8 Airports That Offer FREE Layover Tours

Planning a trip that requires a connecting flight? It’s well worth looking into extending your layover if you can. This not only helps you break up the journey and adjust to the time difference, but it also allows you to check out a new destination.

And you know what’s better than a layover excursion? A FREE layover excursion! There are a number of airports across the world that offer free (or super cheap) layover tours. These are designed to give you an overview of everything the city has to offer in the hope that you will be encouraged to come back.

Personally, we’ve already taken one of the free layover tours mentioned in this guide and decided to do some more research on what else is on offer out there. These tours are usually in cities that are popular transit destinations, so there’s a chance you might already be passing through anyway. If you have between six and 24 hours to spare, it’s well worth considering.

So let’s jump right into eight fantastic layover tours you can take from airports across the world.

Singapore Airport

How long you need: At least 5.5 hours, and your layover should be less than 24 hours.

Where to book: Take your boarding passes to the registration booths in the transit areas at Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Do not leave the transit area!

Visa requirements: You are allowed to enter and exit Singapore once during your layover, which means you can join one tour.

Cost: Free! Singapore is expensive , to make the most of this boon!

Other considerations: Timings roughly coincide with peak transit times, but double-check this in advance. You can also book through your travel agent if they work directly with Singapore Airlines. Registration is first come first served and closes an hour before the tour.

Singapore is a dazzling city-state that needs no introduction. One of the world’s biggest economic hubs, the city is known for its pristine attractions and modern architecture. Beyond the glitzy sheen of the city centre you’ll also find a melting pot of Asian cuisines making this a real foodie destination.

Singapore Airport is considered the best airport in the world for many. It’s a major hub for travel between Europe, Australasia and North America, with many visitors to the city never leaving the terminal building. Singapore Airlines is hoping to change this with their three layover tours. Whether you’re interested in city sights, unique heritage or inner-city nature, there’s something for everyone. You’ll need to be on a Singapore Airlines flight, though some Air New Zealand and Scoot connections are eligible.  If you end up staying for longer, then check out our Singapore itinerary .

Seoul Airport

How long you need: Tours are between one and five hours, and your layover should be less than 24 hours. However, if you ever get the chance, then do stay in Seoul for a bit longer.

Where to book: There are three dedicated information desks in terminal one, and four in terminal two. You can also reserve online right here.

Visa requirements: If you are from one of the 110 countries that can enter Korea without a visa, you can participate in the tour. Otherwise, you will need a relevant visa.

Cost: Free!

Other considerations: After immigration, head straight to the first floor for the information desks. If there are no slots left online, you can still book a waiting list spot – this is first come, first served. In addition, these spots are awarded 30 minutes before the tour. If you do get an advanced spot, make sure you check-in before this deadline.

Seoul is the capital of South Korea and a major cultural hub in East Asia. There is a lot to see and do Seoul . From centuries-old temples to modern K-Pop concerts, the city boasts an eclectic spirit that is super infectious. The youthful atmosphere creates a progressive art scene, and there are endless night markets offering street food and cheap goods.

Incheon Airport is growing into a major hub for flights between Asia, Australasia and North America. They’ve seized the opportunity to create 10 incredible tours showcasing different aspects of Korean culture. Whether you’re interested in modern life, history or shopping, there’s a great selection on offer for those transiting through Seoul. Our favorite is the Seoul Old & New Tour, which offers a little taster of everything the city has to offer.

Tokyo Airport

How long you need: At least five hours as tours are usually around three hours long. There’s no upper limit on how long you’re staying, as some hotel guests can also enjoy these trips on arrival.

Where to book: Narita Transit Tourism Counter in both terminals. This desk is only open from 9:00-12:00, so you should book online if you arrive at a different time.

Visa requirements: Citizens from the 68 countries with a visa-free arrangement with Japan can head on the tours, although you are usually only allowed one entry and exit. Everyone else needs a visa.

Cost: Free-ish

Other considerations: The tours themselves are free and are guided by local volunteers training to work as full-time guides. You will have to cover your own transport costs and other related expenses. Only two of the tours come with buses (which you must also pay for) – the rest will require you to take public transport.

The Japanese capital, Tokyo, is a sprawling metropolis that is home to over 37 million people. This makes it one of the most diverse destinations in the world. Known for high-tech industries and flashing lights, there are also corners of Tokyo that offer a glimpse into Japanese history and tradition. This is an exciting city that you’ll never truly be able to know in its entirety.

Not that you’re expected to! A major benefit of layover tours is the ability to check out some of the highlights of your transit destination. Tokyo Narita Airport offers free excursions into the city with a local guide. These guides are usually volunteers trying to build experience, and they can offer you a fascinating insight into the city. The major difference with these tours is that they are private – this does mean you’ll have to cover your own transport, but it also gives you an intimate experience.

Taipei Airport

How long you need: Each tour lasts around four hours, but only passengers with a layover between seven and 24 hours are entitled to join in.

Where to book: Tourist Service Centre in the arrivals area – the desks are well signposted.

Visa requirements: You should be eligible for visa-free entry. Your passport will need at least six months left on it.

Other considerations: There are 18 seats available on each tour in total. Six of these can be reserved online from between two and four weeks prior to arrival – the rest are first-come-first-served on arrival.

You might know Taiwan as a disputed territory just off the coast of the Chinese Mainland. Known officially as the Republic of Taiwan, it shares cultural roots with the People’s Republic just across the sea. That being said, as a more democratic nation, it has a unique vibe that embraces modernity. The capital, Taipei, has grown into a major economic hub in East Asia, with jaw-dropping architecture and a mouthwatering culinary scene.

Taipei Taoyuan Airport was one of the first in the world to offer free layover tours, and this is the tour that we took. Offered by the local tourism board, guests are given a free keepsake of their stay as soon as they board the bus. There are two tours on offer – a city tour and a rural spa tour. You’ll be limited by time as one runs in the morning and the other in the evening. Our experience on the Taipei city tour let us check out the most popular sights, as well as enjoy some time at a local market with plenty of street food on offer.

Abu Dhabi Airport

How long you need: At least six hours to take the two to three-hour city tour (one hour after landing and two hours before departure), or an overnight stay at a complimentary hotel courtesy of Etihad depending on your chosen flight booking.

Where to book: You can book your stopover tour here , or check with Etihad Airlines if you’re looking to benefit from the free night in a hotel.

Visa requirements: Citizens from Australia, New Zealand, most of Europe and the Americas can enter the UAE visa free. Citizens from Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have freedom of movement in the UAE. Everyone else requires a visa in advance.

Cost: The hotel stay is free for Etihad passengers flying on certain routes, and the cheapest stopover tour is $39.50.

Other considerations: You need to arrive and depart with an Etihad flight to qualify for the free one or two-night stay in a hotel. If you would like to stay in a Abu Dhabi luxury hotel, they also offer a two-night-for-the-price-of-one deal. For those taking the stopover tour, you should arrive at the pick-up spot an hour before the tour starts. You will be told where this is when you book. Please dress modestly to respect local customs. There are changing spots at the airport.

That capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, is a sparkling diamond on the gulf coast. Similar to its more famous neighbour, Dubai, Abu Dhabi has undergone major transformations over the past few decades. Once a sleepy coastal town, it is now one of the most modern metropolises in the world. It’s not quite as showy as Dubai, but you’ll still get to live like a king while you’re here.

Abu Dhabi Airport used to do a free layover tour but this has since been discontinued. Nevertheless, there are still some great alternatives to choose from. If you’re flying with Etihad (including some connections with selected partners), you can enjoy a free night in a three or four-star hotel. Those that would rather something more luxurious can get one night for free or a two-night stay in a five-star hotel. Only in the city for a few hours? Abu Dhabi Sightseeing offers multiple layover tours – including city highlights, Ferrari World and a desert safari.

Why Should You Travel to The Airport with a Water Bottle?

Whilst there’s a lot that we can do when it comes to traveling responsibly , reducing your plastic consumption is one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do. Don’t buy one-use water bottles, don’t take plastic shopping bags, and forget straws. All of this just ends up in landfill or in the ocean.

Doha Airport

How long you need: At least six hours to be eligible. Qatar Airways suggests booking a tour that drops you off at the airport at least two hours before departure.

Where to book: You can book online in advance , or you can head to the Discover Qatar Transit Tours desk upon arrival.

Visa requirements: Citizens of 80 countries can enter Qatar visa-free, although you are only allowed one entry and exit.

Cost: $20-180 depending on transportation mode.

Other considerations: You must arrive at the tour desk 90 minutes before the tour starts or you may lose your place to other guests. Please remember to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. If you need to change at the airport, give yourself enough time to do so.

The capital of Qatar, Doha, follows the same trend as many other Persian Gulf cities. It has undergone a major transformation into a sparkling metropolis over the past few decades. Doha is still experiencing a lot of growth, so you’ll find a completely different city every time you visit. This leaves it with an exciting and progressive atmosphere when compared to its more established neighbours in the region.

