Full Day Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari

We spent a month in Z A and the full day safari with David comes close to being our best day there. He shared just the right amount of information about different wildlife habits, lingered long enough for everyone to get photos and to explain why some of the things we saw were so special and why other things were more day to day habits. One highlight was watching a Cape Buffalo giving himself a mud bath! The small size of the vehicles provide a good viewing spot no matter where you're seated and the lunch was yummy. Book early!

We really enjoyed this Safari. One of the reasons was our guide David.  We saw so many animals, some we have not seen on previous Safaris, but above all, we were thrilled by the knowledge and way of explaining things from David.  He shared many stories and combined them with facts. Perfect! A real gem for us and a must do in our perspective.

What an incredible day in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Reserve. So many adrenaline fueled moments, so much excitement, so many memories!

Zayne was attentive to our needs throughout the day and made the whole safari viewing experience a very special one. As a wildlife photographer, I am quite demanding on positioning etc, and our guide Zayne was exceptionally patient and professional throughout.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park, South Africa: The Complete Guide

hluhluwe imfolozi park tour

Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park

Located in the heart of historic Zululand in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province , Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve on the continent. It has set the standard for conservation efforts in Africa since 1895, and was instrumental in the fight to save the white rhino from extinction in the the mid-20 th century. Today, visitors travel to this undulating, hilly wilderness to marvel at its abundant wildlife on guided game drives and multi-day walking safaris. It remains one of the best places in Africa to see wild rhinos.

About the Park

The land that now makes up Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is steeped in history, with archaeological sites dating back to the Iron Age. Functioning as a royal hunting ground for the rulers of the Zulu kingdom , the Hluhluwe and Imfolozi game reserves were later established in 1895. It wasn't until the addition of the Corridor Game Reserve in 1989 that they would merge into a single park.

The initial purpose of the parks was to conserve the white rhino. At the beginning of the 20 th century, there were just 10 white rhinos left, all of which lived in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. The rhinos thrived under the park’s protection, and in the 1950s, Operation Rhino was launched. This project saw the relocation of breeding rhinos from Hluhluwe-Imfolozi to other national parks and protected areas of South Africa. By 2010, the national population stood at 17,000 white rhinos, making Operation Rhino one of the most successful conservation stories of all time.

Unfortunately, poaching continues to threaten South Africa’s rhinos, and the park’s governing body, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife , employs stringent anti-poaching methods. Today the park covers a total area of roughly 370 square miles, divided between the Imfolozi area in the south (primarily savannah grassland between the Black and White Imfolozi Rivers) and the forested hills of the Hluhluwe area in the north.

Diverse Wildlife

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi’s wide range of habitats provide a home for 80 different mammal species, including all members of the Big Five . Both black and white rhinos are seen here, although the latter is spotted far more frequently as the park continues to have one of the healthiest white rhino populations in South Africa. It is also a sanctuary for the endangered African wild dog, and supports key predators like the cheetah and spotted hyena. Equally abundant are prey animals, including zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, and a host of antelope (most notably the nyala, which occurs in large numbers here). Hippos and Nile crocodiles inhabit the park’s rivers and dams.

Important Bird Area

Representing around 46 percent of all species found in the southern African sub-region, more than 400 different types of birds have been recorded in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi. It’s the most important site in the province for the conservation of large raptors like bateleur, martial, and tawny eagles. During the rainy season, water-dwelling birds such as storks, herons, and pelicans flock to the park. Globally-threatened birds like the southern bald ibis and the southern ground hornbill mark this park an Important Bird Area . Additionally, keep an eye out for endangered and critically-endangered vultures, including the white-backed, lappet-faced, and white-headed vulture.

Top Things to Do

Game Drives: The most popular way to look for Hluhluwe-Imfolozi’s incredible wildlife is on a guided game drive. Two game drives depart daily from the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife camps : one at dawn and one in the late afternoon (these are the best times for spotting animals in action). You can also drive your own vehicle around the park on a self-drive safari , giving you the opportunity to explore 190 miles of roads at your own pace. Make sure to stop off at the viewing hides strategically located at the park’s pans and waterholes.

Bush Walks: If you want to venture out into the bush on foot, you can do so on the guided game walks offered at both Ezemvelo camps. You’ll be accompanied by an experienced armed ranger who will tell you all about the park’s flora, fauna, and history along the way. For those that have the time and the stamina, there are also five guided, multi-day Wilderness Trails . These range from two to four nights and allow you to immerse yourself completely in the park’s untamed interior landscapes.

The Centenary Center: The Centenary Center houses the park’s Game Capture Complex, where captured animals are kept for the purposes of veterinary assistance or relocation to other parks. Head to the interpretation center to find out about the methods used to safely and humanely catch and transport different wild animals. The Centenary Center is also home to a community-run craft market—a great place to meet members of the neighboring Zulu villages and to shop for souvenirs in South Africa.

