What our travelers say about their Adventure Tours

More types of tours, adventure travel faq.

Small groups experiencing big things is our take on adventure travel. Each of our Adventure Tours features a group size of 10–22 travelers, the ideal size for making connections with each other, your Tour Director, local guides, and the communities you’ll visit.

Discovering ancient ruins in the Andes, tasting local specialties during market visits, riding a rickshaw through the bustling cities of Asia , and walking along scenic coastlines of Europe are just a few of the types of experiences you may have on these active tours, These trips are a great fit for travelers of all ages who are looking to get out and explore the world on active vacations.

We offer Adventure Tours to Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, North America, and the South Pacific. Our active trips offering is always growing, so check back often to see what new destinations are added!

The short answer: Expect to cross bucket list adventures off your list!

The longer one: Another way to think about our small group adventure trips is as more active vacations. You can expect to see a mix of historic cities and smaller towns while traveling, and going off the beaten path. These are more active tours, which means you’ll be on your feet each day, sometimes for several hours at a time. You can find detailed information about the pace and included activities for these active vacations on each trip’s itinerary page.

Our Adventure Tours feature hands-on, experiential activities in off-the-beaten-path locations with small groups of 22 travelers, maximum. Like all of our trips, our Adventure tour packages include accommodations, sightseeing tours with local guides, an expert Tour Director, on-tour transportation, breakfast daily, and select lunches and dinners. We take care of all the details of your itinerary, so you can make the most of your time on our active vacations.

Utah Parks Circuit Tour

Utah Parks Circuit

I had a great time doing the Utah Parks Circuit. Despite the bad weather we could see a lot. My highlights were the Narrows in Zion and Bryce Canyon. More time in Bryce Canyon would have been nice. Campgrounds were remote but all had nice restrooms with showers.

Yellowstone / Grand Teton 4 Day / 3 Night Wildlife Adventure

The tour is very good. We saw a lot of animals and went to a lot of places in the park that people don’t go to and should. But we had a lot of problems communicating with the tour operators to get information about our tour. I would suggest that you check out the other tour companies to see what they offer.

Majestic Alaska (10 Days) Tour

Majestic Alaska (10 Days)

In general things went very well. However, At the Denali location there was a shortage of staff which prevented full service at the Park, Ie. not all dinning venues were normal and our room service such as daily service was missing. We were told, staff shortage due to Canadian employees may have left due to concern of border being closed into Canada. Hotel dysfunction on a limited basis due to that concern. On our last day at the Anchorage Hilton room service was missing also. Not sure why. Most other activities were well supplied/performed. We were pleased.with our Tour Director Tyler, Bus Driver Les and Health coordinator Carol., Some other venues were a bit restricted due to COVID-19 concerns which appear to be out of control of Tourradar. We loved Valdez,, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Kanai Fjords National Park, as well as the Athabascan Village and flat boat ride and other amenities such as the Husky Dog Farm. Overall pleased, except as noted above. The weather cooperated 100%.

Las Vegas, Sedona & Monument Valley – 5 days Tour

Las Vegas, Sedona & Monument Valley – 5 days

We really enjoyed this tour. The days on the bus are long as the distances travelled are vast but the places we saw made it all worth it. The coach was very comfortable, the tour was well organised and our guide Lorenzo & bus driver, Ozzie, kept us informed (about where we were going, an history of the places and what to expect next) and entertained throughout. The hotel accommodation was perfect for our needs. Definitely a tour worth doing. Family of four (including 2 teens)

Discover American Canyonlands National Geographic Journeys Tour

Discover American Canyonlands National Geographic Journeys

Like many other businesses, they are having some staffing issues. This business was particularly affected by the pandemic as nobody traveled for a year and they had to lay off some people. We had some trouble getting through to them on occasion, but when the time came, they knocked it out of the park. It was a great trip from the beginning to the end. Their Nat Geo tours are a little bit higher end and, in my opinion, worth the money. We had enough time at multiple different locations to go on a very lengthy hikes. That was very nice because sometimes tours over program and you can only get as much accomplished as the slowest person on the tour. The portions of the tour that we did as a group were perfect. Coupled with the adequate time that we had to do our own thing, it made for a wonderful trip. We saw Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Antelope Canyon, the Grand Canyon and did some really cool smaller stops along the way. In each of the parks, we had six or seven hours to accomplish some major hikes. Nice hotels, great recommendations for dinners, wonderful people in our group and our tour guide (Megan) was fantastic. We went out to dinner with the group several nights and it was very pleasant. Some nights we did our own thing. Small groups no larger than 15. We had 13 people total. We brought our 13 and 15-year-old boys and they had a great time as well. I highly recommend.