As well as this, Qatar is also hosting to the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Doha , so if you’re traveling at the right time, consider checking out a game during your layover.

Like Abu Dhabi Airport, Doha Airport recently discontinued its free tour. Luckily, Qatar Airlines have teamed up with Discover Qatar to offer a variety of affordable alternatives. You can opt to join a large group tour or embark on a private excursion. Either way, the most iconic attractions in Doha are included in all of them. This is more than just a whistlestop tour – you’ll also spend some time in larger attractions such as the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif.

Because Doha is a huge transit hub, you may find you have a long layover here. If you have a long layover, consider finding a place to stay in the city with easy transport links to the airport.

Istanbul Airport

How long you need: Passengers should have a layover of between six and 24 hours to be eligible.

Where to book: Head to the Hotels Desk at International Arrivals in Istanbul Airport.

Visa requirements: You can obtain an e-visa online before departure. If you’re running late, you can also arrange this with the Turkish Airlines Ticket Desk at your departure airport.

Cost: Free, but budget some money for sampling food.

Other considerations: The longer tours actually have fewer stops, but this is to give you time in some of the city’s biggest attractions. You’ll need some extra cash for admission fees. The shorter tours don’t spend a significant amount of time in each location, but you’ll stop for some photo opportunities. You have no choice but to spend some time at the restaurant. Of course, you’re under no obligation to order anything, but some guests feel awkward about doing that.

Straddling the Bosphorus, Istanbul is spread across two continents! As you might expect with this kind of geography, it encapsulates a wide array of cultures. Istanbul has been central to Mediterranean history for centuries , and it doesn’t plan on winding down anytime soon. Bustling markets, breathtaking architecture and modern nightlife make the city a must-visit.

Touristanbul is a free layover tour offered by Turkish Airlines. Istanbul Airport is a huge transit hub that connects Europe and North America with Asia. The tour offered takes you around some of the most iconic attractions, and even includes a stop at a local restaurant. You’ll leave wishing you had even more time to experience this enchanting destination.

Salt Lake City Airport

How long you need: A couple of hours should suffice, but get back to the airport at least 90 minutes before departure.

Where to book: At the Church of Latter Day Saints Desk

Visa requirements: You’ll need to apply to the Visa Waiver Program if you are from outside the United States or Canada. This is eligible to 39 countries. All other nationalities will need a visa.

Other considerations: This isn’t so much a tour as it is a trip to a church – but it’s a free return journey from the airport and takes you right into the heart of the city. You don’t have to enter the church when you arrive, and you’re given plenty of time to explore other parts of the city.

Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city of Utah. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, it is also the hub for the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

So why on earth is it the only city outside of Asia to offer a layover tour? Well, it isn’t so much a tour as free transport to the (big and impressive) Mormon Church . You don’t actually have to visit the church when you arrive, but if you happen to have a layover in Salt Lake City, this is a great way to get to all the museums in the city centre without spending a dime on transport.

Final Thoughts

Most of these tours are free, so if you’ve got a long layover planned already there’s really nothing stopping you from exploring a new city. If you’re still planning your trip, check out the arrival and departure times of connecting flights before booking. The biggest airlines in these hubs often coordinate their flights to allow you to take these trips.

We loved our free trip in Taipei so much that we decided to book another dedicated trip to the bustling city. Make good use of your tour guide to figure out what you might want to visit on a longer trip to the destination. Even if the contents of the tour aren’t for you, there might be some hidden gems that will bring you back.

Either way, it’s a win-win for everyone concerned! These tours are mostly free (and even those that charge aren’t extortionate), so you have nothing to lose by hitting up one of these transit destinations. You might surprise yourself and find a new favorite spot on the globe.

Luckily, some airports around the world offer free airport layover tours and in-transit city tours, providing travelers with an opportunity to explore the nearby city. In this guide, I’m sharing six airports that offer complimentary airport layover tours and how airport layover tours operate.

What are free airport layover tours?

Airport layover tours, in-transit city tours, airport stopover tours ,… they go by various names, but they all spell inexpensive entertainment during a long layover and I love them. As a traveler who loves taking advantage of long layovers, I’ve started test driving airport layover tours!

Free airport layover tours are airport guided tours that help you spend your waiting time by offering a unique glimpse into the local culture and city attractions of each destination. Sometimes they are tied to a specific airlines or airport who is partnering with the tourism board.

Either way, they are are almost always a partnership between the airport and the city’s tourism board as a complimentary service that allows travelers with long layovers, the opportunity to have a taste of their city in the hopes you’ll return for a longer stay. Some airport layover tours are free, and others are offered at a discounted cost and still budget-oriented.

When passing through Qatar Airport, I wanted to do the sand dune tours, which were offered by the airport and tourism board at a discounted price which was a quarter of how much I would’ve expected it to cost. It was still a complimentary cost given out of the tourism board’s hospitality and ahem.. I’ve worked with tourism boards to know their goal is not to profit as a private entity. Unfortunately however, my timetable didn’t align. Instead, I went to the airport layover tour kiosk and took a discounted Doha city sightseeing tour at night! So keep reading as i’ll share more of that experience!

How do airport guided tours work (step-by-step process).

1. Find the layover city tour kiosk and check tour schedules : Often, the airport will have a tour desk or kiosk in the terminal and one outside the terminal in Arrivals, where you can sign up and book a tour. In specific cases, like my layover with Turkish Airlines , I needed to check in with the Turkish Airlines customer support desk, where they handled the city tour and in-transit hotel.

Tip: Research airport guided tour options in advance so you’re prepared before arriving.

2. To qualify for an airport layover tour, you need to meet the layover duration requirement. They take this seriously because the city layover tour program is responsible for ensuring you return on time for your flight.  They have gauged how much time is required to complete the tour and get back to your gate. The kiosk attendant will check your flight ticket itinerary and passport to see that you qualify with enough hours for the layover tour.

3. Passing through immigration without a visa: If you check in and sign up for a tour, with the city tour kiosk inside your terminal,  the tour desk attendant escorts you through immigration. They inform immigration officials that you are on a transit tour, so if there is a visa requirement, they skirt you through the visa part without any issues. Remember, their responsibility is to get you on the tour and back to the airport on time so you can resume your trip connection.

4. Check in with the city tour desk and wait: After clearing immigration, you then proceed to the city tour desk outside Arrivals. This is where they double check your flight ticket, collect passengers and guide them to board the city tour bus .

5. Drop your luggage at left luggage: Prepare in advance for your tour and pack light for carry-on luggage to check at the airport or anti-theft essentials purse . I use Hynes Eagle convertible carry-on for lightweight travel ease. There are options for storage, so keep reading.

6. Take the city tour and make sure you show up at the appointed times. Some tours offer a very guided experience. Others, you may receive a guide who prepares and informs you about the next location while on the bus then, you get dropped at the location and told when to meet back.

Tip: Always be on time for the pickup and take a photo of the bus location spot in case you get lost and need to ask help from locals.

7. Return to the city tour desk: After your free airport city tour is complete, you will be returned to the city tour desk outside Arrivals and the tour is complete.

Tip: Don’t forget to pick up your luggage at the desk or with left luggage.

8. Get back to your gate in time to board your connecting flight: You must then go through airport security and immigration again but on your own. This part of the journey back to your gate is your responsibility.

6 free airport layover tours and in-transit city tours.

I’ve listed the airport layover tours I know of. If you Google airport layover tours , you might get a handful of listings for city tours for layovers, but you must be careful as some of them are private tour companies. You will be required to do real research, so i’d follow the airport links on my page and try to stay closely aligned to them.

1. Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) – Free Singapore City Tour

A favorite airport of many travelers is Singapore Changi Airport. Known for its world-class amenities, indoor garden and waterfall, it offers a complimentary city tour for passengers with layovers between 5.5 and 24 hours. It is a sprawling airport and you will fill your hours taking a stroll. There are four tour itineraries offered and it is open to all in-transit passengers.

Explore iconic landmarks like Gardens by the Bay, enjoy Singapore’s vibrant heritage culture and more.

Check the requirements and details on the Changi Airport website . Singapore Airlines and Scoot passengers can book online here . Other passengers can make reservations at the tour booth at Terminals 3 & 4. You must abide by visa regulations .

2. Istanbul Airport (IST) – Touristanbul City Tour

Turkish Airlines invites passengers with layovers at Istanbul Airport between 6 and 24 hours to embark Touristanbul a guided in-transit city tour of this historical city. Explore Istanbul on a layover? It’s a good deal.

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of Istanbul by visiting landmarks such as the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. The tour lasts approximately 6 hours

You don’t need to book in advance; just show up at the Hostel Desk of the International Arrivals Terminal of İstanbul Airport or from the Touristanbul Desk Office in the Transfer desk area. Check the Touristanbul for restrictions.

3. Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) – Discover Qatar Tour

Hamad International Airport in Doha offers passengers with layovers between 4 and 8 hours the opportunity to explore Qatar with the Discover Qatar Tour . There are 4-6 tours to choose from from a Doha highlights tour, desert tour, golfing tour and three airport tour where you can tour the airport, play squash or simulated golf!  These are not free but most are inexpensive.

I did the Discover Doha tour and loved it. We took a city bus with a guide told us about the sites we visited and about Qatar culture. We stopped at a handful of top sights like Katara Cultural Village, Dhow Corniche, Doha Harbour, Museum of Islamic Arts, the Golden Masjid, etc… and drove by others. Unfortunately it was a night tour so much of our sightseeing was of beautifully lit architecture with occasional guided walk-throughs and peek-ins of these locations.  My favorite was visiting the vibrant markets of Souq Waqif ; it certainly made me wish I had longer in Doha. The bus was nice and spacious and they gave us complementary bottled water. The tour duration for the Doha city tour was around 4 hours.

4. taiwan taoyuan international airport (tpe) – half-day tour taiwan.

Passengers with layovers between 7 and 24 hours at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport can join a free half-day in-transit city tour of Taipei. You must be from a country eligible for visa-exempt entry or have valid R.O.C. visa. Tour is limited to 18 seats. You can pre-book anywhere from 5 to 90 days before arrival.

Visit notable attractions such as Taipei 101 and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The half-day tour is approximately 4 hours, while the full-day tour is around 7 hours. I’ve already been to Taiwan twice and I didn’t know these existed, so I’m excited to catch it on my next visit.

5. Incheon International Airport (ICN) – City Transit Tours in Seoul

Incheon Airport offers a rich handful of free to inexpensive airport stopover tours for passengers with layovers between 4 and 24 hours. They have city tour desks in Terminal 1 and 2. They have anything from airport tours, temple tours, historical tours and more. They have a good selection to explore the beauty of Seoul, Incheon or anything nearby. The tour duration varies, with options for 1.5 to 5 hours. Check the requirements on the Incheon Airport website .

I did the Hongdae tour, where we had a tour leader on the bus to tell us about Korea and make sure we were all accounted for. The Hongdae tour was a free time where we could explore Hongdae for an hour and then return to the bus.  Much of the time was absorbed by a roughly 45 minute drive from Incheon Airport into Seoul and back. But I did appreciate the little time I spent in Hongdae walking the crowded shopping streets (okay, kinda running)  and then spending time at a popular food stall eating fishcake on a stick ( eomuk-guk ) and tteokbokki. Soooo good.  The bus was comfortable and had free onboard wifi.

6. Riga International Airport (RIX) – Riga City Tour

Travelers with layovers over 5 hours at Riga International Airport qualify for an airport tous. They are not free and there is no itinerary on the website, so you will need to email them. There are other websites that offer free city tours, but this is not affiliated with the transit service.  Learn more on the Riga City tour .

Make sure to check the specific requirements and details on the respective airport websites before planning your airport layover adventure. From Singapore to Amsterdam, these airport stopover tours are an excellent way to turn a layover into a mini-vacation.

What if you are carrying luggage with you?

If you know in advance that you’re planning to do an in-transit tour, it’s best to check your luggage beforehand. Otherwise, you’ll need to take it with you on your tour. I use Hynes Eagle convertible carry-on for lightweight carry-on travel ease. It’s compact so it doesn’t take up much room and sometimes, there is space on the bus for you to store it. Airport tours have either let me store my luggage at their kiosk desk or on the tour bus.

If you’re friendly and the tour desk agent is having a good day, sometimes they allow you to store your luggage behind the tour desk. I stored my carry-on duffle bag there because I did not have valuables in it, other than souvenirs. The tour desk attendants are not responsible for any lost or missing valuables.

Another option is to store your carry-on in the airport’s left luggage facility. They typically charge by hour or half/full day rates.

Tip: Carry your valuables and do not leave them in your carry-on luggage.

Should you tip your guide on an in-transit city tour?

The amount can vary depending on the length and nature of the tour, and the responsibilities of the guide. Tipping acknowledges the guide’s efforts in making your layover experience enjoyable and informative. It also fosters a positive relationship with local tourism services, ensuring a pleasant connection between travelers and the destination. Always consider the cultural norms of the country you’re in, as tipping practices can vary widely. If the tour is free, then I definitely like to gift my guide something.

What if I told you that you can get a FREE mini-vacation on the way to your destination – and you wouldn’t have to plan a bit of it? Intrigued?

If you’ve ever had to kill time during a long airport layover, it’s not fun. Airport chairs are uncomfortable, shopping and food options are usually limited, and crowds and noise can become exhausting.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. There’s a way to turn a long layover into a vacation.

Free transit tours – the secret to a long layover

What’s the secret to a 2-for-1 vacation? Free stopover tours during a long layover! They are an inexpensive way to promote tourism and encourage more travelers to fly through a city’s airport. Passengers are grateful for the invigorating relief from their long-haul trips, especially because they come at no cost and help prevent jet-lag. Win-win!

These free excursions are enjoyable ways to get a taste of a new city, with all transportation and logistics conveniently arranged by someone who knows the destination well. They will whisk you out of the airport to show you popular tourist attractions, and get you back to the airport in time to catch your next flight.

There’s really no reason to waste hours of your life aimlessly walking around an airport until your next flight departs, if you can take advantage of your situation. It’s so easy to do, as long as you ensure that your layover will be long enough to participate in a tour, at the time the tour is offered, and that you are eligible for the tour.

Here are some of the best airlines that offer free stopovers for transit passengers, plus links to their websites where you can find the most up-to-date booking details. Although transit tours are also available in many other cities, these are the ones that are completely free.

Istanbul, Turkey – Atatürk Airport

• Layover time needed: Layover must be between 6-24 hours.

Turkey’ has many beautiful places to visit and is super affordable, making it a popular tourist destination. But even if you have a connecting international flight on Turkish Airlines, you can make use of the free Touristanbul service to discover Istanbul.

Trust us: This tour is enjoyable. In just a few hours, you will be able to see the most significant historical sights of a city that has been the center of world civilizations. Lunch (and sometimes breakfast) is included.

Available tours: Touristanbul offers 5 extensive tours, which last for 6 or 9 hours. The different tours cover the city’s most famous sights, such as the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern.

How to apply: Sign up at the Hotel Desk in the International Arrivals Terminal of Istanbul Airport. It is located after passport and customs control next to Starbucks.

• Travelers must apply for an evisa before arrival. CHECK VISA INFO HERE .
• You must arrive at the tour desk at least 1 hour before the tour starts (8:00 am for the 9:00 tours and 11:00 am for the 12:00 tour). For tours ending at 15:00, flight departure time must be 16:30 or later. For the 6-hour tour ending at 18:00, flight departure time must be 19:30 or later. See the website’s FAQ page for details.
• If your layover is overnight, you are eligible for a free hotel stay instead. If you prefer accommodation, contact the hotel desk for terms and conditions.
• Passengers may not get both free accommodation and TourIstanbul tours on the same journey.

Singapore – Changi Airport (suspended until further notice)

• Layover time needed: Layover time must be between 5.5 hours and 24 hours for you to join one of their free 2.5-hour guided tours.

You may just be passing through, but this tiny Asian country definitely has a lot to offer. Singapore’s multicultural sights, energy and electricity are enthralling.

There are two bus tour itineraries (seven times daily) which each include two short photo stops at famous landmarks; and one walking tour itinerary (two times daily) to Jewel Changi Airport, featuring some of its attractions

• Passengers can join only one tour during each stopover.
• Availability of seats is on a first-come-first-served basis.
• Tour itinerary may change, depending on weather and traffic conditions.

Available tours:

• Heritage Tour – The Heritage Tour brings you through the colonial and cultural districts – Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam – with a short stopover at the Merlion Park where you get a photo opportunity with the symbol of Singapore. The second stopover is at Kampong Glam, one of Singapore’s colourful ethnic precincts.
• Jewel Tour – Discover a wondrous world where nature meets retail through this 2.5 hours walking tour showcasing Changi Airport latest development, Jewel. Immerse into a lush green sanctuary as you hike through the Forest Valley, marvel at the Rain Vortex, and sample local delicacies at Five Spice. Traverse through Canopy Park and discover the many attractions housed within the park! 
• City Sights Tour – Stop at Merlion Park, where you can get a photo with a piece of history of the Lion City, the Merlion, against the magnificent cityscape of our world-class attractions in their night-lights – Singapore Flyer, Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade, of all others. The tour also offers another short stopover at Gardens by the Bay.

Where to register: Both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 have a Free Singapore Tour booth. In Terminal 2, it is on Level 2, Departure Transit Hall (next to Orchid Garden). In Terminal 3, you’ll find it on Level 2, Departure Transit Hall (next to Discover Singapore).

Seoul, Korea – Incheon International Airport

• Layover time needed: Layover must be at least 4 hours long. Tours last between 1 and 5 hours.

Instead of sitting at the gate and waiting for the next flight, turn your Korean layover into a cultural experience. The Korean Tourist Board offers exciting transit activities and tours at Incheon International Airport. They will give you an opportunity to experience some of the popular sights and sounds of Korea.

