The top 9 educational benefits of embarking on a school trip

This article was updated on 16 november 2018. you can read the updated version of 9 common benefits of international school travel here ..

From our experience students and teachers alike have a great time on our school group tours. Not only is it a fun and a hugely memorable time, there are constant opportunities for students to expand their own individual tacit knowledge crucial to higher level learning and problem solving skills. Students take what they’ve learnt back into everyday life and this impacts them for months and years to come!

We know though that there are times when teachers such as yourself sigh at the idea of organising an opportunity like this. The primary focus becomes more about policy, paperwork and the potential cost rather than the educational benefits. We understand that there is a lot of time and effort spent picking the right program, hosting parent nights, getting the sign-off from your school, managing all your students in the airport, and making sure the trip itself is going to run smoothly. Believe us when we tell you though, it is 100% worth all the time and effort that goes in to a school group tour.

EA aim to make all this organising a breeze for you however, for those moments, when you need to remember why taking students out of the classroom is such a good idea, here are our top 9 benefits for taking your students on a school trip:

1. Improves critical thinking skills

Global citizenship is fast becoming a hot topic and society is looking to schools to prepare its students for the future, particularly in regards to teaching problem solving, soft-skills and preparing students for millennial jobs that currently don’t exist or didn’t 10 years ago. This is a big ask for teachers with limited resources and time. With this in mind, teachers are looking for dynamic ways to introduce this into their curriculum however the tried and tested school trip continues to prove itself an effective way to incorporate the soft-skills such as strong communication, problem solving and critical thinking into teaching.

2. Experiential learning takes place

The classroom is an effective simulation of the real world however experiential learning argues that when learning is shifted into to a real-life situation it becomes more powerful in individuals. This supports the idea that in order to prepare students effectively for life we need to give them memorable experiences such as an international school trip.

3. Student's worldview is expanded

Embarking on educational tours, and submerging students into cultural experiences have been found to be invaluable for development and understanding. It is a perspective that cannot be taught, only experienced for oneself. As I’m sure you’re aware, it is hard to impart a passion for learning languages, understanding another culture or teaching why current world affairs is important to your students in the classroom alone. Travelling, and visiting a country different from one’s own can trigger ideas and solutions that may not stem from familiar comforts and habits.

4. Reinforces classroom material

Going to important historical landmarks and great museums gives students the opportunity to visualise, experience and discuss the topics they study in order to gain greater understanding. Not only will students recall the experience long after the trip, they may start to develop historical empathy, contextualising historical actions and understanding people of the past. This gives them a deeper understanding of people, places and situations which in turn can teach students critical thinking in their own life.

5. Greater bond between students and teachers

Getting to know your students more throughout the trip is a great way to build strong rapport with them. You will reap the benefits of this for the rest of the teaching year. Students who have a personal connection with their teachers are more motivated and connected to what they are being taught.

6. Learning local culture

I was amazed when I first heard that it was uncustomary in Japan to eat while walking along the street. I thought, surely it must not be closely adhered to. I needed to go there for myself to truly understand the local culture there and see how something as simple as don’t walk and eat played out in a place so unlike my own home. This is just one example of experiencing something first hand and how much it can enrich your perspective. Living in a different local culture even for a short time is a great way to enrich understanding. Not only that but it’s fun!

7. Students are encouraged to learn

Often educational tours use multimedia to visually grab attention and encourage students to partake in an enjoyable learning experience. However, in the classroom these exposed sensors may be limited. For example, students would retain more information from a NASA tour in Florida, where all sensors are exposed - over a powerpoint slide lesson in the classroom.

8. Helps those students who learn by doing

I’m sure you’ve all heard those age old qualms that not everyone was ‘made for school’ or ‘school just didn’t suit them’. Switching up the environment and bringing these types of students out of the classroom and into the real world can be a great way to spark their interest. Take advantage of the informal learning situation and ignite passion in those who learn by ‘doing’.

9. Lifelong memories are made

When in a new environment, the students will need to work as a team with other classmates outside of their normal group. Not only that, but they make lifelong memories among peers, which is no doubt a fun learning experience in itself.

All in all, we hope you can picture the exciting times to be had on your very own school group tour with your students. All the preparing is well worth the benefits gained during the trip and beyond. And don’t forget your own (mini) holiday in an amazing country along the way too…

10 air travel tips for effortless school trips.