Western National Parks 7 Day Explorer Lodging Tour

Western National Parks 7 Day Explorer Lodging

I had a wonderful time. I was a little disappointed in the accommodations at the Ellis Island hotel. Our deposit had not been taken care of as well as the resort fee. Our guide took care of the resort fee with his Bindlestiff Credit card but the hotel would no let him cover the deposit. The next night at the 395 travel lodge in Bishop our travel companions had an ant infestation in there room. Our SanFrancisco tour did not live up to the the booking guide. The was not stop at Fisherman’s Wharf.

Niagara Falls, Washington DC, Philadelphia & Amish Country 4D/3N (from New York)

A hectic and fast paced trip, starting with early mornings. Loved Niagara Falls and being able to go to the Canadian side for one night (remember to apply for a Canadian Esta and bring your passport). Pennsylvania and Amish country side was a treat. Wish we had more time there. Love hearing about American history. Then Washington DC- amazing city. We disembarked after touring DC monuments and aeronautical museum and spent two more days in DC. Wharf, eateries, sights and monuments within reach.

Best time to visit united states.

Being such a large country, the weather in the US is different depending on which area you are in. Summer (June to August) is the peak travel season due to school holidays, but it can be uncomfortably hot in the desert areas and the south.

The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit, but the weather is still highly variable and these may be the wettest times in some parts of the country (such as the Pacific Northwest ). Winter can be cold in the northern states, but quiet in other areas, which can make it a pleasant time to visit.

Culture and customs

With immigration playing a major part in the development of America, today the country is made up of many different cultures. It’s no wonder modern America is rich with a variety of cultural traditions, cuisines, religions and festivals. Because of this, a large diversity of holidays are celebrated in America. Annual holidays like  Independence Day  and Thanksgiving are usually celebrated by all regardless of religion or political persuasion, and give people a chance to reconnect with family and friends around the dinner table or grill.

From sports to soul music, popular culture to philosophy, and fine art to folk art, the tastes and desires of Americans vary around the country. A love of sport unifies the nation - it doesn’t matter if you live in a city loft or out in the country, sports like ice hockey, basketball, baseball and football all attract a strong following.

Many Native Americans live on reservations and fight to retain their traditions and preserve their heritage, although when visiting reservations don’t be surprised to see Native Americans wearing modern clothing. With much of the language and many of the customs lost over the years, Native Americans strive to live a life of deep spirituality and in connection with the earth, as their ancestors did for centuries.

Check out our range of  experiences in the United States that amplify BIPOC cultures .

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring cheap eats or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

With a variety of international influences, try Creole cuisine in New Orleans, traditional Jewish fare like bagels and pastrami sandwiches in New York, and barbecue in Texas. America’s got everything, from burger joints to taco shacks, organic cafes to refined Michelin-starred restaurants.

Geography and environment

From the lush everglades of Florida, through the red-hot deserts of Nevada and on to the urban jungles of New York and Philadelphia, the United States has many different environments and ecosystems within its boundaries. Sharing borders with Canada in the north and Mexico in the south, the United States has deserts, glaciers, freshwater lakes, rapid-filled rivers, mountain ranges, sprawling plains, forested national parks , beaches and bays.

The major national parks of America – Yellowstone, Zion, Yosemite, Bryce Canyon, Denali and Joshua Tree offer a glimpse into what much of America looked like before development. Lush vegetation, majestic mountains and sparkling lakes give deer, moose, bears, bison and many other species of wildlife a fertile home to live in.

When traveling, you’re likely to see modern cities filled with traffic, skyscrapers and high-density housing, as well as sleepy towns, trailer parks and Native American reservations. A complex network of highways connect the major cities, making overland travel a popular choice with visitors and locals alike. The great American road trip is still alive and well.

History and government

As one of the world’s most influential nations, major moments and events in American history ripple throughout the rest of the world. The American people are known for their resilience and irrepressible nature, and it is this spirit that allows them to continue to contribute to the world economically, scientifically and creatively.