Where to Stay

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has two safari camps in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. The first, Hilltop , is located in the Hluhluwe section on the edge of a forested hill with beautiful valley views. Accommodation ranges from simple rondavels with a communal kitchen to an eight-sleeper bush lodge with a private chef and tour guide. The second Ezemvelo camp, Mpila , is located in the Imfolozi area on a high ridge. It offers one, two, and three-bedroom self-catering chalets; two-bedroom safari tents; and a range of eight-person private bush lodges.

For the most luxurious stay, make a reservation at Rhino Ridge . As the only private lodge located within the park’s boundaries, it offers a choice of 5-star rooms and bush villas. The Honeymoon Villas are the most decadent, with a private plunge pool and stunning park views. Rhino Ridge also has an infinity pool and a gourmet restaurant and bar. Activities offered include guided game drives and bush walks, spa treatments overlooking the lodge waterhole, and traditional Zulu homestays.

Weather and When to Go

The park has a subtropical climate with two distinct seasons . Summer, which lasts from October to March, is hot, humid, and sees regular rainfall. Winter lasts from April to September and is mild and dry. On average, the minimum temperature in the park is 55 degrees Fahrenheit while the average maximum is 91 degrees.

Typically, winter is considered the best time for game viewing. This is because the dry weather causes animals to congregate around the rivers and waterholes, making them easier to find. Plus, clear, sunny days make for great photographs.

Summer has its benefits as well. The landscapes are lush during the annual rains, and the arrival of seasonal migrants makes this the best time for birding. Resident birds are also more impressive in their breeding plumage. Although this is the rainy season, downpours are interspersed with periods of bright sunshine. Be aware that parts of the park are in a low-risk malaria area , and mosquitoes are more prevalent in summer. Before traveling, make sure to consult your doctor about whether or not you should take anti-malaria medication.

Getting There

The nearest international airport is King Shaka International Airport in Durban . It's approximately 170 miles to the park; drive northeast along the N2 highway before turning left onto the R618 at Mtubatuba. The ride takes between two and a half to three hours. To get to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi,

The nearest city is Richards Bay, which has its own domestic airport. From there, the directions to the park are the same as from Durban, though the journey time is reduced to just over an hour.

If you’re traveling south from Mkhuze Game Reserve or the Swaziland border, drive along the N2 until you reach Hluhluwe town and then follow signs for the park. From Sodwana Bay and the Mozambique border, follow the R22 south to Hluhluwe town. Be sure to plan your journey carefully, as gate times for the park are strictly enforced. The gates are open from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer (November 1 – February 28), and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in winter (March 1 – October 31).

Visitors to Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park will need to pay a daily conservation fee of 240 rand ($13.29) per adult, or 120 rand ($6.38) per child. Discounts apply for South African and SADC nationals. Guided game drives from either of the Ezemvelo camps are charged at 720 rand ($38.28) for two people, with a supplement of 360 rand ($19.14) for each additional person. Guided bush walks are charged at 300 rand ($15.95) per person, while the Wilderness Trails start at 2,805 rand ($149.14) per person. All Wilderness Trails are fully catered and are available for individuals aged 16 and older. For a full list of park rates, visit the Ezemvelo website .

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Vervet Monkey

A Complete Guide to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve: On Safari & Beyond

If you’re after an unforgettable experience in South Africa, look no further than the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve! From rhinos and elephants to birds and antelope, this is one of the most diverse wildlife reserves in the country.

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Giraffe

Whether it’s your first time in South Africa or you’re a repeat visitor, you’ll be in for an unforgettable experience. This article will give you all the information you need to plan your trip and make sure it’s as enjoyable as possible.

So read on, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

Where to Find Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi is located in Zululand, a region in the eastern South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. It sits on the Hluhluwe River in the north end, and the Black Umfolozi River and White Umfolozi River in the south.

It lies just south of the town of Hluhluwe, a small municipality that is considered the tourist center for the area. Some may know it as the place where the 2000 movie I Dreamed of Africa was filmed.

How to get there

The reserve is a 2.5-3 to 3 hour drive from Durban, or a 7 hour drive from Johannesburg. Even closer is Richards Bay, just over an hour’s drive away. It’s also just a 54 minute drive from the holiday town of St. Lucia – not to be confused with the Caribbean getaway of the same name!

It’s clear across the country from Cape Town, however, and about a 19 hour drive. If this is where you’re coming from, you may want to consider flying Johannesburg, renting a car, and driving the rest of the way.

Another option is to catch a connection flight from Johannesburg to Durban or Richards Bay, and make the shorter drive from there.

