Citi ® has a name for offering travel-related services, particularly in the credit card arena. While some of its travel credit cards are directly affiliated with American Airlines, others offer a wide range of travel benefits, from enhanced points earning capability to cash back .
Given the broad assortment of cards available, it pays to take the time to filter through and decide which is the best Citi travel credit card for you. Here’s an overview of the features and benefits of the top five Citi travel card options.
Top 5 Citi Travel Cards
Best for: Overall travel rewards
The best card to maximize overall travel rewards within the Citi family is the Citi Premier card . For starters, new cardholders can earn a big sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after spending $4,000 on the card in the first three months after opening an account. This provides the equivalent of $600 in gift cards right off the bat. The bonus points can also be redeemed for travel rewards.
However, the true value of the card is in the accruals for daily spending. The Citi Premier card offers triple points in not just one but a number of popular spending categories, from supermarkets and restaurants to gas stations, air travel and hotels. This alone makes it a contender for one of the most valuable Citi travel cards, as it rewards not just travel costs but also general, everyday spending .
Although the card has no foreign transaction fees, it does have an annual fee of .
Best for: High spending in one category
If you’re looking to earn the maximum points in the areas in which you spend the most, the Citi Custom Cash card could be just the ticket. Rather than simply providing a flat cash-back rate or offering quarterly bonus categories, this card actually pays you its maximum cash-back rate of 5% on your highest-spending category, up to $500 in purchases each billing cycle.
For example, if you spend $500 on groceries in one month and $400 on travel, you’ll earn 5% cash back on that $500 grocery spend. If in the following month you spend $500 on travel and only $400 on groceries, you’ll instead earn 5% cash back on your $500 travel spend.

This type of cash-back structure ensures that you’ll earn the most cash back you can every single month without having to worry about where you are allocating your spending. The only caveat is that your cash back is limited to the first $500 you spend in your top category every month. However, for a card with no annual fee , this is still a generous cash-back rate.
The Citi Custom Cash card also comes with some other perks, including a 0% introductory APR for 15 months on both purchases and balance transfers — followed by rates of 18.24% – 28.24% APR — although there is a 5% balance transfer fee. There’s also a 3% foreign transaction fee.
However, you’ll earn $200 cash back after spending just $1,500 in the first six months of card ownership.
Best for: ThankYou Rewards points
If collecting your benefits in the form of ThankYou Rewards points is your style, you might be well suited for the Citi Rewards+ card .
This card doesn’t have an annual fee but still provides 2x ThankYou Rewards points at gas stations and supermarkets for the first $6,000 per year. All other purchases net one point per dollar spent. Plus, for a limited time, earn 5 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on hotel, car rentals, and attractions (excluding air travel) booked on the Citi Travel℠ Portal through June 30, 2024.
A 20,000-point sign-up bonus is available to new cardholders who spend $1,500 in the first three months of card ownership. Cardholders are also granted a 10% bonus on up to the first 100,000 ThankYou Rewards points they redeem per year.
This card does have a 3% foreign transaction fee. However, for the first 15 months after you open the account, you can also avail of a 0% APR on both purchases and balance transfers, after which the rates are APR.
Best for: Regular travelers
Fans of American Airlines who don’t spend their whole lives traveling may enjoy the perks of the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. Some of the card’s most valuable perks include priority boarding and a free checked bag , not just for yourself but also for up to four travel companions on domestic itineraries.
When compared with the card’s modest $99 annual fee, the baggage perk alone typically makes the card worthwhile, as even a couple checking one bag each on a domestic round-trip itinerary would face $120 in fees. The annual fee is waived for the first year, plus the card has no foreign transaction fees .
On top of offering 2x miles on eligible American Airlines purchases and at restaurants and gas stations, the card also offers a lucrative bonus of 50,000 American Airlines miles after you spend $2,500 in the first three months after opening an account. And after spending $20,000 with the card in one year, you can earn a $125 American Airlines flight discount.
Best for: No annual fee
Those looking for a simple, no-annual-fee credit card that still offers travel perks may gravitate toward the American Airlines AAdvantage Mileup card.
