn’t be more than 2 hours, but hey will try and attempt it for as long as we can and when we can’t anymore will hitch-hike, even if it turns out to be a taxi. I am sure it will be lesser than what they charge at the top….(may end up saving some AMD) hopefully. What say?
That sounds about right. Just remember that there’s always a chance traffic is slow, though.
Will keep that in mind. Thanks a ton for your thoughtful and immensely helpful tips. Can hardly wait for the adventure to begin. 🙂
Hi I am going to be in Armenia in June. I am going to be spending a day in Goris, and was wondering if I’d be able to explore the rock caves and do Tatev Monastery in one day?
I was in Tatev today, the teleferic is now 7000/5500 AMD, I paid a taxi 2500 to go and found a car to come back at 2000 AMD
Thanks so much for this post. I am planning a trip to Armenia next year. Was looking at doing a day to of Tatev from Yeravan, but after reading this think I will public transport to Goris and stay a few days. Taxi to the cable way and do it myself. Think this will even work out better priced than doing a USD$150 pp day tour. Thanks!
I read about Goris in Galina Vishnevskaya’s awesome autobiography. Evdiently her group was treated well during their stay (1965 ?). What a precious place ! Thanks for the write-up … and to all those in the region, sorry for the US involvement in destabilizing the region via the CIA and the NED. DON- activist in Fort Lauderdale

Goris tourism.
Goris, a picturesque town nestled in the heart of Armenia, is a hidden gem that beckons travelers seeking a unique and culturally rich experience. Situated in the Syunik Province, this charming town is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, historical significance, and warm hospitality. The city of Goris is the oldest among the cities in the Marz of Syunik. It is situated in the valley of the Vararak River, in the southern part of Syunik volcanic highland. The rocks surrounding the city are known as “The Goris Stone Forest”. They are shaped like amazing labyrinths of colored columns, pyramids, cones and towers. These figures combine light and shadow to make an incredible impression. The hilly Goris landscape is indented with gorges from which the rocks, like outlandish plants, reach out towards the sun, opening new and new fantastic landscapes, sometimes resembling extraterrestrial ones. The Goris Stone Forest looks like a film set of some extra-atmospheric blockbuster, and is the main attraction of the city.
For centuries, people lived in the caves near the modern town of Goris. These were comfortable and large caves, with walls covered in handmade carpets. In the mid-19th century, students came from Germany and planned the city of Goris, laying out the straight streets and orderly lanes that distinguish the city today. The houses from this period feature round river rocks, held together by cement.
Today, Goris is a lovely city, surrounded by tall, green peaks. The streets are quiet, and the city is filled with calm orchards and parks.

Round-trip tickets are exceeding dh2,800 during the upcoming national day holiday.

As airfares to popular visa-free destinations such as Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan soar by as much as 300 percent during the upcoming National Day holiday, with round-trip tickets to these countries exceeding Dh2,800, there are other destinations that provide visa-free entry for UAE residents (with certain nationalities exempted) that might offer more affordable travel options.
“Travel during the National Day holiday from November 30 to December 3 is always in high demand,” said Bharath Aidasani, managing partner at Pluto Travels. “And during the last long weekend of the year, many residents plan well in advance, but this year, the surge in prices to popular destinations from the UAE has caught everyone by surprise,” said Aidasani.
However, travel industry executives told Khaleej Times that visa-free countries for UAE residents of many nationalities can explore destinations like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Seychelles, and Zanzibar where the ticket prices are comparatively lower at the moment.

“Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan have always been in demand. There are other destinations like Uzbekistan, Seychelles, Zanzibar, and Kazakhstan preferred by residents and the airfares have not increased as of now,” said Pavan Poojary, travel consultant at Luxury Travel.
“So these visa-on-arrival countries for most of the nationalities residing in the UAE can be perfect destinations during the National Day holiday,” said Poojary.
For those looking for a beach getaway, “Seychelles and the Maldives are top choices for UAE residents,” said Aidasani. Both destinations offer pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a serene environment perfect for relaxation. “However, with the increasing demand during the long weekend, we urge travellers to secure a seat well in advance,” said Aidasani.
For travellers seeking adventure and breathtaking mountain landscapes, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan offer stunning options. “The travel time to these countries is less than four hours. And due to a limited number of days off, travellers don’t want to waste too much of their time on travelling,” said Geoffrey Salatan, CEO of Geof Travel.
These destinations are known for their rugged terrains, majestic peaks, and unique cultural experiences. “The cool weather and diverse activities at these destinations make them attractive choices for UAE residents,” said Salatan.
According to industry executives, Zanzibar is gaining a lot of interest among the UAE residents. “Zanzibar offers some of the most picturesque landscapes in the world. Many UAE residents prefer a different experience,” said Poojary.
Industry executives said that they are already witnessing a rush of inquiries as UAE residents finalise their holiday plans.
“Enquiries for these destinations have already started, and we're seeing a steady increase in demand,” said Aidasani. “The fares are expected to rise even further as the holiday approaches, so we advise travellers to book as soon as possible to avoid paying exorbitant prices.”