Thursday, 10th August 2023

For many students, a school trip abroad will be their first time travelling without their parents and for some it will be their first-time travelling on a plane at all! To help you navigate from check in to landing with minimal teenage turbulence, our experienced former teachers-come-teacher tour leaders have shared 10 of their travel hacks for air travel with a school group.

1. Where to meet

Some schools, (particularly those with a longer distance to travel to the airport) will choose convene at the school itself and travel to the airport together. If you decide instead to meet at the airport, set a meeting time which leaves ample time to get the whole group checked-in and accommodate for any late arrivals.

Unsure of where to meet? Find out the check in area that your airline uses. These are normally labelled with large letters or numbers which makes them excellent muster points.

You will also need a meeting point in departures before boarding the flight. Choose a recognisable shopfront or marker and tell students that regardless of gate changes, delays or information they see on departure boards to meet at that point with plenty of time to walk to the gate.

2. Set your expectations in writing with a behaviour contract.

It is understandable that some students get over excited or over confident on an exciting excursion away from their parents. One way our teachers have encouraged good behaviour is to write a contract for both students and their parents to sign, agreeing to their expected levels of behaviour on the trip.

Having a copy of this contract with you on the trip can give you a chance to warn students of the promise they have made at the first sign of disruption. It prepares the parents of the expectations on them in the unlikely event their child breaks their agreement and are sent home and their parents have to collect them from the airport. Every group is different, what expectations do you have for your students?

3. Identification

Personalised hoodies, t-shirts or wristbands are a great way to keep track of your group and also to ensure that if for any reason a member of the group is separated, they have the school name and spelling to show an adult who can help them reconvene with the group. Try something as simple as a small printed business card including the group leader’s name and telephone number for the students to keep in the back of their phone case or in their wallet.

4. Ultimate packing list

Explain to your group what items they are allowed to pack into their hand luggage and what items they should place into their hold luggage. If you are a frequent flyer this information might seem obvious but first-time flyers could be caught out.

Consider the age of your students and how much packing and repacking they are likely to do on their trip. If appropriate why not tell each student to print their packing list and tape it to the inside of their case. At the end of their trip they can then check off items as they are repacked so they don’t leave anything behind. Younger children particularly benefit from this method.

5. Count to 10

Designate around 10 students to each teacher in your group. This teacher will be responsible for making sure these students are present and ready at each stage of the journey. Smaller groups are easier to get through security, board the plane and easier to count.

6. Efficient Security Checks

Explain the security procedure to your group before they approach the security entrance being sure to mention which items to take off before walking through the metal detectors or full body scanning machines.

Younger students can become overwhelmed if they are searched or if their bag is more closely examined, especially if they are nervous about the trip in general. Make them aware beforehand that this is a possibility and what will happen if their belongings or person does need to be searched.

In your groups of 10 students or fewer, make sure the teacher goes last so no student gets left behind.

Latest government guidance on hand luggage restrictions

7. Who should have passport control

Your decision of who should hold on to passports should depend on the age of your students and the level of responsibility they are used to. Generally speaking, we would recommend teachers hold on to all passports to minimise the risk however if you want to entrust the students with this responsibility ensure all of your students store their passport in a secure but easily accessible location. If it is stuck at the bottom of their rucksack they may cause delays through passport control.

Losing a passport can have consequences which dramatically disrupt your trip but if this does happen, call our emergency number and we will arrange an embassy appointment.

8. Navigate the airport

Point out some key locations in the departure lounge, for example the toilets and places to buy water and snacks. Have some spare cash for delays. Hours of delays can be a lot easier if everyone is fed and watered. Keep students informed of the likely delays so they can manage their own expectations of time.

9. In-flight food, drink and entertainment

Check on your itinerary to see if food will be provided on the flight and advise students if they need to buy a snack or drink in departures before boarding. It is a good idea to also check on your itinerary for when you will be having your next meal after arriving so you can prepare students if they will be going a while between meals.

The ultra-prepared teacher could bring paper activities to entertain students but in reality most students will being an electronic device to entertain them on board.

If you are travelling on a long-haul flight, you should receive a meal to sustain you but fussy eaters might be better to bring extra snacks just in case.

Small packets of sweets can really help students with the cabin pressure during take off and landing, plus it could distract nervous flyers.

10. Let the Cabin Crew take over

Remind students that once on board the cabin crew are in charge, not you. For security reasons all students should be sat in their assigned seat, this is a simple way to avoid some friendship dramas early on in the trip.

Do you have any nervous flyers in your group (that includes teachers)? Check in with them after any times of turbulence. Other than keeping an eye on your group, once on board you should be able to relax and enjoy your flight, trust that the cabin crew will alert you if the students need your help.