Getting In: The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park Gates

There are 3 gates in the park, and which one you use will depend where you’re coming from:

• Memorial Gate is the only gate in the northern Hluhluwe section of the park • Cengeni Gate is the farthest south in the iMfolozi section. • Nyalazi Gate is technically on the iMfolozi side, but it lies very near the midpoint of the park.

2023 Fees for international visitors:

US$15.42 (R260) per adult and US$7.71 (R130) per child under 12. Pay by credit, debit card, or cash. Keep your receipt! It will be needed to exit. If you don’t have it, you will need to pay a fine. SA Residents are discounted 50%.

About Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

Established in 1895, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is also known as Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park or “HiP” (said “H-i-P”). In fact there are a few alternate spellings that you might run across. This is quite common in Africa, don’t let it confuse you!

This area began as 2 separate sites – the Hluhluwe Valley Reserve and the iMfolozi Junction Reserve. Even today, the northern side of the park is referred to as Hluhluwe and the southern side as iMfolozi.

HiP is the oldest official nature reserve in Africa, known not only for its concentration and variety of wildlife, but also for its heroic conservation efforts.

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi White Rhino

It’s thanks to these efforts that today the park has one of the world’s largest populations of white rhinos – at least 1,600 – where they had once been virtually eliminated by hunters. The critically endangered black rhinos can be spotted here, too!

While in the park you can learn more about HiP’s efforts at the Centenary Center. At its animal holding facility, visitors can get a closer look at rhinos and various antelope species while they wait to be transported to homes in other parks. Find out more in the attached museum and information center , then browse the first-class craft market for something to remember your visit by.

In addition to the park’s own work, there are conservation groups that work within HiP to help protect and preserve animals such as lions, cheetahs, and the critically endangered African Wild Dog. You can even plan ahead to volunteer with one of these groups .

This incredible reserve covers around 960 km² (370.7 miles²) of land. It’s one of the few parks in the area where all of the iconic Big 5 can be seen—rhinos, elephants, lions, leopards and buffalo’s—as well as a huge variety of other wildlife.

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Wild Dogs

In total, the area is home to 84 types of mammals and 350 species of birds, as well as hundreds of different kinds of amphibians and reptiles. As well, some 1200 plant species flourish in the park.

The stunning terrain itself consists of rolling hills dotted with thorny acacia trees, hilly grasslands, and rough bushveld. The three separate rivers are the jewels in the park’s crown. This fascinating ecosystem is the ideal setting for a safari adventure.

You’re going to love it!

Safari in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi

As you can imagine, with the abundance of animals and the spectacular landscapes, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is an amazing place for a safari. You can explore in your own car, or search through the variety of game drives and activities available to choose from in the camps.

I suggest that, if you don’t have time for all of these,  you take advantage of the opportunity to indulge in a self-drive safari! You can stay at a sighting for as long as you like, move on when you’re ready, and you won’t have to worry about getting a window seat on a safari vehicle.

Set out early in the morning in your own vehicle for the most exciting sightings. You could come across enormous elephant and buffalo herds, or lions feeling sprightly after a night of hunting.

You might decide to spend a fascinating afternoon at the Centenary Center while the animals snooze through the heat of the day. Head out again on safari again in the evening when it’s cooler, and the wildlife is up and feeling lively.

Remember, to avoid being eaten while you’re out watching for animals,  stay in your vehicle, unless you’re at an area where your map or the signs tell you it’s ok to get out, such as at picnic spots. Even then, look around before you get out of your car.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to safari in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi?

While the park itself may be gorgeously wild, the roads are generally well-maintained. Though the majority of them are gravel, you should have no problem navigating them with a 2WD vehicle.

However, if you will be driving a 4WD and want to have a little extra fun, there is a 4×4 route in the southern iMfolozi section. It’s a loop west of the Bhjane hide called Okhukho.

It’s not too crazy, but it’s a bit of fun, and there are often lions sighted from the road. When you enter the park, be sure to purchase a map at the gate reception or at the curio shop. This route will be marked on it, along with all of the other places you need to know about.

This map will also show the few areas where extra caution should be taken during heavy rains, especially in a 2WD. These areas are signed, as well, so look out for those if it looks like it’s been rainy..

Even though they aren’t a necessity, one advantage to having a 4WD is the extra height of the vehicle. From the higher vantage point of a 4WD, it can be easier to spot wildlife that’s in the grass or on hilly ground. I’ve done both, and I recommend a 4WD for this reason alone!

The best routes for a self-drive safari

One of the reasons Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is so popular is that it’s so easy to indulge in an amazing self-drive safari. And with its two rivers and more open grassland, the southern iMfolozi section is a great place to start.

The Sontuli Loop, in the northern part of this section, runs close to the Black iMfolozi River, which is the perfect place to see wildlife wonder in for a drink. And because you’re calling the shots, you can stay here and watch for as long as there is something to see – no rush!