The card’s 10,000-mile sign-up bonus is modest, but it requires just $500 in spending in the first three months after account opening to earn it. Those meeting the minimum spend requirement will also earn a $50 statement credit.
Beyond that, the main perk of the card is the 2x miles it pays on grocery purchases and eligible American Airlines purchases. Cardholders also earn a 25% discount on in-flight food and beverages on American Airlines flights. This travel card does carry a 3% foreign transaction fee.
Which Citi Travel Card Is Right for You?
One way to find the right Citi travel card for you is to consider which reward structure will benefit you the most. Are you strictly interested in earning miles or would you prefer the flexibility of earning other types of rewards?
Also consider any fees involved. If the card has an annual fee, will the benefits and perks it offers allow you to offset the fee each year? And if the card has a foreign transaction fee, is it feasible for the amount of international travel you plan to do?
By considering the rewards, benefits and fees of each Citi travel card, you can better determine which one will work best with your lifestyle.
- Citi offers several travel credit cards with different perks and benefits, such as 0% introductory APR, no foreign transaction fees, a generous welcome bonus and a $100 annual hotel savings benefit.
- Citi offers several credit cards with no foreign transaction fees, such as the Costco Anywhere Visa card by Citi, Citi Premier card and Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard.
- The Citi Secured Mastercard is likely the easiest Citi card to get because it is for people with little to no credit and requires a security deposit.
- Citi cards allow you to earn ThankYou Points that you can redeem for travel.

Citi is out with an update to its travel portal, offering no fees and no interest on payment plans for those who need time to pay off the trips they’re booking.
While we’d never recommend taking on debt to travel, there’s definitely a market for splitting travel payments into 12 equal payments over the next year. And with the growing number of people looking to finance trips, the latest feature from Citi Travel and Citi Flex Pay makes sense.
Here’s what you need to know.
Many Americans are still paying off their travels from last year, according to a WalletHub survey . The same survey found that 1 in 3 Americans expect to have higher credit card balances at the end of 2024 than they have right now.
But that isn’t stopping people from traveling, creating a trend in which people go into debt to finance their travels , assuming they can pay off trips over time. Conversely, those who aren’t traveling cite costs and the inability to pay for the trips without incurring interest as primary factors for not booking the trips they want to take.
In response, Citi has rolled out a new feature to “buy now, pay later” using Citi Flex Pay when booking trips in the Citi Travel portal .
“To help cardmembers confidently book their next getaway, knowing they could pay responsibly and without fees or interest, Citi launched a buy now, pay later offering on Citi Travel with best in market $0 fee and no interest pricing,” said a spokesperson for Citi.
Using Citi Flex Pay — available to anyone with a Citi credit card — would-be travelers can split purchases into 12 equal, monthly payments of a fixed amount while checking out at Citi Travel . This option is available for purchases of $75 or more. It doesn’t require any additional application or credit to use this feature.
Citi Flex Pay is a “buy now, pay later” payment plan available for more than just travel purchases. It’s available on purchases of at least $75 , giving cardholders the option to split their purchases into monthly payments of a fixed amount.
Rather than incurring credit card interest, which happens when you don’t pay your card’s bill in full each month, cardholders can create plans to pay off a purchase over time. While these services are advertised as not having fees or interest, note that you will pay more in the long run than you would if you paid for an item in full at the time of checkout.
Thus, there is an additional cost for using “buy now, pay later.” For example, you might pay $110 for a $100 item because you chose to pay it off in 3 months, rather than paying the full amount on your credit card today.
Would you wind up paying more in interest, rather than using the payment plan? That’s the key number to check if you’re considering a “buy now, pay later” service like Citi Flex Pay.
Wondering what credit card interest is, how it’s calculated, and how to avoid it ? We’ve got the answers to your questions.
Citi cardholders who book trips through Citi Travel now have the option to pay those off over time by using Citi Flex Pay. This latest integration will likely catch the attention of those who need time to pay off trips they want to book. Just be sure to use the plans wisely if you plan to utilize this new feature.