All of the free tours include an English-speaking tour guide, so even those who do not speak Korean can enjoy the tours without any difficulties.

Available tours: Choices include an Incheon City Tour, Seoul City Tour, Temple Tour, and several others.

• You must be eligible to enter Korea.
• Incheon’s tours are almost free – they charge a fee of $10 USD (10,000 KWD).
• Availability is on a first-come-first-served basis.
• Site admission fees and meals must be paid by travelers.
• With the approval of the tour guides, you can get off tour bus and enjoy your trip by yourself.

Taipei, Taiwan – Taoyuan International Airport (suspended)

• Layover time needed: Layover must be at least 7 hours long.

Free half-day tours are offered on a first-come basis, and are limited to 18 passengers. You can choose between morning and afternoon departures.

Transit or transfer passengers with 7- to 24-hour layovers before their next connecting flight, who have valid R.O.C. visas or come from countries eligible for visa-exempt entry. (See website for details.)

• Morning Tour – Shou Sin Fang Creativity Wagashi and Cultural Center, Sanxia and Zushi Temple.
• Afternoon Tour – Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and Longshan Temple

Tokyo, Japan – Tokyo Narita Airport

• Layover time needed: You’ll need about 6 hours to do one of these tours.

If you have a layover at Narita Airport, choose from several tour options that let you tour Narita (Tokyo is too far away for a layover tour). You will experience Japanese warmth and hospitality along with some of our country’s history and culture, as well as shopping. You will also experience Japanese public transportation firsthand.

• Layover time needed: You will need a minimum of 6 hours for this tour.

Enrich every step of your journey with a complimentary tour of Doha, courtesy of Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism Authority.

Available tour: One tour is available, departing four times a day. This tour takes you to all of the city’s most famous sights, including the Pearl-Qatar artificial island, Katara Cultural Village, Souq Waqif Arabian market, and the Museum of Islamic Art.

• A maximum of 22 passengers can be accommodated on each tour.

Salt Lake City, USA

• Layover time needed: 2 hours

Do you have a layover at the Salt Lake International Airport? Well, you’re in luck! You don’t have to spend the afternoon watching planes take off. Why not check out the city and get a little sun?

As one person said, “Salt Lake is not New York. Why the heck would it want to be? It’s frickin’ perfect here.”

Available tours: Free tour of Temple Square, in the heart of Salt Lake City.

How to book it: Walk over to one of the two information desks and get the pickup and dropoff schedule. A desk agent can show you where to catch the shuttle.

Things to know before you get a free transit tour

• Scheduling: Take note of when you need to arrive for tours – some require you to show up 30 minutes to an hour beforehand. Similarly, ensure that your tour will arrive in plenty of time to clear customs and immigration before your next flight.
• Eligibility: Check what documents you will need to take the tour. It is common to need proof of your previous and ongoing flight, such as an airline ticket.
• Visas: “In-transit” passengers don’t always t need a visa to take airport layover tours. Check their websites for list of countries eligible for visa-free entry.
• Passports: You may need to hand over your passport for the length of the tour.
• Money: If you plan to buy food or admission tickets on your tour, you will need local currency. Options are the currency exchange desk, an automatic teller machine or paying by credit card (bank fees vary).
• Food: Apart from Istanbul, meals are rarely included. If you are a selective eater or your tour doesn’t leave the bus, you might want to buy something at the airport beforehand. On the other hand, if you are adventurous, you may wish to hold out for a local market or food stall.
• Luggage: Not all tours have room or allow you to bring your luggage with you. If they don’t have storage facilities, you can store your carry-on with the airport’s “Left Luggage” service (fee applies).

Linda, I stumbled upon this post accidentally and I’m so glad! I had no idea about these free tours. What a great idea! I always pay more for our tickets because I’m looking for the shortest connections, while with a longer flight I could get a free city tour. I remember that once we had an long layover in Paris (about 8-9 hours) and of course, we took the train right into the city and wandered around. Are these free city tours available for all the big cities in the world?

I have run across quite a few inexpensive “layover tours” that tour companies offer to travelers, and not only do they pick you up at the airport, they promise to get you back in plenty of time for your next flight. Based on what I’ve seen they keep that promise, and we think that’s pretty exciting. Even better in our opinion, IcelandAir has a wonderful option for transatlantic travellers: a stopover in Iceland for up to 7 days for the same ticket price. We fully intend to find an opportunity to explore that way.

I agree whole-heartedly! Take advantage of these layovers to do something you might not otherwise do. We’ve laid over in a few of these spots and my favorite was Doha!

Really, Corinne? What made Doha so interesting? I’m intrigued by that city for some reason.

I’ve tried to do the one in Singapore, but the wait list to get a spot on the bus is always huge, by the time you can get on a tour it is time to fly out. But I love the concept of the layover tours.

I didn’t know that. It’s a shame you can’t make a reservation before you board your flight, isn’t it?

L engthy airport layovers are not only a total brain drain, but a wasted opportunity to explore. If you thought that all airport layovers have to be this way, this article may just change your mind!

Some airports offer tours and other great distractions such as in-airport movie theatres, museums, musical performances, and tropical gardens . The best part? These are available for  FREE , and no visa is required as you're considered an “in transit” passenger. Just be sure to bring all your travel documents with you (see end of article).

Needless to say, layovers can now be turned into thrifty travel experiences. Here's 7 airports with free tours & activities!

1. Singapore (Singapore Changi Airport)

Bustling Chinatown, the famous Gardens by the Bay, of the sparkling Marina Bay waterfront are some of Singapore's highlights. Tours here visit the major city highlights and run a total of six times per day. If you have time, check out some of the world's cheapest Michelin star restaurants (several of which are in downtown Singapore)

• Layover time needed : 5.5-6 hours
• Where to register : in Terminal 2 go to Transit Area between the Skytrain and Transfer Lounge F to Terminal 3, near the escalator to Arrival Immigration on Level 2. For Terminal 3 go to the Transit Area, near Transfer Lounge A and Gate A1-A8 on Level 2. If lost enquire at the nearest Information Counter.
• Tour schedule & info : There are  2 tours to choose from – a City Lights Tour  and  Heritage Tour . The City Sights tour runs twice daily, and the Heritage 4 times a day. Further details can be found on the Changi Airport website .

Other Changi Airport Freebies

• Take a garden walk in any of the airport's 5 gardens , including a butterfly garden.
• Free movies can be watched in any of the airport's three movie theatres 24 hours a day, located in Terminal 2 & 3. For locations and movie times, check here .
• Slip down the world's tallest slide.  With any $10 purchase at the airport, you can get one free ride down the slide.
• Sleep  in Changi's free rest areas  between flights at no charge.
• DIY art in Changi's cultural centre where you can try out woodblock rubbing, a once popular artform in the 50's and 60's.

2. Seoul, Korea (Incheon Intl Airport)

Perfectly poised temples, an electric downtown core, and pristine palaces like Gyeongbokgung Palace are some of the key highlights on a quick trip to Seoul. If you consider staying a little longer, consider visiting the North Korean DMZ border .

• Layover time needed: 1-5+ hours depending on the tour.
• Where to register : reservations can be made  online or at either of the  Transit Tour desks . These are located as follows: on 2F they're in front of gates 25 and 29, on 1F they are desks 41 and 42 ‘Hana Tour’ in front of gate 8.
• Tour schedule & info : There are 8 tours to choose from (viewable here ). There are morning and afternoon departures. Further details can be found on the Incheon airport website .
• Important note(s) : Incheon's tours are almost free – a $10 USD (10,000 KWD) fee is charged.

Other Incheon Airport Freebies

• Gardens: Pine, cacti, and rock gardens are just some of the 7 gardens  to explore, all found on this map . Location : All are located in the Millenium Hall and Welcoming Hall (both 1F, passenger terminal), except for the Four Gracious Plants garden found in the East and West Wing B1 of the passenger terminal.
• Korean Cultural Museum:  with an array of art spanning 5,000 years, this small but impressive collection of ancient relics is a great way to pass the time. Location : Transfer Lounge (Level 4F). Hours : 07:00-22:00.
• Traditional Korean Cultural Experience:  make your own handicrafts such as traditional Korean paper (Hanji) or fans. You can even listen to traditional Korean musical performances and 12-string harp recitals (concert schedule viewable  here ).  Location : Public area 1F Millenium Hall or Level 3F if in the Duty-Free Area near Gate 31. Hours : 07:00-22:00.
• View Korean art in the Traditional Cultural Centre , open 24 hours a day for your viewing pleasure and sometimes offering craft sessions.

 3. Taipei, Taiwan (Taoyuan Intl Airport)

Rated by us as one of the top (and underrated!) budget destinations out there, Taipei is a hidden gem. Its glimmering skyline, delectable eats and streets of old are irresistibly charming and accessible via airport tours.