If you’re anything like me, you might spend hours watching elephants come and go. But always be sure not to block other vehicles from the view. Give everyone a chance if there happens to be a lot of traffic.

Routes 17 and 21 are also excellent trails. Each of these has a selection of hides to watch from, and are good routes along which to see one of my favorite animals, African Wild Dogs, as well as big cats like lions and cheetahs.

Catching sight of rhinos is definitely a highlight! You might lose count of how many you see. These guys are a real live testament to the success of HiP’s conservation efforts.

Once you’ve driven these roads, carry on and cover as many others as you have time for! There are no bad trails in the park. But again, if there have been heavy rains, watch for the caution sign when you turn onto new roads.

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Lions

Be sure to ask any of the safari game drive rangers that you see where the best sightings have been. They are very friendly, and always willing to point you in the direction of where the animals have been spotted on any given day.

If you are going to be in the park for more than a day, a great option is to take one of the game drives offered by the park, as well as enjoying a self-drive tour. This is a great way to get the lay of the land, and to benefit from the expertise of the guides.

They know where you’re most likely to spot certain animals, for example in the grass or up in the trees. They can also share facts about the park and its wildlife that you might not discover otherwise.

Other ways to enjoy the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

• Self-guided hikes: There are 3 trails through safe areas that visitors are permitted to hike on their own. If this sounds like your cup of tea, you can pick up the guides at the gate reception where you got your map.

• Guided hikes: Hikes from 2 hours to several days, accompanied by expert guides are available. The longer hikes include all of your food, water, and equipment. Some have burros packing everything, others have you carrying your own gear. This is a spectacular way to get to know the park, and I highly recommend them!

Some of the longer guided hikes are seasonal, available only from mid-March to mid-December. Also, some seasonal hikes are done only on weekends. Choose the right one and check the schedule on the KZN website .

These hikes are amazing – if you have time, do as many as you can!

• Game Drives: Day and night game drives are offered to visitors, with expert guides who know the park and its animals inside and out. Game drives are available at Hluhluwe Hilltop and Imfolozi Mpila camps.

Guided hike and game drive bookings are made on arrival, on a first come, first served basis. The alternative is to book in advance with your accommodation. You can do this from the KZN homepage .

How long should I spend in HiP?

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is a large park and you could easily spend a few days here. However, if your time is limited, be sure to allow yourself at least 3 hours to explore the Sontuli Loop and connecting routes.

It’s absolutely worth your time, even if you can only make a day trip here from St. Lucia. You can self-drive or book a day safari with an outside company, your choice.

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve Accommodation

Several options are available if you decide to stay in HiP. Note that there are no campsites where you can set up your own tent.

If you intend to self-cater, it’s best to bring food into the park with you. You won’t find the supplies available in the park sufficient to keep you alive for long. Hluhluwe does have a restaurant, though.

The Southern iMfolozi Section :

This is the open, grassy section of the park, with woodlands and rivers running through low areas, and rolling hills breaking up the landscape. Accommodations here are basic but still comfortable.

• Mpila Main Camp has cottages, chalets, and safari (permanent) tents for up to 7 people. • There are also 4 lodges in various areas of iMfolozi, 3 of which include the services of a cook/caretaker for your stay. Find all the details, including current pricing, on this page . When you’re ready to book your stay, do it from right here .

The Northern Hluhluwe Section :

This section has more of a rough and wild feeling, cooler in the mountainous region. Accommodation options lean away from basic, more toward bliss.

• Hilltop Camp has self catering and non self-catering units, including rondavels, which are round huts, and chalets for up to 4 people. • The stunning Mtwazi Lodge was the original home of Hluhluwe’s warden. It has room for 8, and includes a lovely, large veranda and a tropical garden. • Rhino Ridge is a luxury safari lodge. If you’ve dreamed of living in a little bit of splendor while in South Africa, this lodge will make your dream come true.

Hilltop Camp is also equipped with a restaurant and pub, as well as a small store for necessities and a curio shop.

Find Hluhluwe accommodation details and current pricing on this page , and book your stay right here .

Camp Gate Times:

The gate times change according to the time of the year:                         Oct – Mar                         5 am – 7pm                         Apr – Sept                        6 am – 6 pm

Gate times are strictly enforced! You will be charged a fine if you are late coming through a camp gate.

* Most camps are surrounded by an electrified fence to keep larger animals like elephants out, but many other animals might be seen in camp. Don’t leave food out, and just be aware when you’re outside. This is a part of the fun, and seeing a hyena sniff past your veranda is just a reminder of the wonders of Africa!

The Best Time to Go to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Buffalo

Prime time for a visit to HiP is during the winter months of May through September. This is a dry period in this area. That means that there will be fewer places for the animals to go to drink, making their movements more predictable.