BEST CITI CREDIT CARDS
Before applying, confirm details on the issuer’s website.
Citi Double Cash® Card
Our pick for: Flat-rate cash back
Year after year, the Citi Double Cash® Card has been a top choice among flat-rate cash-back cards. You earn 2% cash back on every purchase — 1% when you buy something and 1% when you pay it off. There's no 0% intro period for purchases and no bonus categories, but the high rewards rate more than makes up for the lack of bells and whistles. Read our review.
Citi Custom Cash® Card
Our pick for: Automatic 5% rewards
The Citi Custom Cash® Card offers a lot of value for a $0 annual fee: 5% back automatically in your eligible top spending category on up to $500 spent per billing cycle (1% back on other spending). The list of eligible 5% categories is varied and includes biggies like restaurants, grocery stores and more. And unlike with its competitors, there's no activation schedule or bonus calendar to keep track of. Read our review.
Citi's cash back credit cards — the Citi Double Cash® Card and the Citi Custom Cash® Card — technically earn rewards in the form of ThankYou points. These points are worth 1 cent apiece when redeemed for cash back. So "2% cash back" appears in your rewards account as 2 points per dollar spent, while "5% cash back" would appear as 5 points per dollar.
Citi Strata Premier℠ Card
Our pick for: Travel
The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card earns bonus points on select travel, supermarkets, dining, gas stations and EV stations. There's a solid sign-up bonus as well. Read our review.
Citi Simplicity® Card
Our pick for: Balance transfers + no late fees
The Citi Simplicity® Card has an excellent 0% intro APR period on balance transfers, and an OK one on purchases. It doesn't charge an annual fee, late fees or penalty APRs either. Read our review.
Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card
Our pick for: Balance transfers
The Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card offers a super-lengthy 0% intro APR period on balance transfers, and there's also a decent offer on purchases. But the balance transfer fee is pricey. It doesn't have the late-fee forgiveness of Citi's other balance-transfer card, but it's still a great option. Read our review.
Citi Rewards+® Card
Our pick for: Outsize rewards on small purchases
The Citi Rewards+® Card might not be right for everyone, but its unique rounding-up feature means that every purchase will earn at least 10 points. The card offers bonus rewards at gas stations and supermarkets and has no annual fee. And the 0% intro APR period shouldn't be overlooked. Read our review.
Citi® Secured Mastercard®
Our pick for: Building credit
The Citi® Secured Mastercard® is a straightforward card for people new to credit — put down a security deposit, use the card to establish a positive credit history and then move up to a better card (and get your deposit back). One note: This card is for people just starting out with credit, rather than people with bad credit from past mistakes. Read our review.
Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
Our pick for: Wholesale club shoppers
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi turns everyday spending into rewards you can redeem at Costco (although you can only redeem them once a year). You earn bonus rewards on gas, at restaurants, on travel and at Costco itself. There's no annual fee for the card, but you have to be a Costco member (which does require a fee). Read our review.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CITI CARD, AND WHY?
The Double Cash is, for me, the magical island of misfit spending. Paying your HOA fees? Your dentist? Your day care? Good luck finding a card with those as bonus categories. Put that spending on the Double Cash and at least get your 2% back.

WHAT CREDIT SCORE DO YOU NEED TO GET A CITI CREDIT CARD?
Most Citi credit cards require good to excellent credit to qualify, generally defined as a credit score of 690 or better. Keep in mind, though, that while credit scores are important, they're only one of the variables that credit card issuers use to decide whether you qualify for a given card. The application may ask about other factors, such as your income, employment and other debts. With any credit card, applying strategically can also increase your odds of approval.
The Citi® Secured Mastercard® is an option for those who are new to credit. This card requires a cash deposit to secure the credit line and doesn't offer any rewards. Learn how secured cards work.
WHAT ARE THE INTEREST RATES ON CITI CREDIT CARDS?