In recent history, America has enjoyed the historic highs of the moon landings and the devastating lows of Hurricane Katrina. The world has seen American companies like Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Starbucks change the face of the world. And people like Steven Spielberg, Lance Armstrong, Maya Angelou and Sidney Poitier create masterpieces, break records and win countless awards.

Top 10 must-see cities in the US

1. new york.

You can be anyone you want to be in NYC. Indulge your artistic side at MoMA, mingle with the Gordon Geckos on Wall Street, cheer like a pro at a Yankees game or kick back at a bar with a Manhattan and a new pair of Jimmy Choos.

2. San Francisco

San Francisco is made of sunshine, seafood and a whole lot of hills. This is the place to embrace your inner (or outer) bohemian. But it's not all 'flowers in your hair' and free thinking, be sure to take a ferry to Alcatraz and scoff down a clam chowder at Fisherman's Wharf.

3. New Orleans

The Caribbean meets France and Africa in New Orleans. Music is everywhere, and so are the friendly faces. The city comes to life after dark so have an afternoon nap, get some comfortable shoes on and get ready to bar hop the night away.

4. Las Vegas

Hello Lady Luck! Days somehow disappear in the hedonistic blitz of color, light, showgirls, casinos and offers too good to refuse. Try to escape the endless buffets to catch a real Las Vegas show; there's everything from death-defying acrobats to Elvis on offer.

The financial and political powerhouse of Chicago has been the home of two of the most influential people in the world - President Obama and Oprah. Famed for its distinctive architecture, booming performing arts scene and sports-mad locals, the 'Windy City' shouldn't be missed.

The air is warmer, the clothes smaller and the colors are somehow brighter in Miami. Jewish, Latin and Caribbean cultures blend to make a heady mix of great food, even better music and a nightlife filled with the spirit of fiesta. Hang out on perfect beaches, spot classic cars and gaze at the beautiful people as they strut their stuff.

7. Los Angeles

Search beyond the stardust of Hollywood and the excessive price tags of Rodeo Drive, to find the true essence of Los Angeles. Home to a melting pot of cultures, uber-cool restaurants, a hip art scene and the eclectic vibe of Venice Beach, LA is so hot right now!

The birthplace of grunge music and iconic super-companies like Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks, Seattle offers so much more than great coffee. Markets packed with fresh produce, a harbor perfect for boating, vibrant public art and a thriving live music scene combine to make Seattle a must-see city.

History comes alive in the heritage-filled streets of Memphis. Whether it's at Elvis Presley's Graceland, the lively blues clubs and restaurants of Beale Street or the moving Civil Rights Movement Museum, it could be said that the soul of America lives in Memphis.

One of America's oldest cities, Boston is evolving. Working class neighborhoods are being gentrified, the industry is giving way to tech start-ups and modern architectural treasures sit alongside brown-stone buildings. Despite the change, get chatting to locals about the Red Sox and you'll soon find you're definitely in Boston.

It’s no wonder many people choose to do their clothes shopping in the United States. With iconic department stores offering a wide range of labels, and vintage/charity stores stocking American fashion classics like distressed denim jeans and leather cowboy boots, shopping in America is fun. Known for having great sales and even better customer service, it’s well worth leaving room in your backpack for a few extras. Please note that unlike in many other countries, tax isn’t included in the ticketed price.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Festivals and events

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the Carnival season in New Orleans. Witness a chaotic collision of lively music, colorful costumes, masquerade masks, soul food and joyful 'krewes' at the parades, parties and masquerade balls in late February every year.

Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is an annual festival celebrated on 5 May to mark the day when an army of 4,000 Mexican soldiers defeated the French Empire in the Battle of Puebla in  Mexico .

Do I need a visa to travel to United States?

It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.

If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorization before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).

If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.

People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell phone while in the US?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

What will it cost for a…?

Prices can vary between states, but on average, here's what you can expect to pay for a:

  • Cup of coffee = USD $2-5.00 for a regular cup, up to $8.00 for a specialty coffee
  • Hotdog from street cart = USD $4.00
  • Dinner at a mid-range restaurant = USD $20-40 per person
  • NYC one-way subway ticket = USD $3.00

Can I drink the water in the US?