• Layover time needed:  7 to 24 hours max.
• Where to register : Book upon arrival at the Tourist Service Center in the Arrival Lobby of Terminal 1 and 2. You can also book online using the application form in Step 3 on this page .
• Tour schedule & info : There are two tours to choose from – a morning tour and an afternoon tour. Hours & info can be found on the Taipei Airport website .

4. Tokyo, Japan (Tokyo Narita Airport)

While we'd argue that you should visit Japan for more than a layover, a tour here will provide snippet peaks of ancient temples, a neon city, and intriguing museums. If you decide to stay awhile longer, check our budget tips , rail pass , and foodie advice here.

• Layover time needed : 5 hours minimum (tours are 3 hours long)
• Where to register : in-person at Narita Transit Tourism Counter in Terminal 1 or 2 ( maps here ) or online. Take note the desk is only open from 9:00AM-12:00PM.
• Tour schedule & more info : There are 8 different tours. Highlights include the Narita-san Shinso-Ji temple, Museum of Aeronautical Sciences, nature walks, Shisui shopping outlets. More information can be found here .

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport claims the third spot with a score of 68.8 out of 100. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and John Wayne Airport secured the fourth and fifth spots, respectively, with scores of 67.8 and 66.6 out of 100. MSY also features impressive on-time performance statistics, with 78% of departures and 77% of arrivals adhering to schedule.

William P. Hobby Airport, with its 25 gates, facilitates smooth and swift turnarounds. It boasts an average delay duration of just 51 minutes for departures (ranking fourth lowest in the study) and an average delay duration of 58 minutes for arrivals (placing it in the top 10 lowest in the study) — minimizing disruptions to your travel schedule.

10 Airport Layover Hacks You Need to Know

As much as we all love a direct flight, layovers are sometimes inevitable. In some cases, you might barely have enough time to get out of your seat and make it to the next terminal before takeoff. But if you've got more than a few minutes to spare between your flights, you might find yourself in a traveler's limbo that can make your journey feel even longer. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can make the best of your downtime before you make it to your final destination. Read on for the airport layover hacks you need to know, according to travel experts.

1. Check for WiFi availability ahead of time.

We're attached to our devices, so having some time to kill in an airport makes having a solid internet connection especially important. That's why it's essential to know if you'll be able to connect when you get there.

"Find out in advance if the airport has free WiFi," says Becca Siegel , co-owner of Half Half Travel blog. "While this seems like something obvious, the truth is that some airports in some parts of the world have WiFi that can only be accessed with a national phone number. I've been there, and it's been rough!"

This can be especially problematic if you're traveling abroad and run the risk of using all of your allotted international data before you even arrive at your destination. "If you know that WiFi may be iffy, bring things to pass the time like pre-downloaded movies, audiobooks, playlists, or old-fashioned books and magazines," Siegel suggests.

2. Pamper yourself.

At best, you may expect to be bored during any kind of long airport stint. But with time to kill, it's a perfect excuse to treat yourself to a bit of self care.

"If you have a lengthy layover at a large airport like Atlanta Hartsfield or JFK, make the most of your time!" says Cheryl Nelson , travel preparedness expert and founder/owner of Prepare With Cher . "Desperately need a refresh manicure or pedicure? I recently got a pedicure in JFK Terminal 4 on my way to a warmer climate. I didn't have time to get a pedicure before leaving for my trip, so I was thankful for this opportunity."

3. Locate an outlet right away.

Having your devices at hand becomes even more critical when you're flying. After all, besides being a source of entertainment and information, they're often your boarding pass . If you still have another leg of travel ahead of you, it's crucial you find a place to plug in.

"Whether finishing a report for work or playing games on your phone, you'll want a power outlet or charging station," says Becky Hart , content marketing strategist at Seven Corners Travel Insurance . "They tend to be in short supply at airports, so if you have a long layover, find an outlet and get a full charge sooner rather than later."

4. Try to get into a lounge.

An airport terminal can be a hectic place to spend even a little bit of time. That's why experts say your first move should be to make your way to a lounge.

"They not only provide food but also have a selection of complimentary drinks," says Nelson. "Some lounges even have showers and more comfortable places to rest or take a nap."

And access might not be as limited as you think. "Even if you're not a member of a rewards program or rewards credit card and don't fly first-class, you can still buy a lounge day pass at most airports," says Mercedes Zach , a travel expert with ASAP Tickets . "That way, you get all the amenities that are well worth the average price of $40 to $50."

If you want to plan ahead, you can find which lounges offer day access by checking the airport's website or using an app like LoungeBuddy . Ultimately, it could make your downtime feel a lot more like "me" time.

5. Use other quiet spaces to relax

There are plenty of options for escaping a crowded terminal that don't require any payment to enter or use.

"Even if you don't have lounge access, you can take a calming break from the airport commotion by searching for quiet spaces," Erica Forest , founder and CEO of Trip Scholars , tells Best Life . "Many international airports offer meditation rooms, yoga spaces, sensory rooms, and chapels that are open to both religious and non-religious travelers."

6. Don't stray too far from your gate.

Terminals can fill up with people as boarding times near for multiple gates. Nelson says it can be relaxing to move a little bit further from the action when your area gets too busy—but not too far.

"If you're waiting at your gate and don't want to be in a sea of people, walk to another nearby quieter gate and find a seat there while you wait," she says. "As long as you can still hear announcements from your gate agent, you're good to go."

7. Use it for last-minute trip planning.

No matter how prepared you are, the time leading up to leaving for a trip goes by quickly. That's why Forest says the downtime during your layover can be one of the best ways to learn a little more about your destinations and firm up some more of your itinerary for when you get there.

8. Bring some food, drinks, and basic supplies along.

It's no secret that food and drink cost a lot more in an airport than on the street. That's why having a little something on hand to tide you over is a good idea.

"You can save a lot of money by bringing your own snacks for the journey," Nelson suggests. "Instead of going to the food court for meals, pack your lunch in your backpack and enjoy that while you wait."

And it might not just come down to a matter of choice. Depending on when your next flight is, there may not be easy access to meals or a place to lie down.

"I always travel with my own stash of snacks and deck of cards in case airport lounges or restaurants are closed during my layover—which can happen if you're traveling overnight," Pamela Holt , travel expert and host of Me, Myself, and the World tells Best Life . "In this case, I also recommend packing a layover sleep kit that includes a silk sleep mask, ear plugs, compression socks, a small travel blanket, a toothbrush, and an extra pair of underwear."

9. Get out of the airport for a bit.

Stuck with a  really long layover? Experts say you can use the opportunity to get in a quick bonus visit before your next flight by getting out of the airport for a bit.

"Even if it's not a location that has been on your bucket list, you might be surprised by what it actually offers," says Zach. "You can leave your luggage at the airport or the nearest train station storage facilities and take the quickest public transportation to get to the city."

She adds that some larger airports will sometimes even offer an organized group tour of the city that departs directly from the airport itself.

"Research the options to save you time spent figuring out public transportation systems and directions to major sites," says Zach. "Just be sure to get back to the airport on time for your next flight."

However, it's essential that you've done the research ahead of time when traveling abroad. "If you're planning on leaving the airport grounds during a five- or more-hour layover, make sure to check with that country's visa restrictions and rules," suggests Lauren Gumport , vice president of communications at Faye Travel Insurance . "You can find out this information by talking to a representative from your airline or heading to an information desk at the airport.

10. Look for a cheap hotel.

Most airports have at least a few hotels nearby, which often serve as convenient lodging for business travelers with early flights and for stranded passengers. But they can also be very helpful if you need more relaxation than a lounge can offer.

Our tour guide will meet you at Incheon airport first. After a 1 hour drive, we will arrive in Seoul, a city with modern and traditional culture. We will see the  Royal Guard Changing Ceremony in front of the palace .  During the Joseon Dynasty, the royal guards performed the given task by guarding the Gwanghwamun Gate, the entrance of Gyeongbokgung Palace where the king ruled the country. Since 1469, the ceremony has taken place and its record has been consulted for the present reenactment ceremony.  The reenactment of the original ceremony began in 1996 and it catches the eyes of passersby, especially foreign tourists, when guardsmen perform the changing of guards in traditional costumes at the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace in downtown Seoul, so you can experience this traditional event in Seoul every day except Tuesday. After the 20mins ceremony, we go ahead to see the beautiful palace. Built in  1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace is also commonly referred to as the “Northern Palace” because its location is the furthest north when compared to the neighboring palaces of Changdeokgung (Eastern Palace) and Gyeongheegung (Western Palace). Gyeongbokgung Palace is arguably the most beautiful and remains the largest of all five palaces, with beautiful buildings such as Gyeonghoeru and Hyangwonjeong Pavilions which are both on top of ponds.

*Royal Guard Changing Ceremony & Gyeongbokgung Palace are closed on Tuesday. We will visit Changdeokgung Palace instead.