The interest rate that applies to your Citi credit card account depends on the card you apply for and your credit history. Most Citi cards specify a range of interest rates, which can be found in the Schumer box for the card. For example, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card offers an interest rate range of 20.74%-28.74% Variable APR . Your specific rate within that range will be determined based on your credit profile. Some cards, like the Citi Custom Cash® Card and the Citi Rewards+® Card , offer an introductory 0% APR period when you open your account.
WHAT CREDIT LIMIT CAN I GET WITH A CITI CREDIT CARD?
For most Citi cards, your credit limit will depend on your credit profile, including your credit score and payment history, as well as financial factors like your income and current obligations. For the Citi® Secured Mastercard® , your credit limit will be equal to the security deposit you put down (minimum of $200). Citi will review your account within 18 months to decide whether to refund your security deposit and transition you to a regular unsecured card .
HOW CAN I GET A CREDIT LIMIT INCREASE ON A CITI CREDIT CARD?
The easiest way to get a credit limit increase on your Citi card is just to ask for one. Call the number on the back of your card and ask a customer service representative about increasing your credit line. Citi may request a review of your credit report to increase your credit line, which might result in a hard pull .
Citi may also conduct periodic reviews of your account and automatically increase your credit line if you’ve been using the account responsibly. You may be able to improve your chances of an automatic increase by making on-time payments and not carrying a balance from month to month.
If you have an existing credit card with Citi and are approved for a new card, Citi will let you consolidate your credit limits and transfer a portion of your existing credit line to the new account. Call customer service and let them know how much of the existing credit line you’d like to transfer to the new account.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CITI CREDIT CARDS?
All Citi cards offer free access to a cardholder's FICO credit score from Eqiufax. Many cards come with targeted offers that let you earn bonus rewards by shopping with specific merchants. And most Citi cards offer access to Citi Entertainment deals.
The Citi Flex Loan program allows qualifying cardholders to borrow money against their card’s credit limit at a fixed interest rate; the loan can then be paid off with fixed monthly installments (similar to a car loan). The minimum loan is $500, and the maximum depends on your creditworthiness and available credit limit.
Additional benefits depend on the card. If you’re looking for travel rewards and benefits, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card offers a sign-up bonus, useful bonus rewards categories and the ability to transfer points to more than 15 travel loyalty programs. If you want to finance a new purchase, the introductory 0% APR offer on the Citi Custom Cash® Card might be worth checking out. Or if you are looking to consolidate debt under an introductory 0% APR balance transfer option, take a look at the Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card or Citi Simplicity® Card .
DOES CITI HAVE A PREAPPROVAL PROCESS FOR ITS CREDIT CARDS?
Citi lets you see whether you’re "pre-qualified" for any card offers. But pre-qualification does not necessarily guarantee approval when you apply for a card. The pre-qualification process includes a so-called soft pull of your credit report, which doesn't have any effect on your credit scores. Think of pre-qualification as a "soft yes" — it means the issuer estimates that it's likely you'll be approved. If you like what you see, you can formally apply for a card, which will involve a more detailed review and will result in a hard pull that can knock some points off your credit score.
CAN YOU COMBINE POINTS ON CITI CREDIT CARDS?
If you have multiple cards that earn Citi ThankYou points, you can consolidate the points on one account. This can be done online or by calling customer service. Although each ThankYou point is worth 1 cent when redeemed for a statement credit, regardless of what type of card you have, combining points has its benefits.
If you have both the Citi Double Cash® Card and the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card , you can move points to the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card account and gain access to travel partners with points earned on your Citi Double Cash® Card .
Or if you have the Citi Rewards+® Card , you can consolidate points to that account and earn a 10% rebate on the first 100,000 ThankYou points you redeem each year.
Citi also lets you share ThankYou points with other cardholders that also have a ThankYou points earning card. But be aware those points expire 90 days after they are shared. For more information on points sharing, refer to this FAQ from Citi.
IF MY APPLICATION FOR A CITI CARD IS DENIED, IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO GET APPROVED?
Citi has a reconsideration line you can call if an application is denied. A Citi representative will review the application and let you know why you were originally denied. Sometimes turning a denial into an approval is as simple as asking to reallocate credit from an existing card to the card you want to open. You won’t receive another hard pull, so there’s no harm in calling for reconsideration.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What’s the easiest citi card to get.