Class Trip to an Airport

person icon

This week we spoke to the team at the Education Centre at Manchester Airport to find out what they can offer school groups across a range of different key stages. We asked about the curriculum linked subjects and topics they can cater for, and how children get the opportunity to climb aboard a real aircraft, learn about the job roles, and about the various airport functions.

Hi Annette I would like to begin by asking you to give an overview of your company and your company ethos?

"Established in 2005, the Education Centre at Runway Visitor Park, which is a part of Manchester Airport, continues to educate and inspire. We are located right at the end of the busy runways Runway Visitor Park and we have breath-taking views across both runways. It is a very exciting environment for children of all ages, to enjoy & learn in! On average, 14,500 pupils take part in our Educational Tours each year.

airport learning

What type of curriculum subjects can be covered with a trip to Runway Visitor Centre and what are some of the most popular?

"We have linked our tours to areas of the National Curriculum actively, encouraging and involving children in their learning. Our tours easily link to Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Design Technology and History. We have some great resources on our website including lesson plans and worksheets to use following your tour with us!

It seems to be a very interactive and engaging trip, what sort of activities are available?

"The interactive nature of our tours is what truly brings them to life. Visitors taking part have the opportunity to board real aircraft, whilst learning about the different job roles that help ensure the airport runs smoothly. Many of our Tour Guides are ex airline industry professionals, which helps to bring our tours to life and give realistic interpretations of life at the airport. From exploring what we might need to take with us on holiday, by packing a suitcase with our Early Years Groups, right the way through to touring the terminal building with our KS4 groups, we have amazing activities for everyone, to cover all aspects of Airport life from who the people are that help us at the airport, right the way through to the developments in the IT systems that are used! We really do have it all. The most popular activity for all of our groups has to be hopping into the pilot's seat and of course watching the awesome A380 land into Manchester.

What does a typical day at Runway Visitor Centre look like, and what are some of the most popular aspects with School groups?

"Our school tours start at 10:30, but our team is here way before then, ensuring that we have everything ready for the schools arrival. We can accommodate up to 120 children per day on our tours, so you can imagine that a lot of planning and running to strict timings is a must, to ensure that our groups get the best experience possible from their time with us! Some of our groups will be enjoying some role play activities in the cabin of our retired DC10, whilst others will be learning about some of the different buttons & switches help us to fly the aeroplanes in the Flight Deck, other groups may be exploring some of the other aircraft we have at the Park, whilst others may be "plane spotting" up on our viewing mound, so there is always lots to learn and lots of activity taking place! Our tours finish at 14:30, when our Tour Guides come for a well-deserved cup of tea before starting to look at what we have happening for the rest of the week! Visiting Concorde is always a highlight for our school groups, this activity is not included in the tours, but, if the Hangar is free we will always try to sneak in to have a little look at this Iconic aircraft.

airport school group

What Key Stage groups can you cater for at Runway Visitor Centre?

"We cater for all ages! We run tours for Early Years groups right the way through to University Groups, we have even run tours for U3A & WI Groups who are looking for something a little bit different to do!

Can activities be tailored to suit the particular learning objectives of groups?

"We have our standard tours, however, if a school group have specific requirements or learning objectives we can work with these groups to tailor our tour to meet their needs. To arrange this we need plenty of advanced notice so that our team can be as creative as possible with their ideas, and have them approved by the group leader.

Can you cater for SEN Schools at Runway Visitor centre?

"Of course! We actively encourage all groups to come visit us, we really can cater for all!

Getting Groups Through the Airport

  • Trip Planning Guides

Several members of our team are former teachers and so have plenty of experience of guiding their own groups through the airport on school trips. Here are their top tips.

With a bit of forward planning, getting your group through the airport doesn't need to be stressful.

Here are our school travel experts' top tips on making the experience as easy and hassle-free as possible:

Have a chat about behaviour beforehand

It’s a really good idea to have a chat with your students with regards to your expectations of their behaviour while going through the airport.

Customs and security personnel are unlikely to find the same things funny as a group of teenagers and things could get pretty awkward, especially in countries like the USA.

Make copies

It's a really good idea to take a copy of everyone's boarding pass, in case anyone loses it.

You might also want to consider taking copies of everyone's passport too.