Walk along the  Bukchon Hanok Village , which   sits between the two palaces of the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeongbokgung, and Changdeokgung, as well as the Jongmyo Shrine. Unlike other Hanok villages, Bukchon was not created for tourists but is actually a living village inhabited by Seoulites. The village is home to hundreds of traditional houses called ‘Hanok’ that date back to the Joseon dynasty. Today, many of these Hanoks operate as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, or tea houses, providing an opportunity to experience, learn and immerse in Korean traditional culture.

You can choose to have lunch in a restaurant or local market after a half-day tour, or just skip the lunch and visit Insa-dong . Insa-dong is located in the heart of the city is an important place where old but precious and traditional goods are on display. There is one main road in Insa-dong with alleys on each side. Within these alleys are galleries, traditional restaurants, traditional tea houses, and cafes.

Have a relaxing and peaceful time at Jogyesa Temple , which is the center of Zen Buddhism in Korea, and is also famous for being located in the city. The first thing you will see at the temple are the trees since these locust trees and Baeksong trees are about 500 years old. It’s stated that the main temple was built in 1938, and it is particularly beautiful with all the different colors painted on it, and inside the building is the statue of Seokgamoni.

This tour was great! My mom and I got in at 5am and when we arrived, I already had a message from our tour guide, Eric, telling us he was here and was waiting whenever we were ready. After a quick change of clothes, we met Eric. Since the currency exchange wasn’t open until 6:30am, Eric waited until we were set and then took off for Seoul. On the way, Eric was amazing telling us all about the history and cultural aspects of Korea. We arrived at the palace and Eric took care of everything, walking us through the palace and giving us our own personal tour. After the palace, we went exploring. I love how I was able to tailor the tour to what we wanted to do. Eric was also available to translate for us at the market, but also asked if we wanted to explore on our own and we met at a certain time. We were able to do everything we wanted in an eight hour tour. I highly recommend this tour!

This was a great tour to get to know the best of Seoul in one day. We had 12 hours layover and we chose to take this tour given the flexibility with the time and the fact they can customize the tour to your interests. We ended up taking the 6 hour tour to account for transportation from the aiport and back. Our tour guide was Jay, very knowledgeable and very nice all around person. He was very flexible with the schedule; and was very realistic with what we could accomplish during the tour. We ended up very happy with what we did and were able to have a taste of Korean culture for a day. The choice for restaurant was spot on, with great food, fast service and traditional, very tasty Korean food.

Our guide, Bryan, who spoke very good English, worked very hard to meet our needs and requests. Our driving was filled with cultural exchange conversation . . . nice! He got us to and from the Incheon cruise port on time into Seoul which is critical to cruise touring . . . can’t miss that ship. He also accommodated our request to recommend a very good local food for lunch which was excellent. We sadly got rained out for the Palace and Changing of the Guard (obviously not his fault), but we visited National Museum as backup which was a stellar facility. I do not want to leave out the office folks (Yan) who worked out the advance touring details with great experience and expertise well before our actual visit. Yan made this easy for us too! I do not say this often, but would give this company a 6 over a 5 if that was an option.

Taipei Layover Tour – How to Spend an 8+ Hour Layover

Sometimes your travel schedule works like a well-oiled machine. Connecting flights line up with Swiss precision and you move effortlessly from one flight to another without delays… sometimes. But on other trips you get more of a sense that “you can’t get there from here” and you are left waiting for 8 hours between flights.

Such was my travel schedule which left me with a scheduled 7 hour 55-minute layover in Taiwan. I had never been to Taiwan. Rather than sit in artificial lighting, eating at the food court and hanging out on airport wi-fi, I arranged a layover tour of Taipei sponsored by Viator  (see other private tours in Taipei ).

Layover  Tour in Taipei

I had never done an organized layover tour before, but the idea seemed simply brilliant. If you have an 8-hour layover or greater this tour plans an itinerary that gets you 45 minutes from the airport, explores some of the major city sites and whisks you back to the airport in time to catch your next flight. The only catch is that you have to be functional after your first flight, in my case a flight scheduled to last 13 hours from San Francisco. I can sleep on planes so I was in great shape (check out my 10 Tips to Combat Jet Lag ).

My flight arrived earlier than our 6 am estimated arrival time. I cleared customs which I would not have had to do if I had just stayed in the airport, but then again I would not have gotten another stamp in my passport nor would I have counted being in Taiwan. I met my guide Mark Lu and my driver in the arrival area by 6 am.

Advantages of a Private Tour

The first difference between trying to get into the city on my own and a private tour was obvious from the moment I saw someone holding up a sign with my name on it. I didn’t have to find the city bus or wonder where to go and I started learning about Taiwan on the way into the city. Mark’s command of English was great. He talked about the history of the island as it was colonized in turned by the Spanish, the Dutch, the Chinese, the Japanese, and the Nationalist Chinese. Mark has only been a tour guide for a few years. Previous to that he was an officer in the Taiwanese Navy.

Bao’an Temple

One problem with starting a city tour at 6 o’clock in the morning is that many things are run by the government and don’t open up until 9 AM. Fortunately, the Bao’an Temple, which is a UNESCO world heritage site, is privately run and opened at 6 AM. We toured the temple complex as Mark explained to me some of the details of the Taoism religion. The tour normally also includes a stop at the nearby Confucius Temple which opens at 9 am but which was unfortunately closed the day of my visit.

Street Market

Our next scheduled stop was the changing of the guard at the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall which happens on the hour starting at 9 am, but we had to kill some time before that. While we waited we toured a local market. I love local markets and particularly local markets in Asia. I don’t always know exactly what people are eating but I love the scene. Motorcycles and pedestrians thread their way down the street which has not yet filled up in this early morning hour.

The Grand Hotel

We also visited the Grand Hotel , the first international hotel in Taipei. The Grand Hotel was built by Chiang Kai Shek’s 4 th wife. It was the tallest building in Taiwan for most of a decade after it was completed in 1973. It is built in the style of a giant pagoda and is imposing. It has 490 rooms, 12 floors, and 3 restaurants. It has been where many foreign dignitaries have been housed over the years. It is built on Yuanshan Mountain on the site where the occupying Japanese had a Shinto shrine in WWII. The front gate is a great photo spot and the top photo on this article was taken there.

National Palace Museum

We saw the outside of the National Palace Museum which holds 696,000 pieces of ancient Chinese imperial art and artifacts collected by the emperors of China over centuries. The museum was originally housed in the Forbidden City in Beijing. The museum collection was moved several times during WWII to keep it out of Japanese hands and then later evacuated to Taiwan with the nationalist Chinese forces after they were defeated by the communists in the Chinese Civil War. The PRC considers that the collection was “stolen” and wants it back.

Unfortunately, the museum also does not open until 9 am.

Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall – Liberty Square

The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall sits in Liberty Square. The ground level houses a library and museum The Memorial Hall also houses a museum that interprets the history of China and of Taiwan during the time of Chiang Kai Shek. You can see artifacts like the presidential limousine .

To get to the memorial hall you climb 89 steps, one for each year in the life of Chiang Kai Shek. The massive doors of the hall opened at 9 am, ushering in crowds of tourists in time for the ceremonial changing of the guard. The figure of Chiang Kai Shek sits in a large marble chair reminiscent of the Lincoln Memorial. Chiang Kai Shek looked on the guards displayed their proficiency with rifle choreography.

The Memorial Hall sits in a large park-like area which also houses the National Theater and National Concert Hall. A children’s choir was singing on the steps of the National Concert Hall during our visit.

Presidential Office Building

We stopped for a photo at the Presidential Office Building, the Taiwan version of the White House. This Baroque-style building was built during the time of the Japanese occupation for the governor of the island. It became the office of the president when the nationalists fled to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War.

We proceeded to Taipei 101, which was the tallest building in the world from 2004-2010 and is still the 9 th tallest building. It is still the home of the world’s fastest elevator, which climbs to the observation floor in 25 ear-popping seconds.

The view from Taipei 101 was intermittent because of heavy clouds on the day of my visit.

Taiwan is a geologically active area so Taipei 101 was built to survive earthquakes as well as the occasional Tsunami. One of the interesting features of the building is hidden inside near the top. It is a large heavy counterweight which is suspended in the inside of the building. This weight helps dampen the movement of the building.

Din Tai Fung dumpling restaurant

The final stop of the tour was the famous Din Tai Fung dumpling restaurant in the same complex as Taipei 101. If there had been no view at all from Taipei 101, if there had been no temples open and we had missed the changing of the guard, the entire tour would have been worth it just for the pork soup dumplings alone.

Return to the Airport

The return trip to the airport was slowed by an accident on the highway. It made my guide and driver nervous but I let them do the worrying for me. They are, after all, the professionals. And that was really the theme of the tour for me. Not everything went smoothly. Not everything was open the day I was there or at the time I was there. But the entire time I was comparing my experience to what it would have been like if I stayed in the airport.

I recognized my seatmate on my flight out of Taiwan as someone who had flown in on the same flight as me from San Francisco. It was her first international trip and she had been afraid to leave the airport. While I was on a tour seeing world-class sites , she was trying to sleep on the airport floor. Mine was the better option.