The foliage is also much less dense during this time, giving wildlife less camouflage.

In short – the wildlife is easier to find, and easier to see!

Tips for Visiting the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

  • If you plan on spending a few days here, it may be worthwhile for you to join the Rhino Club . For US$18.70 (R320) for people under 60 years and US$15.20 (R260) over 60, it gives you free entry into this park, as well as other Ezemvelo KZN parks, for 365 days.

You will also receive a discount on your accommodations and your activities if you stay in HiP.

  • If HiP is one of many parks that you will be visiting in South Africa, I recommend that you get a SANParks Wild Card . The card will give you free access to most South African parks for 365 days.

  • The northern Hluhluwe side tends to be the busier section. South, in iMfolozi, there are more open spaces and more water sources, which make for better wildlife viewing.

• Vervet monkeys are common all around the park, and they want what you have! Keep your car windows up when you’re not in it, or they will help themselves to any items or food they find inside. This goes for your accommodations, too. Lock the doors – they can open doors, but they haven’t figured out the locks yet!

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Vervet Monkey

• You can find a lot of information in the EKZN Wildlife document here . This includes things like cancellation policies, accommodation details and prices, and senior and student discounts.

• HiP is in a low-risk malaria zone, but there can be a lot of mosquitos. Be very sure to bring insect repellent with DEET along. Malaria medication may also be necessary – opinions on this vary. Visit your doctor or local travel clinic for help in making that decision.

  • Obey the speed limits in the park – 40 km/hr – for your safety and that of the animals.

In conclusion: Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Imfolozi, HiP – a spectacular destination whatever you decide to call it. Of all the choices you have for game parks in South Africa, HiP should be at the top of your list.

From spotting the Big Five to exploring its diverse terrain, visiting the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is an experience of a lifetime. Whether you’re looking for a thrilling adventure or simply some time to relax, this park has something for you.

With its convenient location, wide variety of activities, and abundance of wildlife, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is the perfect place to make the most of your time in South Africa.

Whether you have all the time in the world, or just a few hours. Happy travels!

We saw a variety of bucks and birds, buffalos, monkeys, wart hogs, hippos, a crocodile and 4 rhinos passed right next to our vehicle. Siya was very informative and we all learned something new about some of the animals we saw, unfortunately no Elephants but we did see a Rhino which is a tick off my husbands bucket list. Beautiful sunset drive with a stop for coffee at an amazing viewpoint. Would definitely recommend to a friend, make sure to take a jacket. Thank you for a wonderful evening. • 505christiner 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Guides were great! We booked this tour through our cruise line, this was a mistake, we should have booked directly. While it was very rainy and we got soaked the guides really tried their hardest to make the best of it. Our guide found animals for us to see and while we didn’t get to snorkel, the BBQ food was terrific. The conditions were not ideal and the cruise line should have canceled the whole thing, but we couldn’t be upset with the tour guides themselves. I would not recommend doing this on a rainy day Read more Written 14 March 2024

Hluhluwe – iMfolozi Game Reserve provides an exceptional wildlife viewing experience to the visitors. This park is a habitat for the Big Five, especially the rhino species. The thick foliage of this reserve makes the spotting of the wildlife a little difficult. Wild dogs are often seen wandering around the reserve.

Sightings of the Big Five, white and black rhinos, buffalos, big cats, and elephants can be spotted. Other common species found are giraffes and zebras roaming throughout the park.

Additional hluhluwe umfolozi park information.

  • Situated, 225km north of Durban, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
  • Size, spanning an area of 960 square kilometers, 96000 hectares.
  • Name , Hluhluwe is a Zulu word for thorny rope plant.
  • Conservation , thanks to its innovative efforts in 2008 had the largest population of White Rhinos in the World.
  • Only state-run Big 5 Park within KwaZulu Natal.
  • Hunting this park has been subjected to incredible hunting first by the Zulus during the 1800s and then by White hunters during the 1840s.
  • By 1890 fewer than 100 White Rhinos had survived the last remaining on Earth.
  • In 1989 the corridor area was incorporated into the park thus contributing to a fully functioning park.

The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park was opened on the 30th of April 1895, however, the Hluhluwe and the Umfolozi were separate parks at that stage divided by the Black Umfolozi River . The corridor road was established in between the two parks and persons wanting to visit both parks had to drive all the way around to access a different gate.

This no longer exists and today clients may enjoy both parks from either side. The Hluhluwe Game Reserve is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa.

The Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park is also rich in history and can firmly state that their actions in in-game capture and wildlife translocations saved both the Black and White Rhinos from near extinction in the '60s.

The Umfolozi site was originally used as King Shaka's private hunting grounds. Should this be your first visit to the Park then be assured that this 96000-hectare reserve makes for some pretty amazing Day Safaris.