Drinking water from taps in the US is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the US?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

What kind of transport will I use in the United States?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in the US, you may find yourself traveling by:

Be amazed by enormous glaciers and stunning, icy landscapes while traveling on a ferry in Alaska.

Use pedal power to see the best of Venice Beach and Santa Monica. Cycling is a great way to see the sights and be active at the same time.

Take in the sights while enjoying a ride on one of San Francisco’s icons – the streetcar.

What sort of accommodation will I stay in while traveling in the United States?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in the US you may find yourself staying in a:

Spend a night sleeping in a hogan – a traditional Navajo structure made of logs, mud and stone and built with an open roof to view the sparkling night sky.

Reconnect with nature and enjoy staying in quaint log cabins throughout the country's beautiful national parks. Fall asleep to the rustling of trees and wake up to the sounds of birds.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

United States Tours

Man leading group on horseback in Arizona, USA

Every day is Independence Day

Big and flashy, subtle and sophisticated, or homespun and disarmingly familiar, the United States has it all... a country where in the west so admired Celebrity and Pop Culture exists side by side with untouched wilderness. With so many cities and natural wonders spread across 8 million square kilometres of freedom, it's no surprise that the United States are the birthplace of the modern road trip. Few places on Earth can claim the variety, scope and scale of the United States, and its melting pot of influences from around the world has made for a culture rife with – and proud of – its contradictions. On a trip through the United States you should not miss a walk through Alaska's Denali National Park, a trip to the Kenai Peninsula or a nighttime stroll through New York. The charm of this country lies in adventure and exploration, in the enjoyment of American cuisine and in contact with the people, so that one takes home a lot of stories and a lot of unforgettable memories.

These RI chefs have tasted the world. How you can join them on a culinary tour.

tour in adventure

Food and travel are an intoxicating combination. Imagine how tempting trips planned with local food stars could be on destinations ranging from South Korea to Portugal.

Club Adventures, AAA’s small-group adventure tour operator, has teamed up with Providence and Rhode Island chefs, restaurateurs, and beverage experts to offer curated food tours starting in August and running into next year. The concept is to see the world through a local lens with a guide who knows all the best places to eat and drink.

Of the 13 food and drink trips, some are close to home including New York City and Austin, Texas. Others are to islands including the Azores and Sicily. Mexico, Spain and Germany during Oktoberfest are other destinations. One trip offers a gluten-free and vegan adventure in Italy.

The trips will have an average size of 14 travelers. They range in time from 4 days to 10 days with prices from $1,999 to $7,979.

Bethany Hodge's 15 years in the travel industry have included designing and operating culturally immersive small group trips. Now, as head of product for Club Adventures, she is launching the new tours.

But it was a conversation with Bethany Caliaro, owner/manager of both Oberlin and Gift Horse in Providence , that planted the seed for the program. Hodge was headed to Mexico with her husband Brian and Caliaro had just returned from a trip there. She shared her list of restaurants, bars and specific dishes for the couple to try.

"I’ve been watching the food and hospitality industry in Rhode Island become a national leader in innovation, community, diversity and sustainability – all values that I use when designing Club Adventures tours," she said.

"Every one of her suggestions elevated our travel experience, and I realized that the insight and guidance of a food professional could really turn a fun trip into a memorable adventure," said Hodge.

With consumer interest in culinary travel on the rise, Hodge knew tours that showcased these mutual values could be a hit. She first pitched the idea to Caliaro and Jen Davis, who manages the beverage program at The Eddy and Durk's  Bar-B-Q , both in Providence. They connected Hodge to more of the local culinary community.

"Every single establishment that I spoke with was in," said Hodge.

Each chef/bartender/business owner has been involved in curating the itinerary, leading to an exclusive experience that can’t be found anywhere else in the market.

"While chef-led tours are certainly being done in the travel space, I believe this is a first to ever showcase a city’s leaders in the culinary space all at once as a unified portfolio," Hodge said.

"It really speaks to the community and creativity of Providence," she said.

She hopes to create even more trips for 2025 with more leaders in the Rhode Island hospitality scene, she said.

The trips and guides

The cultural exploration and food adventures will be led by an impressive group including James Beard nominated chef Ben Sukle of Oberlin and Gift Horse. He will lead a September tour to Northern Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.