Citi’s credit cards mostly require good to excellent credit — think in terms of a credit score in the 700s and up. Generally, the more perks a card offers, the better your credit needs to be to qualify. If you're building credit, you could consider the Citi® Secured Mastercard® , which requires you to put down a security deposit. Note, however, that the Citi® Secured Mastercard® is mostly for people who are new to credit, not people who have bad credit because of past problems.
How do I cancel a Citi credit card?
You can cancel your Citi card online through the Citi website or app, by calling the number on the back of your card or by visiting a Citi bank branch. You’ll lose the available credit on your card when you cancel, but you may be able to transfer that credit line to another Citi card if you have one.
How many Citi credit cards can you have?
There is no limit to the number of Citi cards you can have at once. However, Citi has some specific rules you’ll want to know about before you apply for multiple Citi cards.
How do I activate a Citi credit card?
You can activate a new Citi card through the Citi website or mobile app, or by calling the number on the sticker on the front of your new card once you receive it in the mail.
How do I check my Citi credit card application status?
You can check your Citi card application status online or by calling 888-201-4523.

How to Save Money on Flights
For first-time travelers and even frequent flyers, booking an affordable flight can be a challenge. Nobody wants to overpay, but many don’t know how to avoid it, so the questions multiply: What's the best time to travel? What kind of flight should I take to save money? What are the advantages of a rewards program? Where should I book my flight?
The good news is that there are answers. Saving money on flights isn’t a guessing game. Following a few essential tips will make the process a little easier.
Travel on least crowded days
Airlines charge more on busier days, especially on major holidays such as July 4 th , Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. If you can, avoid the peak times to save money.
You can take the same approach regarding which day of the week to fly. Since most people depart and return on weekends, Fridays and Sundays are high-volume travel days. Flights on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday are less crowded and will save money. Also, be sure to check if any major events or conventions are occurring at your destination that could increase demand and push up the price of your ticket.
If you have the flexibility, you can take this strategy of avoiding peak times to save money to another level. Instead of choosing your destination and dates first and trying to save money second, reverse the order. Look for the best deals first and choose your destination and dates on those deals.
Book connecting flights when possible
Many people like the convenience of direct flights because they get you to your destination faster without the hassle of changing planes. But there is a cost. Because of the demand, direct flights are always more expensive than connecting flights.
Connecting flights are a better option if you're trying to save money. They can have other advantages, too, especially for international travelers who appreciate a rest stop between long flights. Also, some airlines offer free stopovers, which, in essence, are extended layovers between flights.
Stay flexible when looking at dates
For many people, scheduling travel involves figuring out which dates will least impact their schedules, applying for time off from work and then booking the flight. Once the dates are chosen, they seem set in stone, and the options for finding the lowest price are limited.
If you’re looking to save money, a better plan would be to first decide on approximate flight dates so that you have more options to find the best prices before committing. Sometimes changing travel dates by a few days can result in significant savings.
Use points or miles when you can
A great way to save money on flights is to join a rewards program. Airlines appreciate loyalty for a good reason. It means you will be a returning customer, and therefore, they will reward you with perks.
If you regularly fly a specific airline and are a rewards member, you can earn and accumulate points or miles every time you fly and redeem them for future discounts and upgrades. Some of the benefits of being a rewards member include discounted or free tickets (except for taxes and fees), priority booking, first-class upgrades and access to airport lounges.
Book tickets through a travel portal
Travel portals are online platforms managed by credit card issuers that offer various travel services, including bookings for hotels, airline tickets and rental cars.
The Citi Travel portal SM is a convenient way to book your flight if you have an eligible Citi ® card. It offers many filter and sorting options that search and compare flights by price, duration, flight times, connections, and even your favorite airline, making it easy to book the right flight. If you have an eligible Citi credit card, you can earn Thank You ® Points when you pay for part, or all, of your trip through the Citi Travel portal. You can also redeem your points towards flights and more through the Citi Travel portal.