I wanted to write and tell you what a terrific job you did with our trip. I’ve been traveling since 1980 and this was the easiest trip ever for me. I simply had to do nothing but teach! It’s hard to believe it’s taken me this long to get it right, slow learner! The students and parents have had nothing to say but wonderful things…

Nan Moore Male High School

You have been so wonderful with our parents and students throughout the entire course of this tour. I am so glad we signed on with Music Travel Consultants/Educational Destinations as you gave our group the red carpet treatment every step of the way.

Janis Stackhouse Bloomington High School North

Music Travel Consultants/Educational Destinations is top-notch. The professionalism of the staff and their attention to detail is a director’s dream come true. My students and I have traveled with them four times over the past several years and I can say that “I won’t leave home without them!

Jena Adrianson Lawrence Central High School

I can’t say enough good things about Educational Destinations. They had everything covered and it was a relaxing and fun trip. My students and parents commented that it was the best trip we have ever taken. I’m ready to plan another trip with this company.

I recently had the pleasure of going on a Disney Trip with our band from Eastern High School in Greentown, IN. I was skeptical about going but am so glad I did. My Grandson and I came in rather late and had no problems whatsoever in getting onto your site, paying for our trip, and having confirmation that we were good to go.

Dianna Workinger Greentown, IN

Being able to trust implicitly the people who are planning what we will see, the timing of the itinerary, and the traveling arrangements is comforting not only to our staff but also to our parents. For our parents to know that this is a company that we use year after year with great results gives them the peace of mind that their children will experience the safest trip possible.

Mrs. Kathy Schubel Principal, St. Bartholomew Catholic School

I wanted to thank you so much for such a great trip! Our kids had a wonderful time and I could not imagine how we would have seen all that we were able to see without having you organize this trip for us.

Angie Remington Madison-Grant Elementary Students

I have worked with Educational Destinations on a yearly basis since 2001 and ED is the best educational travel group our school has ever worked with. It is refreshing to know that during the course of a trip that if any questions or problems arise, we have the consultant, whom we have worked with all year, right there with us to answer all questions and take care of the tickets and timing. It makes the trip very relaxing and enjoyable and a trip our kids never forget.

Darrin Russell 8th Grade U.S. History, Mitchell High School

I have been coordinating educational field trips for my school for the past 10 years and could not be happier with Educational Destinations. From the very first brainstorming session to the moment we return home from our trip, Educational Destinations works tirelessly to make sure our trips are memorable and successful. They are always quick to answer my questions, which I truly appreciate. Michael, Robin, and Ryan have been fantastic to work with over the years and I highly recommend them!

Kris Samick Spencer-Owen Community School Corporation

Educational Destinations has taken the stress out of planning and traveling with a large group. As a teacher, I am now able to actually enjoy the time I have with my students instead of worrying about all of the necessary details. From the very first contact made to the last moment of the trip and beyond, each and every person we have interacted with from Educational Destinations has been professional, concerned about fulfilling our needs, and exceptionally conscientious.

8 Airport Tours for Kids in Southern California

airport school trip

One of my favorite aspects of planning field trips is finding unique places to visit in Southern California.  Taking a field trip to your local airport is one of them!

Spending time at your local airport is an educational and fun way to watch what happens at the airport. This works best at airports that are not extremely busy, although that depends on the age and temperament of your children.

What You Learn On An Airport Tour

Most airports prefer to offer tours in the morning, but not all.   Take the airport shuttle, train, or other public transport and save yourself the hassle of driving and parking.  This is as much a part of the learning experience as the visit itself.  Depending on your children’s interests and where you are observing from, there are a variety of things you will see.

  • Planes taking off and landing
  • Aircraft maintenance
  • Bags going across the tarmac and onto a plane and/or being unloaded
  • Plane food being loaded
  • Aviation security people driving and walking around the plane areas
  • Planes being towed backwards to take them to the runways or hangars

8 Airport Tours in Southern California

There are 8 airport tours for kids in Southern California.

Fullerton Airport Tour , Fullerton

Do you love airplanes? Spending time at your local airport is an educational and fun way to watch what happens at the airport. This works best at airports that are not extremely busy, although that depends on the age and temperament of your children. Some airports even offer group tours.

The Fullerton Airport is the only general aviation airport in Orange County.   It is located three miles from Knott’s Berry Farm and six miles from Disneyland.  The airport is completely self-supporting and operates on an open air field.

I led a field trip to the Fullerton Airport back in 2014 and it was by far, the best airport tour we have ever been on.  The volunteers were kind and very knowledgable about their craft.  We even got to meet a CHP helicopter pilot at The California Highway Patrol Metro Squadron hanger!