“I am incredibly excited to join everyone and experience Trieste and its surrounding cities and environs," said Sukle. "All of the nuances of the lifestyles and culture there are behind how I cook and why I love to cook."

Caliaro will lead a fish-to-fork dining adventure in Sicily. Led by Oberlin chef Chris Pfail, the art of making kimchi is on the menu for a South Korea adventure.

Jen Davis leads two trips, one to Austin, Texas, to explore the barbecue and distillery scene and one to New York City to enjoy the city's cocktail scene.

Spain will be part of a Basque Adventure led by The Eddy's Luke Mersfelder and Britt Simons.

Mexico City and Oaxaca will be explored in a trip led by Joaquin Meza of Dolores . Germany’s Oktoberfest will be celebrated with Brendan Kennedy of Proclamation Ale in Warwick.

Robin Dionne & BJ Mansuetti who operate the RI VegFest and GFree Fests will lead the Gluten-Free and Vegan tour of Italy.

Pizza Marvin's Robert Andreozzi is another James Beard nominated chef and he will be on the Portugal & Galicia Food Adventure.

Only one guide is from outside the Rhode Island culinary restaurant world but she is no stranger to locals. Maria Lawton is the host and guide of "Maria's Portuguese Table" which is presented by WSBE Rhode Island PBS. She will lead an Azores Food Adventure and Portugal Wine & Food Adventure.

Wrexham.com for people living in or visiting the Wrexham area

A foodie adventure which promises to tantalise taste buds and uncover hidden culinary gems in Wrexham will launch this summer.

The multi-award winning ‘Walking Food Tours UK’ aims to highlight small and local eateries.

Founder Gareth Boyd, originally from Cardiff and ‘very proud of his Welsh heritage’, will be launching the walking food tour in Wrexham in July.

“I am so excited to launch the ‘ Croeso to Wrexham Food & Drink Tour this summer,” said Gareth.

“Everyone now knows about Wrexham AFC and its famous Hollywood owners, and I’m keen to showcase the amazing local food and drink scene which is evolving all the time.

“Indeed, while the spotlight often shines on Wrexham FC and its high-profile owners, there’s a rich tapestry of flavours waiting to be explored beyond the football pitch.

“The Croeso to Wrexham Food and Drink Tour offers an immersive experience, whisking guests away to ‘off the beaten track’ independent venues, where culinary artisans weave together tradition and innovation.

“But it’s not just about the food – although, rest assured, there will be plenty to savour.

“As participants indulge in a smorgasbord of local delights, they’ll also be treated to a journey through Wrexham’s storied history and heritage.

“For foodies and enthusiasts of all stripes, this tour is a dream come true. Whether you’re a seasoned epicurean or simply someone who appreciates good food and drink, The Croeso to Wrexham Food & Drink Tour promises an unforgettable experience.

“And with online bookings now available, securing your spot at the table has never been easier.

What Makes The BMW R1200GS An Ultimate Adventure Motorcycle

A dventure touring motorcycles take the best of sports bikes and dirt bikes and combine them into a single machine that can theoretically go anywhere. An adventure bike can easily transition from smooth asphalt highways to rocky dirt roads without breaking a sweat. This versatility has been very appealing to motorcycle riders. It shouldn't come as a surprise that they're popular among communities of riders that have always associated two-wheeled vehicles with their freedom.

There are a lot of different adventure bike options out there for those who are interested, but few have managed to match the long-standing popularity of the BMW R1200GS. The company has a sterling reputation for making some of the best quality bikes on the market, ever since BMW released its first motorcycle over 100 years ago . This certainly isn't one of the fastest BMW motorcycles ever built , but the R1200GS combines the manufacturer's famous engineering with an all-terrain design that has proven it stands the test of time.

Those who aren't familiar with it might be wondering what it is about the R1200GS that has made it so compelling to adventure motorcycle lovers for so long. To understand that, you have to learn a little bit about the bike itself. Here's a quick breakdown of its specs and a look at the machine that many consider to be the ultimate adventure motorcycle.

Models And Specs

There have been several iterations of the BMW GS motorcycles over the years, but there have only been two major R1200GS models. There was the original R1200GS, which debuted in 2004 and ran until 2012. This bike had a 1200cc boxer motor that phased out the previous R1150 series, the R1200C cruisers, and the K1200RS. It had a 73mm stroke, 1,170cc displacement, and got up to 98 horsepower at 7,000 RPM.