Things to Do On a Layover at Incheon Airport (2024)

As a traveler, one of the most common dilemmas is an unplanned extended layover. It’s happened to me more than once, and what was supposed to be just a quick, hour-long stay turned into a 7-hour distressful wait. This is not what I want for you on your Seoul layover.

If you find yourself experiencing a layover at Incheon Airport, fret not, but be aware that you will need to fill out a K-ETA and Q-Code before arriving at Incheon Airport. You're still going to have a great time because there are tons of things to do in Incheon Airport to have fun while awaiting a flight.

Read on to learn how to make your layover in Incheon Airport a worthwhile experience!

Basics of Travel in South Korea

Before a layover in incheon airport (tips), what to do inside incheon airport, how to sleep at incheon airport on a layover, what to do on a layover in seoul.

Visa: Most travelers will need a K-ETA ( Korean Electronic Travel Authorization ), applied for at least 72 hours before departure. If you needed a visa before, you'll need a K-ETA now. Note that from April 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, passport holders from 22 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and several EU nations, can visit visa-free – no K-ETA required!

Currency: South Korean won ( KRW or ₩ )

Arrival in Korea: all international flights arrive at Incheon Airport (ICN), one of the best-rated airports in the world. It usually takes about 1 hour to get through security & pick up checked bags.

Getting Around: Korea has an extensive & reliable public transport system. A refillable T-Money card is your ticket to buses and trains across the country; you can buy and refill yout TMoney card at any subways station or convenience store in Korea.

Internet & SIM Cards: Rent a Wi-Fi egg or purchase a prepaid Korean SIM card at the airport, available for up to one month of connection.

Travel Insurance: always recommended, though some credit card companies offers limited coverage when booking.

If only visiting Korea on a layover, you only need the following two documents, in addition to your passport and boarding pass.

Visa or K-ETA : This is the document required by Korea for you to go through customs and/or leave the airport. If you visited Korea before September 2021, even if you didn't need a visa back then, you will need a K-ETA now.

Check the official site to sort out whether you need a Korean visa or K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization). These are good for 2 years, and you must apply at least 72 hours before your departure.

Note that from April 2023 to December 2024, citizens of 22 countries will temporarily NOT need a K-ETA or visa to visit the Republic of Korea: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, the UK, and the US (including Guam).

Q-Code : This is part of the covid tracking system Korea has implemented since the end of 2019. Even though they no longer require you to be vaccinated or take a covid test, they still want to be able track you down if you at some point do test positive for covid. You can fill this out when you arrive.

If you don't want to leave the airport on your layover, for example if your bags are checked on, you don't need either of these documents, though I'd recommend a K-ETA, regardless.

I'm sure that if you find yourself stuck in an airport after a long flight, the first thing that comes to mind is food. It's good then that Incheon Airport boasts a range of restaurants with affordable food you can try.

From fast food to local and traditional delights, you can find these stalls throughout the airport, and most of them are open 24 hours. Lounges also frequently offer one-day access to their buffet tables. 

If you're craving something a bit fancy, there are also a few restaurants which serve gourmet cuisine. For those in the mood for relaxation, passengers can visit any of the airport’s facilities without issue– and you'll be happily surprised to learn that this airport has features not seen in an ordinary airline terminal. 

Exciting activities to do in Incheon Airport include watching a movie in their CGV theater, touring the golf course, or gliding in their massive ice skating rink.

A layover at Incheon Airport may mean that you arrive in Incheon during the wee hours of the morning. Since the airport accommodates flights 24/7, it's pretty natural to expect that there are sleeping zones for weary travelers from around the world.

Within the terminals you can keep your eyes peeled for the designated Nap or Relax Zones to sit in their comfortable reclining chairs, padded benches, and even beds. 

All of this is free for transit passengers who aren’t rechecking bags in Seoul, a fact which often surprises visitors. Because this is Korea , generally these are quiet spaces which encapsulate you from the world. There’s plenty of space where you can park your things, especially on a weekday or during the day.

You needn’t worry about thieves, either, because Incheon Airport has a state-of-the-art security system. You can even safely take a shower after getting your much-needed sleep, though there is a time limit for shower use.

While the standard airport seats are quite comfortable for a short rest, some of you may need more privacy to rest optimally. Incheon Airport Transit Hotel is a good choice that provides a pleasant place you can use all to yourself. 

What they offer is a relatively spacious room with a comfortable bed and full amenities, right in the airport. If you feel like taking a long, heated bath to relax your muscles before slipping into bed, all of their rooms have a shower area which provides this comfort.

You can choose from a range of Korean, Western, and Chinese cuisine to be brought to your room whenever you get hungry, provided by their 24-hour service.

But if you’re on a tight budget or happen to just be getting off the airport metro station at either Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, Darakhyu Capsule Hotel provides a reasonable space you can sleep in, rented by the hour.

Each capsule is padded with a luxury mattress, and you can adjust the temperature according to your liking. Moreover, a hub next to the bed lets you conveniently charge all your gadgets while connecting your music to the capsule's surround-sound Bluetooth speaker.

Did you know that you can leave the terminal for awhile during a layover in Seoul? Incheon Airport offers this exciting deal for visitors where you can tour for up to 5 hours and witness some of Seoul’s most famous sights.

Just visit their website and choose what you wish to do before leaving on your trip. Recent tour options include stopping by the Songdo Hanok Village and the Triple Shopping Streets for some retail therapy. Please note that all tours are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 (except tours inside the airport).

Joining these tours also allows you to preview what it’s like to visit Seoul’s markets, with the goal of enticing you back for a longer trip to Korea. Here you can have the chance to interact with locals and get to know their way of life.

You can even purchase fascinating items like Hanji, a type of Korean traditional paper, or Dojang , a type of Korean traditional stamp, for any friends back home who might want a piece of Korean culture. 

If historical sights are more of your thing, you can visit two of Korea’s famous traditional palaces right in Insadong. What’s convenient about this particular perk to a Seoul Layover is that the tour shuttles leave and drop off at terminal registration desks, which saves you time in getting back to catch your connecting flight.

If you want to do things on your own, you might want to try a real Jimjilbang (Korean spa) experience relatively near Incheon Airport. Siloam Spa is located near the Seoul station and offers relaxing massage that instantly relieves you from fatigue.

Then you can ride the subway directly to Dongdaemun Design Plaza , a breathtaking architectural marvel designed by radical deconstructivist designer Zaha Hadid.

You should now have a good idea of what to do in and outside Incheon Airport if you're in Incheon Airport on a layover right now. I hope you will be able to try a few of these suggestions before you depart for your next destination.

Nevertheless, all of these are just a small portion of the experiences you could have on a Seoul layover— there are countless other places inside and outside of Seoul that provide even more rewarding experiences.

Hi, Gie! Unfortunately you will need a K-ETA or transit visa ONLY IF yo have bags that need to be re-checked, since you'll be flying on different airlines. If you only have carry-ons, you're fine since you won't be exiting the terminal.

@Max, thanks a lot for the confirmation. So you mean even if I have different airlines for the connecting flights, I can still check in my next flight without visa as long as I don't have bags to check in which would require me to pass through immigration. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct. You'll just show them your boarding pass to get on to your next flight and they'll wave you through the Q-Code line, which is before immigration. Just be sure to check in for your next flight before you leave, or do it as soon as you land and get on airport wifi, if need be.

That's correct. As long as your bags are checked along to your final destination (you'll have to double-check with the airline), then you won't need to apply for a K-ETA or Q-Code.

I'd say you could spend 4 or so hours in the city and still get back on time for your flight; all you need to do is each apply for a K-ETA, which you can do now, and apply for a Q-Code within 72 hours of your flight to Korea. There are also some government-run tours available now, as of January!

I'm travelling from phil by jin air and hve a 4 hrs layover in korea going to US. From incheon airport terminal 1 need to transit to terminal to for change plane, which is delta airlines. I have bags to recheck but not planning to outside the airport. Do i still nees K-eTa?

Yes, unfortunately you'll need either a K-ETA or a transit visa, since you'll need to go through customs to recheck your bags & change terminals.

We are Canadians transferring at Incheon airport. During the 15 hours layover, can we pass the customs/immigration and stay in a hotel nearby the airport without bringing our checked-in luggage with us because the luggage will be directly transferred or checked in to the flight to our destination? Yes, you can leave through customs with a K-ETA applied for in advance, but unfortunately you'll have to double-check with the airline whether or not they'll check forward a bag for a layover of such a duration.

Yes, you can join a tour, and just need to sign up ahead of time, but you will also need a transit visa.

Please elaborate when you stated that "All of this is free for transit passengers who aren’t rechecking bags in Seoul". We are traveling from the US to the Philipines soon. We fly with one airlines, have an overnight layover in Incheon, then fly out with another airlines. Does that mean we have to recheck our bags, and if we do then does mean the airport amenities are not free? Thank in advance for your response.