Do you love airplanes? Spending time at your local airport is an educational and fun way to watch what happens at the airport. This works best at airports that are not extremely busy, although that depends on the age and temperament of your children. Some airports even offer group tours.

The Fullerton Airport offers FREE  tours for public schools located within the Fullerton Unified School District.  Tours for all other groups is $4 per person.  To book your own tour, please call (714) 738-6323.

Van Nuys Airport , Van Nuys

The Van Nuys Airport offers a  FREE award-winning educational and tour program.  The tour gives visitors a close-up look at a wide variety of aircraft and a glimpse into the many activities of aviation companies and operations at VNY.  Visitors also learn about VNY’s contributions in providing vital community services and its rich and colorful history – such as its use over the years as a frequent backdrop for Hollywood films and television shows.

For the youngest visitors, a special feature of the tours involves a visit to “Vinny,” the airport’s colorful mascot and Southern California’s first kid-friendly educational airplane.  Designed to be airborne, Vinny is accessible as a hands-on experience for children.

Tours run about 90 minutes and are offered to children (first grade and up) and adults on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and select Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.  For reservations, call (818) 442-6526.

Western Museum of Flight @ The Torrance Airport , Torrance

Do you love airplanes? Spending time at your local airport is an educational and fun way to watch what happens at the airport. This works best at airports that are not extremely busy, although that depends on the age and temperament of your children. Some airports even offer group tours.

The Western Museum of Flight is a non-profit, educational institution dedicated to preserving and displaying aircraft history and artifacts of Southern California’s aviation heritage.  The Air Museum’s educational programs give children an opportunity to see and touch the airplanes that made aviation history and take an inside look at completed and in-progress aircraft restoration projects.  The Western Museum of Flight’s collection includes numerous Warbirds, aircraft and target drones, piston and jet aircraft engines, aircraft components, aircraft ejection seats, World War II instruments, aircrew accessories, and an extensive model aircraft collection.

When we visited, not only did we get to see a variety of airplanes, but we got to sit in them too!  This was the highlight of our visit.

The Western Museum of Flight is technically not an airport, but if you go on just the right day, their volunteers might take you out to look at the airplanes on Torrance Airport’s air strip.

Admission is $5.00 per person (12 and up).  Child 11 and younger are FREE.

Long Beach Airport , Long Beach

Long Beach Airport offers guests a behind the scenes glimpse of aviation operations, aviation history, classic architecture and mosaic artwork.  The tour is available FREE to groups ages eight and up with advanced reservations.

Check by submitting a request form. You will receive an email reply notifying you whether or not your dates for the program requested are available. If your date(s) are approved, you will need to reply to this e-mail confirming the date(s) so that we may send you a confirmation/invoice letter for your desired program.

Do you have a space to eat lunches? Is there a place to purchase lunches onsite?

Currently, our indoor eating spaces are open but restricted to individuals or small groups. We recommend eating lunch outdoors or offsite to help with public safety. We only sell snack items in our gift shop, but there are plenty of places to order from nearby and have lunches for your group delivered.

How long are education programs?

Programs are normally 45 minutes long (30 minutes for our early childhood programs). When your program date is confirmed, you will receive additional information about your schedule a week prior to your scheduled date.

When is payment due?

Payment is due the day of the scheduled field trip. We cannot provide refunds so please make sure you have accurate numbers on your invoice whenever you make payment.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, we currently have a grant for our planetarium programs for Title I Schools. After filling out a Field Trip Request Form, please contact our Education Department for information regarding this.

What happens if we're late?

If you’re scheduled for a guided tour and/or program, you should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your first program. When unexpected traffic delays your arrival, please contact the Education Department or call the front desk (214.350.1651) if possible. We will do our best to accommodate your group, but we are unable to guarantee an adjusted schedule.

What's the maximum number of students per program?

For our SPOC planetarium, we can fit a maximum of 30 students and 1 adult at a time. We also schedule a maximum of 40 students for our classroom programs, with some slight exceptions. If scheduling an auditorium program, we can serve up to 200 students at a time.

How many hours should we schedule for a field trip?

That depends on what your group is doing! If your group is only planning on a self-guided tour, we recommend about an hour. If your group is going to do a guided tour and/or an education program, we schedule each activity for 45 minutes at a time. If you choose to do one education program,  you would schedule two to three hours (dependent on your group’s size) along with additional time for lunches. Majority of booked groups will plan to stay from 10am-1pm (3 hours) if they are doing a program.