The park is a Big 5 Reserve these animals include both White and Black Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, and Elephant. Other interesting wildlife includes the likes of Cheetahs and Wild Dogs.

What is the oldest game reserve in Africa?

The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, formerly known as the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa. This 96000-hectare park is home to the African Big 5, Cheetah, and Wild Dogs to only mention the larger animals one may encounter while in the park.

The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is also world-renowned for its safe the Rhino campaign in the '60s when less than 100 Rhino roamed the planet.

Can you do a self-drive safari into the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park?

Yes, absolutely. The park is well suited for self-drive safaris. It is advisable that you purchase a Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park Map at the reception as the park is quite large.

Do you need a 4x4 to visit the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park?

No, one may enjoy the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park in a normal sedan. Certain parts of the park are however not suited to sedans, these may include areas that are gravel and have not recently been graded.

Would you recommend visiting the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park?

Absolutely yes, the park is truly an amazing and incredible Park. No one park is identical and the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park has so much to offer from its magical wildlife to amazing and incredible hilly topography in the North to the grasslands in the South.

What are the best Hluhluwe Umfolozi Day Safari Options?

The best option would first of all be Time, and how much of it you have. Should you like to enjoy the best that the park has to offer then we should suggest a Full Day Safari as this would offer you not only more time but also a larger area in which to explore and discover as many wildlife species as possible.

Do you need a 4x4 for a Self-Drive Hluhluwe Safari?

No, however, the height elevation will definitely help with not only varying areas within the park but also a better elevation for game viewing.

What animals might I see on a Hluhluwe Umfolozi Safari?

Unfortunately, this is an incredibly difficult question to answer, however, we have been fortunate enough on occasion to witness the Big 5 within 4 hours of entering the park. This is by no means the norm however the more time within any park the better.

The park is rich in wildlife, at the last count, 120 lions were recorded. Other species of wildlife include White Rhino, Black Rhino, Buffalo, Leopard, Elephant, Cheetah, Hyena, Wild Dogs, Nyala, Waterbuck, Hippo, Nile Crocodiles, Impala, Warthogs, Vervet Monkeys, Duiker, Zebra, Giraffe, Jackal, Blue Wildebeest to name but just a few of the possible sightings that you too could enjoy.

Are there Cheetahs in the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park?

Yes, this magnificent animal may be seen in either side of the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park. We suggest that for the best opportunity of witnessing Cheetahs explore the Sontuli area (Imfolozi Park).

The mist rises over the ridges of Hluhluwe–Imfolozi’s escarpments to reveal a verdant land of winding river channels and rolling grasslands. Welcome to Zulu country! Here, galumphing African elephants tread a riparian pathway, crashes of white and black rhinos alike (this is one of the most famous rhino conservation areas on the planet) bask in the sun, and Cape buffaloes face down lions and leopards, making it the only park in the KwaZulu Natal to house the Big 5.

All the while, the sinewy limbs of Lebombo wattle trees spike the canopies, quiver-leaf bushes whisper in the breeze and Maputaland ordeal blooms rustle over the sand forests. Nature lovers flock to this corner of South Africa from far and wide for the unique biodiversity that sees a varied set of mammals, retiles and amphibians coexisting with over 300 species of birds. To see it all, Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park tour guides can now offer a whole host of lodges within the boundaries of the area, ranging from camp sites to luxury lodges built in the likeness of the rustic huts of the region’s onetime rulers, the mighty Zulu. Boat tours are also particularly popular, especially on the waters around the breathtaking Hluhluwe dam.

Wildlife Wonderland: Best Game Reserves in South Africa

Looking for the Top South Africa Game Reserves? You have come to the right place. Read on.

Traveling to Africa to see the epic wildlife is a bucket-list item for a lot of people. South Africa is the perfect destination.

The continent’s southernmost country can show you the best of Africa. From the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town to the wilds of the far northern region of Kruger National Park, it doesn’t get any better.

You’ll find a wide variety of spectacular South Africa game reserves. Each one offers you a unique and amazing wildlife experience. It can be tough to choose just one of them!

Here you’ll get an overview of South Africa’s best game reserves. Find out what animals you might catch a glimpse of and what each park offers.

Hopefully, you have time to take in more than one. Read on, and see what you think!

Top South Africa Game Reserves

South Africa is home to some of the most spectacular game reserves. They offer incredible wildlife experiences and a variety of accommodations. All are Big 5 reserves.

In this section, we’ll explore a few of the best game reserves that you should consider visiting.

Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most famous game reserves. It’s located in northeastern South Africa, and spans an area of about 19,485 km² (7,523 miles²).

The size of the park allows for a variety of landscapes and experiences. The topography, as well as the available amenities, varies quite a lot as you travel from south to north.