Then there was the larger R1200GS Adventure, which ran from 2005-2013. This had the same motor and chassis, but there were a few minor differences mostly related to the vehicle's size. The Adventure was about an inch taller, wider, and longer than the original, with an extra 0.8-inches in suspension travel and ground clearance. It also had an extra 18 pounds of carrying capacity. Models manufactured after 2008 also allowed riders to adjust the chassis and suspension while riding in order to adapt to road conditions on the fly.

Both of these models were later upgraded to liquid-cooled versions, which had a revamped boxer motor capable of hitting 125 horsepower. According to BMW Motorrad , these models also enjoyed "increased ride stability and ride precision thanks to the semi-active Dynamic ESA suspension." It also allowed the rider to choose between five different riding modes.

BMW continued to manufacture these bikes until 2019. It was at this point when BMW finally phased out the 1200 engine size in favor of the newer R1250GS, and is still being sold today.

Some of the BMW R1200GS's popularity is undoubtedly due to its appearances in the media. A TV series called "Long Way Round" came out in 2004, which featured actor Ewan McGregor and British television presenter Charley Boorman. These two celebrities took a pair of the R1150GS models and rode from London to New York by way of Europe, Asia, and Alaska. While they didn't ride the 1200cc itself, this almost certainly brought attention to the slightly more powerful model when it was released that same year.

In fact, McGregor and Boorman did a follow-up series in 2007 called "Long Way Down." This time, they took the actual R1200GS all the way from John o' Groats in the northern tip of Scotland all the way to Cape Agulhas in South Africa.

Watching a couple of well-known figures literally ride a motorcycle across the world is a pretty powerful selling point. Using these bikes to cross icy tundra and the brutal Saharan desert is bound to catch the attention of adventure lovers. It's more than likely that these two documentary series added significantly to the popularity of the BMW R1200GS.

They weren't the only celebrities to ride the bike either. "Rush" drummer Neil Peart also reportedly owned one of these adventure bikes, and featured it prominently in his autobiographical book "Roadshow Landscape with Drums: A Concert Tour By Motorcycle."

Reviews Of The R1200GS

To really understand why the BMW R1200GS is so beloved, it's best to take a look at some of the reviews from people who've spent some time riding one. Specs and fame are all well and good, but the best advice comes from someone whos spent some time in the saddle.

MCN reviewed the 2017-2018 version of the bike. They claimed that it was "one of the best adventure bikes around when launched." They praised the bike for its vast range of equipment options and claimed that it was reliable and incredibly well built, which made it an especially good option for people looking to buy a used bike.

Spencer Grey of Adventure Bike Rider did a piece on the R1200GS Adventure back in 2021: He rode it for a year and put 5,000 miles on it before writing his review. He claimed that he was hesitant to buy into the hype that had been built around the bike following the two "Long Way" documentaries, but ultimately stated he now understood what all the fuss was about. He liked the engine power and handling, and paid particular compliments to its off-road performance. His only complaint was that the stock seat was a bit heavy for serious off-road use.

YouTuber FTA Adventures took it even further: He did a long-term, 100,000-mile review of the 2015 R1200GS. His review went over the maintenance he performed, which was fairly standard for the lifespan of a bike with this many miles, and explained that he enjoyed the weight and handling of the bike. Several of the bike's features that he enjoyed were the cruise control, tire pressure monitor, and storage.

Why The R1200GS Is Beloved

The BMW R1200GS has been one of the most widely known adventure motorcycles on the market for over a decade — evidently for good reason. Sure, these bikes owe some of their popularity to their time in the limelight when McGregor and Boorman showcased their all-terrain capabilities as they crossed the globe, but their reputation is built on more than hype alone.

The specs are comparable to other popular dual-sport motorcycles like the KTM 1190 Adventure R, and reviewers across the board agree that its power, handling, comfort, build quality, and reliability are all top-tier. Some don't like its heavier weight, but there are just as many others who seem to prefer it.

The main issue that most people seem to have with the R1200GS has nothing to do with the bike's design, and everything to do with its price. BMW isn't exactly known for making budget machines, and the company's adventure bikes are no exception. There are very few BMW motorcycles that most people are likely to be able to afford . Then again, if you want the best, it shouldn't be too much of a surprise when you have to pay for it.