Yes, you do have to re-check your bags if flying with two different airlines (assuming you have checked bags rather than only carry-ons). All of those amenities are still free for such passengers, but you won't likely get much use out of them, because if you need to re-check your bags then you won't be able to re-enter the airport terminals until at most 3 hours before your flight (when most desks will open for bag check). If you flew on two different airlines but DIDN'T have any bags to reclaim and re-check, then you could avail of the free nap zones regardless because you wouldn't need to go through customs to reclaim your bags.

Yes, you will need one of those two-- you can visit the K-ETA site to see, but it looks like you will need a visa in order to leave the airport for a transit tour.

I have a long layover in ICN (22 hours) and would love to leave the airport to do some sightseeing and shopping for make up and cosmetics. If I have one bag already checked to my final destination, can I check a new baggage when I come back from my shopping haul during my layover?

That's more a question for your airline (even as to whether you can check a bag for such a long layover), but I suspect that if you have the ability to check two bgs, you can check a second one later on, before going through security.

Only if you're from one of several countries for which they've temporarily suspended the need for K-ETAs: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK, US (including Guam).

Hi, Jona! You can go on a city tour, but unfortunately, you do also need to go to your nearest Korean consulate in the US to apply for a visa beforehand (as opposed to needing to go to the Philippines to apply).

Correct, if your bags are checked-through then you don't need a visa, as you'll stay in the terminals the whole time.

Correct! Yeah, you no longer need a visa or K-ETA with an American passport, at least until the end of 2024.

What if I am holding Philippine passport and a US B1/B2 visa? Do we still need a visa? In 2018, I was grateful to be given a chance to visit Korea due to my long layover without a Korean visa but just by presenting my Filipino passport and a US B1/B2 visa.

Yes, unforunately since covid they've changed their policy, including suspending the temporary visas for transit passengers to/from the US. If you're in the US, though, you can apply for a transit visa form th e US (wherever the nearest consulate is).

Ive heard the terminal 1 Transit hotel is closed. Is it possible to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 for the transit Hotel there. My wife would need a Visa to enter Korea but we only have a 20 hr layover and no Visa for her.

Yeah, it is temporarily closed, possibly until as late as August, but you may still be able to rent a room at the airport hotel. Unfortunately there's no way to go between the terminals unless you have a K-ETA or K-ETA Exemption/visa.

Hi there! i'm traveling from Vietnam to the US and have a 8 hour layover in Incheon. I'd like to leave the airport and tour the city during my layover. It looks like I don't need a K-ETA visa, but it's recommended. So do i need a KETA or no? Also, any suggestions on what a family of four with two small children could do during the 8 hour layover?

Hi, Kate! If you have US passposrts, nobody in your family needs a K-ETA or visa until 2025. I'd recommend joining one of the free city tours if you have little kids (organized transport & activities).

Me and my husband plus our 2 kids(9&4) will have an 11 hrs 40 mins layover this coming July at Incheon. Our plane will land at 5am. From what I see, the tour time we want to join in runs from 8am-1300. Our flight to USA is at 4:40pm. So we have like 3hrs 40mins remaining before the flight, will this be enough time to re-enter the airport etc. so we dont miss our flight? We will be on Korean Airlines Manila to Incheon to USA so I assume we do not need to recheck our bags (but I’m not 100% sure).

Another question. If we are going to do the transit tour, is there a place at the airport that we can leave our hand carry luggages? Where there be a fee? Thank you in advance! Appreciate it!

You're very welcome! Yes, that should be plenty of time to get back to the airport and to the terminal, especially if you have your bags checked through. And yes, you can put your hand-carry in the luggage storage, but there is a fee depending on the volume and length of storage; there are a couple of options in the Incheon arrival terminal.

Hello, I've been searching hours through countless websites, I hope you can help me. I am a Philippine passport holder flying to Canada with student visa permit and I will have a long lay-over in Seoul ICN. (Less than 24 hours) I booked two separate flights that means I need to claim my baggage. Do I need a visa just to claim my baggage even If I do not have plans to go out if the airport.

Unfortunately, from everything that people have told me from their experiences, that does mean that you'll need to apply for a transit visa from your local Korean consulate. You can look into the K-ETA and see if there's a visa/green card section, but everyone who's commented back said that they were unable to just get into the country with only a visa or green card from a K-ETA-exempt country like Canada.

No, unfortunately Philippines passport holders cannot apply for a K-ETA and still need to acquire a transit visa for Korea, even if it's for a short layover.

Whenever I have a layover in Seoul, I find a reputable hotel and use their address and phone number. If you have a super long layover and they ask why you ‘booked a hotel,’ just tell them you wanted somewhere to rest. They really won’t question you further, and in over half a dozen layovers at INC, I've never had them ask to see my booking.

And it's generally quite easy going back into the terminal after exploring on a long layover in Incheon, but keep in mind that you'll need at least 2 hours and for some places 3 hours for the roundtrip from Incheon Airport to Seoul proper, plus arriving back at the airport another hour or two before your flight (whether re-checking a bag or not). So I'd recommend having at least a 6-hour layover if you're going to leave the airport, or if the timing lines up, joining a government-run tour for a 4-5 hour layover (since they provide the transport).

I have a 14-hour layover and want to visit the Skygarden and Cheonggyecheon Stream in Seoul. One question I haven't seen asked is what to do with luggage. Delta will not hold by bags for that long. Are there lockers for rent at the airport? What options do I have? Thank you.

Yes, there's a luggage holding/storage company in the arrivals section of both terminals; they charge by the hour, so you can keep your stuff there as long as you need. I'll add that info to the post, thank you.

Hello, I am a Philippine passport holder but a Permanent resident of Canada. I have two connecting flights. From Calgary to Vancouver, Vancouver to Incheon, then Incheon to Manila. There is a 14-hour layover in Incheon and I am planning to explore Seoul during the layover. Hi, Tyn. So from my research, you kind of fall under both-- you'd be eligible for a B2 visa as a permanent resident of Canada, but I'm not exactly sure how you can apply for the visa or if it's automatic upon arrival. Check out this official page for more info.

I would leave AT LEAST an hour each way to get to/from Seoul, and a safe buffer is 3 hours early to your flight (in case the return tot he airport hits any snags), so since your layover is during the daytime, you should have 9 or 10 hours to enjoy the city. It's pretty straightforward to check back in at Incheon, but lines can be quite long on weekend evenings, so I may even leave a 3.5 hours buffer for arriving back to the airport before your flight, as traveling around Seoul at rush hour (4pm-6pm) will be its own kind of busy. Definitely leave your bags at the airport lockers (paid), if you have big bags!

Though they've left their royal duties behind, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made an official visit to Nigeria on Friday, reminiscent of their former royal tours. 

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were all smiles as they visited the Lightway Academy in Abuja while on a visit to Nigeria. Not only is it their first time in the country, but the trip also marks the couple's first official international tour since they stepped down from their roles as senior royals in early 2020. 

On Friday, Harry was seen wearing an off-white linen button-down shirt and pants while Meghan donned a peach-colored Heidi Merrick maxi dress with her hair down in a loose ponytail. 

The couple were gifted large brown wooden beaded necklaces, which they wore throughout the visit. They snapped selfies with school children, watched local performers and were greeted with a flower-covered banner that read, "We Are Honored to Have You!" 

Harry and Meghan's Archewell Foundation previously donated school supplies and menstrual products to the women of Nigeria through a partnership with the GEANCO Foundation. 

In addition to meeting with the school's staff and students, Harry and Meghan also delivered their own speeches about mental health. 

"We are honored to have our first visit to Nigeria be here with all of you. We believe in you, we believe in your teachers and we believe in your ability to continue to tell your stories and to just be honest with each other," Meghan told the crowd (per People ). "There is no need to suffer in silence."

After Harry's speech, Meghan couldn't help but gush over her husband, saying, "You see why I'm married to him? It's so inspiring because he speaks the truth." 

The trip comes after Harry visited the United Kingdom to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. Meghan did not join her husband for that part of the trip, though she did briefly touch down in the country as a part of her layover to Nigeria, meeting Prince Harry in the airport's Windsor Suite, per royal reporters . 

The pair have a weekend of official events scheduled for their trip abroad. Notably, the couple's last official overseas trip was in 2019 to South Africa, where they spoke publicly for the first time about their struggles within the royal family and as first-time parents. 

They have since become estranged from many members of the royal family, including Harry's father,  King Charles III,  and his brother, Prince William , neither of whom Harry saw during his most recent visit to the U.K. 

"He hasn't got many other plans," royal expert Katie Nicholl told ET of  the Duke of Sussex. "He was, of course, hoping to see his family. Possibly that's why the trip was three days. But as we now know, there will be no family meetings."

Since exiting their roles as senior royals in early 2020, Harry and Meghan have spoken out on several occasions about what caused them to step down. They gave a headline-making Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021, starred in a Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan , in late 2022, and Harry released a tell-all memoir, Spare , in early 2023.