You’ll find the south to be more diverse and hilly. Open savannah grasslands cover the central region, with rugged mopane woodlands in the north.

Wildlife concentration varies accordingly. The entire park offers opportunities for unbelievable sightings. However, the southern areas of the park tend to have higher concentrations of animals.

But the number of people is more concentrated here too. The number of shops, accommodations, and amenities follows suit. People and conveniences become fewer the farther north you travel.

Kruger Park has a perfect spot for you, whatever sort of experience you’re looking for. You’ll find camps and rest camps that offer a range of accommodations, including campsites, chalets, and luxury lodges .

The southern camps generally have the more developed infrastructure. More restaurants, shops, and facilities for visitors. If you spend your time in the northern reaches, you’ll see more of wild Africa, and less of the people who come to see them. This is where I like to hang out.

If you’ll be in the northeast part of South Africa, Kruger is definitely a game reserve to consider. This is especially true if it’s your first time to Africa, and dream of self-drive safaris.

YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE THIS: The Perfect Itinerary for 5 days in Cape Town

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Adjacent to Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands Game Reserve is thought by some to be the best game reserve in South Africa.

Sabi Sands is known for its exclusivity and incredible wildlife sightings. This reserve stands out as one of the most famous private game reserves in the country.

It’s also known as one of the best areas to spot the elusive African leopard.

Sabi Sands shares an unfenced border with Kruger, allowing animals to roam freely between the two areas. It offers a more exclusive experience than Kruger, with limited visitors and no self-drive safaris.

The northern area of Sabi Sands is where you’ll find the more budget friendly accommodations. The southern section leans more towards luxury, perfect if you’re after a more pampered getaway.

Some lodges even offer spa services, and may have curio shops as well. A few even sell local crafts – lovely for gifts and souvenirs of your trip.

Wherever you stay in this South Africa game reserve, you’ll be in for great wildlife sightings.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Another remarkable reserve worth exploring is Madikwe Game Reserve. It’s the fifth largest in South Africa at 750 km² (290 m²) and offers exceptional wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

Located near the border of Botswana, Madikwe is also known for its efforts in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. Madikwe is a Big 5 game reserve, but is especially famous for its population of critically endangered wild dogs.

This makes it an excellent choice for those wanting a unique wildlife experience. No self-drive safaris, though.

Madikwe has a varied selection of accommodations. You have your choice from luxury lodges to comfortable bush camps, and lots in between. You can find spa and wellness treatments here too.

A variety of game drives and wildlife viewing options are available through your accommodations, as well.

An added bonus of Madikwe is that it’s considered completely malaria-free.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve is located on the eastern side of South Africa. It’s less than 2 hours drive north of the town of Durban, and covers about 960 km² ( 370 miles²).

HiP, as it’s known, is the oldest official nature reserve in Africa. Aside from its Big 5 population and rich wildlife sightings, people love it for its conservation efforts.

It’s thanks to these efforts that HiP has one of the largest white rhino populations on the planet. Endangered black rhinos also roam the park, and are always a thrill to see on a self-drive safari.

Accommodations in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi range from luxury lodges to camping. You can choose from self-catering chalets and campsites, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Many of these accommodations offer amenities like restaurants and swimming pools. You can join guided game drives, or wander out on the walking trails. You’ll get to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the reserve. I can never get enough of these walking trails.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi is less than an hour from the fun coastal town of St. Lucia . It makes a great day trip if you’d prefer to stay in town.

TOUR SUGGESTION: Spend a full day on a safari in the magical Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park on this spectacular tour from Durban.

Shamwari Game Reserve

Shamwari is an award-winning private reserve that focuses on conservation and responsible tourism. It’s a smaller park at 250 km² (97 miles²), and an easy hour’s drive northeast of Port Elizabeth,

As well as the Big 5, Shamwari is home to rare species like the black rhino and the elusive cape leopard. This is another great chance for you to have an unforgettable wildlife experience.

If your African safari dreams include world-class luxury accommodations, then Shamwari should be on your shortlist. Several options are available, and you can’t go wrong with any of them.

You can even get a sneak preview of what natural wonders Shamwari has to offer. It has been the subject of a few film series.

Shamwari Untamed is a reality series that was presented by Netflix back in 2018. Animal Planet also filmed a series here called Shamwari: A Wild Life. If you can track these down, have a look!

Additional Game Reserve Destinations

In addition to the well-known South Africa game reserves, there are several other exciting destinations worth exploring while you’re here. These are lesser known options, and tend to be smaller in area as well.

Manyeleti Game Reserve

At the Manyeleti Game Reserve, you’ll find a more exclusive and personal safari experience. Like Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Manyeleti borders Kruger National Park, sitting on 200 km² (77 miles²).

It offers exceptional wildlife sightings, including the Big 5. This small reserve, with only 3 lodges on site, is something of a hidden gem. One that will soon feel like your dream home.

Away from the crowds of larger parks and reserves, you can enjoy peaceful game drives. You’ll have the chance to spot leopards, cheetahs, and other animals, and have them all to yourselves.

With no fence between Manyeleti and Kruger, you’ll have access to the same wildlife, in a more private setting.

Kariega Game Reserve

A private, family owned Big-5 reserve, Kariega is found along South Africa’s famous Garden Route. It sits amid a landscape of rolling hills, dense bushes, and river valleys.

Here you have the choice of 5 luxury lodges, including the Homestead, a private 7-bedroom chalet. The Homestead is ideal if you’re traveling with a group.

The beaches of Kenton-on-Sea are just 15 minutes away from the 100 km² (37 mile²) reserve. Kariega lets you enjoy the best of both worlds – ideal if you’re having trouble deciding between a safari and a beach vacation.

You can even make it a part of a Garden Route excursion. And the reserve is considered malaria-free!

Aquila Game Reserve

The Aquila Reserve is just 2 hours from Cape Town, the Mother City. Aquila is about the same size as Kariega, and makes a great addition to a visit to the wine region of Franschhoek.

If you’re staying in Cape Town, you can still see Africa’s epic wildlife while you’re in the area. Aquila is perfect for a day trip.

But if you prefer a more immersive experience, Aquila is still a great choice. Stay at the premier lodge, or at one of the luxury cottages built around the resort.

The Tranquila Spa on the property is almost as big a draw as the game drives. But the wildlife will be the most memorable part of your visit.

Choose between half-day or full-day safaris .

~ This is a really great round-trip tour with a Game Drive from Capetown to Aquila.

Exploring South Africa’s Wildlife

South Africa is home to an abundance of iconic wildlife. It’s a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world.

The many game reserves scattered across the country offer plenty of opportunities to discover the animals. Here’s a brief glimpse of what’s in store for you in the incredible African wilderness.

The Big Five

One of the main attractions of a South African safari is the chance to spot the famous “Big 5”. These are lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, and elephants.

These spectacular animals are among the most sought-after species in African wildlife.

Lions are often found in prides and are known for their powerful presence and deafening roars. As the king of the animal kingdom, they inspire both respect and awe.

Leopards are elusive and stealthy predators, and they’re a challenge to spot. Catching a glimpse of one is a breathtaking experience.

If you’re really lucky, you’ll get to see a display of their stunning strength as they pull a prey animal into a tree.

Rhinos can be found in two varieties in South Africa – the white rhino and the critically endangered black rhino. These massive herbivores have an incredible prehistoric appearance. It’s fascinating to watch them graze and interact with each other.

Buffalo herds are commonly found roaming the grasslands and forests. These huge, strong, and highly sociable animals are an important part of the African ecosystem.

Last but not least, the gentle giants of the land, elephants are highly intelligent and incredibly social creatures. They’ll provide you with unforgettable moments if you’re lucky enough to observe them up close.

South Africa’s wildlife doesn’t end there. You might also come across cheetahs , rare African wild dogs , and even the elusive white lions on your journey. Even the birdlife in South Africa is legendary.

Safari Experiences and Activities

There are a few different ways to experience the wonders of South Africa game reserves. Try to participate in as many of these as you can!

Game Drives

Guided game drives through South Africa’s beautiful landscapes let you cover the most ground. Your guides are expert game spotters with a wealth of knowledge about the animals.

Don’t forget to bring your camera. These game drives provide plenty of opportunities to capture stunning photos of your adventures.

Walking Safaris

Get closer to your surroundings by participating in walking safaris. Here, expert guides will lead you through the African wilderness, teaching you about local plants, animals, and ecosystems.

With your feet on the ground, you’ll have a better chance of spotting smaller creatures. It’s a great chance to feel truly connected to the environment.

River Cruises and Canoeing

For a serene and relaxing experience, consider taking a river cruise along South Africa’s waterways. You’ll witness incredible birdlife, crocodiles, and hippos while soaking in the natural beauty of your surroundings.

If you prefer a more active approach, some reserves also offer canoeing and kayaking options. These allow you to gently paddle yourself through the water. With or without a guide depends on where you are. Kariega is a great spot to go canoeing.

Of course, remember to always follow the safety guidelines provided by your guides while enjoying these activities. This will not only ensure your safety, but also protect the wildlife and their habitats.

Embrace as many of these wonderful safari experiences in South Africa as you have time for.

In Conclusion: South Africa Game Reserves

South Africa is a treasure trove of beautiful game reserves. They lure and captivate the hearts of wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world.

Each reserve offers a unique and unforgettable experience, from the iconic Kruger National Park to the remarkable Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve.
